00:00all right let's get to some baseball full slate of games everybody in action tonight
00:03we'll start with the orioles and mariners two teams that probably we thought would be better
00:09than they have been but are both actually playing a little bit better logan gilbert pitches tonight
00:14for seattle trevor rogers who went into the season as baltimore's ace has not really been that but
00:20seemingly is starting to get it together too high total tonight in baseball eight and a half seattle
00:26at baltimore do you have any position yeah and i've been a sucker for seattle pitching for two or
00:32three years now and i'm going to continue to go that route i don't think rogers from baltimore
00:36was ever i mean he was the ace in title but i'm not sure he was ever ready for that
00:40logan gilbert
00:40maybe not the ace of seattle but he's quite good you're looking at a guy that's only given up three
00:44earned runs over his last three outings he keeps the ball down and i think that's what you're going
00:48to see in this spot in a hitters park logan gilbert to me can get you five six even six
00:54and a half you
00:55know he's he gives you some volume that you don't always see in pictures in this day and age so
01:00i
01:00like him to get it done here keep him under wraps i'll go with seattle money line and if you're
01:05you're
01:06feeling a little frisky baltimore team total under okay uh tonight is a very rare occasion in baseball
01:13and by the way by the time this the first pitch is thrown the dodgers are probably not going to
01:18be
01:18plus money i'm seeing a slight plus on la that's like impossible in this day and age i have i
01:24don't think
01:24i've seen plus on the dodgers at all this season so that's what's required is that paul skeins has
01:29to pitch against them you know like that's like the only way unless they even if they have a bullpen
01:34day generally they're favored but here you go you got a shot here if you like la tonight to get
01:38a
01:38little plus and i think from a process standpoint you kind of have to i know that stepping in front
01:43of skeins isn't all that enticing and the dodgers when this thing opened were favorites which
01:48means the betting public's coming in on skeins which which i don't blame anybody for doing here but
01:53you're getting the best team in baseball against an average you know a decent uh pittsburgh team
01:59here so i'm gonna i'm gonna trust the process and go with the dodgers here eric lauer is opposing
02:04skeins and it's not as if eric lauer is any kind of scrub a 3.18 era last season he
02:10gets into trouble
02:11with these home runs and the launch angle and all that good stuff analytically not the greatest pitcher
02:15but you're in pnc park maybe they end on the track tonight give me i mean even if it's got
02:20to be late
02:21i'll take plus money and the best team in the sport and be on my way it's kind of what
02:25i'm doing
02:25with the spurs i just think they're better than the next they're underdogs i'll take it no different
02:29here maybe parlay them together yankees and guardians yankees walk off yesterday they're
02:35minus 124 tonight as garrett cole makes another start for new york getting stronger and stronger
02:40does he have enough to get through this one tonight and beat the guardians kyle i think he does i
02:45mean
02:45you mentioned it that he's kind of ramping up and i think we're getting pretty close to mid-season
02:51health wise at least of garrett cole the offense isn't the same without aaron judge these days but
02:55it doesn't have to be when you have cole on the mouth i think you're looking at something like four
03:00to three three to two something along those lines i'm not going to lay the run line but i will
03:04take
03:04the favorites on the road here in the bombers and then finally i don't get it i haven't been able
03:10to
03:10get it and i still don't get it the red socks are favored again i mean i don't know what
03:14i'm
03:14missing here at tampa bay kyle you tell me i don't i don't follow you're not missing anything
03:19tampa bay is as analytically sound as it gets boston just a big market with a big fan base and
03:24now a lot of deep pockets so i will continue to fade boston right there with you yeah i'd be
03:29fading
03:29them moving forward all right kyle thanks again always fun to check in on some major league baseball
03:34action with peter apple from just baseball as he joins us now weekly appearance with us to go over
03:39some of the landscape in baseball as well peter great to have you and uh let's get started with a
03:44little bit of a shift in the national league and not from a positive perspective unfortunately from
03:48a negative perspective we've seen the san diego padres peter take quite a dip they've had some
03:54underperforming veterans very specifically manny machado being one of them the pitching has just
03:58been okay and for the first time in several years it appears we have to ask questions as to whether
04:05or not
04:05the padres will be around for this chase for the postseason because peter this is a little bit of a
04:11change and by the way with an ownership change to a big sort of shift with them it feels like
04:15yeah this is a different padres team than in years past and the padres have always had a really good
04:21team and it's in large part because of the three guys at the top of their lineup whether that be
04:25fernando tatis jr manny machado and jackson merrill however this year you know what's been widely
04:31publicized is the fact that fernando tatis jr only has one home run but that's not the even the biggest
04:37issue here because tatis when you look at wrc plus has been a below average hitter manny machado is
04:43you know freaking out about all the advanced analytics in baseball but an easy analytic to
04:49use is batting average where he ranks dead last in major league baseball and then you have jackson
04:53merrill who i still believe is this budding star but last year it was more of a down year compared
04:59to his rookie year he was dealing with injuries but then this year i mean it's a 600 ops and
05:06i look at
05:06last night's game against the reds even though this team did win but it was a weird way to win
05:13right so it's a tie game three straight bunts from their seven eight nine hitters to score a run and
05:22then with no outs bases loaded it's tatis it's merrill and it's tie france what do they do out out
05:31out
05:32and they don't score now the padres still won that game but i think that sequence is a good symbol
05:38of
05:39what the padres are this year elite bullpen best bullpen in major league baseball i think a pretty
05:44fine starting rotation however this offense looks broken and that of course is their biggest problem
05:50yeah and i think peter to expand on that conversation the difference may be i don't know if you feel
05:56this
05:56way but the difference between this season and every other season is there's a new ownership group
06:01in place and so generally aj preller has been able to just go out add payroll trade uh players i
06:10mean
06:10maybe that's the case this season but i can't say that for sure so that's the first time in a
06:15decade
06:15that i don't know what the padres are going to be i totally agree with you but one thing that
06:20i don't
06:20want to underrate is preller's ability to figure it out because aj preller we've seen him be one of
06:26the most active if not the most active general manager not only at the trade deadline but in the
06:32off season and what does preller do best he's not as much concern with with the money it is the
06:39players
06:39that he has in his system his top prospects that he can potentially deal and it looked like going into
06:45the season that the padres farm system was completely baron of talent because they continue to trade
06:52that talent for big leaguers but of course here comes some better prospects especially ethan solace
07:00who we just released our top 100 prospects which you can find on just baseball.com and he ranks as
07:06high as number nine remind anyone of someone leo devries who he traded for mason miller preller has
07:13some weapons is he going to be able to make the biggest moves like he normally does probably not
07:17is he going to get creative i think so interesting all right we'll see let's hit the mvp market in
07:25the
07:25american league peter where uh wide open you know i mean like with judge going out like this thing is
07:30anybody's and we saw nick kurtz hit a couple of home runs i think this guy's going to get super
07:34hot
07:34he's in the mix ben rice is in the mix bobby witt is not even the favorite anymore it's jordan
07:40alvarez
07:40this is an incredible race it's an incredible race and when you take judge out just like you
07:46would take let's say shohei otani out in the national league it really becomes anybody's game
07:50but when i look at those current odds i find myself questioning who on that odds list is going to
07:57be on
07:57a really good team and what i mean by that is normally the mvp voters are at least going to
08:03lean
08:04towards a team in the playoff hunt or a team you know winning their own division and i look at
08:09the
08:09houston astros and i see them in fourth place in their division i look at the royals and bobby
08:14witt jr and see them in last place and arguably the worst division in all of major league baseball
08:18i look at ben rice he's on a great yankees team but he's falling behind in the war leaderboards
08:24because his defense isn't even close to on par and offensively he still lags a little bit behind
08:30yordan alvarez and then i look at nick kurtz again in third place in the american league west
08:34i look at julio rodriguez he could potentially be on an american league west winning mariners team
08:40however he just lags behind offensively than a lot of these guys so who do you really key in on
08:47it's really tough to know so when there's not a clear-cut answer i'm gonna go with the leader in
08:53the clubhouse and i think those odds are slightly wrong i think it absolutely should be bobby witt
08:57jr's award right now yordan alvarez is putting up prolific prolific offensive numbers but he plays
09:04a bad left field in dh right bobby witt jr is the best defender in all of sports and i
09:09don't even
09:09think bobby witt jr has gotten fully going offensively yet so for me the pick would be
09:15bobby witt jr especially if he is not the favorite however at those odds it's just not that appetizing
09:21of a price so right now i'm waiting but if he needed a pick right now it would definitely be
09:25bobby
09:26witt jr yeah i agree with that i just you know it's just not enticing enough for me like i
09:31want
09:31to throw something on buxton you know like i don't know i feel like at this stage someone's got to
09:35be
09:35better than plus 150 uh let's hit the yankees real quick 93 and a half is their win total still
09:42uh on the higher side even without judge because i guess there's some expectation that he returns
09:47again i don't know the medicals but i'm skeptical that anything is happening in the next couple months
09:51with him so they're just gonna have to carry the load but then peter this is a team
09:55that i am sure in august is gonna put the foot down and say hey let's go get some uh
10:00some extra
10:01players here i think they'll probably end up winning the east but i'm not willing to go over
10:05on anything else absolutely not i'm not willing to go over either you lose erin judge we've seen this
10:11with the yankees before right when erin judge hurt his toe you know at dodger stadium and the yankees
10:17went on a big time slide now will that happen again we have no idea but it definitely is not
10:21leaning
10:21me towards taking any overs currently with the new york yankees and it's definitely a time to wait
10:26because as you said they are going to be extremely active at the deadline you know brian cashman he
10:31sees garrett cole pitching well he knows max freed is great he sees what he's getting from cam schlittler
10:37and that's not even mentioning guys like will warren or ryan weathers he's definitely going to be
10:41active in the bullpen and he's going to go and get bats now that's why i've always said it's best
10:46to
10:47wait on the yankees because i only think they're going to get better and better and this would not
10:51be the time to invest in them that's why obviously you saw erin judge's odds come off the mvp boards
10:56so for me with the yankees it is sit and wait
11:02the paul skeins discourse is really interesting because he's struggled a lot during the day but
11:07he's pitched well during the night uh peter we just had kyle soppy on the show breaking down
11:12some baseball i i have never seen the dodgers plus money this season it looks like this is the
11:16first time all year i think at plus 100 which is not plus money by the way i should be
11:21honest
11:21like this is not really plus money um skeins is i don't think skeins is going to win the
11:28cy young the competition is just insane in the end up this year it's unbelievable christopher
11:34sanchez is pitching out of his mind he became the third pitcher in mlb history with a scoreless
11:41streak going at least 50 innings and the only lefty in mlb history to do so now if we're looking
11:48at paul skeins i think i'm a little bit worried about skeins right now is his fastball velocity
11:53is down a tick in his last start he was averaging 96.9 miles an hour which is awesome and
11:58he's still
11:59great last year was 98.2 and we've seen that trickle down a little bit his splitter has also
12:04been getting hit i would actually lean towards the dodgers and i think you're getting value on them
12:09because of course paul skeins is on one side but you just don't want to face the dodgers i would
12:13go with dodgers i would agree uh by the way real quick uh as we depart is this what we
12:20can expect
12:20in vegas going forward with all these runs is this what's going to happen in this new ballpark when
12:26they end up opening in a few years 30 runs it's second in um elevation to core field i think
12:33last year
12:34or last game was a little bit much not that much but still it's going to be a launch pad
12:40make sure you check out peter and all the folks at just baseball for the latest in college
12:44baseball news and also their mock draft 2.0 coming up in july that's out at justbaseball.com
12:51thanks peter for coming on we're gonna have a little fun as we wrap it up here george with a
12:57game that
12:57naturally we would never preview because there's so many better ones on the board
13:01but not tonight a total of 13 in a major league baseball game highest of the major league baseball
13:08season this is it tonight last night was 12 tonight is 13 you got the brewers and a's and the
13:16pitching
13:16isn't as good as it was last night what are you gonna do with this one george a lot of
13:22home runs
13:22the a's were like the old swing and a's hitting a bunch of bombs even milwaukee at milwaukee's office
13:27i think they're last in the big leagues in home runs even they were hitting home runs yesterday
13:31oh that's a key stat there right they don't use the hit home runs and they were uh this game
13:35it was
13:36at 12 last night if you're on it while watching the a's uh uh the a's and brewers it was
13:40actually 12
13:41it went up to 13 overnight all right so i got it at 12 uh i gotta tell you it
13:45stinks it just smells
13:47why isn't it higher there were 29 runs last night user kyle harrison's pitching right there's 29 they
13:54both did this i think they do it again tonight it's values the bulls going to travel here you know
13:59uh so
13:59yeah i'm on the over i'm on the alternate over i went up to fifth i think about the 15
14:03so i have
14:03a few overs back here uh no choice until they till you prove me this is not this makes course
14:08field
14:08look like the grand canyon all right so well yeah it was a lot of runs last night it was
14:12a fun game i
14:13didn't want to end it unless it'll add to 2 p 2 a.m eastern time and i didn't want
14:17that it was fun to
14:18watch here i think they're going to do it again tonight maybe not 29 but i think what i think
14:22we're
14:22getting close to 20. yeah i i cannot imagine this total sitting at 13 when they throw out the first
14:27pitch
14:27tonight 10 o'clock eastern all right george enjoy the hockey and the baseball tonight we'll talk soon
14:32and die
14:33you
