00:00The newspapers say that. He's famous and how people treat you like you're famous. They start saying weird things to
00:03you.
00:04Strangest things people would say to me. Trevor! Trevor!
00:06Well done on everything, eh? Congrats, congrats.
00:09But, uh, you know, even though you're going to America, don't forget us, all right?
00:13Don't you forget us!
00:15I don't even know who you are.
00:19People would say the weirdest things to me. You know what the number one thing people have said to me?
00:22Number one thing? It's not good luck. It's, uh,
00:24Hey, Trevor, good luck over there, but whatever you do,
00:28don't forget your accent, all right?
00:30Yeah, please, eh, don't pull a charlise on us, okay?
00:33You keep your accent, man. Make us proud.
00:37Everyone said that.
00:38Trevor, brah! Eh, Trevor Noah!
00:40Eh, Massa Khan! Eh, man, you're making us proud, no?
00:43Yeah, man, you're doing big things for us, but I can ask you a favor, no?
00:46Don't lose your accent, no?
00:48Don't lose your accent.
00:50Yeah, when you come back from the stage, man, come back talking funny, okay?
00:53Please, brother, if you lose your accent, don't come back.
00:58You just threatened me?
01:01What does that mean, if you lose your accent?
01:03How do you lose your accent?
01:05People make it sound like you're going to be walking down the street,
01:07and then just out of the blue, you'll be like,
01:09huh?
01:12My accent!
01:15My accent!
01:15I lost my accent!
01:17Why the hell is my...
01:18Oh, oh, oh, oh, no.
01:20Well, hello?
01:21No, I don't lose my accent!
01:23Not my...
01:24How are you going to lose your accent?
01:29I was stressed now.
01:31Because I don't want South Africans to think I'm not South African.
01:34I don't want them to think I've forgotten something.
01:36This is my home.
01:36Now I'm stressed coming home.
01:38I'm in the plane, flying back to Johannesburg,
01:41and the whole time I'm just thinking,
01:42Don't lose your accent, Trevor.
01:43Don't lose your accent.
01:44Don't lose your...
01:45Accent.
01:46Don't...
01:46Accent.
01:47Accent.
01:47Is that how I say accent?
01:48Accent.
01:49Accent.
01:50Accent.
01:51Accent.
01:52Accent.
01:53Accent.
01:53Accent.
01:54Accent.
01:55Accent.
01:55Accent.
01:56By the time I landed at OR Tampa,
01:58I was losing my mind.
01:59I, like, walked in arrivals.
02:01The woman was there at customs.
02:02Welcome back to South Africa, sir.
02:04I was like, yes, I'm back.
02:07Same old Trevor.
02:10Nothing changed.
02:13Going crazy.
02:14Because I love accents.
02:16I really do.
02:16I love accents.
02:17I like learning languages,
02:18and so obviously accents are a byproduct of that.
02:20I've learned over time,
02:22even if you can't learn a language,
02:23an accent is a great way to communicate with somebody in your own language
02:26whilst trying to bridge the gap.
02:27You know, you learn somebody's accent,
02:28you communicate more effectively.
02:30The thing is, though,
02:31you have to learn the accent in the right way.
02:33If you're going to speak to someone in their accent
02:34and you do it in the wrong way,
02:36you might come across as racist.
02:38You've got to be very careful about this.
02:40White people in South Africa often fall into this trap.
02:43Yeah.
02:44It happens at petrol stations quite a bit.
02:48See people driving in with their friends,
02:50talking normally, sitting in the car.
02:52You know, so, I mean, if we get all the numbers together,
02:54marketing should be behind this.
02:55It should be a breeze.
02:56You know, HR's stepped up,
02:58and it's going to be a great year.
03:00And look, we try and make sure that it...
03:01Oh, sorry.
03:01Hold on.
03:03Hello, Baba.
03:06Hey, shop shop, man.
03:08Please put la po full tanky.
03:11Hey?
03:1195.
03:13Unleaded.
03:14Yeah.
03:14Also, check our tyres.
03:16Hey?
03:17Pressure.
03:17Pumpy, pumpy.
03:18Not too much.
03:19Hey?
03:202.2.
03:21Okay?
03:22Yeah.
03:22Good jobby.
03:23Yeah.
03:24Sharp, sharp.
03:25Thank you, boss.
03:30Don't do that.
03:33He's a grown man.
03:34He's been pouring petrol his entire life.
03:37He knows what you need.
03:39Just talk to him like a normal human being.
03:42That's a thing people don't understand.
03:43Just speak to him like a normal human being.
03:45I used to get so angry.
03:47Whenever I see white people changing their accent when they talk to black people, I get
03:50so angry.
03:51It's like, oh, white people racist?
03:52Is that what it is?
03:53Oh, racist?
03:54And then I learned.
03:55I learned.
03:55Life taught me not to be so quick to judge.
03:58Yeah.
03:58I learned a valuable lesson.
03:59I was driving to Gold Reef City one day into the backstage area.
04:03And the security guard came out to the boom.
04:05And he was like, hey, how are you, say?
04:06Is your name on the list?
04:07I said, yes.
04:07How are you, Baba?
04:08My name is Trevor.
04:09He's like, okay.
04:10Chabal.
04:11Chabal.
04:12Chabal.
04:12Chabal.
04:12I said, no, no, no, no.
04:13Trevor.
04:14He's like, oh, sorry.
04:14He he he.
04:15Chabal.
04:16Chabal.
04:17Chabal, chabal, chabal.
04:18I said, no.
04:19Trevor.
04:20Chopal.
04:22Trevor.
04:23Trevor.
04:26Trevor, Trevor, Trevor, Trevor Trevor, Trevor Trevor, Trevor Trevor ha have
04:37shabbat man shabbat shabbat shabbat shabbat shabbat shabbat shabbat shabbat shabbat shabbat shabbat
04:44and now my friend who was irritated he just leans over me and he's like hey papa get
04:47Trevor, he was like, oh, Trevor, why you don't talk properly?
04:59And then I understood, I understood, I finally understood what white people have been trying to do.
05:04I see, you're trying to communicate more effectively, you're trying to engage somebody,
05:07but understand this, understand this, when speaking to somebody in an accent,
05:11the number one rule to understand is an accent is not a measurement of intelligence, right?
05:15An accent is just somebody speaking your language with the rules of theirs, that's all an accent is.
05:20So don't speak down to them, don't patronize them, speak to them the way you would to yourself,
05:25just try and learn their accent, that's all it is, it's just another accent, yeah.
05:28And I learn them, I learn them, I spend all my time learning accents, I try.
05:33I try, I love it.
05:36I learn in restaurants, that's a safe place to start, you know, you learn, you read off the menu,
05:40you try and pronounce the words correctly.
05:42I was inspired by French restaurants, funny enough.
05:45Whenever I'd go to a French restaurant, I was always fascinated by the fact that people would order food in
05:50a French accent,
05:51I never understood why.
05:53Because they don't do it in any other restaurants, only in French restaurants do people walk in
05:57and then change their accent when they order, and they come in talking normally.
06:00Yeah, you know, it's a wonderful thing, you're really going to enjoy it, it's so beautiful, yeah, stunning,
06:04you have to have other dessert.
06:05Oh, good evening, how are you, sir?
06:06Yes, we'll have a bottle of water for the table, please.
06:08And let's start off with, could we get the Sauvignon Blanc, please?
06:13Yes, and you know what, we definitely, for Maine, are going to have the Filet Mignon.
06:18And for dessert, we're going to go with the Crème Brûlée.
06:21Thank you very much, thank you.
06:23Oh, you're going to love it.
06:24I'm like, why are you doing that?
06:25I never understood.
06:26I was like, why?
06:27Because it's not like the French are going to return the favor.
06:30There's no French people sitting in our restaurants in South Africa looking at the menu like,
06:36So, for the table, we can order some stutter portion, we share something, no?
06:42Okay.
06:43Could we please have one serving of the bourreau horse?
06:54That's not going to happen.
