00:00:06Well, if the fight is half as spectacular as that, then this will be quite a night in
00:00:12boxing history.
00:00:12Let's go down to Ryan and get things going.
00:00:16All right, Al, I certainly agree with you.
00:00:18We have the champions of fireworks, the Grooches, with that incredible display.
00:00:24And Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard will now try to top it in the much-anticipated
00:00:29Uno Mas.
00:00:30And Duran, who came in at 158 pounds, having started to prepare for this fight back in
00:00:38August, nearly 200, and he is lean and mean-looking.
00:00:42Did it take too much out of him?
00:00:44Well, it's one of the several questions to be answered.
00:00:49Duran making his way toward the ring here at the Mirage.
00:00:54This crowd, pumped by the fireworks display, should greet him with quite a roar.
00:01:03What a career it has been for the legendary Ana Cipriandra.
00:01:08What a career it has been for the legendary Ana Cipriandra.
00:01:12Thirty-eight years of age, a stunning victory over Iran Barkley at age 37.
00:01:17That got him here.
00:01:24Just approaching now, ringside area.

00:02:13Roberto Duran the WBC middleweight champion 92 professional fights 61

00:02:46Hibbert a man he gives great credit to for getting him into shape and longtime
00:02:51handler Nestor Quinonez Sugar Ray Leonard attempting yet another milestone in his
00:03:02career after nearly a five-year layoff coming back to defeat marvelous Marvin
00:03:08Hagner and win the middleweight crown a victory over heavyweight light heavyweight
00:03:13Donnie Lalonde for yet another title
00:03:18the draw against Thomas Hearns the fight which did not satisfy Ray Leonard and no
00:03:24doubt encouraged him to give Roberto Duran
00:03:34not too often you see a boxer come into the ring wearing a hat of any kind but a wool
00:03:39cap on
00:03:39the head of Sugar Ray it is still cool he's been warming up in his dressing room and he doesn't
00:03:44want to come in here and get cold all of a sudden temperatures in the high 40s here in Las
00:03:49Vegas
00:03:51now Sherlock Ray Leonard being seen by the sellout crowd here for the first time
00:04:06you
00:04:20Sugar Ray Leonard, the WBC super middleweight champion, 35 victories, one defeat at the
00:04:26hands of Roberto Duran, a binge in New Orleans and coming in with a warmup suit, kind of
00:04:33karate-style warmup suit, 33 years of age, weighed in at 160, Roberto Duran, 38 years of age,
00:04:42coming in at 158 pounds, and we have learned, as Gil Fancy reported earlier, that this will be for
00:04:49just the one title, the super middleweight crown held by Sugar Ray Leonard, that's by agreement
00:04:54between the boxers, their management, and the WBC. Well, in fight number one, you can see that Duran,
00:05:0050 punches average per round, landing 18 of those, and in the second bout, just 29 thrown
00:05:08and 17 landed. Duran in the average department for number one, 60 punches a round, landing 43.
00:05:18The WBC rules, three judges scoring a fight on the 10-point must system. There is no three-knockdown
00:05:25rule under the World Boxing Council. And now let's go up for the introductions to Michael Buffer.
00:05:30Ladies and gentlemen, good evening and welcome to the Mirage here in Las Vegas, Nevada.

00:06:33all been waiting for, let's get ready to rumble! 12 rounds of boxing for the WBC Super Middleweight
00:06:42Championship of the World. The referee for this bout for the 69th time in a world title bout
00:06:49is Richard Steele. Introducing first, fighting out of the blue corner, he weighed in today at 158 pounds
00:06:59even. In 92 professional bouts, he scored 85 victories with 61 KOs and garnered four world
00:07:08championships. Tonight, he is the challenger again. Señoras y señores, con el barrio Churillo
00:07:15en la ciudad de Panamá, el hombre con los manos de piedra, Roberto Tura!
00:07:36And waiting out of the red corner, he's wearing the black trunks and weighed in at an even 160
00:07:41pounds from Potomac, Maryland. This 1976 Olympic gold medal champion has a professional record
00:07:48of 35 victories. 25 by KO against only one defeat and one draw with six world championships
00:07:56in five different weight divisions. Ladies and gentlemen, presenting the WBC Super Middleweight Champion
00:08:04of the World, Sugar Ray Leonard!
00:08:22Okay, I spoke to both fighters in the dressing room. I'm cautioning you again. Obey my commands at all times.
00:08:28Shake hands. Good luck.
00:08:30Richard Steele, the referee with the final instructions. Tim Ryan with Gil Clancy and former middleweight champion
00:08:36of the world, marvelous Marvin Hagler, ready now for 12 rounds for the WBC Super Middleweight crown held by Ray
00:08:42Leonard.
00:08:44The crowd about evenly divided by the best my ears can say. There are a lot of Durian fans here
00:08:50as expected.
00:08:51And a good contingent of Leonard fans will find out who cheers the loudest as the fight progresses.
00:08:59Round number one.
00:09:11I think we're going to see this plan of Ray Leonard moving side to side, trying to frustrate Roberto Duran
00:09:18the way he did in the second fight.
00:09:20And when he gets the opportunity, he will throw punches.
00:09:27Those legs are going to hope that they carry him through this fight.
00:09:32Shooter Ray Leonard down twice in the draw against Tommy Hearns, his last outing.
00:09:37Durian knocked down Iran Barkley on route to a 12-round decision.
00:09:41Well, they're both faking each other, faking the punches, both trying to pull each other out right now.
00:09:45So, neither one of them is trying to get careless from the first.
00:09:54You know, Durant throws that jab out, but he doesn't really try to hit anything.
00:09:58It's just like a range finder waiting to see what you're going to do.
00:10:02Then he looks to nail you with the second punch.
00:10:04Well, Leonard just landed a nice left hand.
00:10:06That was the first punch of the fight right now.
00:10:10You're going to see Ray doing a lot of this, covering this big ring side to side.
00:10:1721 feet inside the ropes of this ring.
00:10:20He's using all of it in his first round.
00:10:24Good jab by Leonard.
00:10:26Ray looks very good. He looks in good shape.
00:10:28Looks in good shape, but he hasn't landed a punch as yet.
00:10:30Well, that one there, the first, the right hand to the side of Leonard's head.
00:10:33A good left back from Leonard.
00:10:37Well, I think that the people must admit that it's good to see him back in here to regain himself.
00:10:43Both guys in good condition.
00:10:46Left of the body by Duran.
00:10:53Combination scored by Leonard.
00:10:55Well, that's what you're going to see from Ray Leonard.
00:10:57And you notice he's using that jab the way he did in the second fight, Tim.
00:11:02According to the punch that he used it twice as much in the second fight as he did in the
00:11:07first.
00:11:07So I think you're going to see him working off that jab.
00:11:13Duran has a very quick right hand himself.
00:11:15Yes, he does.
00:11:16He can't be stationary too long.
00:11:18Nice right hand by Leonard.
00:11:19They both want to end this fight early.
00:11:27Tremendous concentration by Leonard here in this first round.
00:11:30The innovation of what he said that has been the primary means of training for this bout.
00:11:37Concentration.
00:11:38Tim, I would say concentration by both fighters.
00:11:49Body shot from Leonard.
00:11:50The best of that exchange.
00:11:56He's trying to frustrate him again already from the start.
00:12:00End of round one.
00:12:07Well, remember that there are fans looking in who have an opportunity to decide how the course of this fight
00:12:14is going.
00:12:14There's the information.
00:12:15Our diet Pepsi.
00:12:16Phone in your vote.
00:12:18Well, this is the first time that I've ever seen anyone in the corner with a blanket on.
00:12:22And Leonard's wrapped up in a blanket so it won't.
00:12:24And that is a very smart move on Leonard's part because it's very, very cold here right now.
00:12:30They're keeping him warm between rounds.
00:12:32And I mean, right, Roberto is sitting there.
00:12:34They just threw water on him.
00:12:35Yeah.
00:12:36I mean, he doesn't even have a towel wrapped around him.
00:12:38Well, he still haven't worked up that sweat either.
00:12:40He may not ever.
00:12:41Not if they keep throwing cold water on him, Bob.
00:12:43But this is good.
00:12:44Like you said, the blanket does keep the heat in.
00:12:46And it's not the first time I've seen a blanket, Marv.
00:12:48I've seen it used many times before.
00:12:51Well, you know.
00:12:52In the old days.
00:12:53You're right, Bob.
00:12:53In the old days.
00:12:55Temperatures here in the 40s at fight time in Las Vegas.
00:12:59Round number two.
00:13:00Scheduled for 12.
00:13:07Well, Durant is really going to have to take it too many.
00:13:09Well, what Ray is going to look to do, blow him to sleep a little bit side to side, get
00:13:15in, hit him with good combinations, and then get back out again.
00:13:20Durant surely is expecting this attack, though, gentlemen.
00:13:22He cannot be surprised.
00:13:24No question about it.
00:13:25That's interesting.
00:13:26So his question, the question about Durant, then, is how patient can he be?
00:13:30How effectively can he cut off the ring?
00:13:38Well, you can see he's trying to cut the ring off now on Lennett, you know?
00:13:41And that's a smart thing to do.
00:13:48But as you know, you cannot let Lennett get the lead in the beginning of the fights.
00:13:55I would suspect that Durant would have to throw some punches.
00:13:58Right-hand lead landed by Lennett, a counter return by Durant.
00:14:05The main thing which I worry about, by Durant getting down to 158,
00:14:09get his zap in his energy, and we'll find out in the late rounds.
00:14:16This fight here, they both played the same game.
00:14:19Durant is like that also.
00:14:23Durant getting a little more range, counter-punching,
00:14:26and lands a good right to the body.
00:14:30Durant has always been known as a good body puncher anyway.
00:14:34Well, he is getting the range a little bit now, Tim.
00:14:37A little low by Roberto.
00:14:39Left hook lead scored by Lennett before the low blow return.
00:14:44But like I said, both of these guys, there's no difference in them
00:14:47because they both know each other.
00:14:59Ray is trying to feel his legs under him.
00:15:06Now, Ray, for the first time starting to smile,
00:15:08look a little more confident, a little more relaxed.
00:15:14Yeah, well, that's the same thing he did against Tommy.
00:15:16It makes you know he went down.
00:15:21Now a little of a return to New Orleans stuff.
00:15:24He's working on Roberto's mind right now.
00:15:28So far, there we go.
00:15:30He's working on Roberto's mind.
00:15:31The first Bolo move.
00:15:33Bolo move and ended followed by the jab.
00:15:35That's what he did in the second fight.
00:15:37Here he is side to side again.
00:15:38And Roberto hasn't changed his pattern one bit.
00:15:43Well, I think Roberto knows that he's got to get Lennett
00:15:45to come to him when they throw punches.
00:15:47But now when they got into a punching exchange,
00:15:50Leonard was able to out-punch him and then get out.
00:15:52Get out.
00:15:52And this is where Duran has to follow back
00:15:55and continue to throw punches.
00:15:57This is what Duran is trying to do.
00:16:00End of round number two.
00:16:01Let's follow Ray Leonard back to his corner.
00:16:03Pepe Correa, the trainer.
00:16:04It's gonna be like this all night long.
00:16:06It's gonna be like...
00:16:07Come on, come on, Mike.
00:16:08It's gonna be like this all night long, fellas.
00:16:10All right.
00:16:11Quarterback.
00:16:12Mount pieces coming out this round.
00:16:14Okay?
00:16:15Get that bass lean back on his face again.
00:16:16Okay?
00:16:17Ray, we go with the double sticks.
00:16:19Unless you plan the floor right hand off a single jab,
00:16:21we go with the double sticks.
00:16:22Okay?
00:16:23Now, he don't lock it in the body.
00:16:24I can see it already.
00:16:25You're trying to get a chance dealing the body,
00:16:27but you want to go to the body with both hands.
00:16:28You drop off a jab, you drop a hard right hand to the body,
00:16:31come back with the left hook to the head.
00:16:32Got it?
00:16:43We're joined at ringside by former world bantamweight champion
00:16:46Richie Sandoval, and we plug him in,
00:16:49and he will be interpreting for us the corner instructions
00:16:52given to Roberto Duran,
00:16:54and we'll pick that up between the next rounds.
00:17:01Round number three.
00:17:04We've scored the first two for Leonard.
00:17:07The second one a little more convincingly than the first.
00:17:10Duran looks a little tight.
00:17:12Those two rounds are looking tight.
00:17:14Duran looks like Duran.
00:17:16He looks like Duran right now.
00:17:17This is exactly the way he fought Duran Leonard both times.
00:17:20He doesn't rely on a good snappy jab.
00:17:22He just pushes it out, waits for something to happen,
00:17:25and then tries to count on him.
00:17:26Yes.
00:17:28But every time when they're in the round,
00:17:30he'll shake his arm.
00:17:31He's still not loose yet.
00:17:34Roberto is going to have to nail Ray with a big punch,
00:17:37slow him down a little bit.
00:17:41Down to right by Duran,
00:17:43and then Leonard ties him up.
00:17:45I believe that Ray feels that he's a lot stronger this time
00:17:48than when he was the first two times, Ray.
00:18:03And the difference between Leonard fighting a Duran and a Tommy Hearns
00:18:07is that Tommy Hearns was a big, tall guy.
00:18:10And when he thought he was out of Tommy's range a couple of times,
00:18:14that's when he got nailed.
00:18:15But Roberto was a short guy,
00:18:16so he just keeps Roberto where he wants him,
00:18:20and Roberto just can't quite reach him.
00:18:22Not up to this point, anyhow.
00:18:24Ray has said privately that he's welcome to be,
00:18:28glad to be boxing a smaller man for the first time
00:18:31in his last three bouts.
00:18:34Hagler, Lalonde, Hearns.
00:18:35Right-hand lead landed,
00:18:37but he paid for it with a right return from Duran.
00:18:42But Duran is watching very, very good.
00:18:45He's not trying to make any mistakes,
00:18:47and then he's waiting for Leonard to punch,
00:18:48and he can count it.
00:18:52Leonard quickly off the ropes.
00:18:56After another round of this,
00:18:57they'll go right back into the first two fights.
00:19:00No difference in the styles.
00:19:02Well, Pepe Correa and Leonard's corner said,
00:19:04trying to nail him to the body.
00:19:05Doesn't like those body shots.
00:19:06That could be for taking all that weight off in a hurry.
00:19:09No, no, no!
00:19:12Well, what's funny, they've both been,
00:19:14they've both been, well, Leonard's been knocked down twice,
00:19:16and Duran's been knocked out.
00:19:18So they both should have some kind of confidence
00:19:20knowing that one of them can go.
00:19:24And Leonard nailed him,
00:19:25and Roberto just shook his head,
00:19:28which is an old Latin trick.
00:19:30Yeah, well, Duran, when he's in the inside,
00:19:31he's fighting kind of sloppy.
00:19:33His timing is off a little bit.
00:19:37Leonard's concentration is just great in this fight.
00:19:41A thinking man's fighter.
00:19:43That's Ray Leonard.
00:19:48Final seconds, round three,
00:19:51and there's the little nostalgia from New Orleans.
00:19:54If he keeps this up, he's gonna drive Duran crazy.
00:19:58That may be the idea.
00:20:02And a little mugging as they head back to their corners.
00:20:06Duran's gotta stop trying to fight,
00:20:07Leonard's fight, and go in there and throw punches.
00:20:10Well, so far, Leonard has a perfect fight plan.
00:20:13He's gonna always be late.
00:20:14Don't get Macho with him, man.
00:20:16Get Macho to lay the rims.
00:20:18He's gonna always be late.
00:20:19Okay?
00:20:20Too much speed for him to the boat.
00:20:27The exchange along the ropes with a nice move out by Leonard,
00:20:31and a left hook at the end of it.
00:20:32Hey, hey, give myself a double tap.
00:20:41Let's take another look at that.
00:20:42You can just see Ray.
00:20:43Ray's on balance.
00:20:44Duran isn't.
00:20:45And there's that left hook.
00:20:47And Duran shook his head.
00:20:49No, it didn't hurt.
00:20:50But it scored a point.
00:20:52Well, that's what's frustrating Duran right now.
00:20:54He don't want to get hit at all.
00:21:01Round number four.
00:21:03Scheduled for 12.
00:21:05Then this quarter told him not to go get cocky on him now.
00:21:08Well, they said save the Macho stuff for later in the fight.
00:21:11They expect Duran to wind down.
00:21:15Well, this is the time if Leonard's gonna do anything
00:21:17to get Duran now,
00:21:19because Duran might start to loosen up.
00:21:22He can't get near Ray then,
00:21:24and Ray is keeping Duran exactly where he wants him.
00:21:49He's throwing that hand out there, the left hand out there.
00:21:51That's what Duran does.
00:21:52He doesn't snap a jab,
00:21:53but he just paws with the left hand.
00:21:55Yes, but now I can read it
00:21:56that Leonard's trying to catch him.
00:21:58He's gonna need that right hand.
00:21:59He's gonna throw the right hand
00:22:00on top of that left jab.
00:22:03Well, that's if he wants to take that chance, Ma,
00:22:05because Duran keeps that right hand of his cock.
00:22:08That's what he's waiting for you to do.
00:22:10But Duran is letting Leonard rough him up.
00:22:13Also, when they get in tight.
00:22:17Low blow from Leonard.
00:22:21First connecting jab from Duran.
00:22:23Not much on him.
00:22:26Leonard's fought him before,
00:22:27so they kind of feel very comfortable in there.
00:22:37No damage.
00:22:40Inside now, Leonard with an uppercut.
00:22:45Leonard has to...
00:22:46You keep using that left jab.
00:22:47He can't forget the jab.
00:22:49Now he's moving around.
00:22:50He's not snapping that jab out.
00:22:51There's a good jab.
00:22:53Leonard's trying to use psychology
00:22:55and the movement.
00:22:56He's trying to put all these things together right now
00:22:58against Duran.
00:23:00And he's got Duran hesitating.
00:23:02Right hand by Duran.
00:23:04Started it with a left jab
00:23:05and landed the right behind it.
00:23:07Duran has to get closer.
00:23:10Really bang heads in there.
00:23:12Both trying to get close.
00:23:15Duran has to show that he's just as strong as Leonard.
00:23:28A lot of dancing in these early rounds.
00:23:30It has to be a question as to how long he can keep that up.
00:23:33Well, there's a moment of truth in every fight, Tim.
00:23:36Eventually they're gonna settle down.
00:23:39Richard Padova's mouth is bleeding at the moment.
00:23:43There is some blood on the lower lip.
00:23:45It may be...
00:23:46Or the teeth were driven into the front of his mouth.
00:23:49He also could be a head.
00:23:51It is bothering Ray Leonard.
00:23:53There's no question about that.
00:23:58Good jab to finish the round.
00:24:00Come on.
00:24:03Come on.
00:24:04Come on.
00:24:05Take this look.
00:24:06No problem.
00:24:07Give me back now.
00:24:09Well, Durant looked a lot better that round.
00:24:14Hey, Rupp.
00:24:14No problem.
00:24:17OK?
00:24:18I need more jams.
00:24:21I need more jams.
00:24:23OK?
00:24:24When you do this side, come tuck them right here.
00:24:26I want them to come to the side and slide right back out.
00:24:28OK?
00:24:28A little more body.
00:24:29Give me a second.
00:24:29I want to take the back of the basket.
00:24:33What a bucket.
00:24:34Do you want to take the mouth?
00:24:35I want to take the mouth right there.
00:24:37Keep still.
00:24:38Keep still.
00:24:39There we go.
00:24:41OK.
00:24:42Apretado ahora.
00:24:43Anotele con el jab.
00:24:45OK.
00:24:45Entiende?
00:24:46Y empieza a buscar esa derecha.
00:24:48Empieza a buscar esa derecha.
00:24:50Heyte, compa.
00:24:51Controla ahora.
00:24:52Promete-me.
00:24:54Richie Sandoval, what were they telling Durant?
00:24:56They're telling Roberto to put more pressure and then come up to the court.
00:24:59Come on with the right hand.
00:25:01You know, lead off with the right.
00:25:03In the round number five.
00:25:06You know, this may help.
00:25:08The fact that Leonard is bleeding may help Durant psychologically.
00:25:11Because Leonard was playing games with his mind.
00:25:14But now Roberto sees that there is some damage to Ray Leonard.
00:25:17Might give him a little pep.
00:25:19Well, you know what's bad, though.
00:25:21Leonard's getting away with a lot of dirty attackers right now by putting their arms down on
00:25:25Roberto's head every time he gets in close.
00:25:27And the referee is not seeing it.
00:25:31That's the old Ali's trench.
00:25:33And in Leonard's corner, they complained to the referee that Durant butted him.
00:25:37That's what caused that cut inside his mouth.
00:25:40Well, I think it may well have, but as I recall the incident, both heads came together.
00:25:45I don't think there was any intention at all.
00:25:47Oh, absolutely not.
00:25:49Of an intentional butt.
00:25:50Well, Durant is definitely trying to put the pressure on Leonard, no.
00:25:56Again, Rob, there's gonna be some time in this fight when they're gonna settle down and fight.
00:26:01Then we'll see.
00:26:03Meanwhile, Leonard can steal his mouth, and the blood is streaming out of Leonard's mouth right now.
00:26:08Then it is probably bothering Leonard right now.
00:26:13Leonard is gonna have to get a little bit more aggressive.
00:26:16He's moving around, moving around.
00:26:17Now he threw a big right here, but missed by a mile.
00:26:21He has to remember that left jab.
00:26:23That's Leonard's key weapon right at the moment.
00:26:26Richard Steele warning Durant for hitting on the break,
00:26:29and now stopping time to have Tate prepare on the left glove of Ray Leonard.
00:26:36Tim, we were talking about the crowd reaction.
00:26:38I think the crowd right now has been swayed to Roberto Durant's side.
00:26:42A lot of booing that time when referee Richard Steele stopped it.
00:26:48But Leonard now, you know he will settle down now because now he's tired to try to punch for the
00:26:52bigger man.
00:26:53Leonard is a pretty tough kid.
00:26:54Gets right down to the nitty-gritty.
00:26:56I expect Ray to stay in there and throw those combinations.
00:27:00Now you can hear the crowd again.
00:27:01Duran, Duran.
00:27:24Duran could want this here fight too much.
00:27:27That'll take you up.
00:27:33Very little offensive movement on Ray Leonard's part at the moment.
00:27:38Well, and Duran, for his part, has been very patient during the first four rounds, it seems to me,
00:27:43expecting what he's seeing and letting Ray circle and move.
00:27:55Well, Duran's been looking like he's been concentrating more on the body.
00:27:59And as again, you can see both guys are missing shots that they never would have missed before.
00:28:04Well, 38 and 33 will do that to you, Marvin.
00:28:09End of round number five.
00:28:12I think Duran hates him too much.
00:28:14Let's go back into the fourth round, and we'll see where we believe the contact occurred that caused the cut
00:28:19inside Leonard's lip.
00:28:21See, they both go in together, and that's a pretty good smack there.
00:28:24No question that that's where it occurred, driving Ray's mouth into his teeth.
00:28:30All right, now, Tim, with the WBC rules, if Richard Steele did not rule out a butt,
00:28:36if Ray has to stop it, they have to stop the fight because of this cut, he's gonna be the
00:28:40loser.
00:28:41Unless Richard Steele said, yes, it was caused by a butt, and I don't think he did.
00:28:45There it is again.
00:28:46That's a vicious butt, and again, not intentional on Roberto Duran's part as far as I'm concerned.
00:28:52Well, you know, I like to say, you know, in New Jersey, they have to wear gloves now because of
00:28:56the AIDS thing.
00:28:57And look at him putting his fingers in the Ray's mouth.
00:29:01Well, we're in Nevada.
00:29:04That's one difference.
00:29:05I'll tell you one thing.
00:29:06That was a great idea.
00:29:07That rule from Jersey wouldn't work good tonight because then their hands would stay warm because it's cold.
00:29:13Eddie Aliano having to do work on the mouth of Ray Leonard.
00:29:18We're in a round six scheduled for 12.
00:29:20And for the first time, really, Duran got the range with the jab.
00:29:25Well, I think maybe the blood coming out of Manny's mouth can't help.
00:29:28You see?
00:29:30Ray slipped.
00:29:30Took a left, but he slipped as the flow landed.
00:29:33Ray is gonna have to get back and do a little more offensively.
00:29:37He's letting Duran pull him around, chase him around the ring.
00:29:42Duran once just wanted anything.
00:29:44You could feel it.
00:29:45You could see it in his eyes.
00:29:46Duran there really trying to close him to the corner.
00:29:49Ray tied him up effectively.
00:29:51He wants to knock Ray out.
00:29:56But you can't do it one shot.
00:29:59Ray is very, very hesitant.
00:30:00I think he's very conscious of that cut lip.
00:30:03Punch it out. Don't hold it.
00:30:04It's bothering him.
00:30:05Protect yourself. Protect yourself. Protect yourself.
00:30:07Look at that.
00:30:08How do you like that?
00:30:10A warning from Richard Steele for that.
00:30:14Well, he also told Duran, protect yourself at all times.
00:30:17Don't fight, Duran!
00:30:19Don't fight!
00:30:20Don't fight!
00:30:20Don't fight!
00:30:20Don't fight!
00:30:20Don't fight!
00:30:22Don't fight!
00:30:22Don't fight!
00:30:23This part of the ring, Leonard always seems like he has a little problem.
00:30:26Good left hook by Ray Leonard.
00:30:27Good left hook.
00:30:28Count him.
00:30:39Right hand lead landed by Leonard.
00:30:42Duran ties him up.
00:30:43He's gonna have to start throwing some punches, Tim.
00:30:52Duran is pressing Leonard, but every time Leonard faints, Duran stops.
00:30:57I mean, he's not exactly the most aggressive guy in the world.
00:31:00He's giving the impression that he is.
00:31:02Don't fight! Don't fight!
00:31:03Don't fight!
00:31:04Land on the left of the body.
00:31:09Leonard circled out of the corner easily.
00:31:11Now Duran sits in there, hoping to drop in.
00:31:13Nice combination by Leonard.
00:31:14Good left hook.
00:31:15Good left hook.
00:31:16Good right hook.
00:31:17Other left.
00:31:19Well, Duran gambled there and lost, and now Leonard picks up the pace.
00:31:23A good left and a right behind it.
00:31:25And he thinks he has Duran hurt.
00:31:29Well, I told you, Tim, that he's settled down eventually, and he has.
00:31:35Duran trying to tie him up.
00:31:37This is what Duran wants to fight, but he's not doing nothing.
00:31:42This is the right way to fight, Leonard.
00:31:43Now you can limit this much rest back.
00:31:45Right hand by Leonard.
00:31:47A left to the body counter from Duran.
00:31:50That got Ray's attention.
00:31:52He nailed Duran with another right hand.
00:31:54And then Nambolo here, punching on the break.
00:31:57And a right-hand lead.
00:31:58And a right-hand lead by Leonard.
00:32:02And Duran is not punching back.
00:32:06A smile from Duran will not get it done.
00:32:09End of round six.
00:32:10I believe that no mass really affected Duran.
00:32:15In what way, Marvin?
00:32:16I think he really don't like Leonard, and he's all tight.
00:32:19He wants to kill him, but he can't do anything about it.
00:32:21You haven't said anything.
00:32:46A right-hand lead by Leonard will have Richie Sandoval tell us
00:32:50what they're saying to Duran.
00:32:51Carlos Hibbert complained to Richard Steele about the refereeing.
00:32:55And there's the bolo with...
00:32:56But that was a foul, Tim.
00:32:58Richard Steele warned him improperly because he...
00:33:02Look at him pull Roberto's head down.
00:33:05And Ray Leonard is a tough guy.
00:33:08Carlos Hibbert yelling at Referee Steele, who did warn Leonard.
00:33:12Now, Richie Sandoval, what did they tell Duran?
00:33:14Hibbert was yelling at Roberto, telling him,
00:33:17Oh, come on, we're behind right now.
00:33:19We're way behind right now.
00:33:20We've got to get going.
00:33:21We've got to get something started.
00:33:23Well, Hibbert agrees with us.
00:33:24We've got Leonard comfortably ahead at this point
00:33:26into round seven.
00:33:27I think Duran is not fighting the fight
00:33:30that he really wants to.
00:33:32Very half-hearted left hook to the body by Roberto Duran.
00:33:37Tim Ryan with Gil Clancy, marvelous Marvin Hagler,
00:33:40former bantamweight champion of the world, Richie Sandoval,
00:33:42helping us with the Spanish translation.
00:33:45So far, this fight has gone exactly the way Ray Leonard planned it.
00:33:48Frustrate him, frustrate him, score points.
00:33:50When you catch him off, nail him with a couple of good punches.
00:33:57He's done Ray do just what he wants to do out there.
00:34:02You know, every time Leonard faints, Duran stops.
00:34:05So he's not really the aggressor that you think he is.
00:34:08Well, again, Leonard will come over with a quick punch.
00:34:17That's Duran exactly where he wants him,
00:34:19right in the range that he wants him at at the moment.
00:34:22You wonder now if Duran wondered if he's getting old.
00:34:25Well, you know, he can get old all of a sudden in there, Marv.
00:34:28Of course he can.
00:34:29And again, he took all that weight off in a hurry.
00:34:33Nobody to blame for that but himself.
00:34:37No, the money.
00:34:39It's half-hearted punches by Roberto Duran at the moment.
00:34:43Maybe he's trying to low Ray Leonard to sleep.
00:34:45It appears that Eddie Aliano, the cut man,
00:34:47has done a good job in stopping the flow of blood
00:34:49inside the mouth of Ray Leonard,
00:34:51not apparent here in round seven.
00:34:53Well, Eddie Aliano's one of the best in the business.
00:34:55Well, Leonard gets in trouble now when he stops on that
00:34:57and stays there too long.
00:34:59You know, and he gets capped on the chin,
00:35:01and his leg speaks to wobble a little bit now.
00:35:04Good left hook by Leonard.
00:35:06Duran is throwing half-hearted punches now, Tim.
00:35:08Do you notice that?
00:35:09Maybe he don't want that.
00:35:10Yes.
00:35:11He's landing them without a lot of sting,
00:35:12and now we must question the stamina factor
00:35:15of how much strength was given up
00:35:17in getting down to the weight.
00:35:20That was a nice sucker punch in there.
00:35:22He joined him in, caught Leonard with a nice left hook.
00:35:25And then he's on the back.
00:35:28Double jab by Duran.
00:35:33Bring it up! Bring it up! Bring it up!
00:35:35Bring it up, Ray! Bring it up! Bring it up, Ray!
00:35:36Bring it up, bring it up!
00:35:37Now a little blood again from the mouth of Ray Leonard.
00:35:40Right here is where you shouldn't let Leonard
00:35:41get that rest.
00:35:43Duran throw one punch and grab,
00:35:45and Leonard out-punches him again.
00:35:49Good combination by Leonard,
00:35:51snapping the head back of Duran.
00:35:59Sneak right, fell short.
00:36:00Final seconds of round seven.
00:36:08Duran is progressively looking older, Tim.
00:36:13Back in the corner of Ray Leonard.
00:36:16Very, very good, ladies.
00:36:17Know what I want from you?
00:36:18I want you to stop standing in front of me.
00:36:20Well, you can score along with us here,
00:36:22and we'll tell you who has won the fans' poll
00:36:25at the end of the bout.
00:36:27Okay, we're fine. I just want to keep along.
00:36:29I just want to keep along.
00:36:30Move, move.
00:36:32He's around.
00:36:34All in. All in.
00:36:37All in. All in. All in.
00:36:40Get the one. Get the one.
00:36:42Get the one.
00:36:42Get the one.
00:36:42You're all right here.
00:36:43Okay.
00:36:45You're all right.
00:36:45You're doing fine.
00:36:47I want more speed.
00:36:48Get that tape out of here.
00:36:49More speed.
00:36:50More speed.
00:36:50Don't watch him.
00:36:52Everything's working for you.
00:36:53Now, he's a sucker for a left hook.
00:36:55You see it?
00:36:55Yeah.
00:36:55When you catch him stepping over his right foot,
00:36:57that's when I want that hook.
00:36:58Okay, seconds. Let's go.
00:36:59And the next time, I want more Vaseline on this man.
00:37:01Okay.
00:37:02Stay here.
00:37:02Let's go.
00:37:05Let's go.
00:37:07Let's go.
00:37:09Let's go.
00:37:10Let's go.
00:37:11Let's go.
00:37:12Let's go.
00:37:12Round number eight scheduled for 12.
00:37:15Ray Leonard remarked after the first fight in Montreal at the eyes of Roberto Duran reminded him of Charles Manson.
00:37:21A scary character of that era, now still in jail for a mass murder.
00:37:27But Roberto Duran, as Gil pointed out, showing the age as one would expect he would at age 38.
00:37:34But he summoned up quite a lot at age 37 against Barkley.
00:37:38Nice.
00:37:38Big right hand by Sugar Ray Leonard.
00:37:40But Roberto coming in and right then, that's when Duran should have jumped back in the fight.
00:37:46He's losing the fight now because he's getting tagged and he's letting Leonard build up his confidence.
00:37:51Tell you, Marv, after Ray Leonard that left, that right hand, I looked at the canvas to see if Roberto
00:37:56was going down.
00:37:56I thought he was going down.
00:37:57Didn't wobble.
00:37:58Nothing happened except he just is not, doesn't have any fire, Roberto.
00:38:03Just seem like Roberto really don't want to be in there, no.
00:38:05Which is hard to believe.
00:38:06Those eyes are not there that Ray Leonard described.
00:38:09And yet to hear Duran in preparation for this fight, it meant everything to him.
00:38:13The redemption from New Orleans.
00:38:17The infamous no-not.
00:38:19Again, Tim, the only shot Roberto Duran has in this fight is to land a good solid punch and really
00:38:25hurt Ray Leonard.
00:38:26He's got no chance to win a decision, in my opinion.
00:38:29See, Duran tries to grab with the left hand to see whether he's going to punch or not.
00:38:33By him standing there hesitating, Leonard is punching and moving.
00:38:39He should jump on Leonard. He stopped cutting the ring off.
00:38:41The thing that's keeping him from jumping on is every time Ray feints a punch, Duran stops.
00:38:46But he's not cutting the ring off on Ray at all.
00:38:48He gets him in front of a mob, but what happens again is he respects Ray's punching power.
00:38:54There's another right hand by Ray Leonard.
00:38:57He just has Roberto Duran's number tonight.
00:39:00Yeah, he's fought him before. They knew each other.
00:39:05We're in the eighth round, scheduled for 12.
00:39:07Now, why did Duran stop? Why did Duran stop punching right there?
00:39:10It seemed like he had something going.
00:39:13Well, there's a five-year difference between the two guys, 38 and 33.
00:39:17That could be one reason.
00:39:22Leonard still cannot get careless in there.
00:39:24Oh, no.
00:39:24It was a big fight.
00:39:26As I say, one punch could turn things around, but right now it's all Sugar Ray Leonard.
00:39:31Even inside, Leonard's scoring as they break.
00:39:34You know, they've been watching Duran's foot.
00:39:37How Duran, you know, he crosses over on his feet.
00:39:39And that's when they try to catch him.
00:39:41When Duran switches back to the other side, Duran is stuck on that side.
00:39:46Leonard backs into the rope and is willing to flurry there.
00:39:49Got the better of it.
00:39:50Well, Duran threw one punch and stopped.
00:39:53I think Duran is not that strong,
00:39:55and he's trying to preserve some of that energy
00:39:58for maybe if it goes in long rounds.
00:40:00Final seconds of the eight.
00:40:02The body attack from Leonard.
00:40:09Duran should not be waiting.
00:40:14It's a lot of pressure.
00:40:18Time beginning to run out, literally, on Roberto Duran as we see it.
00:40:23Leonard comfortably ahead on our scorecard.
00:40:25We've given only one to Duran with a possible draw on round five.
00:40:29Even around.
00:40:30Right hand right on the button.
00:40:32And look at Duran's legs.
00:40:33You'd expect him to wobble.
00:40:34It didn't even wobble.
00:40:35There it is again.
00:40:36Look.
00:40:37Watch out, Duran's legs are crossed.
00:40:39Yep.
00:40:40That's how he's bondable for that right hand.
00:40:44See, that's how Leonard catches him is.
00:40:45Look at his legs.
00:40:46Look at his footing.
00:40:46So, you got to bring it back.
00:40:51You know what the crowd.
00:40:52Huh?
00:40:53The hell with the crowd.
00:40:53The hell with the crowd.
00:40:54Don't let him get you moving to the point
00:40:55where you want to do something different.
00:40:57Don't worry, man.
00:40:57Let him lay yours here.
00:40:58Okay.
00:40:58Let's go.
00:41:00A long time lean, just say, okay.
00:41:02You okay, baby?
00:41:03All right.
00:41:04Let's go.
00:41:04It's okay.
00:41:05I'm okay.
00:41:05All right, baby.
00:41:11More blood from the mouth, Tim, coming out of the corner
00:41:14than at any time since early in the fight.
00:41:17That's strange.
00:41:18Ray Leonard, I think, knows, as he should,
00:41:21that he's ahead the way we see it.
00:41:24He made some comment about the hell with the crowd.
00:41:27I guess the suggestion being made
00:41:30that he should try to do more than he has,
00:41:32but he's so much in control of this fight,
00:41:34I think he's wisely saying,
00:41:36I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing.
00:41:41Now, Duran, planning there,
00:41:43lands a combination of the body.
00:41:46That was the best punches that Duran has thrown all night.
00:41:50If Duran should be concentrating more than his body,
00:41:52he's concentrating on his head.
00:41:58And there's Ray in and out, in and out, side to side.
00:42:01He knows that Duran is slow, and I'm surprised him.
00:42:04Duran has not used that quick right hand.
00:42:06Wait for a minute stab,
00:42:07and then shoot the right hand like that.
00:42:10More to the body, Duran should be going.
00:42:14Keeping that left hand up a little higher for Ray's right hand.
00:42:23But again, it's Leonard leading, landing punches and escaping.
00:42:26That's getting some boos from Duran fans.
00:42:30Yeah, but now Leonard's starting to listen to the crowd,
00:42:32where he said he wasn't going to listen to the crowd.
00:42:34He started getting flat-footed again.
00:42:45You know, Marv, you mentioned that Duran may be trying to conserve energy.
00:42:50We're into the ninth round. What is he serving it for?
00:42:53I believe he's got a lot of pressure.
00:42:54He think it works for you when you have your family here,
00:42:56like his wife and his mother here.
00:42:58But you said he's trying to conserve energy.
00:42:59It looks to me like he's conserving it for the senior prom.
00:43:02Well, the fight's not over yet.
00:43:03Well, he's so far behind, he's going to have to score a knockout.
00:43:06But I think that's maybe what he's looking for.
00:43:09But that's when you know when you look for a knockout,
00:43:11sometimes it never comes. You can't hold it all night.
00:43:13But he's not going to score it, Marv,
00:43:14unless he starts throwing some punches.
00:43:16He's got to go to the body.
00:43:17He's got to put more pressure, cut the ring off on Leonard,
00:43:21and go right to the body.
00:43:22Again, Ray is just staying out of his punching range.
00:43:25Just can't reach Ray.
00:43:26He's got to make him fight you.
00:43:28Leonard for 33, showing excellent stamina to this point.
00:43:31Stamina and speed.
00:43:33Look at that left hand.
00:43:35Look where his left hand is.
00:43:36Down around his knee.
00:43:37And every time, every time Durant knees back,
00:43:39he comes forward.
00:43:40And that's when Leonard hits him with the right hand.
00:43:43Watch Durant when he tries to get out of the way.
00:43:45See, there you go.
00:43:48Let's see.
00:43:49Because Durant is rocking.
00:43:50Well, but he does.
00:43:51Leonard puts you to sleep,
00:43:52then nails you with a few punches,
00:43:53wins the round, and that's all he has.
00:43:55There he is again.
00:43:58Now, Leonard driving Durant back into the ropes.
00:44:00Perfect fight plan for Sugar Ray Leonard.
00:44:06Durant on the ropes and Leonard in command,
00:44:08and now draws him out as the bell ends.
00:44:10Round number nine.
00:44:15A virtual shutout as we see it.
00:44:17Sugar Ray Leonard.
00:44:19Beautiful.
00:44:19Beautiful.
00:44:20Now, look what you got here.
00:44:22When you touch him in the belly, you're already down there.
00:44:25All you have to do is shoot the right hand over top on the chin.
00:44:27If you miss it, step in and spin around it.
00:44:29All right?
00:44:30Stay to the right.
00:44:31Stay to the right.
00:44:32You'll kill him with the right turns.
00:44:34He's gonna always be late.
00:44:36Keep him missing.
00:44:36What round have we got?
00:44:37Tenth round.
00:44:38Tenth round coming up, baby.
00:44:39We got nine minutes.
00:44:40That's his skin on the left.
00:44:43He's gonna last the right hand over to the left.
00:44:46Yes.
00:44:47And attack from the right hand over to the right hand over to the right hand.
00:44:49When you're against the suga,
00:44:51Robert, when you're against the suga,
00:44:53you have to take advantage of him, because it's hard.
00:44:58As we watch this replay, Richie Sandoval,
00:45:01tell us what they're saying to Durant, please.
00:45:04They're saying that actually when Leonard's against the ropes,
00:45:07he's got to put pressure on him and start banging.
00:45:10He's not doing anything. He's just staying there and stalling.
00:45:13Well, his handlers are agreeing with our view at this point.
00:45:16We have Leonard comfortably ahead,
00:45:18and there is no fire in the eyes of Roberto Durant.
00:45:21No, I think basically it's a no-mess.
00:45:23All he wants to do is go in there again and show the people
00:45:26if he lasts the distance, that he went in there again
00:45:29and he regained a little bit of something back.
00:45:31I don't agree with that, Marvin.
00:45:32I think he thought he could win this fight,
00:45:34but Leonard has discouraged him.
00:45:37And Leonard is banging him with the right hands to the ribs,
00:45:39and there's that left hook after showing him the right hand.
00:45:42Maybe there's the age factor.
00:45:44Well, whatever it is, Roberto Durant, and there it is again.
00:45:48Ray is just defying him with that right hand.
00:45:51Come on, work it out.
00:45:52Ray Leonard, who loves the challenges, loves to beat the experts.
00:45:57Those who criticize the performance,
00:46:00and rightfully so against Tommy Hearns,
00:46:01all it did was drive him to what he's doing right now.
00:46:05Excelling one more time.
00:46:07Well, I give Leonard a lot of credit for his game plan,
00:46:09but I can't understand,
00:46:11if Roberto Durant wants this so bad,
00:46:13why is it not a better fight?
00:46:16Well, as you said, he was trying to conserve energy.
00:46:18I can't figure out what he's conserving the energy for.
00:46:20Punch it out there! Punch it out!
00:46:23Come on!
00:46:25Well, Gil, like you said,
00:46:26maybe it's too late now,
00:46:27but you know, again, it only takes one punch.
00:46:29Well, that's the...
00:46:31And there's the right hand again.
00:46:33That's the punch that Leonard was teaching him to throw.
00:46:35Again, Roberto's not going to land the big punch
00:46:37unless he takes chances.
00:46:39He's going to have to take chances
00:46:40and try to reach for him.
00:46:41Take a chance of maybe getting nailed,
00:46:43but he's going to have to throw some punches.
00:46:44He doesn't have it.
00:46:45Come on, work it out!
00:46:46All that...
00:46:47That's the answer.
00:46:48Let's...
00:46:48Okay, let's be honest.
00:46:51Nice double left hook like Sugar Ray Leonard.
00:46:55We're in the 10th round, scheduled for 12.
00:46:57Sugar Ray Leonard's title at stake,
00:47:00the right hand lead by Durant Landon.
00:47:02It didn't bother Leonard.
00:47:03Yeah, but he should throw more of those.
00:47:04Just throw him, what he's got to lose.
00:47:06You know, Sugar Ray Leonard had some tough spot, Paul.
00:47:08Angles Bedrosa, one of the best young punches around.
00:47:11He's prepared for guys who can throw punches.
00:47:22You have to wonder whether or not
00:47:24Durant wants this fight.
00:47:25Durant just can't get off, Bob.
00:47:26He just can't get off.
00:47:29Can't get off.
00:47:30And the crowd is reacting.
00:47:32And Leonard, that's who Leonard wants to keep.
00:47:34You have to keep.
00:47:34You have to keep.
00:47:39Domination landed by Durant,
00:47:41but Leonard just fired back on his own.
00:47:43Score just as well.
00:47:48Now Ray's eyes wide open there.
00:47:50There's a lot of confidence showing through.
00:47:52He took a couple of shots from Durant.
00:47:54They didn't...
00:47:54They didn't seem to disturb him in any way.
00:48:02He wants to come right at him now and take him out of here.
00:48:10A couple extra shots after the bell by both fighters.
00:48:13The end of round number 10.
00:48:44Well our interpreter Richie Sandoval what are they saying to him?
00:48:48Roberto if you really want to win this fight you've got to win these last two rounds big I mean
00:48:52really big.
00:48:53You've got to let those hands go you're not doing anything.
00:48:56Well again his own corner giving him an accurate picture.
00:49:02You know Tim I know Sugar Ray Leonard pretty well.
00:49:07He's way ahead in this fight.
00:49:09He doesn't have to take a chance.
00:49:11I think he may go out and do something spectacular in these next two rounds.
00:49:15I agree with you Gil.
00:49:16I think he is a man of the moment.
00:49:19He loves the spotlight.
00:49:20He loves the stage.
00:49:21He loves to gamble and risk.
00:49:22I mean all he has to do now is faint jab and walk around the ring for two rounds and
00:49:27he's got it one.
00:49:28But I don't think he'll be satisfied with that.
00:49:30Well Durant's face don't look like he really wants to win the fight.
00:49:33No.
00:49:33He can see in the fighter's face.
00:49:34He's discouraged the mob.
00:49:42He looked like a 38 year old man just then.
00:49:44Give me another boy.
00:49:45Give me another boy.
00:49:46Give me another boy.
00:49:48Give me our boy.
00:49:48We have a proud.
00:49:53Very good concentration on Raylander's party, sticking right to that fight plan.
00:49:58And still excellent movement.
00:50:00Here we are into 11 rounds.
00:50:02After all, he's 33.
00:50:03His legs were questioned after the Hearns fight.
00:50:05And yet he has been moving constantly through 10.
00:50:13Side to side, side to side.
00:50:15Because Roberto is keeping Roberto off balance
00:50:18when he goes to the right.
00:50:26When they do get on the inside,
00:50:28it's Leonard with all of the firepower.
00:50:32And that should be where Roberto Duran wants to be.
00:50:34Well, if he can't beat him inside, Bob,
00:50:36he shows that he's not going to out-box him.
00:50:46To this point, a masterful performance
00:50:49by Sugar Ray Leonard.
00:50:52And a disappointing one from Roberto Duran.
00:50:57Well, mainly in terms of the lack of fire,
00:51:01let alone firepower.
00:51:03I thought I'd see a little more
00:51:04about Ray Leonard dismount, Tim.
00:51:06He's winning the round, but again,
00:51:09as they told him, forget the crowd.
00:51:15I'll see if you're looking for one called
00:51:16you guys if you're a fan.
00:51:16I'm not even here.
00:51:16I love you.
00:51:21I love you.
00:51:22I love you.
00:51:23I love you.
00:51:24I love you.
00:51:26I love you, man.
00:51:27I love you.
00:51:28I love you.
00:51:29I love you.
00:51:37I love you.
00:52:10But Leonard has discouraged him.
00:52:12And Leonard is banging him with the right hands to the ribs.
00:52:15And there's that left hook after showing him the right hand.
00:52:18Maybe there's the age factor.
00:52:20Or whatever it is, Roberto Duran.
00:52:22And there it is again.
00:52:24Ray is just defying him with that right hand.
00:52:28Ray Leonard, who loves the challenges, loves to beat the experts.
00:52:33Those who criticize the performance, and rightfully so against Tommy Hearns.
00:52:37All it did was drive him to what he's doing right now.
00:52:42Excelling one more time.
00:52:43Well, I give Leonard a lot of credit for his game plan.
00:52:46But I can't understand.
00:52:47If you're at the man wants to so bad, why is it not a better fight?
00:52:52Well, as you said, he was trying to conserve energy.
00:52:54I can't figure out what he's conserving the energy for.
00:52:57Punch it out there. Punch it out.
00:52:59Come on.
00:53:01Well, Gil, like you said, maybe it's too late now.
00:53:03But you know, again, it only takes one punch.
00:53:05Well, that's the...
00:53:07And there's the right hand again.
00:53:09That's the punch that Leonard Swann was teaching him to throw.
00:53:11Again, Roberto's not going to land the big punch unless he takes chances.
00:53:15He's going to have to take chances and try to reach him.
00:53:17Take a chance of maybe getting nailed.
00:53:19But he's going to have to throw some punches.
00:53:20He doesn't have it.
00:53:22Come on, work it out.
00:53:23That's the answer.
00:53:24Let's...
00:53:25Okay, let's be honest.
00:53:27Nice double left hook by Sugar Ray Leonard.
00:53:31We're in the 10th round, scheduled for 12.
00:53:33Sugar Ray Leonard's title at stake.
00:53:36The right hand lead by Duran landed.
00:53:38It didn't bother Leonard.
00:53:39Yeah, but he should throw more of those.
00:53:40Just throw them. What he's got to lose.
00:53:42You know, Sugar Ray Leonard had some tough spot on this.
00:53:44Angles Pedroza, one of the best young punches around.
00:53:47He's prepared for guys who can throw punches.
00:53:58You have to wonder whether or not who Duran wants to throw him up.
00:54:01Duran just can't get off, Bob.
00:54:02He just can't get off.
00:54:05Can't get off.
00:54:07And the crowd is reacting.
00:54:09And Leonard just gave him a little bit of what's to keep him.
00:54:15Domination landed by Duran, but Leonard just fired back on his own.
00:54:19Score just as well.
00:54:24Now Ray's eyes wide open there.
00:54:26There's a lot of confidence showing through.
00:54:28He took a couple of shots from Duran.
00:54:30They didn't seem to disturb him in any way.
00:54:34Takes chances, Ray.
00:54:35Way ahead in the fight and really reached with that right hand.
00:54:40He wants to come right at him now.
00:54:42Take him out of here.
00:54:46Couple extra shots after the bell by both fighters.
00:54:49This is the end of round number 10.
00:54:51Good one All costs.
00:54:51¡Oh, no, no!
00:54:55euch!

00:55:20Well, our interpreter, Richie Sandoval, what are they saying to him?
00:55:24Roberto, if you really want to win this fight, you've got to win these last two rounds big.
00:55:28I mean, really big.
00:55:29You've got to let those hands go.
00:55:31You're not doing anything.
00:55:32Well, again, his own corner giving him an accurate picture.
00:55:38You know, Tim, I know Sugar Ray Leonard pretty well.
00:55:43He's way ahead in this fight.
00:55:45He doesn't have to take a chance.
00:55:47I think he may go out and do something spectacular in these next two rounds.
00:55:51I agree with you, Gil.
00:55:52I think he is a man of the moment.
00:55:55He loves the spotlight.
00:55:56He loves the stage.
00:55:57He loves to gamble and risk.
00:55:59I mean, all he has to do now is faint, jab, and walk around the ring for two rounds, and
00:56:03he's got it one.
00:56:04But I don't think he'll be satisfied with that.
00:56:06Well, Durant's face don't look like he really wants to win the fight.
00:56:09No, he's going to see in the fighter's face.
00:56:11He's discouraged, Marvin.
00:56:17He looks like a 38-year-old man just then.
00:56:29Very good concentration on Ray Leonard's body, sticking right to that fight plan.
00:56:34And still excellent movement.
00:56:36Here we are into 11 rounds.
00:56:38After all, he's 33.
00:56:39His legs were questioned after the Hearns fight, and yet he has been moving constantly
00:56:44through 10.
00:56:49Side to side.
00:56:51Side to side.
00:56:52Because Roberto, he's keeping Roberto off balance when he goes to the right.
00:57:02When they do get on the inside, it's Leonard with all of the firepower.
00:57:08And that should be where the man wants to be.
00:57:10Well, if he can't beat him inside, Marvin shows that he's not going to outbox him.
00:57:14You know it.
00:57:22To this point, a masterful performance by Sugar Ray Leonard.
00:57:28And a disappointing one from Roberto Duran.
00:57:34Well, mainly in terms of the lack of fire, let alone firepower.
00:57:39I thought I'd see a little more about Ray Leonard dismount, Tim.
00:57:42He's winning the round, but again, as they told him, forget the crowd, just win the fight.
00:57:52I can't believe why Duran is not moving his head to the side.
00:57:55He's moving his straight back.
00:57:56Duran has nothing right at the moment, Mark.
00:58:00There's Ray's playing now.
00:58:03Some of the showboat from Ray who certainly can feel safe at this stage based on what's occurred so far.
00:58:10Well, the fight's not over yet, and you can't get too overconfident.
00:58:17Ooh, big right hand by Leonard.
00:58:19By Duran, and Leonard's eye is cut.
00:58:21Rocked.
00:58:22Duran, and they clashed heads again.
00:58:24That was the hardest shot that Duran threw.
00:58:26I think it was a good right hand by Duran.
00:58:28And that's what he was saving for, deserving.
00:58:30They both landed, and the most damaging one clearly was by Duran,
00:58:34just after Marvel and Hagler said the fight isn't over yet.
00:58:40And now they should perk Duran up to go after the eye.
00:58:44End of round 11.
00:58:49That's what Duran has been looking for all night.
00:58:52They threw right hand simultaneously,
00:58:55and I think you guys are right that it was the blow,
00:58:58but their heads did come close together.
00:59:01Take a look, Ray.
00:59:02But now Ray Leonard, they're telling him no problem.
00:59:05That's all right.
00:59:06What about him?
00:59:07What about him?
00:59:08I think he might have hurt his hand, Duran.
00:59:10All right, let's stay inside.
00:59:12Let's stay inside and go back inside.
00:59:14Don't need for that.
00:59:15Speed up.
00:59:17And again.
00:59:18You got it, Eddie?
00:59:19Yeah.
00:59:20Look at the left hand up now.
00:59:22Protect that eye.
00:59:23No, it's good.
00:59:23Run.
00:59:24Run to hold it.
00:59:25All right, Eddie Aliano working on the cut on the left eyelid.
00:59:28Let's see it.
00:59:29Let's take a look at this exchange of right hands.
00:59:32Leonard's right.
00:59:33Right on the eye.
00:59:34Tim, it was a right hand by Roberto Duran that opened that cut.
00:59:38And you saw a big right hand by Ray Leonard
00:59:41that buckled the legs of Duran.
00:59:43But the damage done by Duran to the left eye of Leonard final round.
00:59:48You have to worry now whether that eye, that blood,
00:59:50would fall in this last round.
00:59:51One of the best cut men in the business, Eddie Aliano,
00:59:55he's got that out of being shoved in there.
00:59:57And there's still blood coming down Ray Leonard's cheek.
01:00:00But again, he's just about safely home as far as I'm concerned.
01:00:06If anything, should encourage Duran, it should be right now.
01:00:09Right now, it should be right after him.
01:00:10You know, after he cut Leonard's eye last round,
01:00:15he never threw another punch.
01:00:16He just kept stalking him the way he's been doing all five.
01:00:19Right now, he should be cutting that ring,
01:00:21putting a little bit more pressure on him.
01:00:22No punches from Roberto Duran.
01:00:25Blood from the mouth of Ray Leonard
01:00:27and from the eye cut in round 11.
01:00:30You know, Tim, if you look at both of these guys
01:00:32when the fight's over,
01:00:33you think that Duran won the fight.
01:00:38Duran, I don't know where Duran...
01:00:51I think the blood is starting to bother Ray a little bit.
01:00:54And he might get a little careless in there
01:00:55and start to fight worrying about the eye.
01:00:59And which maybe he can't see.
01:01:01Judges are Jerry Roth from Las Vegas,
01:01:02Joe Cortez from New Jersey,
01:01:04Bob Logis from Belgium.
01:01:07And if this goes the distance,
01:01:09it'll be in their hands.
01:01:10As we see it,
01:01:11Leonard is comfortably ahead to this point.
01:01:14But suddenly, this damage
01:01:16to the face of Ray Leonard...
01:01:18Well, Tim, they're not going to stop the fight
01:01:20in the last round of a title fight.
01:01:22As far as I'm concerned, this fight's over.
01:01:24Yeah, right now, Duran...
01:01:30Right now, Duran should be right after him.
01:01:33When he just keeps...
01:01:35Duran's used the same pattern
01:01:36for the entire fight.
01:01:38No change.
01:01:39No change of strategy.
01:01:43What's Duran waiting for?
01:01:45Well, one would think he just pulled Rush in here.
01:01:47That's his only chance.
01:01:48You know that Leonard's just trying to beat that clock up.
01:01:52Tried it there, and Leonard escaped easily.
01:01:57And the crowd doesn't like it, Tim.
01:02:00Now Ray's moving around with his hands down.
01:02:04Switching for Southwater right-handed.
01:02:07And Duran is muggy.
01:02:08Duran should be punching, not muggy.
01:02:22Leonard was the heavy favorite coming into this bout.
01:02:25And both of the boxing experts picked him to win.
01:02:28Some went with Duran.
01:02:30To this point in the body, he has excelled, I think,
01:02:33even the expectations of all those who thought he should win the fight.
01:02:39And this fight's going to be over.
01:02:41Final seconds.
01:02:43That's it.
01:02:47Duran raising his hands.
01:02:49I'm not sure what for, but Ray Leonard in the arms of his handlers.
01:02:56We have Leonard comfortably ahead in the fight.
01:03:00There's no question in my mind that he won it.
01:03:02I guarantee you the judges' scoring were a lot closer than ours.
01:03:06Well, I think you're no doubt right, and we'll find out shortly.
01:03:10Let's know Ray won the fight.
01:03:12Marvin Hagler and Gil Clancy and Tim Ryan all think that Ray Leonard has won the fight.
01:03:27All right, Marvin, you know, you mentioned that the fight wasn't over
01:03:32and looked like Ray Leonard was coasting.
01:03:34All of a sudden, they both threw right hands.
01:03:37Now, if Duran's right hand would have landed maybe four inches lower,
01:03:41he may have scored a knockout.
01:03:42Well, that's what it was.
01:03:43I thought the same thing.
01:03:44Let's take a look at him.
01:03:46There's the punch stats.
01:03:47Total punches.
01:03:48Leonard landed 222, 227, and 52% Duran, only 14% of his punches.
01:03:54Oh, beautiful.
01:03:55Well, either he was way off, or this is the end of the trail for him.
01:03:58But you know, why I got the opportunity?
01:04:00I'd like to say happy birthday to my son, Gentry.
01:04:03He's 19 years old tonight.
01:04:04But you don't have time to sing to him.
01:04:06You have to get back to this fight.
01:04:09Great fight.
01:04:10Well, I wouldn't say it was a great fight.
01:04:13I think it was a great tactical performance by Sugar Ray Leonard.
01:04:16He completely frustrated Duran,
01:04:18kept him exactly where he wanted him for the entire fight.
01:04:22Just really was never in danger.
01:04:25All right, now let's go up to ring announcer Michael Buffer for the decision.
01:04:29Ladies and gentlemen, here's the official scoring.
01:04:31Jerry Roth scores the bout, 119 to 109.
01:04:37Joe Cortez scores it, 116 to 111.
01:04:41And Bob Logis scores the bout, 120 to 110 for the winner,
01:04:46by unanimous decision.
01:04:48And still, WBC super middleweight champion of the world, Sugar Ray Leonard.
01:05:03All right, here in the ring,
01:05:05get Ray Leonard over to us here.
01:05:08Richard Steele holding his arm.
01:05:13Ray approaching, uh, Roberto Duran.
01:05:18Congratulating him on his effort.
01:05:20And here is, uh, Ray Leonard.
01:05:22Somewhat the worst for wear because of a couple of cuts.
01:05:25But I think, Ray, in the fights that you consider your great efforts,
01:05:30this is one of your most masterful performances.
01:05:32I would say so, Tim.
01:05:33I think, uh, a lot of interest is placed on the fact Duran was 38 years old.
01:05:37But Duran's a veteran, and he came to fight.
01:05:40Well, it appeared to us that you frustrated him early,
01:05:43not so much in the same way as in New Orleans,
01:05:47but that you showed him that there was no way he could effectively match up against you.
01:05:51Well, listen, I didn't really listen to the crowd, you know.
01:05:53I think the fact that we're being cut for the first time,
01:05:55my lip, I had to move, and then there was a headbutt to the eye,
01:05:59and then there was another shot that, uh, it was imperative that I move.
01:06:04Well, you moved well through the whole match.
01:06:07Tell us about the difference in your training,
01:06:08because clearly anybody who worried about the legs not being there after the Hearns fight
01:06:13were certainly persuaded that they still are.
01:06:16The legs were good, Tim.
01:06:17In fact, that's what saved me a lot of time.
01:06:19It got me in, got me out, and it confused Duran.
01:06:22Did you stick exactly to the game plan you wanted?
01:06:24The game plan was actually, actually the same thing.
01:06:28What about Duran?
01:06:29Were you surprised that there was kind of a lack of fire,
01:06:31or did the fact that you, uh, you dominated the way you did simply take it away from him?
01:06:36Well, I knew he was going to be, uh, tough, but, uh, speed was the, uh, the key test.
01:06:41Speed.
01:06:41Let me go to the hospital to check that.
01:06:43All right.
01:06:43Ray Leonard, congratulations to you.
01:06:45Two rather vicious cuts suffered.
01:06:48One from a headbutt accidental,
01:06:51the other from a big right hand from Roberto Duran.
01:06:53There wasn't much else big from Roberto Duran in this fight.
01:06:57A disappointing performance for him.
01:06:59An effective, indeed, masterful one for Sugar Ray Leonard.
01:07:02And again, uh, we have the feeling he'll be back for some more against somebody.
01:07:07And now let's go to Al Bernstein.
01:07:12Well, uh, interesting bout, to say the least.
01:07:15Not an exciting one, but one in which Ray Leonard again established in everyone's mind that he is a winner.
01:07:20And Roberto Duran just could never get things going.
01:07:23Key rounds, the third round in which I think Leonard really started to take control.
01:07:27The sixth round where he hurt him badly.
01:07:29And, of course, uh, the cut later on, which never did help, uh, Roberto Duran at all.
01:07:33You mentioned at the top of the show that you had a strange feeling.
01:07:36You said, well, maybe someone would get cut.
01:07:37Sugar Ray got cut.
01:07:38But the real strange thing to me is the lack of, oh, aggressiveness of Roberto throughout the entire fight.
01:07:45Well, you know, uh, somebody said this to me prior to, uh, the fight.
01:07:48They said there are lots of ways to quit.
01:07:50I'm not suggesting Duran quit again.
01:07:51But what I'm suggesting is at a certain point, which, uh, Gil and Marvin alluded to, he decided, I can't
01:07:57win this fight.
01:07:58And he was there to survive.
01:07:59I think Marvin said it.
01:08:00And at least redeem himself that he went the distance.
01:08:02But it turned out to be, uh, not a winning effort by him.
01:08:05Not even close.
01:08:06And all he did for the last part of the fight, it seemed, was to just go through the motions.
01:08:10Uh, that's pretty much what it was.
01:08:11And let's give Leonard credit.
01:08:12He did have the movement.
01:08:13Let me ask you something else.
01:08:15Was, you know, and, uh, I think Tim brought it up, a great technical fight or a great fight itself?
01:08:19A great technical fight on Leonard's part, not a great fight, period.
01:08:22Okay.
01:08:23A little earlier this evening, we gave you some numbers to call.
01:08:25And we're talking about, uh, so you could, uh, call in your votes, you fans at home.
01:08:30And look at this.
01:08:31A shutout.
01:08:33Absolutely shutout.
01:08:33And I only gave Leonard, I only gave Duran, I think, one round.
01:08:36So I'm certainly in agreement with our fans.
01:08:39Uh, it was a superb performance by Leonard or a bad one by Duran.
01:08:43Either way you want to look at it.
01:08:44Okay, for some final comments, let's go back downstairs to ringside.
01:08:47Once again, here's Tim Ryan.
01:08:48Tim?
01:08:50Thanks, Jim.
01:08:50Well, uh, gentlemen, uh, a great performance.
01:08:53We all agree by, uh, Ray Leonard.
01:08:54Uh, is the, is the impression that, uh, that should be enough for Roberto Duran, Gil?
01:08:59Well, you know, he, he just showed nothing.
01:09:01He had no firepower.
01:09:02They were talking all about his motivation.
01:09:04He was motivated.
01:09:05He waited nine and a half years.
01:09:07I never saw a guy that looked less motivated than Roberto Duran was in the fight.
01:09:11Marvin Hagler, you're not a big Sugar Ray Leonard fan.
01:09:14The world knows that.
01:09:15What are your thoughts about his work tonight?
01:09:16Well, you know, I have to give him credit because basically I'm a, I'm a fighter and you,
01:09:19you give do where do is, is, is supposed to be.
01:09:22Uh, I thought Ray's strategy was very good.
01:09:24I believe that I think that, uh, Roberto Duran should think about retirement.
01:09:28Because the younger fighters that are coming up today, shots that he took today, they will
01:09:31put his lights out.
01:09:32Did Leonard show enough to have him keep going?
01:09:35Uh, I feel as though that if he won that fight, that he would fight again.
