00:00All right. A blowout and then an upset. That's the summary from the NBA last night.
00:04The Knicks beat the 76ers in a non-competitive game, 137-98. So that means the Knicks are the
00:11first team in NBA history to win three straight games in the playoffs by 25 points or more.
00:16They crushed the Hawks. They crushed the Sixers. Jalen Brunson had 35 points. It appeared as though
00:22the Sixers were just simply outmanned, especially on defense. Here's Mike Brown on the Knicks
00:29offense coming alive. It's a lot of fun when you have concepts on either end of the floor and
00:37the guys are trying to embrace those concepts at the highest level. And when they do, it doesn't
00:45really matter what you call or who initiates the action because guys are trying to play the right
00:53way. And these guys are pros and it'd be any team, any team out on the floor. If they're
01:00trying to embrace what you're throwing out there and they're sacrificing and believing
01:07and they're connecting and all that other stuff, it can be a lot of fun.
01:12I mean, I think that when the game's kind of going like that and you're not getting near
01:17enough stops, you got to keep your scoreboard moving too, right? And I think, I don't know,
01:24I think we had three go in and out in the second quarter, what you're talking about.
01:28I mean, it sure would have helped. I mean, it was a tough one. You know, it was like in
01:34and out for us, bank three for them, in and out for us, high bounce three. I mean, you
01:38know, they threw one in at the quarter. I mean, they had it going. They played, they were
01:41really great tonight. They're a great team and they were really great tonight.
01:45All right. So we'll see what happens in the next game tomorrow. Meanwhile, a big surprise
01:50in the NBA last night is Anthony Edwards returns to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He came off the
01:56bench. He had 18 points. The bigger story was that the Wolves beat the Spurs on the road,
02:01104 to 102. Incredible output. Wemby had just 11 points. He did have a triple-double of 15 rebounds
02:10in a postseason record, 12 blocks, but not enough offense for the Spurs late. Julian
02:15Champagne missed a game-winning three at the buzzer and the Timberwolves under pressure,
02:21getting it done. Here's Julius Randle on that.
02:24Just my mentality and approach is being in the best shape, being in the best condition possible.
02:30And fourth quarter, we see what happens. So all of us, like, I think that's one of our superpowers
02:36is being able to continually, like, up the pressure, continue to, like, play with pace
02:42and continue to, like, you know, just wear people down. We got so much depth, too.
02:48We got guys that weren't getting regular minutes playing and stepping up big, like TJ.
02:53Jalen Clark's coming in and giving big minutes, bones, like. So it's like we got a lot of depth.
02:59We didn't have IO today, so it's like we got a lot of depth to be able to wear people
03:03down
03:03and play a certain style of basketball.
03:05Vic, do you look at the fact that you and De'Aaron combined for just 21
03:08and the fact that you would think that's probably not going to happen again in this series,
03:13and so that's going to bode well for you guys going forward?
03:16Is there a silver lining here to as tough as this one might be?
03:19Yeah. I don't know what a silver lining means, but, yeah.
03:26Of course, obviously, we have to be better.
03:28And as I said, it shows up on the stat sheet, but we need to figure out before 48 hours
03:36what we can do better, and I got no doubt that we will.
03:39I mean, it's, uh, I would, I trust us.
03:46Well, NBA's going to have to be a lot better, I would say, in the next game.
03:49Two NBA games tonight.
03:50We'll have a preview of those coming up in just a few minutes.
03:53As I mentioned, Kyle Soppe joining us here on the show.
03:55All right, the Dallas Mavericks have hired a new team president, Masai Ujiri.
04:00He will take over.
04:01He's got 15 years of experience.
04:02He was with Toronto and Denver, and certainly probably do a better job than Nico Harrison
04:08because Nico Harrison gave away a player that's still haunting him today.
04:11The Pistons also extended J.B. Bickerstaff.
04:13That's the news from Detroit yesterday.
04:15All right, let's get to Major League Baseball.
04:17This is significant news for the Tigers and bigger news for Major League Baseball
04:20because it looks like we're going to have a new Cy Young Award winner in the American League.
04:23Tariq Skubal is undergoing surgery to remove loose bodies in his throwing elbow.
04:29Two to three months is the timetable, but who really knows how long it's actually going to be.
04:34Skubal is out.
04:34So is Garrett Crochet.
04:36So is Hunter Brown.
04:37All three of those guys finished top three in the Cy Young Award voting last season.
04:41The news keeps getting better for the Yankees and worse for the Orioles.
04:44The Yankees win 13-1, and they outscored Baltimore 39-10 in the four games.
04:50The Yankees have won 14 out of 16, and the Orioles have lost five games in a row.
04:55How about the offensive output?
04:57Double-digit scoring for the second straight game, including Judge going deep again.
05:01Here's Aaron Boone.
05:02Yeah.
05:04Good to see kind of everyone in on the act, too.
05:07Judge getting us off on a good note there in the first inning.
05:10Thought Baz threw the ball well against us, but able to at least grab a lead there, and
05:16then just some real good finishing at bats the last couple innings.
05:21Right now, the Yankees are playing well.
05:23So are the Cubs.
05:23They've won 14 straight games at Wrigley Field after their 5-4 win over the Reds yesterday.
05:28Michael Conforto hit a pinch-hit walk-off home run in the game.
05:33That scored Pete Crowe-Alexander.
05:35Pete Crowe-Armstrong, excuse me.
05:37And here's PCA after the game on Conforto's home run.
05:41But that's a guy that adds, you know, a certain set of experience.
05:49You know, I just admire the way he takes his at-bats, but it's really hard to sit on the
05:56bench for eight and two-thirds, or nine and two-thirds, eight and two-thirds.
06:04I don't know how innings work, I guess.
06:05But it's hard to sit on the bench for that long and find any sort of, like, sexy feeling
06:13that we like to feel as hitters in the box.
06:15And, you know, that's a pretty good MLB closer, and there's just an incredible at-bat.
06:22So, I mean, having done it myself, having to come off the bench is not easy.
06:27I've had a hard time finding success, and I think it is super-freaking-cool when somebody
06:33can just absolutely end a baseball game in that sort of way after having to be ready
06:39each time that there may be a pinch hit opportunity.
06:43Cubs are surging.
06:44Giants had not been, but they did get a big win yesterday.
06:47Had lost six games in a row going into last night's game against the Padres.
06:50They win three to two.
06:52The story in this one was Trevor McDonald, who the Giants called up to make the start.
06:56He was great.
06:56Seven innings pitched and eight strikeouts.
06:59And this was a tough stretch for San Francisco, who were fading fast.
07:02Here's Tony Vitello on snapping that skit.
07:05The best way I can say it, sum it up, is not a good road trip, not a great start,
07:11not a
07:11great first month.
07:13I know a lot about this organization and the fan base, and there's a lot of fans that
07:19probably at this point have had too much frustration, more than they deserve, or too
07:23much heartbreak.
07:25I feel like we're in debt to them a little bit.
07:27If anything, at least for Giants fans that have young people in their family, we had to
07:33have made up a little ground tonight.
07:34There's a little bit of a trade-off for some of those losses.
07:37Have your son or your nephew or your young player or a player you coach watch that game
07:42tonight.
07:43That is exactly how you want your son or your nephew or anyone you know or anyone you coach
07:48to play baseball is the way he played baseball tonight.
07:51All right.
07:52Impressive comments from Vitello.
07:53Meanwhile, the Dodgers finally scored several runs in a game.
07:58It's been a while.
07:59Eight to three.
07:59They won as road favorites over the Houston Astros.
08:02Those as Shohei Otani hasn't gotten a hit in his last five games.
08:06Yoshinobi Yamamoto picks up the win.
08:07Rays beat the Blue Jays five to one.
08:09They've won four in a row.
08:11Also in hockey, the Hurricanes beat the Flyers in overtime.
08:13They now have a 2-0 lead in the best of seven series.
08:16Vegas takes a 1-0 lead in their series against the Ducks.
08:20They win three to one.
08:21And there's one game tonight in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
08:23It will be Minnesota, Colorado with the Avs leading the series 1-2-0.
08:28Welcome back to Newswire here on Sports Grid covering the prediction market landscape is
08:33Dustin Gawker.
08:33He has a podcast where he discusses it, makes appearances sometimes on CNN.
08:37And also you can download his sub stack to learn a lot more as it feels like we may be
08:43at a point in the prediction market saga that things are heating up just a little bit here.
08:48We may start getting some clarity at least on some of these things.
08:51Dustin, thanks for coming on the show.
08:53Very specifically, the CFTC starting to come under fire here a little bit.
08:57Hey, like what are we doing?
08:59What's the next step?
09:00At least the questions are getting asked.
09:02And this latest one, Dustin, is surrounding the age limit or the minimum age with sport
09:09event contracts.
09:10Apparently a couple of leagues, Dustin, are stepping in and saying, hey, look, we'd like
09:14to make sure the proper age is being used when placing these predictions.
09:20Tell us more.
09:21Yeah, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission is making rules about how prediction markets
09:25are going to work.
09:26And that's going to include a lot about sports event contracts, which is the biggest category
09:30here in the United States.
09:31So as a part of that, anybody in the world could offer comments about how the CFTC should
09:36write rules about this.
09:37And interesting, some leagues did choose to do that.
09:40The NBA and the PGA Tour are the ones that stood out for me.
09:43They asked for minimum age limits on sports event contracts, getting this aligned with what
09:48legal sports betting looks like in most of the country right now.
09:51Right now, you can anybody can use Kalshi and Polymarket and other prediction markets
09:56at 18 and over.
09:58These two leagues have asked for a minimum age of 21 instead of 18.
10:04So to try to protect some vulnerable people who probably shouldn't be betting yet, or if
10:09they should, they should have a little bit more guidance in how that's going to happen.
10:13So the leagues, again, NBA and PGA Tour were the most offered comments.
10:19Other things, they're very concerned about integrity.
10:21We did not get, interestingly, anything from the NFL, which has been kind of loud about this
10:26topic and has been a little hands off on all of this.
10:29But, you know, the leagues see this.
10:31They know prediction markets are here.
10:33They are in.
10:34So, like, you know, we know NHL and Major League Baseball have offered, they've done partnerships
10:39with some of the prediction markets.
10:41And it's all here.
10:42So they're trying to get this in a way that they're comfortable with it.
10:45And one of those things is not having 18 to 21-year-olds betting or trading on prediction
10:50markets.
10:51And we'll see if that's something that the CFTC or other operators eventually implement.
10:56All right, let's move over to one of the prediction market operators.
10:59That is CalSHI, of course, very popular.
11:01They, Polymarket, Crypto.com, and some others.
11:04You know, they'd like to implement some security measures, it looks like here, Dustin.
11:08But this would be, you know, sort of my question to you is that, you know, having Face ID and
11:132FA and all these different things, what exactly does that do for CalSHI?
11:18Does it prevent other people from logging in?
11:20And, you know, certainly I understand Face ID's very popular authentication way of getting
11:26things online, but, you know, simply put, it's usually an option for a lot of apps.
11:30Why is CalSHI going through these measures?
11:32What's the intent here?
11:34Well, I think it dovetails with what we just talked about is that age range, 18 to 20.
11:39You want to be sure that those people are doing it if they're doing it on their own and not
11:43like using a parent's account, using parents' money, things like that.
11:47And again, make sure, CalSHI is also trying to make sure that anybody 18 and under is
11:50absolutely not trading on the platform.
11:52So they rolled out all these measures.
11:55And, you know, I think we've heard and seen more and more stories of parents either being
11:59a little two hands off or even in some cases letting people, letting their kids bet on sports
12:05betting apps, either funding their account or giving them their accounts.
12:08And I think sportsbooks and prediction markets are looking at this and like, what else can
12:11we do?
12:12And CalSHI, again, these are not rules that CalSHI has to follow, but CalSHI is doing
12:15things like doing things Face ID, 2FA to make sure that this is your account, right?
12:22That you're a parent, that a kid is not just going on there and using it and depositing and
12:26betting or trading.
12:28You know, all these things, all these layers, Face ID, like you said, a self-request, an ID
12:33check, if somebody is logging in under their ID, you know, all these things are meant to,
12:38you know, try to create a little safer atmosphere if you're 18 to 20 and stop you from doing
12:44this if you're 18.
12:45Now, again, you should be, they should be stopping you.
12:47They're getting your social security number.
12:49But again, I think some of the stories you've seen over the past year or so is that kids
12:53are using sports betting apps or doing it sometimes when they're not of age, when they're
12:57not 21 and just trying to be more careful about that because, you know, a negative story
13:02where some teenagers are betting on Kalshi and I think we'd get regulation and probably
13:07some clamping down a lot more if we see those stories come to bear.
13:12Dustin, I know at the closing line is where you write your substack and people can certainly
13:16subscribe and read more about exactly the legislation and new things that are going on with prediction
13:21markets.
13:22But there's an upcoming hearing in the Senate that is surrounding integrity.
13:26Is this sort of the same as we've heard in the past or is there any new wrinkles to this
13:31upcoming legislation hearing?
13:33Yeah, we're going to get a Senate subcommittee is going to talk about sports betting integrity.
13:38So this is we're talking about prediction markets.
13:39So there is an angle here.
13:40But with all of the scandals we've seen right across Major League Baseball, NBA, college
13:45basketball, we now have the college quarterback who's been involved, who got in trouble, Texas
13:51Tech, right?
13:52All these things.
13:53And the Senate, obviously, Congress sees all these headlines and they want to get involved.
13:57They want to have a hearing about it.
13:58Hearings often don't matter.
14:00They're often about talking.
14:01But part of this is also the rise of prediction markets is that's a part of the integrity
14:06landscape now, right?
14:07It's not just legal sports betting.
14:09We now have, you know, billions of dollars being traded or wagered on prediction markets.
14:14So this hearing, we'll talk about that.
14:16We'll talk about the intersection of that.
14:18We're going to have the American Gaming Association.
14:19We'll have the Coalition for Prediction Markets, which represents CalShield and Crypto.com and some
14:24of the major U.S. facing operators.
14:27And it'll be interesting to hear what they're doing on integrity and if there are concerns.
14:32The person who is calling this is U.S.
14:34Senator Marsha Blackburn, who is from Tennessee, one of the places where prediction markets have
14:39are coming across some legal troubles.
14:41They were issued a cease and desist.
14:43CalShield has sued the state.
14:45It's like a lot of states.
14:47It's a mess on the legality.
14:48And so it'll be interesting to see if Blackburn, one of the senators from Tennessee, is going
14:53to do anything about this.
14:55Dustin, there's nothing I enjoy more than ending on a silly bet or prediction market
14:59option, which is being offered with the Met Gala, which I have zero interest in whatsoever,
15:05but I suppose some people do.
15:07Yes, I would love to know who's going to show up for the Met Gala, Dustin, and make a prediction
15:11on that on CalShield Polymarket, wouldn't you?
15:15Yeah, I mean, you can bet on the Mets.
15:16I wouldn't bet on the Mets right now, though I guess they've turned things around.
15:20But yeah, you can bet on the Met Gala.
15:21You can bet on who's going to show up, which celebrities, like we saw at the Super Bowl,
15:24who's going to show up to the Super Bowl, what designers are they going to be, are certain
15:28celebrities going to be wearing?
15:29I don't know.
15:30It's nonsense, but we're going to see some engagement about that.
15:34And the Met Gala is a big thing for some people who follow that stuff.
15:38Not you and I, though, Craig.
15:40Definitely not.
15:41The closing line is where you can read more about this and everything else related to prediction
15:45markets.
15:45Thanks, Dustin.
