With the Washington Commanders' training camp beginning next week there are still players on the current roster that fans are split on regarding their role on the roster. Kevin Sheehan, Producer Max and listeners of the show give their analysis on who they think are the most divisive players on the Commanders past and present.

00:08He wrote, who are we as a commander's fan base most divided by?
00:13And he focused on the current roster.
00:15And the options were Ben Sennett, Luke McCaffrey, Mikey Sanrestil.
00:19And then everything we need is in the room.
00:22You know, that sentiment.
00:23Because there are, I don't know if it's a divided thing, but they're definitely, and I've dealt with this for
00:28years.
00:29And it hasn't even mattered, this situation with the team.
00:32Some are just hell-bent on, I like what we have.
00:38Let's just keep adding.
00:39Let's build it, you know, one block at a time, and we'll get there.
00:44And that really, really became a big, big part of the lead-up to the 2024 draft.
00:52There were a lot of you, a lot of you who were absolutely convinced that Sam Howell was good enough
00:59to build around.
01:01As long as they got a new offensive coordinator, new head coach, etc.
01:05All right.
01:06So, for me, I look at, for me, you know, some of you have tweeted in some really good ones.
01:13I think I can't find anybody that was more polarizing, that the fan base was more divided on than Kirk
01:22Cousins.
01:22Because RG3, the fan base was not divided on him at all in 2012.
01:29And really at all in 2013.
01:32You know, even though we were obviously starting to get, you know, we were starting to sniff out what he
01:39was in that locker room.
01:42And with the coaches and the self-absorption, the whole thing.
01:46I mean, the all-in for week one, you know, the documentary executive produced by himself in that offseason was
01:53a bit much.
01:55And the hashtagging of every single thing, you know, trying to get patents on different things.
02:01The whole thing was just a bit much as he's battling back from that injury.
02:05But he didn't become dividing until probably late in 2013, 2014.
02:17It would probably be more Jay's first year when he was still the starting quarterback.
02:21And then Jay obviously quickly realized that it wasn't going to work with him.
02:28So, yeah, I think Cousins in terms of just a constant fan base being divided.
02:35You know, 15, 16.
02:37I mean, we had three years.
02:39And then in the offseasons in each one of them, because of the contract stuff, as Galdi used to call
02:45it, the cha-cha-cha of Kirk Cousins' contract conversation.
02:51LeVar Arrington is in that conversation.
02:55Steve tweeted, LeVar number one all time.
02:59So much talent, but so little production divided the fan base.
03:03Look, the little production with LeVar was because he was injured a lot.
03:09I've said this about LeVar Arrington many times in the past.
03:12If Marty Schottenheimer had remained the head coach, look, the injuries, maybe the injuries continue to happen.
03:19And that's the unfortunate part of LeVar's professional career is that he could never stay healthy.
03:25But in terms of the kind of player he was in 2001, he was so good.
03:32So good.
03:33And he would have gotten so much better under a coach like Marty Schottenheimer.
03:39I think LeVar has said that before.
03:41I think LeVar has admitted had Marty stayed on as the coach, he would have had his best chance to
03:47succeed here.
03:48You know, he knew what Snyder was and how bad the organization was and the cesspool that it had turned
03:56into.
03:56And he got out of it, but he just couldn't stay healthy.
03:59But I agree that during LeVar's days here, there was a lot of division on him.

04:11Now, in terms of the current roster, let me just tell you, this is personal and I don't project this
04:19on everybody else.
04:20But man, have I had it out with so many of you over the last few years over Terry.
04:27And it's not because I don't think Terry's good.
04:30It's because I don't think Terry is an elite receiver.
04:34I don't think he was an elite receiver.
04:37I don't think he is an elite receiver.
04:39Many of you have thought that we can't do better than Terry.
04:44He's great.
04:44He's an elite level, top five, no worse than top 10 receiver.
04:49And I have always felt he's outside that group, but really good.
04:54But the fan base isn't divided on Terry.
04:57Everybody thinks Terry's good and good for the organization, for sure.
05:02Some just think he's great and others think he's good.
05:07I actually like the list that at red zone in the lab put together, because I do think that the
05:15fan base is a little bit divided, although maybe tilting more negatively on Senate McCaffrey.
05:20But I'm going to throw one more in here.
05:22And it's I know it's super early on this because he's only played one year.
05:29But I think that there's some division on Bill, on Krosky Merritt.
05:35I think there are many people that think this guy's going to be a star running back.
05:41And the other half thinks we got to do better at running back.
05:47So I think I'd include him.
05:49I mean, one season in the books.
05:53And I thought about Duran, but I don't even know what Duran is to anybody anymore.
05:59This is going to be his final year here, more likely than not.
06:02I am really hoping, fingers crossed, because the last time he was in a contract year, he had his best
06:08season.
06:09He's not too old to be a dominant player.
06:12Last year was at best, at best, an inconsistent season.
06:18And let me just say, I think that I feel very strongly that had there been any kind of market
06:26for Duran, he wouldn't be here.
06:28I just don't think there was a market for him.

06:43Max, what are your answers before we get to the calls?
06:46All-time is tough for me just because, I mean, I was so young during those, like the LeVar Arrington
06:51draft and all of that.
06:52But one guy that I do feel like everybody is still kind of divided on, first-round pick for the
06:58Washington Commanders,
06:59or was it the football team at the time?
07:01Chase Young, I think.
07:03Like, he was, when he came in and he had a good first year and didn't really build off of
07:09it too much.
07:09But now that he's playing really well in New Orleans, a lot of people kind of wanted to give him
07:16another look in this offseason or when he was available one or two offseasons ago.
07:20So Chase Young would be that guy in my mind, just not delivering and then going elsewhere and still playing
07:26well.
07:26I think that's a pretty good one.
07:29Like, I think Chase Young, first of all, drafting Chase Young, the fan base was divided on to a certain
07:35degree because some people wanted quarterback there.
07:38There are several callers who have called in that have sworn, and I believe them, that they were Justin Herbert,
07:46you know, people.
07:47Or Tua people, you know, at number two.
07:49Justin Herbert would have looked much better than Chase Young, obviously, at number two if you redraft there.
07:55But, yeah, and look, he had a great rookie season.
08:00And then, you know, injuries and I think the overall approach he took professionally wasn't up to snuff anyway.
08:09All right, what about current roster?
08:11Current roster, I can make a case for a couple of guys.
08:14I mean, you mentioned Bill.
08:16Nick Allegretti is one that I think people are kind of divided by because we don't really know what he's
08:20going to be doing.
08:20Or we don't know if he can play center.
08:24But on the other side of the ball, I think, honestly, Quan Martin is a guy that a lot of
08:31people are divided on because Dan Quinn really hyped him up coming into last season.
08:35And it was a dud.
08:37And he was coming off of a pretty decent year, hoping to kind of catapult and go a little bit
08:44further.
08:44But we're still kind of waiting on it.
08:47So Quan Martin would be one of those guys.
08:49Johnny Newton's another going into year three.
08:52People haven't seen a ton, but he was really rehabbing in his first year.
08:55And then second season, he's kind of finding his groove, getting a little bit more confidence that he can play
09:00in the NFL.
09:01So I'm excited to see what he can do in year three.
09:03But I feel like people are a little bit divided on him as well.

09:24Historically, I think you nailed it.
09:26Shanahan, Burt Cousins.
09:28And on the tail end, like the mid-tail end of RG3 were the most hotly contested sports radio calls.
09:37I was obviously very anti-Shanahan.
09:39And I remember our calls back and forth then.
09:42On the current roster, I'll add a new person that you didn't say.
09:46I think there's a lot of division on Adam Peters.
09:49You know my opinion on him.
09:51I think Quinn maybe a little bit less.
09:53I think Quinn is very likable there, but no one's looking at him as some elite coach.
09:59But I think there's a lot of questions around Peters.
10:01I don't sense any division on Adam Peters.
10:03Literally none.
10:05I think you're the only caller that has reservations about Adam Peters.
10:09I think Dan Quinn, there is definitely some divided opinion on Dan Quinn right now.
10:16No doubt.
10:17Not on Adam Peters.
10:18I mean, I'm pretty good at taking the pulse of this fan base.
10:25There is absolutely no legitimate division over Adam Peters.
10:31The way I feel right now, Dan Quinn's different.
10:35Dan Quinn's different because there is an actual record attached to Dan Quinn's head coaching career.
10:42And a lot of people will point to that and say,
10:44We hired average, and he's been average at 12-5 and then 5-12.
10:50Yeah, that's been my point.
10:50Yeah, that's been my point with Dan Quinn.
10:53But I think there is more division on Adam Peters.
10:58If you ran a poll on your Twitter site or something,
11:01I don't think it would be 50-50 or 60-40, but I think there's more division.
11:06And I think there will be more division coming this year.
11:09Let me just say, here's the thing you'd need to look for, all right?
11:15The response wouldn't be as passionate about Adam Peters, no matter where the numbers played out.
11:21The response associated with Dan Quinn would be much more passionate.
11:26The numbers would be much greater of people that feel something about Dan Quinn.
11:31Adam Peters hasn't been here long enough for people to feel enough, for enough people to feel.
11:36Some people are quick trigger, like you, all right, even though their very first season,
11:42they nearly went to the Super Bowl, and then their second season, they were decimated by injuries.
11:48But I think most people would take a step back and say,
11:52Wait a minute, let's give him time.
11:54The cupboard was bare, et cetera.
11:56Quinn's got much more of a track record, and I think the feel on Quinn would be more passionate one
12:04way or the other.
12:05I just don't think I'd be able to generate a lot of passion for Peters one way or the other
12:10right now,
12:11like I could for Quinn.
12:13Yeah, I do agree with you on the track record for Quinn and more people having an opinion.
12:19The reason I'd say it's going to be more negative on Peters is when you see the team this year
12:25with the 31st-ranked tight ends and wide receivers and the 32nd-ranked running back room,
12:31I think people are like, Why haven't we done better?
12:35So I think you would generally...
12:36Well, we know why.

12:39I mean, we've covered this ground.

12:46Jeremiah Love probably would have been a pick.
12:48They went out and signed a running back.
12:50They certainly tried to sign two of the best receivers in free agency,
12:53and they didn't sign those guys.
12:56And maybe they would have selected Carnell Tate had Tate fallen to seven.

13:01But again, like, I've done this with you too many times, so it's getting boring.
13:05But they signed more new players than any team in the league, 17,
13:10and they spent top three money in free agency,
13:12and they tried to spend a lot more and add more players.
13:17So it's not a one-way decision.
13:20You know this.
13:21It takes two in free agency.
13:23Yeah, but that brings up...
13:25And I've said this to you before.
13:27That brings up the question of why aren't they coming?

13:30Well, they are.
13:3117 came.
13:32More than any team in the league.
13:3517 players.
13:36New players signed with this team.
13:39Number one in the league.
13:40Mediocre players.
13:41Well, first of all, that's your opinion.
13:44Adafi Owe got a four-year, $100 million deal,
13:47and there was definite competition for him.
13:49There was definite competition for Chennault.
13:51There was definite competition for Chason.
13:54We saw that as part of the draft.
13:56Same thing with Cross.
13:57Same thing with Chig.
13:59So it's not like there wasn't competition for many of the players
14:03that ended up signing here.
14:05You can't say, why aren't they desired,
14:09and they've got the number one count in new players in the league
14:14through free agency.
14:15Because it wasn't like they overpaid everybody.
14:17It's not like they had to offer all these players outrageous contracts
14:22like Snyder used to have to do.
14:26Kevin, doesn't it give you pause
14:28that despite adding the most players, like you said,
14:32and spending the third most amount of money,
14:35every analyst group, Vegas over-under everywhere,
14:38has this as a mediocre non-playoff team?
14:41That should tell you the guys they added aren't good enough.
14:44No, no, it doesn't give me pause at all.
14:47Because last year, New England added more new players
14:50than any team in the league and had an over-under of 7.5,
14:53and nobody expected anything from them.
14:54By the way, nobody expected anything from Seattle either
14:57with an over-under number of 7.5.
15:00It's the NFL.
15:01Things change.
15:02It's incredibly dynamic, as you know.
15:04Yes, it's fun to look at these lists
15:07and consider what others around the league are saying
15:10about players and teams and position groups and all that,
15:14especially this time of year.
15:15But I have no idea what's going to happen in 2026,
15:18nor do you, nor do most people.
15:21Does the roster look just absolutely killer on paper?
15:26It doesn't.
15:27But they tried to make it look more killer than it is.
15:32I think defensively, they've added a lot of good players.
15:35They've added a lot of good players defensively.
15:38Maybe not an elite player, but they've added a lot of good players
15:42to an area that needed players, good players.
15:46But we'll see.
15:47Maybe they ended up killing it in a draft with Stiles and Williams
15:50with the first two picks.

16:06And then all-time, who's the player all-time
16:09that the fan base was most divided on?
16:12I think Kirk Cousins was the most divided we've ever been
16:15on a player as a fan base.
16:18And then currently on the roster, I think that's a harder one,
16:23but there are a couple of possibilities, you know,
16:26Sinnott and McCaffrey and Sanristill and maybe even Bill
16:29and maybe even Allegretti.
16:32You know, that's a harder question because, you know,
16:35there's a lot of unknown just in general.
16:38But, you know, in the granular conversations detail-wise
16:43that we have about our football team,
16:45some of you sense the division on certain players.
16:48I will admit, by the way, in kind of thinking this through,
16:52I don't want to lose this thought.
16:53We'll get to the break in a moment, Max.
16:55You know, when we're talking about the current roster
16:58and fans being divided on players like Sinnott and Luke McCaffrey,
17:03we're talking about the portion of the fan base
17:06that is not the majority, that pays attention to all of this stuff.
17:11You know, it's not the big macro topics
17:15where you appeal to the masses in the fan base.
17:19I've said this many times.
17:20This time of year, a lot of you really get into it,
17:23and I'm glad.
17:24And clearly, I'm happy about it.
17:26But the majority of Redskin Commanders fans,
17:30they don't start to pay attention until post-Labor Day.
