00:00What age does a boxer hit their prime?
00:03For Chantelle Bird-Adams, the spotlight has come at 32.
00:07Returning from a 10-year hiatus, she's had just one pro fight and already a title fight
00:13is hanging over her head.
00:15Now the media is in her face, asking questions as the bidding goes up for a local women's
00:20superfight following her crippling knockout win on debut.
00:24Dollar bills are being waived even before the public can wrap their minds around the
00:28origins of Adams.
00:30Well, initially I used to do track and field, I did sprinting, I did 100 and 200, and also
00:37I did long jump.
00:39It just wasn't doing it for me anymore.
00:41I did it primarily in secondary school and I had a club that I used to go to, but I
00:48wanted
00:49to do something else, it was either tennis or MMA actually.
00:54It would make sense for Adams to turn to a coach who has brought glitz and glamour through
00:59fighters of yesteryear.
01:01Their path to success is now her present desire.
01:04Local fighters, I train with Ray Ramlerine, I know, well I know her personally, I train
01:09with her.
01:09So I look up to her not just as a boxer but as a person, she's very professional and she
01:13kind of taught me how to, you know, move around in the bowl of boxing as a female.
01:19The fire they carried in their gloves is now hers to ignite.
01:23So I started to do boxing and from there I never looked back.
01:26I just thought that boxing is, it's more than just trying to punch each other in the head,
01:31you know.
01:32It's a science.
01:33It's about inches and millimeters and distancing and movement and I realized that it's more of
01:39a science than anything else.
01:41It takes more than technique to win a fight.
01:43Courage adds purpose.
01:45Adams found hers in Canada.
01:48At some point I was getting nervous because I thought she had more fights than me.
01:52She had a lot of wins on her record and I was like, wow.
01:54But I knew that when my songs started to play and I walked out to my song and I seen
02:01everybody
02:01in that crowd probably against me, I just knew I had to win regardless of what I was going
02:05to win that fight.
02:06I wasn't coming back home here, but I lost my first fight.
02:10Never.
02:11What song, what song, what's your walk out song?
02:13It was Ahsoka, I like neither black man.
02:17Now her hook in the sport is a solid right hand, but she finds comfort from Southpaw as
02:22well.
02:24Sometimes hook-hook Barat Ramuta says her passion burns too hot as cautionary words evaded the oblivious.
02:31She has the correct mentality for the sport.
02:33She has a little temperament, I would say.
02:36You know, she needs to be a little bit more tempered and a little more, ah, she has to
02:42calm down a little bit sometimes, you know, because she's a little aggressive when she
02:46gets agitated.
02:47But training will get that and, you know, we do get a complete package in fighters, you
02:52know, training will bring what we want.
02:54For now, the boys face Chantel's fury.
02:58As the youngest of seven siblings, she has quickly learnt there's nothing pretty about
03:03hard work, but a snarl pays dividends against an intimidated opponent.
03:08Come June 5th, the writing is on the wall for Adams, who has found her fire at Ram's boxing
03:15gym.
03:15And now, bird must fly.
