00:00All right, you were at camp day two today, Clint.
00:04You're out there to see how these boys look as this could be.
00:08This could be the final day of mandatory minicamp.
00:10They are scheduled to go tomorrow, too,
00:12but no one will be surprised if they don't finish out the final day.
00:17That happens a lot around the NFL
00:18and has happened with the Texans under D'Amico.
00:21But what were your observations today?
00:24What did you see out at camp today?
00:26Well, I think there was an interception early in 7-on-7, I believe it was.
00:33Maybe it was teams. I think it was 7-on-7.
00:35And it was a pick six.
00:37And I've got two angles here.
00:39One is the obvious, and two is Jalen Petrie.
00:45I heard a report in OTAs, one of the ones that the media could go to,
00:48that Jalen Petrie had picked CJ in some team drills.
00:53And then today, Ron, I mean, he undercuts a flat route
00:57that should have never been thrown.
00:58But he undercuts a flat route that is, and I'm talking about it,
01:01he looks like the damn receiver running the route to catch it
01:03and undercuts him.
01:04And it would have been, it would have been,
01:06if there was only one going in, it would have been 99 untouched.
01:09And I just, you know, yesterday as I'm watching practice as well,
01:14I said D'Amico doesn't appear to be calling off the dogs,
01:17or at least didn't yesterday.
01:18Saturday, and they're bringing blitzes all over the place.
01:20And the very first one, Petrie comes unblocked off the edge,
01:24jumps up in the quarterback's face, could have blocked the pass down,
01:26but didn't.
01:28I just, I get to thinking about Petrie.
01:32And I know Petrie gets some love,
01:34but are we giving him enough love for what he potentially could be
01:38in this defense?
01:39Well, I mean, he was showing it last year,
01:41and I think he also had the concussion.
01:44Him and CJ had those concussions at the same time.
01:47And I think that probably messed up a lot of his potential awards.
01:51I think he would have been a Pro Bowl type of player.
01:54No, man, he is, he is,
01:56it took them a bit to find out the best role for him.
02:00Yeah.
02:01But now they have found it.
02:02Yeah.
02:03And he seems to have thrived.
02:04We talk a lot about Stingley.
02:06We talk a lot about Will.
02:07We talk a lot about Aziz.
02:09Obviously, even Kamari and Bullock get some love.
02:14And all rightfully so.
02:16But, and maybe I just need to speak for myself.
02:18I just, a lot of times I leave Petrie out, not purposefully,
02:22but just because I don't think of his name when we start talking about
02:26the best players on this defense.
02:28I'm not sure, Ron, that he's not the one guy that, I mean, he may,
02:31he, it wouldn't, would it surprise you if he went out there
02:34and became the best slot corner in the league,
02:36or slot defender in the league?
02:37Nickel defender, if you want to call it that.
02:41Not surprised.
02:42His coverage skills have improved.
02:44I still think that's probably his weakness.
02:46But, but, but yeah, he, he is definitely a difference maker
02:50that seems to find himself around the ball.
02:52And I think one of them have found a way not to get him in trouble,
02:56not to put him in that spot.
02:58Well, it's going to, it's going to look different than your nickel.
03:01Most of the times when you say, somebody says nickel defender,
03:03you think cover guy.
03:04I mean, the nickel defender with, is for Jalen Petrie,
03:09I think is a lot like corner with, with Kamari Lasseter.
03:12I think the value is as great as, as the best in the, in the game.
03:16It's just going to look different.
03:17Like today.
03:18I mean, I, I'll put him up against anybody in,
03:21in terms of, of covering underneath routes and,
03:24and undercutting and playing with instincts,
03:26playing the pass as well as the pass rush with instincts.
03:29Now, again, you get him with an offensive,
03:31a defensive line that can't rush and make him cover guys.
03:3415, 20 yards downfield, Jass is in trouble.
03:36But in this defense with what, the way he's going to have to play,
03:40that nickel defender position, I could see him being not just Pro Bowl,
03:44I could see him being an all pro,
03:47an all pro nickel defender in this league.
03:51Now, I don't know that they're ever going to get that deep
03:52because Stingley's going to get it first.
03:54Will's going to get it.
03:55Daniil's going to get the love.
03:56There's a bunch of guys ahead of him that are going to get the love,
03:58just from a name perspective maybe.
03:59But if, if, if he makes the right plays and has enough turnovers come his way
04:04and gets enough sacks kind of deal, just enough, whatever that is,
04:07to, to, to ruffle some feathers.
04:09I mean, you're talking about a guy that,
04:12that I think, I think's got the skill to be not just a Pro Bowl,
04:15but an all pro player.
04:16No, he, he's definitely, he definitely played at a Pro Bowl level.
04:21Yeah.
04:21He definitely, to me, should have been a Pro Bowler.
04:24Now, I think what hurts him is when you think of this defense,
04:30potentially how many guys do you think of before you get to Jalen Peake?
04:35That's right.
04:35Do you get, do you think of the ends?
04:38Yes.
04:38Do you think of Stingley?
04:39Yes.
04:40Do you think of Aziz?
04:41Yes.
04:41Do you think of, do you think of Lasseter?
04:44Right.
04:45That's, that's, that's, that's five, that's five deep right there.
04:48And then Bullock is probably a season away from making enough plays
04:52in the middle of the field that you think of him before you.
04:55So that, that's probably the only thing, but he definitely played at that level.
04:59Well, so Petrie at practice, again, every practice you go to,
05:02he sticks out, he jumps off the field.
05:05And the flip side of that is, is the, the actual interception.
05:09Look, it was a ball CJ never should have thrown.
05:11Um, I mean, I think we've seen three, two days of, of football, three or four interceptions
05:17from CJ Stroud.
05:18Um, this ball should have never been thrown.
05:21In fact, from a quarterback's perspective, it's exact.
05:23You want a nickel defender to jump a flat route like this because the window, the void in the
05:28defense that's left behind that guy is massive.
05:31And it is as clean a read.
05:33Now I couldn't see the defense.
05:34I don't know exactly what the defense was doing, but when Jalen jumps that thing, that
05:38clearly leaves a void, you're, you're running a flat route or, or an arrow or whatever you
05:42want to call it.
05:43You're running that route in hopes that somebody will jump it, draw the coverage down so you
05:46can throw in a hole behind it or over the top of it.
05:48And, uh, the way he jumped it, clearly there had to be some kind of void behind it.
05:53And, and CJ didn't get there.
05:55So, um, ball should have never been thrown.
05:57Cade Stover.
05:58Again, I'm telling you, Ron, wait, wait, wait.
05:59Second day in a row.
06:00Wait till you see him.
06:01You know, you know, you know that route where they release vertical and kind of get over the
06:05top of the linebacker and then instead of going vertically, stick their foot in the ground
06:08and kind of whip back out of it, out wide.
06:10He was running, and it don't even look like the same dude.
06:14I mean, it looked like the same guy.
06:16And, and it is, it is, he is moving really, really, really, really good.
06:21And he looks significantly thinner.
06:22So I don't know if that's health.
06:24I don't know if that's weight, um, or what, but, but, but he's, he's one of my top guys
06:28coming in.
06:29You think it's the, you think it's the Jersey number?
06:30Well, the Jersey number and the white shoes that I talked about yesterday, I think that definitely
06:34But you, but you say body wise, I can't wait for you.
06:36I want you to see him just running routes.
06:38Like he, I'm going to tell you, this is crazy.
06:39People ain't going to believe this, but when they're running, they're all running routes.
06:43He's very, very close to Brevin Jordan.
06:46Really?
06:46With the speed and the pivot and the, the in and out of breaks and the, yeah.
06:50And I, and I would have bet going before I saw it, I would have bet that he would pale
06:55in comparison.
06:56Yeah.
06:56Not, not from the speed and when they're running routes with just the foot speed and the in
07:01and out of cuts, he is, he is significantly closer to Brevin Jordan than he is Dalton Schultz
07:07and, and, and Foster Moreau, kind of the, the slower, lower Twitch guys.
07:11It's crazy to think, but he is, he is definitely looking like that.
07:15So Stover, um, Noel, uh, Hutchinson, even, um, those are the three guys on the offensive side
07:24of the ball that, that, where I think we need weapons.
07:26Those are the three guys on the offensive side of the ball that I'm, I'm like, look out now
07:30there's an opportunity, there's gonna be an opportunity there for you.
