00:00Should Christians celebrate Halloween?
00:03You know, every year as October comes around, something interesting happens.
00:09A holiday that many people associate with costumes, pumpkins, and candy
00:15becomes the center of a serious disagreement among Christians.
00:20Some believe participating in Halloween is perfectly harmless.
00:26Others believe it opens the door to things that have no place in a Christian life.
00:31And somewhere in the middle, there are people like you and me
00:35who simply want to do what's right in the eyes of God.
00:40I think that this is a conversation worth having
00:44because your faith should never require you to stop thinking.
00:48And your convictions should never require you to stop loving people.
00:55So today, I want to talk to you about Halloween without fear,
01:01without judgment, and without pretending there's an easy answer to every question.
01:08Let's begin with something important.
01:12The Bible never mentions Halloween by name.
01:15Jesus never gave a sermon about costumes, trick-or-treating, or decorating your front porch.
01:24That means we need to be careful about claiming that
01:28God has specifically commanded something He has not.
01:33But the absence of a direct command does not mean our choices don't matter.
01:39You know, Scripture gives us principles for making decisions.
01:43And those principles, well, they deserve our attention.
01:49For many families, Halloween is a wonderful opportunity to spend time together.
01:55Children experience the excitement of dressing up.
01:59Parents make memories with their kids and neighbors who might barely speak throughout the year
02:05suddenly have a reason to smile and greet one another.
02:10There is something genuinely beautiful about a neighborhood coming alive with laughter,
02:17generosity, and a sense of community.
02:21Think about the older neighbor who rarely receives visitors, but looks forward to handing out candy.
02:29Think about the parents walking alongside their children,
02:32enjoying an evening together without worrying about everything waiting for them tomorrow.
02:38I don't believe we should automatically dismiss those experiences
02:43simply because they happened on October 31st.
02:50But I understand there's another side to this conversation,
02:55and we need to be equally honest about it.
02:58Now, some Halloween celebrations place an enormous emphasis on violence, terror, cruelty,
03:06and disturbing spiritual imagery.
03:10Certain activities can go far beyond innocent costumes and childhood imagination.
03:17And for Christians who take their spiritual lives seriously,
03:22those things can raise legitimate concerns.
03:26Scripture repeatedly encourages us to be careful about what we allow to influence our hearts and our minds.
03:35The Apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians chapter 10 that
03:40even when something is permissible, that doesn't necessarily make it beneficial.
03:48Now, that's a distinction worth remembering, isn't it?
03:52Just because something is popular, doesn't mean it's good for you.
03:57And just because something is entertaining, doesn't mean you have to welcome it into your home.
04:03If a particular Halloween activity celebrates cruelty,
04:08encourages unhealthy fear, or involves spiritual practices that conflict with your relationship with God,
04:16you have every reason to walk away from it.
04:20You don't need to apologize for having boundaries.
04:24But I also want you to consider one thing.
04:28There is an important difference between a child dressing up as a firefighter
04:34and someone deliberately participating in the occult.
04:40You know, treating those two situations as though they are spiritually identical
04:45doesn't help us make thoughtful decisions.
04:49And this is where I believe Jesus Christ offers us something extraordinary.
04:55In the Gospel of Luke chapter 10,
04:58Jesus tells us the story of the Good Samaritan.
05:02A man had been attacked, robbed, and left wounded beside the road.
05:08Several people passed by without helping him.
05:11But a Samaritan stopped, cared for his wounds, and made arrangements for his recovery.
05:21Now, I think what makes this story so powerful is that
05:26Samaritans and Jews had deep religious and cultural disagreements at the time.
05:31Yet, Jesus made the Samaritan the example of someone who understood what it meant to love his neighbor.
05:41And at the end of the story, Jesus said something remarkably simple.
05:47Go and do likewise.
05:51Think about what that means for us.
05:54Jesus wasn't telling us to abandon our beliefs.
05:57He was showing us that our beliefs should produce compassion, mercy, and genuine love for other people.
06:07And I wonder how much better our conversations about Halloween would become if we remembered that lesson.
06:15Maybe you decide not to celebrate Halloween.
06:18That's perfectly reasonable, and you can choose that.
06:23Perhaps you've thought carefully about the spiritual concerns, talked with your family, prayed about your decision,
06:31and concluded that participation is not right for your home.
06:38You can make that decision without condemning your neighbor.
06:44You can still be friendly to the children walking down your street.
06:48You can still treat the families around you with kindness.
06:52You can still demonstrate the love of Christ without participating in a celebration that troubles your conscience.
07:01But perhaps you see Halloween differently.
07:06Maybe you enjoy decorating pumpkins and watching your children dress up or welcoming families to your doorstep.
07:13You have no interest in glorifying evil, and nothing about your participation involves practices that contradict your faith.
07:24I knew somebody one year who would put little pieces of paper with Bible verses into children's candy bags when
07:34they would come to the door.
07:36You can use this as an opportunity to share the gospel and the word of God.
07:40And it doesn't mean you're representing some sort of an evil practice on a specific day of the year.
07:48You know, I don't believe we can honestly say that every Christian who enjoys those traditions has somehow turned away
07:58from Jesus Christ.
07:59What matters is that we're willing to examine our intentions and our heart and the influence our choices have on
08:09our lives.
08:10Romans chapter 14 offers another important principle.
08:15Paul discusses differences of conscience among believers, including how people regard certain days.
08:24He wasn't specifically talking about Halloween, don't get me wrong.
08:29But his teaching reminds us not to despise or unfairly judge one another over matters where Christians may reach different
08:39conclusions.
08:40We're still brothers and sisters.
08:45Now, I'm not saying that that means every activity is acceptable.
08:50It means we should distinguish between clear biblical principles and personal convictions about how those principles apply.
09:01And I believe that distinction can save us from a tremendous amount of unnecessary conflict.
09:09You see, something happens when we become so determined to prove that we're right that we forget the person standing
09:17across from us.
09:19We can win an argument and still fail to demonstrate the love of Christ.
09:26Jesus told his followers in Matthew chapter 5 that they were the light of the world.
09:32He encouraged them to let their light shine so that others could see their good works and glorify their Father
09:40in heaven.
09:41I love that teaching because it reminds me that Christianity is about more than identifying the darkness around us.
09:50It's about bringing God's light into the way we live.
09:55And that light should be visible in our patience, in our generosity, our wisdom, and the way we treat people
10:05who disagree with us.
10:06So, when Halloween arrives, I personally would encourage you to make your decision thoughtfully.
10:15Consider what your family is actually participating in.
10:20Think about what your children are learning.
10:23Be honest about the difference between innocent enjoyment and activities that undermine the values you are trying to teach.
10:32And, most importantly, ask yourself whether your choices are helping you become the kind of person Jesus is calling you
10:42to be.
10:43Maybe your family celebrates with some boundaries.
10:48Maybe you choose a different kind of autumn gathering.
10:51Maybe you decide not to participate at all.
10:55Those decisions can be made with sincerity, wisdom, and love.
11:03Now, whenever you choose, please don't allow one evening on the calendar to become a reason to look down on
11:12somebody else.
11:13Your neighbor is still your neighbor on October 31st.
11:17You know, and that's important for us to remember.
11:21The command to love others doesn't disappear because you're uncomfortable with their decorations.
11:28And your responsibility to honor God doesn't disappear because everyone around you is having fun.
11:37You can have convictions without hostility.
11:41You can exercise freedom without abandoning discernment.
11:44And you can disagree with another Christian without questioning the sincerity of their relationship with Jesus.
11:54Ultimately, I don't believe the most important question is simply whether Christians should celebrate Halloween.
12:02I believe the more important question is whether we're allowing Jesus Christ to guide our decisions, our attitudes, and the
12:12love we extend to the people around us.
12:16Because long after the costumes are put away, the decorations come down, and the candy is gone, something far more
12:25important will remain.
12:39So, whatever October 31st looks like in your home, I hope it's filled with peace rather than fear, wisdom rather
12:50than pressure, and love rather than judgment.
12:54And I hope you'll remember that you don't have to compromise your faith to be kind.
13:00And you don't have to condemn somebody else to remain faithful.
13:06You simply have to keep following Jesus.
13:10Because the greatest life you can bring to any season isn't a decoration on your front porch.
13:17It's the love of Christ shining through your life.
13:23Now, this Halloween, my family will be celebrating.
13:27My kids dress up in harmless ways, and they like to go out into the neighborhood and see pumpkins and
13:35how people have carved them.
13:37And that doesn't make us any less Christian, and it doesn't take anything away from what we do with the
13:46other 364 days of our life.
13:50So, I'd encourage you to think this through.
13:55My name is Douglas Vandegraaff, and I believe in Jesus Christ.
14:02God bless every single one of you.
14:05Every single one.
14:07And everyone you love.
14:12Bye-bye.
