Spiritually numb is something many Christians go through quietly, especially when life has been heavy for a long time. You may still love God, but your emotions feel shut down. You may still want to pray, but the words do not come easily. You may still believe, but deep down you wonder why everything feels so distant.

In this message, Douglas Vandergraph offers steady Christian encouragement for the person who feels tired in their faith. This is not about guilt. It is about honesty. Spiritual numbness does not always mean rebellion. Sometimes it means your heart has been carrying fear, pressure, loss, loneliness, or disappointment without enough room to breathe.

God is not waiting for you to sound impressive. He receives the honest prayer of a tired heart. Come to Jesus with what you actually have today. Even if all you can say is, “Lord, help me,” that still matters.

00:01You know, I think people think I have some sort of a spiritual hotline where I can just
00:06call Jesus up directly.
00:08I mean, I've written more content than any solo creator in the history of mankind.
00:13I do these videos every single day, and I know a lot about the New Testament.
00:18A lot.
00:20But I don't know everything.
00:22But people, I believe, think that maybe I never know what it's like to not feel God.
00:30And that's not true.
00:31There are many days when I sit down and attempt to write a script so I can sit here and
00:37discuss
00:37topics with you, and I just don't feel God anymore.
00:43And sometimes the hardest place to be is not where you stop believing in God.
00:49It's where you still believe, really believe, but you can't feel much of anything anymore.
00:57You know, you pray, but the words feel flat.
01:01You read a verse, but it does not hit your heart the way it used to.
01:06You still know God is real, but something inside you feels tired, distant, and hard to reach.
01:14And that can scare a person.
01:16It scares the heck out of me.
01:18Because when your heart feels numb, you start to ask questions that you normally wouldn't say aloud.
01:26You know, things like, am I drifting from God?
01:30Did I do something wrong?
01:32Is my faith getting weak?
01:35Why do other people seem moved by God while I'm just sitting here trying to feel something again?
01:44And I want to speak to that person today with a lot of care.
01:50Spiritual numbness does not always mean that you've lost your faith.
01:55Sometimes it means you've been carrying more than your soul knows how to process.
01:59And sometimes, you're not cold toward God.
02:04You are worn down.
02:06And there's a difference.
02:08You see, life can press on a person for so long that the heart starts protecting itself.
02:15After enough stress, disappointment, fear, grief, waiting, and unanswered questions,
02:22you may stop feeling deeply because feeling deeply has become exhausting.
02:27And that does not make you fake.
02:31That makes you human.
02:34There are reasons and seasons when prayer feels close and alive.
02:40There are also reasons and seasons when prayer feels like sitting in silence with nothing impressive to say.
02:48I call that writer's block, but I know that's not what it is.
02:55It's, I guess the best way to say it is, this is something I want you to hold on to.
03:01And I say this often.
03:03God is not only near when you feel him.
03:07A quiet heart is not an abandoned heart.
03:12God is always with you.
03:14And that matters because many people confuse the feeling of God's presence with the fact of God's presence.
03:22You see, feelings are real, but they are not always reliable, and they are not prophecy.
03:30Some days, your emotions tell the truth clearly.
03:33Other days, they're crowded by pressure, lack of sleep, pain, anxiety, and just plain weariness.
03:42God does not become less faithful because your emotions are tired.
03:47Think about how gentle Jesus was with hurting people.
03:52He did not crush the weak.
03:55He did not shame the exhausted.
03:58He did not stand at a distance from people who were barely holding themselves together.
04:04He moved toward them.
04:06He saw them.
04:08He spoke to them with truth.
04:11But he also treated their pain like it mattered.
04:15And that's the Jesus that you're coming to when you have these feelings of numbness, when you think that God
04:22is absent.
04:24Because at that point in time, you're not coming to someone who is annoyed that you cannot perform spiritually or
04:32that you cannot feel God.
04:34God is not annoyed with you if you cannot feel him.
04:38You bring those feelings to the one who already knows what is going on under the surface.
04:44He knows the prayers you could not finish.
04:47He knows the tears that never came.
04:50He knows the heaviness you have not explained to anyone.
04:55So, maybe the first step is not forcing yourself to see something big.
05:02Maybe the first step is just being honest with God right where you are.
05:07You can say, Lord, I still believe, but I feel far away.
05:14I want to want you more.
05:18I want my heart to wake up again.
05:21Please meet me here.
05:23You know what?
05:25That kind of prayer may not sound powerful to you, but I believe heaven hears it clearly.
05:33God is not impressed by polished words that hide the truth.
05:37He receives honest words from a tired heart.
05:42Even when the prayer is small, it is still movement toward him.
05:47You know, when I think about this, and as I was bringing this all together to have this conversation with
05:55you today,
05:56I thought about Elijah after one of the greatest victories of his life.
06:02Remember, he was exhausted, afraid, and ready to give up laying under that tree.
06:09God did not start by giving him a long speech.
06:14God gave him rest.
06:16God gave him food.
06:19God let him sleep.
06:22And then God met him in a quiet whisper.
06:25And that says something about the heart of God.
06:28Because sometimes what you call spiritual failure may actually be deep exhaustion.
06:35You may just need prayer, but you may also just need rest.
06:40You may need scripture, but you may also need to stop pretending that you're fine.
06:48You may need to return to God, but not with panic.
06:52You may need to return just like a child who is tired and needs to be held.
07:00I want you to stop beating yourself up because your faith does not feel alive every moment of every day.
07:07Faith is not only a feeling.
07:10It's not a rock band playing on a stage with somebody preaching the word of the Lord.
07:16Faith is not just a feeling.
07:19It's the decision to keep turning your face toward God when your feelings have actually gone quiet.
07:28It's opening your hands even when your heart feels empty.
07:31It is whispering, Jesus, I am still here.
07:38And trusting that he is still here as well.
07:42You see, there is a simple line in Psalms that says,
07:46Be still and know that I am God.
07:50It does not say be impressive.
07:52It does not say be emotionally strong or be perfectly inspired every time you pray.
07:59It says to be still.
08:02Because sometimes stillness is all you have.
08:06And sometimes stillness is where God begins to steady you again.
08:12Now, you may not feel a sudden rush of peace today.
08:17You may not feel completely restored by the end of this video.
08:21I do not want to promise something cheap.
08:24But I do believe numbness is not the end of your story with God.
08:32A numb season can become a healing season when you stop hiding from him and start bringing him the truth.
08:44So, take a little pressure off your soul today, okay?
08:47Do yourself a favor.
08:49You don't have to manufacture emotion for God to love you.
08:53You don't have to prove that you're still sincere by feeling everything deeply.
08:59You can just come to him with whatever strength you have.
09:04And I guarantee you, he will not turn you away.
09:10And maybe today your prayer is not long.
09:13Maybe it's something like,
09:15Jesus, help me come back to life inside.
09:19Now, that is enough for today.
09:22Stay close in the small ways.
09:25Keep showing up.
09:27Let worship play softly.
09:29Read one passage without forcing a reaction.
09:33Sit with God in the quiet.
09:35Or talk to him like he is actually with you.
09:38Because you know what?
09:40He is.
09:42And when the numbness tries to tell you that nothing is happening,
09:45remember that some of God's deepest work starts below the place you can feel.
09:52Roots grow underground before you ever see fruit.
09:56Healing often begins quietly before strength returns.
10:01God can be working in you even when you do not feel the movement yet.
10:07So, don't call yourself hopeless.
10:11Don't call yourself lost because you're tired.
10:15Bring the numbness to Jesus.
10:18Bring the silence.
10:20Bring the fear that something is wrong with you.
10:23He is gentle enough to handle it.
10:27Strong enough to carry it.
10:29And faithful enough to stay with you until your heart begins to breathe again.
10:36So, if this is where you are right now,
10:39I'd love for you to leave a comment and just say,
10:43I'm still here.
10:44Not for attention and not for pressure.
10:48Just as a small act of honesty before God.
10:52And if this message met you in a real place today,
10:56stay connected with me.
