00:50How to know what God is like.
00:53Well, that should keep us going for a little while.
00:57I had so many notes that I just, I've left most of them at home, you'll be happy to know.
01:02But it's been a great study for me and I've really enjoyed it and appreciated it.
01:06So good night and thanks very much.
01:14How to know what God is like.
01:16We're going to read from John chapter 14.
01:19My aim is, for this little study tonight, is that it will help us to consider whether we're anything like
01:29God.
01:31So there'll be challenge and there'll be encouragement.
01:37John chapter 14, verse 1.
01:40Do not let your hearts be troubled, Jesus said.
01:46Trust in God.
01:48Trust also in me.
01:53See, the disciples, they were very troubled.
01:57Jesus had just told them that someone was going to betray them.
02:01Him and someone was going to deny him.
02:06And they thought, wow.
02:11Peter was told he was going to be disowned Christ three times.
02:17Sure, their hearts were troubled.
02:19Let's read on.
02:20Well, in my father's house, Jesus said, are many rooms.
02:26If it were not so, I would have told you.
02:30I'm going there to prepare a place for you.
02:33And if I go and prepare a place for you,
02:37I will come back and take you to be with me,
02:40that you also may be where I am.
02:44Well, the antidote for a troubled heart
02:49is to trust in God and in Jesus Christ.
02:54And the antidote for worrying about the future
03:01is if we have an assurance that there is life eternal,
03:07as Jesus was just spelling out to the disciples.
03:11Let's read on a little bit.
03:12Jesus said, you know the way to the place where I'm going.
03:17Thomas said to him,
03:20Lord, we don't know where you're going.
03:23So how can we know the way?
03:26Jesus answered, I am the way
03:31and the truth and the life.
03:35No one comes to the father except through me.
03:39If you really knew me,
03:42you would know my father as well.
03:46From now on, you do know him
03:49and have seen him.
03:51These verses, these three verses,
03:53are just not acceptable at all
03:58to the majority of faiths in our world.
04:02They're not acceptable to the majority of religious people.
04:08In fact, Jesus was being accused of blasphemy.
04:15As not only did he claim to be the way to God,
04:20but that he was the truth
04:23and the life.
04:25And even more, verse 7,
04:28Jesus says,
04:29if you really knew me,
04:35you would know my father as well.
04:40How could they accept that?
04:42This man who they hadn't known very long,
04:47maybe three years at the most,
04:51how could they accept that?
04:53If you know me,
04:56you would know Father God.
04:59You can understand them
05:01having difficulty and getting their heads around it.
05:04Well, I think so anyway.
05:08But I'd like to unpack that a little bit more
05:11later on.
05:13And I want us to see what
05:14our lives might look like
05:18if we really,
05:20really knew the Father
05:22through knowing the Son, Jesus.
05:26But for now,
05:27let's just read on a little bit more
05:29from the second half of verse 7.
05:32From now on,
05:34you do know him and have seen him.
05:37Philip said,
05:39Lord,
05:41show us the Father
05:43and that will be enough.
05:47Jesus answered,
05:49don't you know me, Philip,
05:52even after I have been among you
05:53such a long time?
05:57Anyone who has seen me
05:59has seen the Father.
06:01How can you say,
06:03show us the Father?
06:05Don't you believe that I am in the Father
06:08and that the Father is in me?
06:12The words I say to you
06:14are not just my own.
06:16Rather,
06:17it is the Father living in me
06:19who is doing his work.
06:22Believe me when I say
06:24that I am in the Father
06:26and the Father is in me.
06:29Or at least,
06:30believe on the evidence
06:32of the miracles themselves.
06:34I tell you the truth.
06:37Anyone who has faith in me
06:39will do what I have been doing.
06:42He will do even greater things
06:44than these
06:45because
06:45I am going to the Father.
06:48And I will do
06:49whatever you ask in my name
06:51so that the Son
06:53may bring glory to the Father.
06:56You may ask me
06:57for anything in my name
06:59and I will do it.
07:02If you love me,
07:04you will obey what I command
07:05and I will ask the Father
07:08and he will give you
07:09another counsellor
07:10to be with you forever,
07:12the Spirit of Truth.
07:15Now, we can rightly say
07:17of God
07:18that he
07:19is almighty,
07:22all-powerful,
07:23all-knowing,
07:24all-present,
07:25all-loving,
07:26and good,
07:28and merciful.
07:30But
07:31if I
07:33and we
07:34know that,
07:36then
07:37how does that
07:38shape our lives?
07:41Jesus is teaching
07:42his disciples
07:43what God the Father
07:46is like.
07:48Verse 11 again,
07:50believe me
07:51when I say
07:52that I am in the Father
07:53and the Father
07:55is in me.
07:56or at least
07:58believe
07:59on the evidence
08:00of the miracles
08:02themselves.
08:06And verse 7,
08:07back to verse 7,
08:09if you really knew me,
08:12you would know
08:13my Father
08:14as well.
08:15In John
08:16chapter 1
08:18and verse 1,
08:20we read,
08:21in the beginning
08:22was the Word
08:23and the Word
08:25was with God
08:26and the Word
08:27was God.
08:29He was with God
08:30in the beginning.
08:32Verse 14,
08:33the Word
08:35became flesh
08:36and made
08:37his dwelling
08:38among us.
08:39We have
08:40seen his glory,
08:41the glory
08:42of the one
08:43and only
08:44who came
08:45from the Father
08:46full
08:47of grace
08:48and truth.
08:53So when
08:53in verse 7
08:55of chapter 14,
08:57Jesus says,
08:59if you
09:01really knew me,
09:04the disciples
09:05were really
09:05struggling
09:06to get their
09:07heads round
09:08what they were
09:09hearing.
09:12I have a lot
09:13of sympathy
09:13with Philip
09:14who in
09:15verse 8
09:16is saying,
09:17Lord,
09:17show us
09:18the Father
09:19and that
09:20will be
09:21enough
09:21for us.
09:25But we
09:25know from
09:26history
09:26that seeing
09:27God
09:27in itself
09:30is not
09:31enough.
09:33The children
09:34of Israel
09:34saw God
09:35revealed to
09:36them in
09:37so many
09:37ways,
09:38again
09:39and again
09:40and they
09:42didn't follow
09:42his ways.
09:44That's why
09:45Jesus is
09:46explaining
09:46that the
09:47only way
09:48to know
09:48the Father
09:50is through
09:51faith in
09:52him and
09:53that when
09:53he had
09:54gone,
09:55he would
09:55send the
09:56Holy Spirit,
09:57the Counselor,
09:59the Spirit
10:00of Truth
10:00to enable
10:01us to
10:02know
10:02and to
10:04follow him.
10:04So back
10:05to verse
10:0511
10:06of chapter
10:0714.
10:08Believe me
10:09when I
10:10say that
10:11I am
10:12in the
10:12Father
10:12and the
10:13Father
10:14is in
10:14me
10:15or at
10:16least
10:16believe
10:17on the
10:18evidence
10:18of the
10:19miracles
10:21themselves.
10:24It's easy
10:25to forget
10:26that the
10:26miracles that
10:27Jesus was
10:27doing was
10:28always trying
10:29to point
10:29to the
10:30Father
10:31to show
10:32his character
10:33what he
10:34was like
10:34how we
10:36might
10:37be able
10:38to follow
10:38him.
10:39So let's
10:40think about
10:40the evidence
10:41that Jesus
10:41is talking
10:42about and
10:43especially
10:43let's
10:44invite the
10:45Holy Spirit
10:45to search
10:47our own
10:47hearts and
10:48minds as
10:50to how
10:50well we
10:52know the
10:52God we
10:52profess.
10:55Deep
10:56thinking,
10:56isn't it?
10:57Challenging
10:58stuff.
10:59But believe
11:00me, I've
11:00been going
11:01through the
11:01rigour so you
11:02might as
11:02well as
11:02well.
11:05there will
11:06be a
11:06mixture of
11:06encouragement,
11:07there will
11:07be challenges
11:08in the
11:09actions we'll
11:10look at.
11:10So, how
11:12do we
11:13know what
11:14God is
11:15like?
11:17Let's look
11:18at some of
11:18the things
11:18Jesus said
11:19and did.
11:21I'm going
11:22to give
11:22Bible references
11:23for each
11:24one but I
11:25won't be
11:26reading each
11:26of them.
11:28Luke 15
11:301-7
11:32is about
11:33a good
11:33shepherd.
11:35The good
11:36shepherd who
11:37went out
11:38looking for
11:39the one
11:40sheep that
11:41had gone
11:41missing.
11:42He had a
11:42nice big
11:42flock of
11:43a hundred
11:43but one
11:44was missing
11:45and he
11:45went out
11:46to find
11:46it.
11:47And we're
11:47told by
11:48Jesus that
11:49there would
11:50be rejoicing
11:51in heaven
11:53over one
11:55that came
11:56to him.
11:57Talking
11:58about people
11:59of course
12:01and he
12:01then goes
12:02on from
12:03verse 8
12:05to 10
12:06and he
12:07gives another
12:07illustration
12:08about a
12:08woman
12:09searching
12:11for a
12:11coin.
12:12The lost
12:13coin.
12:14She looked
12:15everywhere.
12:16She cleared
12:17the house
12:19and she
12:19found the
12:20coin.
12:20I don't
12:21know if it's
12:21down the
12:21back of the
12:22sofa or
12:22where it
12:22was but
12:23she found
12:24the coin.
12:25And Jesus
12:26is just
12:27using this
12:27illustration
12:29to show
12:30that God
12:32is seeking
12:33and he
12:33wants to
12:33seek and
12:34to save
12:35any who
12:35are lost.
12:37That's his
12:38mission.
12:39And
12:40just one
12:41they'll be
12:44rejoicing in
12:45heaven
12:46even if it's
12:47just one.
12:49How amazing
12:50is that?
12:51God
12:52doesn't
12:52want to
12:53lose
12:54anyone.
12:56He will
12:56give
12:57opportunity
12:58so that
12:59all may
12:59come to
13:00faith in
13:01Jesus
13:01Christ.
13:02So we
13:03have a
13:03role to
13:04play.
13:05God
13:06expects
13:06us
13:08to be
13:09just as
13:09vigilant.
13:12And that's
13:13a challenge
13:13isn't it?
13:15Are we
13:15that vigilant
13:16to find
13:18that one
13:18that's
13:18lost?
13:19make sure
13:20we speak
13:21to people.
13:22Make sure
13:23we speak
13:25to them
13:25in a way
13:25that is
13:26Christ-like.
13:29What do
13:30we learn
13:30about God
13:31through
13:31Peter
13:33walking on
13:34the water?
13:35Jesus was
13:36trying to
13:36show something
13:38again.
13:39And we can
13:39learn a lot
13:40about what
13:42God is like
13:43through this.
13:45The boat
13:46had gone
13:46out,
13:46Jesus came
13:47later,
13:48so he
13:49took a
13:49shortcut
13:49and walked
13:50straight
13:50across the
13:51lake.
13:52And
13:53they were
13:54terrified.
13:56They saw
13:57this figure
13:58walking across
13:59towards them.
13:59It was
14:00windy,
14:01the waves
14:01were high.
14:02They thought
14:03it was a
14:04ghost.
14:06But then
14:07Jesus said,
14:08don't worry,
14:08it's me.
14:10And Peter
14:11says,
14:12if it's
14:13you,
14:15command me
14:16to come
14:17out and
14:18walk on
14:18the water.
14:20Wow.
14:21Now,
14:22we might
14:23think that's
14:23foolhardy,
14:24but I see
14:26it as
14:26faith.
14:27I think
14:28that's
14:28amazing.
14:29Because
14:30actually,
14:31we can
14:32learn a lot
14:32from that.
14:34God, I
14:35believe,
14:35is telling
14:35us through
14:36his spirit
14:37to go
14:38here and
14:39go there
14:39and do
14:40this and
14:40do that.
14:42Do we
14:43do it?
14:44Will we
14:44do it?
14:46Will we
14:46get out
14:47of the
14:47boat?
14:49Often
14:50you hear
14:50sermons
14:51on his
14:51lack of
14:52faith because
14:53he started
14:54to sink.
14:55Okay.
14:57But that's
14:58okay.
14:59At least
14:59he obeyed.
15:00At least
15:00he went.
15:03But the
15:03great thing
15:04is that
15:04we're learning
15:05here is
15:06that Jesus
15:07reached out
15:08his hand
15:09and got
15:10hold of
15:11it and
15:12lifted him
15:12up so
15:14he didn't
15:14sink.
15:17So we
15:18need to
15:18have faith.
15:20We might
15:21have fear
15:21sometimes,
15:23but we
15:23need to
15:23have trust
15:25that God
15:25will always
15:26reach out
15:26his hand.
15:27If we're
15:27in his
15:28will,
15:29if we've
15:29taken what
15:30he said
15:31and done
15:31it or
15:32doing it,
15:34and we'll
15:34fall,
15:35we will
15:35fall,
15:36but he'll
15:37reach out
15:37his hand
15:38and he'll
15:39lift us
15:39up again
15:41and again.
15:41That's
15:42what God
15:43is like.
15:45In
15:46John 17
15:47we can
15:47read these
15:48words in
15:49verse 3
15:50about
15:51eternal
15:52life.
15:53Now
15:54this is
15:54eternal
15:55life that
15:56they may
15:57know you,
15:58the only
16:00true God
16:00and Jesus
16:02Christ
16:04whom you
16:05have sent.
16:06This is
16:06eternal
16:07life that
16:07they may
16:08know you.
16:11this is
16:12eternal
16:12life.
16:13For the
16:14believer,
16:15this is
16:17eternal
16:18life.
16:19We're there
16:19already.
16:20We've
16:21started it,
16:21folks.
16:24And isn't
16:25that wonderful?
16:26People talk
16:27about what
16:28they're going
16:28to do in
16:29eternity.
16:30I'm already
16:31trying to
16:31live it.
16:32So that's
16:33why we need
16:34to be
16:34knowing what
16:34God is
16:35like now.
16:36we need
16:37to be
16:37able to
16:37honour
16:38him now.
16:39Otherwise
16:40it's going
16:40to be a
16:40big shock
16:41when we
16:41get to
16:41heaven.
16:43Eternal
16:44life is
16:44actually
16:45started
16:45for those
16:46who know
16:47the
16:48Father
16:48God
16:48through
16:49faith in
16:50Jesus
16:50Christ
16:51the
16:51Son.
16:52So I
16:53love that
16:53first
16:53miracle
16:55in
16:55Cana
16:56of
16:56Galilee.
16:58Jesus
16:58changing
16:59water into
16:59wine.
17:00He's gone
17:00to a
17:00wedding.
17:02He's
17:02gone to
17:02a
17:03wedding.
17:05And
17:05they run
17:06out of
17:06wine.
17:08And
17:09there's
17:09panic.
17:10Because
17:10that was
17:11really,
17:11really
17:12dishonourable
17:13to do
17:13that.
17:16And
17:16Jesus
17:17got the
17:18water pots
17:19filled up
17:21and they
17:22changed
17:22them to
17:23wine.
17:24Great
17:24miracle,
17:25isn't
17:25it?
17:26But
17:26that's
17:27really
17:27not the
17:28miracle.
17:29What the
17:30miracle is,
17:31is it
17:32was the
17:32best
17:32wine
17:33ever.
17:36And the
17:37Toastmaster
17:38just couldn't
17:38believe it.
17:39And he
17:40said,
17:40most people
17:41have the
17:42best stuff
17:42at the
17:43beginning,
17:43and when
17:43you've
17:44had a
17:44few,
17:44you're
17:44okay to
17:45have the
17:45cheaper
17:45stuff at
17:46the end,
17:46because you
17:46won't
17:47notice.
17:49But God
17:50is not
17:50like that.
17:52The best
17:53is still
17:53to come,
17:54folks.
17:55And I'm
17:55really excited
17:56about that.
17:58The best
17:59is still
17:59to come.
18:02The main
18:03thing isn't
18:05changing the
18:06water into
18:06wine.
18:07The main
18:09thing,
18:09it's the
18:10best.
18:11And with
18:12God,
18:12we always
18:13get the
18:15best,
18:16because he
18:16doesn't know
18:17how to do
18:18it any
18:19differently.
18:20That's what
18:21God is
18:22like.
18:26And
18:28there's
18:29no good
18:30having
18:31great
18:31faith
18:32in
18:33God
18:36if we
18:37underestimate
18:38who he
18:38is.
18:41People
18:41think,
18:42you think
18:42they've got
18:43a big
18:43faith.
18:44Well,
18:44that's okay,
18:45as long
18:45as they've
18:46got in
18:46that faith
18:47a big
18:47God.
18:48It's more
18:49important to
18:50know how
18:51great God
18:52is and
18:52have a
18:53small
18:53faith in
18:54him.
18:56Then it
18:56is the
18:56other way
18:57around,
18:57because that
18:58doesn't
18:58work.
19:00You can
19:00have all
19:01the faith
19:01you like,
19:01but if
19:02your God
19:02is small,
19:03then you're
19:04not having
19:04much
19:05expectation,
19:06and nothing
19:06much will
19:07happen.
19:07Ephesians
19:083 verses
19:0920 and
19:1021 says
19:12that God
19:12is able
19:14to do
19:14immeasurably
19:16more than
19:18all we
19:18can ask
19:19or even
19:21imagine.
19:24God is
19:25able.
19:25The
19:26limitation
19:27is on
19:27us.
19:29He wants
19:30us to
19:30ask him,
19:32and he
19:32wants to
19:33work in
19:34us,
19:36and he
19:37wants to
19:37work
19:37according
19:39to his
19:41power
19:42that's at
19:43work within
19:44us.
19:48I'm always
19:48amazed that
19:49God knows
19:50exactly what
19:51we're like.
19:52He knows
19:52what I'm
19:52like anyway.
19:53I can't
19:54speak for
19:54you.
19:55He knows
19:56what I'm
19:57like.
19:58He knows
19:58that I
19:59fail so
20:00often,
20:01and he
20:02knows that
20:03I struggle
20:03to do the
20:04things that
20:04he wants
20:04me to
20:05do.
20:06But the
20:06wonderful
20:07thing is
20:07that he's
20:08given us
20:09his Holy
20:10Spirit to
20:11enable us.
20:12He's asking
20:13us not to
20:14do it in
20:14our own
20:15strength.
20:16If we
20:16try,
20:17then we
20:17will fail.
20:19It's
20:20his power
20:21that's
20:22working
20:22within us
20:24that will
20:25bring success.
20:27God
20:27expects
20:28to do
20:30stuff
20:30through
20:31us
20:32in his
20:33power.
20:35In
20:35Matthew
20:3621,
20:3712 to
20:3713,
20:39there was
20:41a lot
20:42going on
20:42in the
20:43temple
20:43courtyard.
20:45Matthew
20:4621,
20:4712 to
20:4813,
20:49Jesus
20:49in the
20:49temple.
20:51Jesus
20:51entered the
20:52temple area
20:54and drove
20:54out all
20:55who were
20:55buying and
20:56selling there.
20:57He overturned
20:59the tables
20:59of the
21:00money changers
21:01and the
21:02benches of
21:02those
21:03sellers
21:03selling
21:04doves.
21:05It is
21:06written,
21:06he said
21:06to them,
21:07my house
21:08will be
21:08called a
21:09house of
21:10prayer,
21:10but you
21:11are making
21:12it a
21:12den of
21:13robbers.
21:17We could
21:18talk for a
21:18long while
21:19about what
21:19was going
21:19on there
21:20and go
21:20into the
21:21background
21:22of the
21:23temple
21:23and so
21:24on,
21:25but I
21:25don't really
21:26want to
21:26do that.
21:27There was
21:27lots of
21:28things going
21:28on,
21:29but I
21:30want us
21:31to just
21:31major on
21:32one thing
21:32here.
21:34God
21:35hates
21:36exploitation
21:38and
21:38unfairness.
21:41There's a
21:42lot of
21:42exploitation
21:43and
21:43unfairness.
21:44God
21:45hates it.
21:46He hates
21:47it,
21:49whether it's
21:49done by a
21:50group or
21:51whether it's
21:51done by
21:52individuals.
21:57there's
21:57those who
21:58made
21:58millions
21:59of
21:59pounds
22:01by
22:01ripping
22:02off the
22:02governments
22:03and the
22:03hospitals
22:04during the
22:05Covid
22:06crisis.
22:08They
22:08one day
22:09will have
22:09to explain
22:10their
22:10actions
22:12to
22:12Almighty
22:13God.
22:14And I
22:14just use
22:15that as
22:15an
22:15illustration.
22:18But we
22:19can so
22:20easily
22:20fall into
22:22the trap
22:23of
22:24charging a
22:24little bit
22:25too much
22:26or paying
22:27a little
22:28bit too
22:29little.
22:30God is
22:30not like
22:31that.
22:32So we
22:33must not
22:34be like
22:34it either.
22:37Jesus
22:37taught about
22:38an unforgiving
22:40servant
22:40in Matthew
22:4118.
22:42This servant
22:43owed a lot
22:44of money
22:44to the
22:45master.
22:46And the
22:47master went
22:47to him to
22:47get the
22:48money paid
22:48back.
22:50And he
22:50said,
22:51I can't
22:51pay it.
22:52I just
22:52can't
22:53pay it.
22:53I haven't
22:53got enough.
22:54And he
22:54went down
22:55on his
22:55knees and
22:56he begged
22:56him for
22:58forgiveness
22:58and begged
23:00his mercy
23:00to cancel
23:02the debt
23:02or at least
23:03give him
23:03time to
23:04pay it.
23:07And his
23:07master said,
23:10I'll wipe
23:10the slate
23:11clean.
23:12That's
23:13okay.
23:14He forgave
23:15him the
23:16whole lot.
23:17How
23:18wonderful.
23:20well,
23:21it would
23:21have been
23:21wonderful.
23:22But
23:23unfortunately,
23:24this man
23:25then went
23:26on,
23:27having been
23:27forgiven

32:04we've looked a lot of illustrations from the new testament so i just wanted to pick one
32:10about the amazement of what god is like from the words of david in psalm 8 you'll know it well
32:18psalm 8 oh lord our lord how majestic is your name in all the earth you have set your glory
32:26above the
32:26heavens from the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies to
32:33silence the silence the foe and the avenger when i consider your heavens the work of your fingers
32:43the moon and the stars which you have set in place what is man that you are mindful of him
32:55the son of man that you care for him you made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
33:05and crowned him with glory and honor you made him ruler over the works of your hands
33:12you put everything under his feet all flocks and herds and the beasts of the field the birds of the
33:21air
33:21and the fish of the sea all that swim in the paths of the seas oh lord our lord how
33:31majestic is your name
33:34in all the earth
33:38so we're going to conclude in our passage john chapter 14 by reading verse 15 if you love me
33:48you will obey what i command and i will ask the father and he will give you another counselor to
33:56be with you forever
33:59the spirit of truth
34:05if we want to enjoy the love of god
34:08we must first come to him through faith in jesus christ
34:14then in order to live his way we must rely on the power of the holy spirit to enable us
34:22indwell us and live through us
34:28isn't it wonderful to know that because god knows that we haven't got a chance
34:34of living his type of life in our own strength
34:38he has provided the power and strength of his holy spirit to help us
34:47in verses 25 and 26 it says all this i have spoken while still with you
34:54but the counselor the holy spirit whom the father will send in my name
35:00will teach you all things and will remind you

35:13says these words
35:19he who did not spare his own son but gave him up for us all
35:25how will he not also along with him graciously give us all things
35:39how amazing is that that's what god is like
35:44god who did not spare his own son
35:52but he will graciously give us all things
35:57all things that we need to serve him
36:00all things that we need to be encouraged to live our lives for him
36:07day by day and my prayer for myself
36:14is that i might come to know him better day by day
36:19as i did this study and i knew before i did the study but
36:23you see that we're a long way off from what god is really like
36:28and may his holy spirit help us to become more like him day by day
36:33just going to close with some verses from
36:36romans chapter 15 and verse 13
36:41may the god of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him
36:48so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the holy spirit
