00:00Hi there, we are increasingly concerned about some unusually windy weather on Monday as
00:07a deep low crosses the UK. Monday happens to be the first Monday of August and a bank
00:12holiday for Scotland as luck would have it. But actually the weekend starts off with plenty
00:18of fine weather up and down the UK. We do still have a brisk breeze blowing down the
00:23North Sea coast and further showers will develop across parts of eastern England as the morning
00:28progresses. They peak around the early part of the afternoon before fading later. Patchy
00:33cloud elsewhere, a thickening of the cloud for Western Scotland, Northern Ireland, a few
00:37spots of rain here. But otherwise for much of the UK, Saturday is a fine day. Sunny spells,
00:42lightish winds and temperatures around average for the time of year. Low to mid 20s in the
00:47south, high teens low 20s further north. Now the cloud that I mentioned towards the
00:51northwest, that's ahead of this cold front which tends to move in overnight. That's going
00:55to bring a brisk breeze as well as outbreaks of rain to Northern Ireland and then into
01:00Scotland, Northern and Western England as well as Wales by dawn. The rain heaviest across
01:05North Wales, Northern England and as it clears Scotland. But it's going to be light and patchy
01:10further south. It's going to move through parts of Wales during the morning and then push
01:15into the south and southeast by the afternoon. Still the potential for some heavy showers along
01:19that front and even the old rumble of thunder for East Anglia. But otherwise it's a patchy
01:23of air. Cloudier skies in the south compared with Saturday. A bit more breezy and as a
01:28result it won't feel quite as warm. But still, low to mid 20s possible. Temperatures close
01:33to the average for the time of year. Showers following the main area of rain across Scotland
01:37and perhaps one or two showers for Northern Ireland as well. But some decent brightness in
01:41between across Northern England and North Wales. As that moves away, another system moves
01:47in. This one much more worrisome. It's going to develop very quickly as it pushes close
01:53to the jet stream on Sunday night into the start of Monday. The jet stream helping to spin
01:59it up. Of course, the jet stream very powerful for the time of year, as we said. And that's
02:03going to help deepen this low. But also because of the speed at which the jet stream interacts
02:08with the low, there is still some uncertainty about the track and the depth of it as it arrives
02:13during Monday. It could go a bit further south as a less deep feature. It could go a bit
02:18further north as a more deep feature. Either way, this is the most likely track you can
02:23see on the screen at the moment. And that would bring a widespread swathe of cloud and outbreaks
02:28of rain during Monday morning spilling in across most of the UK. The rain heaviest across
02:33Northern or Western parts of the country. And that rain persistent throughout the day in
02:38many places away from the far south. The rain then moves through during the afternoon followed
02:45by showers and the strongest of the winds likely to arrive after the main band of rain is through.
02:50So we're talking about the second half of Monday and into the early hours of Tuesday. And if this
02:55most likely scenario comes off, then the strongest winds will be across the north and west of the
03:01UK. But widely unusually strong winds for much of the country for the start of August. Of course,
03:08a lot of people travelling, people camping, temporary structures in place. This could be a very
03:13disruptive system if it comes off as per the chart here. And obviously with the wind and rain, it's
03:20going to feel very unpleasant. And those winds peaking at 50, 60, perhaps even higher miles per hour.
03:27So it's something we're watching very closely here at the Met Office and we'll keep you updated
03:31over the next few days as to developments. About that low. Bye bye.
