Transcript
00:28You
00:30You
00:32We're basically shutting down the gate. They're gonna be controlling who comes and who goes. Okay, it's out of your
00:38control was the nature
00:40That's not for your business. We're serving a search warrant. You're 30. You got it
00:45Now we're through the gate the subject I repeat the subject is not on property copy
00:52Here's the bridge we're gonna go and the house is right there
00:59You
00:59You guys need a uniform with you
01:00How you doing sheriff's department we have a search warrant?
01:10This is a Fox News alert police right now searching Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch in California
01:16We are told this is part of an ongoing investigation alleging criminal misconduct on the part of Michael Jackson
01:25Oh
01:34This is mr. Jackson's main area
01:38Sheriff's Department
01:45Whose office is this this is this is Michael's
01:52Okay, are there any secret rooms secret room? Yeah behind a wall or something like that or anything like that?
01:58No
02:07The phone rings and he says Brian the police are raiding Neverland ranch. What are they doing there? Mr. Jackson?
02:15I don't know. I don't know
02:18He says get your leads find out
02:27Okay, there could be something in here, okay, somebody needs to go through it. Hey Jeff we have an upstairs
02:38The search warrant indicates that there is an accusation by a 12 year old boy who says that he was
02:43molested
02:44It appears that they think there's some kind of forensic evidence which would be available to them which would include
02:50DNA hair samples blood samples
02:52We don't know we don't know the identity of the child. We don't know the specifics of the accusations
03:00When you're investigating an allegation of child sexual abuse you rarely have witnesses to it
03:06We're looking for anything that we could find that tell us that this child is giving us accurate information
03:16He's the most famous man in the world who's being accused of the most heinous crime in the world
03:24An arrest warrant for mr. Jackson has been issued on multiple counts of child molestation
03:31Finally we're gonna get some answers is he guilty or is he not guilty
03:43I
03:45Met Michael Jackson
03:47in
03:491970 he was 12 I was 14 and
03:54We became friends
03:56I told you
03:58That I love Michael you love my as a musician you can see the genius of Michael Jackson on stage
04:05since the age of five
04:06Of world Michael Jackson is a superstar the outstanding example you have set for the youth of America still number
04:11one after 57 weeks on the charts
04:13Thriller is still to this day the biggest selling record of all time
04:17His album Thriller the winner of seven Grammy Awards was still selling a million copies a year
04:2315 years after its release
04:27Without exaggeration I think Michael was the most famous person in the world all the amazing talent
04:39But then you know you began to see the changes in him
04:43I mean, let's face it. He's a little weird, you know, he's just a little weird
04:51The media was terrible to Michael Jackson with all the wacko Jacko stuff, which was horrible
04:57What's with the hyperbaric chamber?
05:00What's with the plastic surgery and Michael he felt like he was lonely and isolated
05:04But he was determined to live his life his way
05:09Michael became friends with all these kids, you know, he didn't think it was strange, but other people did
05:17A thirteen-year-old boy alleges a sexual relationship with Michael Jackson
05:23The idea of Michael Jackson being a pedophile was like the mind-blowing it was the most far-fetched ridiculous
05:29thing you could have imagined
05:31The pop star angrily rejected accusations he molested a young boy and lashed out at police and the media there
05:38have been many
05:39Disgusting statements made recently concerning allegations of improper conduct on my part
05:46These statements about me are totally false after all these terrible allegations about Michael
05:52He had a hard time not just artistically, but personally too. I saw the hell that it had inflicted on
05:58him
05:58He was so traumatized by that time
06:00He needed like a reset where he could actually tackle some of these issues and his image in the public
06:07eye
06:16The first time I met Michael in London June 2002
06:23His face is very heavily made up
06:26His hair is kind of messy. He looks as though he hadn't slept for very long
06:35And it had been some years since he was the king of pop
06:42And yet there's nobody comparable to the size and magnitude of a Michael Jackson
06:47And the other thing that obviously caused an enormous amount of interest
06:51Were the scandals that surrounded him and allegations of child sexual abuse some years previously
06:57I said
06:58I'd love to make a film with you if you were interested
07:01He said okay come and see me in California
07:05Talking about it with Michael I came to understand that the reason Michael was interested in Martin Bashir was because
07:11of his interview with Princess Diana
07:13Who was somebody that Michael really kind of idolized
07:18He wanted to be portrayed in a more human way by the guy who did it
07:23For Princess Diana
07:25But Michael didn't do enough research
07:28Because if he had done it he would have realized that the Martin Bashir Princess Diana interview was kind of
07:33a disaster
07:34Do you think Mrs. Parker Bowles was a factor in the breakdown of your marriage?
07:39Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded
07:44That was the interview in which she talked about three in a marriage and it really set her at odds
07:50with the royal family and
07:52It was a public relations disaster
07:57But Michael didn't follow the story all the way to that
08:00He just stopped at the point where he wanted to do it because Princess Diana did it
08:05Michael trusted Martin Bashir and then Martin Bashir he was looking for a great story
08:10And Michael sort of handed him this opportunity on a silver platter
08:17We didn't think that Neverland was going to be the place where this whole thing unraveled
08:33When I got on to Neverland I couldn't believe what I was seeing
08:36It was extraordinary there's this ferris wheel a massive fairground
08:40And then I rode towards the zoo and I can remember seeing elephants giraffes and a bear
08:48I made it clear that I wanted to understand his life
08:53I thought he had a strange relationship with children
08:57There had been allegations before there had been settlements
09:04Do you come out here on your own?
09:05Yeah
09:06How often?
09:07All the time
09:08You just come out on your own?
09:09Yes
09:10And go on a ride?
09:11Yep
09:12Usually the carousel I play music
09:14I love playing classical music on the carousel
09:17And what about the ferris wheel?
09:19I like the ferris wheel makes you wish and dream and
09:22Can we go on it?
09:24Sure
09:24Let's go on
09:26When I met him he was increasingly isolated as a figure
09:33There was none of the kind of lawyers PR publicists that normally surrounds a major global superstar
09:41He was in control
09:43It was his idea that we film in the dance studio
09:49I knew I had to ask him certain questions that were going to be quite difficult
09:53But it was quite intimidating
09:54When you're dealing with someone like Michael Jackson
09:57You don't tell him what you're going to film
10:00But if we behaved appropriately and if he liked us
10:05Then things would happen
10:07Use your heels to slide back
10:11That is not easy
10:12That is not easy
10:15That's not easy
10:16That's very good though
10:17That's the idea
10:18You're a very kind man
10:20I bought these
10:22These
10:23Right?
10:24Have you got enough space for all of this?
10:26Yeah, I do
10:27You've got space?
10:28Yeah, and these we bought
10:29Okay
10:29Let's have a look at these ones
10:30They're beautiful
10:31Oh, that's only 275,000 each
10:36I was getting on well with him
10:39The filming had gone really well
10:41He seemed to have enjoyed it
10:42Yet I knew that for this section of the film
10:45I actually had to put all of that aside
10:50And behave as if I was confronting him for the first time
10:56I had to ask him about the allegations of child sexual abuse
11:00I was anxious about what was going to happen when I put these difficult questions to him
11:08But as we move towards the end of the filming
11:11He said, I want you to meet somebody
11:15So I said, right
11:17Who do you want me to meet?
11:18He said, he's a little boy
11:21And we've healed him of cancer
11:24Michael then gets up and goes out and brings the child in front of us
11:31I think what was going through his mind was
11:34Here's an example of a child that I've helped
11:37That's what I want you to put in your film
11:41And then, Michael volunteers during the conversation
11:46That they sleep in the bed together
11:49Why can't you share your bed?
11:52The most loving thing to do is to share your bed with someone
11:56You know?
11:57You really think that?
11:58Yeah, of course
12:01And we're just, all of us, the production team
12:05Are completely gobsmacked
12:07I mean, we can't believe what's going on in front of us
12:11But haven't you got a spare room or a spare house here where he could have stayed?
12:16Yeah, but, no, yes
12:17We have guest units
12:18But whenever kids come here, they always want to stay with me
12:21He'd actually made a disclosure on camera
12:24About something that had always been queried around him
12:27That people had always suspected there's something wrong about the way he interacts
12:31I realised that we had something that was hugely significant
12:35But I didn't realise the extent of the bombshell until the broadcast
12:45Michael Jackson's home, Neverland, is a 3,000 acre ranch
12:49Three hours north of Los Angeles
12:53He thought about it, and then he said, yes, come to Neverland
12:58What do you think people would say if I said, well, I've invited some of my daughter's friends round or
13:05my son's friends round and they're going to sleep in the bed with me tonight
13:07That's fine
13:08What do you think their parents would say?
13:09If they're wacky, they would say, you can't
13:12But when you say bed, you think it's sexual
13:16They make that sexual, it's not sexual
13:18But we're going to sleep
13:19I tuck them in
13:21I put a little, like, music on
13:23It's a little story time
13:25I read a book
13:26It's very sweet
13:27Put the fireplace on
13:28Give them hot milk
13:29You know, we have little cookies
13:30It's very charming
13:31Very sweet
13:32Sure
13:33I'm watching Michael on television
13:35And there's a moment, and if you knew him like I did, you can see him suddenly calculating in his
13:42head, this is terrible
13:43He finally said, okay, if you love me, you can sleep in the bed
13:47I was like, oh, man
13:50You can see it
13:52You can look at that moment in the Martin Bashir documentary
13:54And you can actually pin the end of his life, you know, to that very moment
14:06Did you happen to see that documentary on Michael Jackson? He says he was devastated by it
14:11Well, he talked about his plastic surgery and how he still invites little children to sleep in his bed
14:21Of course, I tuned in
14:22My husband and I were watching Wrapped
14:26And then I saw that boy sitting on the sofa next to him
14:30Holding Jackson's hand
14:33Putting his head on his shoulder
14:35Looking up at him dreamily
14:37And I looked at my husband and I said, uh-oh
14:41I thought, here we go again
14:42It drew me right back in
14:44To a story that I had done 10 years earlier
14:51The boy's name was Jordy Chandler
14:55It never came to trial
14:56Michael Jackson settled with the family
15:01For about 20 million dollars
15:03I suppose the problem for many people
15:07Is what happened in 1993
15:09Or what didn't happen
15:11What didn't happen?
15:13Nothing ever happened
15:14It was a mantra
15:16Nothing ever happened
15:18And I thought to myself
15:22Maybe it did
15:24The reason that's been given for why you didn't go to jail
15:28Was because you reached a financial settlement with the family
15:32Yeah, yeah
15:33I don't want to do a long drawn out thing on TV like OJ
15:37I want to go on with my life
15:39Here it was in my face again
15:41All those years later
15:42And I couldn't ignore it
15:45You can't ignore it
15:48I just remember watching the documentary
15:51With the Jackson family
15:53And they were shocked
15:57And Michael, he called his mom
15:59And her whole demeanor changed
16:02Like all she could say was
16:04They set him up, they set him up
16:07Devastated and utterly betrayed
16:08A gross distortion of the truth
16:10And a tawdry attempt to misrepresent his life and his abilities as a father
16:14That's the star's reaction to living with Michael Jackson
16:18People were thinking, oh, something's going on with Michael and this kid
16:21Because what we saw on TV
16:23But Michael was determined and ready to fight
16:27Ramon Bain is Michael Jackson's spokesperson
16:29Ms. Bain, good morning to you
16:31Good morning, how are you?
16:33Well, I've been very blessed
16:36Because I've worked with Muhammad Ali, Boyceman, Serena Williams
16:42And it was through Serena recommending me to Michael Jackson
16:47That I began working for Michael Jackson
16:50I thought that the Bashir documentary was outrageous
16:55It was a I gotcha kind of thing
16:58After that, Michael was guilty
17:01Until found innocent
17:04And I asked him point blank, looking dead in his face
17:07Did you do this?
17:09And I was convinced when he told me no
17:11Because had he told me yes
17:13Or had I thought that he was guilty of molesting children
17:16I wouldn't have represented him
17:19One of the things that I was concerned about
17:22It was just uncontrollable
17:25When you are bigger than life
17:28Which he was
17:29Nothing goes unreported
17:31And there were some during that time to make sure
17:36Everything was reported
17:38I got on the line to all my best sources within law enforcement
17:44To try to find out who this kid in the Bashir documentary was
17:47They said his name is Gavin, that's all I know
17:52Everyone is saying, who is the kid?
17:54It's a little bit like there's blood in the water and the sharks are hungry
17:58And we were some of those sharks
18:00We were circling
18:01We were circling Neverland to find that kid
18:03You've got to remember how many people are employed at Neverland
18:06You've got people shoveling giraffe shed
18:09You've got fairground workers
18:10There's so many sources there
18:12There's so many employees
18:14You know, we're paying a few
18:19It doesn't take long to get the name
18:23The boy's surname was Arvizo
18:26Gavin Arvizo
18:28The difficulty, of course, is you're dealing with a child
18:30So we're going after the family
18:32The dad, David Arvizo
18:34We found him
18:35The dad was ostracized from the family
18:37So you've got a financially needy family
18:40Whose heads could be turned by a large cheque
18:44But in the case of the Arvizos
18:46They weren't selling their story
18:48They never went for the money
18:50There was a story to be had
18:52We just couldn't get it
19:00A few years prior to the documentary
19:03I met the Arvizo family at the Laugh Factory
19:07And Gavin was a really funny, bright, sparkly kid
19:14They were living in what you would call a bachelor apartment
19:16It was one room
19:18They had mattresses on the floor
19:20They had sheets strung up for some privacy
19:25Janet was a good mom
19:27I found her to be childlike
19:29In her enthusiasm for everything
19:32And then one day
19:34I get a phone call from Janet
19:36And she's screaming, Gavin has cancer
19:41As soon as I could, I went down to the hospital
19:44He was at Kaiser in Hollywood
19:47They were going to try everything
19:48But the likelihood was that he would die
19:53I would visit him frequently at the hospital
19:57He lost all his hair
19:59He couldn't eat
20:01He was just rocking and moaning
20:04One day I walked into Gavin's room
20:07And there was a specially large gift basket
20:10It was the size of half the room
20:13I said, hey Gav, who sent you that?
20:17And he just said, Michael?
20:19And I said, Michael who?
20:22Michael Jackson?
20:24Okay, cool
20:26I just sort of accepted it
20:28Because we've all seen him visiting all of these sick children
20:32And needy children
20:36Children
20:37Children always hold a special place in Manhattan
20:41You just see a row of kids and Michael Jackson in the center
20:46Michael Jackson was a modern day Pied Piper to children
20:50He did tell me the children coming to Neverland lifted his spirits
20:56A few months later, Janet called me and told me that they had been to Neverland
21:00And she told me how wonderful Michael was
21:04And I thought that he was dying and why shouldn't he go enjoy Neverland
21:09But way later, when I watched the Martin Bashir documentary, my heart sank
21:15I just immediately thought the press is going to hound these people
21:18I did not want them in this whirlwind
21:22I called Janet
21:23I called Janet's mom
21:24And every number I called was disconnected
21:28Their phones being disconnected I found very alarming
21:32I didn't know their whereabouts
21:33I didn't know if they were safe
21:39I just had graduated college
21:41I was very excited to work in the entertainment industry
21:45And for Michael Jackson
21:47When I arrived in Los Angeles
21:49I walked into a very busy house
21:52Comparable to like walking into like a busy newsroom
21:56People running around, phones ringing off the hook
21:59The media agencies were calling non-stop
22:04So I walk into this damage control
22:06And then they said, you're going to take care of the Arvizo family
22:11The media wanted answers
22:14After the fallout of the Bashir special
22:16Michael graciously opened up his arms
22:18And allowed the Arvizos to come back to the ranch
22:21So they were weathering the storm at Neverland
22:28These photos are from the ranch
22:30I've kept them for the last 20 years
22:33This is Gavin's mother Janet Arvizo
22:36She writes
22:38Dearest loving Michael
22:39We appreciate you being our family
22:43What God brings together
22:45No man can undo
22:47We love you
22:52This is Star Arvizo, Gavin's brother
22:58I love you
22:59My daddy, Michael
23:01Your son, Blowhole
23:04These are the nicknames that Michael would give these
23:07These young boys
23:10There was individuals in the media
23:14Questioning Michael's relationship with children
23:17So the Jackson camp felt a need to hire a criminal defense attorney
23:21Mark Garagos
23:23To look over the legal aspects of this
23:27I had received a call from a gentleman who was representing Michael
23:35And he asked if I would meet Michael at Neverland
23:40The DNA of being a criminal defense lawyer is you're always thinking about the worst that can happen
23:46I realized that this is not just a reputation management issue
23:52This is potentially criminal exposure and that is a problem
23:58I saw that this was red meat for a prosecutor who was determined to take down Michael
24:08The Jackson associates decided to make a video
24:12Janet Arvizo and family was to be filmed
24:16Providing truthless statements regarding Michael Jackson and their relationship and more importantly Gavin's relationship with Michael Jackson
24:26Wait, wait, you know how these Bashir
24:29Hey, you know how Bashir zoomed in on him holding hands?
24:34Do that the same thing
24:35Because that's what a mother or a father does with a son
24:39And I feel that Janet in front of me while I was watching gave her side of the truth
24:46About her relationship with Michael Jackson that was not scripted
24:50When I would tell him the doctors are saying there's no chance Michael said I will not have that
24:57You bring them to me and we will coat him with love
25:01We may be broken
25:03Michael fixed us
25:04I physically watched and believed her responses to be true and nothing ever occurred untoward to them by Michael Jackson
25:12When I first met Michael all I thought was he was a loving, kind, humble man
25:17And all he wanted to do was good
25:20This video is an insurance policy
25:24Should the Arvizo family make an allegation against Michael
25:28If somebody's on the stand and they say something
25:30You could have a snippet ready on video and show a jury
25:35Well you said that then and this is now
25:37And then that forces the witness to have to explain themselves
25:42I believe Michael didn't trust this family
25:44So they had a private detective watching over the Arvizo family
25:50I received a phone call from Janet
25:52She was panicky and whispery
25:54And she was saying they're listening to everything I say
25:57I can't talk very long
26:00She really wanted to leave Neverland
26:02But she was being told we're trying to keep you safe
26:05You need to stay here
26:06But she just felt like something was off
26:09Janet called a good friend and said do you know of any lawyers?
26:13He recommended a lawyer who watched the Martin Bashir documentary
26:17And said these children need to speak to a psychologist
26:24The children particularly Gavin and Starr I think really loved Michael Jackson
26:28I think that he was very important at a time when there was chaos in their life
26:32Economic, medical
26:34And I think both Starr and Gavin looked to him for some stability
26:42It was very shocking to me when I learned about his experiences and his familiarity with Michael Jackson
26:49I felt like the boys were credible
26:52And I felt there was enough information for me to reasonably suspect Gavin had been the victim of child sexual
26:59abuse
27:00And in the state of California, health professionals in general, if you have a reasonable suspicion
27:06You must under penalty of law make a report to the appropriate authorities
27:13At the time I was prosecuting predominantly sex crimes
27:17I was one of the few men who actually did that
27:20And did a lot of them
27:21Rape cases, child molest cases, crimes against women, crimes against children
27:26That became one of my specialties
27:29And I got a call from the district attorney
27:32And I went down to his office and he handed me a report
27:35And it took a moment before I finally saw the name Michael Jackson
27:39The most recognizable person in the world
27:44But to find out, is there a credible accusation of sexual abuse
27:48Almost always the first thing detectives do is interview the child
27:55Okay, we're rolling
27:57You need to sit right there, buddy
28:04How long is it gonna take?
28:05Well, as long as how, uh, how fast you answer our questions
28:08And how you feel and all that stuff
28:13Hey, he grabbed you
28:18Yeah
28:18He grabbed you
28:19Yeah
28:20Where did he grab you at?
28:22Private area
28:23He grabbed you in your private area?
28:26Were you in, where were you at when this happened?
28:28On the bed
28:29In, in bed?
28:30Were you lying in bed or were you sitting on the bed?
28:34I was lying in bed, we were dusting
28:36And, did you have clothes on or off?
28:39On?
28:40Yeah, it was a challenge
28:41Okay
28:43And what did he end up doing?
28:47He told me
28:51Cause he said
28:53That if I knew how to do it, he said
28:56That
28:57If I
28:58You do it for me
29:01So, you know
29:01You start
29:02Speak up just a little bit, I can't hear you, but
29:05I know it's hard
29:06You can expect to see a child who's
29:08Talking about a subject matter that's difficult to talk about
29:12Life is so much easier if you just say
29:14Nothing happened
29:15And the questions stop
29:18You watch kids, they just sit there and implode
29:21Not explode, implode
29:23They sort of shrink into themselves
29:25Their shoulders come in, their head drops down
29:28It's as if they're trying to disappear into the floor
29:31And what did he do next?
29:33He started, he started masturbating
29:36Okay
29:38Yeah
29:40I told him, I didn't want to do that
29:43Did he stop?
29:44I told him, I
29:45He kept on doing it
29:47I told him, you see what I'm saying?
29:50He wants to teach me
29:53I told him, I
29:54I told him, I don't know
29:57At some point after the release of the Martin Bashir documentary
30:01Michael Jackson had sexually abused Gavin
30:03That's what Gavin told us and we believed him
30:06What I saw, I thought was a very typical interview of a child who had experienced sexual abuse
30:12Was there anything else where you had seen naked pictures or naked women before?
30:16While being with Michael?
30:18Yeah
30:19What was that at?
30:20He had a black suitcase
30:23He said, and there's a black suitcase and it's full like, like naked pictures of magazines of women
30:30Of women?
30:31Did you see him?
30:34He showed them to me
30:35I really am very proud of you, Gavin
30:39I'm very proud of you
30:41I learned that both Star and Gavin had been shown pornography
30:45Star told me that he had seen Michael put alcohol into soda cans
30:52Called it Jesus juice
30:54Gavin told me that he had Jesus juice on planes
30:57Gavin told me he had Jesus juice in Michael Jackson's room
31:02When you're prosecuting a case involving a crime against a child
31:06You rarely have witnesses to it
31:08So we want to see if we can corroborate what Gavin had told us
31:13About what was going on in Neverland with Michael Jackson
31:16And that included executing a search warrant on his property
31:25This is a Fox News alert
31:27A search warrant has been issued and executed by the Santa Barbara County Police
31:34Dozens of investigators are swarming Michael Jackson's ranch in California
31:38Looking for evidence in what is being called an ongoing criminal investigation
31:45What's all this shit down here?
31:47That's a filming crew
31:47That's a filmmaking crew
31:49Yeah
31:49Damn it
31:50They're taking pictures
32:06Okay, well, let's do our checks
32:07We don't have a job until we secure this house
32:11We think that we have a good chance of being able to get a conviction on this case
32:17Then we should do it
32:19We shouldn't not do it because he's a celebrity
32:23Search warrant
32:27Right now Target Neverland is underway
32:29As many as 60 investigators are inside at this point searching the ranch
32:34To my left you'll see the mass of media from all over the world that's gathered here
32:38It goes down about a quarter mile
32:39We had a very realistic understanding of what was going to happen
32:44The constant presence of the press
32:47It never crossed our mind that that would be a reason that we wouldn't prosecute Michael Jackson
32:51We knew what it would mean nationally and even internationally
32:56Those investigators are still on the scene
32:58Somebody very close to this investigation says it does involve child molestation
33:06I was at home
33:08All of a sudden there's a news flash
33:10It was a raid at Neverland
33:12I almost dropped to the floor
33:14I knew inherently that this was the Arvizo family
33:19How could they accuse Michael of molesting their child?
33:22I wholeheartedly believed in his innocence
33:26I felt that it just didn't make logical sense
33:30That Michael would harm a child
33:34After the deposition and the family speaking so positively of him
33:52We want to see if we can corroborate what Gavin had told us
33:56Where the stairway is
33:57Go ahead
34:01Sheriff's apartment
34:01Do you have another light to turn on Jeff?
34:05Where the bed is
34:08I knew that in Jackson's interview in the documentary by Martin Bashir
34:12He was saying these kids they want to stay in my bed
34:17When you say bed
34:19You think it's sexual
34:20They make that sexual, it's not sexual
34:23We're going to sleep
34:24I tuck them in, I put a little like music on
34:28A little storytelling, I read a book
34:30Give them hot milk
34:31You know, we have cookies
34:33It's very charming
34:34Very sweet
34:36We want to see if there was the briefcase that Gavin said existed in the bedroom that had all of
34:41the pornography in it
34:46Yes, we found the briefcase
34:48Yes, it was the same color
34:49Yes, it had pornography in it
35:06I stood outside Neverland for hours and hours and hours that day, watching whether or not they're going to bring
35:12Michael Jackson out
35:13He's not there
35:15The sheriff's office, all they have said is that this is a property search and ongoing investigation
35:21And tomorrow morning at about 11 o'clock, we'll have a news conference with both the DA and the sheriff
35:27Okay, we're 30 seconds
35:32The basis for this investigation regarding Mr. Jackson involves allegations of child molestation 288A of the California Penal Code
35:42Additionally, an arrest warrant for Mr. Jackson has been issued on multiple counts of child molestation
35:49For years, pop star Michael Jackson has denied having inappropriate contact with children
35:55And he has never been charged
35:57But tonight, Jackson is wanted by police
36:00Jackson would be a flight risk?
36:01Could he be a flight risk?
36:04There's always that potential, but we are actively pursuing the arrest warrant
36:08Do you know where he is right now?
36:10No, we do not
36:11Ask Diane, she knows everything about Michael Jackson
36:13I already had this history, this knowledge, this source base
36:18And they were calling me these sources as often as I was calling them
36:23Every hour, I was finding out more and more things
36:25And I get some real hard facts
36:28I came to discover that Michael Jackson was not at Neverland
36:33But somewhere in Las Vegas
36:38The 45-year-old's whereabouts are a mystery
36:41Some say he's been at the Four Seasons
36:43Others say up the strip, at the Mirage
36:46Where he reportedly owns a villa
36:47And still others say, no, he last stayed here, at the Bellagio
36:51Fact is, it seems nobody in this town knows where Michael Jackson last stayed
36:55Let alone where he is tonight
36:57We're outside Neverland, we're in Vegas
37:00We've got people stationed everywhere
37:01And it's a bit embarrassing that, actually, we don't know where he is right now
37:06Those of us who know Michael, we think, well, I think the world of him
37:11And I just cannot fathom that this would be true
37:13At the time, Michael wasn't talking to nobody
37:17He was hoping that the Fuhrer would go away
37:20Mrs. Jackson had a theory about life
37:22If you ducked and covered enough, the storm would pass you by
37:26And Michael practiced that very carefully
37:31I find out from a source, he's holed up in this villa and he only opens the door
37:37Wearing a colorful, dashiki, muumuu garment
37:41Only enough to get the food brought in, and then he slams the door
37:44And he's having wild parties
37:47There were cigarette burns in the leather couches and chairs
37:51There were food containers everywhere
37:53There were empty liquor bottles on every table
37:57And this is where Michael Jackson had been for several days
38:01Entertaining young teenage boys
38:03Who all spoke German
38:06And he said, after the raid, Michael Jackson was informed
38:11Oh my God, the cops are at Neverland again
38:13And he left just like that
38:20Michael Jackson remains a wanted man this morning
38:23And everyone's waiting to see when he'll turn himself in
38:27Jackson's spokesman says the singer will return to Santa Barbara
38:30To confront and prove that the charges are unfounded
38:34We have to go
38:34The next thing I hear, Michael Jackson negotiates
38:38With the district attorney's office as to the surrender
38:48We were hearing that this aircraft may be connected with Michael Jackson's arrival
38:53He is rolling out right now on runway 7
39:01He flew in in a private jet into a hangar in Santa Barbara
39:06And my sources were telling me
39:09He voluntarily flew there to surrender
39:15They put the handcuffs on him and put him in a car
39:18That car was also outfitted with audio
39:23Okay
39:24Put the mirror on, please
39:26Okay, is that okay for you, Mr. Jackson?
39:28It's wonderful, thank you
39:29Thank you very much
39:31They did not want any false reports of police brutality
39:41Coming in the back
39:42Back
39:46He's coming in
39:49The car is starting to pull into the Sallyport area
39:57He's coming in the back
39:57He's turned tight, huh?
39:59Just, uh, if you want to scoot forward a little bit
40:01There you go
40:03All right, somebody's coming out of the vehicle now
40:05He appears to be
40:05There he is, Michael Jackson
40:09He's in handcuffs
40:10I believe he's in handcuffs
40:11Mike, he's in handcuffs
40:13Yes
40:13So after that 24-hour mystery about his whereabouts
40:17Michael Jackson has now surrendered into police custody behind me
40:21A crushing humiliation for one of the world's great entertainers
40:25Right now, being read those charges of child molestation
40:29Minutes are ticking by
40:31I'm still live on the air
40:32I'm thinking, is he going to be booked?
40:35Fingerprinted? Mugshot?
40:36What happens next?
40:39And then it popped up in my monitor
40:43And I was stunned
40:45I'm live on the air, so I have to be careful what I say
40:48I thought, number one, he looks so pale
40:52It looked ghoulish
40:54It looked like a deer in the headlights
40:56I almost felt sorry for him
40:59When I saw him with his hands cuffed
41:02And then that mugshot
41:03I realized, this is not just at the allegation stage anymore
41:07Michael Jackson is now in the American criminal justice system
41:11He's in the system
41:13And the system was not going to let him go
41:16And my sources were telling me there was going to be a criminal trial
41:22Seven counts of lewd and lascivious acts against a child
41:25With the intent of arousing, appealing to and gratifying the lust, passions and sexual desires of Jackson and the child
41:32And two counts of administering an intoxicating agent, reportedly alcohol, with the intent of committing child molestation
41:40He's come back specifically to confront these charges head on
41:45He is greatly outraged by the bringing of these charges
41:50He considers this to be a big lie
41:53He was enormously stressed
41:56All of a sudden, there is a reality to what has been theoretical
42:04I watched him just disintegrate, literally disintegrate
42:11The ingestion of substances was just astronomical
42:17There was a time when I actually saw him in the fetal position on the floor
42:21And I thought, what do we do?
42:24I mean, you don't want his death to be on your hands
42:28Because you took some inaction
42:33It was a horrific time for him and for those around him
42:39And we had genuine concerns as to whether he could even withstand the trial
42:44Physically, mentally
42:48Michael is hearing all of these heinous accusations on a day-to-day basis
42:53And he's wanting people to step up and say that's not true
42:58And to defend him more
43:00We know our son
43:01We know that he's not a pedophile like some of these newscasters are saying
43:06This is ridiculous
43:07We have a lot of wicked people out there
43:10And they know what they're doing
43:13Michael is saying, what is this obsession with me?
43:17Why am I a target?
43:19It seemed to me that there was a deliberate attempt to try to get him
43:25It is racism
43:26It is, Catherine's not going to say it, but I will say it
43:30It is racism
43:32When the charges were announced against Michael
43:34Of course, the family, they were heart sick
43:37But for Michael's siblings, it was never about guilt or innocence for them
43:41It was about legacy
43:43They can't do this to us
43:45They want to destroy what we built
43:47It's what I kept hearing over and over again
43:50We are the Jacksons
43:51As Randy Jackson would say
43:53You know, we are royalty
43:54We're the black Kennedys
43:57My mother, my father, my sisters, my brothers are overwhelmed
44:01At the outpouring of the support from the fans
44:05Both here in the United States and all around the world
44:08It was all about the brand
44:10Michael Jackson, the brand
44:12The Jacksons, the brand
44:14We got to protect the brand
44:17Thank you very much
44:19That's all I got to say
44:20I remember Jermaine calling me up
44:22And says, guess what, you know
44:24Michael says when the trial is over
44:26We're going to go on tour again
44:27And I got to realize that that's what this was really about
44:31For at least for Jermaine
44:34We got to support him because he got to come through this
44:37He's got to beat these charges so they can make more music and go out on tour
44:41He's innocent and he knows that, we know that, and the public knows that too
44:46He's innocent
44:47Our response is, here we go again
44:50Michael has 24 hour a day supervision with him for the specific purpose of protecting him against these kinds of
44:57claims
44:57Did he want to have children around him?
45:00Yes, he did
45:02No question about it
45:04But to groom children for molestation?
45:08What, he was the wicked witch in Hansel and Gretel?
45:10How nonsensical
45:12Michael Jackson was the biggest superstar in the history of the country and the world
45:19Adults would get into Michael's presence and they were all at Twitter and it was impossible for him to function
45:26But with children, they didn't care
45:28He was just one of the guys
45:31And that's why he liked being with children
45:37I remember on the day of the arraignment, I'd never seen anything like it
45:44Michael Jackson presents himself in court and the formal charges are read against him
45:51I knew we were watching the potential demise of a superstar
45:59He knows there are two parallel battles underway
46:03There is the legal battle underway inside that courtroom
46:06And then there is the public relations scourge that is also underway
46:12Michael had an entire army with him
46:15There was a huge crowd there
46:17View stations, take this garbage and then report it as fact
46:21You should be ashamed of yourselves
46:25I believe he's 100% innocent
46:28And I don't think he would ever do something like this
46:30He doesn't have the heart to do it
46:31We believe in his innocence and we're supporting him all the way
46:35And we're thinking about him every minute
46:36And we're gonna be here for him
46:38What do we want just that?
46:40What do we want now?
46:42What do we want now?
46:43I'll never forget Bob Jones, Michael's long-time manager and I
46:46Were standing next to Michael
46:48And Bob had his back to him
46:52And he says, I know he's gonna do something crazy
46:55I just know he's gonna do something crazy
46:58Oh my goodness, look at this
47:00He's jumping on top of the car
47:01He is truly performing for his band
47:06Look at this
47:07I remember looking up, kind of gobsmacked
47:10And I thought he was gonna start moonwalking
47:14I was immensely impressed with the physicality of hopping onto the top of an SUV
47:22In the state or condition he was in
47:24He's one of the greatest performers of the century
47:28He can turn it on
47:30He said, Ryan, how do guilty people leave court?
47:36I said, they kind of are embarrassed and they hide
47:38He says, yeah, they put their jacket over their head and they hide
47:43How do innocent people leave the courthouse?
47:48They let the whole world see them
47:51They stand tall and they stand proud
47:59In his own inimical way, Michael Jackson knew how to tell the world he was innocent
48:13I would not be surprised if somewhere down the road
48:17Some of the people surrounding Michael Jackson might have at least the threat of charges against them
48:23Aiding, abetting, allowing children in, knowing full well what the heck might happen
48:30Hey Vincent, Sergeant, we're going in
48:32I just want to hear from you whether you want to speak to me with your attorney or not
48:35Giving you the opportunity, bud, because the ship is sinking pretty fast
48:40So please, Vince, give me a buzz
48:43You know, we knew that Vinny was one of the people who was at Neverland
48:47And had an association with the kids when they were there
48:50So we were interested in talking to Vinny to see if he could help us in any way
48:54In terms of what was going on with the kids
48:57I defended him
48:59And I wholeheartedly believed in his innocence
49:01One of the reasons was because of my friend Frank
49:05Michael was like a father to Frank
49:08Frank was a young child when he met Michael
49:11And he grew in the ranks and he became his personal assistant
49:15Basically anything Michael wanted, you would have to do
49:19Frank Tyson is thought to be one of Jackson's closest friends
49:22They met when Tyson was just five years old
49:25And he's admittedly slept in Jackson's bed
49:29I said, Frank, you're the closest person to Michael
49:31I said, is this true?
49:35He never gave me an indication that he is interested in boys
49:39Or sexual attraction to boys, it's the complete opposite
49:42He told me no, Michael would never do this with a child
49:45I know Michael all my life
49:48He would never do this
49:50And I trusted Frank
49:52But they were raiding other Jackson associates' houses and properties
49:58Frank cleaned out his house
50:00Of anything that came from the Neverland Ranch
50:03And he hands me a Nike bag
50:05I took the bag
50:07And I'm driving home and I felt something was a little suspicious
50:10And I said, you know, let me take a look in this bag
50:15I start taking videos
50:17To document this
50:27I open the bag, I start looking and I see a magazine
50:40I start flipping through it
50:42And there was a Sharpie
50:48Circles around the video ordering section
50:52Someone's wanted these videos
50:55Circled the ones they want
50:57These videos, which are children that are naked
51:01Some with families, some just naked children
51:06I confronted Frank
51:07I said, you know, Frank, what is this
51:10This magazine?
51:11I said, because, you know, there's circles around video with naked children
51:15He says, that's just a phase that Michael and I went through
51:18You know, he circled the videos that he wanted
51:20I ordered them and it was a phase that we went through
51:22They watched them together
51:25When I heard that I was in disbelief
51:29I was very upset
51:32My inclination was
51:34After finding this
51:35And sitting there thinking about it
51:38Was that Frank is so close to Michael
51:41That he's covering up for him
51:45That was a defining moment for me
51:49That was the moment that hit me so hard
51:53Where I realized that there's something going on here
51:59In the last few weeks, a large amount of ugly, malicious information has been released into the media about me
52:04I allowed a family to visit and spend some time at Neverland
52:09Through the years, I have helped thousands of children who were ill or in distress
52:15Please keep an open mind and let me have my day in court
52:18Thank you
52:47Thank you
52:47Thank you
53:34Thank you
54:02Thank you
54:32Thank you
55:02Thank you
55:32Thank you
