The NFL is constantly evolving but one thing that will never go out of style is veteran leadership. Do you think this Super Bowl winning coach has lost his fastball?

00:00Speaking of the NFC East, we wanted to play audio that went pretty viral yesterday of John Harbaugh
00:07when he was speaking to the New York Giants.
00:10He has them assembled prior to training camp.
00:13This is John Harbaugh, the new Giants head coach, trying to rally his troops and inspire them.
00:18Is this the whole team or just the rookies?
00:20This is the whole team, coach, is like in a big conference room.
00:24You can tell me what you think of his speech right here.
00:27Welcome, man. Good to see everybody here.
00:28You excited?
00:29Yes, sir.
00:30A little nervous?
00:31No.
00:32A little nervous?
00:33A little nervous, man.
00:35A little nervous?
00:36Sighted nervous, you know?
00:37Nervous like a full game almost, Mason.
00:40Give us a kick off.
00:42Standing up here in front of the New York Giants.
00:45The New York Giants.
00:48It's the New York Giants sitting in this room.
00:51The New York Giants.
00:54Wow.
00:55It's an honor.
00:56It's an honor to stand in front of this room right now.
01:00I know this coach is back here feeling the same way.
01:02Right, coaches?
01:04It's an honor, man.
01:06We were working, hadn't we?
01:08We were working early, we were late getting ready for today.
01:12Today.
01:14Sitting in this chair, this seat.
01:16Getting to work.
01:18Getting started.
01:19Our beginning.
01:21Because this is where it all begins.
01:23To get it.
01:26Now, it's where it started.
01:27It's where it's at the beginning.
01:29Perfect.
01:29We're about to start.
01:30Perfect stinger to play there, Valdez.
01:32And Drab brought this up during the break.
01:34And it does make more sense if you watch the video that accompanies this.
01:40I was going to say, it sounds awkward.
01:41Just listen to the audio.
01:42It was pretty cringeworthy because he gets a little bit of response from the players at the very beginning.
01:47Right.
01:47But then when they're showing him repeating, New York Giants, the room has all the air sucked out of it.
01:57Those guys are just looking at him like...
01:59It's probably awkward for them.
02:00It probably is awkward.
02:01He's been doing it so long.
02:02Yeah.
02:03Now, it's got to be tough to come up with new speeches to inspire as you're about to start training
02:09camp.
02:10And to that point, there was a story this week about Nick Sirianni.
02:15And Nick Sirianni's heading into his sixth season coaching the Eagles.
02:20And so to try and connect with his team, he flat out has told people he's using chat GPT to
02:26spice it up because he needs to change the messaging some.
02:30I mean, I think that's a horrible idea to admit it.
02:33I mean, I feel like you can do it and just maybe not take it word for word.
02:38Maybe take some guidance from it.
02:39Put your own spin on it.
02:41Well, he's also searching for stories.
02:42So Sirianni said he asked chat GPT to give him a great relentless effort, true sports story.
02:50And then he found one, which was a story about Anthony Robles, a wrestler who was born with one leg
02:56and won a national championship.
02:57But he's leaning on chat GPT to help him with his speeches.
03:01Now, I'm not going to take too much away from John Harbaugh's terrible speech there.
03:07It doesn't mean they're going to have an awful year.
03:10But I don't know.
03:11It didn't look like there was – maybe there's buy-in from the players.
03:14They're just not showing it.
03:15Maybe it was early in the morning and they're just –
03:17Yeah, they're still tired.
03:18Yeah, they're just waking up.
03:19But it doesn't matter, though.
03:21Nope.
03:21But it doesn't matter because – think about it.
03:26They're going to go through an entire training camp.
03:28Do you think that that speech really matters?
03:32No, it doesn't matter.
03:33That's what takes his point.
03:34But it's just interesting that the charisma is not there.
03:38Hey, maybe the players, they've heard the reports that Harbaugh runs really hard training camps and hard practices.
03:44That was part of the critique of him toward the end in Baltimore.
03:47Maybe they're like, this guy's going to put us through the ringer.
03:51We're going to get injured before the season starts.
03:53Or we're going to get beat up just from practicing super hard like this guy's used to doing.
03:57I think they're just pros and they're just a little bored and it's day one.
04:01And they've heard speeches like that from every coach they've ever had.
04:04It's like us going to a meeting downstairs sometimes.
04:09That's exactly what it is.
04:10Sometimes.
04:11How about every single meeting?
04:13But not the first time.
04:15This is the first time he's probably talked to a lot of them.
04:17Yeah, but it could be a new CEO.
04:19He's still going to be like...
04:22Yeah, right.
04:24He's not going to get fired up.
04:25He should re-watch that video and get rid of anybody that's not buying in.
04:28This is his first year there.
04:30He's got guys that aren't...
04:31I don't know if that means they're not buying in.
04:33I just think they're just vets.
04:37I don't know.
04:38Losers.
04:38They're loser vets.
04:39Yeah.
04:40I mean...
04:41I guess he didn't deserve much more.
04:45He's got no riz.
04:46What do you want him to do?
04:46Do you want him to do the whole, who's got it better than us?
04:49I don't know.
04:49The Harbaugh staple.
04:51I don't know.
04:51He does that after games sometimes.
04:53But his brother got the riz.
04:55His brother's weird.
04:56Hold on.
04:57Didn't he say they're both weird?
04:57But his brother has more charisma.
04:59I think they're both weird.
05:00Well, he stole...
05:00Didn't he steal that from...
05:01Wasn't that Marv Levy's line?
05:02Well, it was his dad's deal.
05:04Oh, that was his dad's...
05:05I mean, maybe...
05:06I'm not saying his dad originated it, but in the Harbaugh family, they grew up with their
05:10dad saying, who's got it better than us?
05:12It's a good line.
05:13And then Jim is the one who's more popularized it, but I've seen John do it in the locker
05:19room, too.
05:20Right.
05:20My perception...
05:21That he uses for post-game wins.
05:24He's not going to whip that out.
05:25I don't know, Valdez.
05:26You're a Ravens fan, so you pay keen attention to it.
05:29But when Harbaugh was with the Ravens from afar, and I did not pay much attention.
05:34But from afar, I always felt like Harbaugh was kind of an ogre.
05:37I never saw him as some...
05:39In what way?
05:40I don't know.
05:42I never saw him as some super happy-go-lucky, fun person.
05:46I just...
05:46I don't know.
05:47He was kind of soft-spoken towards the end.
05:49Maybe it was more towards the end.
05:51Maybe because as he felt the pressure.
05:53Well, remember, Harbaugh was going to be fired in 2008 until Lamar saved his job.
05:58Mm-hmm.
05:59So...
05:59Right.
06:00I mean, he's not...
06:03The perception of Harbaugh is different from people...
06:06In what year?
06:06You said 2008.
06:08Oh, sorry.
06:092018.
06:10Sorry.
06:11Mm-hmm.
06:12The perception of Harbaugh is different from people on the outside than people who have
06:17seen...
06:18Who've watched all of the Ravens games.
06:20What's your perception of him?
06:22He lost his fastball.
06:25He was stubborn.
06:27He refused to make changes when Zach Orr was a problem on defense.
06:32They lost 13 games in the fourth quarter by 14 points or more the last four years of Harbaugh's
06:38tenure.
06:39Like, he refused to change.
06:42Stubborn.
06:43And it cost him.
06:46Cost him his job.
06:47Cost the Ravens games in the season and in the playoffs.
06:51Mm-hmm.
06:52Is Valdez willing to put his money where his mouth is?
06:55And that Harbaugh's lost his fastball?
06:57What?
06:57That the Giants...
06:58I don't know.
06:59He's not going to turn Giants around?
07:00I listen to him clown on Harbaugh all the time ever since he got fired.
07:04I still think Harbaugh's a great coach.
07:0662% winning percentage over his career.
07:08I think most teams would kill to have Harbaugh.
07:10There was a reason why he was the number one wanted coach.
07:13Absolutely.
07:14This offseason.
07:14Sometimes it's just you've been in a job long enough and it's time for a change.
07:19Valdez fire you out by a big, giant, horrible voodoo doll.
07:22Valdez is ungrateful.
07:23He brought him a Super Bowl ring and he treats him like trash.
07:26I mean, it's the dustiest ring in the world.
07:29But along the way, you know, I mean, I get it.
07:32You got a shiny new ring grab and everything.
07:35But along the way, he would lament that it wasn't Lamar's fault, for example, which
07:39would also mean maybe it wasn't Harbaugh's fault when there's a drop at the end of
07:43the game to advance in the playoffs and those sort of breaks.
07:46Look, it's the messaging and everything got stale.
07:49Sometimes it's best for both parties to move on.
07:52Harbaugh probably needs a new change of scenery.
07:54He probably wanted it, too.
07:56It's definitely true.
07:58I don't think John, I don't know if John wanted it, but he probably didn't want to
08:03get fired.
08:04He was probably ready for it, though.
08:05But he kind of knew the writing was on the wall.
08:08Yeah.
08:09A fresh start sometimes.
08:10But when you watch the video, it's not as awkward when you watch it.
08:13Oh, I think it's more awkward when you watch it.
08:16I mean, the players, every team is going to react like that.
08:18Yeah.
08:19It's just not going to be a reaction.
08:20He could have the fire.
08:22What are they supposed to jump up?
08:22He could have some super fiery speech and be the same reaction.
08:26Yeah, but if you...
08:26And high-five each other because Harbaugh's giving a speech.
08:28It depends on the guy, like John Gruden, you're not going to be dead when he's...
08:32There's certain guys command more.
08:34I almost feel bad for him because now everything is video, right?
08:37So this is part of a Giants reality show.
08:40So maybe it's not Hard Knocks.
08:42I can't remember what the label is, but it's clearly a series.
08:45And I know the commanders did that.
08:47When I wrote my book, I leaned heavily on...
08:51I didn't have to be inside the locker room because they showed you what was happening
08:54inside the locker room.
08:55They showed you, and you could get quotes and everything.
08:59And all the teams do that.
09:01So he's got to crank out how many of these speeches just in the preseason before the games?
09:07You know, your father was a pastor.
09:11I mean, 30 years into the sermon for Palm Sunday, it's hard to come up with something
09:18new all the time and be fresh.
09:21He didn't have so much chat GPT back in the day.
09:22You know what I mean?
09:23Yeah, I mean, I guess.
09:27I don't know.
09:27I don't know what these opening moments are across the league.
09:33I don't know what the expectation is.
09:34And this is like syllabus day for a class, too.
09:38Yeah.
09:38It's like, hey guys, we're back.
09:41Maybe he tried to get more out of it than he should have.
09:43Was this right before minicamp?
09:45I don't know the exact setting.
09:47Maybe it's like pre-training camp about to kick off.
09:50I'm not sure why they were all assembled in the room.
09:52I mean, is it just from like a couple days ago?
09:54Well, has anybody started training camp yet?
09:56I don't think so.
09:58I mean, maybe they've reported.
10:00I don't know if they've reported already.
10:02Yeah, I would guess it was one of those.
10:04But I don't know when this happened.
10:05Yeah.
10:06By the way, the show is Giants Life is the name of it.
10:09It premieres on, it premiered yesterday, July 22nd.
10:13Okay.
10:14Like on YouTube or wherever you get your dumb Giants content.
10:17Right.
10:18So it was probably their last minicamp.
10:20Mm-hmm.
10:23Well, the rookies report here to Ashburn tomorrow.
10:28Yes.
10:28They're already back.
10:29I mean, those rookies are here.
10:31And then the vets come in, I think, on Monday.
10:34It's Monday or Tuesday.
10:35You won't show up and throw flowers at Antonio Williams because he gets so sized.
10:39I like Antonio Williams.
10:40I do like him.
10:41I don't know if I'll go throw carnations at him, but I kind of like what his potential
10:45is in his offense.
10:46All right, real quick.
10:47Sonny Stiles is going to walk in.
10:49Oh, I'm a big Sonny Stiles guy.
10:52Big Sonny Stiles mark.
10:53You won't fist bump him.
10:54Show up in Ashburn.
10:55I mean, he might fist bump.
10:56He might knock me over.
10:57He's so big and muscular and strong.
10:59He's a handsome guy.
11:00Let's go to Gary in Culpepper.
11:03Gary apparently upset at Cakes for calling Culpepper the laurel of Virginia.
11:07I didn't call it that.
11:09I'm now getting thrown under the bus.
11:12Hey, guys, I do take offense to a certain degree of you guys downgrading Culpepper.
11:19I know nothing about it.
11:22When Jason states that he doesn't think it's very good, and one of you say that, oh, it's
11:30like Laurel, and one say it's like Woodbridge, that could be further from the truth, guys.
11:35I've been on the community board of supervisors here in Culpepper for 10 years.
11:40Boring.
11:41All right.
11:41All right.
11:42What's great about it?
11:43You got neighbors hitting each other with hammers.
11:45Culpepper is in the middle of everything.
11:47It's a beautiful community consisting of 60,000 people.
11:51Yeah.
11:52And a lot of those people watch you guys and listen to you guys on the radio.
11:57That's all right.
11:58Because there's a lot of commuters that live in Culpepper.
12:00Right.
12:00So I'd be careful about downgrading Culpepper.
12:04Well, we don't have to lie.
12:07If it's a run-down town full of hillbillies, it is what it is.
12:13It's three hours from the beach.
12:15Right.
12:16It's 40 minutes from Charlottesville.
12:17Hold on.
12:18Three hours from the beach is a calling card?
12:20And 45 minutes from Dulles Airport.
12:21Okay.
12:22But you're pointing to other places.
12:24What are the highlights of Culpepper itself?
12:26Like, if you told me right now, here are the top three spots in Culpepper you have to go to,
12:32what is it?
12:33The Slaughterhouse?
12:34What's the Slaughterhouse?
12:36Culpepper has a lot of life projects here in Culpepper.
12:39The tax rate is the lowest in Virginia.
12:41That's not what I asked.
12:42I said, give me the top three places to go.
12:45It's a beautiful community with shops.
12:49And at one time, it was voted one of the top ten communities in the nation.
12:53Okay.
12:54But right now, one of the top three places to go to.
12:56If I went to Culpepper, what would I do?
12:58By degrading Culpepper, you're not helping yourselves.
13:02It doesn't really matter.
13:03It's just my opinion, guys.
13:04Okay, can you help us?
13:06Can you help us understand?
13:08It's a beautiful community.
13:09Oh, my God.
13:11Do they have a good golf course out there?
13:12Do they have any golf courses out there?
13:13Can you help us understand what is great there?
13:15I live on the golf course.
13:16Which golf course?
13:17I live on the golf course.
13:18Which one?
13:18I have a golf cart in my garage.
13:21I go down to the golf course all the time.
13:24I hit balls.
13:25I'm a five handicap.
13:26All right.
13:27I'll kill you.
13:29And I've been playing golf for a long time.
13:32Is it a country club or is it a public course?
13:34It's the Culpepper Country Club.
13:36All right.
13:36All right.
13:36I'm going to look it up.
13:37I actually think I've played there before.
13:38Yeah.
13:39That tracks.
13:40That makes sense.
13:41But I'll be honest with you.
13:42I haven't spent a lot of time on Culpepper at all.
13:43I would just say, Gary.
13:44I just don't know.
13:45We're just having fun.
13:46Yeah.
13:46Well, that's why you do not speculate.
13:49Well, I would just say don't take it so seriously.
13:52And come and visit Culpepper.
13:53Then you can.
13:55Appearance fee.
13:57Appearance fee.
13:57I've never seen a guy with so much pride.
13:59But you also haven't answered my basic question.
14:02I'm going to give you another chance.
14:03Give me the top three spots.
14:06If the junkies were to go for a day, where do we go and Culpepper to have a good time?
14:11Give me the top three spots.
14:13Top three attractions.
14:14Specifics.
14:15I would say you could visit, as far as restaurants, we have Davis Street, which is one of the finest
14:21streets in the region as far as restaurants and shops.
14:27All right.
14:28Restaurants?
14:28It's About Time is a great restaurant to go to.
14:321938 is a great restaurant to go to.
14:34All right.
14:36We have...
14:37All right.
14:37Besides the restaurants, what else would I do?
14:39A community public pool.
14:40We have a field house.
14:41We just opened up several years ago.
14:44We have the mountains that are 20 miles away, the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in Spurryville,
14:50Virginia.
14:50That's another city.
14:52You keep naming other things.
14:54We're three hours away from this.
14:56Go to the mountains, which are 20 minutes away.
14:58I'm asking you what's in Culpepper.
15:00He's not going to answer.
15:01Very awkward.
15:02He loves Culpepper.
15:03He loves Culpepper.
15:03He just answered you as far as Culpepper.
15:05Plus, we have a lot less congestion than you do in Northern Virginia.
15:09Now, that is an attraction.
15:10It's 90% agricultural here in Culpepper.
15:13Yeah.
15:13And the traffic is not as bad as what you all are living in up there.
15:18So, it depends on what type of quality of life that you want.
15:22Right.
15:22Listen, Gary, God bless you.
15:24Don't take it so serious.
15:25Don't take it so serious.
15:26We're just having fun.
15:26We're kind of making fun of it.
15:27I'm a serious guy much of the time.
15:29All right.
15:29Okay.
15:30We sound like it.
15:34I bet you're awesome at parties, Gary.
15:37I hope I'm being downgraded.
15:39I have to stand up and play a little defense here.
15:42All right.
15:42All right.
15:43All right.
15:43Have a good day.
15:44No problem.
15:44Just pay me an appearance for you.
15:46I'll be the grand marshal of the Culpepper parade.
15:49Just contact somebody in the sales office.
15:51You're at the fan.
15:53Whatever.
15:54Hey, one of the highlights is in 2014, they installed energy-efficient LED street lighting
16:01across the downtown Cakes.
16:02Okay.
16:03I'm sure Gary was spearheading that whole thing.
16:05And he could visit the 1904 Culpepper train station.
16:08All I know is I'm never going to be on the board of supervisors for any town or any city.
16:14You don't have that kind of pride?
16:15No.
16:16That kind of work ethic?
16:17I'm not about public service.
16:20It's not really in my wheelhouse.
16:22You know what?
16:22He's proud of his town.
16:23Good for him.
16:24He's proud of his town.
16:25He should be.
16:25Good for Gurry.
16:26I'm glad he called in.
16:27Good for Gurry and Culpepper.
16:28I mean, it doesn't affect me.
16:30I'm glad he called in.
16:31Right, right.
16:31All right.
16:31Defended his town.
16:32He can do that.
16:33It's an open line Thursday.
16:34You can do that throughout the show.
16:35When we come back, we'll do the NFC East power rankings.
16:38We'll break down the offensive lines in the NFC East next on The Fan.
