00:00Brendan PlayerUnknownGreen reduces studio size amid funding challenges.
00:05Brendan PlayerUnknownGreen has revealed that his independent studio, PlayerUnknown Productions,
00:10is scaling back its workforce after facing difficulty securing additional financial support.
00:16In a lengthy message shared on social media, the creator of PUBG explained that reducing
00:21the size of the team was a difficult but necessary step as the studio works to keep development
00:27moving forward.
00:27Green acknowledged that he had personally funded operations for as long as possible,
00:32noting that many independent developers are not in a position to do the same.
00:37According to Green, the broader games industry continues to face economic challenges, making
00:41it increasingly difficult for studios to attract investment or publishing partners.
00:46As a result, PlayerUnknown Productions will continue its work with a leaner staff while
00:51seeking outside support for its future projects.
00:54Despite the downsizing, Green praised the employees affected by the decision, expressing gratitude
01:00for their professionalism and dedication throughout a challenging period.
01:05He also highlighted the positive studio culture the team had built together and said he was
01:10proud of everything they accomplished, even though the original journey could not be completed
01:14as planned.
01:15Green encouraged players to experience Prologue Go Way Back, which has now been made available
01:21for free, and thanked the community for its ongoing enthusiasm and creativity.
01:25He said he hopes fans continue to enjoy exploring the game's world while the studio charts its
01:31next steps.
01:32The announcement prompted mixed reactions from the gaming community.
01:36Some expressed surprise that a developer widely credited with helping popularize the battle
01:43royale genre is encountering funding difficulties, while others debated Green's role in more recent
01:49projects and the technologies used during development.
01:52The situation underscores the financial pressures facing many independent studios, even those led by
01:58developers with major commercial successes in their past.
02:05So, that's, yeah, so, I mean, it shouldn't, there's no company, there's no, I don't care if, how, how much
02:14success
02:14you've had in the past, there's no company that's too big to fail.
02:19So, I am surprised that the studio that created PUBG is having difficulties, but we've been hearing
02:27about studio closures and studio reductions for years.
02:34Back when me and Dr. Games 101 were doing the Let's Discuss Gaming podcast.
02:38So, um, together, so, you know, um, it's, it's not really, it's not really, uh, surprising that
02:51the studio is facing trouble, um, a lot of studios have been.
02:57Um, and just because you can hit it big with, uh, Fortnite or PUBG or what's the other one, um,
03:08Minecraft, you know, just because you hit it big, if you create one of those, does, that doesn't mean
03:13that you're set forever.
03:14Heck, I think, uh, even, uh, the studio that created Fortnite was laying people off, um, due to,
03:21uh, many people, many players not logging back into their game in 2025 and 2026.
03:30So, yeah, um, unfortunately, um, if you're not growing, you're dying.
03:39Um, and, uh, that's true with really almost any business.
03:44So, yeah, it sucks that someone that's created something as great as PUBG, um, it's, you know,
03:52it was, that's great what he created, but you can't rest on that forever.
03:57As far as the funding, I wonder, I wonder what he was trying to get funding for.
04:02Like, what was the project that he couldn't get funding for?
04:05Was this related?
04:07I think this was related to a different game, um, that we discussed not too long ago, if
04:13I'm, if I'm not mistaking, uh, where he was footing the bill and he just couldn't foot it
04:18anymore.
04:18Uh, and, unfortunately, they couldn't find someone, and I guess, you know, they tried
04:26to find someone that would, uh, pay, they, they needed, like, six figures to continue this
04:32game, development of this game, and many studios, but, like I said, the studio that did PUBG,
04:40but the name does sound familiar, that's why I'm, that's why, um, it made me remember
04:47it, but you would think, if they created PUBG, they would have a big, they would have a good
04:55enough reputation to get funding, uh, but what do you think?
