00:00Something you probably never have to think about much less do is road maintenance.
00:03But as a family who lives off-grid, we have to maintain over a half mile of our road
00:07because if we don't, it will turn back into a four-wheel trail and nobody will do it.
00:11So every spring, that means clearing any sticks out of the ditches.
00:14The ditches can run, moving sticks so that my husband can add gravel and box blade the road
00:19to make it smooth and drivable again.
00:21We are evaluating what culverts are failing and replacing those,
00:24pulling any big trees that may have fallen on the road in the winter
00:26and hauling those back to our house to use for firewood.
00:29And just generally fixing up any issues that have come up in the road throughout the year.
00:32This is something that we have to do every spring and realistically every fall too.
00:36Another piece of our project list is working on our new driveway.
00:39We have a clearing that eventually will hold a house, a barn, and some animals,
00:43but it's taken a lot of work to get there.
00:45We've had to cut down a lot of trees, get some groundwork done,
00:48and then lay a base layer of gravel or big rock and then a smaller layer of gravel on top,
00:52which is really expensive and takes a lot of time.
00:54We're not a big operation and we don't have a ton of time,
00:57so we're doing it slowly with a budget and time that we can.
01:00But tree, gravel, and road work is just a normal park block.
