00:03...some future champions. We'll take a look at a couple of heavyweights.
00:06Tommy the Duke Morrison, undefeated at 20 years of age, coming off not his best performance against Lorenzo Kennedy.
00:12He wants a big win here tonight. Hopefully he can get it and push on toward what he hopes is
00:16contention.
00:17Ray Mercer, merciless Ray Mercer, the Olympic champion in the heavyweight division in the Games in Seoul,
00:24is 11-0 as a pro. He, too, coming off a win against Jerry Jones that was not his best
00:29effort.
00:29He's fighting former cruiserweight champion Ozzy Ocasio, a one-time heavyweight contender.
00:33This will be a true test for Mercer.
00:35And what about Andrew Maynard, who will come up in our first bout this evening, the protege of Sugar Ray
00:40Leonard.
00:40He won the light heavyweight gold medal in the Olympics, and he is taking on Mike DeVito, a journeyman who
00:46could give him a struggle.
00:47Okay. All right, Al. Thank you so very much. It's time to get everything going with our bout tonight,
00:52so let's go once again to ringside, and here is Tim Ryan. Tim?
00:56All right, Jim. First up in the light heavyweight division, it'll be Andrew Maynard against Mike DeVito.
01:03Eight rounds. The scheduled distance of the 25-year-old Andrew Maynard, a gold medalist at the Olympics,
01:09a star as an Army boxer, has now won eight without a defeat in the heavyweight ranks.
01:15It's against 28-year-old Mike DeVito. He has a record of 11-3-2 with eight knockouts.
01:20He is the champion of the state of Ohio, a more experienced boxer, and for Maynard, each timeout now taking
01:26on somebody of this type.
01:27A little step up, somebody with a little more experience to give him the needed seasoning.
01:35Under the state of Nevada rules, three judges will score the fight of the 10-point month system.
01:39There is no standing eight count in Nevada, and the three-knockdown rule is in effect.
01:43If somebody goes down three times in a round, the fight is stopped, and you can't be saved by the
01:47bell except in the final round.
01:49So now let's go up for our ring introduction to Michael Buffer.

02:53And now, ladies and gentlemen, let's get things started with eight rounds in the light heavyweight division.
02:58The referee for this first bout is Toby Gibson.
03:04Introducing first, fighting out of the red corner, he's wearing the black trunks with white trim,
03:09and he weighed in at an even 174 pounds.
03:12He's from Cleveland, Ohio.
03:14As a professional, he's 11, 3, and 2.
03:18Eight KOs to his credit.
03:19In his home state, he holds the Ohio State Championship in this division.
03:23Let's hear it for Mike DeVito.
03:30And with his home, fighting out of the blue corner, wearing the black trunks with gold letters,
03:36he weighed in at 173 and 3 quarter pounds.
03:39He's from Laurel, Maryland, undefeated as a professional, with a record of 8 and 0, all victories by knockout.
03:46Ladies and gentlemen, he's a 1988 Olympic gold medalist.
03:50The initials are B, A, M, and they stand for Boxing, Andrew Maynard.
04:04Andrew?
04:10It's okay, gentlemen.
04:11I've given you your instructions in the dressing room.
04:13Are there any questions?
04:15No.
04:15Let's throw some leather and keep it clean.
04:17Good luck to both of you.
04:20Final instructions from referee Toby Gibson for this fight.
04:24The judges are Lurie, Chuck Jump, and Bill Graham all from Las Vegas.
04:27You're looking at Mike DeVito, 28 years of age from Cleveland, eight knockouts in his 11 victories.
04:32In this corner, Al Brooks and Elsa Tibbs.
04:35Andrew Maynard is managed by Sugar Ray Leonard.
04:37And has Stephanie Correa, who will be in the corner training Sugar Ray Leonard tonight, working during this match.
04:45Andrew Maynard in the black trunks, DeVito, and black with white trim, and were underway scheduled for eight round one.
04:51Him watching Andrew Maynard, I don't think it was necessary for the referee to say, let's throw some leather.
04:56We know, we know he throws a lot of leather.
04:59Andrew Maynard, in his last fight, a fifth round knockout of Carlton Williams.
05:04He's knocked all eight of his opponents so far.
05:06So this is the first time I've ever seen him mainly come out with no sweat.
05:13Normally, he gives you a good warm-up before he comes into the ring.
05:15You think he did less of that, or perhaps they tell him off, what do you think?
05:19Yes, that's what I figure.
05:20You know, he looks too relaxed, too calm, like he knows that he's going to go and just knock this
05:24guy out.
05:24He probably already figured this guy out.
05:28Well, there's a good left hook from DeVito.
05:30That'll get Andrew Maynard's attention early here in round one.
05:35You know, Mark, this first round, these guys get caught cold.
05:38Anything can happen.
05:39Yes, well, you know, you should loosen up very well before you come out here.
05:44Temperatures, by the way, and we'll be mentioning it during the course of the evening,
05:47are expected in the high 40 outdoors here in Las Vegas.
05:51The latest fight has been held outdoors in this state.
05:54It is really a quite pleasant evening with no breeze.
05:57And now you notice that Andrew Maynard has dropped that left hand right down to his side.
06:03Well, you know, this is a big, this is a big moment here for my man here.
06:07It's a big moment for DeVito because fighting a guy from the Olympics like this here,
06:11he can shoot right up into a world type of fight.
06:16Andrew Maynard showing that good foot speed and something that he's continued to work on.
06:21Of course, he has the influence of his manager, Sugar Ray Leonard,
06:24and indeed even has some castles on his shoes to add a little notice to his footwork.
06:28But DeVito is so far not intimidated.
06:31Lands a couple of shots to the chin.
06:35Well, Tim, this is not the Andrew Maynard that we know.
06:37He's being a real cutie in there tonight.
06:40Exactly.
06:41I feel the same way.
06:44Maybe he should take the tackles off.
06:46Well, this kid here, all he needs to do, DeVito,
06:49is to throw the right hand a little bit more at Andrew.
06:52Good jamming by Maynard.
06:58You know, this manager's picking up his left hand now.
07:02Well, now it's down again.
07:03You've got to keep up with him.
07:06Overhand right scored by Maynard.
07:08Good defense by Maynard at that time.
07:10Mixed off the counterpunch by DeVito.
07:12But DeVito don't seem like he's scared him at all.
07:17Maynard misses in the wild, right?
07:19But don't say no ties him up.
07:23I feel like so, as many that loosened up very well and came out kind of sweaty.
07:27This fight would end very short.
07:31He's got that left hand down on the side again.
07:34Another wild right miss by Maynard as DeVito picked it up well again.
07:38Well, we know Tommy Hearns has that habit, but he's a professional.
07:42He's the one.
07:43Let's see what Pepe Correa, his trainer, has to say to Andrew Maynard here.
07:50Spectacular view of the new Mirage Hotel.
07:52And we're in the DeVito corner with Mike DeVito and his hammer, Del Brooks, and Elza Tiff.
07:57Oh, yeah, right here.
07:59Hey, what are you doing out there?
08:01He's doing a hooking.
08:02All right, listen to me.
08:05He's dropping the heat.
08:06Dropping the left hand here.
08:07After he's jabbing me, drop.
08:08Follow right in.
08:08Step in with your right hand.
08:09Understand?
08:10Look at him.
08:11You caught the hook.
08:12You caught his collar right out there.
08:13Come on.
08:14Think out there.
08:15Yeah.
08:15So do you.
08:16Hey, Hudson.
08:17Hey, Hudson.
08:19Told you.
08:19If it's out there, turn out here.
08:21Turn up the middle and turn up.
08:22Stop it back over.
08:23Think about it.
08:24Think about it.
08:25Well, Sugar Ray Leonard making his appearance over at the dressing room area for the main event
08:30and upcoming Leonard and Duran, Uno Mas.
08:35Well, in round number one, Maynard threw 64 punches to DeVito's 23, and we did score the round for Maynard,
08:44but so far he hasn't frightened DeVito any.
08:48His knockout home run blows to his rhythm missed badly.
08:53He defines the range in round two.
08:55Well, he seems to have settled down a little bit more now, Tim.
09:02Tim Ryan with Joe Clancy and marvelous Marvin Hagler.
09:05We are live from the Mirage in Las Vegas, Nevada.
09:08Opening bout of the evening for our telecast, Andrew Maynard and Mike DeVito, light heavyweight.
09:18Upcoming, he'll be seeing Olympic champion Ray Mercer setting young Tommy Morrison.
09:23And, of course, Leonard Duran three.
09:37You know, Gil, I believe that if Menna keep that left hand up a little higher,
09:41he could be more effective with that left jab instead of dropping it down there.
09:47Well, you know, I guess Pepe Correa, his trainer, has a reason for him to drop that left hand.
09:52Probably loosens him up a little bit.
09:54But, you know, DeVito is not boxing bad defensively, Marvin.
09:58You can see he's got experience.
10:00Well, Gil, on my part, I think that after watching Menna fight before,
10:04this guy DeVito, he's given the best contact in the first round.
10:09Well, as Tim Ryan mentioned, each time Menna fights, he steps up a little bit in class.
10:15But I've never seen him so slow in the beginning of the fight.
10:19Soon he comes in and takes control.
10:22Well, he's missing now.
10:23Missing badly.
10:26Well, again, gentlemen, I think these young fighters, they probably try to impress.
10:31They're on a big fight card.
10:33They know they have a national television audience and opening a new hotel.
10:36And I suppose they think about looking good instead of what their normal routine is.
10:42And he hit DeVito at a pretty good right hand.
10:44And it woke DeVito up.
10:46I don't know.
10:47And it's a good left hook from Maynard.
10:49Well, DeVito's getting a little careless now.
10:51He's him careless.
10:54And DeVito tying up Maynard in the corner.
10:56Showing a little experience there.
10:59Look, that stunned him.
11:02DeVito in trouble as Maynard jumps on him.
11:07DeVito takes a straight right down the pipe.
11:09Now fires back, but he's got nailed again.
11:12He's got nailed with another right.
11:15We're in round two scheduled for eight.
11:18One punch.
11:18Turned it around for Maynard.
11:20As you know, DeVito keeps ducking in for the right hand.
11:22He's set up for the right hand shot.
11:24And you can see Maynard.
11:26Look at him getting that range.
11:28Talk about range finders.
11:29He knows he's going to dip.
11:30And when he dips, Maynard throws the right hand.
11:33DeVito manages to tie him up and takes his top left.
11:36For the body.
11:37If I was man, I would fake the punch.
11:39And then shoot the right hand.
11:41Fake it.
11:42Then see him dip.
11:43And then when he comes back up, tag him.
11:45Round number two completed.
11:47And Andrew Maynard picking up the base.
11:49One shot.
11:50Turning it around late in the round.
11:51Bell.
11:52Here we go.
11:52Here's what I'm asking, baby.
11:54Okay.
11:54We just found this guy's a sucker for on that hook.
11:56All right?
11:57Off the jab.
11:57Try to set him up a jab off the hook off the jab.
12:00He's a sucker for on that hook.
12:02All right.
12:02Send that sucker for on the right hand combination.
12:03He had it.
12:04All right.
12:05Okay.
12:06All right.
12:06Let's take a look at Andrew Maynard operating now.
12:09There's a left hook.
12:10Oh, right in the eye.
12:11That must have hurt him.
12:13That was the one punch that just literally turned around for him.
12:16Because to that point, he still seemingly was frustrated by not being able to get the kind
12:22of pressure on he likes to put on an opponent.
12:23Well, he's really, really throwing punches and punches now.
12:26There's another right hand that misses.
12:28Tim, I can tell you the reason why.
12:30Because this guy, every time he knows the punch coming, he closes his eyes.
12:34You don't know where he is.
12:36Another look at that damaging left hook.
12:38So we head into round number three.
12:41Scheduled for eight.
12:42Mike DeVito from Cleveland, Ohio.
12:44Andrew Maynard from Laurel, Maryland.
12:47He came out all business this round, Tim.
12:51He's sweating now, too.
12:52He's loosening up.
12:55I would fake the left hook and wait for him to come up and hit him with the right hand.
13:00Gil.
13:01Landed a good left hook and that wobbled, DeVito.
13:04Well, that's a peppy career in the corner, said he's a sucker for a left hook.
13:10His eyes are closed and his head is down.
13:14Overhand right to the ear by Maynard.
13:18DeVito's starting to look a little worse for wear, Tim.
13:25I don't think too many people do.
13:27He's doing the same thing, Gil.
13:29Well, what you're saying is Maynard throws a punch.
13:31He's insulted if he gets missed by it.
13:33That's it.
13:34I mean, I think he wants to show how tough he is and take a punch.
13:37He's tough.
13:38When he does get hit, he tries to fight back.
13:40He's a little bit off balance most of the time.
13:43See, I think he closes his eyes and he turns, he looks at the ground.
13:47You're right.
13:47He doesn't keep his eyes on Maynard, which is the guy that he's in the ring with.
13:51Don't hit me.
13:56Maynard picking up the pace of corner, yelling to him to set up that left hook.
14:00But again, a little over-anxious here.
14:04He's looking at the canvas, the way he's going to land at.
14:16I don't understand why Maynard is moving around like this now.
14:20You beat me to the punch, Bob.
14:21I was just going to say that.
14:22It's not necessary.
14:23No.
14:23All he has to do is keep his hands up.
14:25Take it to him.
14:26Snap that jab, fainted, and put the punches together.
14:29He's allowing DeVito to get back into the fight a little bit.
14:33At least, you know, get his coordination back.
14:35By DeVito.
14:38Now, a little hot talking by Andrew Maynard here as we come down to the minute mark in the third
14:42round.
14:44Maynard must have been looking at the tape of the second minute Durant fight.
14:49Exactly.
14:50Now, you could frame him.
14:52Maynard trying.
14:54The right-hand leads as a home run ball, and he hasn't been able to land one.
15:00Come on.
15:01Come on.
15:02DeVito, they collected the body low.
15:06Good right-hand lead scored that time by Maynard.
15:12Under 30 seconds we go.
15:13In the third round, scheduled for eight, and a right-hand line by DeVito.
15:17Very nice right hand by DeVito.
15:21DeVito should be putting more pressure on Manning if he wants to win this fight.
15:25He cannot sit there and be stationary.
15:31Final seconds of the third round.
15:43Going back to the corner of Andrew Maynard, Maynard Pepe Correa.
15:45Duck it down to your left hook.
15:47I want that hook underneath more, baby.
15:48Get that hook underneath.
15:50Got to have that hook underneath, right?
15:51Okay.
15:52Okay, the hook is the key here.
15:54The hook is the key here.
15:54Now, people now.
15:56Okay, I got the back of the table.
15:57Why can't you stay right here?
15:58Come on, baby, boy.
16:00All right.
16:01Everything is under control.
16:02I don't like those damn hands down there, little group.
16:04Hey, come on, now.
16:05You're getting all too comfortable.
16:06I want you to box.
16:06You're doing a good job.
16:07We learned to box you a little bit.
16:08But I don't want those hands down there, little baby.
16:10All right?
16:11Hands are too low.
16:11All right.
16:12Inside coat will hand come.
16:14You've been this guy.
16:15You're touching your head too darn much.
16:22I want another one.
16:23Come on, baby.
16:25I'm scared.
16:25Give it.
16:26Come on.
16:28Hey.
16:30Second.
16:34Get back, the mayor.
16:36The left hook from Andrew Maynard, called for by his trainer, Pepe Correa,
16:40but he's missed more than he landed in round number three,
16:43although he has the better of it with the activity that he showed.
16:47We have him three rounds to zip here over to Vito on our unofficial card.
16:54And Pepe Correa told him exactly the same as Marvin and I was discussing.
16:58Keep those hands up.
16:59You don't have to be a fancy fan.
17:01Just move in.
17:02I can't keep that head up to Vito.
17:07Now he's stopped all that lateral movement, Shane.
17:11Well, the Vito is now really putting the pressure.
17:13For a guy like this here, a big statue of Maynard,
17:16he would have to go forward.
17:17Bob and Weed and put the pressure on him.
17:19He's looking at the canvas, and that's where he's going to wind up at.
17:25He takes his eyes off Maynard, you know.
17:28As you know, Mark, a good fighter,
17:30you never take your eyes off your opponent.
17:33Well, he's a little bit outclassed, Mark.
17:35Maynard's too fast for him.
17:37Probably punches a little too hard.
17:39Well, then that's the thing you've got to do.
17:41You've got to go in there and take control.
17:42You cannot outbox this guy.
17:44You cannot punch harder than this guy.
17:46So you've got to fight him, so you must stay tight on him.
17:51You know, Maynard, you can see Maynard's right hand coming before he throws it.
17:54That's why he's been unsuccessful with the Vito.
17:57He's throwing that right hand over his head.
18:00Porter line, Maynard.
18:01Porter.
18:02I know this man is only moving one way, you know,
18:05and that's just to his left all night.
18:07He's moving that way.
18:08Because he said he stopped his lateral movement,
18:09he's only moving one way.
18:13Now, now, Mark, he must have listened to you.
18:15He goes side to side.
18:17Because that's where the Vito's a sucker for right hand
18:20when he moves the other way.
18:26I like the guts that the Vito's is showing tonight, Cole.
18:29Plenty of courage.
18:32I think he's growing in confidence a little bit, too,
18:34because he's through three rounds against this young bomber
18:38that everybody's talking about, shouting as a champion,
18:40and I think Vito feels that he can do a little more with him
18:43under a minute to go, round four.
18:45And the Vito has done some punches with conviction this round.
18:47And he has.
18:49It was, you know, he stopped.
18:50His head goes down to the canvas,
18:52and he loses where Maynard's at.
19:00I would fake the punch,
19:02and then move to the opposite side of him,
19:04and wait for him to come up and then tag him.
19:06Well, I was just about to say,
19:07when he looks at the ground like this,
19:09just walk around behind him and tap him on the shoulder.
19:12So here I am.
19:13Because he certainly does not know where Maynard is
19:16when he puts that head down and looks at the floor.
19:19He's very easy to figure out
19:20because he does a pain routine all the time.
19:22But anyhow, Mavi's still in there,
19:23and he's still throwing punches.
19:25I like him.
19:26He's gutsy.
19:27That's something they don't teach you in the gym.
19:30Final seconds of the fourth round.
19:32Scheduled for eight.
19:36And it comes out the fifth round KO of Carlton Williams
19:39in his last outing.
19:41He's still in control of this fight,
19:44but he's still in control of this fight.
19:46A little bit of frustration
19:48and not being able to control of you don't know.
19:50I think, Gil, you said it the right way.
19:53I think he's too flamboyant about
19:55all the crowds that are here,
19:56all these big people.
19:58Which maybe this could be a great experience for him
19:59in the long run.
20:01But right now,
20:01he's got to concentrate on the guy
20:03that's against the ring from there.
20:04That's right.
20:05And, you know, he was complaining.
20:07I think he was complaining about his thumb in the eye.
20:08Complaining to something with Pepe Korean.
20:12Well, coming up on our program this evening,
20:15Leonard Duran 3,
20:17live from the Mirage Hotel
20:18in Las Vegas, Nevada,
20:20opening this beautiful facility
20:22along the Las Vegas Strip.
20:26And you'll also be seeing
20:29Ray Mercer.
20:30There's Sugar Ray Leonard
20:31watching his protege
20:33because Andrew Maynard, of course,
20:34is managed by Sugar Ray.
20:37Roger looking on
20:38and no doubt taking a good interest
20:40and he'll file away some things
20:42to talk to Andrew about.
20:44Big right hand by Maynard.
20:45He started the round.
20:46Right on the button.
20:48There was the jab
20:48when the right hand,
20:49when the left hand is up
20:50real nice and high.
20:51He's got a very nice,
20:52clean left hand.
20:53I don't know why he...
20:54Don't use it more.
20:55All right, Marvin.
20:55He just said exactly what you said.
20:57He hit on Tevito.
20:58And when Tevito came up,
20:59then he nailed him.
21:01Maynard starting round five
21:03with a flurry.
21:04Now letting up the pace.
21:08You know, a fighter like this
21:09can discourage you a little bit
21:10when you're hitting with your best shots already.
21:12You need to calm down a little bit
21:14and put your punches more
21:15prospectively together.
21:17And you know,
21:17Pepe Correa told him
21:18he needed to keep his hands up
21:20but now he's got that
21:21left hand down again.
21:23This kid's kind of dangerous.
21:24I wouldn't drop my hands with him.
21:25Both hands down.
21:26He's really being a little too cute.
21:32We know Gil like I do
21:33in this boxing game.
21:34It only takes a second.
21:35And these guys who are very awkward
21:37and everything like that,
21:38they're the ones that get lucky.
21:47I'll never forget the job
21:48that Tommy Hearns was doing
21:49on Irene Barkley
21:51and one punch turned that right around.
21:53Tommy was at it.
21:54Exactly.
21:55And you know,
21:56the same thing can happen here tonight.
21:59Andrew Maynard's people hope not.
22:01He's the 8-0 light heavyweight
22:03that's just going to be
22:04looking for a championship.
22:05Too confident, Tommy.
22:06He looks a little too confident.
22:08Halfway through the fifth round.
22:12And they bang heads together
22:14and that hurt Maynard
22:15as DeVito came up from inside.
22:17And DeVito apologized to Maynard.
22:19And that was the best weapon
22:20that he threw.
22:21Right hand Lee landed by Maynard.
22:23And DeVito fires back.
22:26He's not in there easy, gentlemen.
22:28No, except that he just
22:29takes his eyes off Maynard.
22:31That's one of the problems
22:32even when he's throwing punches.
22:34Ooh, big right hand.
22:35Look at DeVito's.
22:36I'm still here.
22:38But see, this is where
22:38he gets crazy, DeVito,
22:40and he makes bad mistakes.
22:41This is what caused him
22:42that in the first round.
22:43In the second round.
22:45Very, very awkward.
22:46Tough guy to fight, though.
22:47He just bends way down
22:49every time he gets nailed
22:50and he can take a tremendous punch.
22:52We know that.
22:54These type of guys like that
22:55they're very dangerous.
22:56And you've got to wear them down
22:57and then put them out.
22:59You haven't seen much of a body
23:01attack from Maynard.
23:03He's just trying to throw
23:04a home run ball since the opening bell.
23:0930 seconds left in the fifth round.
23:11Scheduled for eight.
23:17Good night.
23:19Come again.
23:20It's looking like over
23:22over minutes that fire
23:23is probably with that
23:24headbutt that they just had
23:25that clash with
23:26Mike causing some problems here.
23:30Coming to the end
23:31of the fifth round.
23:38You're going to see
23:39the big right hand
23:40from Maynard
23:41and you're going to see
23:42that Mike DeVito
23:43from Cleveland, Ohio
23:44stand his ground.
23:45Got butted for head now.
23:46I wonder what
23:47Maynard's thinking about
23:48landing those big shots
23:49and not seeing a guy at all.
23:51If it does, he's got a good
23:53kept man in the corner.
23:54No, no.
23:54He can have to be the best.
23:55All right.
23:57Here comes, Gil.
23:59Take a look at it.
24:00He made it set.
24:01Close it from across the street
24:02and hits him right on the chin.
24:04And all it did
24:05was make DeVito angry.
24:12Let's take another angle.
24:14Right on the butt.
24:16Then you can't get hit
24:16harder than that.
24:18And DeVito's still there.
24:20So, you know,
24:20you have to...
24:22Well, Maynard
24:23on our sports card
24:24as well as control
24:25of the fight.
24:26That frustration
24:28is certainly
24:30going to become apparent here
24:31as he's pounding away
24:32the guy that he thinks
24:34he should have sent
24:35to the shower
24:35some time ago.
24:38Maynard has an angry
24:40whelp over his left eye.
24:43And they've called in
24:44the doctor to...
24:46No, they've not.
24:46Pardon me.
24:47The referee just asked
24:47the trainer to take
24:49some of the stuff
24:50we'll refer to it
24:51off the nick there
24:53and a little swelling
24:54over the left eye
24:55of Andrew Maynard.
24:55Him, it's an angry swelling.
24:57One big punch on that
24:58and it's going to bust wide open.
25:01And as you mentioned,
25:02Marvin, you know,
25:02these awkward guys.
25:04Anything can happen.
25:05They're very dangerous.
25:06You've got to get them
25:07out of there right away.
25:08You cannot play with guys
25:09like this.
25:12You know he's going to duck
25:13every time you go
25:14to throw a punch at him.
25:15He's going to duck down
25:16to his right-hand side.
25:18Fake it.
25:19There you go.
25:21Combination landed by Maynard.
25:22Let him go to me.
25:23Let him go.
25:24Fuck out there.
25:25But I've got to give the veto
25:26a lot of credit.
25:27He's gutting and he's come to fight.
25:30He's not worried about
25:31Maynard being an Olympic champion
25:33or nothing.
25:34I think fans often wonder
25:36about these so-called opponents
25:37because they're treated like that
25:39by the media when they come in
25:40against these young rising stars
25:42and the opponents don't always
25:44feel the same way as everybody
25:45watching the fight.
25:46They're coming to make the
25:47best shot at a win.
25:49And you know Maynard's trying to
25:50punch a little too hard.
25:51Tim.
25:52Hard comes by itself.
25:53You have to throw the punches
25:54straight and correctly
25:55and preferably short.
25:58Maynard with a good combination
26:00inside.
26:02Just for the left.
26:03Now look where that left-handed is.
26:08I mean I think that Maynard's
26:09game a lot.
26:10Another right-hand scored by Maynard.
26:13He's throwing the proper right,
26:15the left hook.
26:15He's throwing the right punch.
26:17So he's not coming back
26:18with the right hand.
26:19Or he should throw the left hook
26:20and then come back to the right.
26:21They come right back
26:22with the left hook again
26:23to catch him.
26:25Right-hand lead, Lance.
26:26Now come back to the right.
26:27Hit them all night
26:28with that right hand now, Tim.
26:31And now DeVito's left eye
26:32is starting to swell.
26:34I think that that left of the body
26:35kind of stung on DeVito
26:37to win that one.
26:37Well that's where Maynard
26:38should have been going
26:38a lot more often.
26:39Of all the punches
26:40have been to the head.
26:41That's why he's missed so often.
26:44He can take those punches
26:45to the head.
26:46Now let's go to the body.
26:47That's exactly right.
26:48Let's fight something else.
26:50Another minute to go
26:51on the sixth round
26:52of the scheduled eighth rounder.
26:55This is not the minute
26:56that we've seen before, Tim.
26:58Now he's only been
26:59six rounds once before.
27:00And he's bouncing all over.
27:01Look the way he's moving
27:02those legs.
27:03The guy we knew
27:04was a guy that was settled down
27:06that can really bomb
27:06and get you out of there.
27:08He's becoming a cutie.
27:11And he's getting tagged.
27:13DeVito's good right hand
27:14right there by DeVito.
27:20In the 30 seconds we go.
27:23Round six.
27:28You know, man, it is
27:29Barnabar catching punches.
27:32This poor right hand lead
27:34and just almost really paid
27:35for DeVito just missed
27:37with his counter.
27:38He does because you know
27:38the reason why, Gil.
27:40He drops his punches
27:41after he's finished throwing
27:42it.
27:42He dropped his hand.
27:48Well, that's the end
27:49of round six.
27:50And this will be new territory
27:51for Andrew Maynard
27:52as a young professional.
27:53He's never been more than
27:54six stopping.
27:56Don't let me hear you.
27:57John Keyes back in May
27:58in the sixth round.
27:59What are you talking about?
28:00Oh, well, yeah, you don't stand
28:02so that's what he was
28:02the type of fighter he is.
28:04Close up, look at the little
28:05swelling over the left eye
28:06of DeVito.
28:07Nothing bleeding, nothing
28:08bleeding, you're not
28:09got nothing on it.
28:10For the sake, you're not
28:11doing nothing to do anything
28:12against him.
28:13He stands there and doing
28:14his little jigs.
28:16Meanwhile, in Andrew
28:17Maynard's corner, you can
28:18see the swelling over his
28:19left eye, which I believe
28:20came from a butt, an
28:22accidental butt.
28:23OK, all right.
28:27Looks like they've done a
28:28good job in there.
28:29Eddie Aliano at 8th
28:30corner, one of the
28:30veterans.
28:31Keep that out of here.
28:31Come on.
28:32One more, one more.
28:33I will.
28:35I think we'll see the
28:36contact here, Gil, right
28:38there as they flashed heads
28:39DeVito coming up and
28:40Maynard leading in.
28:43Wasn't very clear to me,
28:44Tim.
28:46So into the seventh round,
28:48Andrew Maynard for the first
28:49time as a professional.
28:51You know, Tim, you talk about
28:52guys getting butted in fights.
28:55One thing I would never do
28:56when I manage fighters, I
28:57would not let my fighters
28:59fight a bald-headed guy.
29:00I knew you.
29:01And none of your fighters ever
29:03did fight Marvin Hagler.
29:04That's right.
29:04I've been looking for that guy.
29:07Who's ever going to take it?
29:08That head becomes a weapon,
29:09I'll tell you that.
29:11Oh, get into promo in there.
29:12He's a better head.
29:15He's a better head.
29:15Seventh round, scheduled for
29:17eight.
29:17Light heavyweights, Andrew
29:18Maynard at 173 and three
29:20quarters, DeVito at 174.
29:22I really cannot see how come
29:23Maynard is not using his
29:25Olympic type of fighting that
29:28has got him here.
29:29He's becoming a cutie, Marvin.
29:31Bouncing all over the place.
29:33It's not necessary.
29:33Just settle down.
29:35Throwing his punches and not
29:36coming back and being defensive.
29:41Right-hand lead.
29:42He's been more effective landing
29:44that, but he hasn't been able to
29:45move DeVito with it.
29:47Marvin's right.
29:48When DeVito bends like that,
29:50manage to just relax and wait
29:52for him to straighten up.
29:53That's it.
29:55Guy can't get out of there.
29:56He's going to have to come up
29:57sooner or later.
29:58Fake it.
29:59And here it goes down.
30:00I did that with Durant.
30:01I would fake it.
30:01Durant would dip and I would
30:03kick him with it.
30:03Now listen, Leonard may hear
30:05that now.
30:05That's not fair.
30:07No, we saw Ray Leonard watching
30:09and no doubt listening to the
30:11fight because Andrew Maynard is
30:13one of his protégés.
30:16He's going to be a star protégé
30:17at the moment.
30:17There's another right landed
30:19by Maynard.
30:20And he hasn't been able to get
30:21DeVito to back up.
30:22DeVito plants his feet.
30:24He's right there.
30:25Now he's, earlier when
30:27Maynard would throw that
30:28right-handed land, DeVito
30:29would really get angry and
30:30punch back.
30:31Now he's just taking the punches.
30:33He's right-hand.
30:34That's a very punch that
30:35manager's taking the right
30:36hand lead right on that
30:38swollen eye.
30:40Drop in the hand.
30:42You know, with your
30:42fundamentals and in this fight
30:44here, you'd have to go back to
30:45your fundamentals.
30:45That's exactly right.
30:47Solid, solid platform.
30:49Set yourself.
30:51Well, Andrew is celebrating
30:52the birth of his first baby
30:53daughter.
30:54He's probably still got his
30:55mind elsewhere.
30:56Maybe he didn't get much
30:56sleep last night.
31:00Ashley is newborn.
31:01Congratulations to the
31:02Maynard.
31:02Right-hand lead and DeVito
31:04stays right there again.
31:05This time, Maynard came back
31:06with the hook, though, Tim,
31:07which he hasn't been going.
31:09Yeah, but now he's not
31:10finishing.
31:18I believe DeVito has
31:19problems.
31:20When Maynard moves to his
31:21right-hand side, DeVito
31:23cannot find him.
31:24Well, like that, like that,
31:26just then, Mark.
31:27He's stopped.
31:28And it's frustrating right there.
31:29He's stopped.
31:30I would move all the time to my
31:31right-hand side.
31:32Keep it straight up the middle.
31:32That's what I think, man, is
31:33right now is starting to feel.
31:35This guy keeps flying on that
31:36side.
31:38Coming to the end of the
31:39seventh round.
31:40See, there you go.
31:44DeVito's a shot to the body,
31:45and he's angry.
31:46You can see DeVito's frustrated,
31:48but he is still hanging in this
31:50fight.
31:51We haven't given him around, but
31:52boy, he's making it difficult
31:53for Maynard.
31:54Coming up, our main event,
31:56Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto
31:57Duran, Uno Mas, the rubber match
32:01meeting in this exciting trilogy,
32:03and there's Ray Leonard watching
32:04Andrew Maynard, and I think there
32:06might be a little lecture for
32:07Andrew when Ray gets back in the
32:09gym.
32:10They both finished their business
32:12here tonight.
32:13We're still awaiting the arrival
32:14at the Mirage of Roberto Duran.
32:17We're told he's not yet on the
32:18ground.
32:19We're here early, and no doubt
32:22partly because he wanted to watch
32:24Andrew in action.
32:25Well, Tim, when I manage and
32:27train fighters, I always brought
32:29them to the arena early.
32:30No sense coming in the last
32:32minute and rushing your hand
32:33bandaging, rushing your strategy
32:35talk, rushing your warming up.
32:37I like to bring the guys early
32:38and let them relax.
32:39I like that when a guy comes
32:40early.
32:41Another little element to add
32:42into the mix of the main event
32:45upcoming.
32:46That has happened to be a couple
32:48of times, and you're
32:49right, Gil.
32:49I agree with you.
32:51They use gloves and get to the
32:52ring quick, and you don't have
32:53time to warm up that soon.
32:55Eighth and final round, Andrew
32:57Maynard and Mike DeVito, and
32:58Mike DeVito, an unknown
33:00journeyman from Cleveland, Ohio,
33:02as the champion of the state,
33:04doing Ohio proud here against the
33:05Olympic champion, Andrew
33:07Maynard.
33:12It's difficult for us to score
33:14a round for DeVito, but as we
33:15point out, this has certainly
33:17been a good experience for Andrew
33:18Maynard because DeVito's a tough
33:19guy.
33:21And, Tim, you know, we have been
33:21criticizing Andrew's performance
33:24to some extent, and yet he's won
33:25every round.
33:26He hasn't been in any danger
33:28except for the swelling over his
33:29left eye.
33:30Well, you know, I'm sorry, Gil.
33:32I would have to congratulate
33:33DeVito for hanging in there with a
33:35guy who's a champion like that.
33:36You would have to give the credit
33:38to him for DeVito.
33:40Well, yes, he's completely out
33:41blast in a fight.
33:42You can see that Maynard has so
33:44much more talent.
33:46But he's not using this.
33:48He's showboating a lot too much.
33:50That's why at the end of that
33:51last round, DeVito was angry,
33:53like Maynard was showing him up.
33:55You know, even the general public
33:56doesn't like that, you know?
33:57Now, you couldn't get hit harder
33:58than DeVito just got hit.
34:00Walked right into a straight right
34:01hand.
34:02Now we have to start questioning the
34:04punching power.
34:05I think he's cut now under his
34:08eye, the left eye.
34:10Well, that's a good point, Gil,
34:12and there is a cut at the left
34:14eye of DeVito.
34:16But Andrew Maynard, I think,
34:19much of the time has just not
34:20given himself the opportunity to
34:22put two punches together.
34:24He's landed a lot of those right
34:25hand leads against the strong guy
34:26and hasn't moved him.
34:28Well, Tom, I think now this is
34:29the score.
34:30Both of them will get a cut over
34:31the eye.
34:33Although DeVito's bleeding
34:36more profusely here in the final
34:37round, looks like it's right at
34:40the corner of the eye so far is
34:42not a vision problem.
34:43And Andrew did not throw a
34:45punch.
34:46He hit on DeVito.
34:47DeVito didn't know where he was.
34:48And when DeVito finally
34:50straightened up, man didn't throw
34:51a punch.
34:53Moved around real nice.
34:54Move it to his right hand side.
34:56And that's what I would do if I
34:57was, man, I would move to his
34:58right hand side all night long.
35:00Especially now to the cut.
35:02Final minute of the fight.
35:03We're down to the 40-second mark.
35:06You don't have to knock DeVito
35:08out.
35:08All he can do is just use that
35:09jab and work on the cut.
35:10Alan, you know, he's one hand
35:12was one every round against an
35:14awkward strong guy.
35:19This guy DeVito is very awkward.
35:21You know, he fights in one way
35:24and he cannot change.
35:27Maybe he's a softball.
35:30He could fuse.
35:34Maynard's gotten a lot of road
35:35work in on this fight.
35:36I'll say that.
35:37It's been a good physical
35:38workout for him.
35:39He's used up all of this 21-foot
35:41ring.
35:41That's the worst.
35:42That's the worst workout.
35:43That's the worst.
35:44That's the worst.
35:45At the end of it, eight rounds
35:46of light heavyweight action and
35:48a tough Mike DeVito from
35:49Cleveland, Ohio.
35:51You can see bleeding, but a brave
35:53warrior indeed against Andrew
35:55Maynard, who would appear to be
35:56an easy winner by decision, but
35:58not an easy winner in the sense
36:00of being able to put a guy away
36:03that he probably thought he
36:03could.
36:04But there's the big right hand
36:06as he started to really level
36:08those in in the last four rounds,
36:10finding the range and DeVito
36:12becoming a more easy target for
36:13him.
36:14But never sent him to the
36:15Kansas.
36:16There's the one that really opened
36:17the cut up and blood started to
36:20flow freely following that
36:22punch.
36:29As our punch that figures would
36:32indicate, it was just been
36:33handed to us here as we see that
36:35punch again from Maynard.
36:37DeVito just unable to put any
36:39hurt on Maynard at any point.
36:40The best example in round 80
36:42through 17 punches didn't land
36:43one.
36:45So there is the total punch, as
36:47you can see Maynard, the much
36:48busier and more effective fighter
36:50of the two, and we expect a
36:53unanimous decision from Art
36:54Lurie, Chuck Jamp, and Bill
36:55Graham.
36:56And let's go to our ring
36:58announcer for the decision,
36:59Michael Buffer.
37:01Ladies and gentlemen, here's the
37:03official scoring.
37:04Art Lurie and Chuck Jamp both
37:05scored about 79-73.
37:08Bill Graham scores at 80 to 71
37:10for the winner.
37:11By unanimous decision, still
37:14undefeated boxing, Andrew
37:16Maynard.
37:18Well, Andrew Maynard wins his
37:20ninth victory against no losses
37:22as a young professional at the
37:23light heavyweight ranks.
37:25Goes to 9-0 with a unanimous
37:26decision over Mike DeVito.
37:28There he is, a handsome guy, a
37:30great personality, and no doubt
37:32destined to be an outstanding
37:33boxer, but finding his way along
37:35through the pros against tough
37:36guys like Mike DeVito and trying
37:38to look and appear to be a little
37:41better than he is right now.
37:42So he's going to have a few more
37:43difficult evenings like that.
37:45There's a look at the beautiful
37:46Mirage, and 16,000 people are
37:49virtually all packed in here now
37:51as we await Leonard Duran 3.
37:53Now let's go to our host, Jim
37:55Hill.
37:57Okay, Tim, thank you so very
37:58much.
37:59You know, one of the things that
38:00the fans here, the six and a
38:01rising star, he will take on
38:03Ozzy Ocasio, who's a former
38:04cruiserweight boxing champion.
38:06It's a heavyweight bump and
38:07coming up right now.
38:08So let's go back once again to
38:09Tim Ryan at ringside.
38:10Tim.
38:11Thank you, Jim.
38:13We're about ready to go with the
38:14heavyweights and celebrity-packed
38:17audience is ready to see this
38:19gold medalist, merciless Ray
38:21Mercer against Ozzy Ocasio, and
38:23like his teammate, Andrew
38:25Maynard, Mercer stepping up in
38:26class against a very experienced
38:28boxer.
38:29Thank you, Jim.
38:29Thank you, Jim.
38:29Thank you, Jim.
38:29Thank you, Jim.
