00:00Ian Rappaport yesterday on the NFL Network, what Washington would like to do is sign Brandon Iyuk without trading for
00:07him.
00:08You know, the one thing about this whole Brandon Iyuk saga that would really anger me is if somehow Washington
00:16ended up sending a late, you know, round 2027 pick for Iyuk.
00:21You know, even if when he got here, they tore up his current deal and structured a better deal.
00:28I don't want any compensation paid for him, and I don't want any deal other than a one-year prove
00:37-it deal.
00:38Now, of course, I'm basing that off what I think I know, which isn't a lot, because the only thing
00:44that we do know, as I've said multiple times now for a few months,
00:48the only thing that we truly know to be borderline factual is that this dude had between $27 million and
01:00$40 million,
01:01depending on which report you believe, voided from his deal because he violated his contract.
01:11And according to all of the reporting, all he had to do to make sure that there was no way
01:18that that money could be voided from the deal was to post once or twice a month at the 49er
01:25facility
01:25to let the team's physicians monitor his outside-the-building rehab.
01:33And he didn't do it.
01:35And then, on top of that, that's unprecedented to begin with.
01:39Never has a player in the history of the league had that much guaranteed money voided from his contract by
01:47a team.
01:48And then the second part of it is, and this is the tell about, you know, who's at fault here,
01:55is that as of now, Brandon Iyuk, Brandon Iyuk's agent, Brandon Iyuk's legal representation,
02:05nor the NFLPA, the union, no one has gone after that money.
02:12This is terrible in terms of a precedent for the NFL Players Association, the union.
02:19And even they couldn't come up with a reason to say, uh-uh, uh-uh, 49ers, you can't do that.
02:27You can't void that.
02:29Even they said, open, shut case, nothing we can do.
02:34You're an idiot.
02:36Now, there's a chance maybe they're planning on going after it.
02:41And I don't think there's a statute of limitations on them going after it.
02:46But, you know, in all of the conversation from that, you know, video in which he, you know,
02:54goes through that one spot where he's saying, you know, they're talking about B.A. did this,
02:59B.A. did that, B.A. did this, allegedly, he said, allegedly, well, then why aren't you going after your
03:07money?
03:09Go get it back.
03:11Prove that they did it incorrectly.
03:14That you didn't violate your contract in a dumb way.
03:19But so far that hasn't happened.
03:21That's the only thing we know at this point.
03:25You know, the rant yesterday, do you have that right now, Max, just to refresh everybody,
03:32the video Instagram that he put out over the weekend?
03:36Can you just play that for everybody if they haven't heard it?
03:39Absolutely.
03:39Give me one second.
03:40Let me pull it out because I am recording Dan Quinn still.
03:42He just wrapped up.
03:44Dan Quinn speaking.
03:44We'll have some of that sound next hour.
03:46I'm sorry.
03:47Grabbing.
03:47I use Instagram story.
03:49Now, it's taking forever because our computers are slow and I'm filibustering.
03:52But here is Brandon Ayuk on his Instagram story.
03:57We're dealing with, you know, like them kids and they don't get picked for the basketball game at the court.
04:07But they're the ones that brought the ball.
04:09So they're like, all right, you don't want to pick me?
04:12I'm taking my ball.
04:13I'm going home.
04:15Ass boys.
04:16Little ass boys.
04:19Like when your kid, he got this one toy, but he don't really know how to use it correctly.
04:27So somebody else about to pick it up and play with it.
04:31And they're like, oh, yeah, this shit.
04:33Let it.
04:34Wait, wait, wait, wait.
04:35Hold on.
04:35That's my toy.
04:37Ass boy.
04:38Little ass boy.
04:39Wait, man, stop running from the belt.
04:42The belt coming.
04:46Yeah.
04:47So that's what he said.
04:49That was, you know, a part of it.
04:50He also referred to them as little, little female dogs.
04:53There were basically two big takeaways from this message, which, by the way, it's the first time we've heard from
05:00him in a while other than just, you know, cryptic messages or videos that were sent.
05:06And the two big takeaways or the two themes from his video message were, number one, the 49ers are petty
05:14and they're children.
05:15Hence the, you know, the analogies to, you know, a ball being taken away from the court because they didn't
05:22get picked.
05:23And there was, you know, another kid with a toy analogy.
05:26And the second theme from that message was, get ready because I'm bringing the belt.
05:34You know, eventually I'm going to end up in Washington and on October 19th, Monday night football, I'm coming back
05:43and I'm bringing the belt.
05:45Belt to backside, as the kids say.
05:48They say it a little bit differently.
05:50And get ready for that.
05:52But, you know, time will tell as to whether this is sound strategy in trying to get the 49ers to
06:01release him.
06:03I don't know why all of a sudden he has started to become more active on social media and then
06:10produce this video.
06:12I did have somebody tell me that he was hoping that post June 1st that they would just release him.
06:19Keep in mind, they could have released him before June 1st with a June 1st or a post June 1st
06:25designation if they had wanted to do that.
06:30But will it work?
06:32I think the one thing that could work that could end this for him and give him his freedom sooner
06:40rather than later.
06:41The later is, and the latest would be, based on what we know, August 31st.
06:48Because on September 1st, if he is still on the roster, and I don't know if the current exemption that
06:55he has, you know, a left roster or left squad list, the reserve left squad list.
07:01I don't know what that means to the September 1st payment contractually that they would owe him.
07:08But let's just say that they could take it to August 31st.
07:12The only way to shorten up that process is for him to, you know, instead of video message out what
07:20children the 49ers are and what a tough guy he is, is for him to be a tough guy and
07:26show up.
07:27He didn't show up for any of the voluntary OTAs.
07:31They canceled the minicamp.
07:33You know, I'll say what I said yesterday, and then Ben said it even more forcefully when he was on
07:38yesterday.
07:39The chances that they canceled that minicamp because they didn't want him to report are slim and none.
07:46Like, you're not going to put the betterment of the football team having a minicamp for 89 other players.
07:56You're not going to cancel it for this wingnut.
07:59And by the way, he's already proven that he's not willing to show up for anything.
08:02For, you know, coming up on a year now.
08:05We're coming up on seven months now.
08:10So, if training camp is the next mandatory have to be there, he needs to show up on that July
08:1925th or July 26th, whatever the date is.
08:23We should probably look that up.
08:24Look that up, Max, when the 49ers training camp, when the veteran report date is for training camp.
08:31Because that's the next have to be there if you're on their roster.
08:35He's on the roster even with the exemption.
08:38He's under contract, I should say.
08:41But he's on this, you know, reserve left squad list.
08:46Which means, basically, he's, you know, AWOL.
08:49He's MIA.
08:50And they don't have to do anything.
08:52They don't have to pay him.
08:53And they, I guess they can fill the roster spot with another body until they take him off that list.
08:58But the next have to show up for date is the beginning of training camp.
09:03And if he really wants to play football, rather than just be the, you know, video messenger, to be the
09:16Instagram poster, to be a story that has nothing to do with football, then he'll show up for camp.
09:25And then we'll find out whether or not the 49ers are willing to put up with all of the activity
09:31that would be centered on the status of Brandon Ayuk.
09:37But if he's not there, if he doesn't have the stones to show up for training camp, then they don't
09:45have to do anything.
09:47And I don't know for how long, but there's the payment that Mike Gennetti from SpotTrack, when he was on
09:52with us, he said there's a 20-something million dollar payment due on September 1st if he is still under
09:59contract and on the team.
10:03And at that point, if they cut him then, without getting anything back from anybody, then Washington signs him to
10:11approve a deal.
10:12And then, you know, can he get ready for the regular season opener at Philadelphia?
10:18Can he get ready for week two at Dallas?
10:20Can he get ready for week three against Seattle?
10:23You know, I certainly think by week six, he'd be ready to go.
10:27Jay Gruden told me not that long ago, he didn't think that Brandon Ayuk, coming from a Kyle Shanahan system
10:34into a system that may be somewhat similar, he didn't think that he needed a full training camp to get
10:40ready.
10:44But, yeah, I mean, did you have the start date or the report date for veterans?
10:49I'm still trying to find, because the earliest one I can find is July 23rd.
10:53I believe that's the first one, but they're selling tickets for July 23rd.
10:56So I'm not sure if that's the first one that's open to the public or if it's just the first
11:00one in general.
11:01Okay.
11:01So it's going to be, you know, we're a month and a half probably away from the next critical date,
11:08unless somehow they decide, you know, enough is enough.
11:12I'm going to stick with the way I feel right now based on what I know, and I don't know
11:15enough, nor do you people.
11:17I mean, it doesn't seem like anybody in San Francisco knows the root cause of all of this.
11:23And maybe we'll learn one day that the root cause of this was justifiable from his standpoint.
11:29I don't think anything's justifiable when you're 27 years old to throw away the amount of money that he threw
11:36away for maybe principal.
11:39I don't know what it would be he was standing on.
11:41But there's going to be a point in time that he's going to probably wish he didn't do that.
11:47Now, he's made generational money.
11:49They've paid him a lot of money with that contract that they signed him to in 24.
11:54But if I were a 49ers fan, I would not want to do Washington or anybody else any favors by
12:02giving that player to that team so that he could have a full training camp.
12:08Why?
12:09Uh, this isn't a guy that's beloved.
12:12This isn't a guy that if you, you know, take that tact, it's going to, it's going to be viewed
12:18as disrespectful.
12:20We've already seen multiple people in 49er land.
12:23We had Dante Wittner on this show.
12:25We've had others.
12:26We've played the TJ Hushmanzada stuff.
12:28He was his personal, you know, coach there for a while.
12:32None of them think that the 49ers should turn them loose.
12:36Most of them think the behavior is not only unprecedented, it's ridiculous.
12:44Um, anyway, that's what Rappaport said, coming back full circle to what we played coming into the segment.
12:51Rappaport basically said what Washington would like to do is sign him without trading for him.
12:56I would be upset if they traded anything for him.
12:59I want this to be, Hey, our doctors looked at you physically.
13:05You're ready to go.
13:06Our psychologists looked at you.
13:07You're mentally stable enough.
13:09We're paying you a one-year deal, 9 million, 10 million base salary.
13:15You get paid as you go on base salary.
13:18And here are a bunch of incentives that if you perform, you could end up making $20 million this year.
13:24Take it or leave it.
13:26But we're not entering into a deal that puts us at risk.
13:30If you end up being completely nuts, we can terminate this thing at any time without any residual, you know,
13:38cost moving forward.
