02:18The undefeated three-time world champion defends his super lightweight title against Greg Haugen.
02:23This former world lightweight title holder is known for his toughness and tenacity.
02:28The combative Haugen is always a dangerous adversary.
02:33Chávez versus Haugen for the WBC super lightweight championship.
02:37If rising superstar Terry Norris continues to send fighters into retirement or ruin, he'll run out of opposition.
02:46If two-time world champion Maurice Blocker captures a super lightweight crown, he'll be elevated into boxing's upper class.
02:54Norris defends his WBC super lightweight championship against Blocker.

03:37Nelson will meet the challenge of Ruelas for the WBC super featherweight championship.
03:44Four world title fights coming up live via satellite from Mexico City.
03:51Showtime, event television, and King Vision present the Grand Slam of boxing.
04:02Welcome to Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
04:05The fact that over 100,000 people have come to this stadium tonight
04:08is a testimony to the Mexican people's love of boxing
04:11and a tribute to Julio Cesar Chavez.
04:14The Mexican warrior and three other world champions defend their titles tonight
04:17in front of this huge audience.
04:19Azteca officials announced tonight's attendance at 130,000,
04:24making our Grand Slam of boxing number one all-time record
04:27in paid attendance for a boxing event.
04:29The first Jack Dempsey-Jean Tunney World Heavyweight Championship bout
04:32is now number two all-time in live paid attendance.
04:35And the Tunney-Dempsey rematch for the World Heavyweight title moves to number three.
04:39The highest all-time live gait was for Tony Zale against Billy Pryor,
04:44a middleweight non-title bout.
04:46That fight drew over 135,000 people, but no admission was charged.
04:53Buenas noches, everyone.
04:54I'm Jim Hill, and we're glad to have you tonight
04:56for what promises to be an extraordinary evening.
04:58Mexico City has been the host of the Summer Olympics and World Cup soccer,
05:02and tonight's Grand Slam of boxing has taken on a special luster
05:05that rivals those two prestigious events.
05:08Unquestionably, this is the most ambitious television production
05:11of a boxing event ever.
05:13Over 12 tons of equipment was flown into this country.
05:16approximately 10 miles of cable has been run through this massive stadium.
05:21And in order to complete this Herculean feat,
05:23over 150 production and technical personnel
05:26were brought to Mexico and Azteca Stadium.
05:29The weeks leading up to this event
05:31has really had this entire country eager with anticipation.
05:34You see, a Julio Cesar Chavez fight
05:36is always a big event for his countrymen.
05:39But when the undefeated and three-time world champion
05:41fights on his native soil,
05:43it's cause for national pride and celebration.
05:46Now, the weather conditions tonight
05:47for this quadruple header are absolutely perfect.
05:50The temperature is 58 degrees.
05:52Humidity is 42%.
05:53The winds out of the Northeast at 10 miles an hour,
05:56and there is a 20% chance of rain.
05:58Now, for the forecast on what's going to happen in the ring,
06:01let's go to blow-by-blow man Steve Alvin.
06:03Steve?
06:04Thank you, Jim.
06:05Most of the people here tonight
06:06came to see an international hero, Julio Cesar Chavez,
06:09from unassuming beginnings to great fame and fortune.
06:12But despite that,
06:14Julio Cesar Chavez has remained Mexico's loyal son,
06:17returning home following every title fight
06:19to spend time with his family.
06:20Between title fights in the U.S.,
06:22he often schedules fights in his hometown of Cuyacan.
06:26Humble for a person of his legendary stature,
06:28Chavez's values are grounded in religion and in family.
06:32And this overwhelming charisma and charm turned strangers into fans.
06:37And earlier this evening, the arrival of Julio Cesar Chavez.
06:42At the moment Julio was born, the doctor told his mother
06:44he was going to be one of the best boxers or soccer players in the world.
06:48Ironically, tonight Julio comes to a soccer shrine in his native Mexico
06:52to try and solidify his name among the best boxers of all time.
06:57Meanwhile, Greg Haugen, coming into a hostile environment,
07:00recently boasted, after I beat Chavez here in Mexico City,
07:04the only thing that worries me is how to get from the ring to my dressing room.
07:09Haugen was so preoccupied with Chavez that he almost lost his tune-up to a relatively unknown fighter,
07:14Armando Compass, back in December.
07:18I'm joined now by my partner, the fight doctor, Bertie Pacheco.
07:21Bertie, how about an overview of tonight's four title fights?
07:24Chavez Haugen, a matchup of contrasting personalities.
07:27Well, on paper, there's no way that Haugen can beat Chavez,
07:30especially not in front of 130,000 screaming fans.
07:33But he has decided to try to make him mad, to discombobie him, to get him in a street fight.
07:38We know he's tough. We know Haugen can take a terrific shot.
07:41But all you do when you get Chavez mad at you is you get a bigger beating.
07:45So before his fans, look for some punishment tonight.
07:48And then we have a pair of champions on the card, Terry Norris and Michael Nunn,
07:51who could both be perceived as heavy favorites.
07:54I think they're heavy favorites, but not so much in the case of Terry Norris.
07:57If he can go right through Blocker, yes, he can knock him out and finish.
08:00But Blocker's a fine boxer and a champion in his own right.
08:03He's not going to be that easy to hit. I make that a pretty interesting fight.
08:06That's not at all a pushover.
08:08What about Michael Nunn and Irish Danny Morgan?
08:10Well, that's the very best in the world, in Nunn, in his class,
08:14and the very best journeyman of Minneapolis.
08:16And that's a wrap of that fight.
08:18And then you've got Azuma Nelson and Gabriel Ruelas,
08:20an established star versus an up-and-coming fighter.
08:23Well, I can't tell you how many people have lost money waiting for the night
08:27that Azuma Nelson is no longer Azuma Nelson.
08:30He is the professor. He's the best. And he's tough against him.
08:33He's got a terrific young kid.
08:35And I think Azuma has lost it.
08:37And I think Azuma has lost it.
08:38It's almost a surreal setting here.
08:39Coming up at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, the first bout in our grand slam of boxing,
08:41Michael Nunn versus Dan Morgan for the WBA Super Middleweight Championship.
08:45As we go behind the scenes and take a look at Michael Nunn in his dressing room,
08:50getting ready to defend his WBA Super Middleweight title against Irish Danny Morgan.
08:54Let's get more on this fight from Jim Hill.
08:59All right, Steve. Thank you very much.
09:01The WBA Super Middleweight Championship is our first bout of the evening.
09:04Michael Nunn, a two-time champion, is hoping to reclaim the stature he lost when he was knocked out by James Toney.
09:09That KO loss cost none his IVF Middleweight Championship.
09:12Since then, he has been reborn as a super middleweight.
09:17He's a champion once again and wants to keep his belt.
09:21The challenger, Dan Morgan, has previously fought for the WBA Super Middleweight Championship.
09:28Since then, he has been reborn as a super middleweight.
09:30He's a champion once again and wants to keep his belt.
09:34The challenger, Dan Morgan, has previously fought for the WBA super middleweight championship.
09:38That bout ended abruptly and in disaster.
09:41Cristioso knocked out Morgan in the second round.
09:44Coming up, Nunn defends his second title and Morgan challenges for his second time.
09:57In 1988, Michael Nunn became part of boxing's royalty.
10:02He held the IVF middleweight crown for almost three years before abdicating to James Toney.
10:08Now he rules over the WBA super middleweight kingdom with supreme confidence.
10:13Star Wars, you know, one of the best boxing in the world of the day, you know, I mean, punch
10:19bars starting to come into his own, but my boxing ability is what got me here.
10:25The Michael Nunn who fought as a middleweight was a slick boxing defensive fighter.
10:29The reborn 168-pound super middleweight version is more of a puncher than a performer.
10:39Nunn has twice fought the tough Panamanian Victor Cordova, first to win the super middleweight
10:44championship, then to retain the title in a rematch.
10:47Dan Morgan was a steel worker with dreams of being a boxer.
10:59He still works in a Minneapolis factory, galvanizing steel.
11:05But he also labors at a boxing career.
11:07Regardless of the trade, Morgan applies the same hard work ethic.
11:12Since I was, you know, I was a kid.
11:18My father instilled this really, you work hard and you do the job right in whatever you're
11:28doing.
11:29While Morgan continued to punch the clock at the factory, he was punching out opponents
11:34and keeping an eye on his goal.
11:36As he rose through the super middleweight ranks, his dreams of becoming a contender were becoming
11:41a reality.
11:42I finally made it to be a contender in the top 10 in the world.
11:48From factory worker to club fighter to contender, Morgan was living his dream.
11:54The hard work and dedication were beginning to pay off.
11:57Irish Stan could envision the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
12:02Then I got to be a contender, I said, well, it'd be nice to be a world champion, you know?
12:08So I got to fight for the world title, I'm lost.
12:12I had the chance and opportunity, a lot of people don't get that, I'm grateful for it.
12:19Opportunity is knocking a second time for this blue-collar boxer.
12:23Unfortunately, the odds are stacked against him, since he is facing a two-time world champion.
12:29Nunn is enjoying his return to boxing's ruling class.
12:32He will guard his crown with all his ability.
12:34Morgan hopes he can find the chink in Nunn's armor.
12:39The only thing standing between me and my dream to be a world champion is to be Michael Nunn.
12:44Well, you know, Brian, I'm getting an opportunity to fight for the world championship.
12:47I mean, he's going to be definitely up for the fight, so I got to be on my P's and Q's.
12:54And I got to be ready because this guy's coming in and figuring, well, this might be the only
12:57time I'm going to fight for the world championship.
12:58So I can go out there and, you know, be my best and do my best.
13:01And I just got to take care of him, I got to get him out of here.
13:04Michael Nunn's been knocked down before.
13:05He's been knocked out.
13:07And, you know, his chin is there and I'm going to hit it and I'm going to put it out.
13:12If Morgan thinks he can hit me on the chin and take me out, I mean, he's in for a big surprise.
13:16I mean, I've been hit by some of the biggest barbers in my division.
13:19And took their shots and kept going.
13:20So, I mean, unfortunately, this guy is going to come up short.
13:23I'm a blue-collar worker, real hard worker, don't got a lot of money, and I ain't going
13:28to let this opportunity for my life slide away from me.
13:32There's nothing Morgan can do that I've never seen before.
13:36There's things that Michael Nunn can do that he's never seen before.
13:38And I'll export that on the 20th of February here in Mexico City.
13:42So Nunn believes he was born to be a member of boxing's ruling class, and Morgan believes
13:53that hard work will be rewarded.
13:55So we'll see if Nunn rules or if Morgan gets the job done.
13:58Let's go to ringside and Steve.
13:59Thanks again, Jim.
14:01We are closing in on Michael Nunn versus Dan Morgan for the WBA Super Middleweight Championship.
14:06Nunn taking this fight only 22 days after his first defense of the title, a unanimous decision
14:11over Victor Cordova.
14:14Now, originally, Julian Jackson was scheduled to fight Gerald McClellan for the WBC Middleweight
14:18Championship, but Jackson hurt his hand in training, so enter Nunn versus Morgan.
14:22Ferdy, are we looking at a total mismatch here?
14:25Well, you'd have to say it's close to it because the only chance that Irish Dan has is his punch,
14:31to land one punch on Nunn, which isn't easy.
14:33So I characterize this as a punch and a prayer.
14:36If Morgan doesn't land a punch, he ain't got a prayer.
14:38How about Morgan's strategy for an upset?
14:40Morgan's strategy's got to be just to come out and bomb, to try to get him in a fight.
14:45Nunn is such a superior boxer.
14:46He really is head and shoulders above Morgan.
14:49Morgan's only chance is to hope that he lands a good shot.
14:51Cinderella time.
14:52It's Tokyo again.
14:53It's Douglas and Tyson.
14:55It's a hopeless underdog against the champion.
14:57And just maybe that one punch will land.
14:59Now, Nunn went 12 rounds with Victor Cordova just three weeks ago and took several low blows.
15:03Do you think that took anything out of him?
15:05No, not at all.
15:05After 24 hours, all of that goes away, beside which I think a lot of that is acting.
15:10They wear this tremendous cut, which you can hit with a baseball bat.
15:13No, I don't think it has any factor whatsoever in this fight.
15:16All right, so it's Nunn and Morgan.
15:17Let's take a look at the challenger, Irish Danny Morgan, in the ring.
15:21A steelworker out of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
15:2341-2 with 30 knockouts.
15:25Rated number 12 by the WBA.
15:26Morgan, a former U.S. Marine, was taught to box, along with his five brothers, by his father, Jim,
15:38who gave up boxing to become a pro wrestler.
15:43And now here is the champion, Michael Dunn, making his second defense of the title in just over three weeks.
15:48The Davenport, Iowa product, now living in Agorah Hills, California, is 39-1 with 25 knockouts.
15:55That lone blemish, the disheartening defeat to James Toney back in 91 in Nunn's hometown,
16:00when Nunn was ahead on all cards, got careless in the 11th, and he was decked, losing the IBF middleweight crown.
16:05Often criticized for his non-aggressive running style, Nunn, perhaps tired of all the booing,
16:10has been more aggressive of late.
16:12Let's check the tail of the tape.
16:15The 29-year-old Nunn is two years younger than Morgan.
16:18Nunn with a two-inch height advantage, the weight even at 168,
16:22and a one-and-a-half-inch reach advantage for Nunn.
16:25To the rules, according to the WBA, 10-point must system in effect.
16:30Three judges scoring the fight, no standing eight count.
16:32The three knockdown rules in effect, it almost had to be enforced in Nunn's last fight
16:36when he knocked down Cordoba twice in the second.
16:39Only the referee can stop the fight.
16:40A fighter cannot be saved by the bell except in the last round.
16:45So here at Gigantic Azteca Stadium in Mexico City,
16:48the huge crowd getting set for the WBA Super Middleweight Championship.
16:51Let's get the official introductions from our ring announcer, Jimmy Lennon Jr.

20:38His outstanding record includes 39 wins,
20:41Only one loss with 25 wins by way of knockout.
20:45Welcome,
20:46The former IBF middleweight champion,
20:49Tonight defending his WBA super middleweight title.
20:53Demos la bienvenida al campeón Michael.
20:58Second to none.
21:01El referee Enzo Montero.
21:11So we are getting set for the WBA super middleweight championship here at Azteca Stadium.
21:18Steeped in tradition,
21:19Two World Cup finals were played here.
21:22The 1968 Summer Olympics,
21:24As Jim Hill pointed out,
21:25More recently,
21:26About, oh, three months ago,
21:27The first rock concert here at Azteca,
21:29Elton John sold out the stadium.
21:31130,000 strong.
21:37The biggest crowd for sports,
21:39114,000,
21:411986 World Cup finals.
21:43Argentina led by Maradona defeated Germany.
21:45This will be the new record tonight.
21:49Danny Morgan and Michael Nunn.
21:51Nunn, the southpaw,
21:52Not the biggest puncher,
21:54But he's accurate.
21:54Elusive, slick, mobile, and crafting.
21:58Danny Morgan from the old school,
21:59Orthodox style,
22:00Told us he's from the Stanley Ketchum School of Boxing.
22:03Likes to use the right hand more.
22:06Pretty good left hook.
22:08That's some interesting things to say.
22:10He says he's not the greatest puncher.
22:13He says he's not the fastest guy in the world.
22:15He's not really very slick,
22:17but he'll try his best.
22:26Irish Danny Morgan.
22:29Tonight, his second title shot,
22:31losing to Chris Tiozzo.
22:32After beating Victor Cordoba on January the 30th,
22:35Michael Nunn was home relaxing
22:36when he got a phone call.
22:37Do you want to fight again on February 20th
22:40was the question.
22:40Michael said, why not?
22:42And here he is.
22:43This is the shortest amount of time between fights
22:45for none.
22:46But he told us he had no reservations about it whatsoever.
22:49And the good thing is,
22:50they've always said he can't draw a crowd.
22:52He's drawn 130,000 people here.
22:53He's put that to bed for the rest of his life.
22:55Yeah, he can tell his grandchildren
22:56that they all came to see him, not Chavez.
22:59Said he doesn't know much about Danny Morgan,
23:00but said he intends to jump on him,
23:02test his shin, and throw combinations.
23:04Meanwhile, Morgan, the steel worker from Minneapolis,
23:08he said, I guess he'll have to catch me first.
23:13He's not going to go chasing after Michael Nunn.
23:15We'll see what happens.
23:16Well, right now, he doesn't have to chase.
23:18He's right there, and he's getting killed by him.
23:20I mean, you know, Michael has just taken his time.
23:22Nunn will pick you apart if you let him.
23:24I mean, you just stand right in front of him
23:25and pick you apart.
23:26He is right in front, where he doesn't need to be.
23:29Not too much head movement on the part of Nunn,
23:31which is how he got caught with Cordoba.
23:33Two low blows, as if the pick-up were Cordoba left off.
23:37Morgan continues to get tagged on the head by Michael Nunn.
23:43You can say that Morgan is from a boxing family.
23:45His dad, Jim, who's in the corner,
23:47six of his uncles and five brothers
23:48boxed his amateurs of pros.
23:50I understand he even has some sisters
23:52who can defend themselves pretty well.
23:55Jim, also a professional wrestler, the father,
23:57but he taught all of his sons how to box.
23:59Well, he sure wants to talk about how to punch
24:03because this guy's got a great punching record,
24:06and if he's got that kind of a punch,
24:07I have no idea why Michael Nunn is standing right in front of him
24:10without any head movement.
24:12He's punching and leaving his head right there.
24:14It's not like Michael Nunn.
24:15He must be asleep here this first round,
24:18like, taking this too easy.
24:19Well, he did fight 22 days ago.
24:24That should make him sharp, not dull.
24:29Now he's starting to open it up a little more.
24:32Michael Nunn going to work.
24:34Late in the first round, and Morgan is down on his knees.
24:38And that's what you see in the difference in class,
24:40the speed, the reflexes of a champion like Nunn.
24:42It gets a guy who's got a good heart,
24:44but he hasn't got any kind of speed or idea
24:46of what to do with that speed when it comes at him.
24:49Gets up late in the count,
24:5020 seconds remaining in the first round.
24:54And Nunn goes right back to it.
24:56Trying to end it early with a big left hook.
25:01He might beat this count if he wants to.
25:05He doesn't want to.
25:07And that's it.
25:09It is all over.
25:11Of course, a fighter cannot be saved by the bell
25:13except in the last round.
25:16But it's academic.
25:17A moot point as this one is over
25:19in the final seconds of the opening round.
25:23And you can hear the reaction from the crowd in the background.
25:26Well, you can't blame them.
25:28They've paid top dollar to come here.
25:30They want to see action.
25:31The problem here is a willing guy,
25:33but just not the class of the other fighter.
25:35It's two different kinds of people.
25:37It's just like putting a great college player
25:39to playing Jordan one-on-one.
25:41I mean, it's a different class.
25:43It's a different world.
25:45Well, we labeled it a mismatch
25:48at the start of the broadcast,
25:50and that's exactly what it turned out to be.
25:52A short night for Michael Nunn.
25:56The trip from California to Mexico took a lot longer.
26:00Well, he will be able to say
26:03that once in his lifetime he fought before 130,000 people.
26:06Let's take a look at what this first knockdown looked like
26:13because, really, it's speed of hand.
26:14What you're looking at here
26:15is a guy that's got such great reflexes
26:17and a guy that really doesn't know how to block anything,
26:20doesn't know where the punches are coming from.
26:21Look, he's got his hands down.
26:22He's totally outclassed and outsped,
26:25and that's a sort of fold down
26:26rather than just a collapse.
26:28And as he came back,
26:30he has no idea where to go with the defense.
26:34He didn't even try.
26:35He's completely out.
26:37Well, I know where he's going next.
26:38Back to the steel mill in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
26:42Yeah, but he can go back there and say,
26:43yeah, you chump's number four, the 430,000 people.
26:48This is the first knockdown, as we saw before,
26:51and it hadn't changed a bit since we last saw it.
26:54It's exactly like it was before.
26:56A overwhelming display of fast hands
27:00against an inept opponent.
27:01And now the last knockdown
27:07and the end of the fight
27:08and the final seconds of this first round.
27:11Of course, by this time,
27:14Steve is looking for the exit door,
27:16and Nunn is...
27:17Oh, look at that.
27:18Perfect.
27:18Right on the button.
27:20He shouldn't have gotten up.
27:20If he'd gotten up,
27:21the referee should have stopped it.
27:24Let's take a second look at that
27:25because it was just like a perfect hand.
27:27Look at that.
27:27Oh, you can't throw that better.
27:29It's a nice left overhand left,
27:32and out he goes.
27:34So Michael Nunn lifting his record to 40-1
27:38with 26 knockouts.
27:42His second defense of the WBA Super Middleweight Championship.
27:46His first was just three weeks ago
27:48over Victor Cordova.

28:41But a mismatch
28:42in our first bout of this grand slam.
28:45Michael Nunn
28:45over Morgan.
28:50No surprises.
28:55Pretty much what we expected.
28:57You know, you're always left with a thought.
28:59Julian Jackson was supposed to fight McClellan here.
29:01Now, that was an incendiary fight.
29:03Two guys that can really bomb meeting.
29:05It would have been another Haugen,
29:06not Haugen,
29:07but Hagler-Hearns fight.
29:09You know, big first round
29:10and maybe a knockout at the end of the...
29:11Instead, we had this.
29:12Too bad, but that's all you can do.
29:16Quick work for Michael Nunn.
