00:00Back to Major League Baseball right here on the early line.
00:02Joe Ranieri and Donnie Wright said right here on the Sports Grid Network.
00:05You want to listen to us, you want to watch us, easy to do.
00:07Make sure you get that Sports Grid app downloaded today.
00:10Follow all of your favorite hosts and handicappers here on the network.
00:14Easy to do, great app, keep you in the know.
00:16It's the way we do it, which means we've got to keep you in the know
00:18about Major League Baseball.
00:19The Yankees, wow, what a victory yesterday.
00:21Finally in the win column.
00:22Felt like they were on 60 wins for an eternity.
00:24Get their 61st win of the season, a 3-2 victory over the Texas Rangers,
00:28which, again, saw Paul Goldschmidt hit a solo home run in the top of the 7th inning,
00:32and that was enough for the 3-2 victory.
00:34The Yankees, a much-needed win yesterday, Joe.
00:38Yeah, and maybe more importantly, Donnie,
00:41that they might have actually found their closer,
00:44which they might not have done given the fact that I believe Boone wanted to take him out,
00:51but Bednar looked at him and said, absolutely not.
00:54You're not taking me out here.
00:56But because he came in, and you mentioned it, right?
00:59An inning and two-thirds, he had to get five outs,
01:01and it didn't start off great with a couple of runners on,
01:04but Boone let him stay in, which is kind of crazy,
01:08and then he ended up delivering.
01:09So maybe the best thing about what happened in that win yesterday
01:13is that they now actually know who their closer should be,
01:17because I think we can all agree, and ain't Devin Williams.
01:20Yeah, past the night, it's like pitching really isn't their problem there,
01:23even though Devin Williams did blow that game.
01:25The Yankees' bats have been a little bit cold here as of late,
01:27and granted, Texas does have some decent pitches,
01:29but Leiter went yesterday three and a third innings,
01:31pitched two earned runs, or excuse me, two runs and one earned off,
01:34but also credit that bullpen for the Yankees for holding up Leiter,
01:37Junior, Hill, De Los Santos, and Bednar.
01:39No earned runs given up after Rodon gave you a solid start,
01:42five innings and two earned runs on the road.
01:43Everything worked in the Yankees' favor,
01:45but I do like where you're coming from, Joe, to start the show.
01:48It wouldn't have been easy if they won 20-1.
01:49It's like, okay, whoo, but it is nice where you get that victory,
01:52where you actually had to earn that in high-leverage situations
01:56and say, you know what?
01:57We can do this, Joe.
01:59Yeah, and you're doing it to a team that is on your heels right now,
02:04because I think the Yankees now just a game and a half ahead of the Rangers
02:07for that third and final wildcard spot.
02:10So, you know, that was, you know, a playoff-style game
02:14that both teams wanted it here,
02:17as the Rangers are trying to catch the Yankees
02:19and the Yankees are trying to catch the bleeding.
02:20But the more questions the Yankees can answer to themselves
02:25in this next couple of weeks with some wins, Donnie,
02:29the better off it is.
02:30You need to know you can win those games,
02:32those kind of grind-em-out games.
02:33You can't win every game, you know, 15-2.
02:36Like, you have to be able to count on your bullpen,
02:39and you have to know who your closer is, Donnie.
02:42And to this point, we're in August, and we had no idea who the Yankee closer,
02:48the number one guy.
02:49Who is the Rivera of that bullpen that's going to come in and shut it down?
02:53And I hope that Bednar showed yesterday that maybe he can be that guy.
02:58Yes, absolutely.
02:59And maybe he can be that guy.
03:00Maybe Devin Williams can get it together,
03:02just hasn't got it together yet as a New York Yankee.
03:04But if we look at the division landscape here,
03:06particularly in the American League,
03:08you look at the Toronto Blue Jays in the East,
03:10still with a four-game lead over the Red Sox,
03:11who finally lost a game yesterday.
03:13But also Toronto stays hot.
03:15Those bats are absolutely cranking right now.
03:17They have won three games in a row.
03:18The New York Yankees still six and a half games back.
03:21But if we slide it over to that central division,
03:23remember that old Rockwell song from the 1980s?
03:26I always feel like somebody's watching me.
03:30The Guardians have a chance to catch the Detroit Tigers.
03:33They're now within six games.
03:35This is a team supposed to be left for dead,
03:36making major changes at the deadline.
03:38A couple of pitchers kicked off,
03:40at least to the end of the month,
03:41it feels like, for gambling on their own team.
03:43Could they catch the Detroit Tigers
03:45for those Guardians?
03:46I am praying, Donnie,
03:49that the producers behind the scene
03:51clip that little doohickey song you just sang there,
03:55because that was absolutely gold.
03:59Absolute gold.
04:00Really nice.
04:01I kind of got chills going up and down my arm right now.
04:04So, can anybody catch them?
04:07Listen, the problem here is that I feel like the American League
04:13is still up for grabs.
04:15And to me, there's a half a dozen teams on that list, Donnie,
04:18that can get hot over the last stretch, last six weeks here.
04:22And we might be going, wow, well, didn't see that coming here.
04:26I feel like the National League's a little more top-heavy,
04:29where we have a pretty good idea of who's going to be there
04:32when it's all said and done, I think it's still anybody's game
04:36in the American League here.
04:37And I think any one of those teams right now,
04:39you see the Guardians getting hot now,
04:41the Rangers are finally starting to live up to the potential.
04:45You know, are the Astros going to take a step back?
04:48Could very well be.
04:49I'm expecting that as well.
04:51So, I still think the American League pennant,
04:54wide open.
04:55And you can get some pretty good prices for some teams
04:58who could very well get red hot and ride that right
05:01into a World Series appearance.
05:03Absolutely.
05:03And by the way, you want a little quick trivia
05:05on that Rockwell song there?
05:06There's a super famous, super famous singer on that song
05:10that was friends with Rockwell, that sang the hook,
05:13but didn't want any credits and didn't want to get paid
05:15for the song.
05:16Do you know who that singer was by any chance, Joe Ranieri?
05:19I believe it was MJ, if I'm not mistaken.
05:22I mean, I'm pretty sure it was MJ there.
05:24So, kudos, though.
05:27Classic.
05:27Absolute classic.
05:29Just hooking his boy up there.
05:30It's like, oh, that's Michael Jackson's song.
05:31No, it isn't.
05:31Isn't that Michael Jackson?
05:32Check the credits.
05:33Oh, he's not listed anywhere there.
05:34So, a little bit of trivia there that the young pups
05:36need to know.
05:37That's what we bring you on the early line,
05:38which includes the West out there, the Houston Astros.
05:41They lost yesterday.
05:42The Mariners have won three games in a row.
05:43Two games out now.
05:45Rangers, four games out.
05:46But I like where you're going here.
05:47It just feels like it is a NASCAR race
05:50where everybody is packed together
05:52with equal opportunities to win coming down the stretch, Joe.
05:55It really does.
05:57And some of those prices, Donnie, are if, you know,
06:00I don't know that you're just,
06:02does everyone expect Toronto just to continue this
06:05and run away with the best record?
06:08No, I do not here.
06:10I think the American League West
06:12is going to be a battle until the final week.
06:14I don't think anybody is catching the Tigers.
06:17I think they're safe.
06:18Although it does appear the Guardians,
06:21boy, they, just think about the Guardians
06:23since the All-Star break and what they have done
06:25and how they have now at least made it feasible
06:29that they can catch a team like Detroit
06:31if they go on a losing streak again.
06:33So, you know, they were in no man's land.
06:35We had written them all off a month ago here,
06:39the Guardians, and yet you get hot and look at that.
06:41It doesn't take long, Donnie,
06:43before all of a sudden the tides turn.
06:45And I still think we're going to get a lot more
06:47of that in the American League
06:49before it's all said and done.
06:51Yeah, you see that graphic right there,
06:52leading the American League right now
06:54in the odds market is the Detroit Tigers.
06:56I mean, look at the NL,
06:57let's just say it's the Los Angeles Dodgers
06:59and maybe closely, we'll get to them
07:00with the Philadelphia Phillies.
07:01Like, okay, like that sounds about right.
07:04I still see the Detroit Tigers up at a plus 350
07:06and it's not my fault.
07:07Like they're a good baseball team.
07:08But now that you see that they were running away
07:11with their division, I don't know,
07:1210, 11, 12 games up.
07:13They cut that in half.
07:14It's now the month of August.
07:16The pressure starts to build.
07:17It seems like a paper tiger
07:19at the top of that odds market right now, Joe.
07:23I've been saying now for weeks,
07:25I do not believe in this Detroit team
07:28in any way, shape, or form.
07:29Great story.
07:31But when we're talking about representing
07:33the American League in the World Series
07:34and then possibly winning the World Series,
07:37yeah, I'm not buying Rafael Montero.
07:41I'm not buying Kyle Finnegan.
07:43I'm not buying this lineup, you know,
07:47and with Riley Green, who can't hit water
07:49if he fell out of a boat.
07:51Like this is, they don't appear to be
07:53a championship lineup.
07:56What they are was a team that started off the season
07:59and won a ton of games
08:00and took advantage of a schedule,
08:02but that's going to run out of steam at some point.
08:05I don't think you're going to go toe-to-toe
08:07with some of these teams on that list.
08:10Yeah, you don't look at these teams like,
08:11oh, Detroit can't beat them.
08:12Toronto can't beat them.
08:14Mariners can't beat them.
08:15Astros can't beat them.
08:16There are a lot of question marks
08:17on a lot of those teams, which keeps it fun,
08:18which is why they are so stacked up.
08:20But if I was just looking at one team, Joe, right,
08:22in the American League and say,
08:24give me that horse that you want to root for,
08:26that's fun to bet,
08:27and you think can do some damage,
08:28maybe the Seattle Mariners getting it together here,
08:31five-to-one price,
08:32trying to track down the Houston Astros, Joe.
08:35Why not?
08:36Any one of these teams is still in play.
08:40I don't think we'll cover the National League
08:42coming up, Donnie,
08:43but to me,
08:45the National League,
08:46we can point to one or two teams and say,
08:48yeah, that's where it's going to be.
08:50You can't point to a team on here and go,
08:54absolutely, that's going to be your front runner,
08:56because it certainly isn't Detroit,
08:57despite what the market's saying.
09:00Need a lot of respect here.
09:01By the way,
09:01those Texas Rangers,
09:02which took the series against the New York Yankees,
09:04they opened up a set against the Philadelphia Phillies
09:06with Zach Wheeler,
09:07got his start pushed back,
09:08maybe not feeling so good in that shoulder.
09:10The Phillies are telling you,
09:11don't worry about it,
09:11but that's a huge series for the Rangers
09:13to try to get out in that AL West race.
09:15More Major League Baseball coming up next.
09:17Joe Ohtani time.
09:19Let's talk about them.
09:20Los Angeles Dodgers,
09:21they're not panicked here.
09:22It's not like the Yankees situation.
09:23Oh, no,
09:24we fell out of first place,
09:25second place now in the third place,
09:26and we're fighting for a well-out card.
09:27We expect the Dodgers to be there
09:28in the end all be all,
09:30but yesterday we had a five to three victory,
09:32not by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
09:33It was by the St. Louis Cardinals.
09:35And why was this a big game?
09:36Well,
09:36Shohei Ohtani was back on the mound
09:37after leaving his previous start,
09:39Joe,
09:40with a little bit of fatigue,
09:41maybe cramping in his hip or leg.
09:43This start actually saw him
09:44get stretched out a bit.
09:46Four innings pitched in this game.
09:48Excuse me,
09:48four innings pitched.
09:4954 was the pitch count.
09:51Two hits,
09:52one earned run given up,
09:53which is fine,
09:53but eight strikeouts here.
09:55He was really good.
09:55At the plate,
09:56he hit a home run.
09:57You tell me,
09:58Ohtani started a game,
10:00Joe Ranieri,
10:00had eight strikeouts,
10:02and hit a home run.
10:03And the Dodgers lost to the 58 and 58 Cardinals.
10:06What?
10:07Yeah.
10:08Yeah.
10:08Bullpen,
10:09which has always been the issue here.
10:11We knew he was going to go four
10:13because we know the Dodgers
10:14are going to look to stretch him out
10:16over the month of August in his starts
10:19to get him ready for the postseason.
10:21And true to form,
10:23he looked at times
10:24just absolutely unhittable there.
10:27To go four innings and strike out eight
10:29is a pretty good ratio there,
10:30Donnie.
10:31But to do it
10:32and then go to the plate
10:34and be able to give yourself a lead
10:36as a pitcher,
10:36it's just not something
10:38we're used to seeing
10:39in Major League Baseball.
10:41We've not seen that
10:42for a very,
10:42very long time.
10:44And this guy,
10:44the guy's a unicorn
10:45as far as I'm concerned.
10:47He's a Halley's Comet.
10:48Guy comes around once
10:49every 75 plus years
10:51that is just that much better
10:53than everybody else.
10:54It truly is.
10:56Enjoy it.
10:56Don't take it for,
10:57don't take advantage of it.
10:59Don't forget about,
11:00watch this guy
11:01so you can say that,
11:02yes,
11:03I remember when,
11:04what possibly could be
11:06the greatest two-way baseball player
11:07in the history of the game.
11:09Yeah,
11:09I remember when he was
11:11with the Dodgers.
11:12Exactly.
11:12He's a great baseball player
11:15and this is why sometimes
11:16we talk about,
11:17usually,
11:18the smartest man in the room
11:19is the odds maker, right?
11:20Like, okay,
11:20he makes the odds here.
11:21House is always going to win.
11:23I just have no idea
11:24where the odds market goes
11:25at times when we talk
11:26about the National League Cy Young.
11:28And if you guys have watched
11:29this network,
11:29and I know you have,
11:31for what,
11:31three months,
11:32I just keep saying,
11:33it's over in the National League.
11:35Shwayo Tani is the MVP.
11:36He does what nobody else can do.
11:38He's going to be just as good
11:39a hitter as anybody else
11:40and now he is on the mound
11:41and he's being stretched out.
11:43So we have those
11:44minus 220s,
11:44minus 240s.
11:45Now we're at that
11:46minus 1450 price,
11:48which means,
11:49look,
11:49he's the favorite to win it.
11:51And I keep saying
11:51this should be minus 14 million
11:54as a price point here
11:55on Shwayo Tani.
11:56Schwarber,
11:57love you.
11:57You hit 70,
11:58you'll be in the conversation.
11:59You hit 55,
12:00you're not in the conversation here.
12:01Ohtani is going to win this award.
12:03And as Joe was just saying,
12:04this is something
12:05that we don't see
12:06in Major League Baseball.
12:07And I'm telling you
12:07the next couple of years,
12:08because if Ohtani is healthy
12:10and is still a very good hitter
12:11and still pitches,
12:12he should be the MVP
12:14for the next decade
12:15with nobody even coming close
12:17to being in the running.
12:18But here's what we're going to do,
12:19similar to what we do
12:19with Nicole Jokic.
12:2120,
12:2215,
12:23and 13.
12:23Boy,
12:24he's really losing his grip
12:25out there.
12:25Oh,
12:25really?
12:25A center getting a triple-double
12:26every single night.
12:27He's losing his grip
12:28and you got to give it
12:29to somebody else.
12:29And it's going to turn into,
12:31well,
12:31Ohtani pitches.
12:32That's not fair.
12:32You can't hold against
12:33the other Major League Baseball players
12:34for not pitching
12:35and hitting at the same time.
12:36We're going to get to that point.
12:38Ohtani is so far and away
12:39the best player
12:40in the National League.
12:41Again,
12:42it should be minus 14 million
12:44for him to win this award,
12:46not minus 1450.
12:48No,
12:48it's not even close.
12:50And unlike
12:51his fellow
12:53former MVP there,
12:55Aaron Judge,
12:56who now all of a sudden
12:58the odds have plummeted there,
13:00I can't think of anything,
13:02even if he doesn't,
13:03let's put it this way,
13:04Don.
13:04If Ohtani doesn't play
13:05one inning
13:06the rest of the regular season here,
13:09he's still your MVP.
13:11And it's bar none to me.
13:12So, I mean,
13:13here we are with,
13:14you know,
13:14six to seven weeks
13:15left in a regular season
13:16and guess what?
13:17He don't play another game,
13:18he's still your MVP here.
13:20Nobody's catching him.
13:21Like,
13:21you look behind the scenes too.
13:22Like,
13:23again,
13:23it's not one MVP
13:24like in the NFL.
13:25It's like,
13:25okay,
13:25who's the MVP?
13:26Like,
13:26oh man,
13:26maybe Mahomes,
13:27maybe Jalen Hurts,
13:28maybe a guy from the NFC,
13:29maybe a guy from the AFC.
13:30It's individualized
13:31where it's American League
13:32and it's the National League.
13:33It would be fun to see though
13:34where Aaron Judge
13:35and Shohei Ohtani
13:36both healthy down the stretch
13:37of what that can be.
13:38But it's not.
13:38Like,
13:38Aaron Judge is going to win
13:39that award in the American League
13:40but like,
13:41Kyle Schwarber's having
13:41a fantastic season.
13:43But let's understand this.
13:44Kyle Schwarber is just a DH as well
13:45at this point.
13:46Now you have Shohei Ohtani
13:47as the DH
13:48but now he's pitching
13:49every fifth day.
13:50That sort of wipes
13:50Kyle Schwarber out of the market.
13:52Pico Armstrong,
13:53love you.
13:53Having a great season in Chicago.
13:54You're not an MVP.
13:56Neither is Manny Machado,
13:57Juan Soto,
13:57or Kyle Tucker.
13:58Great baseball players
13:59but there's great
14:00and there's absolutely elite.
14:02And that's what Shohei Ohtani is like.
14:04Where does he wind up
14:05on the season?
14:06Like,
14:06what statistics
14:07would you give
14:07Kyle Schwarber,
14:08Pete Crow Armstrong,
14:09or Manny Machado
14:10the MVP over Ohtani?
14:11Specifically, Joe,
14:12if Ohtani is now,
14:13all right,
14:14you saw me for four innings.
14:15I'm going five innings or more
14:17right down the stretch
14:18in a playoff race.
14:19I don't see where this number,
14:21it's so low right now
14:22at 1450.
14:23But most of us, Joe,
14:24aren't going to lay
14:24$1,450 down to win 100
14:27and wait six months
14:29to get that back.
14:30But if you had that money
14:31to put away,
14:31he's your guaranteed MVP
14:33barring disastrous injury.
14:36Correct.
14:37It's,
14:38even then,
14:39I mean,
14:39the argument,
14:41there is an argument
14:42to be had
14:42that says,
14:43you know what,
14:44I wish he was
14:45just a hitter.
14:46Or if that's only
14:47where his focus was,
14:49or if he was just
14:50going to pitch
14:51and how good he could be
14:52from that standpoint.
14:54You know,
14:54the problem with Ohtani
14:55is that he is so good
14:56he needs to be
14:57an everyday player.
14:58And you can't say that
14:59about a lot of guys,
15:00Donnie.
15:01I mean,
15:01that's,
15:01they don't have that option
15:03of pitching every fifth game.
15:04This guy does,
15:06and he's going to be doing it
15:07for some time,
15:09provided he stays healthy.
15:10And if the injury
15:11is his arm
15:12for some reason,
15:14he's still going to hit
15:1540,
15:1650 home runs a year.
15:17He's going to drive in
15:18as a leadoff batter,
15:20Donnie,
15:20as a leadoff batter.
15:22That's what he is
15:22with the Dodgers here.
15:24Let me ask you a question
15:25too about Ohtani.
15:26Like,
15:26what is our game plan
15:27for Ohtani?
15:28Like,
15:28obviously not being the manager
15:29or the general manager
15:30of the Dodgers.
15:31Is that plan to get him
15:32five,
15:32six,
15:32seven,
15:33maybe up to eight innings
15:34and being a full-time pitcher
15:35down the stretch?
15:36Or is it,
15:37we got a good thing
15:37going right now.
15:38We use him every fifth day.
15:39We don't want him
15:40throwing a hundred pitches here
15:41because we can't risk him
15:42damaging his elbow
15:43where he would have to get
15:44to Georgia,
15:44which means he can't even
15:45be a hitter at that point.
15:47What would you do
15:47with Ohtani?
15:48Just let him go
15:49in this progression
15:49and say,
15:50you've always been a pitcher
15:51and we'll stretch out
15:51the seven innings
15:52or do you keep him
15:53sort of under a little bit
15:54of a belt here?
15:56I would do
15:57exactly
15:58what they're doing
16:00every year.
16:01I wouldn't put him
16:02on the mound
16:02until late July
16:05into August,
16:06stretch him out
16:07and make him available
16:08for every postseason run
16:10that you're going
16:11to be available.
16:11I don't need him
16:12pitching in April.
16:13I don't need him
16:14pitching in May,
16:15Dottie.
16:15I want him pitching
16:16July through the postseason
16:18and that's it.
16:19That's exactly
16:20how I would handle
16:21Ohtani from this point
16:22moving forward.
16:24By the way,
16:24he's got really good
16:25stuff on the mound.
16:26Does he ever transition,
16:28Joe,
16:28to the bullpen
16:29and just close games out
16:30because your career
16:31can go so much longer
16:32and only throw 15 pitches
16:34a night at that point.
16:36More hot topics
16:36for Major League Baseball
16:37next right here
16:38on the Early Line.
16:39Right back at it here
16:40on the Early Line.
16:41Major League Baseball today,
16:43not a huge card,
16:44Joe Ranieri,
16:44so you really have to
16:45factor in what you want
16:46to play
16:47and what angles
16:48you want to take.
16:48There's a game
16:48at noon today,
16:49right underway,
16:504 o'clock in the afternoon,
16:516.40 and 7.15,
16:52so it's spaced out nicely,
16:54Joe.
16:54How are we feeling
16:55about Major League Baseball?
16:56Only a four-game card today.
16:58Yeah,
16:59and actually,
17:00we got a lot of
17:01number one pitchers
17:02going today
17:03for a team,
17:04so maybe is there
17:05any value in fading
17:06some of these guys?
17:07We're going to have
17:08to check it out.
17:09Always tough
17:10to take Pittsburgh
17:10full game anytime
17:12and sometimes
17:12even harder to take
17:13him when Paul Skeens
17:14is on the mound.
17:14Dottie,
17:15what are you,
17:15crazy?
17:15He's the best pitcher
17:16they have.
17:16He's probably going to win
17:17the Cy Young
17:17in the National League.
17:18Not so fast.
17:19I don't think he's either
17:20going to go nine innings,
17:21so if you leave
17:21with a two-to-one lead
17:22and leave it up
17:22to that bullpen
17:23that no longer has
17:24guys like David Bednar,
17:25things could get tough here,
17:26but let's set the table
17:27for today.
17:27They had 951, 952.
17:29It's the Reds
17:29and it's the Pittsburgh Pirates.
17:31Singer going up
17:32against Paul Skeens.
17:33640 start tonight
17:34in Pittsburgh,
17:35a minus 180 price overnight.
17:36It's downshifted a little bit.
17:38You'll see the graphic come up.
17:38It's a minus 172 price,
17:40but right now live,
17:41178s to minus 170s
17:43depending on where
17:43you're shopping at
17:44and a total, Joe,
17:45that's listed at 7.5
17:47and 7s depending
17:48on where you're shopping here.
17:49Not a lot of runs
17:50expected tonight.
17:51Pittsburgh is expected
17:52to win,
17:53but are you foolish
17:54to bet Pittsburgh full game
17:56when you say,
17:56you know what?
17:56I'll just take my chances.
17:58Pittsburgh run line first five
17:59and deal with it here.
18:00What do you think tonight
18:01between the Reds
18:02and the Pirates?
18:03Listen, in his brief
18:04career so far,
18:06Skeens has pretty much
18:08just dominated the Reds
18:10in every way,
18:11shape, or form here.
18:13The problem with Paul Skeens
18:15and backing him so much
18:17is the fact that,
18:18yeah, he could probably
18:19go five innings
18:21out of a 2-0 lead.
18:22The bullpen of Pittsburgh
18:23gets involved,
18:24gives up a three-run home run,
18:25and it's 3-2.
18:26Do they lose?
18:27And that's, you know,
18:28rinse and repeat here.
18:29The great question to me is,
18:31is there any value
18:33in looking at Skeens
18:35dominating them once again?
18:36And I think there is.
18:37I think the,
18:38if it ain't broke,
18:39we shouldn't fix it.
18:40I do not trust
18:41this Pittsburgh lineup
18:43to get to Brady Singer,
18:44who hasn't been terrible,
18:46but at the same time,
18:48it's the Pittsburgh lineup.
18:50We know the Reds
18:51aren't going to get to Skeens.
18:52They have not yet
18:53to this particular point.
18:54Three and a half
18:55is the first five total.
18:57This has got one-nothing
18:58heading into the sixth inning
18:59written all over it,
19:01Donnie, once again,
19:01and that's exactly
19:02how I would play it.
19:04Yeah, just keep it simple here.
19:05Skeens is the better pitcher
19:06on the mound.
19:07You know,
19:07if he gets blown up,
19:08what is that,
19:08five innings pitch
19:09and two earned runs,
19:10which Pittsburgh still
19:11could have a lead
19:11at that point,
19:12but no way I'm going
19:13to take that full game
19:13here knowing that
19:14they'll probably have a lead
19:15and hand it over
19:16to the bullpen,
19:16then it's out of your grasp
19:18at that point.
19:18Now let's go up
19:19to the Pacific Northwest
19:20here.
19:21The Seattle Mariners
19:22put on a little bit
19:23of offensive show yesterday,
19:24dropping eight runs
19:25in their game today.
19:26They're going to take
19:26on the Chicago White Sox
19:27once again.
19:28Shane Smith is on the mound
19:29going up against Logan Gilbert.
19:31You look at the lines here
19:32at minus 255 overnight.
19:33They're gone.
19:34Minus 290s
19:35and minus 295s
19:36out here,
19:37depending on where
19:37you're shopping at
19:38and a total of seven
19:39and a half.
19:39Logan Gilbert
19:40is a strikeout machine.
19:41Smith,
19:42not really a great pitcher.
19:4318 and a third innings
19:44pitched over his past
19:4545 days.
19:46His ERA,
19:479.82.
19:49So there you go.
19:49Almost a $3 favorite
19:51for the Mariners today.
19:52They'll probably win this game,
19:53but the question is,
19:54do you want to lay that price?
19:56No,
19:57I don't,
19:57but I'd be willing
19:58to lay a much cheaper price
20:00and expect Logan Gilbert
20:01to get the win
20:02in this game here.
20:04No way do I trust
20:06this White Sox lineup.
20:08This is the final game
20:10of a long road trip
20:11for them.
20:12It's a getaway game,
20:13no less.
20:14So I do think
20:15maybe the White Sox
20:16doing a lot of swinging
20:17and missing here
20:19and Logan Gilbert
20:20should have no problem
20:21getting the win.
20:22I believe every game
20:23this series,
20:24the other two
20:25starting pitchers
20:26both got wins
20:27and they did it
20:28rather easily.
20:298-3 in the first game,
20:308-6 yesterday.
20:32I do think that,
20:33I do think that
20:34backing Logan Gilbert
20:35to get the win
20:36at minus 110,
20:38minus 115
20:39is a better opportunity.
20:41Yeah,
20:41Gilbert's last 45 days,
20:43Joe,
20:4343 innings pitched here,
20:44by the way,
20:44a 3X fifth number,
20:45which is very good.
20:46ERA is slightly higher,
20:47but his K's per nine,
20:4812.14,
20:49the best on the card
20:50that's even better
20:51than Paul Skeen's
20:52over the past 45 days.
20:54Miami and Atlanta here.
20:56Atlanta just playing
20:57out the string.
20:58Miami's lapped them.
20:59Obviously,
20:59the Phillies are way higher.
21:01Same thing with
21:01the New York Mets.
21:02Carlos Carrasco
21:03is on the mound
21:03going up against
21:03Yuri Perez.
21:04Yuri Perez has been
21:05a decent pitcher here
21:06on the Major League
21:07Baseball season.
21:08By the way,
21:08just this last 45 days,
21:09Joe,
21:091.64 ERA,
21:11a struggling Atlanta lineup,
21:12a slight favorite here
21:13for Miami,
21:14which tells you
21:14everything you need
21:15to know.
21:16The Marlins are favored
21:16on the road
21:17against the Atlanta Braves
21:18around a minus 120 price
21:20as it sits currently.
21:21Eights to eight and a half,
21:22depending on where
21:22you're shopping at
21:23for the total.
21:24But Carlos Carrasco,
21:25one of those pitchers
21:26that's just looking
21:27to earn a paycheck.
21:28And the reason I say that
21:29is Atlanta's not
21:30bringing up any other arms
21:31out of their
21:32minor league system
21:33to start their clock
21:34in Major League Baseball.
21:35They basically said,
21:36we're going to pick up
21:36Fetty and Carrasco,
21:38innings eaters,
21:39bombed or not bombed,
21:40just go out and pitch
21:41so we don't have to waste
21:42any of our arms
21:43in the minors.
21:44Whenever you have
21:44a situation like that,
21:46there's no way
21:46I'm betting them.
21:47I'm backing Miami today
21:48in this game.
21:49I think they take care
21:49of Atlanta.
21:50Joe, how about you?
21:51I listen.
21:52I might even go
21:53into the alternate market
21:55here and say,
21:56you know what?
21:57The advantage I have
21:59with Yuri Perez
22:01starting this game
22:02over Carrasco
22:04is absolutely crazy.
22:07And it's worth maybe
22:08taking a risk
22:09of maybe laying
22:10one, one and a half
22:11with Miami
22:12in the first five.
22:14Yuri Perez has got
22:15a 1.06 ERA
22:16over his past six starts.
22:18They're rolling out
22:19Carlos Carrasco
22:20because they basically
22:21have nobody else.
22:23And he got lit up,
22:24I believe.
22:25His lead,
22:25the first start
22:26that he had here.
22:28And listen,
22:28this is an important game
22:29for Miami.
22:30They got a chance
22:30to get back to 500.
22:32That's a big deal
22:33for a team
22:34that most people thought
22:35was going to be
22:35one of the worst
22:36in Major League Baseball.
22:38They're a young team.
22:39They're in the wild card hunt
22:40and they have their ace
22:42on the mound.
22:43I would look to try
22:44and get plus money
22:46in a big way
22:47in the alternate market
22:48with the fish
22:49in the first five
22:50on this one.
22:51I think they hit tonight.
22:52I think their lineup
22:53sets up pretty well
22:54against Atlanta.
22:54And again,
22:54I think you have
22:55the better pitcher
22:55on the mound.
22:56Yuri Perez,
22:56not a guy
22:56that a lot of people
22:57talk about.
22:57He's a very good pitcher
22:58there for the Marlins,
22:59particularly this year.
23:00We'll see how it plays out.
23:01But Atlanta fading fast.
23:02Maybe the Marlins,
23:03a little bit of fun.
23:04They'll play spoiler
23:04down the stretch here
23:06with Atlanta season
23:07already spoiled
23:08at this point.
23:08How about a 12.05 tip time
23:10here,
23:10as I like to say,
23:119.57,
23:129.58.
23:13Lopez,
23:13the lefty,
23:14versus Parker,
23:14the lefty.
23:15Yesterday,
23:16let me down.
23:18Sacramento scoring
23:18one run yesterday.
23:20He's on your boy,
23:20DRS's,
23:21you know what list
23:21at this point right now.
23:22Their favorite again today
23:23to win a minus 134 price
23:25in a total.
23:25Let's listen at 9
23:26across the board.
23:27Parker is my worst pitcher
23:29on the card today.
23:30Last 45 days,
23:31which included 37
23:32in the third innings pitch,
23:33Joe.
23:33How about a 7 ERA
23:34and a 560 XFIP number?
23:36The Athletics did not
23:37hit yesterday.
23:38Their lineup doesn't present
23:39great against lefties,
23:40but this is a terrible
23:41left-handed pitcher.
23:42I think the A's probably
23:43take care of business here,
23:44but sometimes hard
23:44laying a price
23:45on a team so far away
23:47from home
23:47on a getaway day
23:48in the early afternoon
23:50in the month of August.
23:52Yeah,
23:53the A's were so exhausted
23:55after scoring 16 runs
23:57and 24 hits
23:58on Tuesday
23:58that they felt,
24:00yeah,
24:00they were just,
24:01their arms were killing them.
24:03But prior to that
24:042-1 loss yesterday,
24:05they had actually won
24:06five straight,
24:07I believe,
24:08on the road.
24:09And when they score,
24:11they score a lot here.
24:13So Mitchell Parker
24:14is coming off a game
24:15in which he got
24:16absolutely destroyed
24:17by the Brewers.
24:19The Nats have allowed
24:1954 runs
24:21in four games
24:23previous to yesterday.
24:24If you had the run yesterday,
24:26that's 55 runs
24:27in five games.
24:28Like,
24:29you've got to be kidding me.
24:30Lopez has been really good
24:32sneakily
24:33for the Athletics here.
24:35Call me crazy.
24:36The Athletics all day long
24:37here in every way,
24:38shape,
24:39or form over the Nats.
24:41Yeah,
24:41one of those games
24:41where I needed the A's
24:42to get the three runs yesterday,
24:43I said,
24:43ooh,
24:44this is good.
24:44One to one,
24:45bottom of the ninth inning,
24:46we'll just head to extra innings.
24:47You can pick up
24:47a couple runs there.
24:48And of course,
24:48Washington got the leadoff
24:50double yesterday
24:51and then a single
24:51to left field
24:52with one out,
24:53which drove in the winning run.
24:54And away you go into today.
24:55But a quick turnaround
24:56for those two also.
24:57But the Athletics,
24:58I do think,
24:58handled their business today
24:59and do get some base hits.
25:00So four games today,
25:02one starting at 12.05,
25:03one starting at 4.10,
25:04one starting at 6.40
25:05and 7.15.
25:06And then also preseason
25:07NFL football action
25:09on the docket tonight,
25:10which leads us right into Friday,

25:14But the one thing
25:15we talk about a lot too,
25:15Joe, is like the have
25:16and the have-nots.
25:17If you look at the four games today,
25:19one is the haves.
25:20It's Seattle.
25:20One is the have-nots
25:21going up against them.
25:22It's the White Sox.
25:23We're talking about
25:23a minus 300 or so price
25:26at that point.
25:26The other games though,
25:27Paul Skeen's on the mound,
25:28minus 178 to minus 180.
25:30The other two,
25:30really coin flips
25:31between Miami, Atlanta
25:32and the Athletics
25:33and the Washington Nationals.
25:34Good card.

25:58on the baseball diamond today.
26:00Last game on the card tonight,
26:017-15.
26:02That's the Miami Marlins
26:03and the Atlanta Braves.
26:04Jury Perez is on the mound.
26:05He's better than Carlos Carrasco.
26:06Carrasco has struggled
26:07in Major League Baseball
26:08just trying to fight his way back.
26:10This is a dead team
26:10walking in the Atlanta Braves
26:12and have a lineup today
26:13that should be able
26:13to hit Cookie Carrasco,
26:15which includes Kyle Stowers.
26:16His last 68 at-bats
26:17against right-handed pitching.
26:18How about a 509 ISO
26:19and a weighted on-base
26:20percentage of 563?
26:22Let's keep it simple tonight.
26:23Atlanta is fading.
26:24The Marlins still trying
26:25to play with some energy
26:26down the stretch.
26:27I'm getting a cheap line here.
26:28Minus 118 price
26:30on those Miami Marlins
26:31to knock off the Atlanta Braves
26:32tonight at 7-15.
