Shed and Buried - Season 8 Episode 1
Transcript
00:05There's a very difficult sticker to remove. I've had a little pick at that and that's tenacious as well.
00:10I might call my third-born tenacious.
00:13Why don't you get a dog called tenacious?
00:15Well, it wouldn't fit, would it? Jelly Bean, Jelly Tot. Where is Bean?
00:19Bean's over there eating horse manure.
00:21Bean! Stop it!
00:23Dirty!
00:25Cutter!
00:25We're back for a new series of Shed and Berries.
00:29That's fantastic!
00:31Fantabulous!
00:32Unbelievable!
00:34Scouring Britain's sheds.
00:36Ooh, now look at this.
00:38For automotive treasure.
00:40We're gonna buy stuff, restore it and sell it for a tidy profit.
00:46Every penny counts.
00:47Welcome to Shed and Berries.
00:53We're heading south in search of a bargain.
00:59We're going to see if I'm not very much mistaken.
01:02Steve in Bristol!
01:03Steve in Bristol!
01:05Steve in Bristol!
01:06Steve in Bristol!
01:07Steve in Bristol!
01:07Steve in Bristol!
01:08Steve in Bristol!
01:08Steve in Bristol!
01:09Yeah, yeah.
01:09What's he got?
01:10Right, well he's got a selection of very fine things.
01:14He has cars, he has motorcycles, he has a little bit of a penchant for micro-cars.
01:22What?
01:23Micro-cars?
01:23Micro-cars?
01:24What do you mean?
01:24You know, bubble cars, you know.
01:26Zetas, that kind of stuff.
01:27Yeah, and all that.
01:28Little rare, tiny cars from the 50s and 60s.
01:31Oh yeah, I've got that.
01:32I think he is an all-round collector.
01:35I think we can expect all kinds of stuff.
01:38I am going to prove to you today that money is never a problem.
01:45Okay.
01:46Yeah.
01:47We can spend what we like.
01:48Does that mean that we can stop off at that well-known bakery chain and get some sausage
01:53rolls?
01:54No.
01:55If you behave yourself, you might be allowed a sausage roll on the way home.
01:58Oh okay, well I will be very good then.
02:01But we're sharing one.
02:06Whether we return with a pile of crumbs or a pile of rust, who knows?
02:11But Steve in Bristol, here we come.
02:16Tell me about it then, Steve.
02:18I mean, you and Cameron collect stuff?
02:20Yeah, yeah, we collect a bit of anything.
02:22Motorbikes, cars, signage.
02:23Oh, there we are.
02:25A bit of everything.
02:26Automotive memorabilia.
02:27Okay, Cameron, so look.
02:28Come on, you collect stuff.
02:29No?
02:30It's his Willie's Jeep, look.
02:31That's his Jeep.
02:32Isn't it?
02:33Well, I haven't seen that yet.
02:34Yeah, yeah, that's his Jeep.
02:35Is he your grandson?
02:36Yes, he's my grandson.
02:37Oh, okay, right.
02:38Apart from the Willie's Jeep, is everything that we're going to see for sale?
02:42It is a prices rate anything for sale.
02:44Oh, okay.
02:45Yeah.
02:46Hey, look.
02:46Well, I'll tell you what we're going to do.
02:47We're going to have a little rummage about.
02:49Right, might call you in if we need any info.
02:51Yeah.
02:52And then, hopefully, we'll have a deal at the end.
02:56Yeah?
02:56That'd be nice.
02:56So, look.
02:57Should we get in there, then?
02:58Come on.
02:58All right.
02:59Boys, we'll see you later.
03:00See you later.
03:00See you later.
03:01All right.
03:02Come on then, Fuzzer.
03:05Oh, my word.
03:08Get some light on the subject, mate.
03:11What's that thing?
03:12Now, that is a training model.
03:15I think it was in Germany.
03:17You had to, as part of your driving test and part of your tuition, you had to know how the
03:24car worked.
03:25Right.
03:25You'd be able to know, you know, what the likelihood of whatever's gone wrong is.
03:30Yeah.
03:30It's like the highway code now, like, you know.
03:32How cool is that?
03:33It's super cool.
03:35I think that is a lovely, lovely thing.
03:37It is a lovely thing.
03:39Now, look.
03:39Out of our price range, but what a beautiful Messerschmitt.
03:43Released in 1953, the Messerschmitt bubble car is one of the most iconic vehicles of the post-war
03:50era.
03:51From the same company who built the famous fighter planes, it was a big success in Germany
03:56and sold fairly well in Britain, too.
04:00How many can you get in there?
04:01Three?
04:01Three.
04:02Well, it depends upon the size.
04:04Yeah, all right.
04:04Okay.
04:05You and me at two.
04:06That's right.
04:07It would be interesting to find out from Steve how much you would want for that if it
04:10is for sale.
04:11Beautiful thing.
04:12Okay.
04:12So, look.
04:14There's Cameron's Willis.
04:15Yeah.
04:16Nice, man.
04:19They'll never sell the Jeep, but Steve's next shed is a temple of rust with a phalanx
04:24of motorbikes.
04:26Oh, my God.
04:27This is great.
04:28Oh, look at that.
04:29All ripe for restoration.
04:31I like this.
04:33Ranging from KTM's.
04:35Oh, hold on.
04:37Yeah, there's something loose in there.
04:39To rarities like this Flandria.
04:41It's devoid of engine.
04:43And this rusty but riotous Honda SS50.
04:48Yeah, Steve.
04:49Here, come on in, mate.
04:51Now, look.
04:52SS50.
04:53Iconic.
04:53Where did that come from?
04:54I bought it all too, Jimbo.
04:56Did you?
04:57A long time ago?
04:58No, a few weeks ago.
05:00Oh, really?
05:00Really, really.
05:01Okay.
05:01Bath and West.
05:02There's a lot of holes in it.
05:03So, what are you going to do with it?
05:05Yeah.
05:05So, yeah, I probably will restore it.
05:07Fantastic.
05:08Now, what about the KTM here as well?
05:10I haven't seen one of them.
05:11It needs a piston.
05:12Ah.
05:13That will be the tinkle.
05:15That's the noise of that.
05:16It needs a piston in it.
05:17And these are all projects behind.
05:19Yes.
05:20What is that?
05:20What's the car here?
05:22That is a 1920s, like, Dodgem car, if you like.
05:27How is it?
05:28It's ran off of a Stewart pump engine, which is here.
05:31Look.
05:31This one here.
05:32So, it's a petrol engine Dodgem.
05:35Yeah.
05:35And the brake was on the outside.
05:37So, whoever was doing the ride would jump on the side and put the brake on.
05:40So, the tough lads who got the job at the fair at the weekend at the carnival.
05:45So, they had to just sort of like stand on there and just.
05:47And put the brake on.
05:48Put the brake on for you.
05:49Yeah.
05:50You never know.
05:50Well, mate.
05:50Thanks so much.
05:51Well, look.
05:52Excellent, mate.
05:52See you later.
05:53Okay, mate.
05:53Fabulous.
05:57Right.
05:57Come on then.
05:58Next one.
05:59Oh, now look at this.
06:02Hang on a second.
06:03Geez.
06:03What's that?
06:04That is an Opel GT.
06:09Originally a concept car for the 1965 Frankfurt Motor Show.
06:14The Opel GT was a bog standard Opel Cadet chassis with funky bodywork and a souped up engine.
06:22It's a very rare car today.
06:24This is when suddenly cars went from being a little bit sort of stodgy to everybody was turning them into
06:33almost like Hot Wheels cars.
06:34Mate, this looks like just like a Hot Wheels car.
06:37It does, doesn't it?
06:38How cool is that?
06:39Yeah.
06:39I mean, obviously a lot of work to do on it.
06:40A lot of work and probably slightly out of our range.
06:46Yeah, that would be.
06:47Oh, I tell you what, there's some trinketry there.
06:48A nice sign.
06:49I like the sign.
06:50Yeah.
06:51I like those boards of fuses.
06:54And look, there's more than one there.
06:57And another little training item.
06:59Look, can you see the coil and distributor and spark plug?
07:02See, that is a lovely thing as well.
07:04I do like that.
07:07Though we could stretch to the trinkets, the Opal's out of our price range.
07:12But there is one more shed.
07:15Hey, look, now we're talking, mate.
07:17Yes.
07:17Aren't we?
07:18Let's have a little look at these Yamaha 500s double overhead cam.
07:23I rather like these, mate.
07:25I've done a lot of miles.
07:26I used to have one.
07:27Well, that one's done 19,000.
07:28This one's done 15,000.
07:31That's the stated mileage.
07:33I really like that brown one.
07:34Yeah.
07:35That's the baby, I think.
07:37Yeah.
07:37You know, that's definitely an emerging classic, if you see what I mean.
07:40I think so as well.
07:41Okay, look.
07:42Right, what have we got?
07:43We've got that.
07:45Yes.
07:45SO sign.
07:47Oh, what, in the other shed?
07:48Yeah.
07:48Yeah, we could have that away.
07:49Yeah.
07:50Oh, there was that training module car thing.
07:53I'm not mad on that.
07:54No.
07:54You're more mad on that.
07:55The rack of fuses, you know.
07:57Is there anything else?
07:59Oh, there's that SO lubrication service sign.
08:02That is very nice, actually.
08:04Yes, very nice.
08:05Well look, should we go and try and do a deal?
08:07I think so.
08:08Come on then.
08:09There you go.
08:10Yeah, thanks mate.
08:16Okay, so I'm going to go right back to the first shed.
08:20I'm going to ask you about that car, that skeletal car training.
08:24Oh dear, it's pleasing.
08:25Yeah.
08:25Yeah.
08:26So is that for sale?
08:27Yes.
08:27How much is that?
08:28$1,500.
08:29Tell me about the Messerschmitt.
08:31How much is that?
08:32$18,000.
08:33I thought it would be about that.
08:35Okay, just in here, just in the garage that's opposite us, there is an SO sign.
08:41SO sign?
08:42Yeah.
08:42If I took it off, you wouldn't notice.
08:44Yeah, a red SO sign.
08:46Sort of.
08:46Double-sided?
08:47Oh yeah, double-sided.
08:49Yeah, yeah.
08:49How much would that be?
08:50That'd be $300.
08:51Oh, okay.
08:52Alright, alright.
08:53There's some cardboard boards with fuses on.
08:56Oh, £5.
08:58Is it?
08:58Okay.
09:00Can I take two?
09:01You can.
09:02There we go.
09:03There was also a little, another training thing.
09:07There was a distributor.
09:09Oh, the Spark.
09:10Yeah, yeah.
09:11£60.
09:13Yeah.
09:14Hang on a second.
09:15You're buying all this for yourself.
09:17Not necessarily.
09:18But you are.
09:19No, not necessarily.
09:19You can tell in your eyes.
09:20Not necessarily.
09:21I've been with you for too many years.
09:23Not necessarily.
09:23You're just coming across me and shaking.
09:25We can get it.
09:25Just cleaning him out.
09:26Would you like it?
09:28Shake his head.
09:28No, no, no, no, no.
09:29Now, talking about stuff I want.
09:31Yeah.
09:31There is some Yamaha double overhead cam 500s in there.
09:36Yeah.
09:36Do they all run that?
09:37They both run.
09:38I think the carbs won't clean in them.
09:40But they all miss and pop and go in.
09:42But yes, they do run okay.
09:43Okay.
09:43And they both got V5s.
09:45Oh, okay, great.
09:46The one on the left here with a sort of slightly black tank.
09:49Yeah, that runs.
09:50How much is that?
09:51Uh, 1500.
09:52And the brown one?
09:531500.
09:55Okay.
09:58So, I'm just having to think here.
10:00What about the brown Yamaha and that 300 quid SO sign?
10:08Yeah?
10:10Mm.
10:111650.
10:1317.
10:1317.
10:28We're down in Bristol with Steve and his grandson Cameron.
10:32We've offered 1650 quid for a Yamaha bike and some trinkets.
10:36But will he go for it?
10:40I've got an idea.
10:41Go on then.
10:4217 if you throw in the illuminated SO sign.
10:471750.
10:50Nice one, mate.
10:51Great.
10:52And Cameron, look fantastico.
10:54Yeah.
10:54Good lad.
10:55All right.
10:57Next day, back at the ranch, we reveal all.
11:05I think Fuzz and I have done rather well.
11:08Hang on.
11:08What year is this?
11:1072?
11:1172.
11:1172 is the right era for bikes.
11:13That's good, isn't it?
11:13Any era's a good era.
11:15What's good about this, it's never imported to the UK originally.
11:18Yeah.
11:18We never had this model.
11:19We had the two-valve version.
11:20Yeah.
11:20All the way from Wisconsin.
11:22I would love to polish this up, get it going.
11:24I think it's a nice little...
11:25It is.
11:26It's good.
11:26Most importantly, all the chrome's in good condition.
11:28Yeah, it is.
11:28The other thing that's great about this is it's absolutely original.
11:32All the lights, all the indicators, the clocks, it's not been messed with.
11:36Just the grips.
11:37Which is a big bonus for a bike this age.
11:39Just the grips.
11:40They always change the grips.
11:41I love those bottle grips.
11:42Yes, but I don't like the fact that I've got small hands.
11:44Two pounds.
11:45I know you have, mate.
11:45You've got small sensors.
11:47I have trouble reaching the levers.
11:48I know.
11:48I like a spongy grip.
11:49Yeah, all right.
11:50Okay, now look, it's quite enough.
11:51Let's move on to this other table where there is lots of delicacies.
11:56And doesn't it all look lovely?
11:58Our two SO signs and fuzzies are bric-a-brac.
12:04So are we allowed to use these fuses or has it got to stay complete?
12:08Use Henry's one.
12:09Have I got one?
12:10He's got a short fuse.
12:12I'm giving you one as a present.
12:14All right.
12:15Thanks, mate.
12:16All right.
12:16This was, would you believe, 60 quid.
12:19Steve reckoned that it was a repro.
12:22I actually think it's not very old, but it's a real one because it's so heavy.
12:28It's got a transformer.
12:29A heavy transformer.
12:31So all in all, we'll spark that up, see if it works, clean that down, hang one of those
12:35up and get that going.
12:40Next day, we start on the Yamaha.
12:43It looks in good shape, but before we try to start it up, we've got to get rid of the
12:47old fuel from the tank and the car.
12:53There we go.
12:56Dribbling there quite severely, not in the sump drainer.
13:00Well, they all do that, madam, if it's not in line.
13:03Oh, right.
13:04And next, we're going to drain the tank.
13:08Yes.
13:08There we go.
13:09That's off.
13:10So that's good.
13:11Oh, look at that now.
13:14Out comes the old stuff.
13:17And in goes the new stuff.
13:20I'm really excited about this.
13:22Well, it's more than I thought.
13:24Yeah, yeah, that'll do.
13:25It's your money, so I'm going to keep going.
13:27Don't be like that.
13:30All right.
13:31Right, choke.
13:32Yeah.
13:32It's down, which is unusual.
13:35Oh, right.
13:35Okay.
13:36Just let it settle for a minute.
13:37All right.
13:38Let's get this out from underneath.
13:40Right.
13:40The choke is on.
13:41Shall we do it?
13:42Yeah, go on.
13:42You can have the honour.
13:44Really?
13:44Yeah, go on.
13:47Mate, that exactly wasn't that difficult, was it?
13:50Mate, that sounds great.
13:53Your rev counter works.
13:54Yeah.
13:54You've got a neutral light.
13:56Yeah, yeah.
13:57Your oil light's gone out.
13:58Indicators.
13:59Yes.
14:00Yes.
14:01Corn.
14:03Everything works.
14:04Just take it down the driving back.
14:06Yeah.
14:11Arriba, arriba.
14:17Back in the day when I was a nipper, I was always skids pillion.
14:22Now we can take it easy.
14:24What do you think?
14:26Second gear.
14:26It's beautiful there.
14:27Isn't it lovely?
14:29Up through the gears, the gear?
14:30Smooth as silk.
14:32Gearbox nicely.
14:33It's beautiful.
14:34It's beautiful.
14:37This might be my drive, rather than the I-39 in Wisconsin.
14:42But doesn't the Yamaha run nicely?
14:47Mate, you said they're quite, you know, docile.
14:50Yeah.
14:51But look, hold on.
14:52Oh.
14:53I've got a lot to hang on to.
14:55Yeah, shut up.
14:58Look, you know, that's plenty fast enough for us old men.
15:02Yeah.
15:04I think we can safely say that it's the right touch.
15:07Yeah, absolutely.
15:09All right, well, we'd better get cleaning up the other stuff.
15:12Yep.
15:16So, without more ado, I take a sponge and some soapy stuff to the SO sign.
15:24You see, that's lovely, isn't it?
15:26Lovely thing.
15:28And skid goes in a bit harder with a metal brush on the Yamaha's exhaust pipe.
15:35There are a couple of annoying price tags on the double-sided sign,
15:39but a heat gun and a scraper will put paid to them.
15:43Look at that.
15:45I thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.
15:47I'd just like to thank my mother, my wife, my two dogs.
15:50That is a revelation skid.
15:53Oh, look, there's another one.
15:56Double-siders go for good money at auto jumbles,
15:59so it's definitely worth the effort.
16:05There's something just very therapeutic about having a good wash-down of a sign.
16:12Are you saying working with me is very therapeutic?
16:15No, I said it's very therapeutic working with this sign on me own.
16:20You know, I love things showing their age, you know?
16:24That's a good job.
16:25Look at him.
16:26All I can see is an orange hat talking at me.
16:31As for the chrome work, it's not perfect, but with a bit of spit and polish, it's eminently salvageable.
16:40I mean, that's the joy of ownership, really, innit?
16:42Yeah, you'd get this up and on the road.
16:44This is better than an oily rag restoration.
16:46Yeah.
16:47So, this rides beautifully, and then you just do this, you know, Friday night, pouring the rain, get in the
16:53shed, do another pass on this, do another one on those.
16:56Yeah, right.
16:56And then when you've owned it for six months, it'll look lovely.
17:02Turning to the dents.
17:04Next morning, Fuzz arrives with my latest purchases, a glue gun and a dent puller.
17:11We put some hot glue on there, glue this onto the dent there, and then we pull it with this
17:19thing.
17:20Now, that just pulls up.
17:22That's the theory.
17:23Let's have an experiment.
17:24It may work.
17:26It may not.
17:29After wiping down the pipe, Fuzz glues on the first sucker.
17:35Oh, splurge that on, stick that right in the middle there, and now we wait.
17:42How long do we wait for, Fuzz?
17:44I don't know.
17:44I might be pleasantly surprised here, Fuzz.
17:47I think you and me both.
17:48Right, so on it goes.
17:49Oh, look.
17:53Right, okay.
17:55Well, that had absolutely no pulling strength whatsoever.
18:01Right, Skid.
18:02Let's try on the tank.
18:04I think if this doesn't work, then...
18:07Oh, there we go.
18:09Straight off.
18:11Oh, I quite like it.
18:12Sort of battle scarf, do you?
18:14I like the patina, yeah.
18:15I think it's lovely.
18:17Oh, well.
18:17Well, back to the drawing board.
18:19That's right.
18:19Well, break the news to Henry.
18:22You won't like it.
18:24Spend some money.
18:24I know.
18:25Not much.
18:29So we'll have to live with the dents.
18:31But before we sell it, we've got to take the Yamaha out properly.
18:37Skids on a BSA C11.
18:40And I'm on the Yammy.
18:48Now, back in the day, these were seen as pretty pedestrian motorcycles.
18:56But actually, they're quite nippy.
19:00I have to tell you, it's a lovely thing and it goes really nicely.
19:05User friendly.
19:06That's what they say.
19:08Quite a lovely bike to be riding on a day like this.
19:20It's quite interesting, really, that this Yamaha probably kind of superseded the BSA 250.
19:29Lovely thing, but totally outmoded.
19:43That goes really nicely.
19:45Well, I was following you and it sounded lovely.
19:48Yeah.
19:48It looked lovely.
19:49And following you, mate, being on that BSA, I felt like I was following a Trance 500 Speed Twin.
19:56Yeah.
19:56Do you know what's interesting you say that?
19:57Even though that is Japanese, because it's of an era in 72, I think these two go quite well together.
20:03Much as that was obviously doing its bit to get rid of BSA completely.
20:08Yes.
20:08Do you know what I mean?
20:09Yes.
20:09But I mean, really, mate, what a lovely thing.
20:11This cruises beautifully at 38.
20:14Yes.
20:14A little bit more frenzied at 40.
20:17Yes.
20:17And at 45, it's all over.
20:19Yes.
20:20It's time to head for the hills.
20:21Unlike that.
20:23So it looks great and rides great, but alas, we've got to sell it.
20:30And the good news is, next day, we get a punter.
20:33Mike, a local legend who used to run the bike shop in Whitney.
20:39What do you reckon, then?
20:41That's nice.
20:42Yeah, I like it.
20:42It's alright, isn't it?
20:44It's a survivor.
20:45It's very original.
20:46Yeah.
20:46It does look very nice, yeah.
20:4819,000 miles, which I think is genuine.
20:50I hope so.
20:51It rides lovely, doesn't it?
20:52Two grand, mate.
20:54Two grand.
20:55It's a bit strong, I think.
20:5718?
20:59I think that's fair enough.
21:01Yeah.
21:0218.
21:02Lovely.
21:091750 it was all in.
21:11Yeah.
21:12Including...
21:13Yes.
21:13That lovely light box, which we think is original, and the double-sided enamel sign, eh?
21:20You know what I like about that as well?
21:22What?
21:23You weren't greedy.
21:24No, no.
21:25You've got to make a bit of profit.
21:26Mate, 50 on the bike, and we've still got those two signs.
21:32Happy days.
21:33Happy days.
21:34SPQR, mate, you are right.
21:35Yeah.
21:36Small profit.
21:37Actually, quite a large return.
22:01If you look at all these signs on your mind, we're just clicking on your health.
22:01No, no.
22:01No. Maybe somebody
22:01can use
22:01I never have to
22:01draws in it. Now, we're not supposed
22:02about... Are we out
