Five people have been arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi after a viral video allegedly showed a group cooking chicken and consuming alcohol aboard a boat on the River Ganga near Dashashwamedh Ghat.

According to police, the video circulated widely on social media, triggering outrage and prompting authorities to identify and detain those seen in the footage. The boat allegedly used during the gathering has also been seized.

The accused have been identified as Deepak Kumar, Ajay Sahani, Arun Kumar Sahani, Anurag Nishad and Rahul Sahani, all linked to the Ramnagar area of Varanasi.

Police said a case has been registered under relevant provisions of the BNS, and further legal proceedings are underway. Officials noted that the clip appears to be an old video, as the individuals seen in it were reportedly wearing winter clothing.

Authorities have urged boat operators and visitors to avoid activities that may hurt public sentiments, warning that strict action will be taken against violations.
