00:47Yeah, we're talking about, and first of all, shout out to Paul Wall for carving out some time.

01:17The first time I, well, obviously, we're familiar with your work,
01:19but the first time I interviewed you was at Texans training camp, I want to say 16 years ago.
01:24You came by with Mark Vandermeer and I, and we cut it up a little bit.
01:28And you are all about H-Town, so I know you're happy that now you can listen to your sports
01:34all over.
01:34But just for the city of Houston, we got the colors.
01:37We got that H-Town blue, or maybe I should say H-Tine.
01:41But whatever it is, I want to get your thoughts on just being able to be a part of this

02:20but you are a foremost authority on H-Tine and H-Tine Music.
02:25What do you consider as the most H-Tine song of all of them?
02:28Because we go out to these parking lots, we hear all of them at the tailgates.
02:31I'm interested in which one you would put up there.
02:33Well, there's definitely different eras of it.
02:35I mean, you can go back as far as, you know, My Mind's Playing Tricks on Me
02:39or any of the Scarface of the Ghetto Boys songs, you know what I'm saying?
02:42Or if you want to go back to a little more underground, you can go to Street Military
02:47or their kind of music, you know what I'm saying?
02:48So there's all kind of, it just depends on what era.
02:51You know, Still Tiffin' definitely was an all-time classic, you know, for an era,
02:56you know, but to me, you know, Fat Pat, Tops Drop or any little Kiki song, of course,

03:03And it just depends on where you're at, but to me, I would have to say

03:10Is that the one that turns you up most for Texans Game Day?

03:16I think so because it's a sing-along, you know, everybody knows the words,
03:20you know what I'm saying, you get hype on it.
03:21But, I mean, like I said, you know, I might go through my little season of jamming that
03:26and then I might be like, all right, it's time for some Big Hawk.
03:29And you put on some Big Hawk and that's going to get me wired up to it.
03:32And that's okay, it's time for some Zero, you know what I'm saying?
03:35Or now it's time for some Slim Thug.
03:36So I got all my different various eras.
03:39And, you know, it just kind of depends.
03:41You know, Mona Leo killing it, so you put on some Everything Pinker,

03:51I got to ask you, man, something very important.
03:54We lost something super special, the Houston, as of recent, Cam Houston.
03:59We lost Cam Houston and we lost the address, man.
04:02What was your favorite moments from those two legendary spots in the city?
04:08I mean, you know, I definitely had a lot of concerts at both of those places,
04:12a lot of album release parties, you know what I'm saying?
04:14A lot of times people would come to town to host parties
04:17and I'd go hang out with them, you know, different celebrities.
04:19So I definitely got some good memories, you know what I'm saying?
04:22But I think my biggest memories are the ones with my homies just getting ready,
04:26going up there or leaving from there after we had a great time, you know,
04:30we headed home.
04:31So, you know, shout out to the whole club life in Houston,
04:34everybody getting it in.
04:35And, you know, it's just kind of just shifted a little bit.
04:37It's kind of like, you know, all about restaurants now, you know what I'm saying?
04:40But it's still popping.
04:41It's still going down.
04:42So I look forward to seeing what the next era ushers in, you know what I'm saying,
04:46what the new places are.
04:47It's like wide open right now for all the new spots that might, you know, open up.
04:51All right, Paul, I want to talk Texans, man.
04:53I mean, one of the reasons you like listening to us
04:55and you're happy about us flipping the 95.7 is you get to listen to sports,
05:00sports talk.
05:01You get to join us occasionally.
05:03You know these guys.
05:04You've been around them a long time.
05:05What are your expectations and hopes for this team
05:08from what you've been seeing and hearing?
05:10Well, my expectations and my hopes are two different things.
05:13You know what I'm saying?
05:15You know, my hopes, of course, we go all the way.
05:17But my expectation is that there's going to be some stumbles, some roadblocks.
05:21I look forward to seeing, you know, how they handle them, though.
05:23You know what I'm saying?
05:24I'm definitely super excited, I think, the most about Tank Dale.
05:28You know, I love watching him play, him and CJ together.
05:32You know, they're just so dynamic, you know.
05:34And it's just like lightning, you know what I'm saying,
05:38when they're on the field together.
05:39And I look real forward to that.
05:41You know, also, CJ cutting off his hair.
05:44I'm excited about that.
05:45It's like a new era of CJ Stroud.
05:47I can't wait to see what he brings.
05:48You know, the defense is looking like, oh, Jadavion Clowney back.

05:53The defense is going to be, oh, my God.
05:56I mean, we got a lot to look forward to.

05:59But at the same time, my expectations are, you know,
06:02or maybe not as, you know, I don't expect them to go all the way
06:06just because they haven't.
06:07You know, division, yeah, I think I expect us to win the division.

06:12But my hope, of course, is, yeah, nobody gets hurt.
06:16That's my hope right there.

06:26Like, you absolutely carry yourself with all of that Houston feeling to you.
06:29And I don't know if you saw CJ Stroud.
06:31Our guy was getting clowned on the Internet for the way that, you know,
06:34he walked up to the facility.
06:35Obviously, that's not the most important thing.
06:37Him throwing touchdowns is.
06:38But if you had to give him, like, a little bit of game in order to make sure
06:42that our quarterback has that Houston swag, like, what are you giving
06:45to the quarterback?
06:47Well, to me, I think CJ got all the swag in the world.
06:50You know, he's unique, he's himself, and that's the most important.
06:53You know, a lot of people, they put too much emphasis on the entrance to the ring,
06:58and they're not worried about what they do when they get in the ring.
07:00You know, and I'm not a big entrance guy.
07:02You know, those are two separate things.
07:04You can kill the entrance and then get killed in the ring.
07:06So I'm not worried about how he walk into practice.
07:08I'm worried about how he play on the field.
07:10So me personally, I admire CJ a lot, especially when he said he's going to stop cursing.
07:15And that really lit a fire under me to kind of cut back on my cursing.
07:18You know what I'm saying?
07:18So big salute to CJ Stroud.
07:21You know, I know my homeboy, Goo, always tell me, nah, he need to start cussing again.
07:27When he was cussing, that's when he was playing good.
07:29But, you know, nah, I personally, you know, I'm inspired by him.
07:32You know, he's a real leader on the field and off.
07:34You know, having conversations with him.
07:36You know, he's a big leader.
07:38So a big salute, big shout out to CJ Stroud.
07:41Yeah, so speaking of not cussing, I want to kind of go back to your album with Chameleon there, man.
07:47You didn't cuss in that album, right?
07:49Was that kind of like a cleaner album, if I'm not mistaken?
07:54Yeah, definitely was.
07:54You know, I've got a few albums out there that are clean like this.
07:57Sometimes it's easier when you're mixing them and editing them.
08:00Sometimes, you know, if you have cuss words, you know, they might play the wrong one on the radio by
08:05accident.
08:06You don't want to get somebody in trouble.
08:07And then they're second guessing next time you give them a song or next time they play one of your
08:11songs.
08:11Also, you know, we have a big fan base that's behind bars.
08:15And if your album is squeaky clean, then it can get, you know, downloaded in jail.
08:21And if it's not squeaky clean, then it is not available.
08:24So, you know, it's just a little easier.
08:25And, you know, to me, my mom always just inspired me to keep it clean.
08:29You know, just in my daily walk, oh, in my music.
08:33Just because, you see, I always wanted to, you know, stir up some creativity in me.
08:37So, you know, that's kind of where that came from.
08:39You know what I'm saying?
08:40Just trying to keep it a little clean.
08:41And it's, you know, of course, I'm grown, but we have a wide range of people that listen to us.
08:47Sometimes they might listen to us in the office.
08:49Sometimes it might be some corporate.
08:51Sometimes it might be a younger crowd.
08:53And you don't want to turn somebody off to your music.
08:55You don't want to say something to put your foot in your mouth.
08:57So we try to keep it clean.
08:58Yeah, so I wanted to set you up with this question.
09:02I'm sure you get this all the time.
09:03Have you and Chameleon there ever thought about making another album together or something?
09:08I know he don't really rap that much now.
09:10But have y'all ever thought about connecting again?
09:13He's like semi-retired.
09:15I think that's due to how much money he got.
09:17He don't need the music.
09:18You know what I'm saying?
09:19He got so much money.
09:21You know, man, I always joke, oh, man, he's going to have to fall off before he get back in
09:25the studio.
09:26Because, man, he got so much money, he don't need to make the music.
09:29But just knowing him, he does have a passion for it.
09:32He also doesn't, you know, he's a huge advocate for artists' rights.
09:36And the way the music industry is set up is not set up in favor of other artists.
09:41So he's not, you know, he's not in favor of, you know, people getting taken advantage of.
09:45So, you know, but that's also, you know, stirred up some inspiration for him to try to create a new
09:52way.
09:52You know what I'm saying?
09:53So he's, you know, he's actively trying to create a way for artists to get their due, you know, whatever
09:59it may be.
10:00You know, but whether it comes to me and him together in the studio, I definitely think you'll see that.
10:05Every now and then we do.
10:06I try not to take advantage of, you know, his generosity, you know what I'm saying?
10:10But any time I ever ask him to do a song, he always does it.
10:13And obviously, if he calls me for anything, I'm there no matter what it is, period.
10:18The answer is going to be yes.
10:20You know, will we ever do an album together?
10:23Maybe, perhaps.
10:24But being it has been so long since we have, you know, there's a lot of expectations that are linked
10:30to our previous album.
10:32You know what I'm saying?
10:32So, you know, I don't mean like in the quality.
10:36I just mean in maybe the subject matter, the topics.
10:38You know, also when we put out Get Your Mind Correct, you know, we were day in, day out growing
10:43up together.
10:43So we were, you know, meshed together from, you know, five, six years old, you know.
10:49So there was a whole huge culmination of us being together where we really just meshed together.
10:54Where now we've, you know, kind of walked our own paths.
10:56And even though the destination might be the same, our paths have been, you know, a little bit different.
11:01So when we get back in the studio together for a full-length album, I don't know if it's going
11:05to sound the way, you know, the first one did.
11:08It might still be jamming, but in a new way, a new light.
11:11And that might, you know, we don't want to let the fans down if they're expecting it to sound, you
11:15know, a certain way and it doesn't sound that way.
11:17So I don't know.
11:18But I'm absolutely open to it and down no matter what the situation is.
11:23If it's involving a committee in there, to me, the answer is going to be yes.
11:26If you do, you got to bring in Mr. Manhattan, too, just for old times.
11:30Oh, for sure, man.
11:31Yeah, for sure.
11:32Hey, just one or two more for here, Paul.
11:34We know you got some obligations up there in New York.
11:36But I got to ask you about this connection that really started about four or five years ago.
11:41The Texans didn't really used to embrace Houston.
11:44You know, it was just sort of separate from the roots of Houston, from the colors and the slabs and,
11:50you know, the H-Town pride and all that.
11:52How important do you think that was for just the community at large?
11:56I mean, you've been there since day one, but you probably also experienced just that transition.
12:01Oh, absolutely.
12:02I mean, I went to a Texans game with my boy Papa Joe in box on my wedding day.
12:07The day I got married, they came and kidnapped me and took me to a Texans game.
12:12I believe it was against the Colts and the Texans lost, for the record.
12:16But I won when I got married.
12:18But, you know, the Texans lost.
12:20And I definitely had my share of downs and downs and downs and then finally some ups, you know, in
12:27my personal relationship.
12:28But I think it's not the ownership or any of that.
12:31You know, I don't think it's the team.
12:33I think it's just some of the staff.
12:35They just were disconnected or the people that were in charge of making those calls.
12:38They were kind of disconnected with, you know, the Houston culture.
12:41You know what I'm saying?
12:42And as the kind of staff has had some turnover, they've been a lot more open to it.
12:46You know, I remember being – I'm friends with Reggie Bush and I remember being on the sideline with him
12:51with my son,
12:52taking him to a game, and we got kicked out the stadium.
12:55Even though I'm like a personal guest to Reggie Bush, I had all the credentials and everything,
12:58and they basically were just like, hey, you can't be here.
13:00And I'm like, where am I supposed to go?
13:02And they're like, well, you can't be here.
13:04I don't know.
13:04But, you know, it is – and it's tough sometimes when you're like – I'm a real fan.
13:09I'm not like a trendy fan or I show up, you know, when we win.
13:13Of course I'm going to be there when we win.
13:14But, you know, I'm a huge, real fan of Houston sports teams, especially the Texans.
13:19And so, you know what I'm saying, when stuff like that happens, it's very disheartening.
13:23But, you know, I don't hold it against the organization at all because knowing, you know,
13:26the ownership and upper management, I know it's not them at all.
13:29They absolutely show their love to the Houston culture and always have, always have.
13:35You know, it's just, you know, sometimes in between it's the – sometimes, you know,
13:39the people who are in charge of maybe the entertainment or maybe other things, maybe, you know.
13:43But as there's been staff turnover, they've definitely embraced, you know, the Houston culture a lot.
13:48And it means a huge amount to the fans because we feel included.
13:52And the Texans fans, you know, as are all the Houston sports fans, are diverse.
13:57They're not just, you know, one type or one genre.
14:00You know, it's a wide range of music listeners and lovers, a wide range of economic backgrounds,
14:08geographic backgrounds.
14:09Some people drive all the way from the country.
14:11Some people driving from down the street, you know.
14:14So, it's a huge, diverse crowd in there because it truly represents Houston, you know.
14:20So, you know, seeing it, it's all-inclusive now, you know, it's very encouraging.
14:25And when you go to a Texans game, it's a party now.
14:28It's a for-sure party.
