00:0010 sharp, only on Showtime.
00:03The torch has been passed and a new generation of fighters has emerged.
00:07Get the shots off, run away.
00:09With the selfless dedication to the sport that their idols once had.
00:12You had the dream, now let's make it happen.
00:15Tough young scrappers eager to make their name and hungry to make their mark.
00:19Now watch them chase their dreams in the ring.
00:22When undefeated super bantamweight Emmanuel Lucero puts his perfect 17-0 record on the line
00:26against tough veteran John Loewy on Showbox, the new generation.
00:29Next, only on Showtime.
00:37Welcome to the Uncas Pavilion here at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut
00:42for an afternoon of professional boxing.
00:45I'm your ring announcer, Ronnie Duncan.
00:47Ladies and gentlemen, this is Showbox, the new generation.
00:56And nobody gonna give you nothing for nothing.
00:58You gotta work for what you get.
01:02You gotta get them shots off.
01:04Left hook, right hand, both hands up, both hands up.
01:06Go!
01:08Go out of there, focus on the job, and I'll be done.
01:12This is what it takes for me, champ.
01:13This is what it takes, right here, baby.
01:15Opportunity on the 91, let's go!
01:33This week on Showbox, the new generation, we're deep in the scenic woods of New England.
01:38This is the Mohegan Sun Resort and Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.
01:42Summer may be winding down, but inside the ring, we're looking for the action switch to be turned on full
01:49blast.
01:50In our main event, Emmanuel Lucero of the Bronx puts his undefeated record on the line against rugged Irishman John
01:57Lowy
01:57in a 12-round super bantamweight bout.
02:00And we'll start off the card with a couple of hot, young, welterweight prospects.
02:04Kermit Cintron and Saeed Uwali in an eight-round bout between two unbeaten fighters.
02:12Hello again, everybody, and welcome.
02:15I'm Nick Charles with Steve Farhood, and welcome to Showbox, the new generation.
02:19The main event on our card is a blueprint of a familiar boxing refrain.
02:25John Lowy is a former contender approaching middle age.
02:29Emmanuel Lucero is unbeaten, young, rising star.
02:33So what we have, Steve, is a veteran running out of time against a rising star again,
02:39anxious to show the world that nobody can stand up with him.
02:43Nick, for my money, Emmanuel Lucero is exactly what a Showbox main event fighter should be.
02:48What should a Showbox main event fighter be?
02:50Well, he should be young, he should be up and coming, he should be exciting,
02:54and he should be willing to take on his toughest opponent to date.
02:57In John Lowy, Lucero is certainly doing that.
03:00And that is exactly why I'm looking forward to seeing Lucero.
03:04He's 22 years old, 17-0, one of the best prospects in New York,
03:09and fighting the best opponent of his career in Lowy.
03:12So I'm very excited to see Lucero tonight.
03:14As for John Lowy, he's 35 years old now.
03:18There he is.
03:18But before we relegate him to the scrap heap, Steve,
03:21let's not forget what happened on our last Showbox, the new generation card, only two weeks ago,
03:26when 33-year-old John Michael Johnson rubbed out a younger, supposedly stronger Antonio Cello Diaz inside three rounds.
03:35Well, can John Lowy do what John Michael Johnson did just two weeks ago, pull off the big upset?
03:39That remains to be seen.
03:41John Lowy, two of his three losses are against two of the greatest fighters in the history of his division,
03:46Eric Morales and Kennedy McKinney.
03:48He is 35 years old.
03:50Is he coming here as a stepping stone?
03:51Yes.
03:52Does he have the experience to give Lucero a lot of trouble?
03:54Probably yes also.
03:56That's what makes this a very interesting main event.
03:58It does.
03:58Our main event, super bantamweight fight, is just ahead.
04:01Emmanuel Lucero steps up in class against the veteran John Lowy.
04:05But first, our lead-off bout.
04:07About to begin.
04:08A welterweight clash between two young fighters who have never tasted defeat as professionals.
04:13Saeed Owali, a guy with a fascinating background, puts his 7-0 record on the line against Kermit
04:19the Killer Cintron, who's knocked out nine of the ten fighters he's faced.
04:23Cintron will now fight a guy who took a long and winding road to get here today.
04:27Saeed Owali was born in a small town in Morocco, moved to Belgium, had an excellent amateur career
04:33throughout Europe, and has done nothing but win since coming to America and turning pro 16 months ago.
04:38Steve, take us behind his numbers.
04:42Saeed Owali, 7-0, with four knockouts.
04:46Stance advantage, he's a left-hander.
04:48And Cintron has only fought one southpaw so far.
04:51Amateur experience, while Cintron was a world-class amateur wrestler,
04:55Owali was competing in international boxing tournaments.
04:58He's also sparked with a slew of world-class pros.
05:02Finally, jumping class, like Cintron, Owali has been meeting and beating mostly 500 and sub-500 fighters.
05:08This is a jumping class for him, too.
05:10Well, Kermit Cintron has been boxing only a couple of years.
05:13We look at him right now and tell you about him.
05:1621 years old, born in Puerto Rico, moved with his family to Pennsylvania when he was 8.
05:20Cintron turned pro only last October, and in 10 months has needed only 20 rounds to beat the 10 opponents
05:25he's faced so far.
05:26Steve, what's behind the numbers?
05:28Kermit Cintron, you see, just looking at him, he's a big welterweight,
05:31and we know who the knockout puncher in this matchup is.
05:34Cintron, fast starter.
05:36Not only have nine of his 10 bouts been KOs, but six of those nine have been first-round KOs.
05:41He's not much for the feeling-out process.
05:44Limited rounds.
05:44The flip side of Cintron's KO record is a lack of experience.
05:47He's averaged only two rounds per fight, and has been six rounds or more only once.
05:52So tonight he's being asked to go eight rounds.
05:54And weak opposition, most of Cintron's opponents have been inexperienced fighters with losing records.
05:59Owali represents a significant jump in class.
06:02Very little amateur career.
06:03Kermit Cintron's been boxing only two years, but his corner is confident.
06:07It's rapidly all coming together for him.
06:09Both Cintron and his opponent today, Saeed Owali, are about to find out more about themselves as boxers,
06:14as each makes his eight-round debut and puts his perfect record on the line.
06:19So, let's go up to the center of the ring, where Ronnie Duncan has the introductions.
06:24Ladies and gentlemen, we welcome you to the Uncas Pavilion at the Mohegan Sun in the Uncasville,
06:32Connecticut, for an afternoon of professional boxing, brought to you by Main Events and Showtime.
06:40This bout has been sanctioned and approved by the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Commission Athletic Unit.
06:48Jerry Bull is your unit chief.
06:50Your judges for this fight are Frank Lombardi, Melvina Latham, and George Smith.
06:58Your referee for this bout is Dick Flaherty.
07:03This bout is scheduled for the welterweight division, eight rounds.
07:08Introducing first, in the blue corner, wearing the white and blue trunks, weighing in at 147 and one-half pounds,
07:17with a record, outstanding one, seven wins, no losses, and four knockouts.
07:23From Mesquite, Belgium, now fighting out of Morristown, New Jersey,
07:28Saeed Owali!
07:32Owali!
07:34His opponent, in the red corner, wearing the red, white, and blue trunks,
07:39tipping the scale at 144 and one-half pounds.
07:44He, too, is undefeated, with ten wins and nine big knockouts.
07:50From Puerto Rico, now fighting out of Reading, Pennsylvania,
07:55please welcome Kermit Cintron!
07:58Eight rounds in the welterweight division.
08:01Dick Flaherty is your referee.
08:04Okay, guys.
08:06Okay.
08:15Okay, gentlemen, we went over the rules in the dressing room.
08:17There's going to be eight rounds.
08:18We want a good, clean, professional bout.
08:22Okay, trunks are all right.
08:23This may be a little high here.
08:25Okay, be my call on that, okay?
08:27All right, eight rounds.
08:28Touch them up, guys.
08:29Good luck.
08:36And we're seconds away as Dick Flaherty, the referee,
08:40Saoud Owali in the white with blue,
08:43as we see tail of the tape right here,
08:45and take a look at Kermit Cintron on the left.
08:47Steve?
08:48Nothing to choose from between these two guys.
08:50They're both young, undefeated fighters
08:51who are fighting their best competition to date.
08:53Both very tall for their weight.
08:55The big difference, Cintron, the puncher, Owali, less so.
08:58Okay, and rules of the commission here.
09:00Ten-point must system.
09:01Three judges score.
09:02Three knockdown rule is in effect.
09:05No standing eight.
09:05Saved by the bell in the last round only.
09:07The referee or the doctor, though, can stop the fight.
09:10But let's get it started right now.
09:25He's going to go down soon, but break it down.
09:42Owali, the southpaw, moving where he wants him, to his left.
09:47Look at those outside feet, right?
09:48Got a lead foot and see who's on the outside, Steve.
09:51I'm having trouble looking at Cintron's feet
09:52because I haven't gotten past his hair and his head yet.
09:55Well, I don't know if it's going to get messed up or not.
09:57That's the big question.
09:58We'll see.
10:03Definitely slow start here.
10:04See what each guy has.
10:07Owali tries the left.
10:12In most of his fights, Cintron's big punch has been his straight right.
10:15That's what he's gotten those nine KOs with.
10:17That punch tends to work against the southpaw.
10:19Let's see if he tries it.
10:20He should.
10:20In the southpaw, Haseem Tyler, the trainer,
10:23and Howard Davis, the co-trainer, said he's got to jab more, Owali,
10:26but we haven't seen it yet.
10:28Leading with his left at times.
10:31Intent to wait in counters.
10:34Left sails wide by Cintron as he restarts.
10:37Has to pick up his own and eats a left hand.
10:40Owali's a left-hander, but he says his power's in his right.
10:43He's sort of a natural right-hander, but not a converted southpaw.
10:45Exactly.
10:46And his favorite fighter, Marvin Hagler, was the southpaw rarity,
10:49which was a lefty.
10:50His right hand was stronger than his left, so he picked a good idol.
10:53He's saying that a lot of people just underestimate that right,
10:56but look out for it tonight.
10:59Cintron's in red, white, and blue.
11:01Owali's in the blue and white.
11:04Early in the action here.
11:07Uncasfield, Connecticut.
11:09Battle of unbeaten Welderweight prospects.
11:11He saw a lead right by Cintron.
11:13He didn't catch it while he flushed, but it did brush him,
11:17and that's a punch he should use,
11:18because against southpaws, jabs tend not to be that effective.
11:22Well, the big right hand is Cintron's weapon,
11:25although they say he could go low, high, up and right, up and below.
11:29But what trainer doesn't, Steve?
11:31But that's his power punch.
11:32And again, against the southpaw, you know,
11:34they're used to picking off those big shots,
11:36so maybe he should keep it a little shorter.
11:43Inside a minute to go in round one.
11:45Not too much action here.
11:46Two guys who promised to bring it.
11:48Owali told us he's going to take it to him.
11:50Yeah, both guys said they'd back the other guy up.
11:52Neither one really successful yet.
11:54Cintron backing Owali up a little bit,
11:56but not really doing it with punches.
12:00Cintron weaving out of danger there.
12:03As they reset, find their zone,
12:05they're sensing distance and go again.
12:08Uppercut by Owali, doesn't land.
12:10Double jab, misses by Cintron.
12:14Ten seconds to go in round one.
12:17Not too much action.
12:21They come to the end of the first piece.
12:25Let's listen in
12:26in the corners.
12:34That was a good mound.
12:36Good mound.
12:38Don't let him sit.
12:40Do you want this one?
12:41You did.
12:42Don't let him sit.
12:43All right.
12:44Sayid Owali talked to us before the fight
12:46and said this is what he has to do to win.
12:49Jab is actually very important in every fight
12:53because, you know, with your jab,
12:56you know, you measure the distance with your jab.
12:59You look for his weaknesses,
13:01the way he reacts with your jab.
13:03The jab is, you know, you can close the gap,
13:05you know, you know, measure the distance.
13:07I think the jab is one of the most,
13:08you know, the most important thing of boxing.
13:10Yeah, definitely.
13:12Well, wait to see it, aren't we, Steve?
13:14Yeah.
13:15Wait to see a punch land, dude.
13:17Did I have to square that round for somebody?
13:19Well, I'm going to let it slide,
13:20but you can't change your mind.
13:21All right.
13:22As we get ready for round two,
13:25and what was billed is an action-packed fight,
13:27but so far the pace has not been that way.
13:29But again, it is a feeling out.
13:31See what a guy has,
13:32and that's what Owali told us.
13:33He's just going to see what this guy has.
13:34No need to really scope him on tape.
13:36Neither guy has seen the other guy fight much.
13:39In the case of Cintron,
13:40you wonder if all those early knockouts,
13:43and now he's scheduled to go eight,
13:44whether that's on his mind.
13:46Maybe he's saying,
13:46well, I'm not going to come out too quickly
13:48because then I won't have anything in round six,
13:50seven, and eight.
13:51I think the strategy there,
13:53that makes a lot of sense.
13:54Why not burn out?
13:55I think Owali wants the frustrating,
13:56knowing that Cintron's probably the bigger hitter here,
13:59frustrate him, carry him late,
14:00be happy to win the decision,
14:02but maybe, as he said,
14:03try for the KO late.
14:04As he tries to sneak a body shot in,
14:07and with a big wide left that lands.
14:10Owali's in the white and blue,
14:12red, white, and blue for Kermit Cintron.
14:15Owali, the southpaw,
14:16counters there with a left.
14:19Telling him to double up on the jab,
14:21and he does there,
14:22and lands with a nice combination there.
14:24And what happened there is,
14:25Saeed Auli led,
14:26instead of waiting, waiting, waiting,
14:28to counterpunch.
14:29It's been a valid criticism of his.
14:34Cintron trying to make the play here.
14:40Respectful enough to keep his distance.
14:43Looking for an opening.
14:46Cintron in red, white, and blue.
14:48Everywhere, top and bottom.
14:52Saeed Auli now backing up.
14:54And both corners, Steve told us,
14:56we'll see how the other guy can handle backing up.
14:58They don't think either guy can.
15:00It's a tough fight.
15:01It's a tough thing for any young fighter.
15:03Well, the thing is,
15:04both these guys are undefeated.
15:05They really have not been backed up.
15:07Now, I've seen a Wally fight
15:08a couple of times in New York,
15:09and my criticism of him
15:11was that he was too patient,
15:12and that's exactly what we're seeing now.
15:13He's a counterpuncher,
15:14and if the other guy isn't punching,
15:16well, then you can't counterpunch.
15:17So how do you draw punches?
15:19You do it by deacon, by fainting.
15:21Drawing Cintron's leads,
15:22then having something to counter against.
15:25In other words,
15:25really counterpunching the counterpuncher.
15:27He's got a nice, fast jab,
15:28and I don't understand why he can't, again,
15:31take the initiative and make it happen here.
15:32He could set the pace, I think,
15:34and maybe control the action that way,
15:35but he's not doubling up enough.
15:37They're trying to lead left hand
15:39that misses.
15:40Cintron continues to try to walk Wally down,
15:42doubling the jab there,
15:44picked off on the gloves.
15:47Wally.
15:49Another middle of the ring,
15:50and Wally bangs away with a good combination.
15:52Back comes Cintron with a right hand.
15:55Tries the left and the right,
15:56and gets tagged in return.
15:58Last half-minute around two.
16:00Right behind the head.
16:01And another tough one to score, Steve.
16:02I saw a body punch this round on Nick.
16:04That's our first in two rounds,
16:06our first body punch by Wally.
16:08Well, they say there's only an inch in height difference,
16:11but Cintron, wow,
16:12a little pivot there
16:13and telegraphed the right hand
16:15that didn't fool anybody.
16:23Cintron at the bell,
16:24scores with a right hand
16:25as we finish two.
16:30Okay, you're getting down,
16:31but you ain't think to make him pay.
16:32You don't break his body down or not.
16:34Okay, he's scared to death.
16:37You're giving him everything he needs.
16:39Don't give him no,
16:40don't give him a shit.
16:42Okay, let's go.
16:44If you accelerate,
16:46let's get some.
16:47Keep the pressure on it,
16:48and bang his body up.
16:50Okay, you gotta throw three and four punches,
16:52not one.
16:53Okay, let's go.
16:54Back him in the corner.
16:56Let him slide out the side.
16:58He's scared to death.
17:00Cut the ring off.
17:01Don't let him slide around.
17:02Just like what Joe said.
17:03Cut the ring off.
17:04Okay?
17:04You start throwing that hook to the bottom.
17:06Okay.
17:06You gotta be moving forward.
17:08Right, left one.
17:09Okay?
17:10Let's go.
17:12How bad do you want it?
17:13How bad?
17:14Huh?
17:15You want it this way?
17:16Huh?
17:16You want it?
17:17Let's go get it.
17:17Here's the killer.
17:18Huh?
17:19There's the killer here?
17:20Go get it.
17:20Come on.
17:22Let's go.
17:23Ready for round three.
17:24First off the stool,
17:24Saeed, Uwali,
17:26and the blue and white.
17:27And Kermit Cintron's instructions
17:29in the corner.
17:30Cut the ring off.
17:32Force him to fight.
17:33You agree, Steve?
17:35He just looks tight, you know?
17:37And cut the ring off's a good idea
17:38against the southpaw,
17:39who's moving a little bit.
17:40But Cintron just can't seem to get off.
17:42He's tempted.
17:43What cut the ring off means
17:44is step in the direction
17:47that Uwali wants to step in,
17:48but do it before Uwali does it.
17:50That way you're cutting him off
17:50and you can hit him.
17:52Now, he finally a little bit
17:53of punching here.
17:54Cintron once again
17:55trying to take the initiative here.
17:58Pick up the tempo himself.
18:01Take the play to Saeed Uwali,
18:02who's content to counter here,
18:04but now more or less
18:05avoiding punches
18:06and looking for an opening
18:07when Cintron misses.
18:11Different Cintron this round so far.
18:13Much more aggressive.
18:14More conviction here.
18:15Goes to the body with the left.
18:17Oh, and he's a nice right hand
18:19and Uwali tried it again,
18:21sweeping that right that missed.
18:23Look at the intensity
18:24in Uwali's eyes.
18:26Yeah, he's an amazing story.
18:28I mean, this is a guy
18:29born in Morocco,
18:30grew up in Belgium,
18:31and came to America
18:33with nothing, with one bag.
18:34Comes from very well-off parents,
18:36by the way.
18:36Doesn't box because he has to.
18:38Just loves the sport.
18:39And boy, did his eyes get big
18:41when he talked about Marvin Hagel.
18:42His idol.
18:43He says his idol
18:45because he wants to take
18:46people's heart away like that.
18:47We'll see what happens.
18:49This is scheduled for eight.
18:50Neither guy has ever been eight.
18:53Body shot there.
18:54Lead body shot with the left
18:56as Kuali in the white and blue
18:58continuing to abandon the jab
19:01in favor of the long left leads.
19:04Nosebleed with Uwali there.
19:07Ducks and bobs out of danger
19:09and tries the left.
19:10Counter.
19:11Cintron.
19:13Nobody jabbing here, Steve.
19:15I don't understand it.
19:17Especially Wali.
19:18I mean, the South Coast should be jabbing.
19:19He can land that jab,
19:20but his whole philosophy
19:22is to counterpunch.
19:23And that means waiting.
19:24And if you're waiting
19:25against a guy who's not punching,
19:26you're going to be waiting a long time.
19:27And one of the people
19:29in Owali's corner,
19:30Howard Davis,
19:31knows all about
19:32the former Olympic champion,
19:33knows all about jabs.
19:36He vowed that his man
19:37would use it tonight.
19:39And blood
19:40either running from the nose
19:41onto the lip
19:42or it could be that
19:43Uwali's lip is split also.
19:47Cintron started this round well.
19:49Uwali's taken control
19:50over the last two minutes.
19:51It's his round.
19:53Half a minute to go
19:54in round three.
19:55A tough one to score so far.
19:57Blood coming out of the nose
19:59of Saeed Uwali
20:00as he waits,
20:01faints,
20:02tries to make it happen here.
20:03It gets Cintron.
20:04A nice left-right combination
20:06catches Cintron.
20:07And then the lead
20:08right again
20:09as Uwali continues to flurry.
20:11Cintron just ducks out of danger
20:13and tries to
20:13press the attack back.
20:16I don't think that hurt him
20:17but it got his attention, Steve.
20:18And he's not answering
20:19with punches.
20:20He just looks tight to me,
20:21Cintron.
20:21Can't get off.
20:23And that's it for round three, Steve.
20:25And how do you have it
20:26after three?
20:27I have a 30-28.
20:29That first round,
20:29absolutely nothing happened.
20:31So I couldn't give anybody
20:32the round that called
20:33the 10-10
20:34and I've given Uwali
20:35the two rounds since.
20:3630-28 for Saeed Uwali.
20:38Don't blow it.
20:40Okay?
20:41That was beautiful.
20:45Give me some hands.
20:46Don't blow.
20:47I don't want you to blow.
20:48Give me some hands.
20:50Well, you're done.
20:52Okay?
20:54Hey, that was a good round.
20:56Very good round.
20:56I need to throw more jabs.
20:58Okay?
20:59Jabs.
20:59Ended the round
21:00while he won the round
21:02really with these flurries.
21:03He landed a left-right
21:04and they had the right hook.
21:06That really shook
21:07Cintron a little bit.
21:08Didn't hurt him.
21:09But while he told us yesterday
21:12that he's not a knockout puncher,
21:13he doesn't go for the KO.
21:15Well, he went for it there
21:16and did enough to win the round
21:17but certainly didn't do enough
21:18to hurt Cintron.
21:20Kermit Cintron,
21:21first love,
21:22was wrestling.
21:22Won a full scholarship
21:23to Ohio State
21:24but chose Stevens College.
21:26When the college dropped
21:27wrestling as a sport,
21:28he turned to boxing
21:29so he's really new
21:29to the game, Steve.
21:30But they say
21:31he's a natural athlete
21:32oozing with ability.
21:33They love his legs,
21:34the ability to get out
21:35of danger and such.
21:36But again,
21:37he looks a little coiled
21:38and a little wired so far
21:40in the toughest fight
21:41of his young professional life.
21:45Left hand lands by Wally
21:47and they fight
21:48in the flurry there.
21:49Cintron,
21:50red, white, and blue,
21:52backs up and starts again.
21:54Looks like he's fighting
21:54off his back leg now, Steve.
21:56Exactly.
21:57All his weight is
21:57on his right leg.
21:58And one thing we should point out,
21:59Cintron's last fight
22:00was against the South Pole
22:02and he went six rounds
22:03so that was a good experience
22:04for him and should have
22:05prepared him better
22:06for this fight
22:07than it did upon Ohio.
22:09But this is a huge step.
22:10I shouldn't say huge
22:11but it's a step up in class.
22:12This is a much better competition
22:13and Zayed Uwali
22:16and white and blue
22:17won't be as easy to solve.
22:21Fourth round scheduled
22:22for eight here.
22:24The other way,
22:24both unbeaten.
22:27And a close fight so far.
22:30Nobody's pumped up
22:31the volume in action
22:32as we expected.
22:34Again, maybe they're
22:34trying to stretch out
22:35him.
22:35Uppercut there by Uwali Lenz.
22:37He backs up,
22:39waiting to counter here.
22:40Nobody throwing shots, though.
22:42There's the left by Cintron
22:43and he takes a jab
22:45and return.
22:47Like, who's going to
22:48fire first?
22:49Working off the jab.
22:50Nobody's doing it, Steve.
22:51I don't understand it.
22:56Everything happens.
22:57Look at Wali talk to us
22:58before the fight.
22:59You blind your opponent.
23:00You set up,
23:01set your offense in motion
23:02with the jab.
23:03Let's see it.
23:05Hey, it's like any other
23:06kind of performance.
23:07If you're nervous,
23:07you're not going to be able
23:08to do what you did
23:09in the gym.
23:10And I don't know
23:11that Cintron's nervous,
23:12but he sure shows
23:12all the signs of it.
23:20Urging Wali to box,
23:22meaning jab.
23:23Make him do what he
23:23don't want to do.
23:24Get him uncomfortable
23:25is what they're yelling
23:26from the corner.
23:29Cintron trying to pick up
23:30the pace there
23:31and ducks under one
23:32and tries a right
23:33that misses.
23:36Cintron's,
23:36both jabs are short
23:38as he muscles
23:40Wali.
23:46Cintron continues
23:47to stalk, Steve.
23:49Boy, I'll tell you,
23:50given the lack
23:51of production of Cintron,
23:53you wonder,
23:53should Wali be doing more?
23:54Should he be winning
23:55these rounds
23:55by more than he is?
23:56It's not like he's
23:57dominating the fight.
24:02Just an alarming
24:04amount of punches
24:04that are missing,
24:05in my opinion,
24:06and inaction.
24:09Oh, there's the left
24:10lands twice.
24:14And Wali like that.
24:15They're both smiling now
24:16as they wind down
24:17round four.
24:19Cintron should smile
24:20less and punch more.
24:21Because he's lost
24:22this round
24:23according to Moe, Steve.
24:25And halfway home,
24:27scheduled for eight,
24:28and a welterweight
24:29clash of unbeatens.
24:32You're giving him
24:33this fight, okay?
24:34If you don't pick it up,
24:35you're going to lose
24:35your first fight.
24:36Do you hear me?
24:37If you don't pick it up,
24:38you lose your first fight,
24:39okay?
24:40Don't smile at him.
24:41Throw punches at him.
24:42Okay?
24:44You hear me?
24:45Huh?
24:47What are you feeling?
24:49You got wind in there,
24:50right?
24:51Then let him go.
24:52Throw the punches.
24:54Did he hurt you?
24:55Nope.
24:56Then let it go.
24:57Walk him down
24:57and throw punches.
24:58Even if you're
24:58sticking the jab on him,
24:59throw the right hand
25:00behind him at the chest.
25:01Okay.
25:02Let's go.
25:04You got to be
25:06100%.
25:07As you know.
25:10I'm doing a lot
25:11of those people.
25:12Yes.
25:13Okay.
25:13Let's turn this
25:14right.
25:14Let's turn this light.
25:15I need this.
25:17Okay?
25:18Let's take this here.
25:21Save simple instructions
25:22in the corner.
25:22They like Uwalee
25:23because he's making
25:24Sintron miss.
25:25And it's correct
25:26because Sintron's corner
25:26said,
25:27you're going to lose this.
25:27You've got to pick it up,
25:28throw shots.
25:29Even if you miss the jab,
25:31throw the right behind it.
25:32Very simple.
25:33Yeah.
25:33You know,
25:34it's as simple as that.
25:35Move your fists.
25:37Maybe he needs to be
25:37hurt with a shot
25:38before he'll come back.
25:39There's some kind
25:40of a wake-up call here,
25:41I guess,
25:41unless Sintron is lying
25:42in the woods
25:43for some reason,
25:44but not when you fall
25:45behind in a guy
25:46who knows how to go
25:47the distance
25:47against the guy
25:48like that.
25:49And there's Uwalee
25:51connecting there.
25:54And bumps one to the body
25:55that Sintron thought
25:56was low.
25:58Sintron with the jab
25:59there,
25:59but nothing behind it.
26:02Tries the one-two there
26:04and soaks up
26:06a shot in return.
26:11Wali fighting
26:12very much in control
26:12of himself, Steve.
26:14He was,
26:14and in the corner,
26:15I like his body language.
26:16He spoke to his corner.
26:17The other side,
26:18Sintron just taking
26:19instruction silently,
26:21not showing any oomph,
26:22you know,
26:22that's what he's lacking.
26:23Back to the body!
26:27Hit the spot!
26:33Both jabs are short.
26:34Right-hand lead
26:35misses by Sintron.
26:37He tries to follow
26:37with a hook.
26:38I think he heard him
26:38with that hook.
26:39And there goes the hook
26:40there,
26:40and then he hit him
26:41with the right.
26:42And Kawhi is rubbery
26:43there as he goes down
26:44flat.
26:45Not from a punch.
26:46He was just off balance.
26:48That last right-hand
26:48missed.
26:50Didn't really look like
26:51solid shots to me,
26:52Steve.
26:53The one left-hand,
26:54the hook in the beginning
26:55is the one that hurt.
26:57It's the one you
26:58obviously don't see
26:58because it wasn't
26:59a crushing blow,
27:00but let's see.
27:01Plenty of time here.
27:02Well over a minute.
27:04Will Saeed Awali survive?
27:06His hands are down
27:07and he's taking shots now!
27:09Takes a flush bomb
27:11and two of them
27:11and Dick Flaherty
27:13pulls it off.
27:14And yes!
27:17Wow!
27:18Kermit Cintron
27:19was lying in the woods.
27:22Have you ever seen
27:22a fight turn that fast?
27:24The guy did nothing
27:25for four rounds.
27:28How could he possibly
27:29have known he had
27:30his number?
27:31But it's not the point.
27:32He paid dividends there.
27:34A shocked corner.
27:36Oh, yeah.
27:36Saeed Awali,
27:37they thought they were
27:39in the express lane
27:39to something big.
27:40And Flaherty,
27:42if you thought for a second
27:43there,
27:43that might have been
27:44a quick stoppage.
27:45Awali was on his way
27:46down for a second time
27:47when the referee
27:47stopped the fight.
27:48I agree with you, Steve.
27:52There's Kermit Cintron.
27:54Jubilant in his corner.
27:57His live-in girlfriend's
27:58a fighter.
27:59She lost on the undercard,
28:00so the Cintron clan
28:01gets a split tonight.
28:06And there's Cintron
28:07in his rooting section.
28:11Wow.
28:12There you go.
28:14Kermit Cintron.
28:14That's absolutely amazing.
28:15Yeah, well,
28:16he justified the nickname
28:17in the long run.
28:18One left hook
28:19did all the damage.
28:23Saeed Awali
28:25pressed ball
28:26and in defeat.
28:27Back on his feet now
28:29as the fighters embrace
28:30in Awali's corner.
28:33But Saeed Awali
28:34is numb
28:36from that shot.
28:37Let's see how it started,
28:39the downfall of Awali
28:40and what Cintron did.
28:41Here we go.
28:44You see Awali
28:45already hurt at that point.
28:46The left hook
28:46had already landed
28:47and this is the follow-up
28:49damage here.
28:50And you'll watch.
28:50The last right hand
28:51that Cintron
28:52throws here
28:53does not land.
28:54Right here.
28:55Misses.
28:55Still counts as a knockdown
28:57because he basically
28:58went down from punishment.
28:59So the left started it,
29:00but that right hand,
29:01I thought,
29:01really landed flush.
29:03This is here.
29:04There it is.
29:05That was really
29:06the only punch
29:07after the first one
29:08that Cintron landed
29:09that was effective.
29:10Definitely snapped
29:10his head back.
29:11That was a
29:12head-jerking reaction
29:13there.
29:14And look at the legs
29:15on Awali.
29:16He is going,
29:16going, gone.
29:19And here's the way
29:20it looked.
29:20Well, if you think
29:21it was a quick stoppage,
29:22you know,
29:23Awali looks like
29:24he's got his legs here.
29:25That right hand
29:26landed, though.
29:28And now he's really flailing.
29:32And he's on his way down
29:33for the second time,
29:34so I think that justifies
29:35Flaherty's stoppage.
29:36Again, there was enough time
29:37left in the fifth round.
29:39I think Flaherty thinking
29:40he would absorb
29:41plenty of punishment
29:42couldn't be saved
29:42by the bell at that point.
29:44The one thing you don't know
29:45with undefeated fighters
29:46who have been fighting
29:46shaky competition
29:48is chin.
29:49And as it turns out,
29:50Awali did not have the chin
29:51to survive
29:52against a decent puncher
29:53in Cintron.
29:54And if you look at...
29:55Let's go to Ronnie Duncan.
29:56who makes it official.
29:59Ladies and gentlemen,
30:00referee Dick Flaherty
30:02stops this contest
30:03at one minute
30:04and 50 seconds
30:05around five.
30:07The winner
30:08and still undefeated,
30:09now an 11-0
30:10with 10 big knockouts,
30:13Kermit Cintron!
30:16Yeah!
30:18Cintron!
30:20Good luck!
30:22One more.
30:24Kermit Cintron.
30:26A late bloomer.
30:28He said he was a wrestler first.
30:30Started boxing about two years ago.
30:33So he loves and appreciates
30:34that one-on-one aspect.
30:36He turned pro last October
30:38and in now 10 months
30:40has needed 25 rounds
30:42to beat 11 opponents.
30:44This, his biggest score.
30:45And interestingly enough, Steve,
30:47it was,
30:48it was,
30:49as you put it,
30:50as you predicted,
30:51it was Cintron behind
30:52on everybody's cards.
30:53Big.
30:54He hadn't won a round
30:54on two of the judges' cards.
30:56Yeah, the two judges
30:57gave that first round
30:58to Wally.
30:58Otherwise,
30:59clearly he won every round
31:00to Wally.
31:01And let's go to the winner
31:02with Tim Smith.
31:04Thank you, Nick.
31:04And we're here with
31:05Kermit Cintron.
31:07And you expect a guy
31:09named Kermit
31:09to jump all over somebody
31:11right from the get-go.
31:12But Kermit,
31:13you didn't do that.
31:14And you were behind
31:15on the scorecards
31:16and then you landed
31:17that big punch.
31:18Were you aware
31:18that you were behind?
31:20Well, yes.
31:20My trainer kept telling me
31:22I was behind.
31:23You know,
31:23I was giving him the fight.
31:24He kept telling me,
31:25where's that killer at?
31:26Where's that killer at?
31:27I guess the fourth round.
31:29I'm not sure.
31:29Okay.
31:30We're going to go right now
31:31to this first knockdown.
31:32Why don't you just sort of
31:33set it up for us.
31:34Tell us what was going on here.
31:36Well, my trainer told me
31:38to put the pressure on him.
31:40Throw my punches.
31:42Combinations.
31:43And I hurt him
31:44on the left hook,
31:45I think it was.
31:46And then I finished him off.
31:50He tried to stay on me,
31:52but I kept throwing my punches.
31:53Tried to stay away from him
31:54until he went down.
31:55Was the first punch
31:56the left hook,
31:57was that the one
31:57that hurt him?
31:58That's right.
31:59Left hook.
32:00That's what hurt him.
32:01Now, did you think
32:03that you were going
32:04to be this patient
32:05in this fight
32:05or did things
32:06just work out that way?
32:08Nervous because of the camera.
32:10You know,
32:10I'm not nervous
32:11because of the fight.
32:13You know,
32:13I should have jumped on him
32:15since the beginning.
32:15That was our plan.
32:18Obviously,
32:18in the fourth round,
32:19that's why I came in
32:20and put the pressure on
32:23and finished him off.
32:25So it was one and one
32:26tonight for your household.
32:28You won here.
32:29Your girlfriend
32:30was not so victorious.
32:32Is there going to be,
32:34you know,
32:34some bragging rights
32:35in the household?
32:36Your girlfriend,
32:36Connie Bechtel,
32:37fought tonight.
32:38She was in Victoria.
32:39Do you have bragging rights
32:40in the household now?
32:41Well,
32:42my girlfriend's tough.
32:43I mean,
32:44she fought a tough girl.
32:46You know,
32:47she wanted to fight so bad
32:49and she always wanted
32:50to be under the car
32:51when I fight.
32:53She did pretty good.
32:55She's happy
32:56with the performance.
32:58Okay.
32:59Well,
32:59congratulations,
33:00Kermit,
33:01and best of luck to you
33:02the rest of the way out.
33:04Thanks for showboxing
33:06and main events
33:07for opportunity.
33:08Okay.
33:09And Andre from Fight News.
33:10Thank you very much.
33:11Okay.
33:12Back to you, Nick.
33:13Okay.
33:13Thank you, Tim.
33:14Kermit Sintron,
33:15what did he show you tonight?
33:17He showed the kind
33:18of punching power
33:19that allows you
33:20to survive actually
33:22a very flat performance
33:23for four rounds.
33:24He won the fight
33:24with one punch.
33:25I thought so.
33:26I thought you clocked
33:27it correctly, Steve.
33:28He admitted it very tight
33:30with the cameras.
33:30When we talked to him
33:31yesterday, of course,
33:32he said,
33:32I hate this.
33:33I'm not nervous in the ring,
33:34but the interviews kill me.
33:36But he did.
33:36He was wired for sound
33:38there early.
33:39But again,
33:39I got to give it to him
33:40with his patience.
33:41He obviously saw something,
33:42but I did think he needed
33:43a wake-up call
33:44from the corner.
33:45I kept imploring him,
33:46you got to get into this fight
33:47because they talked
33:48a good game about the jab
33:49and keeping things
33:50and violating Wally's space.
33:52And he didn't do it
33:52until that fifth round.
33:53So I think the verdict
33:55is still out.
33:55I'd love to see him
33:56fight Luis Colasso now,
33:57something like that,
33:58maybe on Showbox.
33:59We could start getting
33:59match-ups within the
34:00match-ups of Showbox.
34:02He's the guy you'd bring back.
34:03Anybody that can punch
34:04like that,
34:04you want to see him again.
34:0511-0,
34:0610 of those by KO.
34:08Kermit,
34:08the killer,
34:09Cintron,
34:10victorious in our lead-off bout.
34:12Coming up later on
34:14Showbox,
34:14the new generation,
34:15our main event attraction,
34:17it's unbeaten Emmanuel Lucero

34:19super-bantamweight contender
34:21John Lowy

34:32in sports.
34:33Here's Steve Albert
34:34to set the stage
34:35in Las Vegas.
34:38I'm here in the
34:39fight press room
34:40with number one
34:40IBF heavyweight contender
34:41David Tua
34:42as he gets ready
34:43to take on
34:43number two Chris Bird
34:44at an IBF heavyweight championship
34:46elimination bout.
34:47And David,
34:49contrasting styles here,
34:50it's the pure
34:51puncher in yourself
34:52versus the pure boxer
34:53in Chris Bird.
34:54Is it your intent
34:54to get inside,
34:56close the gap
34:57and force a brawl
34:58against the awkward southpaw?
34:59Most definitely.
35:00My homework is done.
35:01It's been a very
35:01cooling boot camp for me
35:03and everything is done.
35:05Nothing there is left to do
35:06but to go out and to fight.
35:07You came under sharp criticism,
35:08of course,
35:08after the Lennox-Lewis fight.
35:10First of all,
35:11was that criticism justified
35:13and what are you looking
35:14to do differently
35:14in this fight?
35:15As disappointed as I was,
35:17not only for myself
35:18and for the fans,
35:19I'm willing to accept
35:20what had happened then
35:22to make me a better person
35:23and a better fighter right now.
35:24You've enlisted
35:25the best fitness
35:26and conditioning experts,
35:27even went out
35:28and bought a $16,000
35:30treadmill,
35:30I understand.
35:32Why the dramatic change
35:34in the training regimen?
35:36Well, before I thought
35:37I was doing the right thing
35:38and I thought everything
35:39was going right
35:40but obviously I wasn't
35:42and to make a lot of changes
35:44and now I'm willing
35:46to do whatever it takes.
35:47I'm well focused,
35:48I'm more prepared
35:49and I'm willing
35:50to discipline myself,
35:51to dedicate myself
35:52to do what is right.
35:53Bottom line,
35:53what are you really looking
35:54to show people
35:55in this fight?
35:56Well, I'm willing
35:57to go out there
35:57and perform to what I can be,
36:00you know,
36:00to what I know
36:00I can perform to
36:03and to have the confidence
36:05in doing that.
36:06I had it all done up
36:08in the training
36:09as far as my preparation
36:10is concerned.
36:11David, thanks for the time.
36:13Thank you very much.
36:13All right, there you have
36:14what looks to be
36:15a refocused David Tua
36:16set for his IVF
36:17heavyweight elimination
36:18bout with Chris Bird.
36:20Promises to be
36:20an intriguing matchup
36:22of contrasting styles
36:23with the winner
36:24only a step away
36:25from boxing's
36:26most coveted prize,
36:27the heavyweight title.
36:30So it's the man
36:31with one of the most
36:31lethal weapons
