00:23Let us pray
00:26Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who from the cross looked in upon your mother, overwhelmed with
00:34grief and tears, and so truly took compassion on her sorrow, commending her to the care of your disciple John,
00:42as also you commended John, and in him, all of us, to her maternal care.
00:50Grant me to love and honour your mother with the purest and most ardent love, that I may have her
00:57for my mother and be worthily acknowledged by her as her son.
01:02Grant that in every necessity, and especially at the hour of my death, I may find her ever present and
01:09at hand to help me.
01:13Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who with your wounds gaping and your head crowned with thorns,
01:20while hanging in misery upon the cross, declared that you were without any consolation.
01:29Grant that in all adversity and times of temptation and desolation, I may fly with faith to you, my most
01:37holy Father, and putting no confidence in myself, grant that I may place all my hopes in you alone, and
01:44entirely resign myself and trust in you.
01:48Wound my innermost soul with the remembrance of your wounds, write and imprint them upon my heart, satiate me wholly
01:57with your blood, that all my intentions may be fixed in you alone, and that I may seek and find
02:03and hold you fast, possessing you for ever and ever.
02:09Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when your body was exhausted from the loss of blood,
02:16gasped for breath, and cried out on the cross that you were tormented with thirst, while you burnt with unspeakable
02:23desire for our salvation.
02:27Give me grace to thirst most ardently after your honour, and the salvation of souls, and be ready cheerfully to
02:35spend myself for them, according to your will.
02:40Grant that no love of any transitory object may possess my soul, that I may never attach myself to any
02:47creature, and that even when I am bound to love, I may love only in you.
02:53But give me grace to love you above all, and with my whole soul, and quietly to rest in you.
03:02Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when you were thirsty, even at the point of death,
03:09permitted a sponge filled with vinegar to be offered to you, and that by tasting of this, you might make
03:16satisfaction for our gluttony, giving us an example of poverty.
03:22Grant me the grace to despise any unlawful pleasure and delight, and to avoid any excess in eating and drinking,
03:29and may I use with moderation and thanksgiving whatever you do give me for the support of my poor body.
03:38So cleanse, I beg you, that it may relish nothing except that which is pleasing to you, and may find
03:46nothing but bitterness in whatever displeases you.
03:51Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, you, the greatest lover of the human race, who, when you
03:58were bringing out the work of our redemption to a close, brought yourself as a holy victim upon the altar
04:05of the cross for the sin of all mankind.
04:09May this be the only end, I beg you, of all my thoughts, words and works, namely, to seek your
04:17honour with an upright and sincere heart, and to desire nothing save you alone.
04:24Grant that I may never grow weary or lukewarm in your service, but a fervent spirit always be ever renewed
04:31within me, that I may daily more be more and more inflamed to love and praise you.
04:59You are dead, my beloved one, that I may live forever.
05:06What hope, what confidence is laid up for me in your death and in your blood.
05:11I glorify you, I give you thanks as far as in me lies.
05:15Give me grace to die entirely, to sin and all evil desires, and to live to you alone.
05:23May I think of you alone, may my understanding exercise itself in nothing except you,
05:30that, clad in your grace and with holy charity, I may soon after the close of this life come to
05:37you, the true paradise.
05:39O good Jesus, by your bitter passion and death, grant to me the living pardon and grace, and to the
05:46faithful departed rest and everlasting light.
05:50Praise honour and glory be to you, O Christ, at whose death the sun withdrew its light,
05:57and the veil of the temple was divided in two, and the earth quaked, and the rocks were cut, and
06:04the graves opened.
06:07May the rays of your grace never leave me, I beg you, you son of righteousness,
06:14you that are my God, may they always lighten even the very inmost recesses of my heart,
06:21that I may joyfully serve you for ever.
06:25Tear away from me the veil of hypocrisy,
06:28make the ground of my soul quake with saving penitence,
06:32rend in tomb this heart of stone of mine,
06:36that, being wholly renewed within,
06:38I may despise anything perishable,
06:41and love only the things that are of heaven.
06:45Amen.
06:49O Lord, open our lips,
06:52and our mouths shall sing your praise.
07:01O be joyful in the Lord,
07:06O be joyful in the Lord,
07:07O be joyful in the Lord,
07:08Turn the Lord with gladness,
07:12And come before His prayers and triggers on.
07:19He is sure that the Lord,
07:22He is God,
07:24He is the seed that has made us that most we ourselves,
07:30We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.
07:37O Lord, obey Him to His days with fasting,
07:43And in truly His constant praise,
07:48Be thankful unto Him and speak to the Lord of His name.
07:56For the Lord is gracious,
08:01His mercy is everlasting,
08:07And His truth and joy from generation to generation.
08:20Glory be to the Father,
08:24Glory be to the Father,
08:25And to the Father,
08:27And to the Father,
08:30And to the Holy Ghost,
08:31As it was in the beginning,
08:34Is now and ever shall be,
08:40World without end.
08:59O sing unto the Lord,
09:03O sing unto the Lord,
09:03A new song,
09:05Sing unto the Lord,
09:08O sing unto the Lord,
09:11Sing unto the Lord,
09:14And praise His name,
09:16Be telling of His salvation from day to day.
09:21If there is honor unto the Lord,
09:27And His honor unto the Lord,
09:31And His honor unto the Lord,
09:32For the Lord is great,
09:35And cannot worthy be praised,
09:39He is more to be praised,
09:43He is more to be praised than all the Lord,
09:45As for the Lord of the Heal,
09:48They are but idols,
09:52But it is the Lord that made the end.
09:57Glory and worship are before Him,
10:02Now and now and all in His sanctuary.
10:07Pharisees.
10:09Ascribe unto the Lord,
10:11O ye kinder of the people,
10:14Ascribe unto the Lord,
10:17What worship and care.
10:20Wascribe unto the Lord,
10:23The honor to His glory,
10:27Bring presence and covenant to His throne.
10:32Worship the Lord in the beauty,

16:09as we are one I in them and you in me but they may be completely one so that the
16:18world will know that you sent me and that you have loved them just as you
16:22have loved me father I want those you were given me to be with me where I am
16:30so that they may see my glory that you gave me because you loved me before the
16:35creation of the world righteous father even if the world does not know you I
16:42know you are these men know that you have sent me I made known your name to
16:48them and I will continue to make it known so that the love you have loved me with
16:54may be in them and I may be in them this is the word of the Lord thanks be to
17:05God
17:10this prayer of Christ is in some ways the most precious relic of the past we have
17:19here the words which Christ addressed to God in the critical hour of his life the
17:25words in which he uttered the deepest feelings and thoughts of his spirit
17:29clarified concentrated by the prospect of his death what it revelation it would
17:37be to us had we Christ's prayers from his boywood onwards what a litigy and prompt
17:44of devotion if we knew what he had desired from his earliest of years what he had
17:50feared what he had prayed against what he had never ceased to hope for the things
17:57that one by one dropped out of his prayers the things that gradually grew into
18:03them the persons he commended to the father and the manner of his commendation his
18:10prayers for his mother for John for Peter for Lazarus and even for Judas but here we
18:20have a prayer which if it does not do so abundantly satisfiably part in curiosity so
18:29at least it brings us a sacred a presence for even among the prayers of Christ this
18:35sounds by itself as that in which he gathered up the retrospect of all this
18:40past and surveyed the future of his church in which as if already dying he
18:48solemnly presented to the Father himself his work his people
18:56recognizing the grandeur of the occasion we may be disposed to agree that Melancholyon who when
19:05giving his last lecture shortly before his death said there is no voice which has ever been heard
19:11either in heaven or in death more exalted more holy more fruitful more
19:17sublime that this prayer offered up by the Son of God himself
19:28the prayer was the natural conclusion to the conversation which Jesus had
19:33his disciples had engaged for the previous chapters and as the eleven saw him
19:42lifting his eyes to heaven as if the Father he addressed were visible they no
19:48doubt felt a security which had not been imparted by all his promises and when
19:56after they spoke of Christ's intercession this instance of it must always have
20:02risen in its memory and been formed in all their ideas of that part of the
20:07Redeemer's work it has always been believed that those who have loved and
20:13cared for us while on earth continue to do so when through death they have passed
20:19nearer to the source of love and goodness this lively interest in us is supposed to
20:26continue because it formed so material and element in their life here below it was
20:35impossible that those who heard our Lord this awfully commending them to the Father
20:39should ever forget this earnest consideration of their sleep nor ever
20:46come to fancy that they were forgotten beginning with prayer for himself our Lord
20:53passes at the sixth verse into prayer for his disciples and by the 20th verse the
21:00prayer expands still further more widely embraces the world all those who will come
21:07to believe in him later first though Jesus prayed for himself at his prayer father
21:17glorify your son glorify me with your own self with the glory which I had with you before the world
21:24was
21:27the work for which he came into the world was done I have finished the work which you gave me
21:33to do
21:35there remains no more reason why he should stay longer on earth the hour is come the hour for closing
21:44his
21:44earthly career and opening to him a new period and sphere he neither wishes nor needs a
21:53prolongation of his life he has found time enough in less than half of three score years and ten to
22:02do
22:03all he can on earth it is character not time that we need to do our work to make a
22:11deep and abiding
22:12impression it is not longer life we need but intensity Jesus did not find himself cramped or limited or too
22:21soon hurried out of life he viewed death as the suitable timely step and took it with self-command and
22:31in order to pass to
22:32something better than his earthly life how immeasurably beneath this level is the vaunted
22:41equanimity of the thinker who says death can be no evil because it is universal how immeasurably beneath it
22:57is the habit of most of us which of us can stand in that clear air on that high point
23:04which separates
23:05life from what is to come and say i have finished the work you gave me to do
23:12a broken column is the fit monument for our life unfinished frustrated and useless wasted energy
23:21ill-repaired blunders unfulfilled purpose fruitless years much that is positively evil much that was done
23:30mechanically and carelessly and for the day plans ill-conceived and even worse executed imperfect ideals of life
23:42imperfectly imperfectly realized pursuits dictated by uneducated tastes unchaste whims accidental
23:52circumstances such is the retrospect which most of us have as we look back over life
24:01very few men even recognize the reality of life as part of an eternal order and of the few who
24:10do so still
24:12few seriously and persistently aim at fitting in their life as a solid part of that order
24:22before we know whether we have finished the work given to us we must know what the work is in
24:27the
24:27first place at the outset of his account of christ's work john gives us his concept of it
24:35the word was made flesh and brought among us and we beheld the glory the glory as of the only
24:42begotten of the father
24:45this work was now accomplished and jesus went on to say i have glorified you on the earth
24:54i have manifested your name to the men you gave me out of the world
25:02we may all add our humble and responsive amen to this account of his finished work
25:10john has carried us through scenes in which jesus manifested the glory of the father and showed the
25:18full meaning of that name displaying the father's love in his self-sacrificing interest in men
25:25the father's holiness and supremacy in his devoted filial obedience
25:32never again can then separate the idea of the true god from the life of jesus christ
25:39it is in that life we come to know god through that life that our that we find his glory
25:48shining
25:50this many a man has felt is the true divine glory this god yearning over his lost and wretched children
26:01coming down and sharing in their wretchedness to win them to himself and blessedness this is the god for us
26:10this alone is the glory as we bow before and down to be infinitely worthy of trust and adoration
26:19almightyness supplying itself to the necessities and fears of the weak perfect purity winning to itself
26:29the impure and the outcast love showing itself to be divine by its patience humility and its absolute
26:37sacrifice it is christ who has found entrance for those concepts of god once for all in the human
26:46mind it is to christ we owe it that we know a god at all that we can entirely love
26:53and increasingly
26:54worship with the most assured truth he could say i have finished the work you gave me i have glorified
27:03you
27:03on the earth i have shown your name to the men you gave me out of the world
27:11but christ recognizes a work which ran parallel to this a work which continually resulted from his
27:19manifestation of the father by this by showing the father he gave eternal life to those who accepted and
27:29believed this revelation the power to reveal the father which christ had received he had not
27:37on his own account but that he might give eternal life to men for this is life eternal that he
27:46they all of us
27:48might know you the only true god and jesus christ whom you have sent
27:57eternal life is not merely life indefinitely prolonged it is rather life under new conditions and fed from
28:05different sources it can be entered upon now but a full understanding of it is now impossible
28:14the corrupt might as well try to understand the life of the butterfly or the chick in the shell the
28:21life
28:22of the bird to know what christ revealed this is the birth to life eternal to know that love and
28:33holiness
28:33are this governing power in conformity with all things are carried forward to their end to know what god is
28:41that he is a father who cannot leave us his children on earth behind and pass on to his own
28:49great works
28:50and purposes in the rest of the universe but he stoops to our littleness and delays that he might carry
28:58every one of us with him this is life eternal this it is that subdues the human heart cleansing
29:08it from pride self-seeking and lust and inclines it to bow before the only holy and loving god
29:16and to choose him and life in him this it is that turns from the brief joys and imperfect meanings
29:25of
29:25time and gives it a home in eternity that severs it in disposition and in destiny from the changing
29:34passing world and gives it an eternal inheritance as god's child
29:42to as many as believed christ to them he gave power to become the son of god
29:49to believe him and to accept the god he reveals is to become a son of god and is to
29:56enter into life
29:58eternal to be conquered by the divine love shown to us to feel that not only in worldly ambition or
30:07in
30:07any self-seeking but only in devotion to interest that our spiritual and general is the true life for us
30:16to yield ourselves to the spirit of christ and seek to be animated and possessed by that spirit
30:24this is to throw in our lot with god to be satisfied in him to have eternal life
30:33this earthly work a work of christ then being finished he asked the father to glorify him with his
30:41own self with the glory he had with him before the world was
30:48it seems perhaps vain to deny that this petition implies on christ's part a consciousness of a life
30:58his mind turns from the present from his earthly life to eternity to those regions beyond time
31:08which no created intelligence can follow and yet in which god alone exists and in that divine solitude
31:16he claims a place for himself if he merely meant that from eternity god had conceived of him the ideal
31:25man and if the existence and glory he speaks of were merely an existence in god's mind was unreal his
31:33words do not convey his meaning the glory he prayed for now was a conscious living glory he did not
31:41want to
31:41become extinct or be absorbed into the divine being he meant to continue and did continue in the actual
31:49personal living existence this was the glory he prayed for and this therefore must also have been the glory
31:57he had before the world was it was the glory of which it is proper to say i had it
32:04and not merely god conceived it
32:08it was enjoyed by christ before the world was and not only in the mind of god
32:17what that glory was no one can tell we know it was a glory not of position only but of
32:23character
32:24a glory which disposed and prepared him to sympathize with suffering
32:29and to give himself to the actual needs of men
32:33from that glory he came to share with men in their humiliation
32:37to expose himself to their scorn and abuse
32:40to win them to eternal life and to some true participation in his glory
32:48but christ's removal from the earthly and visible life involved a great change in the state of his
32:56disciples up to this point he had been present with them every day always showing them spiritual glory
33:04attracting them to it in his own person so long as they saw god's glory in so attractive and friendly
33:12a
33:12form it was not difficult for them to resist the world's temptations
33:18while i was with them in the world i kept them in your name that is by revealing the father
33:24to them
33:26but now i am no more in the world but they are in the world i come to you holy
33:31father
33:31keep through your own name those who you have given to me sanctify them through your truth
33:39your word is truth
33:42christ had been the word incarnate the utterance of god to men in him men recognized what god is and
33:50what
33:51god wills this made them holy this marvelous revelation of god and his love for men
33:58drew men to him they felt how divine and overcoming a love this was they adored the name
34:06father of which christ the son made them known they felt themselves close to god and claimed by him
34:15spurned by the world they recognized in themselves that which they could understand and be appealed to by
34:23such a love as god's their glory was to be children of god
34:31but now this visible image this incarnate word is to be withdrawn and christ commits to the father those
34:40whom he leaves behind holy father you whose holiness moves you to keep men separate to yourself from
34:50every evil contagion keep through your own name those who you have given me it is still by the recognition
35:00of god in christ that we are to be kept from evil by contemplating and penetrating this great demonstration
35:07of god to us by listening humbly and patiently to this incarnate word knowledge of the god whose
35:17world and is all existence knowledge of him in whom we live and whose holiness is silently judging and
35:27ruling all things knowledge that he who rules all and who is above all gives himself to us
35:35what a love that thinks no sacrifice too great
35:41it is this knowledge of the truth that saves us from the world it is the knowledge of those abiding
35:49realities which christ revealed of those great and loving purposes of god to man of the certainty of their
35:57fulfillment which recalls us to holiness and to god there is reality here all else is empty and delusion
36:10but these realities are obscured and thrust aside by a thousand pretentious frivolities which claim our more
36:18immediate attention and interest we are in the world and day by day the world insists that we consider it
36:26the great reality
36:29christ had conquered it and was leaving it why then did he not take with him all he had won
36:35to himself out of the world
36:39he did not do so because they had a work to accomplish which could only be accomplished in the world
36:46as he had consecrated himself to the work of making known the father so must they consecrate themselves to the
36:54same work
36:55as christ in his own person and life had brought clear before their minds the presence of the father
37:02so must they by their person and life show the world the existence and grace of god
37:09they must make permanent and universal the revelation he had brought that all the world might believe he was
37:17the true representative of god christ had lit them and with their light they were to kindle all men
37:26until the world was full of light a share of this work is given to each and every one of
37:33us
37:34we are permitted to mediate between god and men to carry to some the knowledge which gives life eternal
37:41it is made possible to us to be benefactors in the highest kind to give to this man and that
37:49a god to parents
37:51it is made possible to fill the opening and hungry mind of their child with the sense of god which
37:58will
37:59awe restrain in courage and gladden him all his life through to relieve the wants of today to refresh any
38:07human spirit by kindness and to forward the interests of any struggler in life is much
38:14but it is little compared to the joy and solid utility of disclosing to a human soul that which he
38:23at last recognizes as divine before which at last he bows in spontaneous adoration and absolute trust
38:33to the man who has long questioned whether there is a god who has doubted whether there is any morally
38:40perfect being any spirit existent greater and purer than man you have but to show christ and through
38:48his unconquerable love and untemptable holiness revealed to him a true god
38:59but it was not by telling men about god that christ convinced men that somewhere there existed
39:06a holy god who cared for them but by showing god's holiness and love present to them in his own
39:15person
39:16so that our words may fail to accomplish much if our life does not reveal a presence men cannot but
39:23see
39:24as divine it was by being one with the father christ revealed him it was the father's will his life
39:33the extension of this to the whole world of men is the utmost of christ's desire
39:41all will be accomplished when all men are one even as christ and the father are already one
39:51this text is often cited by those who seek to promote the union of the church
39:57the church but we think it belongs to a very different category and much higher region
40:03that all churches should be under similar government should adopt the same creed and use the same forms of
40:10worship even if possible is not supremely desirable but the real unity of sentiment toward christ and the
40:20zeal to promote his will is supremely desirable christ's will is all-embracing the purpose of god as wide as
40:30the universe and can be fulfilled only by an endless variety of disposition functions organizations and work
40:41we must expect that as time goes on men so far from being contracted into a narrow and monotonous uniformity
40:50will exhibit increasing diversities of thought and method and will become more and more differentiated in outward respect
40:58if the infinitely comprehensive purpose of god is to be fulfilled it must be so
41:05not only but if these purposes are to be fulfilled all intelligent agents must be at one with god and
41:14must be so profoundly in sympathy with god's mind as revealed in christ that however different one man's
41:23work or methods may be from another god's will will be carried out alike by both
41:32if this will can be more freely carried out by separate churches then outward separation is not a calamity
41:44only when outward separation leads one church to despise arrival or hate another
41:52does this become a calamity but whether churches abide separately or are incorporated
41:59in outward unity the desirable thing is that they are one in christ they have the same eagerness in service
42:09they are but one set of different regiments of an army fighting a common foe and supporting one another
42:18diverse outwardly in method function like artillery infantry cavalry or engineers
42:27or maybe even army navy or air force of the same country but they fight for one flag and one
42:34cause
42:34and their very diversity more vividly exhibits their real practical unity
42:43but why should the ultimate desire of christ the highest point to which the saviour's wishes for mankind reach
42:53because spirit is that which rules if we are one with god in spirit the future is ours
43:01this mighty universe in which we find ourselves today apparently governed by forces compared to which
43:08the most powerful human engines are feeble
43:12forces forces which keep this earth and orbs immeasurably larger suspended in space
43:21this universe is controlled by spirit designed for spiritual ends for ends of the highest kind
43:31and which concern conscious and moral beings
43:38it is as yet only by the smallest of glimpses we can see the happiness of those who are one
43:45with god
43:47it is only by inadequate comparisons with and mental effort we can attain to even a rudimentary concept of
43:55the future that waits for those who are in this way eternally blessed
44:00of them may well paul say all things are yours for you are christ's and christ is god's
44:13it is for christ all things are governed by god to be in him is to be above the reach
44:20of catastrophe
44:21to be as christ himself expressed it beside himself on the throne from which all things are ruled
44:30having been attracted by his character by what he is and does and having salt here on earth
44:36to promote his will we shall be his angel his agent agents hereafter
44:45but in a life in which spiritual glory irradiates everything and which an ecstasy and strength which this frail
44:54body could not contain will be the normal and constant index of life of god in us
45:02to do good to utter by word deed the love and power that are in us is the permanent joy
45:11of man
45:13with what alacrity does the surgeon approach the operation that he knows will be successful
45:20with what pleasure does the painter put on canvas the idea which fills his mind and which he knows will
45:27appeal to everyone who sees it whoever learns to do good by sharing god's spirit of communicating goodness
45:34will find everlasting joy in sharing what he has and can he will do so not with the feeble and
45:44hesitating mind and hand which here make almost every good action painful but with a spontaneity and sense
45:52of power which will be wholly pleasurable he will know that being one with god he can do good can
46:00accomplish and effect some solid and needy work slowly slowly very slowly indeed is this arrived at
46:10but time is of no consequence in the work that is eternal so long as we are sure we do
46:17not idly miss
46:18present opportunities of learning so long only as we know that our faces are turned in the right direction
46:26and that we have within us a right spirit if there lingers in our mind the feeling that the end
46:35christ
46:35proposes and utters as his last prayer for men does not draw us with irresistible force it might be enough
46:44to say to our own heart that this is our weakness that certainly in this prayer we do touch the
46:52very
46:52central significance of human life that however dimly human words may be able to convey thoughts
46:58regarding eternity we have here in christ's own words sufficient indication of the one abiding end
47:07and aim of any wisely directed human life whatever the future of man may be whatever joy life is to
47:16become in whatever far-reaching and prolonged experiences we are to learn the fruitfulness and efficacy of god's
47:24love whatever new sources and conditions of happiness we may in future worlds be introduced to
47:33whatever higher energies richer affections are to be opened in us
47:39all this can only be by our by our becoming one with god in whose will the future now lies
47:50it may also be said if we think this the prayer of one who was not in the full current
47:57of human life
47:59and had little understanding of men's ways that this prayer is fulfilled in very many who are deeply involved
48:06and busily occupied in this world they give their mind to their employment but their heart goes to higher
48:13aims and more enduring results
48:17to do good is to them of greater consequence than to make money
48:25to see the number of christ's sincere followers increasing is to them a truer joy than to see their own
48:32business flourish in the midst of their greatest prosperity they recognize there is something far
48:38better than worldly prosperity and that is to be kept from the evil that is in the world and to
48:46extend the
48:47knowledge of god they feel in common with all men that it is not always easy to remember the great
48:55spiritual kingdom with its mighty and unobtrusive interests but they are kept by the father's name
49:03and they do on the whole live under the influence of god and hope in his salvation
49:10it would help us all to do so were we to believe that christ's interest in us is such as
49:17this prayer reveals
49:19and that the great subject of his prayer is that we be kept from the evil that is in the
49:23world
49:24and be helpful in the great and enduring work of bringing into true fellowship men's lives
49:32god's goodness
49:34next of all our pointless labor and unworthiness of aim there runs this lofty aim of christ for us
49:44while we are greedily following after pleasure or thoughtlessly following ourselves in a mere
49:50worldliness our lord is praying to the father that we may left it in harmony with him and used as
49:58channels
49:59of his grace to others
50:06let us pray
50:09keep we beseech you o lord your church with your perpetual mercy
50:16because the frailty of man without you cannot but fail keep us ever by your help from all things hurtful
50:25and lead us to all things profitable to our salvation through jesus christ our lord amen
50:38may the lord bless us and keep us from all evil bringing us to everlasting life
50:45amen
50:47of
50:48of
50:49You
