00:00All right, this is per Tom Pellicero of NFL Media.
00:03A trade has happened.
00:05The Lions are sending running back David Montgomery to the Texans, sources tell the insiders.
00:11What the hell's going on here?
00:13Corresponding moves.
00:14I got to go back and find that segment where we sounded smart.
00:20I love that.
00:21This is, okay, feel very, very good about that.
00:24I think that this is what I had hoped for when the Texans drafted Woody Marks.
00:30I thought, hey, maybe Joe Mixon and Woody Marks can be like this David Montgomery and Jameer Gibbs duo up
00:35in Detroit.
00:36And it turns out that Joe Mixon apparently got bitten by a radioactive spider or something in the offseason.
00:43So that we wouldn't know.
00:45Why not go out and get the actual guy that I modeled my hopes and dreams on, David Montgomery, and
00:52bring him down here?
00:53I like this a lot.
00:55I do, too.
00:56What was the, what they trade for?
00:57How much?
00:57What?
00:58I have not seen.
00:59Nothing yet.
00:59Okay.
01:00Adam Schefter says that this is for a fifth round pick.
01:03Fifth round pick?
01:04That's why we were talking about it earlier and workshopping it.
01:07Because that had been the rumor mill, is that the Lions are looking to move Montgomery for a fifth round
01:12pick.
01:13That was one of the first.
01:13Nick was like, fifth round pick?
01:15No, no, no.
01:15I can do that.
01:16The two things that we immediately thought of when this trade went down at seven in the morning was, could
01:22there be a Trent Williams move coming?
01:24Not for a fifth round pick, obviously.
01:25He's better than that.
01:26But does this Titus thing, moving on from Titus, open up a spot at tackle to where, and by the
01:31way, they can still go do that.
01:33Like, I don't think that, I don't think a David Montgomery deal and a potential Trent Williams deal, if the
01:38Niners indeed are looking to move on from him.
01:39I don't think the Venn diagram of stuff that gets involved in those deals goes over each other at all.
01:45But the other thing was, hey, you're getting a fifth.
01:47The rumor was that they were looking for a fifth for David Montgomery in Detroit.
01:51You need a running back.
01:52He's a running back that is a less expensive option than some of the aisles you were going to be
01:58shopping in for Kenneth Walker.
02:00This probably eliminates Kenneth Walker or Travis Etienne or any of those guys, you know, for anybody in that $10
02:08million to $14 million range.
02:09This also likely eliminates, as we thought, Joe Mixon, right?
02:15Oh, yeah.
02:16The whole, all of the, you know, well, we'll find out, we'll see, we'll talk to him.
02:21That was very frustrating.
02:22That is now very much on the back burner.
02:25Honestly, he's probably gone because that's, what, $8 million that you can end up saving?
02:29Like, it would be irresponsible to not get that at this point with the dude of the caliber of David
02:33Montgomery coming in.
02:34I like that.
02:35Montgomery's got two years left on his deal.
02:36I think it's about $6 million this year and $7 million and change next year.
02:40That's a good price range for him.
02:42Well, and I wouldn't be surprised if there's some kind of an extension involved in it, just like there was
02:46with Joe Mixon.
02:47So we'll see what that is and whether we think it's too aggressive or not.
02:50But that, if you were down on the Titus Howard trade, this hopefully allays that a little bit.
02:57I think that on the sum total of things, as long as the Texans actually rebuild this offensive line somehow,
03:05David Montgomery could have a much better impact on the Texans Super Bowl chances than Titus Howard would have.
03:10Yep.
03:11This is that one-two combo of David Montgomery and Woody Marks behind a solid offensive line, if they can
03:19build it, that's something to get really excited about.
03:23I'm going to call an audible here and just say people probably care more about this trade than our opinion
03:27on the question of the day.
03:29And say that, gentlemen, the floor is yours.
03:31Seth, antibodies to you, my friend.
03:33Antibodies and just buckle up.
03:35This has been the best first day of free agency ever this has been already.
03:38It's not even there yet.
03:40So exciting.
03:40It's a week away.
03:41All right.
03:42We are done.
03:42We are out of time.
03:43Crosstalk brought to you by D&M Auto Leasing.
03:45We'll be back tomorrow at 6 a.m.
03:46Hope to see all of you then.
03:47Reggie Atatula, John Lopez, Figgy Fig.
03:50Buckle up.
03:50Stay tuned because it is popping this morning here on Sports Radio 610.
03:54In the Loop starts now.
03:55You're damn skippy.
03:56In the Loop starts now.
03:57Happy Monday to you.
03:58Happy Thursday at Rodeo.
03:59And happy Nick Casario's making moves, David.
04:02He is making moves.
04:03All right.
04:03You're in the loop.
04:03Let us know how you feel.
04:05713-572-4610 is the base power text line.
04:08Just generally on a Monday, but also about the news of the day.
04:11Obviously, it started earlier on when we found out that Titus Howard was being sent to the
04:16Cleveland Browns for a fifth round pick.
04:19Obviously, the Browns already getting an extension done.
04:21That is going to be one of those.
04:23Hey, move a little bro.
04:24We got other news to deal with because now, I mean, just as of a few minutes ago, if you
04:28did not hear it, David Montgomery, running back, Lions, no more.
04:33He has been traded to the Houston Texans.
04:35Diana Rossini has the details of the trade.
04:37Okay.
04:39The Texans are trading a fourth round pick, a seventh round pick, of which they have two
04:46of each of those, which they did until now, and Juice Scruggs.
04:50Well, that's interesting because nowhere in there did you say a fifth round pick like Adam
04:54Schefter did.
04:55So, this is, we've got a little bit of a, what do you all call them, Nugget Hussie?
04:59Oh, a little Nugget Hussie face on it.
05:01Who's wrong?
05:02The Nugget Hussie face.
05:02Well, I would say that there's an actual human being involved in Rossini's report.
05:06Right.
05:06Which makes it more likely that that's accurate.
05:10You know, just because that would be really cruel to have a human being.
05:14And they're like saying Juice Scruggs got traded, and then you find out, no, it's just for
05:16a fifth round pick.
05:17You don't have to violate your lease, Juice, on wherever it is you're living right now.
05:22Now, that's another storyline angle in this, though.
05:25Like, this is the official admission that the Juice Scruggs draft pick was a failure.
05:29100%.
05:30He's a throw-in in a David Monk.
05:32He's a throw-in for the least valued position in football, the running back position.
05:37Right, right.
05:38He's a throw-in in a trade for, albeit a good running back.
05:40But, sorry, this is in the loop.
05:42No, no, this is great.
05:43No, stick around if you want to, man.
05:44I think that bouncing this around is very interesting.
05:48So, initial reactions, because obviously there's a lot of different places, and we'll let this
05:52unfurl.
05:53Apparently, we are in the splash zone.
05:54Yeah.
05:55I didn't realize that coming in on a Monday, is that things are happening.
05:58You think that, oh, man, the calendar says that the free agency will happen a little
06:01bit.
06:01No, things are happening.
06:02So, we'll keep it locked here.
06:04We'll keep you abreast of anything that happens.
06:06But initial reactions, John Lopez, to David Montgomery, now that he is a Texans running back.
06:11Man, where do I start?
06:12Because my head is just racing.
06:13Pick one.
06:13We got four hours.
06:15And, obviously, Sports Radio 610 is here all day long for all of the coverage of this.
06:20You said splash zone.
06:21I think that's very accurate.
06:22So, I'm just going to spit ball, spit out some of the things that are just racing through
06:27my mind.
06:27Number one, incredible addition.
06:31Absolutely incredible addition.
06:32That's just, like, immediately what I thought.
06:34Number two, somebody still has to block for them.
06:37So, somebody still has to block for these cats.
06:40It's still early, man.
06:41It is still early.
06:42It is still early.
06:43But, you know, there's still no Titus Howard.
06:45Juice Grug's now gone for what it's worth.
06:48You know, I said a few weeks ago, I wouldn't be surprised if they get three new offensive
06:52linemen.
06:53Well, they're going to get four.
06:54They're probably going to have four new faces on the offensive front.
06:58That's another thing that Joe Mixon also is racing through my mind.
07:01Say goodbye to Joe Mixon.
07:02Thank you for your service, especially a year before last.
07:05And, who knows what the detail is there.
07:08And, the other thing is, this is, you know, the Casario offense, as I call it, they're
07:13going to run the ball, run the ball, run the ball.
07:15They're telling us.
07:16How many times have I told you, watch what they do, not what they say?
07:18Yeah.
07:18Watch what they've done.
07:20Just last week, not even a full week ago, Nick Casario was saying, you know, he was pretty
07:25pleased with the way the offensive line performed at the NFL Combine.
07:29Well, now everything changes because it's going to be almost an entirely new offensive line.
07:33And, David Montgomery is a fantastic addition with Woody Marks, so there's that.
07:37You've still got to fix the offensive line.
07:39Joe Mixon is gone, and they are going to run the ball.
07:41This is about what they're going to do offensively.
07:43Not only are they going to run the ball, they're going to run the ball better.
07:46Yeah.
07:47Because we knew that they were committed to the act of running the football, but the
07:51way that they ran the football, even though it was improved, or the offensive line just
07:55generally was improved, it was not good enough.
07:57We talked about this last week where, you know, per DVOA, which of course is just kind
08:03of an all-encompassing metric, they were 29th running the football last year after week
08:07four, and that's when you kind of try to eliminate those first few weeks when they were trying
08:11to figure out what they were doing.
08:12They were not good enough, even though the passing game was, you know, in the top third
08:16of things.
08:17That needed to get better.
08:18And yes, it's going to still need to be on the offensive line, but this increases the
08:23capability of the individual brands, or at least what that running back can add
08:27on top of whatever your offensive line does with technique and talent, the point that
08:31you make is a good one.
08:32You need that talent on the offensive line, and I'm not going to lie, this was a much
08:36needed relief for me hearing this David Montgomery move because it guarantees that they have
08:42to be aggressive because it would be, it would not fit if you go and you add David Montgomery
08:48and then you go and you, you know, bargain barrel shop, or even get rookies and put them
08:54on the offensive line and say that this is going to be what we run behind.
08:57That is not a congruent way of thinking.
09:00So I am now of certainty that they are going to go and get, you know, experienced offensive
09:07line help to make sure that this offensive line is capable of blocking for someone of
09:11the like of David Montgomery, who showed a capability of being really good at running
09:15the football, especially behind a good offensive line.
09:16I mean, I said this before we even got the David Montgomery news.
09:19They have to, they have to, the days of working in the margins are over, you know, the days
09:24of all the Laken Tomlinson's and you know, Cam Robinson's and all that those days are done.
09:30So it does, it does ratchet up that pressure.
09:32I have to believe the way that Nick Casario always plans one or two moves ahead.
09:37I have to believe that he, he still feels pretty good about what's coming on the offensive
09:41line.
09:42I also feel like what this says about the prioritizing of the offense might be the best
09:49thing that, that I feel right now, as these things are happening with Titus Howard and
09:53David Montgomery, they are prioritizing the offense.
09:56They've, the defense is, is off the shelf ready.
09:58They are prioritizing it with that, with David Montgomery.
10:01And with what I feel, as I said, they have to go get a big time offensive lineman, whether
10:05it's Tyler Linderbaum or whomever.
10:07It also, it also feels like they're more capable of it because we were thinking free
10:13agency wise, that they had two positions that they needed to, you know, prioritize to a high
10:17degree, obviously offensive line, one offensive lineman, hopefully interior, but just somewhere
10:21on this offensive line and running back, the running backs been taken off the table by a
10:26trade, right?
10:27And this is a running back that in David Montgomery, 28 will be 29 in this upcoming 2026 season,
10:33still under contract for two more years at a cost, a cap hit rather of 8.4 million and
10:40then 10.2 million, which is below what you would probably be looking at, at the top end
10:46of the running back market.
10:47I think the, the, the value that Spotrack has for someone like a Kenneth Walker, we talk
10:52about Devon HN.
10:53Yeah.
10:54That's 12 million, 13 million.
10:55Right.
10:55It would probably anywhere from nine to those higher ends.
10:59When we talk about the, you know, the cap hit that you would be looking at for those
11:02guys, this is less than that.
11:04Now you have, I think a almost single minded free agency look at offensive line because
11:11David Montgomery is here.
11:13Yes.
11:13And that is going to be only along the offensive line for sure.
11:17At least one big time player you have to acquire there or else, or else, you know, it falls
11:22flat and that's not going to, that's not going to happen.
11:24They don't, as we said, they don't have a choice, but to go get that lineman.
11:27So, uh, just to read, you know, reset again, David Montgomery, um, has been traded to the
11:34Texans Schefter seemingly updating his, his look at the compensation.
11:39So shout out to Diana Rossini for being right.
11:41And not just first in the way that Adam Schefter was lions get a fourth round pick, a seventh
11:46round pick and juice scrugs, uh, the juice scrugs experiment, right?
11:51Obviously how do you view it?
11:53Well, I mean, clearly it's an admission that that was a second round pick, wasn't it?
11:57Yeah, it was, it was juice was a second round pick.
12:00And it was one of the few depth pieces that you had on the interior right now.
12:03Well, so doesn't that also tell you that they're going to lean heavily, even more heavily into
12:07free agency, find something that has been proven or some ones, uh, who have been proven
12:12along the offensive line.
12:13I mean, the money they can make work.
12:15Uh, so I think, you know, when you term in terms of draft, you can still draft a guy, but
12:20clearly, you know, you're admitting you can't draft at the highest level.
12:24So you have to go get those free agents.
12:26Yeah.
12:26I hear you on that from the two, I one, I don't get all the excitement about David Montgomery.
12:31He was what the fifth best they put quarterback.
12:33I'm guessing running back reportedly available.
12:36Um, I don't necessarily view it in the same way, but let's talk about it.
12:41He was pretty good in Detroit, man.
12:43Like that was a good one, two punch.
12:45Yeah.
12:45And now that is the point that I think they're ultimately getting to is that he was kind of
12:49on running back to, to Jameer Gibbs, 17 games last year, only 716 yards.
12:55Um, and when it came to his average yards per attempt was four and a half yards per attempt.
13:01How do you feel about David Montgomery at this point?
13:04We probably should talk about that because I am immediately putting him as your running
13:08back one, but we were talking about a running back one that needs to be of the highest caliber
13:11and above what he marks his capabilities.
13:13I think I look, I I'm, I'm extremely excited to acquire David Montgomery.
13:17We know what he can do.
13:18Yes.
13:1828 working on going on 29 that, that used to be a kind of a factor.
13:23Uh, I don't think it's as big of a factor anymore.
13:25And this is clearly a one, two punch.
13:27Uh, he's a guy that can work with this offense.
13:29They're going to run the ball, the Patriots style offense.
13:32Uh, no, I'm, I'm excited about it.
13:33I think he's absolutely a good fit here.
13:36100%.
13:36Yeah.
13:37I, I, I keep in mind, you know, they went out, this is their, this is their MO.
13:40They needed a running back.
13:42You know, when, uh, two years ago, they went and got Nick Chubb.
13:44Uh, then they got Joe Mixon.
13:45Uh, I mean, Joe Mixon, then Nick Chubb.
13:48And now they're going to, David Montgomery is coming in to fit that role.
13:51This is what they like.
13:53I was looking at, cause interestingly enough, obviously the rumors of, Hey, David Montgomery
13:57could be traded started floating this weekend.
13:59And I was looking at him.
14:01I was looking at Aaron Jones who, you know, with the Vikings, the, the rumors were this
14:05weekend that if he did not get traded, that he would be released.
14:08And I was trying to look at, you know, kind of what, what these guys have been and what
14:13they gave you.
14:14And it is fair to acknowledge that David Montgomery again, in a role as kind of a secondary back
14:19in a one, two punch, um, was not like, he definitely wasn't a chain.
14:24He definitely wasn't Kenneth Walker.
14:25How do you square that with what we've been saying when it comes to what we want in a
14:29running back at the top end?
14:30Well, you have to look at the system as well.
14:32And, and here between the tackles is where I think he, he excels.
14:36Uh, obviously Woody marks yards after, uh, contact is where he excels.
14:40Uh, I think both these running backs can, can fit right in with what they're trying to
14:43do again.
14:45And this is where it gets so interesting.
14:46I mean, you, you, you're, you're painting yourself not into a corner, but you're clearly
14:50showing some of your cards here.
14:52Like the entire league knows, uh, and agents know that you're going to have to go back
14:57and go out and get a couple of free agents, at least one, uh, free agent that is not just
15:01serviceable.
15:02And that's, to me, that's the most key thing.
15:04You have to get a top end center and or tackle a top end right now.
15:09You have to go spend for them because you're not going to, you, you, we've gone down that
15:12road, the margins.
15:13You're not playing in that game anymore.
15:15You have to go get a high end tackle and or center new running back in Houston.
15:19And indeed, um, man, there's a lot of different people looking at it.
15:23He's also, uh, been health, uh, healthy, uh, that factors in.
15:28Okay.
15:28Uh, they're all in on O-line now, two pieces gone already.
15:31Absolutely.
15:32Uh, let's see some other things that came in on the text line.
15:35And there's, I think I'm trying to gauge what the feeling is here on the text line.
15:40There's a lot of excitement.
15:41Um, you know, he's, it has a swarmy run style is what the 18 brings in, which is absolutely
15:45the case.
15:46That's one of the things that we've been talking about generally is the seeming discrepancy
15:50between that stated squarmy, swarmy rather that state of a fast physical profile of team,
15:57the difference between the defense clearly having that in the offense, not seemingly having
16:01all of that.
16:01This is another dude that you will bring into that on the offensive side of things.
16:06Generally, I will say I am early on excited about this deal.
16:10If for no other reason, and this is an aggressive move on the offensive side.
16:15I think you looked at this run, you know, the draft class for running backs and you
16:18go, it is very thin at the top end, especially of the type of player that we're talking about
16:22you really wanting for the Texans.
16:24It is, you know, it is Jeremiah love.
16:27And then the question marks start coming into is Jadarian price a guy that you could have
16:31there.
16:32There's not a lot of guys there.
16:34And then free agency in the running back that started thinning out.
16:37I love the Nick Asario says, we're not going to sit here and fight with you guys in free
16:40agency.
16:41We're going to give up capital like he's done before in various different ways that
16:44have worked and not worked, but we're going to give up capital to make sure that we get
16:48a guy and not leave it up to chance.
16:50That's how you could tell that they were serious about this.
16:52And I see that, that, you know, that, that show up here for this off season, which is exciting
16:56because some of the conversation, the things that they've said, haven't felt like they're
17:00going to be incredibly aggressive.
17:02This is a demonstration, not what they say, but what they do of their seriousness on attacking
17:07offense.
17:07If you're a Texans fan, this is what you should be excited about.
17:10Even beyond the fact that he's really good.
17:12He is.
17:12He's going to be a good fit in this offense.
17:14He's swarmy.
17:15As you mentioned, he's a running back that can be durable, has been durable.
17:19Even beyond that, here's what you should be excited about.
17:22What was the biggest problem with this team last year outside of CJ Stroud's playoffs?
17:26Red zone touchdowns.
17:27It was the red zone touchdowns.
17:28Eight of those last year for David Montgomery.
17:30Yes.
17:30And it was the offense.
17:32Just the offense should, you know, we know how good the defense has been.
17:36Well, they're sitting there going and they're prioritizing the offensive side of the ball.
17:41That is very exciting if you're on the, if you're a fan of this team.
17:44Yeah.
17:45So there you go.
17:46If you're just tuning in, David Montgomery previously played with the Lions is the newest
17:51Texans player traded juice grugs, a fourth round and a seventh round pick to acquire him.
