00:00Hi there and welcome to the Met Office forecast for the upcoming week.
00:04The first week of climatological summer, of course, but you'd be forgiven for thinking
00:09we've already had summer given the record-breaking heat of last week.
00:13Six consecutive days somewhere in the UK exceeded 30 Celsius and that capped off for England
00:20the warmest spring on record, for Wales the second warmest spring on record and for the
00:24UK as a whole the third warmest spring on record.
00:28In other words, it was an extraordinary spell of weather last week, but this week, well
00:34we're back to business as usual with low pressure coming along on a south-shifted jet stream.
00:41In fact, that aspect of the forecast, not so typical because it is shifted a bit further
00:45south than normal and it is going to carry low after low across the UK.
00:49This low pressure coming along for the middle of the week with tightly packed isobars will
00:54bring unseasonably strong winds to the south and west before the jet stream dives even
01:00further south and allows an especially cool day to occur on Friday.
01:05Showers ease on Friday, but further spells of rain come in from the west for the start
01:11of the weekend.
01:12So it's going to be a very mixed week of weather.
01:15Rain will be the main theme, either in the form of spells of persistent wet weather or frequent
01:21thundery showers and you can see how the rain accumulates through the week.
01:24Day by day, the blues on this map getting darker, indicating we're getting up to 50 millimetres
01:29of rainfall between Monday and Friday widely across the country and some of these brighter
01:34colours emerge by Friday as well.
01:36This is the accumulated rain Monday to Friday.
01:38Scotland, parts of Western England, Wales, parts of Northern Ireland, especially over Western
01:42hills seeing more than 100 millimetres of rain accumulating.
01:45So the north and the west, the wettest places in the UK, but even in the east we're going
01:50to see some wet weather.
01:52Welcome news for gardeners and growers, of course, after a particularly dry spring.
01:57Speaking of the east, we've got a wet start on Tuesday with some spells of persistent rain
02:04clearing into the North Sea, lingering across the northeast of Scotland before heavy and
02:08thundery showers move in from the southwest.
02:10Initially, hail and thunder expected across southwest England, Wales, those thundery downpours
02:15move into central and eastern parts of England during the afternoon, reaching parts of Northern
02:19Ireland as well as much as Scotland as well.
02:22So hardly anywhere immune from these frequent and lively downpours.
02:26Gusty winds accompanying them as well.
02:28Where you've got the showers, of course, it's going to feel on the cool side, especially
02:31in comparison to last week's weather.
02:33But temperatures actually technically a degree or so above average on Tuesday.
02:38That's not going to last.
02:39We're going to see things cool off day by day through the week ahead.
02:43Now, a brief gap between weather systems on Tuesday night going to Wednesday, but still
02:48frequent showers across the northeast of the UK on Wednesday morning.
02:52And then a spell of persistent rain, strengthening winds into Northern Ireland, Wales and the
02:56southwest first thing.
02:57That then sweeps across the UK, a wet end to the day for southern Scotland, the north and
03:02east of England, before the rain moves into the north of Scotland as we close the day
03:07out further south and west.
03:09Frequent showers follow the main spell of rain and the wind picks up a little, making it feel
03:15a touch cooler compared with Tuesday.
03:17Temperatures about average for the time of year.
03:2020 Celsius there in the southeast, mid-teens towards the northwest.
03:25But Thursday will be even breezier.
03:28That breeze containing a lot of showers.
03:31Those showers merging to give longer spells of rain.
03:33They're going to be lively with hail and thunder in places as well.
03:37Again, nowhere really immune from the threat of these lively downpours.
03:40But there will be some gaps in between the showers, some brighter spells, although it's
03:44going to feel a little cooler once again with that unseasonably strong breeze towards the
03:49south and the west in particular with gales around exposed southwestern shores.
03:54Less windy for Scotland where the showers will be slower to move along.
03:58But, yeah, a very changeable, if not unsettled, end to the week.
04:03Friday starts with that keen breeze and frequent showers moving through.
04:07The showers become fewer, not quite as lively into the afternoon, but still quite a number
04:12around.
04:13An increased chance of some breaks in between the showers, some sunny spells perhaps for
04:19a lucky few.
04:20Although, it's going to feel cool on Friday, even if you've got some sunshine, temperatures
04:26a couple of degrees below average by this stage.
04:30Now, later in the day on Friday, the showers ease.
04:32A brief ridge of high pressure crosses the country, but only ahead of the next weather
04:36systems moving in from the Atlantic, carried again by a south-shifted jet stream.
04:41In fact, two branches of the jet stream coming along and two areas of low pressure interacting
04:46with those two branches of the jet stream, making things rather complex for computer models
04:51to figure out.
04:52So, a little bit of uncertainty about the direction and the track and the timing of this
04:57area of low pressure.
04:58But it looks likely to bring another spell of wet weather in as we begin the weekend,
05:02especially towards the southwest.
05:04And that's going to cross the country again, followed by showers as we end the weekend.
05:08But the next low on Sunday, more likely to take a north-shifted track.
05:14And this is the main theme from Sunday onwards.
05:17The jet stream shifting a little bit further north again.
05:20So, low pressure more likely, and this is the most likely weather pattern when we run
05:24the computer models many, many times.
05:26Low pressure more likely towards Iceland or in between Scotland and Iceland.
05:31That would bring the wettest weather to western Scotland, northwest England, northern Ireland,
05:35with a hint there of higher pressure towards the south, but still rather mixed as we begin
05:43next week.
05:45Low pressure, again, this is the most likely weather pattern for Monday the 8th of June.
05:49Low pressure towards Iceland, again the wettest weather across northwestern parts of the UK.
05:54But a stronger signal there of higher pressure trying to nudge in from the southwest, bringing
06:00something a little drier and perhaps warmer for at least southern parts of the UK.
06:04And then perhaps later in the week, more of the UK experiencing the influence from higher
06:10pressure.
06:11So, a long way off.
06:12We'll keep you updated on that aspect of the forecast over the next few days.
06:16And you can find those updates, as always, on our YouTube channel.
06:19Bye-bye.
