00:01are you doing okay? You know, most of the time when we hear that question,
00:07we answer before we even think. We say, yeah, I'm good, or I'm fine, or doing all right.
00:15You know, sometimes we are, but sometimes we say it because we don't have the energy to explain
00:22the truth. Sometimes we say it because we know the person asking is just being polite, and sometimes
00:31we say it because if we told the truth, we might not be able to keep ourselves together,
00:38because the real answer might not be, yeah, I'm doing great. It might be, no, not really.
00:48The answer might be, I'm tired. It might be I'm worried about my family. It might be I'm trying
00:56to trust God, but I feel like I'm barely hanging on. Or it might be I believe in Jesus, but
01:04I still feel
01:05overwhelmed. And I think we need to be honest about that. You know, too many people are walking around
01:12with a smile on their face, and a storm in their chest. They show up, they go to work, they
01:20answer
01:20messages, they take care of their kids. They say the right things, but inside, they're asking questions
01:29nobody hears. Questions like, God, do you even see me? God, are you still with me? God,
01:41God, why does this feel so heavy? And here's what I want you to know. Jesus is not bothered by
01:50your
01:51honesty. And that may sound simple, but I want to tell you, it's a big deal. Because a lot of
01:58people
01:58think they have to clean themselves up emotionally before they come to God. They think they have to
02:04sound strong. They have to have the right prayers, and those prayers have to sound impressive. They
02:11think faith means pretending nothing hurts. But that's not what we see when we look at Jesus.
02:20When Jesus walked through this world, he did not only spend time with people who had everything
02:26figured out. He spent time with people who were exhausted, ashamed, sick, afraid, lonely,
02:38confused, and broken. He sat with people others avoided. He touched people others would not touch.
02:48He listened to people others had already judged. He stopped for people the crowd was willing to ignore.
02:57And that tells us something beautiful about his heart. Jesus was never too holy to come close to
03:05hurting people. He was holy, and that holiness came near. It did not push people away. It reached for
03:15them. I want you to think about the woman at the well. She did not come to the well expecting
03:22a life-changing
03:23conversation. She was just doing what she had probably done many times before. Carrying water. Carrying shame.
03:34Carrying the weight of her story. You know, people knew about her. People had opinions about her.
03:44And maybe she had learned to live with being misunderstood. I think many of us do.
03:52Then Jesus met her there. He did not pretend he did not know her life. He already did before he
04:01even
04:01showed up. He knew the truth. And he still spoke to her. He still offered her living water. And he
04:10treated her
04:11like someone worth saving. I want to tell you something that most people overlook in that story.
04:19When Jesus was done telling the woman at the well, her life story, and offering her living water,
04:27she said, with excitement, by the way, I'm going to be going back to my town. In fact, she was
04:34going to run
04:34back to her town and tell everyone about him and what he did and how he knew everything about her.
04:42Now, you see, something happened there at that well that I think everyone overlooks.
04:48She had just self-ordained as the very first preacher recorded in the New Testament.
04:56She's the very first Christian preacher. Hear that again. The very first preacher in recorded history
05:05for Christianity was a woman. She went back to her town and she preached about Jesus.
05:14I call it preaching. You can also call it telling. So she went back and told the story.
05:20But she said she was going to tell everyone. So to me, that makes her the first preacher
05:27recorded in the New Testament because that happened before Jesus sent his disciples out onto the world
05:35to make disciples of others. She preached the word of the Lord in a Samaritan town.
05:43And I think that's amazing. I also think it's something that man-made religion actually overlooks
05:50because, notice I said man-made religion, the majority of the religious perspectives that we observe
05:57were created by men. And men tend to overlook the achievements and accomplishments of extraordinary women.
06:06But think about that. Think about who Jesus chose to be the very first preacher.
06:12It wasn't some perfect guy who had the right robes on and all the right words and demanded authority.
06:21It was a broken woman at a well who needed a hand up, not a hand out.
06:28And that's interesting. Jesus does pick people. And it's really, I look back and I think,
06:35wow, God always seems to pick the people that you would never expect.
06:40And we wouldn't expect this woman to be the first preacher, so we overlook that aspect of the story.
06:48But it's right there in front of your eyes, like so many other magical moments with Christ.
06:54And I love that story. And I love pointing out to people, hey, you may have missed this.
07:00And maybe you didn't.
07:02But you know what, for the person who just heard that for the very first time and just realized that
07:09God doesn't always pick the perfect people, and God doesn't always do things in the way that
07:16men tell us God does, because God doesn't need a man to use his hands to do this, that, and
07:24the other
07:24thing to forgive your sins. You can just go directly to God.
07:28And I think it's interesting, we always look to men for direction, for the way that God functions
07:35and works. I'm going to tell you right now, it's a mystery, and he works in amazing ways.
07:40I hope you get something out of that story, and when you hear it in the future,
07:45I hope you remember that that is Jesus.
07:48And remember that he does not need you to hide the truth from him.
07:52He already knows it.
07:54And he still wants you.
07:57That should bring peace to somebody today.
08:02Because maybe you've been carrying something that you don't know how to say out loud.
08:07Maybe you're embarrassed that you're still struggling.
08:12Maybe you keep thinking, I should be past this by now.
08:17Maybe you feel like you should be stronger, calmer, more faithful, or more certain.
08:23But Jesus is not standing over you with his arms crossed, disappointed that you're a human.
08:30He may have an amazing plan for you, an amazing title.
08:35He may have something for you that you'll be recorded for in history forever.
08:40And it wasn't because you were the perfect human.
08:43It was just because you were human.
08:48And because you're weak.
08:52And because sin breaks us.
08:54Grief shakes us.
08:56Fear wears us down.
08:57And life can become too heavy for human strength.
09:03That's why the invitation of Jesus matters so much.
09:07Sorry if I've been rambling a little bit here.
09:10I'm just so blown away by that story.
09:12And it kind of carries me off sometimes.
09:16But you know what?
09:17I want you to remember something.
09:19Jesus said, come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden.
09:26And I will give you rest.
09:28He didn't say, come to me when you're impressive.
09:31Or when you have enough followers on social media.
09:34He didn't say, come to me after you stop struggling.
09:38That's the point of Christ.
09:40He wants to help you stop struggling.
09:43He didn't say, come to me when your life looks clean enough for everybody else.
09:49He just said, come to me.
09:51And that's the invitation.
09:53No matter what you're going through.
09:54No matter who you are.
09:56No matter what you believe.
09:58No matter what your past is.
10:00It doesn't matter.
10:02You see, that's the lesson hidden inside the question, are you doing okay?
10:07Because maybe the question is just not about how your day is going.
10:12Maybe it's a doorway.
10:13Maybe it's a chance to finally stop pretending in the presence of the one who already knows.
10:20You can tell Jesus the truth.
10:23You can tell him, Lord, I am scared.
10:27You can tell him, I don't know what to do next.
10:30He hears that from me all the time.
10:33You can tell him, I'm angry and I don't want to be.
10:37I love you, but I am tired.
10:40I believe, but help my unbelief.
10:46That kind of prayer may not sound like some polished prayer from a book.
10:50But you know what?
10:52It's real.
10:53And real prayer reaches heaven.
10:57You know, it always makes me think about Peter.
11:00Peter loved Jesus, and there's no question about that.
11:04But Peter also failed.
11:06When the pressure came, when fear took over, when the moment got dangerous, Peter denied him three times.
11:15Now, can you imagine how Peter felt after that?
11:18I always think about that.
11:20Imagine being Peter and putting yourself in a situation like that.
11:25I mean, he had said he would never fall away.
11:28He had said he would die with Jesus.
11:31But he didn't say that to a crowd.
11:33He said that to Jesus himself.
11:37And then, when it mattered most, he broke.
11:42You know, I think a lot of us know what it feels like in our own way, don't we?
11:48We know what that feels like.
11:50Maybe not the same situation, but we know what it feels like to look back and think,
11:56Why did I do that?
11:59You know, we know what it feels like to disappoint ourselves.
12:02We know what it feels like to wonder if God is just tired of forgiving us, or if he even
12:10will.
12:11Sometimes the transgression is at the point where I did that knowing it was wrong.
12:16Will God still forgive me?
12:19You know what?
12:20After the resurrection, Jesus came to Peter on a beach.
12:31That's one of the most beautiful things about Jesus, I think.
12:35He tells the truth, but he does not use the truth to crush the person who is coming back to
12:42him.
12:43He uses the truth to heal.
12:45He uses grace to rebuild.
12:49And he takes people who think they are finished and shows them that failure does not get the final word
12:55when grace is still speaking.
12:58Think of the woman at the well.
13:01She thought her failures in life had turned her into somebody who had to show up hidden in the heat
13:08of the day just to get water.
13:10She couldn't show up with the women in the morning because of the ridicule and the looks, etc.
13:17But Christ?
13:19Christ said,
13:20Are you doing okay?
13:22And he was not asking because he thought she had the perfect answer.
13:27He was asking because maybe she needed to stop for a moment.
13:34You know, kind of like us.
13:36Maybe we need to stop.
13:38Maybe we just need to breathe.
13:40Maybe we need to let our souls catch up with our life.
13:45Maybe we get moving so fast.
13:47We handle so much and are trying to be strong for so many people that we have not been honest
13:54with God about this season and how it's affecting us.
13:59And I want to remind you that Jesus sees you.
14:03He sees the part of you that keeps going even when you're worn out.
14:08He sees the prayers you prayed when nobody else was in the room.
14:13He sees the tears you wiped away before anyone walked in.
14:19He sees the pressure you do not talk about.
14:23He sees the good you're trying to do, even when you feel like you're falling short.
14:30And he is not far away.
14:33That is the comfort of our faith.
14:36We do not serve a Savior who only understands pain from a distance.
14:43Because Jesus entered this world.
14:45He knew hunger.
14:47He knew rejection.
14:48He knew betrayal.
14:50He knew grief.
14:52He stood outside the tomb of Lazarus and wept.
14:56And that means your tears are not strange to him.
15:00Your heaviness is not a confusing aspect of you.
15:05Your weakness does not scare him away.
15:08So, maybe today, the most faithful thing you can do is not pretend you're okay.
15:14Maybe the most faithful thing you can do is come to Jesus honestly.
15:21Sit with him for a moment.
15:23Not with fancy words or with performance.
15:26Just the truth.
15:29Lord, I need you.
15:35And no, it doesn't mean every problem disappears the second you pray.
15:41Sometimes you still have to walk through the hard thing.
15:45Sometimes the answer takes time.
15:47And sometimes, God gives you strength for one day instead of showing you the whole road ahead.
15:57But one day with Jesus is still better than trying to survive alone.
16:04One step with Jesus is still enough for the next step.
16:09And one honest prayer can be the beginning of peace returning to your soul.
16:16So, let me ask you again gently.
16:20Are you doing okay?
16:22And before you rush past the question, I want you to take it seriously.
16:28Not so you can fall apart without hope, but so you can bring truth to the one who loves you.
16:51Jesus is not waiting for the perfect version of you.
16:55He's calling for the real version of you.
16:59And the real version of you is loved.
17:03The real version of you is seen.
17:07The real version of you can be restored.
17:11You may not be able to say everything in your life is okay right now.
17:16But because of Jesus, you can say this.
17:21I am not alone.
17:24He sees me.
17:26He is with me.
17:28And with him, I can keep going.
17:34My name is Douglas Vandegraaff, and I believe in Jesus Christ.
17:40God bless you, my friends.
17:42May God bless every single one of you.
17:49Bye-bye.
