23:20The next day we put in at Sidon, and Julius, treating Paul kindly, allowed him to visit
23:27his friends, so that they could provide him with what he needed.
23:31From there we put out to sea, and sailed unto the lee of Cyprus, because the winds were
23:37against us.
23:40After we had sailed across the open sea, of Sicilia and Pamphylia, we put in at Myra
23:46in Lycia.
23:49There the Centurion found a ship from Alexandria, sailing for Italy, and he put us aboard it.
23:57We sailed slowly for many days, and arrived with difficulty off Nidus.
24:03Because the wind prevented us from going any further, we sailed under the lee of Crete,
24:09of Salmone.
24:11With difficulty, we sailed along the coast of Crete, and came to a place called Fairhavens,
24:16that was near the town of Lyssaia.
24:21Some considerable time had passed, and the voyage was now becoming dangerous, because the past
24:26was already over.
24:29Paul advised them,
24:31Men, I see the voyage will end in disaster, and great loss, not only of the cargo and the
24:37ship, but also of our lives.
24:41But the Centurion was more convinced by the captain and the ship's owner than by what Paul had said.
24:50Because the harbour was not suitable for spending the winter in, the majority decided to put out
24:56to sea from there.
24:59They hoped that somehow they would reach Phoenix, a harbour of Crete facing south-west and north-west,
25:06and spend the winter there.
25:09When the gentle south wind sprang up, they thought they could carry out their purpose,
25:14and so they weighed anchor and sailed close along the coast of Crete.
25:20Not long after this, a hurricane-force wind, called the Northeaster, blew down from the island.
25:26When the ship was coursing it and could not head into the wind, we gave way before it and were
25:32driven along.
25:35As we ran under the lee of a small island called Coda, we were able with difficulty to get the
25:41ship's boat under control.
25:44After the crew had hoisted it aboard, they used supports to go under-gird the ship.
25:51Fearing they would run aground on the surges, they lowered the sea anchor, and thus let themselves
25:57be driven along.
26:00The next day, because we were violently battered by the storm, they began throwing the cargo
26:06overboard, and on the third day, they threw the ship's gear overboard with their own hands.
26:13When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and the violent storm continued to batter
26:18us, we finally abandoned all hope of being saved.
26:24Since many of them had no desire to eat, Paul stood up among them and said,
26:31Men, you should have listened to me and not put out to sea from Crete, thus avoiding all this
26:37damage and loss.
26:39Now I advise you to keep up your courage, for there will be no loss of life among you, but
26:46only the ship will be lost.
26:50For last night an angel of the Lord, to whom I belong, and whom I serve, came to me and
26:56said, Do not be afraid, Paul.
26:58You must stand before Caesar, and God has graciously granted you the safety of all who are sailing
27:05with you.
27:07Therefore, keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God, that it will be just as
27:13I have been told.
27:16But we must run aground on some island.
27:22When the fourteenth night had come, and while we were being driven across the Adriatic sea
27:28about midnight, the sailors believed they were approaching some land.
27:35They took soundings, and found the water was twenty fathoms deep.
27:39When they had sailed a little further, they took soundings again, and found it to be fifteen
27:44fathoms.
27:46Because they were afraid we would run aground on the rocky coast, they threw out four anchors
27:51from the stern, and waited for day to appear.
27:57When the sailors tried to escape from the ship, and were lowering the ship's boat into the sea,
28:03pretending they were going to put out anchors from the bow, Paul said to the centurion
28:09and the soldiers, Unless these men stay with the ship, you cannot be saved.
28:16Then the soldiers cut the ropes of the ship's boat, and it was allowed to drift away.
28:24As day was about to dawn, Paul urged them all to take some food.
28:31He said,
28:49After he said this, Paul took bread and began to thank God in front of them, breaking it and eating.
28:57And so all of them were encouraged and took food for themselves.
29:02We were in all some two hundred and seventy-six persons on the ship.
29:08When they had eaten enough to be satisfied, they lightened the ship by throwing the wheat into the sea.
29:19When day came, they did not recognise the land, but they saw a bay with a beach, where they decided
29:25to run the ship aground if they could.
29:28And so they slipped the anchors and left them in the sea, and at the same time loosened the linkage
29:33that band the steering oars together.
29:38Then they hoisted the foresail to the wind and steered for the beach, but they encountered a patch of cross
29:45-current, and the ship ran aground.
29:49The bow stuck fast and could not be moved, but the stern was being broken by the force of the
29:54waves.
29:56Now the soldiers' plan was to kill the prisoners, so that none of them would escape by swimming away.
30:03But the centurion, wanting to save Paul's life, prevented them from carrying out their plan.
30:10He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to land, and the rest were to follow,
30:18some on planks and some on pieces of the ship.
30:21And in this way they were all brought safely to land.
30:26This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
30:36Collect for peace
30:38O God, who is the author of peace and lover of concord, in knowledge of whom stands our eternal life,
30:47whose service is perfect freedom,
30:50defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies, that we, surely trusting in your defence, may not
30:59fear the power of any adversaries.

31:13O Lord, our Heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, who has safely brought us to the beginning of this day,
31:22defend us in the same with your mighty power, and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither
31:30run into any kind of danger,
31:32but that all our doings may be ordered by your governance, but that all our doings may be ordered by
31:38your governance,
31:38to do always that which is righteous in your sight. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
31:49Lord, let me accept calmly all that this day might bring me, and let me devote myself completely to your
31:58sacred will.

32:09When unpredictable circumstances arise, do not let me forget that everything comes from you.

32:34Holy Spirit, help me to dedicate this day to my Lord and Saviour. Teach me to be just toward my

32:44never to provoke wrath or cause sorrow. Control my will and teach me to pray, to believe, to hope,
