Why Do We Suffer? Desiring and Not Desiring

Why is suffering such a universal part of human life? In this video, Pulkit Sharma, Clinical Psychologist, Psychoanalytic Therapist, Spiritual Counselor & Author, explores a simple yet profound idea: much of our suffering comes from not getting what we want — and getting what we never wanted.

Throughout life, we create inner fantasies about how our career, health, family and future should be. When reality doesn't match these expectations, suffering begins. At the center of this struggle is the “I” — I want this. I don't want that. I am not getting what I want.

Understanding this movement of the mind can help us look more deeply into the roots of our suffering — and perhaps discover a different way of relating to life.

This is an excerpt from a talk given by Pulkit Sharma in 2017 — and its message remains remarkably relevant even today.
