00:00In 2024, Anika Bailey said she wanted to be the first teenager to win the UESPEC half marathon.
00:06My objective for 2025 is to get two gold medals in my two events I'm doing and to be the first youngest female to win the half marathon next year.
00:20The 17-year-old accomplished that dream on Sunday morning by being the first woman across the line in the UESPEC half marathon in a time of 1 hour, 30 minutes, 36 seconds.
00:31When do you think it will settle in that you've won the UESPEC half marathon?
00:34It will take me a while. It will take me a really long while because when I finish, I can believe that I did that and I put out that performance.
00:43But I know I've been training towards this moment because I really wanted to win it.
00:49It's not been an easy road to victory, but the signs were there that she meant business.
00:53She won the Eastern Credit Union 15K, remained injury-free for Karifta and kept her form and speed for the races thereafter.
01:02Evidenced when she broke the 19-minute barrier at the Ventures Credit Union 5K, she just needed to overcome her fears on the start line for her dream race.
01:11To be honest, I was really nervous because, I don't know, but before races and stuff, I'd be like really nervous.
01:19And it used to take me a while to, like, thooning while I'm running during the race, but, yeah, I was nervous.
01:26What time were you looking to accomplish?
01:29My time, I was looking for 1.29, but I did 1.30, which was a very big PB for me, so I'm still proud.
01:38What was your previous best?
01:40My previous time was 1.48.
01:42For a teenager, Bailey demonstrated maturity, proving that she's a dream student for any coach.
01:49Coach Paris, he did a really great job to me.
01:54I think that he did a great job, and he got me to where I wanted to be within this small space of time.
02:01And I would really like to say thank you, Coach Paris.
02:05Bailey's just getting started as she intends to switch her focus to the Run Barbados 1-mile, 5K, and half marathon later in the year.
