02:18Boxing After Dark is back.
02:20Tonight from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
02:23A doubleheader.
02:24First up, a featherweight matchup between rising star Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico
02:29and Australian Olympian Robbie Peton.
02:31And then hometown favorite and lightweight title belt holder Paul Matapora
02:36goes up against Angel Manfredi, coming off a big win over Julio Diaz last October.
02:42We're at the A.J. Palumbo Center on the campus of Duquesne University,
02:46home of the Atlantic 10s, Duke's.
02:48Tonight's packed house is here to cheer hometown hero Paul Matapora
02:53as he looks for a possible unification down the road
02:56with one of the sports best fighters, Floyd Mayweather.
02:58We are expecting tonight's performers to add to the stories
03:02which are already written on their backs and shoulders here on Boxing After Dark.
03:09Hello again, everybody. I'm Jim Lampley.
03:11We welcome you to this step-up edition of Boxing After Dark.
03:14Fighters in both of the fights you're seeing tonight
03:17looking to move forward toward significant title shots
03:20and potential supremacy down the road in their divisions.
03:23First up, the featherweight fight.
03:24We'll show you the fighters in just a minute.
03:27Later on, the main event in which hometown hero Paul Spatapora
03:31tries to show at this relatively advanced stage of his career
03:34that he is indeed a legitimate championship quality fighter
03:37even though he's held a title belt for a couple of years.
03:41Spatapora in Angel Manfredi faces tonight his first real blue ribbon opponent.
03:47Manfredi, the kind of fighter who determines in the 135-pound weight class
03:51and in the past in the 130-pound weight class
03:53whether you're really capable of fighting at the very top level
03:57and that's what we're going to learn about Spatapora
03:59before his adoring crowd here later tonight.
04:02First up, this featherweight title shot eliminator, Marquez against Peden
04:08and right now let's look at the tale of the tape
04:10for the two fighters who are going to be in the ring.
04:13They are both 28 years old, both 5 feet 7 inches tall,
04:16a reach advantage for the Australian fighter
04:19who hopes to pot shot Marquez from the outside.
04:22Yesterday, weigh-in number one under state of Pennsylvania rules.
04:26They weighed in under the 126-pound limit.
04:28Neither fighter could gain more than 10 pounds prior to this morning's second weigh-in
04:33and as you can see, they were both within the 10-pound limitation there.
04:36So the fight is legal as they enter the ring.
04:39Let's go to the rules of the bout where the unofficial ringside scorer, Harold...
04:42For the four points that the judges will use to score each individual round,
04:46clean punching, effective aggressiveness, ring generalship,
04:50and defense with a strong emphasis on clean, effective punching.
04:55Jim!
04:55Thank you, Harold.
04:56We'll be hearing in a moment from HBO Boxing Analyst Larry Merchant
05:00and during the fight, of course, from Boxing After Dark expert commentator Emmanuel Stewart.
05:05As you watch tonight's telecast, log on to HBO.com slash boxing
05:08where you'll find our brand-new feature, HBO's Inside Corner,
05:11a daily editorial offering a wide variety of columns, opinions, points of view, and boxing news.
05:16And don't forget to check out the current installment of our Where Are They Now? series
05:20featuring former welterweight champion Marlon Starling.
05:23A closer look now at the two fighters in the ring with Larry Merchant, beginning with Juan Manuel Marquez.
05:30Marquez admitted to us that he was as surprised by his brother Rafael's knockout victory over Mark Johnson a couple
05:38of weeks ago,
05:39as many others were, as many others were, Marquez is now a challenger for a title just as well as
05:46his older brother.
05:49A few years ago, he had an opportunity to fight Prince Hamed before Barrera did, but he passed it up.
05:57He said he had a bad hand.
06:00Some people thought it wasn't that bad.
06:03Perhaps he is cautious because in his other life, he's an accountant.
06:07For eight years, he's worked as an accountant in Mexico City.
06:11Across the ring, Robbie Peden of Australia.
06:13A closer look at him with Larry Merchant.
06:16Robbie Peden is regarded as Australia's most outstanding amateur fighter.
06:22Appeared in two Olympics, 92 and 96.
06:26But he has never fought there as a pro.
06:29All of it, he's become a United States pro.
06:33Headquartered at Big Bear in California.
06:37He did go back home to Australia three years ago, and while he was sleeping in his parents' home,
06:43was attacked by a thug, suffered 65 stitches in his scalp, a broken kneecap, other damage.
06:55Four months later, he was in the ring.
06:57Let's go after ring announcer Michael Buffer for the official introduction.
07:02Ladies and gentlemen, good evening, and welcome to the A.J. Palumbo Center
07:06here at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
07:12Where tonight, Michael Acri Boxing Promotions is proud to present

07:37and on the line will be the NABF and vacant USBA titles,
07:42and the winner will become the mandatory IBF World Championship Challenger.
07:49The three judges at ringside scoring this contest are
07:52Dana DiPaolo, Paul Silverman, and Peter Tremotera.
07:57And when the bell rings, your referee in charge of the action, Rick Steigerwald.
08:02And now, from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, let's get this party started.
08:08Twelve rounds of boxing.
08:10This is in the featherweight division.
08:16Introducing first, fighting out of the blue corner,
08:19wearing black trim with red and white,
08:21and weighing in at 125 and one-half pounds.
08:25His professional record, 20 victories in 21 bouts,
08:29including 10 knockouts with only one defeat.
08:32Training and fighting out of Big Bear, California,
08:34by way of hometown Brisbane, Australia,
08:38here is the reigning and defending NABF champion,
08:42Robbie the Bomber, Peden.
08:50And his opponent across the ring, fighting out of the red corner,
08:54wearing black with gold letters,
08:56he weighs 125 pounds.
08:58In 39 professional bouts,
09:01he has 37 victories, including 29 knockouts,
09:04and only two losses.
09:06Ladies and gentlemen,
09:08Thomas y Caballeros de Ciudad de México,
09:11Juan Manuel Marquez.
09:27You're both professional, I expect you to act like you.
09:29I went over the rules in the dressing room with the guys before the fight,
09:33and you're corner men too.
09:34I'm going to give you three commands.
09:36Stop breaking box.
09:37When I say stop, I want you to stop.
09:39Step back or your hands up,
09:40protect yourself at all times.
09:42When a fighter goes down,
09:43you will go to the neutral corner,
09:44and you will come out when I tell you to come out.
09:47Shake hands, this is me, and God bless you both.
09:49Back to your corner.
09:51The best punch Robbie Payton ever delivered,
09:54as far as the sport is concerned,
09:57was the one in a sparring session with Barrera
10:01some weeks ago that damaged the rib
10:04and cost a postponement of his showdown rematch
10:09with Morales.
10:10We'll see what he has in a live fight.
10:13Logically enough, Payton says,
10:15if I can hold my own with Barrera in a sparring session,
10:18why shouldn't I be okay against Marquez?
10:21After all, Barrera's the best fighter in the division.
10:24Marquez is a guy who was once thought of...
10:30held in the horrible fight against Norwood.
10:34Many at ringside felt as though the decision should have gone the other way,
10:38but Marquez's career has been more or less mired in neutral since that time.
10:43This is another chance for him to step forward into the spotlight,
10:45and Emanuel Stewart, he starts out working well with the left hand.
10:49He's coming out looking very good,
10:50and the fact that every time you get a report about anything happened to seem like from Big Bear,
10:56Robbie Payton is involved,
10:58so he just about lives there, I guess, all of the time.
11:00And where most fighters train up there, he lives as his permanent home,
11:04so he should be in good shape.
11:06Well, as a matter of fact,
11:08Fernando Vargas lets him use his home when he's not in training,
11:11perhaps when he's training as well,
11:13and he's been very generous, I've heard, to Pete.
11:16And Pete has been very generous with his comments, too,
11:19related to Fernando Vargas.
11:20They have a great friendship.
11:22Vargas is a guy who elicits great loyalty from his friends,
11:26as many of them have proven in the past.
11:32The match up here you have, in Pete,
11:34you have a what's called crafty fighter,
11:36very smart, very crafty, tricky.
11:38And in Marquez, you have a very basic, fundamental, solid fighter
11:42that has extremely good punching power.
11:44He has good power through on all of his deliveries.
11:47Nothing fancy, but very basic.
11:49Classic form, Juan Manuel Marquez.
11:52When Norwood roughed him up, grabbed him, held him,
11:55fought him inside,
11:57Marquez had difficulty getting on track
11:59against the awkward and roughhouse style of Norwood.
12:03If you stand outside and fight Marquez,
12:06you give him a chance to do what he does best.
12:08He's a tremendous puncher.
12:11Very difficult to anyone to fight Norwood.
12:13But he's left-handed, he gets down in very bad positions,
12:16which make it very difficult to land a clean punch.
12:19Good uppercut by Marquez.
12:21Momentarily stops the assault by Peden.
12:41126-pound weight class loaded with talent.
12:45Barrera, Barrera, and Morales, as we've had.
12:47There's a big right hand by Juan Manuel Marquez.
12:52Step back, right, team.
12:54Watch him push him down on the head.
12:55Watch the low blows block.
12:56Prince Nassim Hamed preparing to come back to action
13:00next month here on HBO.
13:04He becomes an economic force again
13:06as soon as he's active in the division.
13:19As we go to Juan Manuel Marquez's corner
13:21where they speak Spanish,
13:23our interpreter is Hector Garcia.
13:27You have to work a little harder.
13:28You have to use the jab a little more.
13:31You're going to eliminate this problem a lot faster.
13:33He's not very agile to stand in front of your jab.
13:40Just go for it.
13:44Marquez is a very good punch.
13:46And one of the...
13:54Marquez is a very good punch with both hands.
13:57Has tremendous follow-through.
13:58One of the things that concerns me a lot
14:00is the fact that Peten often holds his left hand down low.
14:04And that's one of the things that I'm very concerned about
14:06as the fight progresses.
14:08That he doesn't get hit too many of those right hands from Marquez.
14:11Round one, CompuBox numbers.
14:13Marquez 17 out of 43, including 9 of 22 jabs.
14:16Peten 5 of 36, 2 of 22 jabs.
14:19Those numbers would seem to indicate
14:21that if Peten wants to continue to fight from outside,
14:23he may have a problem.
14:24Marquez has better range.
14:29I personally was surprised
14:31given the profiles of the two fighters
14:33when Robby Peten said that he thought he could fight Marquez
14:36from the outside.
14:37It seems to me that if Robby Peten wants to beat Juan Manuel Marquez,
14:41he's got to get inside
14:42and work the ribcage somewhat the way Norwood did.
14:45He's going to have to do that
14:46because sitting outside,
14:47even though Marquez is not that fancy,
14:48he's so basically sound and fundamental
14:50that it's very difficult for you to catch him with clean punches.
14:54And I'd like to point out
14:55that the trainer, Nacho Berenstein,
14:57has did a great job, I think,
14:59in training both of the Marquez brothers there.
15:02Unlike in the past,
15:03many of the Mexican fighters
15:05that's very aggressive,
15:06but recently we're seeing
15:07a whole new generation of Mexican fighters
15:10who are very technically,
15:11in fact, they do a lot of counter-punching.
15:13When you look at Borrero,
15:14you look at the two Marquez,
15:15they're fighting very intelligent now,
15:17much, much different,
15:19and actually out-boxing
15:20most of the American fighters.
15:21So the stereotype of the Mexican fighter
15:24is gradually going away,
15:25and of course,
15:26Beristain trained the great Daniel Zaragoza
15:28for a long time.
15:29Zaragoza was himself
15:31completely the opposite
15:32of the classic Mexican fighter.
15:33He was a guy who boxed you
15:35and won with finesse.
15:36I think a lot of this
15:37is due to the fact
15:38that the Mexican fighters
15:39are living in so much
15:40in a mingling
15:40with the American fighters nowadays
15:42and training here in America
15:44and have picked up
15:45on a lot of our techniques,
15:46but still have maintained
15:47that great punching power.
15:49because, you know,
15:50in a respect, interesting,
15:51you're not sitting
15:52through too many
15:53of the Mexican left hooks
15:53to the body
15:54as compared to...
15:55No, that's interesting.
15:56No, it's not a basic staple
15:58of Juan Manuel Marquez's attack.
16:01It isn't even really
16:02a part of what Eric Morales does.
16:04The left hook to the body
16:05is still something you see
16:06from Marco Antonio Barrera,
16:08although even he has now shown
16:09he can win without that weapon.
16:11Yes, he's become
16:12a down-and-side fighter,
16:13and their pick-in punches
16:14are very beautiful
16:15with their gloves up high.
16:19They continue to trade
16:21from outside.
16:21Peden had a moment
16:23with a counterpunch
16:23earlier in the round,
16:24but by and large,
16:26from this distance,
16:27Marquez seems likely
16:28to land more.
16:30I see Peden has changed
16:31his strategy now.
16:32He's decided that
16:33fighting from outside
16:33is not working.
16:34He's trying to move in
16:35and be more aggressive now.
16:39So let's see if Peden
16:40can find a way
16:40to get a half a foot closer
16:43and try to get
16:44into a position
16:45where he can begin
16:46to make his punches
16:46mean something.
16:58This is interesting.
16:59I consider Peden
17:01to be the crafty fighter,
17:02but at this stage right here
17:03in every department,
17:04Marquez is taking advantage
17:05of the speed that he has
17:07and the punch and power.
17:14Mark your calendars
17:16for these upcoming fights.
17:17March 23,
17:18Prince Nassim Hamed
17:19returns to the ring
17:20facing Manuel Calvo.
17:21Also that night,
17:22Johnny Tapia
17:23takes on Angel Vasquez.
17:24April 20,
17:25undefeated Floyd Mayweather
17:27steps up in weight
17:28to challenge
17:28lightweight champion
17:29Jose Luis Castillo.
17:31A brave step for Mayweather.
17:33If it's triumphant,
17:34it's huge.
17:35A week later,
17:36rising heavyweight
17:37Camille McClein
17:38battles Shannon Briggs.
17:40McClein trying to move
17:41closer to the inner circle
17:42of heavyweights.
17:43He already may be
17:44in the top six.
17:45And on May 4,
17:46the long-awaited grudge match
17:48between Oscar De La Hoya
17:49and Fernando Vargas
17:50in a 154-pound
17:52tight unification fight
17:53only on HBO pay-per-view.
17:55HBO,
17:56the heart and soul
17:57of boxing.
18:00Once again,
18:01you'll see Marquez
18:02landing those right hands
18:03over the...
18:04Check his arm!
18:05Check his arm!
18:12Stop!
18:14Stop!
18:16Stop!
18:17Here we go!
18:55First 40 seconds of round 3, Robbie Peden continues to show that he wants to get a little closer to
19:01Juan Manuel Marquez.
19:05And Marquez treating Peden with caution and respect but still landing from the outside with the jab and the occasional
19:14right hand.
19:14There's a right hand over the top by Marquez.
19:18Peden has been able to absorb the right hands by Marquez but I don't know what's going to happen going
19:23down the stretch
19:23because Marquez has tremendous follow through on his right hand and he's landing him at will with the low left
19:29hand of Peden.
19:30And sooner or later something is going to have to happen even if it's no more just a cut or
19:34injury.
19:34Now this is exactly what you spoke to Robbie Peden about during the meeting yesterday, Emmanuel,
19:39when you said to him, you know, you hold your hands low and you're going against a big puncher.
19:43And he said, yeah, I know, but I have to hold my hands higher.
19:46Yeah, and then he said, if I do hold it low, I'll make sure I'm on the other side of
19:49the ring.
19:50That was okay during the fighters' meeting, but now in the heat of the battle, he's coming in and still
19:54is getting hit with those right hands.
19:55Well, it's one of the oldest stories in boxing. If you have a habit and it's a long-standing habit,
20:00you may say you'll change for a given fight, but odds are once you're in the ring, you'll do what
20:05you've always done.
20:06And once there's the fighters' progress in there, obviously, Peden has become a little bit more lax,
20:11a little wider with his punches, and Marquez has maintained the same level of balance and position.
20:19Marquez remembering to go to the body.
20:37Robby Peden had it right. He said, Marquez is an excellent fighter. I expect him to be able to lead
20:42or follow.
20:44And indeed, Marquez can counter when Peden tries to get off, or he can set up his own attack, as
20:50he shows you there.
20:51Peden has had, probably is what I gather, maybe over 100, maybe close to 200 pounds of fights.
20:56And as a result, those habits that he's developed, it's going to be very hard to get out of.
21:01And normally, it would not be that much of a problem, but with a puncher like Marquez, who's also a
21:05sharp fighter, it's just a big mistake.
21:09Robby Peden so far has shown that he has the chin to take good stuff for Juan Manuel Marquez.
21:16The bad news is that Marquez is landing good stuff.
21:19What's up with a blackmail?
21:22Put your hands on the phone.
21:24They're too small.
21:28They're too small.
21:30And there's a lot of people here.
21:35I'll give you my silver purse.
21:36Let me take your eyes, please.
21:37Give me the eyes, please.
21:38Put your eyes on the plate.
21:41This is a 90 minutes.
21:43I'll give you a picture.
21:45Come on, Please.
21:46Are you hurt?
21:47Are you sure?
21:48Just a little bit.
21:51You threw in real nice. It's very easy to dominate with the jab.
22:00Stay down low. Come up.
22:08Good job, baby.
22:14Stop. Hold it tight. Hold it tight. Stay there. Wipe this off his head. Wipe this off his head.
22:22That's no good. Put your head down.
22:26Good job. Time in. Fucked.
22:30Round four begins in Pittsburgh.
22:33Proud here watching this fight as they get ready to cheer for Paul Spadafora in the main event coming next.
22:38Harold Letterman, how do you have Marquez and Pieden through the first three?
22:41Okay, Jim. 3-0, 30-27, Juan Manuel Marquez.
22:46Jim, Robbie Pieden seems to be just giving Juan Manuel Marquez the opportunities to score, and he's taking every advantage.
22:52Beautiful left jabs, hard straight right hands.
22:55Robbie Pieden keeps those hands too low, as you've been saying.
22:58Faints a lot. Doesn't punch enough.
23:00Marquez just taking advantage of the opportunities presented to him.
23:05Emmanuel, what can Pieden do to change the fight?
23:08I think Pieden has to be busy, and he has to jab more, but he should jab with his jab,
23:12jab in a pie.
23:13That way he can defect a lot of the right hands that may be coming over.
23:16He's jabbing at Marquez's left eye.
23:20The thing is, he doesn't utilize his jab too much.
23:28The other things he can't change.
23:29He fights with his hands too far apart to be fighting a fighter as sharp as Marquez is, but that's
23:34not going to change.
23:39You see how low Robbie Pieden holds his hands as he sets up.
23:50Working the corner of Pieden, I noticed that Jim Strickland, one of the best cut men in the business and
23:55also the busiest.
23:56He's been working cuts, I think, for the last eight weeks.
23:59Every fight I've been to, he's working the corners of.
24:01He's very much in demand.
24:04And also, Jeff Lacey, one of our top fighters coming up in the Super Millweight division, is also working as
24:10a cornerman for Robbie Pieden.
24:14Jeff Lacey is another pupil of Roger Bloodworth, who works with Fernando Vargas, works with Lacey, works with Robbie Pieden.
24:24Keep the blows up, that's the second time, that's a warning.
24:27Keep the blows up, you understand?
24:28You understand?
24:30That was a warning on him.
24:31Stand back, fuck.
24:34Probably Bloodworth's prize pupil has been Vargas.
24:40Roger, I think it went with Pernell Whitaker.
24:42Yep.
24:44Hard right hand by Marquez.
24:47Most solid blow of the fight so far.
24:51Just when I was going to say that Pieden is having one of his better rounds, the right-hand lands
24:56again.
24:59That's a pushing guy.
25:03Pieden made an interesting remark to us, which is that he didn't think that Marquez is a confident fighter.
25:10And that if you get on top of him, he'll back off.
25:15He won't be as aggressive.
25:18But so far he just hasn't done enough to bring out that lack of confidence, if it exists.
25:24If anything, he's made him a more confident fighter.
25:27But now, Marquez has a bloody nose.
25:37You've got to use that uppercut.
25:40You've got to use that uppercut.
25:45Breathe in through your mouth.
25:49Keep using that uppercut.
25:53He's almost gone.
25:56You're winning this fight.
25:58By a very little margin.
25:59But you're winning this fight.
26:04Emmanuel, let's take a look at a package of right-hands by Marquez.
26:08Yes, the right hand has been the signal to punch throughout this entire fight.
26:11More so than any other one particular punch.
26:13Mainly because of the low left hand of Robbie Pieden.
26:18So Marquez landing there, a lead right hand.
26:22Landing the right hand behind the jab.
26:25Landing the right hand, countering Pieden's left.
26:28Every variety, right?
26:30Every variety.
26:30Even when Pieden is jabbing, he jabs with his elbows bending slightly out
26:34to the degree that you can land the right hand at the same time that he's going to deliver this
26:38jab.
26:41That's part of the importance of keeping the elbow straight when you jab, huh?
26:44That's very true.
26:44Put the maximum distance between yourself and the opponent while you land the punt.
26:49Jabs through round four, incidentally.
26:52Marquez 35 out of 95 by CompuVox estimate.
26:55Pieden only 12 out of 83.
26:57Pieden averaging only 38 punches per round.
26:59So Marquez has been able to limit Pieden's activity somewhat
27:03by landing all those right hands that you saw in the replay package.
27:07And there's another right hand over the top by Juan Manuel Marquez.
27:11Yes.
27:12You know, coming into the fight primarily everyone was expecting Marquez
27:15and respected him primarily for his big punching power.
27:18But he's shown a great display of boxing talents today, which has impressed me also.
27:23I don't recall him being willing to back up, move forward, change up.
27:30He's become a more complete fighter over the last couple of years.
27:35Well, he has a good spare part on the top than his younger brother.
27:42We asked him if he felt any friendly competition with his brother that now that his brother has suddenly emerged
27:49as a serious fighter in his division, does he feel any pressure to perform?
27:56He's been a bit better.
27:57He doesn't feel that he's the big brother.
28:02He doesn't feel that as the big brother he has to be the big brother.
28:06That was a good example of good balance right there.
28:09He threw a loop in right hand, missed it and was still in position where he could come back with
28:13a left hook at the same time.
28:27You can see Marquez beckoning people to come forward.
28:35I was listening in the corner to Nacho Berestine advising Marquez to shoot more uppercuts.
28:41But when you shoot an uppercut as a lead punch running in like that, you leave in yourself wide open
28:46to get caught with a counter punch at the same time.
28:48And it's very dangerous.
28:49I was surprised for him to tell him to shoot that.
28:51Just ask Buster Douglas, who tried an uppercut against Evander Holyfield and found himself flat on his back giving away
28:56the heavyweight championship.
28:58That's right.
28:58Straight right hand will always be the uppercut when you shoot as a lead punch.
29:02There's a left hook for Marquez.
29:05Momentarily snapping Steven's head back and now combination punches from Marquez and Peten flurries with a counter barrage of his
29:13own.
29:15Right hand landing flush again for Marquez.
29:21Well, one thing's for sure, Peten can take a punch.
29:25Particular right hand punch.
29:28Partially because he is a proud Mexican.
29:30Juan Manuel Marquez says if he wins this fight, he doesn't necessarily want to accept the title shot against IVF
29:36title holder Manuel Medina, which is the prize at stake here.
29:39He'd rather fight for the WBC crown, which at the moment belongs to Eric Morales.
29:44Let's take a look at the top fighters in the division, Larry, as Morales and Barrera get ready to square
29:49off against each other again.
29:51Barrera and Morales still regarded as one-two.
29:55Ahmed making his comeback in a couple of weeks.
29:58Smoke Gaynor has a title but hasn't fought in more than a year.
30:02There's Marquez and Pauli Ayala, who is being groomed to fight Barrera or Morales, whoever wins their showdown in June.
30:14And if Robbie Peten can upset Juan Manuel Marquez, he would move into the list, but right now Peten's getting
30:20busted up.
30:22Once again, right hand coming right at the same time that Peten was shooting a jab with his elbows bent
30:27and shooting it from too low.
30:30By CompuVox estimate, Peten only threw 34 punches in round five.
30:34If he's not going to throw 50 or 60 punches around, he just isn't going to create enough offense to
30:41deflect Juan Manuel Marquez and knock him off course.
30:44Barring a knockout is going to be very difficult for Peten to win this fight because the momentum and the
30:48rhythm is favored Marquez.
30:50The only thing at this stage that Peten can do since he's being beaten anyway is to be busier.
30:56He should pick up his volume of punches because he seemingly has a lot of energy still.
31:01He doesn't seem to be in turn, but his volume of punches is too low.
31:05And his face is beginning to swell.
31:07He doesn't yet have visual problems, but there's a beginning of swelling around his eyes and the rest of his
31:14face from getting tattooed with all those punches Marquez lands.
31:17There's a slip as Marquez goes down, but maybe a little bit of a confidence builder for Peten.
31:22Yeah, I think it was. Even though it was a slip, I think it's just to see an opponent go
31:26down gives a little energy to him.
31:28He was just dead and over.
31:31Watch your heads.
31:33The uppercut almost landed big for Marquez.
31:36The explains.
31:37...
31:38...
31:46...
31:47...
31:50...
32:05Yeah, he busted him across the top with that.
32:08Beaton's got a good beard.
32:09Yeah, Beaton doesn't have really a defense for a right hand.
32:12Some guys roll his shoulders with his shoulder right hand.
32:15Some guys slip over to the left.
32:16He just pretty much just takes them.
32:18And even if you can take those punches and you don't get knocked out,
32:22sooner or later when human flesh is being hit on contiguously,
32:25something is going to have to give.
32:28Which means you're going to end up with an injury or a bad shoulder to see eventually.
32:33Beaton came back off that big right hand with a left hook
32:35that was one of his more effective punches of the fight.
32:43No sign yet, as Larry pointed out,
32:45that Beaton has robbed Marquez of any confidence.
32:49Marquez seems to feel that he can do what he wants to do.
32:53Well, at that time, at least, Beaton had his hand up.
32:55Yes, that's one of the few times that he blocked it right in.
32:58It's easier to count the ones that he blocks than it is the one that gets hit with.
33:16Step back, right knee, all the way back, step back.
33:18Step back, box.
33:21Tank sackies.
33:22Tank sackies.
33:31In the world of boxing competition, both fights are significant.
33:36But here at Pittsburgh, crowd noise will tell you the main event
33:40takes place when Paul Spadafora enters the ring.
33:43Spadafora, by now the most famous of Pittsburgh fighters
33:47since light heavyweight legend Billy Kahn 50 years ago.
33:51Tonight, Spadafora stepping up in class
33:54to defend against Angel Manfredi,
33:56who's been in with a lot of the best.
33:58You let that left hand down, you got caught with one right hand in that round.
34:02Get that left hand up.
34:04It's not that big a punch.
34:06You got to keep throwing those left hooks.
34:08Keep throwing those left hook overcuts.
34:12Speed, speed.
34:14It doesn't matter if you don't hit hard,
34:15but just keep that speed, it's going to do it.
34:17Jab, jab, and keep the head down.
34:20How do you feel?
34:21Do you feel okay yet?
34:31The fight is scheduled for 12 rounds
34:33because it is a title eliminator.
34:36The winner in line for a shot at IVF 135-pound belt holder, Manuel Medina.
34:44Harold Lutterman, how do you have it through six?
34:46Okay, Chip, I got it five rounds to one, 59-55,
34:49one Manuel Marquez,
34:51is based on, you know, that clean effect of punching.
34:54He's just out punching him, hitting him with the right hand.
34:56But, Jim, I got to tell you,
34:57in round four, the round that I did give to Peden,
35:00he bloodied Marquez's nose,
35:01and I really believe from the bottom of my heart
35:04that Marquez is swallowing blood
35:05because a lot of times if you watch him,
35:07his mouth will be wide open,
35:08he's breathing through his mouth
35:10because when he's breathing through his nose,
35:12he swallows blood from his nose.
35:14So this may hurt him later in a fight.
35:15It may slow him up.
35:16I don't know.
35:17So far, Marquez with a big lead.
35:19What about a fighter swallowing blood?
35:21Oh, it definitely makes you weaker
35:23as the fight goes on
35:24and sometimes become very nauseating.
35:29Meldrick Taylor against Julio Cesar Chavez,
35:31March 17, 1990.
35:33Yeah, he was bleeding.
35:35Meldrick swallowed so much of his own blood,
35:37he was sick.
35:37Oh, my God, his body was bleeding,
35:38his kidneys, everything.
35:40Right hand over the top by Peden.
35:42Peden, I should say.
35:48Juan Manuel Marquez trying to break Robbie Peden down
35:51from the outside
35:52and continue what has become a string of six consecutive knockouts coming in.
35:58Yeah, that's funny.
35:59Tonight, he's fighting a fight with a lot of technical skills
36:02instead of punching power.
36:04I don't believe that he'll knock out Peden,
36:06even though it may happen.
36:07But I think it's good for him to get this experience
36:09and to demonstrate his boxing skills.
36:11And they prepare him better for a big fight later on down the road,
36:15particularly in the career-round fight
36:16with, let's see, a guy like Marrero.
36:20Ah, Morales.
36:25Great combination.
36:27The great thing about his combinations
36:29is how he commits to each punch.
36:33He's trying to hurt his opponent,
36:35and I think opponents feel that.
36:38Peden landed a good right hand himself,
36:39and right away, Marquez returned
36:41with about four big punches together,
36:43all of them combinations.
36:53Still, the blood flows from Marquez's nose.
36:56Yeah, Marquez said it to the fighters,
36:58being that he was going to have boxing,
36:59use combinations.
37:00He's doing everything that he said he was going to do.
37:02A variety of punches and using great boxing skills.
37:13Good conditioning, too.
37:15Marquez has been up on his toes
37:17all through the fight.
37:21Big right hand.
37:23Peden just really goes back.
37:25He doesn't really have a real defense for the right hand.
37:27He just hopes that he's out of range.
37:28And if he's not out of range well,
37:30so be it.
37:33Robbie Peden busts Marquez with a left hook
37:35at the end of the round,
37:36but all in all,
37:37it was another big round
37:38for Juan Manuel Marquez
37:40and his laser right hand.
37:43Starting March 28,
37:44look for the return of
37:45On the Record with Bob Costas.
37:47After last season's successful debut,
37:50look for more of Bob with special guests
37:52from the world's of sports
37:53and entertainment.
37:55So you actually had a tryout
37:57with the Reds
37:58when you were a teenager.
37:59Two of them.
37:59I had an 85-mile-an-hour ball
38:01come at my head
38:02and I just threw myself on the ground
38:04like a little girl.
38:06And the ball just...
38:08And they all just fell on the ground laughing.
38:12Please note,
38:12On the Record's new day and time,
38:15Thursday nights at 10.30 p.m.
38:17only on HBO.
38:22Now, you've got to put some pressure.
38:24You've got to put a lot more pressure now.
38:26Keep your head down
38:27and put a lot more pressure.
38:29Peden told us
38:30that he came to America
38:32to become a professional
38:33because he didn't want to be
38:35one of those Australians
38:36who built up a record
38:38and came to America
38:39and just got beaten
38:40by the best fighters.
38:42But so far,
38:43that's exactly what is happening to him.
38:48Round seven.
38:49A CompuBox wipeout for Marquez.
38:5229 of 48.
38:5360% connect percentage
38:54in the round for Marquez
38:56who, if anything,
38:57is becoming more accurate
38:58as the fight goes on.
39:00Robbie Peden,
39:0014 out of 40.
39:02It's not a bad round numerically for him
39:04based on what has come before,
39:05but he's just getting hit too much,
39:07too sharply,
39:08too well
39:09by Juan Manuel Marquez.
39:23The most successful Australian fighter
39:26is not a native Australian.
39:29and he's Kostazou,
39:31the Russian fighter
39:33who settled in Australia
39:35and is the undisputed
39:38junior welterweight champion
39:40of the world.
39:41He had a brilliant amateur career.
39:43I think he represented Russia
39:44in his amateur.
39:45He was a fantastic amateur.
39:46I think over 300 amateur fights.
39:49Very successful
39:50against the Cuban fighters
39:51as well as the American fighters.
40:09And after his thunderbolt knockout
40:13earlier
40:15toward the end of last year
40:16against Zapchuda,
40:18Kostazou has become
40:19one of the big ticket items
40:20in the sport.
40:21The kind of guy
40:21you fight for big money
40:23if you get the chance.
40:26I don't really think
40:27he's become,
40:29you know,
40:30a big box office attraction.
40:33He's a big fighter.
40:35But so far,
40:36he hasn't proven
40:37to be a box office attraction
40:39in the U.S.
40:41I think Zapchuda himself
40:42brought more publicity
40:43Kostazou into the fight
40:45than Kostazou
40:46in that last fight.
40:49Things heating up
40:50a bit here.
40:51Here in Pittsburgh,
40:52Robbie Peden
40:52trying to make a fight
40:53against Juan Manuel Marquez
40:55and Peden
40:56lands a left hook
40:57as he corners Marquez.
40:59The problem is
41:00when they get in close
41:01in those exchanges,
41:02he's trying to deliver punches
41:03with his hands down
41:04and Marquez is delivering
41:06his hands up.
41:07And this is just
41:08general mathematics
41:10out of distance
41:10is the fact
41:11that his punches
41:12are more point-to-point
41:13where Peden's
41:14is coming from below.
41:16And as a result,
41:16he's out-punching.
41:2410 seconds.
41:27Marquez,
41:28a 2-1 favorite,
41:30performing like
41:31a 5-1 favorite
41:32so far tonight.
41:46You've got to
41:47back this man up
41:48and hit him.
41:48You can't back him up
41:49and look at him.
41:50All right?
41:52Hold that bucket up here.
41:53It's the 8th round coming.
41:559th round coming.
41:56Hold that bucket up here.
42:03Are you tired?
42:04A little bit.
42:06But I'm okay.
42:07I'm okay.
42:09You've got to use that jab.
42:10Keep jabbing.
42:13Let him come to you
42:14then turn around
42:15and hit him.
42:16You're only playing.
42:19You've got to fight
42:20almost one.
42:23Throw to the body
42:23and move your head around.
42:27for the same time.
42:30Round 8.
42:35Round 8.
42:36Round 8 numbers
42:43very similar
42:44to those in round 7.
42:45Marquez 27 out of 52.
42:47Harold Lederman
42:48gave the round
42:48to Robbie Peten
42:50who by CompuVox
42:51numbers landed
42:5111 to 41.
42:57It's not always
42:58the number of punches
42:59you land.
42:59How effective are they?
43:01How big are they?
43:03How big are they?
43:05There you go.
43:07You can't keep it.
43:09That's all you like.
43:10You can't keep it up.
43:12Don't raise up.
43:13There you go.
43:17Now let me pay.
43:19One, two,
43:19you got to know something
43:20back.
43:21Come on.
43:22Good.
43:24Good.
43:25Good.
43:26Good.
43:28Hot night
43:30inside the Palumbo
43:31center here.
43:33Both fighters
43:34have given a lot
43:35in the first
43:36eight rounds
43:36of the fight
43:37and both fighters
43:39seem to be
43:39using the first
43:40minute of the ninth
43:41to get a little bit
43:42of a breather in there.
43:46Particularly
43:46Robbie Peten
43:47who hasn't thrown much
43:49in this round.
43:50To fight with your hands
43:51down the way
43:52that Peten fights
43:52is not necessarily
43:53bad if you have
43:54very good reflexes
43:55and upper body
43:56movement.
43:57But outside
43:57of an occasional
43:58just bend down
43:59he still doesn't
44:00have the kind
44:01of reflexes
44:02especially for
44:02a small fighter
44:03to fight
44:03with his hands
44:04as low as his
44:04fighting.
44:09Well of course
44:10after having
44:11trained Tommy
44:11Hearns
44:12and some of
44:12the other
44:12great stars
44:13at Cronkton
44:14Mazian
44:15it would be
44:15wrong for you
44:16to say
44:16that a fighter
44:17has to have
44:17his hands
44:17up all the time.
44:19No but you know
44:20Tommy knew
44:20what he was
44:21doing
44:21and you never
44:22saw Tommy
44:22get him
44:22with those
44:23right hands
44:23like that.
44:24He would push
44:25his left hand
44:26out and use
44:26it as a range
44:27to hold you
44:27at a distance.
44:29He's actually
44:30Pete fights
44:31with his left
44:31hand down
44:32but it's like
44:33he forgets
44:33that it's down
44:34he fakes
44:35that it's up.
44:37Only Iran
44:38Barkley really
44:39sneaked one
44:39in on Tommy
44:40right?
44:40He did it
44:41twice.
44:42Styles make
44:43fights.
44:44Yep.
45:18Keep your head up.
45:19Ten seconds.
45:27Oh!
45:28Thugs up!
45:28Thugs up!
45:40Thugs up!
45:41And we remind you, still to come tonight, the lightweight attraction between hometown hero Paul Spadafore, the Pittsburgh Kid, and
45:48Angel Manfredi.
45:50If you've seen Manfredi over the years, you know about his body, which carries tattoos from all of the many
45:57eras and experiences in Angel's life.
46:00Tonight, for the first time in his career, Manfredi will go into the ring against a body almost equally festooned
46:08with artwork, as you called it, Larry.
46:11Rosetta Stones to their lives for these two fighters.
46:15Rosetta Stone versus Rosetta Stone.
46:19And interestingly, Spadafore has a treasured family crest on his back, but not so treasured that he didn't sell the
46:29space to a dot-com betting operation tonight
46:32and obliterate a part of the centuries-old family crest in favor of filthy lucre.
46:39Yes, from southern Italy, the family comes from.
46:43He says, a lot of Spadafores.
46:47Well, let's hope none of the Spadafores are offended by tonight's preference for dot-com betting money.
46:54Harold, how do you have it through nine here?
47:01Harold, don't talk yet.
47:03They're trading shots.
47:05And they're trading shots at a wildly entertaining rate.
47:12Marquez trying to close the show as Peden, feeling desperate, comes to him.
47:19All right, now they slow down for a second.
47:20Harold, how do you have it through nine?
47:22Okay, Jim, 87-84, six rounds to three, Juan Manuel Marquez.
47:27Jim, I want to tell you, Peden sucked him into a slugging match in the last two rounds.
47:31Marquez bleeding from the nose, looking busted up.
47:33I think Peden got the best of him, you know, in that inside slugging like they're doing right now.
47:38But here's a big Peden close to, you know, made it a little bit closer.
47:41So, six rounds to three, Juan Manuel Marquez.
47:45Interestingly enough, in that corner, you don't see them using any adrenaline in Marquez's nose.
47:49There's no Q-tips, no adrenaline.
47:51You know, it's interesting in scoring a fight.
47:54Maybe Peden may not have won some of those rounds that you've given him.
47:57But what happens, you're starting to compare rounds.
48:00He does better in certain rounds than he did in other rounds.
48:03So, you're giving a round even though he really hasn't won that round.
48:05This is how Felix Trinidad wound up with a victory over Oscar De La Hoya.
48:09In a fight in which he didn't win enough rounds to win the fight, but because judges gave him some
48:14rounds, looking for something better out of Trinidad, he ultimately wound up with a working margin.
48:19That's right.
48:20In the last three rounds, Oscar quit fighting.
48:23That's right.
48:23Not that he landed nothing, just the fact that Oscar quit fighting.
48:27And here, Peden did indeed gull Marquez into fighting more cautiously in the eighth and ninth rounds.
48:34As Marquez seemed to feel, well, maybe I've got the fight won, and with this bloody nose, I won't risk
48:39much.
48:39In fighting, you've got to keep risking.
48:41You've got to keep fighting.
48:42You can never ease up.
48:45A lot of great fights are lost because those guys took a break the last round.
48:49Trinidad won the fight, and then they ended up surprised at the decision.
48:52Colonel Whitaker in the fight with Oscar De La Hoya.
48:54Yeah, I felt that Oscar won the fight, even though Purnell maybe didn't get hit that much, but he took
48:59off the last three rounds, and Oscar kept fighting.
49:02And in certain states, certain commissions are giving instructions to their judges to give the fight to the guy who's
49:09trying to fight, often, whether he lands punches or not.
49:12We saw Leonard Doreen get a controversial decision over Raul Balby a couple of months ago, because Balby seemed to
49:18feel that he had won the fight, and Doreen kept fighting.
49:21Doreen kept fighting.
49:23Judges like to see a guy finish up strong in a fight.
49:26Regardless of if you want to fight or not, they really hate to see a fighter just take off and
49:30quit fighting at a certain point.
49:32And one thing Peten has going for him here is that Marquez has hit him a lot, but clearly he's
49:38not able to discourage him.
49:39Yeah, Marquez has hurt him sometimes this round, too.
50:00They're going to stop the fight as Robbie Peten throws up in his corner.
50:04You saw him vomit into the bucket, and you heard Roger Bloodworth say, you can't fight like that.
50:19Marquez tried to close the show in that last round, and he did.
50:25It's a beautiful performance.
50:27Good display of punching power and boxing skills.
50:30Technical knockout victory for Marquez extends to seven.
50:33The current knockout streak puts him in position for a title shot against Manuel Medina for the belt that Medina
50:40holds in the 135-pound weight class.
50:43126-pound weight class, I should say, but Marquez says, I don't want that belt.
50:49I want to fight for the one that Eric Morales now holds, regardless of what happens in the Morales-Barrera
50:55rematch in June.
50:56He wants to fight one of the other Mexican superstars.
50:59He made a very strong statement for himself tonight.
51:03The most complete performance I've seen him in against a good, tough fighter.
51:10He's ready for prime time.
51:13Closed the show, landing 30 of 58 punches in that last round, and you saw the effect on Peten as
51:22he got to his corner and threw up into the bucket.
51:25Yeah, he was bleeding inside very badly.
51:29Bad cuttings out of his mouth.
51:33The vomit was from swallowing blood.
51:35Yes.
51:37So that's the subject we discussed throughout the fight with regard to Marquez.
51:40At the end of the day, it's Peten, who swallows too much of his own blood.
51:45Hey, hey, Fernando.
51:48What's he doing?
51:50So the two Marquez brothers have stopped their opponents in the last couple of weeks.
51:57I don't recall us having brothers having done that in the past.
52:01Good for them.
52:04All right.
52:05Let's go up to ring announcer Michael Buffer and get the official particulars on Marquez's TKO victory.
52:11Ladies and gentlemen, acting on the advice of the position at ringside,
52:14referee Rick Steigerwald calls a halt to the bout.
52:18Well, the official time, the end comes at round number 10, the white TKO victory.
52:25He is Juan Manuel Marquez.
52:49Final copy box numbers, and you see the total punches.
52:53It is Marquez landing nearly half of his punches in the fight and throwing eight punches per round more than
53:03Robbie Peden.
53:05Power shots ultimately made the difference, though Marquez was better with the jab as well.
53:10Landing nearly twice as many power shots, throwing 68 more of them,
53:15and landing more than half of the power shots he threw in the fight.
53:19Outstanding performance by Juan Manuel Marquez.
53:22It's a talent-laden division, the featherweight division,
53:25but Marquez makes his statement for a bigger fight down the road.
53:30You heard what Larry Merchant had to say about it as he says this was Marquez's best all-around performance
53:36so far.
53:36We expect to see him in a big featherweight fight further down the road.
53:40Still to come tonight, the lightweight title battle in which Angel Manfredi tries to take a title belt away from
53:58Paul Spadafora.
54:00Spadafora, who has actually held a championship, a title belt in the lightweight division for a couple of years,
54:07but even he himself would acknowledge that tonight marks the first occasion on which he's fought against a true championship
54:14quality challenger.
54:15Angel Manfredi tries to take a title belt in the lightweight division for a couple of years,
