03:08They are looking at me now.
03:10They want to come back and do it again.
03:19And in his last outing, Hearns added title number five.
03:30Hearns came back again, winning two more titles in one night to give him five as well.
03:42And so the rematch was born, a rematch Leonard never expected and Hearns could only hope
03:49for.
03:51But these boxers have imagined after Leonard Hearns won, that it would be eight years
03:56before they would meet again.
04:05For Thomas Hearns, it's a chance at revenge.
04:08For Sugar Ray Leonard, the goal is greater glory.
04:21Brought to you exclusively by D-Base 4, the world's leading PC database software from Ashton
04:27Tate.
04:33Hello, everybody.
04:34I'm Jim Hill, and we are absolutely delighted that you've decided to spend the next three
04:38hours with us because we really feel we have an exciting boxing show for you.
04:42Now, it's really hard to believe, but in the same location just about eight years ago, Sugar
04:46Ray Leonard was behind on points.
04:48But amazingly, dramatically, he scored a 14th round TKO over Tommy Hearns for then the undisputed
04:54welterweight boxing championship of the world.
04:56Now, since then, Sugar Ray has been in and out of retirement some three times with only
05:00four fights, while Hearns has had 16.
05:02It's been a long time coming, but they're going at it again.
05:05It's been a heck of a lot wealthier, a little heavier, a little older, but most importantly,
05:10a little wiser.
05:11Time now to go to ringside to the man who will call all the action and the blow by blows
05:15for this evening, Mr.
05:16Tim Ryan.
05:16Tim.
05:17Well, thank you, Jim.
05:18And who could have imagined that nearly eight years later, we'd actually see this rematch.
05:23One has to wonder what it is that drives these two accomplished boxers, apart from the
05:27monetary game, to be here at all tonight in Las Vegas.
05:30Well, of course, many fans are sympathetic with the eight year quest of Tommy Hearns to
05:35wipe out that defeat suffered at the hands of Ray Leonard, a fight many thought he should
05:40have won.
05:40And others, of course, interested to see whether Sugar Ray can continue his implausible comeback
05:45with yet another victory.
05:46Well, here covering the match with me, my CBS colleague, Gil Clancy, along with the former
05:52middleweight champion of the world, Marvin Hagler.
05:54And perhaps we'll find out some of these answers tonight as to why these guys are in here at
05:59all in 100 degree temperatures.
06:01Well, Gil, first of all, you've got a guy in Tommy Hearns who has won five different world
06:05titles.
06:05But when you talk to him, he says he'd give them all up to win this fight tonight.
06:08And, you know, he really means it, Tim.
06:10Those other titles, so many different split titles, they don't really mean that much.
06:14Tommy's been fighting the past eight years with the shadow of Sugar Ray Leonard always
06:19there.
06:19This is his chance for redemption.
06:21It's going to motivate him quite a lot in this fight.
06:23Well, and tonight he also boxes on this big night under the shadow of the involvement
06:28of his brother Henry in the murder of a young woman Saturday night in Detroit, a tremendous
06:33emotional burden for Thomas Hearns to carry into the fight tonight.
06:36In your long boxing career, can you remember anything quite like that?
06:39Well, yes, Tim.
06:40When I had Rodrigo Valdez fight Monzon in Monte Carlo in 1975, two days before the fight,
06:46his brother was killed in Colombia.
06:47He managed to go through with the fight.
06:50Didn't hurt his performance at all.
06:52Fought a real good fight, close fight with Monzon.
06:54Flew back to Colombia immediately after the fight.
06:57Didn't even wait to collect his money, but he did fight a good fight that night.
07:01Marvin Hagler, I'm sure in your long experience, some things you've had to think about outside
07:06the ring.
07:06Anything to match the emotional burden that Tommy has tonight?
07:09Sure.
07:09The same thing kind of happened to me about a week just before my fight prior with Sugar Ray Leonard.
07:14My mother-in-law had died.
07:16But, you know, you've got to get too close to a big major fight.
07:19And as you know, the fight with Leonard and myself were the fight of the century.
07:22And you really have to just put your mind, take all that kind of doubt away from it,
07:26and just go in there and just fight your fight.
07:28Nobody knows Sugar Ray Leonard, the boxer, better than you do.
07:31What drives him to be here tonight?
07:33Well, I think that, you know, behind the controversy with the fight that we had,
07:36I think you need a big-name fighter somewhere similar to Thomas Hearns.
07:41The Donny DeLon really didn't do anything justice for him.
07:44I think this is the fight that's going to put him where he wants to be again.
07:47All right, Marvin.
07:48Well, tonight, of course, this fight going all over the world.
07:51And it will be seen literally as far away as China.
07:55Now, there is a great Spanish-speaking population watching in many countries around the world.
08:00And tonight they will be watching a simulcast, a Spanish-speaking broadcast,
08:05which will include the English interviews conducted by yours truly,
08:08mainly because I don't speak Spanish.
08:10But during the course of the boxing commentary,
08:12they'll be treated to the special expertise of none other than Roberto Duran.
08:16And he will be one of the special commentators on the Spanish simulcast of tonight's fight.
08:22And old Roberto just won't go away.
08:24I think he's planning on hanging around and maybe meeting the winner of this match.
08:28Perhaps we'll know more about that before the evening is over.
08:31And so, we're about ready for boxing here in 100-degree temperatures in Las Vegas.
08:36Let's go back up to our host location, Jim Hill and Al Bernstein.
08:40All right, Tim, thank you very much.
08:42And as Tim just mentioned, Al Bernstein is with him.
08:44And I'm just absolutely delighted and happy to be working with ESPN's boxing expert.
08:48And I don't care what anyone says, there's absolutely nothing like being around a championship boxing match.
08:53The heat this generates, not the normal heat today, is amazing.
08:58And the atmosphere here is charged.
09:00The people here and, of course, the people watching all over the world.
09:03There's no place you'd want to be other than here tonight because this should be a very special evening.
09:08Now, we all know about the main event tonight, but Al, we need to talk about the undercard
09:12because there are some Olympians on the undercard that want to use this night as a springboard to their professional
09:16careers.
09:17Well, if Tommy Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard are the present and maybe the past of boxing, these young men
09:21could be the future.
09:22Michael Carbajal, the silver medalist in the Olympic Games, taking on Eduardo Nunez.
09:26He's a very talented young man who's undefeated, 4-0 as a professional.
09:30Then, the youngster who won the bantamweight gold medal in the Olympics, Kennedy McKinney out of the Army now, 3
09:36-0 as a pro,
09:37trained by Ken Adams and Hank Johnson.
09:38The Olympic coaches takes on David Moreno.
09:41You'll like him. He is a very skilled boxer.
09:43And the gentleman from Kenya, Robert Kidwang-Giller, who won the Olympic medal in the welterweight division,
09:50was not senior in the United States on television.
09:52He is 3-0. He faces a very tough test against Buck Smith.
09:56Robert may have some proving to do tonight against Smith.
09:59And Andrew Maynard, the young man who is under the tutelage of Sugar Ray Leonard, has an infectious smile and
10:05a terrific right hand.
10:06He's 4-0 as a pro. He won the light heavyweight gold medal.
10:09He'll take on cowboy Steve Schwan.
10:11And then, the youngster that they are touting, at least, as a potential opponent for Mike Tyson.
10:17He won the heavyweight gold medal in the Olympics.
10:19Ray Mercer gets probably his toughest test tonight against Ken Crosby.
10:23Well, Al, you're absolutely correct. This promises to be one heck of an evening.
10:26But first up, first up, we have Carver Hall and Nunez.
10:29So, right now, let's go back to ringside, and once again, Tim Ryan.
10:32Tim.
10:33All right, Jim, here at ringside, the temperature literally on the ring mat at this moment,
10:38with the sun directly on a big thermometer, 120 degrees.
10:41It could be higher than that. That's as high as our thermometer goes.
10:44Young Michael Carver Hall, the silver medalist from Seoul,
10:48fighting out of Phoenix, Arizona, takes on Eduardo Nunez,
10:51and they each came in at 109 pounds.
10:54Nunez, the more experienced, a record of 17 and 4.
10:57Carver Hall on his fifth professional bout.
10:59And he has proven that he has punching power as a pro.
11:02Three knockouts in his four victories.
11:05We see the tail of the tape.
11:07And the scoring will be under the Nevada state rules.
11:11Ten point must system. No standing eight count.
11:13Three judges will score the fight.
11:14Paul Smith, Cindy Barton, and Dave Moretti.
11:17Three knockdown rule is in effect, meaning if there are three knockdowns in a round,
11:20then the fight is over.
11:22He can be saved by the bell only in the final round.
11:24Referee for the bout will be Carlos Padilla.
11:28It is scheduled for six, and let's go up now to our ring announcer, Michael Buffer.
11:32And welcome to Caesars Palace here in Las Vegas, Nevada.
11:35Tonight, top-ranked incorporated and the undisputed, undefeated king of beers,
11:39Budweiser, presents professional boxing for your entertainment.
11:42These bouts are sanctioned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission,
11:45Chairman Dr. Elias Ghanem, Commissioners Dwayne Ford, Dr. James Nave,
11:49Dreddy Little and Jay Native Executive Director Chuck Meeker.
11:52The judges alternating for the undercard will be Chuck Jampa, Bill Graham,
11:56Cindy Barton-Hunter, Dave Moretti, and Paul Smith.
12:00The timekeepers are Al Bicek, Mike Lachella, and Mike Marvito.
12:04Physicians at ringside, chief physician, Dr. Donald Romeo.
12:07Also in attendance, Dr. Flip Womanski and Dr. James Wishgame.
12:12And now, ladies and gentlemen, this is the first bout of the evening.
12:17Scheduled for six rounds, it's in the light flyweight division.
12:20The referee for this contest is Carlos Padilla.
12:24Introducing first fighting out of the blue corner.
12:27He weighs 109 pounds, wearing the silver trunks.
12:30He's from Tijuana, Mexico.
12:33As a professional, an excellent record of 17 and 4 with 5 KOs.
12:37Ladies and gentlemen, Eduardo Nunez.
12:45And introducing him to the red corner.
12:47Wearing the white trunks with red letters.
12:49He weighs an even 109 pounds also.
12:52From Phoenix, Arizona.
12:54Undefeated as a professional record of 4 and 0, 3 KOs.
12:58He's the silver medal winner from the 1988 Olympics.
13:02Ladies and gentlemen, Michael Liptofisto-Vermaha.
13:15Carval.
13:17Carval Nunez.
13:19You're going to box for six rounds.
13:21You were already giving instructions in your respective dressing room.
13:25Any questions?
13:26Okay.
13:30You heard Carlos Padilla with the final instructions.
13:34And we'd also like to welcome in our television audience tonight,
13:38over in Great Britain, Sky Channel, carrying this fight card live
13:42and listening to our commentary.
13:44And it's a pleasure to be speaking to our many British friends,
13:46Tim Ryan, Gil Clancy, and marvelous Marvin Hagler.
13:49Michael Carvajal in the white trunks.
13:51Eduardo Nunez in gold, 109 pounds each.
13:54First bout of the evening.
13:55Tim, not only is Carvajal fighting a more experienced guy,
13:58but he's fighting a southpaw in the bargain.
14:01And Marvin, you know about those southpaws.
14:03They're terrible.
14:05Well, they're not terrible.
14:06They're difficult.
14:07Well, whatever you want.
14:09They could be good, too, you know.
14:11Eduardo Nunez, 24 years of age from Tijuana,
14:14now lives in San Diego.
14:1517 and four with five knockouts,
14:17so he would not appear to be a big puncher.
14:19But in talking to him this morning at the weigh-in,
14:21showed no fear of Carvajal,
14:23despite Michael's three knockouts in his four pro bouts.
14:26He says he's a good stand-up guy,
14:28and I think I can out-box him.
14:30Tim, already I've seen a nice right uppercut
14:34that this Carvajal throws.
14:35And you know by fighting a southpaw,
14:37you need to throw the right-hand leads.
14:40You know, Carvajal said that he likes the slower pace of the pros,
14:44who's not having to go out there and tap-tap to pile up the points
14:46as he did in the amateurs.
14:47He likes to be able to set up the punches.
14:49And, of course, he's got knockout power,
14:51so he's learning that quickly in the pros.
14:52Well, you can see him stalking Nunez, Tim.
14:55He's a flat-footed fighter, so he can't punch.
14:57And, you know, he looks so much.
14:58They're both 109 pounds.
14:59He looks so much bigger and stronger than Nunez.
15:02Maybe 60 pounds after this fight.
15:04Maybe after this round.
15:05After this round.
15:07Round one scheduled for six beginning the evening
15:10that will culminate in the war between Hearns and Leonard.
15:14And, you know, Tim, the heat really is the story.
15:17Our thermometer stopped at 120 degrees.
15:19I'd wager there's at least 130 now
15:20because the thermometer went way past 120 miles.
15:23So it can really affect these kids, especially the Olympic kids
15:27that have never, don't have any experience in boxing more than four months.
15:31This is the first six-round fight with Point Guild for Carvajal
15:34and the other Olympians that you will see on the card tonight.
15:37I think it's going to be an early knockout.
15:39Carvajal looks too confident, knows just what he's going to do on there.
15:42And he knows he's fighting the southpaw and he's got to put the pressure on him.
15:45Early prediction from marvelous Marvin Hagler
15:48watching Michael Carvajal stalking his man Nunez.
15:52You know what?
15:53I'm already writing all this stuff down in case I ever have a guy fight a southpaw.
15:57Now, Marvin, the first thing he said,
15:58you have to put pressure on southpaws.
16:00Okay, that's one point.
16:02There's a combination scored by Carvajal.
16:05His first two-fisted combination.
16:07It had some effect.
16:10Nunez keeping the distance.
16:13You know, in the first—excuse me, I'm sorry.
16:15In the first round, you know, they need to fill each other out.
16:18Right hand by Carvajal and uppercut.
16:20And there's that uppercut that Marvin pointed out.
16:23Which short uppercut and he followed it with a left hook.
16:26Because this guy keeps bending down and he's looking for that uppercut all the time.
16:31He's vulnerable for it.
16:33Final seconds of round number one.
16:35Michael Carvajal in white.
16:37Eduardo Nunez in the silver trunks.
16:45Now they're looking at Michael Carvajal.
16:47His brother Danny is his manager and trainer in the corner just above us.
17:08You can see the busier man was Michael Carvajal,
17:16going to punch that and what you viewed yourself.
17:24And just going back into some of action in round one,
17:27you see that effective uppercut that Marvin picked up on one of the good-looking punches of young Michael Carvajal.
17:33To me, in this fight, I believe that's his key punch.
17:40Round number two, scheduled for six.
17:42Michael Carvajal in white.
17:43Eduardo Nunez from San Diego, but a Mexican native of Tijuana,
17:47in the silver trunks.
17:52I'm quite sure on the amateur.
17:54You know, he must have fought with plenty of southpaws
17:56because he looks too much knowledge that he knows exactly what they're doing there.
17:59Carvajal looks like he's looking for that uppercut,
18:03and he's going to shoot the right hand.
18:04He wants to get this guy against the ropes.
18:16He just looks so much bigger and stronger than Nunez Carvajal does.
18:20He just looks a little worried.
18:21I think he knows that he's in a tough fight.
18:24But because he's running a lot,
18:26and these guys here, Julian, they throw more punches than anybody,
18:29you know, by that kind of weight category.
18:31But the heat factor, I think,
18:32has taken its toll on these guys a little bit.
18:36There's that uppercut again, Marvin.
18:37There's that uppercut.
18:38They've got to come back with the hook.
18:39You know, he shoot.
18:40Oh, good right hook by Nunez.
18:43But you can't stop on a punch like that.
18:45You've got to continue it up.
18:52Carvajal trying to find that range,
18:54and now moves into the left of the body.
18:58You can hear his brother Danny in the corner saying,
19:01when he leans in, unloads.
19:02And there's a right and a left of the body,
19:04and Carvajal a good flurry now,
19:05working the body of Nunez here in round two.
19:08Look to me, kind of shook him up a little bit.
19:10Carvajal shook him up a little bit.
19:13This is the wrong place for him to be.
19:15The body shots are taking his tolls on Nunez.
19:17Two short chomping rights back from Nunez.
19:20Carvajal, as you say, putting the pressure on the body, Marvin.
19:24The uppercut again from Carvajal.
19:27You notice, Sumi, you notice that in the heat,
19:29these guys cannot move that much.
19:32You're slowing down a lot now.
19:35Right hand lead scored by Carvajal.
19:40Nunez using all of the real estate now here on the second round
19:43as we go under a minute to go,
19:46Carvajal continues to try and keep his target in front of him.
19:49Carvajal is doing just what Marvin Hagler said,
19:52keeping the pressure on the southpaw.
19:54Make a move.
19:55The heat would take a factor on him.
19:58Like to keep him moving.
20:00Left hand lead,
20:02a hook thrown by Carvajal at scored.
20:05Now taking him back to the body.
20:10You know, Tom, both of these fighters are all nice and loose
20:13because they're sweaty and, you know,
20:14to come out to start nice and fresh like you need a good sweat.
20:18Combination scored inside by Carvajal.
20:20Again, we saw the little chopping uppercut.
20:23This is with a right hand now bangs to the arms.
20:28Nunez missing as he tried to counter punch.
20:31Coming to the end of round number two.
20:34Nunez has a bad mistake.
20:35When he gets hit with a good punch when he's down low,
20:37he picks his head back up out of there.
20:38And that's where Carvajal catches him with a good shot.
20:42In the round two,
20:44following Michael Carvajal,
20:45the Olympic silver medalist from 1988,
20:48Phoenix, Arizona.
20:51And then, Michael,
20:58he's got his face right here, right?
20:59And once he gets that face right there,
21:01go with the short right here,
21:02go with the body,
21:04move to the side,
21:05and double the hook, okay?
21:07Do some more.
21:15Brother Danny is saying keep the pressure on him.
21:17Well, there'll be pressure aplenty.
21:18in the game.
21:19Later on in our telecast it'll be
21:21sure to Ray Leonard Thomas Hearns
21:22to coming up.
21:25Following a look at these
21:27outstanding young Olympians.
21:29One from Nairobi Kenya that's
21:31Robert.
21:35And you see Miguel Felix Pedro
21:37Moran in the corner of Eduardo
21:38Nunez try to pump their man up
21:39here as we head into round three.
21:42We've got Carvajal ahead comfortably
21:43through the first.
21:48I like this Carvajal style.
21:50You know he's taking his time and
21:51like you said that's what he
21:52learned by being a professional
21:54now.
21:55Pace is a little slower.
21:56So you want to be able to put your
21:57punches together a little better
21:58and more accurately.
21:59That's right.
22:00I like the way he puts them
22:01together more.
22:01If he hits you with one comes back
22:03with that left hook throws that
22:04right hand underneath left hook
22:06back up on the chin.
22:07There's the right hand back with
22:08the left hook.
22:08Exactly.
22:09Well schooled fighter.
22:10When he's in tight kill you know
22:11he's using nice body shots.
22:12That's what's slowing his opponent
22:14down.
22:22You have to give this Nunez a lot
22:24of credit though.
22:25He's trying his best out there.
22:27He's punching back nice short
22:29punches inside.
22:30But he just isn't as strong as
22:32Michael Carvajal.
22:35You know one thing I've noticed
22:37here from Michael is something we
22:38noticed when he was an amateur
22:39we were covering him during the
22:40Pan-American games.
22:41He has excellent concentration.
22:43Keeps his eye on his target at
22:44all times.
22:47And he's an accurate puncher as a
22:49result.
22:49And Tim he's always come on late
22:51in fights.
22:53Slow started and comes on late in
22:55fights.
22:55Starting to connect with the jab here
22:57in round three.
22:58I would tell you I was actually
23:00coming to use his right hand a
23:01lot more now.
23:02Straight hand.
23:06He's cocking it.
23:07He's cocking the right hand to
23:08shoot it.
23:09And that's the perfect shot that
23:11you know Gil against the southpaw.
23:13Listen I never had my guys fight
23:15too many southpaws.
23:16You know about that.
23:17Because you always won the fight
23:18Rodrigo Valdez when he was the
23:20champion.
23:21And somehow you just never got the
23:23shot.
23:24I always wanted to.
23:35Carvajal leaning on Nunez now.
23:38Trying to keep him in position in
23:40front of him.
23:41Ropes behind him.
23:42Banging away to that body.
23:44Real heavy body punches by
23:45Carvajal.
23:46Oh he's a lot stronger.
23:47You can see Carvajal is a lot
23:48stronger than his opponent.
23:51Another good solid left of the
23:52body.
23:55Main thing is trying to watch the
23:56low blows in there.
23:58Well now again.
23:59If I was in Carvajal's corner
24:01I'd be worried about the head.
24:02He's winning the fight pretty
24:03good.
24:04And when they're inside like that
24:05they're banging heads together
24:06pretty good.
24:07But as you know his corner was
24:08telling Carvajal to get his head
24:10underneath him.
24:11Good straight right hand by
24:12Carvajal.
24:13A lot of smack in there.
24:15It was smack punch.
24:17It wasn't solid punch.
24:19What kind of punch was that.
24:20That was a smack punch.
24:22You mean like you say I'll
24:23smack you one.
24:24It's a left of the year from
24:27Carvajal it spins Nunez away.
24:30Final seconds round number
24:32three.
24:36Right hand lead lands again.
24:45The little hands of stone they
24:47call him.
24:48And the real big hands of stone
24:50sitting behind us in the
24:51Spanish language commentary
24:53position.
24:54Right.
24:54I thought you said you couldn't
24:55speak Spanish.
24:57Well I have limited use I can
24:59order in a restaurant you know.
25:00That's about it.
25:01In a Spanish.
25:03You can see Michael Carvajal as we
25:06take a look at our Ashton Tate
25:07punch stats been consistently busy
25:10231 punches and the needle of
25:14pushing 120 degrees here as it's
25:18cooled off.
25:18Yeah by about a degree.
25:20I don't know how you guys take
25:22that hair.
25:26What was that.
25:27I don't know how you guys can
25:28take that hair.
25:30I never thought of that as a
25:31good way to cool off.
25:32But that's why you shaved your
25:33head all these years.
25:35Now the public knows.
25:36Listen we don't want to talk
25:38about that subject.
25:39Get on to something else.
25:42Round number four Michael
25:43Carvajal Olympic silver medalist
25:45and Eduardo Nunez light flyweight
25:48to the top out scheduled for six.
25:50Carvajal and white.
25:51Nunez and silver.
25:56Still to come you'll be seeing.
25:59Four more of the Olympian stars
26:02of 1988.
26:04And then the main event.
26:05Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas
26:06Hearns.
26:07WBC super middleweight
26:09championship.
26:14Can lead by Nunez got through
26:16but showed no effect.
26:19Carvajal.
26:20With Nunez it's a little too
26:22little too late.
26:23He's not as busy as Carvajal.
26:25He doesn't punch as odd as
26:26Carvajal.
26:27Very very difficult for him to get
26:29into this fight.
26:30Or to win the fight.
26:31Well to me Gil he looks a little
26:32confused.
26:33He don't know which punches to use
26:34because every punch that he
26:35throws.
26:36Carvajal comes back with a
26:37different combination.
26:42And he's into the fight with
26:44twenty one professional about
26:45seventy four his record.
26:49The first professional fight for
26:50Carvajal.
26:52There's a good left hook by
26:54Carvajal.
26:55End of the three punch combination.
26:59You know once in a while New
27:00years to come with a good punch.
27:03Carvajal.
27:04And you know you gotta start
27:04watching this kid a little bit
27:05because Carvajal can't get too
27:09too relaxed out there.
27:11He just looks so much stronger
27:12than Nunez though Mark.
27:14All right.
27:15Yeah but you know soon your
27:16opponent gets relaxed that's
27:17when mistakes happen.
27:18You get careless.
27:20Well that's up to the
27:21corner men to keep him alert.
27:22Keep him going.
27:23Low blow from the left hand
27:25of Carvajal to the hip of
27:26Nunez.
27:27No warning from Carlos
27:29video.
27:29Good combination.
27:30That rocked him.
27:31Best combination thrown by
27:33Carvajal.
27:35Well very seldom does Carvajal
27:37throw one punch.
27:37He puts them together pretty
27:38good.
27:40Under a minute to go.
27:41The fourth round scheduled
27:42for six.
27:48You mentioned these fights being
27:50seen all around the world
27:52tonight and a huge press
27:53contingent more than a thousand
27:55writers here.
27:56Many of them from foreign
27:58countries.
27:58A big right hand by Carvajal
28:00rocks Nunez.
28:03Carvajal pouring it on bangs
28:05to the body now brings that
28:06uppercut again.
28:07You know he's got to make sure
28:09he knows what he's doing.
28:10If he's got to be in there or
28:11he's got to be out.
28:12He's confused.
28:14He can't do anything that's
28:16being effective to this
28:17Carvajal.
28:18Can't do anything to him.
28:19One thing I did like about
28:20Nunez when he got hit with
28:21those good solid punches he
28:23punched back.
28:25Slowed Carvajal down a little
28:26bit.
28:26Well you know Gil your best
28:27offense is your best defense.
28:29Your best defense is your best
28:30offense.
28:32Final seconds of the fourth
28:33round.
28:34Another right hand.
28:34He's wobbled now Tim.
28:35He's in trouble.
28:36Nunez another right hand.
28:37Down he goes.
28:39A big right hand.
28:41The one that straightened him
28:43up and then a second one sent
28:45him to the canvas.
28:46And Padilla stops it.
28:48That's it a knockout in round
28:49number four.
28:50The final seconds of the fourth
28:52round.
28:53The Olympic silver medalist
28:55Michael Carvajal connects with
28:57a big right hand follows it
28:59with another.
28:59And he has won his fifth
29:01professional bout.
29:02And his fourth knockout
29:04victory.
29:05From Phoenix Arizona.
29:07You're going to be hearing a
29:08lot more of this young man.
29:11Michael Carvajal.
29:20Dr. Flip Pomansky in to check
29:23on Eduardo Nunez.
29:25Can you talk to him in Spanish
29:26for us.
29:30Make sure that he's all right.
29:31Carvajal are watching here to
29:33make sure his opponent is OK.
29:36There's the first right hand
29:37that hurt him badly.
29:39And then it's going to come
29:40right back.
29:40Good finish of this kid.
29:43Also what you missed too is a
29:44nice body shot too.
29:46That kind of hurt right to the
29:47ribs.
29:51Waffled against the ropes Tim.
29:52Let's see how Carvajal finishes
29:54him.
29:54Jab hook.
29:55Right hand again.
29:57Down he goes.
30:00So there you have it.
30:01Michael Carvajal is.
30:03Knockout victory is fourth of
30:04his pro careers.
30:05We'll see it one more time.
30:09You know.
30:09They call this kid.
30:11Little hands of stone and he
30:12sure looks that way.
30:13But.
30:14A flyweight of a junior flyweight
30:16he punches pretty good.
30:17Oh you know it.
30:18Good combinations.
30:19What I liked about him.
30:21Just like what Tim said.
30:22I see great things in this kid
30:23here in the future.
30:24I do too.
30:25You know.
30:26In America we just don't seem
30:27to appreciate the light of
30:28weights.
30:29But this kid may change the
30:30public's mind because they
30:31like to see good punches and
30:32action fighters.
30:33And he's certainly an action
30:34fighter.
30:34As you can see there.
30:35And he was in with an
30:36experienced guy.
30:37Guy with 17 wins only four
30:39losses.
30:40And a southpaw to boot.
30:41Yes.
30:42What you understand though.
30:42He didn't have a big.
30:43Excuse me.
30:44He didn't have a big knockout
30:45record though.
30:45And you can see that.
30:47But he's a busy game.
30:48Little fighter.
30:49And Carvajal was just too
30:51physically strong for Nunez.
30:52But again.
30:53You know we said that
30:54Carvajal starts slow and he
30:55gets better as the fight
30:56goes on.
30:57I figured maybe the heat
30:58would bother him.
30:58Let's take a look at the
30:59Ashton Tate punch stat.
31:01Carvajal landed ninety four
31:02punches.
31:03Thirty one percent.
31:04Nunez only forty one punches.
31:06Twenty two percent.
31:13Now let's go up to Tim Ryan
31:14with the winner.
31:16All right Gil.
31:17I'm with Michael Carvajal here
31:18has just scored his fourth
31:19knockout in his young pro
31:21career against a much more
31:23experienced boxer.
31:24You just kept the pressure on
31:25him right from the opening
31:26bell Michael.
31:27Yeah I knew he wasn't going
31:28to be able to stand the heat
31:29and I'm real used to the heat
31:30so you know Danny Danny told
31:32me to keep pressure on him
31:33to go to the body and by the
31:35fifth we figured by the fifth
31:36fourth round that he'll wear
31:37down.
31:37Why would you be more used to
31:39the heat from Phoenix than
31:40he would from Tijuana.
31:41Because I train under a
31:43hundred and fifteen twenty
31:44five degrees on little shock
31:46gym.
31:46It's 10 to 10 shock and it
31:49gets real hot in there.
31:50Well I guess it's a big
31:51asset then.
31:52Now you'll only want to fight
31:53in hot climates as a
31:54professional.
31:55Doesn't always work that way
31:56Michael you'll be Michael
31:57you'll be in some cold
31:58places.
31:59You know I get in real good
32:01condition in the first place
32:02dining gives me real good
32:04condition.
32:04Like I like to say hi to
32:07everybody at the damage
32:08center in Phoenix.
32:09I know my mom my father and
32:10them are there and.
32:11Eduardo Nunez here to
32:12congratulate him.
32:13Nice going Eduardo and Michael
32:15Carbajal.
32:16We'll look forward to many
32:17more exceptional
32:19performances from you.
32:20Everybody believes that
32:21you're going to be a world
32:22champion and I know that's
32:23your goal.
32:23Oh thank you and I will be up
32:24there pretty soon.
32:25Another year.
32:26I'll be there.
32:27Okay.
32:28Michael Carbajal and many of
32:29you seeing him for the first
32:30time you'll see him much more
32:31often.
32:32Let's return you now to Jim
32:33Hill.
32:35All right Tim thank you very
32:36much.
32:36Our Olympians are off to a good
32:38start this evening with me as
32:39a young man.
32:40Michael second to none who is
32:41the IVF middleweight boxing
32:43champion of the world.
32:43And you're kind of like the
32:45odd man out.
32:46You know I ran Barclays here
32:47he's he's bought one of the
32:48participants Roberto Duran is
32:50in.
32:50You're just kind of sitting and
32:51once again waiting your turn.
32:52Oh yeah Jim.
32:53That's all I'm doing.
32:54I'm just taking my time.
32:55You know just being time.
32:56I'm fighting Iron Barclay
32:57August 14.
33:00Until then I just watch Ray
33:01Leonard and Thomas do their
33:02thing.
33:02Hopefully I get the winner
33:03someday.
33:04Now I ran Barclay is an
33:05individual who knocked out
33:06Tommy Hurley's just a few.
33:07Well you know it was last year
33:08when he did that to him.
33:09Well you know I ran Barclay got
33:11a late Christmas present
33:11to beat Thomas Hearn.
33:12Unfortunately that won't
33:13happen when he fight Michael
33:14Nunn in August.
33:15After I beat him I'm looking
33:16forward to fighting one of
33:17the legends.
33:18How difficult is it on you just
33:20having to sit and wait for
33:22someone to come to you.
33:23A lot of people are talking
33:23about maybe one of the legends
33:24really doesn't want to get in
33:25the ring with you.
33:26Well you know it's going to
33:27talk you know going around
33:28these legends don't want to
33:29fight me but I just got to
33:30keep on winning and keep
33:31doing what I got to do and
33:32just keep being victorious
33:34and hopefully one of these
33:34days they'll come out and
33:35give me an opportunity to
33:36fight one of the legends.
33:37All right let's talk about
33:37those legends that are
33:38going to be in the ring
33:39tonight Sugar Ray Leonard
33:39and Thomas Hearns.
33:40Who do you think will win
33:41and why.
33:42I think it's going to be a
33:43very exciting fight between
33:45the two men.
33:45Unfortunately the fight is
33:46happening eight years later
33:48in which it should have
33:49happened but you know that's
33:50the way it goes you know.
33:51I think Ray Leonard will
33:52win the fight.
33:53I think Tommy will come out
33:56and be the dominant force
33:59for the first four rounds
34:00but after that I think we'll
34:01take control and the fight
34:03should be stopped around
34:03the eighth or ninth round.
34:04You know Sugar Ray Leonard
34:05has a great deal of respect
34:06for you.
34:06He calls you a class act and
34:08the best middleweight right
34:09now in the United States.
34:10Well you know I'm overjoyed
34:11when a great father Ray
34:12Leonard says something like
34:13that about me.
34:14It only gives me the
34:14motivating incentive Jim to
34:15work there much harder and
34:17continue to be the best I
34:18can be.
34:18Okay so you think it's going
34:20to be Sugar Ray Leonard in
34:21eight rounds.
34:22Yes I do.
34:23Okay.
34:23Thank you so much for being
34:24with us and Niren Barkley is
34:25going to have his hands for
34:26what he takes on to you.
34:27No doubt about it Joe.
34:28Okay thank you so much.
34:29Good luck.
34:30Thank you Joe.
34:30Okay the IVF middleweight
34:31boxing champion of the world
34:32Michael second to none.
34:33Okay time now for our second
34:35Olympian to take center stage.
34:37His name Kennedy McKinney as he
34:39goes.
