Jagex has officially cancelled RuneScape Reignited just two weeks after announcing the project at RuneFest 2026! But what went wrong, and why were so many veteran players concerned about this fresh-start experience?
The project promised a new economy, reset world-first achievements, and dedicated worlds designed to give players a fresh beginning in the 25-year-old MMORPG. However, some members of the community argued that Jagex should focus on improving the existing game rather than creating a separate experience for new and returning players.
Following the community backlash, Jagex admitted that it had missed the mark and confirmed that Reignited would not move forward.
In this video, we look at what RuneScape Reignited was supposed to be, why the community pushed back, and what this cancellation could mean for the future of RuneScape.
Do you think Jagex made the right decision, or should RuneScape Reignited have been given a chance? Let me know in the comments!

00:00Imagine announcing a new version of a beloved MMORPG, promising players the chance to start
00:06fresh, rebuild their characters, and experience a new beginning in a game that's been around for
00:1125 years. Now imagine cancelling that very project just two weeks later because the people you wanted
00:17to attract weren't convinced it was what the game needed. Well that's essentially what happened
00:22with RuneScape Reignited, a project that was supposed to give the long-running MMORPG a fresh
00:28start but ended up being cancelled following significant community criticism. Jagex, the
00:33company behind RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, and RuneScape Dragonwilds has officially pulled the
00:38plug on the project. And while the headline may make it sound like veteran players simply destroyed
00:43a new game before it even had a chance to get started, there's a bigger story here about what
00:47happens when developers try to attract new players without fully addressing the concerns of the people
00:53who have kept the game alive for decades. So what exactly was RuneScape Reignited, why did it generate
01:00such a negative reaction from some long-time players, and what does its cancellation tell us about the
01:05challenges of keeping an aging MMO alive? Let's get into it. To understand why this announcement
01:12caused such a reaction, we first need to look at what Jagex was actually trying to accomplish.
01:17RuneScape Reignited was announced earlier this month at RuneFest 2026, a community event celebrating
01:23everything related to the RuneScape franchise. The idea was to give players a fresh version of the
01:2825-year-old MMORPG, essentially allowing them to start over in a new environment designed specifically
01:35for Reignited accounts. And this wasn't simply a new server where everybody would create a character
01:41and begin grinding again. The concept included a completely new economy, reset world-first
01:46achievements, and bespoke worlds specifically crafted for Reignited players. Think about what
01:52that means for a moment. In a game that's been around for a quarter of a century, the economy
01:57has been shaped by years of player activity. Veteran players have accumulated wealth, developed
02:02their accounts, mastered the game systems, and participated in a world that has changed considerably
02:07since its early days. Reignited was intended to give players an opportunity to experience
02:12a fresh start without necessarily abandoning the broader RuneScape community. And here's
02:18where the idea gets interesting. Reignited players would still exist in the same world as veteran
02:24players. They could chat with them, form guilds, and even share player housing. However, they
02:29wouldn't be able to trade with veteran players or team up with them to defeat bosses. In other words,
02:34Jagex wanted to preserve some of the social connections that make an MMO an MMO while preventing
02:39the established economy and progression of veteran players from undermining the new experience.
02:45On paper, you can understand the appeal. A new player could enter a world where everyone was
02:50starting from a similar position with the opportunity to establish themselves without immediately feeling
02:55overshadowed by players who had been playing for years. For returning players who hadn't touched
03:00RuneScape in a long time, it might have also been an opportunity to rediscover the game without feeling
03:05hopelessly behind. But there was a problem. Not everyone believed that starting over was what
03:12RuneScape actually needed, and that brings us to the backlash. When Jagex announced Reignited,
03:17the response wasn't universally negative. Some lapsed players and long-time veterans were excited
03:23by the possibility of experiencing RuneScape from a fresh starting point. But other members of the
03:28community had serious concerns about the direction Jagex was taking. One of the biggest criticisms
03:34was that Reignited appeared to prioritize attracting new and returning players at the expense of the
03:40existing community. And honestly, that's an important concern for a game like RuneScape.
03:46This isn't a brand new MMO launching into an already crowded market. It's a game with a long history,
03:52an established player base, and players who have invested enormous amounts of time into their accounts.
03:57For those players, their characters aren't simply collections of statistics. Their progress represents
04:03years of grinding, completing quests, accumulating wealth, unlocking achievements, and building
04:09relationships with other people in the game. So when a developer proposes a fresh start experience,
04:14it's understandable that some veterans might ask a pretty straightforward question.
04:19Why is the company investing in a new way to experience the game instead of fixing the problems
04:24that are already there? That was the heart of the criticism.
04:28Some players felt that addressing existing issues would be a more effective way to attract and
04:34retain players than creating a separate progression experience. After all, a new player might be
04:39excited to start from scratch. But what happens when they encounter the same frustrations that caused
04:44other players to leave in the first place? A fresh economy doesn't automatically fix problems with the
04:49game's underlying systems. Resetting achievements doesn't necessarily make the overall experience
04:54more engaging. And giving players a new starting point doesn't guarantee they'll stick around once
04:59the novelty wears off. That's the distinction here. There's a difference between making a game more
05:04appealing to new players and making the game itself better. Ideally, a developer should be working
05:10towards both goals. And for some members of the RuneScape community, Reignited felt like an attempt to address the
05:17first goal without doing enough to reassure them about the second.
05:22Jagex announced that players had raised a variety of perspectives, including concerns about the project's
05:27direction. And those concerns ultimately contributed to the decision to cancel it. But does that mean the veteran
05:32players were wrong to oppose the project? Not necessarily. And it doesn't automatically mean the original idea was
05:39bad either. It means Jagex proposed a solution to a problem and a significant portion of the community questioned
05:45whether that solution addressed the problems that mattered most. The controversy didn't drag on for months.
05:51Jagex ultimately announced that RuneScape Reignited would not be moving forward. In the cancellation announcement,
05:57Mod Ryan admitted that the team had missed the mark. And his wording was pretty direct. He said,
06:02It is clear that we missed a mark on this, and so we are not moving forward with it. That's
06:08a significant
06:08admission. Rather than continuing to defend the proposal or attempting to push it forward despite
06:13the criticism, Jagex decided to abandon the project. Mod Ryan also explained that the company wanted to
06:20see RuneScape grow again, bringing back returning players and attracting newcomers, but not at the expense
06:26of its existing community. Our goal is to see RuneScape grow again, with returning players coming
06:31back and new players joining, but never at the expense of our existing community.
06:37That last part is particularly important. Jagex wasn't saying that attracting new players was a bad
06:43idea. It was announcing that the game should remain exactly as it was forever. Instead, the company was
06:49acknowledging that growth shouldn't come at the cost of alienating the people who already invested in the
06:54game. And that's a reasonable principle for any long-running live service title. However, we should be careful
07:00about one thing. Although the announcement came after community criticism, we shouldn't assume that every
07:06veteran player opposed Reignited, or that the entire community agreed on what should happen next. The feedback
07:12was varied, and Jagex itself acknowledged it had received different perspectives. What we can say is that the
07:18response was significant enough for the company to reconsider the project and ultimately cancel it. And that
07:24leaves us with a much bigger question. Was canceling Reignited the right move?
07:29Personally, I think the situation highlights a problem that developers of older online games need
07:34to take seriously. When a game has been around for 25 years, attracting new players can be difficult.
07:39There are years of content to explore, complicated systems to learn, established economies to understand,
07:46and veteran players who may have accumulated more experience than a newcomer could reasonably
07:50expect to match anytime soon. A fresh start environment can help reduce some of those barriers.
07:56So I don't think the basic concept behind Reignited was automatically a bad one. In fact,
08:01there are understandable reasons why someone might want to experience RuneScape without feeling like
08:06they're arriving decades late to the party. But the execution matters. If players believe the
08:11developer is creating a new experience because it would rather avoid dealing with existing problems,
08:16even a well-intentioned proposal can generate resentment. And that's where Jagex needed to make
08:22its case. Why was a separate progression environment the right answer? How would it help returning players
08:27stick around? What would happen to the main game while resources were devoted to the new project? And how
08:33would the company demonstrate that the needs of its existing community remained a priority? Those are fair
08:39questions and they deserve more than an assumption that a fresh start will solve everything. At the same time,
08:45I wouldn't necessarily call Reignited a failure simply because it was cancelled. The project never
08:50got the chance to establish itself as a full experience, so we can't honestly say whether it
08:55would have succeeded or failed with players after launch. What we can evaluate is the proposal,
09:00the reaction it received, and Jagex's response. And in this case, the company appears to have
09:07recognized that the concept wasn't winning over enough of the community to justify moving forward with it.
09:12That brings us to the title of this video. Did veteran players kill the new runescape in just two
09:18weeks? In a sense, the community backlash helped bring the project to an end, but I think it's more
09:23accurate to say that the proposal failed to convince enough people that it was the right direction for
09:27the game. Players didn't cancel a successful new MMO after launch. They challenged a project that only
09:34recently been announced, and Jagex made the decision to listen to that criticism rather than proceed.
09:39There's a big difference. Now that Reignited has been cancelled, the next question is,
09:45what Jagex does from here? The company has made it clear that still wants to attract new players
09:50and bring back people who have left the game. That goal hasn't disappeared just because the particular
09:54project is no longer happening, but the challenge is figuring out how to achieve it without making
09:59existing players feel as though their concerns are being ignored. One possible lesson from this
10:05situation is that developers need to involve their communities early and explain the problems
10:09they're trying to solve before committing too heavily to a particular solution. Another is that
10:14improving the experience for existing players can also help newcomers. Better onboarding, clearer
10:20explanation of game systems, compelling content, and a satisfying progressive experience can all make
10:26a game more inviting without necessarily requiring a separate version of it. Of course,
10:31those are potential directions rather than confirm plans from Jagex.
10:35We shouldn't assume the company will pursue any specific alternative until it actually announces
10:40one. And there is another important point here. Veteran players are not automatically right about
10:46every decision. Sometimes developers need to make changes that established communities initially
10:51dislike. A game cannot grow if every proposed change is rejected simply because it alters a familiar
10:57experience. But developers also shouldn't dismiss long-time players as an obstacle to growth.
11:02The people who have spent years supporting a game can provide valuable insight into what makes it
11:07special, where it falls short, and what might encourage them to keep playing. The trick is finding a
11:12balance. Jagex now has an opportunity to take the feedback from Reignited and use it to guide whatever
11:18comes next. Whether that means improvements to the existing game, a different approach to attracting new
11:24players, or something else entirely remains to be seen. But one thing is clear. Announcing a new
11:30beginning isn't enough if the people who care most about the game doesn't believe it's the right
11:34beginning. But now I want to hear from you. Do you think Jagex made the right decision by canceling
11:40RuneScape Reignited, or do you think the company should have given the project a chance? Would you have
11:45been interested in starting fresh in a new RuneScape environment, or would you rather see Jagex focus on
11:50improving the existing game first? And do you think the veteran players were justified in their
11:55criticism, or did the community react too negatively to an idea that might have worked?
