00:06whereby he was dressed in a full 2012 Redskins No. 10, his jersey uniform.
00:15It was white on white, by the way, the white tops and the white bottoms,
00:19if you were wondering.
00:21He had his Rookie of the Year trophy behind him.
00:25That's what people have told me it was.
00:26Is that true, Max?
00:27That was his Rookie of the Year trophy that was sitting behind him,
00:30and then he grabs it and puts it on the floor in front of his seat.
00:33Yeah, that's what it looked like it was.
00:35I'm pretty sure that, yeah.
00:37That's what everybody says it was, so I'll take everyone's word that that's what he had there.

00:46There's some music playing, but there's him with the helmet, by the way, with the logo on it,

00:54He's looking upset, off-put, annoyed, pensive.

01:06and then posted on the social media video is, quote,
01:12preparing for my Netflix documentary about why they kept running me
01:18when I had only one leg against Seattle in 2012, closed quote.
01:25So let me just first ask you, Max, because whenever I see this stuff,
01:31we can get fooled.
01:33That was actually his Instagram.
01:35That actually was RG3.
01:37That actually was a real video, correct?
01:40Correct.
01:41That is Bobby Three Sticks.
01:42I'm staring at the video right now.
01:43I know his face.
01:45Seen it for years.
01:46That's him.
01:47Right.
01:47This was not AI created.
01:50He also posted another one this time yesterday or two days ago,
01:57something like that, with his wife Greta,
01:59and it says us preparing for a Netflix documentary on how many bad looks
02:03you get in an interracial marriage.
02:05So Bob is very up-to-date on this trend.
02:09Well, look, he's pitching for, you know, a Netflix series.
02:13I mean, it would certainly be interesting,
02:16a Netflix series on what happened in the Seattle game.
02:21Of course, what we all know the first video,
02:23as I described, what he was referring to.
02:27He was referring to, for those that don't know,
02:29and it has been 13 years, over 13 years,
02:32crazy that it's been that long.
02:33He was referring to an infamous game in franchise history,
02:40the playoff game in January of 2013,
02:43following that amazing 2012 season,
02:46where he had, at that point,
02:48the greatest rookie season for a quarterback in NFL history.
02:51It would be topped by Jaden Daniels in 2024,
02:55when his team, our NFC East champion Washington Redskins,
03:02lost a playoff game at FedEx Field to the Seattle Seahawks,
03:0624-14.
03:07A game, by the way, in which Washington led 14-0,
03:10and it was on his second touchdown pass
03:13that he may have initially or once again injured the knee
03:19that was injured a few weeks earlier.
03:21The game was notable, as we all know,
03:24because in the fourth quarter, down 21-14,
03:28the lead blown,
03:31Robert tried to go down to field
03:33what was a very low snap from the center.
03:35I think it was Will Montgomery was the center,
03:38deep in his own territory,
03:40and as he bent down and planted his right foot
03:44to grab the ball,
03:46his right knee buckled,
03:49and it didn't look pretty.
03:51On an ugly turf, you know,
03:53not even much grass, a lot of dirt.
03:56We know what the turf problems were
03:58over the years at FedEx,
03:59especially when you get to January.
04:01He collapsed in a heap,
04:03in a clump of dirt on that field,
04:06and he was done physically at that point.
04:11A completely torn ACL,
04:13a completely torn LCL,
04:15and more, meniscus damage, everything.
04:19And look, that play
04:21and the lead-up to that play
04:23has been discussed, debated, documented,
04:27not Netflix-style,
04:29not 30-for-30-style,
04:31but over and over for 13 years,
04:34you know, since it happened.
04:36It will go down,
04:37certainly is one of the most memorable games
04:39in franchise history for the wrong reasons.
04:43You know, it's going to go down
04:44along with the Super Bowl loss to the Raiders,
04:48the Clint Longley game,
04:49the Aikman to Rocket Ishmael game.
04:52This is in that list,
04:54and there's a list of memorable heartbreaks,
04:57and this is probably at the top of that list.
05:01It was the lead-up, though,
05:03to that final blow,
05:04the reaching for that low snap
05:06and going down in a clump
05:08on the field at FedEx.
05:10The lead-up is as important
05:13and would be very interesting
05:15to hear a Netflix or a 30-for-30
05:19or whatever documented, you know.
05:21By the way, I've said for 13 years
05:24or certainly 11 or 12 years,
05:26if they ever do, you know,
05:29a special, a 30-for-30
05:32on Robert Griffin III,
05:33it's going to be fascinating
05:35because, look, it is a great story.
05:37It's like Heisman Trophy winner,
05:40second pick in the draft,
05:43meteoric rookie season rise,
05:46and then an almost immediate fall.
05:49I mean, at the height
05:52and then literally within a year and a half,
05:55he's done for the most part.
05:58But it's the lead-up to that final play
06:01in the Seattle game
06:03that will be the most interesting part.
06:06And then the immediate aftermath,
06:08the surgery,
06:09and then the conversation he had
06:11with Mike Shanahan
06:12and Kyle Shanahan
06:15and others
06:16in that infamous meeting
06:20that even Robert has admitted
06:22actually took place.
06:23Now, I think there are some differences
06:25in what happened.
06:26You know, Mike told us
06:28in a very famous, you know,
06:30sort of documenting blow-by-blow,
06:33the Robert Griffin III saga here,
06:36that he came in,
06:37he wrote on a whiteboard
06:38the 21 plays he would not run anymore,
06:41and said a lot of things
06:43that made Mike
06:44and everybody in that room,
06:46Matt LaFleur,
06:47Kyle Shanahan,
06:47and Mike believe
06:48that this had come straight from Dan.
06:51Not that Robert didn't want it,
06:53but that Dan had approved it.
06:54Dan was a big part of all of this.
06:56But, you know,
06:57the lead-up, you know,
06:58back in that moment
07:00was the first blow
07:03was in the Baltimore game.
07:05You know, early December,
07:06FedEx field,
07:08exciting game.
07:10Robert gets hit
07:11by Haloti Nada
07:12in the middle of the field,
07:13and that hit results
07:14in an LCL sprain,
07:16which cost him
07:18the next game
07:19against Cleveland,
07:20and there was some thought
07:21he could be out
07:21for even longer than that.
07:23And that's really
07:24where the drama
07:25truly begins.
07:27The Nada hit.
07:30Doctors ruled him
07:31out of that game
07:31almost immediately
07:33for the next game
07:34in Cleveland.
07:35Called him not only
07:36out of that game,
07:37but it would be
07:38a reassessment
07:39a week later
07:39as to what would happen
07:41after the Cleveland game.
07:43But he did not
07:44want out of the next game
07:46with the sprained LCL,
07:48which was a pretty
07:50serious injury
07:50and one that
07:51he needed to kind of
07:52be protected from himself
07:54in that moment.
07:55He wanted to play.
07:56You know,
07:57one thing you can't say
07:58about RG3
07:59is that he wasn't
08:00a baller,
08:01and he wasn't
08:02a competitor
08:03because he was.
08:04He was.
08:05And I'm being
08:07totally serious.
08:08Like,
08:09you think back
08:09to some of those games.
08:10He was a battler.
08:12He was a fearless player.
08:14And he didn't want
08:16Kirk Cousins
08:16to get a chance
08:17against the Browns.
08:19So despite not
08:20practicing all week long
08:22leading up
08:23to the Cleveland game,
08:24despite being ruled out
08:26by the medical people,
08:28he did his best
08:29to play in that game.
08:31According to many
08:32over the years,
08:33Mike Shanahan
08:34on this show
08:36in a two-hour
08:37blow-by-blow
08:39of everything
08:40that happened
08:41when he was
08:41the head coach here
08:43from his perspective,
08:45what happened
08:46was before
08:48that Cleveland game,
08:49RG3 took the field
08:51in a personal workout
08:52to prove
08:53that he was healthy
08:54enough to go
08:55before that
08:57one o'clock kick
08:57against Cleveland.
08:59And the owner,
09:00Dan Snyder,
09:01he was convinced
09:03because he's brilliant
09:04and he knows football
09:05and he certainly
09:07had gone to med school
09:09for several years
09:10to identify
09:11that my guy,
09:13Robert,
09:14is ready to play,
09:15Mike.
09:15And he went to Mike
09:16and said,
09:17Robert's ready to play.
09:18He's healthy.
09:19He says he can go.
09:21And Mike
09:22looked at Dan
09:23and this was the way
09:24Mike described it
09:25and said,
09:26he's not playing.
09:28He's been ruled out
09:29by our team doctors.
09:31Hey, Dan,
09:32athletes always want
09:34to play.
09:34Competitors always
09:36want to play.
09:37The doctors ruled him out.
09:38He didn't practice.
09:40He's not playing.
09:42Dan was not happy.
09:44And by extension,
09:45once Dan told Robert,
09:47he wasn't happy.
09:48And that's where
09:50things got interesting
09:51because then the game
09:53happened in Cleveland
09:54and this would be
09:55a big part of any sort
09:57of Netflix documentary
09:58documentary about this.
09:59By the way,
10:00I think it's totally
10:01worthy of a multi-episode
10:04documentary.
10:04This was a fascinating,
10:07meteoric,
10:08and immediate
10:09rise and fall
10:10like we've never
10:11seen before.
10:12I mean,
10:13you'll come up
10:13with examples,
10:14but the game
10:15was played
10:16and Kirk Cousins
10:17lit the Browns up
10:19in a game they had
10:20to have.
10:20They couldn't afford
10:20to lose another game
10:21or they'd be knocked
10:22out of the playoff race.
10:23So this was a critical game.
10:25Kirk threw for 329 yards,
10:28two touchdowns
10:29and Washington
10:30rolled the Browns
10:3138-21.
10:33And after that game,
10:35things happened
10:37that really,
10:39really irked
10:40not only the coaching staff,
10:42but many in the locker room.
10:44RG3 held his own
10:46press conference
10:48following that game.
10:49Unprecedented.
10:51Not scheduled
10:52by PR people.
10:54You know,
10:55after an NFL game,
10:56it's the quarterback
10:57and the head coach.
10:58They hold
10:59press conferences
11:00and then
11:00the beat reporters
11:02and all the other
11:02reporters that are there,
11:04they descend on the locker room
11:05and get players
11:05kind of that way
11:06one-on-one.
11:07But it's the coach
11:08and the quarterback
11:09that actually hold,
11:11you know,
11:11a podium press conference.
11:12But it's the quarterback
11:13that played in the game,
11:15not the quarterback
11:16that didn't play
11:17in the game.
11:18But Robert held
11:19his own press conference
11:20and he was not happy
11:22about not playing.
11:23and he expressed
11:24his unhappiness.
11:26After the team
11:27had won a critical game
11:29with their backup quarterback,
11:31he made it about himself.
11:34He was pissed.
11:35He was not happy.
11:37And from that moment on,
11:39the relationship
11:40between Robert
11:42and certainly his head coach
11:44and some of the other coaches
11:46changed.
11:47Now,
11:48did they see signs
11:49of some of the
11:50self,
11:51you know,
11:52kind of importance,
11:54self-absorption,
11:55you know,
11:56prior to that?
11:57Yes.
11:57But that was the moment.
11:59What are you doing?
12:00We just won
12:02a critical football game
12:04without you.
12:05Thank God
12:06because you got us
12:07into this position
12:08with your incredible play.
12:10But you don't go
12:12hold a press conference
12:12and be angry.
12:14So the next week
12:16leading up to
12:16what was their next game
12:18and a crucial game,
12:19they had to win.
12:20They had to win out
12:21to get to the postseason.
12:22So they had Philly
12:23and Dallas remaining.
12:24And the lead up
12:25to the Philadelphia game
12:26was Robert Griffins
12:27playing,
12:28but the doctors
12:29were not thrilled
12:30about it,
12:30but they cleared him
12:32even though he was
12:33struggling in practice
12:34during the course
12:35of the week
12:36as Mike told us.
12:38They,
12:39oh,
12:39I forgot a big part
12:41of the Cleveland game.
12:42Kirk Cousins
12:42didn't run anywhere
12:43near as much
12:44as Robert ran.
12:45The zone read
12:46was not a big part
12:47of the game plan.
12:48There was a lot
12:49of play action,
12:50a lot of bootleg,
12:52and that's what
12:53Kirk did well.
12:54Robert did other stuff well.
12:56Kirk told me
12:57a few months ago
12:58when I had him
12:59on the show
12:59in going back
13:01to that game,
13:01he said,

13:03it's not true
13:04that there weren't,
13:05that the zone read
13:06was not in the game plan.
13:07It was in the game plan.
13:09There were just,
13:10the reads
13:11weren't to keep it.
13:13It was to hand it off
13:14to Alfred Morris.

13:17was there as much

13:18with Robert?
13:19Probably not,
13:19but it wasn't

13:23that the Shanahan's
13:24had a completely
13:25different game plan

13:27than for Robert.

13:31that he was running
13:33in his mind's eye
13:35a different offense.
13:36They were putting him
13:37at risk,
13:38but not Cousins at risk.
13:39Two different style
13:40quarterbacks,
13:41obviously,
13:41but Kirk claims
13:42the zone read was in.
13:44The Philadelphia game,
13:45he did not look right.
13:46You know,
13:47at one point,
13:48Mike told the story,
13:49he was limping
13:50to the sidelines
13:51on his own read keeper,
13:53and Mike immediately
13:54pulled him to the side
13:55and said,
13:55if you can't run that play
13:57the right way,
13:58I'm pulling you right now
13:59and putting Kirk
14:00back into the game
14:00and putting Kirk
14:01into the game,
14:02and Robert sort of
14:04shaped up
14:05and ran it much better
14:07after that.
14:08He wasn't right
14:09after the LCL sprain
14:12against Baltimore.
14:13He played exceptionally well,
14:15even though he wasn't
14:16completely healthy
14:16in the season finale
14:18win over the Cowboys
14:20where Alfred Morris
14:21rushed for 200 yards
14:23in that game.
14:24Robert,
14:24if you recall,
14:25only threw for 100 yards.
14:27He was 9 of 18
14:28for 100 yards.
14:29He rushed for 63 yards,
14:31though,
14:31and he was a big part of it.
14:33Look,
14:34Morris feasted that year
14:35because RG3
14:38was a threat
14:39to run the ball
14:40on almost every play.
14:42The presentation
14:43of him as a runner
14:44in that offense
14:45made it so much easier
14:47for everybody else.
14:49I think we all
14:49understand that.
14:51You know,
14:51and of course,
14:52him running
14:53that kind of style offense,
14:55Kaepernick that year,
14:56Russell Wilson,
14:57who they played
14:58in the playoff game,
14:59all of a sudden,
15:00we had dual threat
15:01quarterbacks coming
15:02out of the woodwork,
15:02and we've had that
15:03ever since.
15:04You know,
15:04the claims back then,
15:06remember,
15:07oh,
15:07this is a fad.
15:08You know,
15:08this is the wildcat.
15:10This is something else.
15:10It'll go away.
15:11Here we are 13 years later
15:13in the zone.
15:14Reed is still a big part
15:15of a lot of offensive attacks
15:17with quarterbacks
15:18who are mobile.
15:20Robert made all of that
15:21possible in 2012
15:22because he was such,
15:25such a threat
15:26as a runner.
15:27And then,
15:28you know,
15:28he also was a threat
15:30with his arm
15:31because he could
15:32throw the ball
15:32and he could throw it deep
15:34and he could throw it
15:34accurately.
15:36But,
15:37the playoff game
15:39itself,
15:41there in,
15:43you know,
15:43there's a lot of,
15:45you know,
15:46competing opinions
15:47about what happened.
