00:00Text line coming through, Tyler.
00:01Anyone who plans on paying CJ will regret it.
00:04I guess we're going to find out.
00:06That we will.
00:09Only time can tell now.
00:13I mean, here text has said,
00:14Clint always wants them to coach and do things how he would do it.
00:21Selfish, really.
00:22You're wrong.
00:24Neither of y'all.
00:26Tyler or him.
00:27Yeah, no, I just, I mean, it's not about what I would or wouldn't do.
00:31It's what I want to see out of my team.
00:33I've just been there and done it.
00:34And I know there's a, if you're in complete control,
00:38one of the easiest ways for you to see it when you're watching practice
00:41is the one more obvious time in a drill.
00:45And if that two-minute drill is sloppy
00:47and the OC has to re-huddle everybody
00:49instead of the quarterback taking control,
00:51that quarterback doesn't have complete control or command of the situation.
00:56And, again, this is, that was not a, it's C.J. Stroud
01:00because he happens to be the quarterback,
01:01but this is a more disappointing in the whole operation,
01:04not just one guy.
01:07All right.
01:09Yeah.
01:10We'll see what happens tomorrow as they're back out there again.
01:13But, Clint, C.J. was not,
01:15and that two-minute drill was not the only thing you saw today.
01:18They were out there for a while, as you said earlier.
01:21And there were some things that stood out to you
01:25and some things that maybe you're viewing
01:28or looking at a little bit differently after coming away from it.
01:31Yeah.
01:32Look, I think the one thing that really stands out offensively for me
01:36on the field is this tight end group.
01:38Even with Marlon Klein, the second-round pick rookie,
01:42that, you know, there's some high hopes for there.
01:44Even with him out and not practicing,
01:47and you look at this group and you could see if everybody can stay healthy,
01:51you could see, you know, some 12 personnel,
01:54one back, two tight end type situations.
01:57You could see some 13 personnel, one back, three tight ends
02:01because you've got, not only do you have,
02:03I think you've got four tight ends that can legitimately play at the NFL level,
02:10you've got four tight ends,
02:11and I think they all complement each other, if we're being honest.
02:14You've got Cade Stover, Brevin Jordan, Dalton Schultz, obviously,
02:18and then you've got Foster Moreau.
02:21So you've got guys that actually complement each and roll there
02:25and do a lot of different things with those guys.
02:26Again, assuming that Nick Cayley can get creative with these tight ends,
02:30you've got an opportunity.
02:31In a world where the NFL is starting to see a lot more of the exotic 12 personnels
02:36and 13 personnels, I do see where this team could have,
02:40instead of having to put Blake Fisher in there and go on a sixth offensive lineman
02:44and hoping that Dalton Schultz can keep it together,
02:49this could be a group that you see, assuming everybody's healthy,
02:51you could see a lot of that 12 and 13 personnel
02:53and even some creative stuff with those guys because they do all complement.
02:57Brevin Jordan looks really good.
02:59Cade Stover looks thinner.
03:00That's what you said.
03:01You like what Cade Stover looked like.
03:03I mean, last year he was wearing, what, 87?
03:06Is that right?
03:07Hey, he better get his ass together because, to me, when you look at the group,
03:13I think it's going to be a real competitive group
03:16because you could make the case why all of them would stay.
03:20If I were to go head hard, gun to my head hard,
03:23or scroll to places I don't want to get shot and say who is the one most likely
03:28to be cut or moved on from, I would say probably either Cade or Brevin.
03:34And I'd probably lean towards Cade based off what they did last year
03:39because Brevin has kind of just like a unique talent.
03:42Yeah.
03:42Well, Brevin is definitely being held on to and has been held on to
03:45because of the ceiling, the explosiveness, the athletic ability at that position,
03:49kind of that hybrid guy is the going thing in the league if you can get him
03:53to produce, if you can get him to stay healthy in this case.
03:55But, you know, and then you look at Cade, and he was more developmental
03:59when he came in, and so can he take that next step?
04:01Where I was going with that, Ron, is I think he was wearing an 80 number
04:04wearing high-top Jordans when we saw him in OTAs.
04:07I mean, this year he's got what appeared to be a low-top white shoe on,
04:11wearing number eight.
04:12He looks quicker.
04:13He looks a lot leaner.
04:14I don't know if that's the number or the shoes.
04:18But I had to look him up.
04:19I'm watching him move and run routes, and I'm thinking,
04:21who's that thinner guy that's moving around pretty good?
04:25And it was Cade Stover.
04:27So, point being, Ron, I think it's pretty obvious.
04:30They've got a really, really good tight end room that's not just good.
04:34Again, I think it's important to note that I think these guys complement each other
04:38really, really well.
04:40And so, I think that's one thing that really stood out.
04:43Staying on the offensive side of the football, Ron,
04:46we saw this last year in OTAs immediately.
04:49We went in and watched the rookie-wide receivers.
04:51It was about Higgins and Knoll.
04:53What do they look like?
04:54Who's getting the ball?
04:55What's going on there?
04:56And I thought then that Jalen Knoll jumped off the field.
04:59It seems like the ball finds him.
05:00He's very quarterback-friendly.
05:02And I'm going to tell you, man, the one guy that I think embodies,
05:06or let's say that you watch the practice today,
05:11and when you hear guys talking about the motions are sharper,
05:14the shifts are sharper, the pre-snap movements are sharper,
05:17routes are sharper, there's no doubt about it
05:20that Jalen Knoll is the one that exemplifies that.
05:26I mean, you watch him again, the ball finds him multiple times
05:29at all levels of the field, quick game, mid-range game, and deep.
05:33I mean, it just, he is the guy that I don't like that Nick Casario
05:38and D'Amico Rhines have pushed all their chips to the middle of the table
05:42and with this skill group instead of the one that I have to light it up.
05:47But when I do watch Jalen Knoll at practice, he looks like he's going to light it up.
05:52He looks the part, man.
05:54And once again, it jumps off the field where he's at, when he's moving,
05:58the ball finds him, it's promising.
06:00Again, a lot of people are high and thinking Higgins potentially has a breakout.
06:08We've heard D'Amico talk about how he's kind of changed his body
06:12and how he looks coming in.
06:14For me, Jalen Knoll right now,
06:17it doesn't seem like there's another real slot on the team right now.
06:21A lot of people look at Tank's size and think that,
06:24now we'll see this completely different offensive group that may push him towards the slot.
06:30But right now, Jalen Knoll seems to be the only one right there.
06:33There is no Christian Kirk in front of him that's taking away time anymore.
06:39And to me, between him and Higgins, I would think Knoll has the chance
06:44because we've seen that position used big time in this offense
06:48by a multitude of guys in the New England
06:52and all those years that have done this.
06:55And, I mean, he showed last year.
06:57He showed, you know, an ability to get open quickly.
07:01He showed an ability.
07:02He not only not, like you think about the slot,
07:05you think about, you know, those quick, you know, two-way goes, five yards,
07:10those just option routes, yeah.
07:13He got open down the field in his few opportunities.
07:16He made big plays down the field in his few opportunities.
07:20Well, the other one that you can't forget about is Hutch.
07:23I mean, I know we always talk about him as a depth receiver and a guy, boy,
07:28he's really dependent.
07:28Boy, if somebody gets hurt, he can be there.
07:30It wouldn't surprise me if he wasn't a bigger piece of this offense.
07:33Knowing the people, the minds behind this offense,
07:36knowing kind of how they operate,
07:38it wouldn't surprise me if he wasn't a bigger piece of the plan moving forward.
07:43He's earned it.
07:44I mean, he's played really well when he's been given the opportunity.
07:48And, you know, talking about yesterday, watching these wide receivers
07:52and watching the wide receivers, Tank Dale's year,
07:55and how Tank Dale really stood out with his route running stuff.
07:57I'm watching the wide receivers again today,
07:59and they're running a release drill where they're releasing,
08:02getting hit with a pad, they're getting vertical on the line,
08:04and they're getting to a dummy, and they're chopping their feet down
08:07and catching a ball over their outside shoulder.
08:08It's crazy to watch the twitchier, really more veteran guys do that
08:14and then watch the younger guys do it.
08:16It almost looks like you've got lazy, lackadaisical receivers out there,
08:19and then all of a sudden Jalen Knoll goes,
08:21and then all of a sudden Xavier Hutchinson goes,
08:23and you're just like, that's what the damn drill's supposed to look like.
08:27So don't forget about Xavier Hutchinson.
08:29He's one that I know.
08:30He won't let us.
08:31Yeah, no, no, he's going to be there.
08:32It's just how big of a role does he play?
08:35Yeah, so Jalen Knoll, who I think if he gets a chance,
08:41he's got a chance to tight ends.
08:43And I know on the defensive side of the ball, the EJ speed injury,
08:48we talked about it.
08:49Is it going to force them to go outside of the building to bring somebody in,
08:52or do they have that inside?
08:54Well, I think you've got the best-case scenario for an EJ speed injury.
08:59What I saw today is the first time that I've laid my eyes on Wade Woodhead
09:04as the linebacker out of Clemson.
09:08I mean, he's 6'3", 240, y'all.
09:10He is a long lean.
09:12He's an EJ speed body.
09:14At least it's what he looks like in sweats.
09:16I mean, he's a guy that is going to cover a lot of space
09:22because he's so long, long wingspan, can stride out.
09:26And I don't know that he plays at the same speed.
09:28We'll see.
09:28I hope he does.
09:29We'll see if he plays at the same speed at the NFL level.
09:32But he was significantly, I think, longer than I expected.
09:36So he's a guy body-wise.
09:39You know, a lot of these guys, the backup linebackers, you see them,
09:41you're like, well, they're built and really here to be special teams guys
09:44and depth linebackers.
09:47He's a guy that when you lay eyes on him, you're like, no,
09:49that dude right there.
09:50Now, anything can happen.
09:51But that dude right there looks like D'Amico Ryans can't wait to get him
09:55to a point where he can get on the field.
09:57He says he stays close.
09:59That's his baby.
10:00This is literally what he said today.
10:02I bet you by mid-year, I bet you that cat –
10:04and I'm just going strictly off of length and size and kind of what he – build.
10:08I bet you by mid-years, D'Amico's got him rocking and rolling
10:12and getting some run on his defense, especially with the EJ speed injury.
10:16I bet you he's a big part of it by mid-year.
10:19That's his special teams, huh?
10:20He don't strike me as – not long.
10:22It may not be – you know, some of these cats have been here three,
10:23four years, and they're still special teams first guys.
10:25Guys, I don't – I mean, hell, if I'm Wood as, I don't mind that life,
10:30but I see him getting more run on the – actually on the defense
10:33in that rotation at that linebacker position.
10:35And assuming he can play with some similar speed to EJ speed, no pun intended,
10:41there's not a better situation for a young linebacker to be in the NFL.
10:45You're inside to a corner tandem that's as good or better
10:49than any corner tandem in the league, and you're playing inside a defensive line
10:53that's going to command double teams across the board.
10:55So you ought to be able to run and roam freely with a lot of space.
10:59So I don't know if there's a more linebacker-friendly defense in all of football
11:05than right here in Houston, both with D'Amico Ryans as well as a supporting cast.
11:10So, hell, if you can't get in this system and make plays,
11:14then, boy, I don't know where you can't.
11:16Yeah.
11:18I love the text line, 713-572-4610.
11:21I love people who listen on the Odyssey app.
11:26It is –
11:26A-U-D-A-C-Y.
11:27There you go.
11:28It is great.
11:30I do think it's weird for somebody to pick up and listen to the Odyssey app
11:35and then start to text in to the text line no matter what time you're listening.
11:42Did you connect it, though?
11:43Did you figure it out?
11:43Somebody just text in,
11:45Pendergast, you leave the Houston goat alone.
11:48If he wants to bunt or tag up, pop up, or leave his window open,
11:54Jose Altuve is the best.
11:56Not good, Sean.
11:57Is that somebody listening?
11:58Pendergast drive-by.
12:00Is that somebody listening on the Odyssey app
12:01and then decided to text in at 452?
12:06It could be like a boomer that doesn't really realize it's a different time of day.
12:10That's that old Pendergast podcast.
12:12I don't even mean that disrespectfully.
12:15Technology is a challenge for a certain generation,
12:18just like crosswords are a challenge for mine.
12:20Don't say that you don't mean that in a disrespect from a boomer who doesn't know.
12:26Yes, you do.
12:27Completely that was disrespect.
12:28In my life experience, the boomers I know do not do well with technology,
12:33but they have great life advice and they're beautiful people.
12:37That's a good follow-up.
12:38That's a great follow-up.
12:39He was not going to give that follow-up until I called him out on his boomers.
12:45That's because we know you and you do your little impressions of old people
12:49and you do, and he makes fun of old people regularly.
12:56It's just sad.
12:58It's a screw-go, leave him alone.
13:00But my man, whoever that is, boy, they must be out there listening.
13:03Man, I got to text into this thing.
13:05Hey, bro.
13:07That happened about 7.30.
13:11Boy, that escalated quickly.
13:15We appreciate you texting in, 713-572-4610.
13:19I hope we have some people listening to us on the podcast page.
13:237.30 in the morning.
13:24Yeah, damn it.
13:25Hey, Ben.
13:26Yeah, do us a favor.
13:27When you get to the drive, text the text line.
13:30It'll be 7.30 in the morning.
13:31Yeah, whenever you get to.
13:33All right, coming up.
13:34Text Payne and Pendergast and say, stop being so negative.
13:37Yeah, seriously, guys.
13:39Well, you weren't there.
13:41How do you know?
13:42Maybe CJ wasn't supposed to be doing that in the huddle,
13:44and maybe that was what they were working on.
13:46Yeah.
13:47God, Clint, you get on my nerves.
13:49Sam.
13:50Oh, so negative.
13:51God, man.
13:53Jesus.
13:54Whoa.
