00:00On a day like this, Browns and OTAs, some Myles Garrett talk that's driving people nuts.
00:06I think it's a perfect day to talk to Daryl Ryder.
00:08Hello, D.
00:09Hello, boys.
00:10How are we?
00:11We are well.
00:12How are you?
00:13I'm okay.
00:14All right.
00:14Good.
00:14I'm about to enjoy this beautiful, sunny, and 70-degree day we're having.
00:18Yeah?
00:19All right.
00:19That's good to hear.
00:20OTAs rolling right along.
00:22How critical are these sessions for a new coaching staff?
00:27I'd say pretty critical.
00:30They're doing all the installation work on both sides of the ball.
00:33More offense than defense because they're not changing too much up on the defensive side of things.
00:41But offensively, it's all new, right?
00:44And they still have to figure out, is it going to be Deshaun Watson?
00:47Is it going to be Sugarer Sanders as a starting quarterback?
00:49So, yeah, this is a pretty important time of year for the Browns right now.
00:53What do we – I just – like, I look at this thing.
00:57We talk about, you know, Miles Garrett left and right trying to figure this thing out.
01:02Daryl, tell me what it means to you, the whole Miles Garrett story, and is it not much more?
01:08I mean, I think we can all live with the fact that he's not there because he doesn't have to
01:12be there.
01:12But doesn't the story feel like it's a little bit more than that?
01:16Well, I just think that as long as it continues to be mostly radio silence between Garrett and the new
01:27coaching staff,
01:28it's something to keep an eye on.
01:30Now, his absence from OTAs is not abnormal behavior.
01:34He typically shows up to one OTA, and that's usually about it.
01:40He hasn't showed up to any as far as I know right now, and he hasn't had a face-to
01:46-face with Todd Munkin as far as I know.
01:48So – and because of what happened last year with the trade request, of course, the Browns opened the checkbook
01:56and, you know,
01:58gave him a big pay raise and contract extension, it's still going to be out there.
02:02And even with the no-trade clause, that doesn't mean he can't be moved because he certainly can.
02:07It just means that it'll be Miles Garrett dictating where he would ultimately end up should that be the case.
02:13So as long as all those things remain out there, combine that with the contract payment structure adjustment,
02:22which did not really need to be made but was made this offseason with no real tangible explanation other than
02:29we just did it for the sake of doing it
02:31because that's what we felt like doing, right?
02:36And also that's what makes it easier for the Browns to trade Miles Garrett after June 1st.
02:41Yeah, that conversation is going to be out there.
02:46I certainly understand those that might be annoyed by it, those that might be over it,
02:53but the fact remains – and I maintain this – they should have traded him last year.
03:02The timeline, I should say.
03:06Unfortunately, Miles is in the prime of his career.
03:09He wants to win football games.
03:10He wants to win playoff football games.
03:12He wants to play to win Super Bowls, right?
03:17Unfortunately, he's got a great defense here in Cleveland, but the offense is in a rebuild and there's no quarterback
03:23here.
03:24And you're pretty much dead in the water without a quarterback.
03:28Now, I think the Browns are going to win some games this year.
03:31I think they'll be better than they were last year.
03:33I think Andrew Barry, on paper, has done a good job the last two years getting some young players in
03:41here who can play the sport at a high level.
03:44But the timelines are still misaligned, okay?
03:49The Browns are probably maybe a year or two – I hate to say it – maybe three, right?
03:57Which gets you closer to the new stadium more so than the prime of Miles Garrett's career.
04:04So, I will not be shocked if he is traded, but also have to take Andrew Barry at his word
04:16that he has no intention of trading Miles Garrett.
04:18He said it last year.
04:20He didn't.
04:21And he extended him.
04:22He said it repeatedly this year.
04:26And, well, the contract got adjusted as far as the payment structure goes.
04:31And that's, I think, what set off all the alarm bells.
04:34Now, the radio silence.
04:35That just adds another layer to this cake.
04:38And, well, that's kind of what we have to eat this offseason.
04:42Darryl, I always hesitate at the thought of trading big-time talent.
04:48And, obviously, Miles is big-time talent.
04:50He's Hall of Fame talent.
04:52And, no disrespect to Joe Thomas, he is, I think, the best player they have had since 1999.
05:00Joe Thomas is in the Hall of Fame.
05:02Okay?
05:03If he retired right now, he'd go in the Hall of Fame.
05:06Yes.
05:06Oh, 100%.
05:07Yeah, he could walk away today.
05:09He's still a first ballot Hall of Famer, no question asked.
05:11I agree.
05:12That said, I agree with what you laid out about this situation.
05:18If you don't have your quarterback, you didn't win a lot with him in the last two years because it
05:23takes more than a great defensive end.
05:26And if you could put some things on a path more long-term and the right deal presented itself, I
05:34don't know how Andrew Barry would turn that down.
05:36Do you?
05:36Well, I think the irony of the situation, maybe it's not even irony, to me it is, maybe the bittersweet
05:44portion of the situation, right, is that because the Browns are not losing their way into the first overall pick
05:53next year.
05:54Let's make that very, very clear.
05:55They're not tanking and they don't have the worst football team in the NFL.
06:01They're going to win seven, eight, nine games this year.
06:03I'm convinced of that.
06:06And that's even with the whole quarterback thing being up in the air.
06:10Because of the defense?
06:11Yeah, well, that and the offensive talent that's been added.
06:14And remember, last year, with an offense that averaged 16.4 points per game, they could have won seven games
06:22easily.
06:23You figure if the special teams actually showed up against the Jets,
06:26and you figure if the defense could actually start Carson Wentz from walking 80 yards down the field in London.
06:32Okay?
06:33That gets you to seven wins.
06:34And that is with an unwatchable offense.
06:38All right?
06:39So, yeah, I think they're going to win seven to nine games this year.
06:44Maybe the football gods smile upon them and they win ten.
06:47I don't know.
06:48I'm not willing to go that far.
06:49But I can't sit here and completely rule that out.
06:54But they're not going to lose their way into the pick that they're going to need to draft the quarterback
07:02next year.
07:04So, the only way they're going to be able to do it is with draft picks.
07:09And really, Miles Garrett is the player that could get you the draft picks you need to make that trade.
07:15The risk is you're trading a bona fide Hall of Famer and the best player that you have ever had
07:22in the last at least 50 years.
07:27And that's a lot of respect to the players that have come and gone over 50 years.
07:31But Miles is just that great.
07:34And then you better get it right with the quarterback.
07:39And where I get nervous with that thought is when have the Browns ever gotten it right with the quarterback
07:44in this, you know, this expansion post-1999 era, right?
07:50The answer you're looking for is never.
07:51That's why they've had 42 of them.
07:54So, that is – that's not a comfortable spot to be in either.
07:58So, but yeah, I mean, the irony is it might take Miles Garrett to put you in a position to
08:05get the franchise quarterback you need.
08:08And the ugly truth about the Miles thing is look at how many losing seasons the Browns have had with
08:19him.
08:20And look at how non-competitive they have been with him.
08:26I mean, he had six sacks against the New England Patriots.
08:28They lost by 30.
08:30Think about that for a second.
08:31One of the most dominating performances you'll ever see in a football game.
08:36They lost by 30.
08:38I don't know how you square that.
08:40Yeah.
08:40Hey, Darrell, let me ask you this.
08:41I just want to make sure that you're saying with Miles Garrett, you think there's – with – you're saying
08:47that they're a better team going into next year regardless of Miles Garrett.
08:52How's that sound?
08:53Well, if you – I'll say this.
08:55If they do trade Miles Garrett, my win total is going to go down.
08:58Okay.
08:59For this kind of season.
09:00Let's just say they keep Miles Garrett.
09:01Why do you think they're a better team?
09:02Well, I think they're a better team because they have a – in my view, a more versatile offensive line,
09:13okay, with the players that they have added up front.
09:19I just – I think that they are deeper there.
09:23Spencer Feneau, obviously, first-round pick.
09:27They bring in Zion Johnson.
09:30They bring in Elton Jenkins.
09:31They bring back Tevin Jenkins.
09:34They trade for Titus Howard, right?
09:38You have DeJuan Jones, who, by the way, is just a mountain of a human being, right?
09:42And hopefully he can stay healthy.
09:43That's very large.
09:44Yeah, I mean, that's really the only problem with him is his health.
09:47It's not talent.
09:48He's a good player, but he just, unfortunately, is never available because he's hurt, right?
09:53Parker Brailsford, we'll see what he can do as far as competing for that starting job.
09:58Zach Zinner has contributed.
10:01KT Leveston, I think, is better suited inside than outside at tackle.
10:08So there's some depth there on the offensive line.
10:10And then you look at the receiver group, right?
10:12This isn't just, you know, take Jerry Judy out of the play and, well, you've pretty much kiboshed what little
10:18passing game the Browns have.
10:19Now you have Devin Boston and Casey Concepcion in that mix.
10:23Isaiah Bond showed flashes last year.
10:26And then, obviously, we saw the outstanding rookie season that Harold Fannin Jr. had, right?
10:33So now you've got, you know, five legit targets there to throw.
10:38And I haven't even mentioned Sid Tillman or any of the other guys that will be competing for a job
10:44in training camp.
10:45And then you look in the backfield.
10:46Quinn Sean Judkins looks like he's healthy, just watching him and the work that he's been doing during OTA.
10:52So that's a great sign.
10:53Dylan Sampson catches the ball outstanding out of the backfield.
10:57And we've seen some bursts from him.
10:58And so, yeah, I mean, if they can just get average quarterback play this year, yes, they are going to
11:07move leaps and bounds better and more fun to watch.
11:10Look, yesterday at practice, they were scoring touchdowns.
11:13Okay?
11:14I'm not used to seeing touchdowns being scored during Browns practices.
11:19So, if we're being honest about it.
11:21In fact, I had to check and make sure I was in Berea, Ohio.
11:24I thought maybe I had, like, time warped to another NFL team or something like that.
11:28So, no.
11:29I mean, this offense that Todd Munkin is putting in, it looks really exciting.
11:34The concepts that he's drawing up and that looks really exciting.
11:39And if these quarterbacks can execute it, whether that's Deshaun Watson, whether that's Jadro Sanders, I think it's going to
11:46be a much more fun team for fans to watch this fall.
11:52Daryl, you sounded slightly optimistic.
11:55Kind of fun.
11:56We're going to talk about that coming up.
11:57Thank you, bud.
11:58It is the spring, Jeff.
12:00It is the season of optimism.
12:02Yeah, I guess it is.
12:03Until they trade Miles Garrett.
12:05Yeah, well, there is that.
12:07Daryl, thanks, buddy.
12:08You bet, guys.
12:09Have a great day.
