00:00Welcome along to your Easter weekend weather update from the Met Office.
00:04A four-day weekend in April.
00:06It's always going to be hard to summarise, but we do have a storm moving in.
00:10That's only a small part of the story, however, because it won't be affecting everywhere
00:14and many places will have some fine weather at some point during the long weekend.
00:19So let's break it down.
00:20We will start by talking about Storm Dave because it is the most significant part of the weather through the
00:26weekend.
00:26One air of low pressure clearing away to the north on Good Friday,
00:29but it's down here where Storm Dave is brewing and interacting with the jet stream,
00:34that fast-moving ribbon of air that really picks up this storm system and spins it up.
00:39A couple of times it intensifies initially as it approaches the west of the Republic of Ireland
00:44and then again perhaps as it moves towards the western side of Scotland.
00:48If you want more details on how that storm develops,
00:51well, there's a full video explaining what we're expecting from Storm Dave on our YouTube channel.
00:56But for the purposes of the weekend forecast, we're really focusing on those isobars packed together
01:01across northern Britain during Saturday afternoon and through Saturday night,
01:05potentially bringing some damaging gusts of wind.
01:07More on Dave and the warnings in a second, but it's a four-day weekend.
01:11We've got to get through Good Friday first of all, so let's rewind the clock to then.
01:16A quite cloudy start to the long weekend and quite a damp start as well.
01:20Still quite gusty and blustery as well to start off with.
01:23Still quite breezy throughout the day, but it should get a bit brighter, certainly across the south.
01:27We should tend to lose much of the rain and drizzle, so something a bit drier here,
01:31but likely to stay quite cloudy.
01:33A wetter zone over northern England and north Wales will push south through the day.
01:37That could have some heavy bursts of rain in, but perhaps cheering up later over northern England.
01:41Some sunny spells for Scotland and Northern Ireland,
01:43but also a whole host of showers packing in on that fairly stiff wind.
01:47Those showers may well have the odd rumble of thunder mixed in,
01:51maybe some hail too, certainly at lower levels across western Scotland.
01:54And yes, some snow over the higher ground here, because the air is colder, 8 or 9 Celsius.
01:59Whereas further south, if it brightens up, we could easily get to 14, 15, maybe 16 Celsius.
02:04So, you know, feeling pleasant enough here.
02:07Temperatures will drop on Friday night, a cold start to Saturday,
02:10particularly over the north of England and Scotland with a touch of frost.
02:13There'll be some outbreaks of rain creeping through Wales, northern England during the morning,
02:17pushing their way northwards.
02:19This is the start of Storm Dave, likely to bring some heavy rain late in the day for northern Ireland,
02:24pushing into western Scotland.
02:26And yes, that is snow initially over the tops of the hills,
02:30but it will come down to lower levels, particularly as we go through Saturday evening and overnight.
02:35Now, bar the odd shower in the west, a good part of England where it's looking dry through Saturday afternoon,
02:40and it may well brighten up.
02:41So, you may well be wondering what all the fuss is about here around Storm Dave.
02:45Just a bit of a breezy day, but quite mild, quite pleasant, really.
02:48Temperatures up to, again, 50, maybe a couple of degrees higher in one or two spots,
02:53but still got the colder air in place across Scotland.
02:55And certainly feeling colder with these gusty winds really whipping up along the west coast of Wales
03:00and then through the Irish Sea during the course of the afternoon.
03:04And then they strengthen further.
03:05That's when the low intensifies again, probably crossing to the north of Scotland.
03:10Those icebergs really packing together again.
03:12So, there's gusty winds likely to continue for much of the night across Scotland.
03:17And along with that, there will also be some snow falling too.
03:21So, let's just rewind the clock and take you through the warnings as they stand.
03:26We've got a number of wind warnings in place for northern Ireland, northern England, southern Scotland and the north of
03:31Wales.
03:31Gusts of 60 miles an hour, maybe a little more around coasts, likely to cause some travel disruption,
03:36potentially some power issues as well.
03:37Those kind of winds may bring down some tree branches, perhaps cause structural damage.
03:42And then a greater risk of stronger winds across this broader area through Scotland, 70 mile an hour,
03:48perhaps in places 80 or even slightly more than that, miles an hour.
03:52Those kind of gusts are likely to cause some flying debris.
03:55We'll also have some very large waves tied into that, which could cause some issues.
03:59And then there's the snowfall falling over parts of north and west Scotland in this zone.
04:05Blizzards over the higher ground.
04:06Some pretty miserable travelling conditions here with that wet and windy weather through Saturday evening.
04:12During the early hours, the storm system tries to pull away,
04:14but then we could have another swathe of strong winds coming in across northern Scotland.
04:19As I said, particularly around the coast, those gusts of winds may exceed 80 miles an hour for a time
04:24and cause some further disruption.
04:26The storm system tries to pull away from Shetland during Saturday, still bringing some rain here for a time.
04:32Overall, a calmer day.
04:33And actually, apart from the odd shower, a good part of England and Wales will see some lengthy dry and
04:38bright spells on Sunday.
04:40The winds will ease down.
04:41Bright and blustery for Scotland and Northern Ireland.
04:43Showers coming in here, some of them still falling as snow over relatively modest hills.
04:49Temperature-wise, well, we're going to struggle a bit on Easter day.
04:53Many places may not get much above 9 or 10 degrees Celsius.
04:56It's feeling cooler with the wind, but in the south, we might just about sneak into the teens.
05:00But a fresh-feeling day, certainly, on Sunday.
05:03And then Monday, chilly starts with a frost across much of northern Britain.
05:08But, by and large, holiday Monday this day is looking pretty good.
05:12The breeze will pick up around the coast in the southwest and Northern Ireland, western Scotland.
05:17But elsewhere, I say the wind's relatively light, dry, bright.
05:20Some good spells of sunshine coming through.
05:22And with that wind wafting up from the south, yes, it may start chilly.
05:25But I suspect by the afternoon, it'll feel fairly pleasant with temperatures more widely into the teens,
05:30maybe again into the mid-teens across parts of the south.
05:33So there is some fine weather to be had this weekend, particularly so across the south.
05:36Do keep your eyes peeled, though, for further updates on those weather warnings around Storm Dave
05:42arriving on Saturday afternoon and through Saturday night.
