00:03:15Welcome to a sold-out Grand Garden Arena
00:03:18at the MGM Grand Hotel Casino and Theme Park in Las Vegas.
00:03:22The atmosphere in this arena is electric.
00:03:25Over 18,000 are here to witness in person
00:03:27Frank Bruno's first title defense
00:03:29and Mike Tyson's first attempt
00:03:31to regain the heavyweight championship.
00:03:34The worldwide audience is anticipated to be 90 million
00:03:37to view this rematch of two long-time adversaries.
00:03:41Seven years have passed since their first battle
00:03:43but Bruno and Tyson speak of that encounter
00:03:46as if it were yesterday.
00:03:48Tonight, each believes the day of final reckoning has come
00:03:51and there will be no need to live in the past.
00:03:56Hello everybody, I'm Jim Hill, your host
00:03:58for this night of championship boxing.
00:04:00And while there is no consensus
00:04:02between the three major sanctioning bodies
00:04:04as to who is the world heavyweight champion,
00:04:07tonight, Mike Tyson embarks on a mission to unify the crown.
00:04:10The first obstacle is champion Frank Bruno.
00:04:13Bruno had been a perennial contender
00:04:15until he seized the title from Oliver McCall last September.
00:04:18Now, he owns the championship he once coveted.
00:04:21And if he were able to defeat Tyson
00:04:23and avenge his loss to the one-time champion,
00:04:25that would truly be the crowning achievement of his career.
00:04:29For more on tonight's main event,
00:04:31let's go to ringside now and Steve Albert.
00:04:33Steve.
00:04:34All right, thank you, Jim.
00:04:35The build-up is over, but the questions remain.
00:04:38Are less than four rounds of boxing enough preparation
00:04:40for Tyson's first championship fight in over six years?
00:04:43And what about the caliber of his two opponents since the comeback?
00:04:46Not exactly quality tune-ups.
00:04:48And after McNeely and Mathis,
00:04:50Bruno is a giant leap up in quality,
00:04:52but who has he beaten?
00:04:53His biggest win was over Oliver McCall for the championship,
00:04:56but Bruno just barely beat McCall,
00:04:58who barely squeezed by Larry Holmes.
00:05:00Meanwhile, many feel that Tyson is not where he used to be,
00:05:03but Tyson, even at less than 100%,
00:05:05is probably still better than all of the heavyweight champions out there today.
00:05:09Now, ironically, it was Tyson-Bruno in 1989
00:05:12when many began to notice the chinks in Tyson's armor.
00:05:15And although Bruno is probably better today than he was seven years ago,
00:05:19he still has that questionable chin,
00:05:21and Tyson still has the sledgehammer punch.
00:05:24You know, they could hype the cliches all they want,
00:05:26like Bruno wants his revenge.
00:05:28Bruno wants to prove he's a champion.
00:05:29Or Tyson is improving his level of competition.
00:05:32But it's still the magnetism of Tyson, whether you like him or not,
00:05:36and the hint of upset, perhaps based on the fact
00:05:38that Bruno did rock Tyson in the first bout,
00:05:41which draws people into it.
00:05:44And earlier this evening,
00:05:46the arrival of the challenger, Mike Tyson,
00:05:48while he's projected a calmer, gentler personality than in the past,
00:05:52his general demeanor in the weeks leading to this moment
00:05:54has been distant and removed.
00:05:55However, sometimes you have to wonder
00:05:58how a person making a reported $30 million
00:06:00for doing something he supposedly loves,
00:06:03getting another opportunity to fight for a coveted world title,
00:06:07which he's yearned for, can appear so unhappy.
00:06:09Perhaps it's just his way of getting ready,
00:06:12his scowl, his game face.
00:06:15Even the handlers, including the normally approachable
00:06:17and loquacious trainer Jay Bright, have remained stone-faced.
00:06:20It's been reported that Bright has been muzzled by Team Tyson.
00:06:26With that, let me bring on my ringside partners.
00:06:28First, the fight, Dr. Ferdie Pacheco.
00:06:30And Ferdie, to say that so much has happened to these fighters
00:06:32since they last fought is an understatement.
00:06:35Well, when you stop to think how strange life is,
00:06:38three years ago, Tyson didn't know where his future was.
00:06:41He went into incarceration.
00:06:42What was that going to hold for him?
00:06:44Bruno was mired in a going-nowhere career,
00:06:47and then all of a sudden, here we are.
00:06:49The fate and the fortune of boxing turns
00:06:52in a scintillating evening of a heavyweight championship fight
00:06:55with both these men, and I take from it this little lesson.
00:06:58It's a lesson in life, and it's a lesson in boxing.
00:07:01Never quit.
00:07:02Just around the corner, your fortunes change when you least expect it.
00:07:06All right, and so much time has passed since their first meeting
00:07:09as we bring in our other ringside colleague, Bobby Cheson.
00:07:11Bobby, does the first fight have any relevance to tonight's fight?
00:07:14Steve, the first fight has to be very relevant for both fighters
00:07:16in several different ways.
00:07:17Both fighters' basic skills are still the same.
00:07:19Their styles are still somewhat the same.
00:07:21If they've changed at all, maybe very little.
00:07:23Tyson's still a great puncher.
00:07:25There are absolutes in boxing.
00:07:26A puncher will always be a puncher,
00:07:27and a fighter who doesn't have a great chin
00:07:28cannot go out and acquire one.
00:07:30This is one of the absolutes in boxing.
00:07:32It's not possible.
00:07:33The first fight lays a foundation, Steve,
00:07:35for what we can expect here tonight.
00:07:36In the first five rounds, Bruno, 20 pounds bigger,
00:07:38is going to be stronger,
00:07:39but that 20 pounds is going to hurt him in the later rounds
00:07:41when Mike comes on.
00:07:42You're not going to take Mike Tyson out with one punch,
00:07:44and Bruno needs to throw punches in bunches,
00:07:46which Mike does.
00:07:47And lastly, Mike Tyson has already beaten Frank Bruno.
00:07:49That remains in his mind.
00:07:51Bruno only believes he can.
00:07:52He has no proof of it.
00:07:53All right, the enthusiasm is building.
00:07:55Right now, let's check in with our roving reporter,
00:07:57Jim Gray.
00:07:58Jim?
00:07:58All right, thank you very much, Steve.
00:08:00Well, Mike Tyson arrived just a few minutes ago.
00:08:02He's back in the locker room.
00:08:04He's getting taped up and getting dressed.
00:08:05The fight's still a couple of hours away,
00:08:07but Tyson is here and is getting ready.
00:08:09We are now joined by Rory Holloway and John Horn,
00:08:12the co-managers of Mike Tyson.
00:08:13Let's start with Rory.
00:08:14How was Mike's day?
00:08:15What did he do to unwind and keep from getting nervous and anxious?
00:08:18Well, basically all week,
00:08:19it's been a very relaxing week for Mike.
00:08:20Even the last couple of days of sparring,
00:08:22it's been very, very relaxed,
00:08:23almost like a dead calm.
00:08:25Today, Mike got a lot of rest,
00:08:27spent a lot of time in his bedroom,
00:08:29looking at movies and stuff,
00:08:30just trying to stay loose and relaxed,
00:08:32anticipating a good fight.
00:08:34Did you guys talk about regaining the title,
00:08:36or has that not been mentioned?
00:08:37Well, absolutely.
00:08:38That's something that's been on my mind,
00:08:40John's mind, and Mike's mind, of course,
00:08:42for a long time.
00:08:43This is our goal.
00:08:45The first step is Bruno tonight,
00:08:47ultimately to unify the title.
00:08:49That's our first goal,
00:08:49so we always talk about it and always in our minds.
00:08:52John, there was a lot of secrecy about the training.
00:08:54How did the training go?
00:08:55We heard reports maybe Mike wasn't paying a lot of attention.
00:08:58I spoke with Mike yesterday.
00:08:59He said, this is the best shape he's in,
00:09:01so clear it up for us.
00:09:02I tend to believe Mike as opposed to the reports.
00:09:04Well, there's never, in our mind,
00:09:05there's never a doubt about Mike's training
00:09:07or a schedule or whatever.
00:09:08The schedule we make is not the same
00:09:10as the schedule that people make in their minds
00:09:11or the press or whatever.
00:09:13So when they don't get in,
00:09:13when they want to,
00:09:14they think something's wrong.
00:09:15Mike is fine.
00:09:16He's had a great training camp.
00:09:17He's confident.
00:09:18He's loose.
00:09:19He had a great day today.
00:09:20And he's just ready to roll.
00:09:22This has been six years now,
00:09:24since he fought for the title.
00:09:26And he's ready.
00:09:27He's been ready for a long time.
00:09:28And it's going to be a lot of fun tonight.
00:09:30Now, in my conversation with Mike,
00:09:32he told me he's been working out with some lions
00:09:33that he has at home and a tiger.
00:09:35It's helped his quickness and his power.
00:09:37You've seen this.
00:09:37How has it helped?
00:09:38I don't know about it,
00:09:39but it helped Mike quick
00:09:40because I'm getting out of there.
00:09:41But Mike, he loves the cats.
00:09:43The cats love him.
00:09:44They stay around him.
00:09:45And they're a lot of fun.
00:09:46And it's really been a lot of peace to Mike.
00:09:49There's been a lot of fun for him.
00:09:51He really likes pets and stuff a lot.
00:09:53Great.
00:09:53Thanks, John.
00:09:54Rory, good luck to you guys tonight.
00:09:55Let's go up to Jim Hill.
00:09:57All right, Jim.
00:09:57Great.
00:09:58Thank you very much.
00:09:58I'm joined tonight,
00:09:59and we're happy to have him,
00:10:00former WBO heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison.
00:10:03And Tommy, it was just a couple of months ago,
00:10:04right here at the MGM Grand,
00:10:05you tested HIV positive.
00:10:08Since then, there's been a worldwide suspension of you,
00:10:10and you have retired from boxing.
00:10:12What have you been doing since then?
00:10:14Well, Jim, right now I'm in the process
00:10:15of putting together a program
00:10:17that's going to allow me the opportunity
00:10:18to get out and speak to high schools
00:10:19and colleges across the nation
00:10:21to help educate people,
00:10:22particularly my generation,
00:10:23about this virus.
00:10:24You know, this is a subject
00:10:26that very few people are really educated about.
00:10:28I know that I wasn't,
00:10:29and now I'm paying the ultimate price for that.
00:10:31You know, I just want young people in America
00:10:33to view me and view my situation
00:10:35as something, as a living revelation
00:10:36to what can happen to them
00:10:38if they choose to take the low road
00:10:40and not be educated about this sort of thing.
00:10:43And so far,
00:10:43what's been the reaction from the public?
00:10:45The reaction has been very overwhelming.
00:10:47I'm very happy with that.
00:10:48Okay, let's talk boxing
00:10:49because that's why we're here tonight.
00:10:50What's your view
00:10:50on the current state of the heavyweight division?
00:10:52I think there's a lot of talent
00:10:53in the heavyweight division right now,
00:10:54particularly a lot of young heavyweights.
00:10:56You know, I think the direction
00:10:57of the heavyweight division
00:10:58pretty much hinges tonight
00:10:59on what happens here.
00:11:00And, you know,
00:11:01I think a lot of people truly wonder
00:11:02what's going to happen to Mike Tyson
00:11:04if, in fact, he engages in a war.
00:11:06You know, is he going to start
00:11:07questioning his conditioning?
00:11:08You know, is he, you know,
00:11:10after this four-year layoff,
00:11:11what's going to happen in his mind?
00:11:12I think, you know,
00:11:13how he reacts, you know,
00:11:15is really going to be criticized tonight.
00:11:17You know, I believe that, you know,
00:11:20the burning question is whether or not,
00:11:23the burning question is how many people out there,
00:11:25what they expect of him,
00:11:26that sort of thing.
00:11:27I think he's going to do a good job.
00:11:28And isn't it amazing that just one fight,
00:11:30the main event tonight,
00:11:31will have a dramatic impact
00:11:32on the rest of the heavyweight division?
00:11:35Absolutely.
00:11:35All right, Tommy, glad to have you.
00:11:37We're going to have a lot of fun.
00:11:38And we'll be hearing more from Tommy
00:11:39on his comments on the WBC Heavyweight Championship
00:11:42and the rest of tonight's card

00:13:57Thank you, Jim.
00:13:58As we approach our first bout,
00:13:59the battle for the vacant
00:14:00IBF Junior flyweight title,
00:14:02top-rated Melchor Cobb-Castro
00:14:04taking on the number two contender,
00:14:06Michael Carbajal.
00:14:07They've never met in the ring,
00:14:08but they share the same nemesis,
00:14:09former world champ
00:14:10Chiquita Gonzalez,
00:14:11who beat both men twice,
00:14:12although in their first meeting,
00:14:14Carbajal stopped Gonzalez
00:14:15in the seventh in a war.
00:14:17And let us take a look
00:14:18at the number two challenger,
00:14:19Michael Carbajal,
00:14:20known as Little Hands of Stone,
00:14:22a two-time world champion
00:14:23and 1988 Olympic silver medalist
00:14:25and a man who is very familiar
00:14:27with tonight's title,
00:14:28having defended it nine times
00:14:29in his three-and-a-half-year reign
00:14:30as champion.
00:14:31Ferdy,
00:14:32your read on Michael.
00:14:34Michael lost some of the fire
00:14:35with those two big beatings
00:14:36he took from Chiquita,
00:14:38but he's stoked up again.
00:14:39He understands he hasn't fought
00:14:41up to Carbajal's standards.
00:14:43He wants to get it back tonight.
00:14:44He is fierce and he is determined
00:14:46to get in a punch-out,
00:14:47so I look for a blazing good fight
00:14:49from Carbajal tonight.
00:14:51And let's take a look
00:14:52at the number one contender,
00:14:53Melchor Cobb-Castro,
00:14:55the former WBC light flyweight champ
00:14:57who held the title
00:14:58for less than 90 days.
00:15:00He's waited patiently
00:15:00for a shot at regaining
00:15:01a world championship,
00:15:02winning nine straight
00:15:03in the last three years.
00:15:04Bobby, your take on Cobb-Castro.
00:15:06Well, Cobb-Castro's
00:15:07a smooth boxing south pole,
00:15:08but he doesn't have tremendous power
00:15:10and not KO in both hands.
00:15:11He's smart, good boxer, good shape,
00:15:13but he lacks that power
00:15:14and victories
00:15:15over real quality opponents,
00:15:16which makes him,
00:15:17even though he's
00:15:18the number one contender,
00:15:19an almost three-to-one dog year
00:15:20to the number two contender,
00:15:21Michael Carbajal.

00:18:12And presenting his opponent

00:18:56now to give instructions.
00:19:01Do we have any questions?
00:19:04You have 12 rounds.
00:19:05This is for the IBF
00:19:06championship of the world.
00:19:08I want a good,
00:19:09clean fight.
00:19:10If I take a break,
00:19:11I want you to step back
00:19:12cleanly,
00:19:13obey my commands,
00:19:14and defend yourself
00:19:15at all times.
00:19:16Let's go to work.
00:19:24Final instructions
00:19:25from referee Jay Nady.
00:19:27Michael Carbajal,
00:19:28critics of Carbajal
00:19:29say he may have seen
00:19:31better days.
00:19:32Tonight we'll see
00:19:32if he still has it
00:19:33against formidable
00:19:34opposition in
00:19:35Melchor Corcob Castro,
00:19:3745-4-4
00:19:38with 19 knockouts.
00:19:39All four defeats
00:19:40by decision.
00:19:42Here we go.
00:19:43Round one scheduled
00:19:44for 12
00:19:44for the vacant IBF
00:19:45junior flyweight title.
00:19:47Carbajal,
00:19:48the number two contender
00:19:48in the white trunks.
00:19:50Corcob Castro,
00:19:50the number one contender
00:19:51in the blue.
00:19:53Corcob Castro told us
00:19:54the best way
00:19:55to win this fight
00:19:55is to freeze Carbajal out,
00:19:57not get in a punch out.
00:19:58He'll look to box.
00:19:59He is not anxious
00:20:00to go toe-to-toe
00:20:01with Carbajal.
00:20:02Something you can't
00:20:03hardly avoid
00:20:04if you're fighting Carbajal.
00:20:05I mean, he gets in close.
00:20:06He starts firing.
00:20:07If he's got the old
00:20:08firing in him tonight,
00:20:09and that's what
00:20:09we're going to see,
00:20:10then it's going to be
00:20:11a tough night
00:20:12for Carb Castro
00:20:13to stay away from.
00:20:14For a guy like Carb Castro
00:20:15too, being shorter
00:20:16with shorter reach
00:20:17and height,
00:20:18to get inside
00:20:19and not be a puncher
00:20:20is a difficult thing
00:20:21because he's got to be
00:20:21in and out
00:20:22and in and out
00:20:22and that takes
00:20:22so much energy.
00:20:24Carbajal told us
00:20:25he'd like to draw
00:20:26Carb Castro
00:20:27into a slugfest
00:20:28and to do that
00:20:29he'll try to
00:20:29to cut off the ring
00:20:30and make
00:20:31Carb Castro fight.
00:20:32He feels he's got
00:20:33the power
00:20:34over Carb Castro
00:20:35but he thinks that
00:20:37Carb Castro
00:20:37will be moving
00:20:39around a lot.
00:20:43Carb Castro said
00:20:44that Carbajal thinks
00:20:45slow.
00:20:46He doesn't react.
00:20:48I don't think
00:20:49that's right.
00:20:50I think he's made
00:20:51a big mistake
00:20:52because that's what
00:20:52he's estimating
00:20:53Carbajal.
00:20:54He fires off
00:20:54very fast
00:20:55just as you saw
00:20:56right then.
00:20:57When he gets in close
00:20:57his hands fly.
00:20:59And Ferdy is
00:20:59you know you were there
00:21:00he also went on to say
00:21:01he loses his head
00:21:02does Carbajal
00:21:03when he gets hit
00:21:04and Carb Castro
00:21:05added my speed
00:21:06is a thousand times better.
00:21:07Well, that's why
00:21:08we're here.
00:21:08His speed's better
00:21:09but certainly his power
00:21:10isn't.
00:21:11He's got 45 wins
00:21:11and only 19 knockouts
00:21:13where 25 knockouts
00:21:14and 39 wins
00:21:15for Carbajal.
00:21:16Power certainly
00:21:17on the side of Carbajal
00:21:18and also that
00:21:19awkward southpaw stance.
00:21:20Once again
00:21:21the southpaws
00:21:21are always difficult
00:21:22when you box
00:21:23with the southpaw
00:21:24counters are backwards
00:21:25everything's in reverse.
00:21:25And Carb Castro
00:21:26feels his southpaw style
00:21:27will not affect Carbajal.
00:21:29He's fought too many
00:21:30left handers he says.
00:21:31He thinks that Carbajal
00:21:32will adjust
00:21:33and look out
00:21:33a little wrestling
00:21:35tactics there.
00:21:38Wild miss
00:21:39by Carbajal.
00:21:40He went right over the top
00:21:41and landed on his shoulder
00:21:42that looked sloppy
00:21:43but it didn't
00:21:44didn't do anything
00:21:45to either fight him.
00:21:45Some bad intentions
00:21:46on it though.
00:21:47Yeah.
00:21:47I mean you could see
00:21:48I mean Michael
00:21:49has always fought fierce.
00:21:50I mean we covered him
00:21:51in the Olympics
00:21:52in Korea
00:21:53and boy from the
00:21:54first opening gong
00:21:55that guy was there
00:21:56100%.
00:21:56Little guy huge
00:21:57huge heart.
00:21:59Carbajal
00:22:01knockout power
00:22:02as Bobby pointed out
00:22:03he can also
00:22:04take a punch.
00:22:06He does have trouble
00:22:07with the elusive
00:22:08quick moving styles
00:22:09as we saw
00:22:09in his second fight
00:22:10with Shakira Gonzalez
00:22:11who fought a very smart fight
00:22:12and took the
00:22:13WBC IVF
00:22:14light flyweight titles away.
00:22:17Carbajal
00:22:17from the streets
00:22:18of Phoenix, Arizona
00:22:19trains in his backyard
00:22:21the fabled
00:22:219th Street gym
00:22:22under the tutelage
00:22:23of his brother Danny.
00:22:24Gave back to the community
00:22:26by refurbishing
00:22:27an old church
00:22:27on 9th Street
00:22:28renamed it
00:22:28the 9th Street gym.
00:22:30As you talked about before
00:22:31Gonzalez
00:22:31Conchie Gonzalez
00:22:32somewhat of a
00:22:34nemesis for both fighters.
00:22:37Beat them both twice.
00:22:39Carbajal did beat
00:22:40Gonzalez once.
00:22:42Once again
00:22:43very little action
00:22:44Carbajal has to be given
00:22:46the advantage
00:22:47because he's come in.
00:22:48Let's listen to the corner
00:22:48and see what advice he gets.
00:22:50Give me the best one.
00:22:51Okay?
00:22:52Give me that.
00:22:53What he's trying to do
00:22:54is do the same shit
00:22:55that they had Gonzalez
00:22:57to move around
00:22:58move around
00:22:58and then try to come out strong.
00:23:00Don't let him take
00:23:00the last 10 seconds.
00:23:02Okay?
00:23:03He's gonna have to
00:23:04stand and trade.
00:23:05Alright?
00:23:09Don't get careless.
00:23:10Just keep the pressure on him.
00:23:11Get them hands high.
00:23:14If he wants to run around
00:23:15let him run around
00:23:16but you gotta throw.
00:23:17Okay?
00:23:17The jab siquiera.
00:23:18No more move.
00:23:19Put him in front of his car.
00:23:21Make him commit.
00:23:23Okay?
00:23:24You're doing alright.
00:23:27Velocidad.
00:23:28Poco a poco.
00:23:30Bang!
00:23:30Regresas cada vez que bloqueas
00:23:31con velocidad.
00:23:35Nacho Bernstein saying speed.
00:23:36Speed is what it is.
00:23:37You know, get faster.
00:23:38As soon as he gets in close, speed.
00:23:40Well,
00:23:42it's hard to do with Carvajal
00:23:43and not get hit back.
00:23:44Let's see what goes on
00:23:45in second round.
00:23:46Action's gotta speed up.
00:23:47That was a slow
00:23:48and boring first round.
00:23:49Well, round one
00:23:50followed the strategy
00:23:51as Cobb Castro
00:23:52constantly moved around the ring
00:23:54and Carvajal will have to
00:23:55cut him off
00:23:56and try to use his power.
00:23:58Yeah, but moving around
00:23:59the ring is not all it's...
00:24:01That doesn't win your fight.
00:24:02It certainly doesn't win
00:24:03your championship.
00:24:04You gotta stop the fight.
00:24:05It's not all it's cracked up to me.
00:24:05You gotta fight.
00:24:07Are my old eyes right?
00:24:08That would say
00:24:09above the law
00:24:10on his trunks,
00:24:11on Carvajal's trunks.
00:24:12Yes, that's the name
00:24:13of a rap group
00:24:15that sang his ring walk music
00:24:16on Carvajal's trunks.
00:24:17He has the names
00:24:18of his children
00:24:18along with the name
00:24:19of the rap group
00:24:20above the law.
00:24:21You're a fountain
00:24:22of information today.
00:24:23Could you tell me
00:24:23what that tattoo is
00:24:24on the back of his calf?
00:24:27Let's not get out of hand,
00:24:28now, Ferdy.
00:24:30Round two.
00:24:31Cobb Castro works closely
00:24:33in the gym
00:24:33with WBC strawweight champ
00:24:34Ricardo Lopez,
00:24:36one of the best.
00:24:37We'll see him later.
00:24:38He's 40-0,
00:24:39considered by many
00:24:41as pound for pound
00:24:42the best in the world.
00:24:44They're very good friends
00:24:45and they share
00:24:46the same trend
00:24:46of the man you talked about,
00:24:47Ignacio Therastain.
00:24:48I think Carvajal has to
00:24:50push a little more,
00:24:50use the jab a little more,
00:24:51use the stiff jab.
00:24:52He's got the big power jab.
00:24:53Stick it out there,
00:24:54make the smaller fighter
00:24:56jump around and make him
00:24:57speed around and push him
00:24:58back like this on a rope.
00:24:59Work his body,
00:24:59rough him up a little.
00:25:01Don't hold, don't hold.
00:25:03The action heating up
00:25:04a little bit here
00:25:05as Cobb Castro
00:25:06going to the body.
00:25:09If it was possible,
00:25:10who would ever think
00:25:11you'd live to see
00:25:12a fight in which,
00:25:14in which Carvajal
00:25:15is a taller fighter.
00:25:17I mean,
00:25:17he's so small.
00:25:18I mean,
00:25:18here's taller than this guy.
00:25:19He's 5'5".
00:25:20Cobb Castro just 5'1".
00:25:24From China,
00:25:25Compeche, Mexico.
00:25:28Turns 28 in April,
00:25:29the number one contender
00:25:30in the blue trunks.
00:25:31He prefers the pronunciation,
00:25:34Melchor.
00:25:41You know,
00:25:41right now,
00:25:42even with that,
00:25:43Cobb Castro's leaving
00:25:44too much room.
00:25:45He's quicker,
00:25:45but he's leaving too much room
00:25:46between him and Castro.
00:25:47If he's going to get in and out,
00:25:48he's got to be
00:25:48just out of range
00:25:51of Carvajal's punches,
00:25:51not as far out as he is,
00:25:53and he's not going to get it
00:25:53done from out there.
00:25:55Cobb Castro,
00:25:56the southpaw,
00:25:58missing wildly
00:25:58with that right,
00:25:59then the left hook.
00:26:01But Michael's
00:26:02coming in with that right hand
00:26:03straight down the pike.
00:26:04This kid's wide open
00:26:05right down the pike.
00:26:06And as he steps in,
00:26:07as Michael steps in,
00:26:09that makes more force
00:26:10to that right hand,
00:26:11and he has been applying it
00:26:12to the forehead
00:26:13of Cobb Castro.
00:26:14Interestingly,
00:26:15Cobb Castro
00:26:16kind of strays
00:26:17from the typical
00:26:17Mexican face-first
00:26:18toe-to-toe brawler style.
00:26:20Only the 19 KOs
00:26:21in 45 wins.
00:26:23Exactly.
00:26:24As Bobby pointed out,
00:26:25it's half the power
00:26:26against full power.
00:26:28He employs a fast-moving,
00:26:29quick-handed
00:26:29technician-style
00:26:30to complement
00:26:31his natural
00:26:32southpaw approach.
00:26:34Usually,
00:26:34he is a slow starter
00:26:36and a fast finisher.
00:26:37There's that left
00:26:38hook by Cobb Castro,
00:26:40but it did not land.
00:26:40Missing wildly again
00:26:41with the left hook.
00:26:52That right hand
00:26:54is going in.
00:26:55It's catching him.
00:26:56It's going straight,
00:26:57straight in,
00:26:57and it's catching him.
00:27:17Here's what we're talking about.
00:27:18If Cobb Castro is going to be
00:27:19effective,
00:27:20he's got to be
00:27:21just barely out of range
00:27:23in his right hand.
00:27:24He's going to throw
00:27:24his right hand
00:27:25and his left hand here.
00:27:25He's got to be
00:27:26just out of range
00:27:27and then fire right back
00:27:28with his speed
00:27:28and step in and counter.
00:27:29And you watch it happen
00:27:30when Cobb Castro
00:27:30misses the right hand.
00:27:33Right there.
00:27:34See, he's got to be
00:27:34right on top of it.
00:27:35And even though he doesn't
00:27:36have the range
00:27:37to get back
00:27:37and Cobb Castro pulls out,
00:27:38that's where he's got to be.
00:27:39He's just about to be
00:27:40in the tip of those gloves,
00:27:40Steve.
00:27:41He's going to be effective.
00:27:43All right, Bobby,
00:27:44round three and round two.
00:27:45Both fighters show
00:27:46that they'll be
00:27:46willing to mix it up inside.
00:27:48We'll see what happens
00:27:49here in round three
00:27:50if there's more
00:27:50toe-to-toe contact.
00:27:53I think they've both
00:27:54got to step it up.
00:27:55I think Carver Howell's
00:27:55got to start getting
00:27:56a little bit more
00:27:57aggressive than he's been.
00:27:59And Cobb Castro's
00:28:00got to do something positive
00:28:01to win these rounds
00:28:02rather than to just
00:28:03let him slip away.
00:28:04He's getting close,
00:28:05as Bobby showed you
00:28:06in a tall straight.
00:28:06It's got the good idea.
00:28:07It's just not getting it.
00:28:12Cobb Castro in the blue.
00:28:13He's the number one
00:28:14contender for the
00:28:15IBF Junior Flyweight
00:28:17Championship,
00:28:17former WBC Light
00:28:18Flyweight Champion.
00:28:22Quick!
00:28:23Cobb Castro has never
00:28:24been down.
00:28:25Stop punching on the break.
00:28:26Referee Jay Nady,
00:28:27who looks like
00:28:28Sean Bradley in there
00:28:30next to these two guys.
00:28:31Yeah.
00:28:32He just said,
00:28:33don't hit on the break.
00:28:34Actually, you know,
00:28:35it wasn't flagrant.
00:28:36They weren't really
00:28:36flying at it.
00:28:37He's just trying to
00:28:38make sure that it
00:28:39stays a nice,
00:28:40clean fight,
00:28:40which it has been.
00:28:46T. Cobb Castro
00:28:47has to draw that fire,
00:28:48but he can't jump
00:28:49so far back out of range.
00:28:50And you can see him
00:28:51there as he was
00:28:51jumping,
00:28:52he was inching up.
00:28:53Something he's got to do.
00:28:54He's got to stay
00:28:54close to him.
00:28:56Carvajal, of course,
00:28:57has been down
00:28:58in that war
00:28:58with Chiquita Gonzalez.
00:29:00He got off the canvas
00:29:01twice to win that fight.
00:29:04I tell you what,
00:29:05Bobby,
00:29:05I'd hate to be
00:29:06leaping in
00:29:07when you're facing
00:29:07a guy can fire
00:29:08as fast
00:29:09as Carvajal can
00:29:11and is hard.
00:29:12Leaping in
00:29:12and getting hit.
00:29:13You try not to leap,
00:29:14you try and step
00:29:14smartly,
00:29:15but he's got to
00:29:16make the move.
00:29:16He's got to come forward.
00:29:17He can't hit the man
00:29:18if he can't reach him.
00:29:18And several times
00:29:19he's left his feet
00:29:20coming in.
00:29:21He's getting a little
00:29:21flustered.
00:29:22The distance is so great.
00:29:23You see how he reached
00:29:24for it that time?
00:29:25That distance
00:29:25would begin to bother him.
00:29:27Oh, nice.
00:29:28Oh, good.
00:29:28That's a perfect example
00:29:30of that slip and counter.
00:29:31Cobb Castro.
00:29:32Hang on, hang on,
00:29:32hang on his arm.
00:29:33That was just what you
00:29:34showed on the Telestrator.
00:29:35Exactly the punch.
00:29:37He rocks just out of range,
00:29:38just off the tips
00:29:39of that glove.
00:29:39And it's, you know,
00:29:40you've got to be careful
00:29:41because if you misjudge
00:29:42you get caught
00:29:42flushing the face.
00:29:44And he got hit
00:29:45in the forehead just then
00:29:46and his knees buckled
00:29:47but not from the punch.
00:29:48I mean, he was
00:29:49in a bad position.
00:29:51Carvajal's first
00:29:52title fight here
00:29:53since November of 1994
00:29:54over two years ago
00:29:56when he lost again
00:29:58to Chiquita Gonzalez
00:29:59in their third fight.
00:30:00He's 6-0 since
00:30:01the last five
00:30:02by knockout.
00:30:05Straight right hand
00:30:05by Carvajal.
00:30:06There you can see
00:30:07the power of that right hand.
00:30:08Right down the middle.
00:30:10And it got between
00:30:11the gloves,
00:30:11the defense of Cobb Castro.
00:30:13Well, that's been
00:30:13there all night.
00:30:14It's starting to sting
00:30:15and stun him a little bit.
00:30:17Cobb Castro's not going
00:30:18to be able to eat that
00:30:19for 12 rounds,
00:30:20I'll tell you.
00:30:20Well, Carvajal told us
00:30:21yesterday he feels
00:30:22he's got the power
00:30:25against the elusive
00:30:26Cobb Castro.
00:30:28Missing with that
00:30:29right hook.
00:30:30Crank.
00:30:30Michael Carvajal.
00:30:31Good duck under move
00:30:32there by the number
00:30:33one contender.
00:30:34See, pace is important
00:30:35if you're going to make
00:30:36a big puncher,
00:30:37run out of gas,
00:30:37or at least use
00:30:38a lot of energy.
00:30:40Cobb Castro's not
00:30:40keeping that pace for him.
00:30:55No, no, no, no hables.
00:30:57Mejor ve viendo
00:30:58lo que estás haciendo,
00:30:59¿me entiendes?
00:30:59Y no, no comentes aquí,
00:31:01el chorro.
00:31:03Ahorita vas a boxear igual,
00:31:04que es el cuarto rato.
00:31:06Pero a ver,
00:31:07intenta ver si puedes
00:31:08hacer un rompimiento
00:31:09y le caes a tu brazo.
00:31:12Inténtalo,
00:31:13que no se te olvide
00:31:14porque esa es la base
00:31:15de la victoria,
00:31:15esa es el sorprenderlo.
00:31:17Ahorita le metiste golpes
00:31:20y el tipo reacciona muy lentamente.
00:31:23Y todavía me pierde.
00:31:24All right,
00:31:24this is the making a miss
00:31:25of points.
00:31:26He missed,
00:31:26he came around,
00:31:27of course,
00:31:27that was a low blow
00:31:28after he made a miss.
00:31:29Nacho was saying,
00:31:30now you got the style,
00:31:31then just step it up
00:31:31about 50%.
00:31:34When you see Castro,
00:31:35see what he does,
00:31:35just off that hand,
00:31:37counters with the straight
00:31:37or the overhand left,
00:31:39that's what he's got to do,
00:31:39who's got to just make that miss,
00:31:41not be by a lot
00:31:41because he is shorter
00:31:42and he's not going
00:31:43to reach as easily.
00:31:44And that's exactly
00:31:45what they told him
00:31:45in the corner,
00:31:46Bobby.
00:31:46Nacho said,
00:31:47that's the punch,
00:31:48you landed it good.
00:31:49Now increase the intensity,
00:31:50try to be faster,
00:31:51but that's the punch
00:31:52we're looking at.
00:31:53So Bobby,
00:31:53you hit it right on the head.
00:31:55That's exactly their plan.
00:31:57Ignacio Beristain
00:31:58has trained eight world champions,
00:32:00including Ricardo Lopez,
00:32:01his upcoming,
00:32:02and Chiquita Gonzalez
00:32:04offering the advice.
00:32:05Cobb Castro
00:32:05having more success
00:32:06with the overhand,
00:32:08the looping lefts,
00:32:09while the straight rights
00:32:10seem to be working more
00:32:11for Carvajal
00:32:11as we enter round four.
00:32:14Cobb Castro
00:32:15hasn't done enough
00:32:16in each round two
00:32:17and he's getting closer,
00:32:18he's getting the idea,
00:32:19but he's just
00:32:19not doing enough
00:32:21and Carvajal
00:32:22is leading the fight.
00:32:23I mean,
00:32:23he's making the fight.
00:32:25See,
00:32:26that's one of the things
00:32:26Cobb Castro
00:32:27has to worry about
00:32:27is that power.
00:32:28When you have to worry
00:32:29about that power,
00:32:29you have to
00:32:30almost take a secondary thought
00:32:32to your punches
00:32:32and he can't do that.
00:32:33He's got to be able
00:32:34to slip,
00:32:34have confidence
00:32:35in his chin
00:32:35and attack a little bit.
00:32:37Well,
00:32:37Nacho told him
00:32:37to step it up 50%
00:32:39and I think we're seeing
00:32:39a much faster
00:32:40and much more determined
00:32:42fighter this round
00:32:43in Cobb Castro
00:32:44than he has been.
00:32:46Meanwhile,
00:32:46Michael Carvajal
00:32:47in the white trunks,
00:32:49more of a slugger
00:32:51than a boxer,
00:32:52sometimes gets
00:32:53lured into the wrong
00:32:54kind of fights,
00:32:55wrong kind of style.
00:32:56He seems to be holding
00:32:57his own
00:32:58as far as style
00:32:59is concerned here.
00:33:00He's trying to lure,
00:33:01trying to draw
00:33:01Cobb Castro
00:33:02into his stop.
00:33:06He wants to get
00:33:07into a street fight here.
00:33:09There's a swing
00:33:10and a miss.
00:33:12Mike Carvajal,
00:33:13he landed
00:33:14with the right uppercut
00:33:15to the belly
00:33:15and then missed
00:33:16with the left.
00:33:19And the thing,
00:33:20he's landing.
00:33:21I mean,
00:33:21he lands one,
00:33:22he misses one,
00:33:22but he lands.
00:33:23He's always in action.
00:33:26I mean,
00:33:26this guy likes
00:33:27to fight.
00:33:29Well,
00:33:30Cobb Castro
00:33:30feeling that
00:33:31his speed
00:33:33will do the trick
00:33:34here against
00:33:34Michael Carvajal,
00:33:36but Carvajal's
00:33:36power may
00:33:37win out.
00:33:38Lego, Lego, Lego.
00:33:39Carvajal's blocking
00:33:39a lot of punches,
00:33:40quick little shots
00:33:41pretty nicely too,
00:33:42so he not only
00:33:43is not leaning
00:33:44bigger shots,
00:33:44but he's not even
00:33:45leaning as many
00:33:45shots right now.
00:33:46Let him out,
00:33:47let him out, Lego.
00:33:47Michael Carvajal,
00:33:49fabled amateur career,
00:33:50began his pro career
00:33:51six months
00:33:52after a very
00:33:52successful amateur
00:33:53career kept
00:33:54by the silver medal
00:33:55performance
00:33:55in the 88 games.
00:34:00That right hand
00:34:01keeps finding
00:34:02its way.
00:34:04The traditional
00:34:04right hand lead
00:34:05down the middle
00:34:06against the southpaw
00:34:07for Carvajal now
00:34:08with the distance
00:34:08and the range
00:34:09and the power
00:34:11working.
00:34:12Well,
00:34:12left hook there
00:34:12by Cobb Castro,
00:34:13but not much steam
00:34:14behind it.
00:34:15And Carvajal just shook it off.
00:34:17If that had good steam,
00:34:18that was a very good punch.
00:34:19He just didn't have it.
00:34:20It was right on the temple.
00:34:22I'll miss there
00:34:23by Carvajal,
00:34:24Jane 80.
00:34:25Just watch the heads.
00:34:27I didn't see that much.
00:34:29And it banged head
00:34:30just briefly
00:34:30as they both came
00:34:31into each other
00:34:31but nothing major.
00:34:33Well,
00:34:33you do that
00:34:33when you fight
00:34:34left-handers.
00:34:34It's like stepping
00:34:35on each other's toes.
00:34:36That's what happens.
00:34:38Bob Castro,
00:34:38the southpaw
00:34:40in the blue.
00:34:49We're here
00:34:50at the MGM Grand Garden
00:34:51in Las Vegas, Nevada.
00:34:53The vacant IVF
00:34:54Junior Flyweight Championship
00:34:56all leading up
00:34:56to the WBC
00:34:58Heavyweight Championship
00:34:59between the champion
00:35:00Frank Bruno
00:35:00and the challenger
00:35:01Mike Tyson.
00:35:04Be more active,
00:35:05okay?
00:35:09When you get inside,
00:35:11work,
00:35:11work,
00:35:11keep working
00:35:12whatever freehand
00:35:12you got,
00:35:14get inside that body.
00:35:16All he's doing
00:35:17is trying to hold,
00:35:18okay?
00:35:18Yeah,
00:35:19he's gonna try
00:35:20they're doing
00:35:20the same kind
00:35:21of shit.
00:35:21He's trying to run
00:35:22around and wait
00:35:23until the later rounds
00:35:24but he can't,
00:35:24he's got no power.
00:35:25Just don't get careless.
00:35:34work that body
00:35:35when you get inside.
00:35:44Round number five,
00:35:45two fighters
00:35:46in pursuit
00:35:46of a vacant crown,
00:35:48the IVF
00:35:48Junior Flyweight Championship.
00:35:50the number one contender
00:35:52in the blue trunks,
00:35:53Melcher Cobb Castro,
00:35:54the number two challenger
00:35:55in the white trunks,
00:35:57Michael Carbohol.
00:35:58Now here's a fight
00:35:59where I have Carbohol
00:36:00winning handily,
00:36:01yet if you walked in
00:36:02and watched these
00:36:03you weren't keeping score,
00:36:04it's kind of an even fight
00:36:05because nothing's happening.
00:36:06Not one is taking
00:36:08the advantage of the other.
00:36:09Nobody's getting a big beating.
00:36:10It's just kind of,
00:36:11you know,
00:36:12nice little gym workout here,
00:36:14you know,
00:36:14unless they heat up.
00:36:15Yeah,
00:36:16there was a nice little
00:36:17combination by
00:36:19Castro and,
00:36:20you know,
00:36:21it's again,
00:36:21it's every round is won
00:36:22kind of clearly
00:36:23but not by a lot.
00:36:24It's very light.
00:36:24The third round was close.
00:36:25It almost could have been even
00:36:27but not a lot of action.
00:36:29It's a very difficult,
00:36:30tactical fight to fight.
00:36:32Meanwhile,
00:36:32this crowd settling in
00:36:33for hopefully
00:36:35an exciting main event
00:36:37better than 15,000
00:36:40should be on hand
00:36:41when all is said and done.
00:36:42SRO.
00:36:43It is filling up
00:36:43if you look around.
00:36:45Well,
00:36:45anybody doesn't come early
00:36:46to see Carvajal fights crazy.
00:36:48This is not one of the great fights
00:36:49that he's done
00:36:50but Carvajal is
00:36:51always going to give you
00:36:52his money's worth.
00:36:53This just doesn't happen
00:36:54to be one of them.
00:36:54Not only that,
00:36:55Ricardo Lopez later.
00:36:57Maybe the best known secret,
00:36:58I mean,
00:36:59the least known
00:37:00of the great fighters.
00:37:01stop.
00:37:02I.J. Lady
00:37:03getting all over
00:37:03both fighters
00:37:06taking charge here.
00:37:09He doesn't want
00:37:10that head movement
00:37:11by Meltzer Cobb-Castro
00:37:12coming in head first.
00:37:17The rule here
00:37:18if an accidental foul
00:37:19occurs before the end
00:37:20of the sixth round,
00:37:21it's a no decision
00:37:22after the sixth
00:37:23they go to the cards.
00:37:24We're in round five.
00:37:26Now comes a little action
00:37:27from Cobb-Castro.
00:37:28trying to tie him up.
00:37:31Meanwhile,
00:37:31a little holding
00:37:32and hitting there
00:37:32by Carvajal.
00:37:33Yeah, because Carvajal
00:37:33likes to fight.
00:37:34I mean,
00:37:35he doesn't care
00:37:35from outsiders
00:37:36from inside.
00:37:37He just likes combat.
00:37:40He's got a fire
00:37:41burning in him
00:37:41that's been banged
00:37:43by Chiquita
00:37:43in two fights
00:37:44when he's back again.
00:37:45He's got that fire.
00:37:47Cobb-Castro coming forward.
00:37:48He is not known
00:37:49as a brawler
00:37:50and Carvajal
00:37:51looking to get
00:37:51Cobb-Castro
00:37:52into that kind of a fight.
00:37:54He kind of jumps forward
00:37:56on his toes.
00:37:56His feet are never really
00:37:57planted for any power.
00:37:58He's certainly not
00:37:59a power puncher
00:38:00and if he's going to stop you
00:38:01it's going to be from
00:38:01fatigue
00:38:02and a combination of that
00:38:03with an intuitive effect
00:38:04of a lot of punches
00:38:05if he lands a lot
00:38:06and right now
00:38:06he's not landing a lot.
00:38:11Michael Carvajal
00:38:12from Phoenix, Arizona.
00:38:14Melchor Cobb-Castro
00:38:15from China, Compeche, Mexico.
00:38:18Don't hold, don't hold.
00:38:18He's having a little bit
00:38:19better around.
00:38:20Came out kind of nice
00:38:21with a three or four
00:38:22punch combination
00:38:23pushed Carvajal
00:38:24back to the far corner.
00:38:25But, you know,
00:38:26can't really get in.
00:38:27Can't get respect
00:38:28from Carvajal
00:38:28because you can't hurt him.
00:38:30Cobb-Castro
00:38:31does not have power
00:38:33and by the same token
00:38:35Carvajal
00:38:35can really take a punch.
00:38:38So that does not
00:38:39bode well
00:38:39for the number one
00:38:40contender Cobb-Castro
00:38:42as we head for the bell.
00:38:55How the hell are you?
00:38:56You're fighting
00:38:57at the same pace.
00:38:58You don't have any
00:38:59many changes
00:38:59or anything.
00:39:11You're fighting a common fight,
00:39:29an ordinary fight.
00:39:30You're getting beaten
00:39:31every round
00:39:32because you have no heart.
00:39:33You've got to come out here
00:39:34and boy,
00:39:34he is giving him hell.
00:39:40Because it's the sixth round,
00:39:41you're just giving
00:39:42this fight away.
00:39:43Start fighting.
00:39:44Well, round six
00:39:45begins.
00:39:46Now, this type of pace
00:39:47would generally favor
00:39:48a champion,
00:39:49but there's no champion here.
00:39:51The lack of action
00:39:52a little bit surprising
00:39:53and pressing the attack
00:39:55could sway the judges
00:39:56in a close fight.
00:39:58Well, he told me,
00:39:59he says,
00:39:59you're landing
00:40:00no combinations whatsoever.
00:40:02You're fighting
00:40:02like you're a beginner.
00:40:04You've forgotten
00:40:05everything you ever learned.
00:40:06Come in here
00:40:06and fight
00:40:07for the title.
00:40:08He really gave them all.
00:40:10Every once in a while,
00:40:11it's amazing to me
00:40:12sometimes that a trainer
00:40:13overlooks the power
00:40:14of the opposition
00:40:15and that it's really
00:40:16gotten his fighters' attention.
00:40:18But you see how hard
00:40:19he's trying now?
00:40:20He is trying to be,
00:40:21to at least satisfy his corner.
00:40:23He's trying to at least
00:40:24get some kind of approval
00:40:25when he gets to the corner.
00:40:26Let go, Michael.
00:40:27Jose really lacerated
00:40:28his confidence
00:40:29in the corner.
00:40:31Well, he's coming in.
00:40:32He's taking his swings.
00:40:33He's getting his wax in there.
00:40:34And what I've always maintained
00:40:35is I get mad
00:40:36when fighters don't put themselves
00:40:37in a position to win
00:40:39but just survive.
00:40:40Saying, well,
00:40:40I went the distance
00:40:41with so-and-so,
00:40:42the great so-and-so.
00:40:42Just go the distance
00:40:43doesn't mean anything
00:40:44if you've never tried to win.
00:40:47Break, stop.
00:40:50Jay Nady,
00:40:51the third man of the ring
00:40:52from Las Vegas.
00:40:53Bill Graham of Las Vegas,
00:40:55Tom McDonough
00:40:55of Tacoma, Washington,
00:40:56and Dave Moretti
00:40:57of Las Vegas
00:40:58are the three judges
00:40:59ringside.
00:41:06Michael Carbohal
00:41:07with a wild left hook
00:41:08that misses.
00:41:09Michael, Michael, Michael, Michael.
00:41:09Boy, that was a hard
00:41:10left hook, too.
00:41:12Michael, Michael.
00:41:13Halfway through round six,
00:41:17Brown's starting to get anxious
00:41:18and edgy.
00:41:20They want more action.
00:41:28Carbohal popping to the head,
00:41:29but that looks to be a hard head.
00:41:33Let go, let go, let go.
00:41:34Digging in to...
00:41:35Oh, nice body shot.
00:41:37Yes, that was.
00:41:38Michael Carbohal unleashing.
00:41:40You can tell when one is really digging in,
00:41:43and he's digging in with his body shots.
00:41:45Carbohal stepping up the pressure,
00:41:48stepping up the strength of his punches.
00:41:50It's very difficult to communicate
00:41:51to the people at home
00:41:52how difficult when a fighter
00:41:53is so much stronger,
00:41:53more powerful than you,
00:41:55how difficult it is to work to him
00:41:56when he has all that extra strength.
00:41:58And that's one of the reasons
00:41:59Mike Tyson is so effective.
00:42:01Let go, let go, let go.
00:42:05Carbohal picking it up here now,
00:42:07beginning to land more frequently,
00:42:10and really digging to the body
00:42:11of Cobb Castro,
00:42:12the number one contender.
00:42:14Off the top of the head
00:42:15by Cobb Castro,
00:42:16doing no damage to Carbohal.
00:42:22And those pitter-patter punches
00:42:24by Cobb Castro
00:42:24having no impact whatsoever.
00:42:29Sweeping left hook there
00:42:30by Carbohal
00:42:31to the top of Castro's head.
00:42:44Nice round, guys.
00:43:14Some of the quick words he uses
00:43:17humiliation, mediocrity,
00:43:18and an insult to the public.
00:43:25All right, let's take a look
00:43:26at the way Carbohal punishes the body.
00:43:30There you go.
00:43:30And that is right to the ribs,
00:43:33and that hurts.
00:43:34Yeah, you look at it again.
00:43:35He digs this nice shot.
00:43:36It's around.
00:43:37It's clean right under the elbow.
00:43:38He digs it in there.
00:43:39And before that,
00:43:40there was one or two on the inside,
00:43:41so he's working the body.
00:43:42He's trying to slow
00:43:43the quicker man down.
00:43:46So here we go
00:43:47into round number seven.
00:43:49Halfway through this fight
00:43:51and halfway toward
00:43:52decroding a new champion.
00:43:54This is for the vacant IBF
00:43:55Junior Flyweight Championship.
00:43:59How about some unofficial scores, Doc?
00:44:01I have him way ahead, 60 to 55.
00:44:03Carbohal?
00:44:03You got him.
00:44:04Actually, I got a 59-54.
00:44:06I threw a round in there.
00:44:07It was close,
00:44:08but I give the benefit of the doubt,
00:44:09I gave Castro the fifth round.
00:44:11I thought he threw a couple more combinations,
00:44:13but at best,
00:44:15I'm going to give him one round.
00:44:15That's the one I gave even, Bob.
00:44:17I mean,
00:44:18I couldn't quite give it to him,
00:44:19but I made it even.
00:44:20Oh, my God!
00:44:24Carbohal looking for his 40th win.
00:44:26He's 39-2 with 25 knockouts.
00:44:30And as we mentioned,
00:44:31Carbohal a slugger,
00:44:32more than a boxer,
00:44:33sometimes gets lured to the wrong kind of fight.
00:44:35Not unlike our colleague upstairs,
00:44:38Tommy Morrison,
00:44:39who sometimes fought the wrong style
00:44:41for certain fighters.
00:44:42What do you think about that, Tommy?
00:44:44Well, I think certainly Castro's corner
00:44:46has got him certainly picking up the pace
00:44:48over the last few rounds.
00:44:49It seemed like he's being a little bit more effective,
00:44:51but Carbohal seems to be keeping the distance,
00:44:53and he seems to be lunging a little bit.
00:44:55So I think Carbohal's controlling the pace of the fight.
00:45:00Tommy Morrison working alongside Jim Hill upstairs.
00:45:02We'll hear more from Tommy later.
00:45:05Quick! Stop! Stop! Stop! Stop!
00:45:06Don't hold! Don't hold!
00:45:08Don't hold!
00:45:09Stay in front of me. Don't hold him.
00:45:10Well, for what this fight may be lacking
00:45:13in action may more than be made up
00:45:16for, in our next fight,
00:45:18a special six-round women's bout
00:45:20between Christy Martin and Deidre Gogerty.
00:45:22And as Christy likes to say,
00:45:24don't go to the refrigerator.
00:45:25She's never in a boring fight, Stephen.
00:45:27That's amazing for me to even be saying.
00:45:28She feeds off the crowd.
00:45:31She loves the excitement.
00:45:33And she is explosive.
00:45:34Should be interesting.
00:45:35Such a sweet, nice lady.
00:45:36When you talk to her,
00:45:37as soon as that bell rings,
00:45:38she becomes vicious,
00:45:39just like any other fighter I know.
00:45:42She said she got into a business
00:45:44where people ask her the things
00:45:45you're never supposed to ask a woman.
00:45:47What's your age?
00:45:48Don't hold.
00:45:48And what's your weight?
00:45:49Let go. Let go.
00:45:51Unfortunately, she has to tell all.
00:45:53Don't hold.
00:45:54Well, the consequences
00:45:55of getting into this sport.
00:45:57Well, anyway,
00:45:58round seven continues.
00:46:00Not much action here.
00:46:02It's scheduled for 12
00:46:03for the IBF Junior Flyweight Championship.
00:46:06Wild swing and a miss there
00:46:07by the number one contender,
00:46:08Melchor Cobb-Castro Carvajal
00:46:10pretty much controlling the fight
00:46:12using his power.
00:46:14Less than 30 seconds
00:46:16remaining in round seven.
00:46:17That straight right hand
00:46:18keeps coming down the pike.
00:46:19It's beginning to break up the brow.
00:46:21He's getting all red
00:46:22around the top of the forehead
00:46:24and the brow.
00:46:25And that is Cobb-Castro.
00:46:27And that's because
00:46:28Carvajal's straight right hand
00:46:29just is a thing of beauty.
00:46:30Comes right down there.
00:46:31Well, he's finding out
00:46:32about those little hands
00:46:33of stone firsthand here.
00:46:35Manitas de Piedra.
00:46:36And you can see Carvajal
00:46:37trying to draw him in
00:46:38and counter him,
00:46:39but right now Castro
00:46:41losing the battle.
00:46:44He's up.
00:46:56When you hit him
00:46:56with that right hand
00:46:57and you throw the hook,
00:46:58if you miss that hook,
00:46:59then he's bending, right?
00:47:00Come back with the right hand,
00:47:01Michael.
00:47:02All right?
00:47:06Turn your face with it.
00:47:13A little brotherly advice.
00:47:15If you're going to throw a hook,
00:47:17they're edging him on top of his head.
00:47:19He ain't doing that.
00:47:21That means you did.
00:47:25Funny, we asked him
00:47:26how old his brother was
00:47:27and he didn't know.
00:47:34He said all out.
00:47:35Don't just throw a combination
00:47:37and stop.
00:47:38Punch, punch, punch.
00:47:39Keep going.
00:47:39This fight is gone
00:47:40unless you fight.
00:47:41I mean, they're sending him out
00:47:43to do or die.
00:47:44Here we go.
00:47:45Round eight.
00:47:46Melcher Cobb Castro
00:47:47in the blue
00:47:48showing more of the effects
00:47:50of Michael Carvajal's punches,
00:47:52particularly on the forehead.
00:47:53But no dangerous cuts thus far.
00:47:58And Melcher Cobb Castro
00:47:59looking to step it up here.
00:48:01He's got it right there.
00:48:02He should be punching
00:48:03every which way he can.
00:48:04But look what beautiful defense
00:48:07Carvajal put up just now.
00:48:10Not one of those punches
00:48:11landed as he watched him
00:48:12whistle by.
00:48:14Yeah, Michael thought
00:48:15and thought and thought
00:48:16and he said,
00:48:16I can't remember
00:48:17how old my brother is.
00:48:18I just know he's older
00:48:19than me.
00:48:20My brothers wish
00:48:21I would do that.
00:48:21Let go, let go, let go.
00:48:23Stop, stop, stop.
00:48:24Go grab his arm, Danny.
00:48:25Quickly approaching
00:48:26the point of
00:48:27absolutely no return
00:48:29for Cobb Castro.
00:48:30He's got to really
00:48:31do something here
00:48:32to start to close this show
00:48:33if he wants to even be
00:48:33in the race for a decision.
00:48:37Missing there
00:48:37with the right hook.
00:48:38He was off balance too
00:48:39when he threw it.
00:48:40Moving to his left.
00:48:48You know, Bobby,
00:48:48when you're ahead
00:48:49this far,
00:48:51I wonder if you just
00:48:52kind of gear down
00:48:52in your head
00:48:53and say,
00:48:53all I got to do
00:48:53is keep this up
00:48:54and I'll win the fight.
00:48:55I don't have to
00:48:55knock this guy out
00:48:56or do anything
00:48:58because Carvajal
00:48:59isn't fighting
00:48:59like he's desperate.
00:49:01He wants to knock
00:49:01this guy out.
00:49:02He wants to win
00:49:03convincingly.
00:49:03He's just here.
00:49:04Let go of him.
00:49:05There is this thing
00:49:05that we're called
00:49:06playing it safe,
00:49:07you know,
00:49:07I guess.
00:49:08That's what I'm asking.
00:49:09Do you see what I see?
00:49:10It just looks like
00:49:11a guy playing it safe
00:49:12going into the 12th round
00:49:14and picking up his belt.
00:49:14You know,
00:49:15and I don't think
00:49:16there's anything wrong
00:49:16with that.
00:49:17At the same time,
00:49:17I like to be a little
00:49:18more sure of things
00:49:19and convincing.
00:49:21He's winning the rounds
00:49:21but not by any
00:49:22great margins.
00:49:23You can never tell
00:49:24in a couple of the rounds
00:49:24that are close
00:49:25that may swing the other way
00:49:26and controversy surrounds us
00:49:29wherever we go.
00:49:30Effective punch there
00:49:31just a moment ago.
00:49:33A sweet little
00:49:34crisp right book
00:49:35by Michael Carvajal
00:49:36that tagged
00:49:37Carl Castro
00:49:38right on the jaw.
00:49:42Carvajal continues
00:49:43to have his way.
00:49:45Less than a minute
00:49:46remaining in round
00:49:47number eight.
00:49:53Carvajal doing
00:49:54what he said
00:49:55he would do.
00:49:56Look to cut off
00:49:57the ring
00:49:57cut off the angles
00:49:59and try to get
00:50:00Cobb Castro
00:50:01into a slug face.
00:50:03I just leaned over
00:50:03and said to his brother
00:50:04who's sitting next to me
00:50:05have you seen Cobb
00:50:06win any rounds?
00:50:06He said hell no
00:50:07he hasn't won a round yet.
00:50:10Of course you would
00:50:11expect your brother
00:50:11to say that.
00:50:12Right.
00:50:12Except your brother
00:50:13might not say that.
00:50:14He might disagree.
00:50:19There's a counter punch
00:50:20a straight left
00:50:21by Cobb Castro.
00:50:22Michael Carvajal
00:50:22walking right into it
00:50:23but shaking off the effect.
00:50:25He's got the good chin.
00:50:25And that's one of the
00:50:26things you don't want to do
00:50:27is you don't want to get
00:50:27careless and walk into
00:50:28a punch like that
00:50:29and get caught
00:50:30with a Sunday punch.
00:50:33This guy's
00:50:33his record joke
00:50:34doesn't have
00:50:35a big Sunday punch.
00:50:37He sure doesn't.
00:50:38Only 19 knockouts
00:50:39has 45 wins.
00:50:45That's the end of round 8.
00:50:47Well earlier this evening
00:50:49the arrival of the champion
00:50:51perennial underdog
00:50:52Frank Bruno.
00:50:52This is just moments ago.
00:50:54A national hero
00:50:54in his native England.
00:50:55The normally friendly
00:50:56and gregarious Bruno
00:50:57has been all businesslike
00:50:59this week.
00:51:00For this jovial giant
00:51:02turned surly
00:51:03on the subjects
00:51:04of money and disrespect.
00:51:05Feeling that he's been
00:51:06treated more like
00:51:07the challenger
00:51:07than the champ.
00:51:08Bruno reportedly
00:51:09getting 6 million dollars
00:51:10less than 1 fifth
00:51:11of Tyson's fee.
00:51:13The fans in the arena
00:51:14are reacting.
00:51:15They're seeing Bruno
00:51:16come in on the big screen
00:51:19and he promises
00:51:20to keep the crown
00:51:21in England.
00:51:22He'll have about
00:51:235,000 wild cheering
00:51:24countrymen in his corner
00:51:25with millions more
00:51:26watching back home
00:51:27at about 4 in the morning
00:51:28British time
00:51:28on England's first
00:51:29pay-per-view sports event.
00:51:31There you see the union jack
00:51:32alongside the American flag.
00:51:34Steve, I don't get
00:51:34those sunglasses at night.
00:51:36Could you explain that to me?
00:51:37When he came in
00:51:38and was saying
00:51:38he looks like Joe Williams
00:51:39from the Count Basie band.
00:51:40The guy that used to sing
00:51:41the blues.
00:51:42Maybe he's coming in
00:51:43to sing some blues tonight.
00:51:44He's incognito.
00:51:46Does not want to be recognized.
00:51:47Joe Williams
00:51:48the name from the past.
00:51:50Round number 9
00:51:51for the vacant IVF
00:51:53Junior Flyweight Championship.
00:51:56Boy, Tom Castro
00:51:58if he has any ideas
00:51:59of getting back in there
00:52:00he's going to have
00:52:01to assert himself
00:52:01starting right now.
00:52:03Well, I think the first thing
00:52:04he should assert himself
00:52:04in the corner
00:52:05and start talking back
00:52:06and saying
00:52:06hey, I'm trying all I can.
00:52:08Give me...
00:52:09Stop criticizing me
00:52:10and tell me what to do
00:52:11or tell me what I'm not doing.
00:52:13How can I solve this?
00:52:15I suspect it's just
00:52:16trying to motivate him
00:52:17and I know they've gone over
00:52:18what they're supposed
00:52:18to do earlier
00:52:19and obviously
00:52:21he can't get it done right now.
00:52:22Carvajal's too strong.
00:52:23Punch is too hard.
00:52:24And it's simply
00:52:25a better boxer.
00:52:26Although the last round
00:52:27I thought he did
00:52:28much, much better
00:52:28than he had
00:52:29in previous rounds.
00:52:29He did.
00:52:30Land some clean punches
00:52:31some follow-up combinations.
00:52:33It's the follow-up combinations
00:52:34that needs to concentrate
00:52:35on more
00:52:36because he lands a couple
00:52:37and then backs off
00:52:38and he can't do that.
00:52:39And that's what his corner
00:52:39is telling him, Bob.
00:52:40He said,
00:52:41you can't just land
00:52:41one punch and go back.
00:52:43It's combinations.
00:52:44It's what got you here.
00:52:45Don't start fighting
00:52:45like an amateur again.
00:52:47Bob Castro
00:52:48is a former champion.
00:52:50He won the WBC Light Flyweight
00:52:51title in his American debut
00:52:52and 91,
00:52:53a 10th round TKO
00:52:55of Rolando Pasqua
00:52:56at the Great Western Forum
00:52:57in Englewood, California.
00:52:59Less than 90 days later,
00:53:00his first defense,
00:53:01he lost
00:53:02on unanimous decision,
00:53:03a grueling battle
00:53:04to Chiquita Gonzalez
00:53:06June 3rd
00:53:07in Las Vegas.
00:53:08There was a nice,
00:53:09sharp counter.
00:53:10Once again,
00:53:10he let Carvajal's right hand
00:53:11slip through
00:53:11and followed with the left,
00:53:13but that was it.
00:53:14Then he went back,
00:53:15stepped back
00:53:15to look at what he'd done
00:53:16and you can't do that
00:53:17not being a big puncher.
00:53:18You're not going to see
00:53:18dramatic results.
00:53:22Bob Castro's career
00:53:23started in 85,
00:53:24got up to a slow start,
00:53:25was 3-1-4
00:53:26his first eight fights,
00:53:27turned it around
00:53:28over the next five years,
00:53:29winning 27 of his next
00:53:3128 fights,
00:53:32but only 19 knockouts
00:53:33and 45 victories.
00:53:35All four of his losses
00:53:36by decision.
00:53:37He also has four draws.
00:53:41At least the last two rounds
00:53:43have been more representative
00:53:44of what Bob Castro can do
00:53:46because he's coming
00:53:46ahead to fight.
00:53:47He wants to engage
00:53:48in the battle.
00:53:49It's just that
00:53:50Carvajal's too slick for it.
00:53:51In Carvajal's corner,
00:53:52they talked about him
00:53:53trying to do something
00:53:55a la Chiquita Gonzalez
00:53:56like and as wait
00:53:57for the late rounds
00:53:58and come on
00:53:58and he's certainly
00:53:59trying here.
00:54:00Carvajal's fending him off
00:54:01but not with any
00:54:03demonstrative statements.
00:54:04Bobby, are you impressed
00:54:06with Carvajal
00:54:07or is it that
00:54:07Bob Castro is just not
00:54:09putting up much
00:54:10of a fight against him?
00:54:11Does this mean
00:54:12Carvajal is all the way back
00:54:14or how should we
00:54:14assess the situation?
00:54:15You know, this is a
00:54:16touch-and-go kind of thing
00:54:17because you don't want
00:54:18to take away from a fighter
00:54:19if another fighter's
00:54:19not doing well
00:54:20and you don't want to
00:54:22add to what a fighter's
00:54:22not doing.
00:54:23Michael Carvajal's
00:54:24fighting a smart fight
00:54:24based on what's
00:54:25in front of him.
00:54:26It's an awkward fight
00:54:27because of the
00:54:27southpaw style
00:54:28and the herky-jerky
00:54:29jumping in and out
00:54:30of Castro
00:54:31and I'm not overly
00:54:32impressed with Carvajal today.
00:54:34I thought he was doing
00:54:34something better earlier
00:54:35and now, you know,
00:54:36the little fella's
00:54:37coming on a little stronger
00:54:38so we'll see what he can
00:54:39do here in the closing round.
00:54:42There's a wild miss
00:54:43by Cobb-Castro.
00:54:44He should lock that
00:54:45in a straight right
00:54:46to end the round
00:54:46by Carvajal.
00:54:52in a straight right
00:54:53All right.
00:54:53Acuérdate,
00:54:53cuando te mueves
00:54:54para la izquierda,
00:54:54Michael,
00:54:55agáce y te la cara,
00:54:56gira la derecha
00:54:57y la derecha,
00:54:58¿ok?
00:55:01You'll catch a few
00:55:02right.
00:55:08In combinación,
00:55:09Michael.
00:55:12Lo tienen que mandar
00:55:13a pelear.
00:55:14The guy's saying
00:55:15that's the fight
00:55:15is he winning this fight.
00:55:17OK?
00:55:18The guy's saying
00:55:18it must have broke.
00:55:21Keep the hands high.
00:55:23Keep the hands high.
00:55:24No problem.
00:55:37One of the interested
00:55:39spectators,
00:55:40and it's not even
00:55:40a Laker game,
00:55:41Jack Nicholson.
00:55:43I wonder if he wandered
00:55:44in here by mistake.
00:55:45No, I thought
00:55:46that was a basketball
00:55:47game in here last night.
00:55:48Thumbs up to the camera.
00:55:49Maybe I could ask
00:55:50Jack about the sunglasses.
00:55:51Yeah.
00:55:53Well, round 10.
00:55:54That's right,
00:55:55if anybody would know.
00:55:57I wonder if
00:55:58Cobb Castro
00:55:58realizes he has
00:55:59only nine minutes
00:56:00to become the champion.
00:56:02He's the number one
00:56:02contender.
00:56:03This is for the
00:56:03vacant title.
00:56:05He just doesn't seem to have
00:56:07the power to overcome
00:56:09Carbajal.
00:56:10He's going to the body
00:56:10but doing no damage.
00:56:12Well, to his credit,
00:56:13though, in the past couple
00:56:13rounds, he's pressed ahead
00:56:14and he's made better rounds.
00:56:15He's actually won a round or so.
00:56:17Made one even on my card
00:56:18and he's doing better.
00:56:19He's being more effective,
00:56:21but it's too little too late.
00:56:22I gave that last round to him.
00:56:24He was getting effective.
00:56:24He was getting in there.
00:56:25He's punching.
00:56:26But, you know,
00:56:27not impressive.
00:56:29But compared to what he was doing,
00:56:31he's the world one of action.
00:56:32Cobb Castro in the blow
00:56:33really showing the effects
00:56:34of these punches on his face.
00:56:36Face all red.
00:56:38You know, getting back
00:56:38to the Carbajal back theme,
00:56:41you know, styles make fights.
00:56:42As we know,
00:56:42here's styles that negate
00:56:44both guys not looking good.
00:56:46Carbajal's not looking great.
00:56:47The other guy's not looking good
00:56:48either,
00:56:48and they're both good fighters.
00:56:50Cobb Castro
00:56:51winking away here.
00:56:53See, what he just did there
00:56:54is exactly what he has to do.
00:56:55He threw a nice one-two,
00:56:56a nice right-handed straight left.
00:56:58Both landed clean.
00:56:59He stepped out.
00:57:00Let Carbajal miss it
00:57:00and fired a three-punch combination
00:57:02back.
00:57:02That's how he does
00:57:03what he has to do
00:57:04to win the fight.
00:57:04If he doesn't do that,
00:57:05he can't win this fight.
00:57:06Right now,
00:57:07he may not be able
00:57:07to win it anyway.
00:57:08But that's what his corner
00:57:09was telling me exactly.
00:57:11Just don't punch once or twice
00:57:12and then come back in again.
00:57:14And that's what he did.
00:57:15Exactly what Bobby described
00:57:16just then.
00:57:17It's what his corner's
00:57:17been telling him to do.
00:57:19Coming in,
00:57:20known as an excellent boxer,
00:57:21Cobb Castro,
00:57:22with world-class talent
00:57:23and ability.
00:57:24Let go, let go!
00:57:25But being offset here
00:57:26by Michael Carbajal.
00:57:28A very awkward fight.
00:57:29See, being a fighter
00:57:30that boxes and doesn't
00:57:32really punch
00:57:32and being so short-armed
00:57:34and so short in height,
00:57:35the only way for him
00:57:36to win the fight
00:57:36from the outside
00:57:37is by using so much energy.
00:57:38Get all the way in
00:57:39and all the way out
00:57:39and all the way back in
00:57:40that it's just almost impossible
00:57:42to do.
00:57:42The energy level
00:57:42he would need is too much.
00:57:43He has to stay
00:57:44on the edges
00:57:45of Carbajal.
00:57:46As well as we'll get
00:57:46under or around him
00:57:47on top of him
00:57:47and over and counter again.
00:57:49As I said at the outset,
00:57:50the Cobb Castro,
00:57:51usually a slow starter
00:57:52and a fast finisher,
00:57:54we'll see.
00:57:56We are near the end
00:57:57of the fight.
00:57:57It's the end of round 10.
00:57:59Scheduled for 12.
00:58:02Watch your heads.
00:58:12Cobb Castro feels
00:58:13as he's wearing Carbajal down
00:58:15for a big finish.
00:58:17You see there,
00:58:17instead of slipping,
00:58:18what he did is
00:58:18he threw two punches,
00:58:20blocked Carbajal
00:58:20and then fired back.
00:58:21At least do something,
00:58:22but he's got to throw back.
00:58:24He's got to out-throw Carbajal
00:58:25because his punches are lighter.
00:58:27They're quicker,
00:58:27but they're much lighter
00:58:28in what they do
00:58:29in the way of power and damage.
00:58:30Certainly a lot more action
00:58:31from Cobb Castro now.
00:58:34We approach the final
00:58:3510 seconds of round 10.
00:58:39Well, now he's doing
00:58:40what he has to do.
00:58:40He's winning the run.
00:58:41He's out-working Carbajal,
00:58:42which is what he needed
00:58:42to do earlier.
00:58:45Round 10 of the books.
00:58:47Let's go over to Jim Gray.
00:58:50All right.
00:58:51Thank you very much,
00:58:51Steve Albert.
00:58:52I'm joined by two former champions
00:58:54in the heavyweight division,
00:58:55Michael Spinks
00:58:55and smoking Joe Frazier.
00:58:57It's been 25 years
00:58:58since Ollie Frazier won.
00:58:59I'm great, Joe.
00:59:00How do you see Tyson Bruno?
00:59:01Well, I would say
00:59:02it's going to be a good fight
00:59:03as long as it lasts.
00:59:05I don't know how long
00:59:06I'm going to last
00:59:06and I don't know
00:59:07the condition of the young man,
00:59:09but Tyson should be ready
00:59:10and Bruno has been there
00:59:12for a long time
00:59:13so that he should be ready
00:59:14to go too.
00:59:1552 years old.
00:59:16You're looking great.
00:59:17Let's turn to Michael real quick.
00:59:18Michael, your thoughts
00:59:19on Tyson and Bruno.
00:59:20I'm interested to see
00:59:22just how it go.
00:59:23I'm wondering if Tyson
00:59:24had enough work
00:59:25before he went,
00:59:26before he takes
00:59:27such a big step
00:59:27going for the championship.
00:59:29and I know how it feels
00:59:31to hold such a crown,
00:59:32a coveted crown
00:59:33as the heavyweight championship
00:59:34of the world.
00:59:35So I think Bruno loves
00:59:36what he has
00:59:37and I think he's going
00:59:38to take Tyson
00:59:40a lot of work to.
00:59:41Would you want a rematch
00:59:42with Tyson
00:59:42should he win?
00:59:43Would I want one?
00:59:44Yes.
00:59:45I'll fight anybody for a fee.
00:59:46Anybody for a fee.
00:59:48Tyson, Goliath.
00:59:50Might go longer
00:59:51than the 90-something seconds.
00:59:53For sure, for sure.
00:59:55All right, let's go back
00:59:56to Steve Alpert.
00:59:57All right, Jim.
00:59:57Too much Vaseline
00:59:59on the face
00:59:59of Cobb Castro.
01:00:01Actually, the referee
01:00:02said, let Jim Gray
01:00:03finish the interview
01:00:04and then we'll start.
01:00:05So, Jim, you know,
01:00:06he's big since he's been
01:00:07doing football and stuff.
01:00:08Very accommodating.
01:00:09Hey, Jim's just
01:00:10not any little body.
01:00:11He's big.
01:00:12Joe Frazier
01:00:13just celebrating
01:00:13the 25th anniversary
01:00:15of Ali Frazier.
01:00:16And, of course,
01:00:17Michael Spinks
01:00:18who was obliterated
01:00:18by Tyson in the fight
01:00:19just before Tyson Bruno
01:00:21in 89.
01:00:22March 8, 1971.
01:00:23I was nine years old.
01:00:24The first impact
01:00:25Joe Frazier had on my life.
01:00:26I cried myself
01:00:27to sleep
01:00:27because I was
01:00:28a big Ali fan.
01:00:29I talked about it
01:00:30with Joe and Ali,
01:00:30but, you know,
01:00:31what a fight that was.
01:00:34Indeed.
01:00:35We ended up
01:00:35that fight
01:00:36in the hospital
01:00:37getting x-rayed.
01:00:38I mean,
01:00:38that was some night,
01:00:39that fight.
01:00:41A lot of people
01:00:42were crying that night.
01:00:43All right,
01:00:43we're into
01:00:43the championship rounds
01:00:45here
01:00:46for the IVF
01:00:47Junior Flyweight Championship.
01:00:49Michael Carvajal
01:00:50in the white trunks
01:00:51is the number two contender.
01:00:53He has been controlling
01:00:53the fight with his power.
01:00:55And the number one challenger
01:00:56in the blue trunks,
01:00:57Melcher Cobb Castro,
01:00:59who's had his difficulties here.
01:01:00But finally coming on
01:01:01to fight like he should have
01:01:03been fighting
01:01:03from the first round.
01:01:04This is the type of fight
01:01:05he needed to fight
01:01:06from the onset,
01:01:07Ferdy.
01:01:07That's exactly right.
01:01:07He needed to stay closer,
01:01:09block the shots,
01:01:09and just do his best
01:01:11to negate the power.
01:01:12He couldn't make
01:01:13every punch miss
01:01:14and he couldn't stay
01:01:14outside every punch.
01:01:15Takes too much energy
01:01:16to get back inside
01:01:16once again.
01:01:17Well, he's a guy
01:01:18who heats up more
01:01:18as the fight wears on,
01:01:20but he might be
01:01:20too far behind
01:01:22on the scorecards.
01:01:24I think he's quite away.
01:01:26I think he needs
01:01:27a knockout to win,
01:01:27but that's not his
01:01:28thought.
01:01:29And of course we are in late.
01:01:30Well, he's only got
01:01:3119 KOs and 45 wins
01:01:33as we have mentioned.
01:01:35But it becomes a factor here.
01:01:37Those pitter-patter punches
01:01:37not really having
01:01:38much impact.
01:01:40Yeah, they're good
01:01:40for points and that's great,
01:01:42but if you can do that
01:01:42the whole fight,
01:01:43you win a decision,
01:01:44but you're not going
01:01:44to knock somebody out
01:01:45with that type of punching.
01:01:47But the thing that leads you
01:01:49and his fans at home,
01:01:50who are you watching here?
01:01:51You're watching the guy
01:01:52in the blue trunks.
01:01:53That's who's making
01:01:53these fights.
01:01:54The last three rounds
01:01:55you're watching him.
01:01:56You're not watching
01:01:56the other guy.
01:01:57Carvajal is standing there
01:01:58just counter-punching,
01:02:00you know, parrying
01:02:01and so forth.
01:02:01But the guy that's
01:02:02making a fight
01:02:03is Cobb.
01:02:05Cobb Castro's
01:02:05making a fight here.
01:02:06Unless you're in Phoenix.
01:02:08Well, you're backing up
01:02:09Carvajal.
01:02:11It's funny how the fans
01:02:12see the fights,
01:02:14especially when they're
01:02:14behind someone.
01:02:15According to some of my fans,
01:02:17I've almost never lost
01:02:17a fight and that's
01:02:19truly amazing.
01:02:19I appreciate that
01:02:21kind of adoration.
01:02:21You did lose?
01:02:23I don't believe it.
01:02:25Oh, no.
01:02:25And you've got one coming up
01:02:27May 10th against
01:02:28the Vanderhoof.
01:02:29At the big room in the
01:02:30garden where Frazier and
01:02:31Ali had it out and it's
01:02:32certainly a highlight of my
01:02:33life.
01:02:33It's going to be a great
01:02:34thrill.
01:02:35All right, round 11.
01:02:38coming to a close.
01:02:39Less than 20 seconds.
01:02:42Lego, Lego, Lego.
01:02:45Stop.
01:02:45Break.
01:02:46Stop.
01:02:47I'll be pushing.
01:02:47Cobb Castro making
01:02:48a little of a fight,
01:02:49a little of a run
01:02:50at the title here.
01:02:52Not wildly impressive,
01:02:53but he is the one
01:02:53that's doing the fighting.
01:03:07When you hear that 10
01:03:08seconds, he's trying to
01:03:09come in and steal it,
01:03:10okay?
01:03:10No, no, no, no,
01:03:12but he ain't doing
01:03:14shit, all right?
01:03:15That right hand is still
01:03:16landing.
01:03:16I want you to use it more,
01:03:17all right?
01:03:18And when you hear that
01:03:1910 seconds sound,
01:03:22Michael, this is the last
01:03:24round, round 12.
01:03:25Hold on.
01:03:25We'll try and come
01:03:26Mexico, you know
01:03:27the next time.
01:03:28You all right?
01:03:32You can't wait up,
01:03:33Mark.
01:03:33You don't need to
01:03:34run, you don't need to
01:03:34run.
01:03:35You don't need to
01:03:36You don't understand?
01:03:38Rota.
01:03:39You win the runs
01:03:40for a little bit more
01:03:41when you have to
01:03:41have been liquidated.
01:03:42He's a dead man.
01:03:43He doesn't have
01:03:43absolutely nothing.
01:03:45He's liquidated.
01:03:46However, he's fighting
01:03:47with his heart.
01:03:48He's doing the wrong
01:03:50You don't need to
01:03:51There's no other
01:03:52thing.
01:03:52There's no other
01:03:52formula.
01:03:56Three minutes to the title.
01:03:57There is no formula here.
01:03:58Throw punches, he says.
01:04:00Exploit your punches.
01:04:01This guy is liquidated,
01:04:03meaning he's tired,
01:04:04and you're letting him go.
01:04:05You explode with a punch,
01:04:06and then you don't
01:04:07follow it up.
01:04:07Just three minutes of
01:04:09punching.
01:04:09Now go get this guy.
01:04:11All right, round 12
01:04:12for the vacant IVF
01:04:13Junior Flyweight Championship.
01:04:15A title that Michael
01:04:16Carvajal held before.
01:04:20The same title he's going
01:04:21for tonight.
01:04:22He won it in 1990,
01:04:24successfully defended the
01:04:25championship six times
01:04:26before meeting
01:04:27Chiquita Gonzalez
01:04:30in a slugfest in 1993.
01:04:34Carvajal rallied from too early
01:04:35knockdowns to stop
01:04:36Gonzalez in the seventh
01:04:37for his second title.
01:04:38The WBA light flyweight belt
01:04:39defended his titles twice,
01:04:41and now he's trying to come
01:04:42back again and win
01:04:43another championship.
01:04:45You know, I think that
01:04:45Castro may actually finish
01:04:46this fight with too much
01:04:47energy.
01:04:48My trainer, Tommy Parks,
01:04:49always says,
01:04:49if you finish the fight
01:04:50with energy enough to go
01:04:51two more rounds,
01:04:52you cheated yourself
01:04:53during the first 10 or 12.
01:04:54And he's right.
01:04:55Leave it all in the ring.
01:04:57Don't take any home with you.
01:04:58I think if he ever looks
01:04:59at this tape,
01:05:00he's going to regret
01:05:00not fighting like this
01:05:02from round five on.
01:05:04I mean, there was no reason,
01:05:05there's no reason
01:05:06to not fight like this.
01:05:08Obviously, he's a much
01:05:09better fighter than he's shown.
01:05:10He didn't get to be the
01:05:10champion by being a bad fighter.
01:05:12That's why his corner's so mad.
01:05:14His corner says,
01:05:15you've been a champion,
01:05:16you're fighting like an amateur.
01:05:18You're disgracing yourself.
01:05:20You know, he's closing out
01:05:21the fight, making a good
01:05:22account of himself.
01:05:23But again, I think it's
01:05:23too little, too late.
01:05:25Winning the last couple of rounds
01:05:26and now putting together
01:05:27what he can.
01:05:30And Carbajal in pursuit
01:05:31of his 40th win
01:05:33against two defeats.
01:05:35Bob Castro, 45-4-4,
01:05:37coming in.
01:05:40We have seen some
01:05:41surprising decisions
01:05:42here in Las Vegas,
01:05:43as we've talked about before.
01:05:45But this one doesn't seem,
01:05:48there really doesn't seem
01:05:48to be much question about it.
01:05:50Michael Carbajal in control.
01:05:54Oh, it would shock me, Steve.
01:05:56It would take a lot
01:05:56to shock me, Steve.
01:05:58Well, aren't you with us
01:05:59with Nigel Benn?
01:06:00There was a guy
01:06:01that gave Nigel Benn
01:06:02that fight by two points.
01:06:05That was just a few weeks ago.
01:06:08Overwhelming beating
01:06:09that Nigel Benn got.
01:06:10Against Tulane,
01:06:11sugar boy Malinga,
01:06:12and on that night,
01:06:14he announced his retirement
01:06:16on the ring, Mike,
01:06:16and also proposed
01:06:17to his girlfriend.
01:06:18It was quite an emotional moment.
01:06:19And now he's taken back
01:06:20to retirement.
01:06:21He's trying to include
01:06:21the proposal in the same thing.
01:06:23I don't know.
01:06:23I was dizzy.
01:06:24I don't know what I was saying.
01:06:25Can you imagine
01:06:25if the girlfriend said no?
01:06:26That's a bad night.
01:06:27That was a bad night.
01:06:28You lose the title
01:06:29and then she says no.
01:06:30You know, we joke about those things.
01:06:31It's the last round.
01:06:32We joke about those things,
01:06:33but I'll tell you what,
01:06:34after a fighter loses
01:06:34a tough fight
01:06:35with a world championship
01:06:36on the line,
01:06:37sentiments come
01:06:38in all shapes and sizes.
01:06:40Less than 20 seconds,
01:06:41round 12,
01:06:42for the vacant
01:06:43IVF Junior Flyweight Championship.
01:06:46Meltzer Cobb Castro
01:06:47coming on,
01:06:48but too late
01:06:49from this vantage point.
01:06:53Michael Carvajal
01:06:54pretty much controlling
01:06:55most of the fight
01:06:58from the beginning.
01:06:59And there you have it.
01:07:00As Jane 80 says,
01:07:02the fight's over.
01:07:05And now they'll tally up the cards.
01:07:07Bill Graham of Las Vegas
01:07:08Tom McDonough of Tacoma
01:07:09and Dave Moretti of Las Vegas,
01:07:11the three judges.
01:07:13Kind of ended
01:07:13in the reverse of its start.
01:07:15It started to look like
01:07:16it was going to be
01:07:16a total shutout
01:07:17of embarrassment
01:07:18just to announce your card,
01:07:19but this guy
01:07:20made it interesting
01:07:21in the card.
01:07:21He's got three or four rounds
01:07:22to play with here.
01:07:23I mean, you know,
01:07:25stranger things
01:07:25have happened in my life.
01:07:27He gave them away.
01:07:28Yeah, he did.
01:07:29Well, despite
01:07:32the tirades
01:07:33of Ignacio Nacho Beristain
01:07:35in his corner,
01:07:35he just did not respond
01:07:37the way Beristain
01:07:39would have liked him to.
01:07:41Beristain has trained
01:07:42eight world champions,
01:07:43including the upcoming
01:07:45Ricardo Lopez
01:07:45and the much-talked-about
01:07:47Shakita Gonzalez.
01:07:50And Michael Carvajal
01:07:51seems pleased
01:07:52with his efforts.
01:07:56All you kids
01:07:57at the park,
01:07:57this is for you.
01:08:01Nice sentiments
01:08:02by Michael Carvajal
01:08:04extending word
01:08:06to the kids
01:08:06back in the Phoenix area.
01:08:08He is from the streets
01:08:08of Phoenix,
01:08:09trains in his backyard.
01:08:10The 9th Street Gym
01:08:11converted
01:08:13from an old church
01:08:14on 9th Street,
01:08:15renamed it
01:08:15the 9th Street Gym.
01:08:19Michael Carvajal
01:08:20looking to make it
01:08:2140 wins
01:08:22against just two defeats,
01:08:23those two losses
01:08:24to Gonzalez
01:08:24with 25 knockouts,
01:08:26but this one goes
01:08:27the distance
01:08:28all the way
01:08:28as we wait
01:08:29for the official decision.
01:08:33And it is taking
01:08:34some time
01:08:35and you wonder why.
01:08:38Then again,
01:08:39as we've mentioned
01:08:39time and time again,
01:08:40we are in Las Vegas, folks.
01:08:44where anything
01:08:45can happen.
01:08:48Melcher Cobb-Castro
01:08:49came on strong
01:08:50but probably too late.
01:08:57And we're just about set
01:08:59to send it over
01:08:59to Jimmy Lennon Jr.
01:09:01for the decision.
01:09:02Ladies and gentlemen,
01:09:03after 12 rounds
01:09:05of action,
01:09:05we have a unanimous
01:09:07decision.
01:09:07Here are the score
01:09:08totals.
01:09:09Judge at ringside,
01:09:10Bill Graham,
01:09:11scores the bat
01:09:11115 to 113.
01:09:15Judge Tom McDonough
01:09:16scores the bat
01:09:16117 to 111.
01:09:19And Dave Moretti
01:09:21sees the bat
01:09:21at 116 to 112.
01:09:25All three in favor
01:09:26of the winner
01:09:27of the vacant
01:09:28IBF Junior
01:09:29flyweight title,
01:09:31Michael Carbajal.
01:09:35So there you have it.
01:09:37It's a clean sweep.
01:09:38All three judges
01:09:38had Michael Carbajal,
01:09:40115-113,
01:09:42117-111.
01:09:44Biggest disparity there.
01:09:45And 116 to 112.
01:09:47Michael Carbajal
01:09:48recaptures the
01:09:49IBF Junior
