16:19Paul said to the centurion
16:21is it legal for you to lash a man
16:24who is a Roman citizen without a proper trial
16:31when the centurion heard this
16:33he immediately went to the commanding officer
16:36and reported it saying
16:37what are you doing?
16:39this man is a Roman citizen
16:43so the commanding officer came and asked Paul
16:47tell me are you a Roman citizen?
16:52Paul replied yes
16:55the commanding officer answered
16:58I acquired this citizenship with a large sum of money
17:04but I was born a citizen
17:06Paul replied
17:10then those who were about to interrogate him
17:12stayed away from him
17:14and the commanding officer was frightened
17:17when he realised that Paul was a Roman citizen
17:20and that he had tied him up
17:24the next day
17:26because the commanding officer wanted to know the true reason
17:28Paul was being accused by the Jews
17:31he released him
17:32and ordered the chief priests
17:34and the whole council to assemble
17:37he then brought Paul down
17:39and had him stand before them
17:43Paul looked directly at the council and said
17:47brothers I have lived my life with a clear conscience
17:49before God to this day
17:54at that the high priest Ananias
17:56ordered those standing near Paul
17:58to strike him on the meds
18:03then Paul said to him
18:05God is going to strike you
18:07you whitewashed wall
18:09do you sit there judging me according to the law
18:12and in violation of the law
18:15you order me to be struck
18:20those standing near him said
18:22do you dare insult God's high priest?
18:27Paul replied
18:28I did not realise
18:30brothers
18:30that he was the high priest

19:02an argument broke out
19:03between the Pharisees

19:05and the assembly was divided

19:21and some experts in the law

19:35when the argument
19:36became so great
19:37the commanding officer
19:38feared
19:38that they might
19:39tear Paul to pieces
19:41and so he ordered
19:42the detachment
19:43to go down
19:44and take him away
19:45from them by force
19:46and return him
19:47to the barracks
19:52the following night

19:54near to Paul
