00:00Welcome to Florida.
00:02We're having a party!
00:04Home to theme parks, golden tans and 400,000 Brits.
00:08This one is the one with the view.
00:10Wow!
00:11Who've made the Sunshine State their new home.
00:14I feel blessed every single day.
00:16I'm living the American dream. I definitely am.
00:18They've swapped drizzly winters and gas bills for new careers
00:22and seemingly endless fun in the sun.
00:25Two, one, yay!
00:28Get it right and life in Florida can be like a dream come true.
00:32I get to drive a convertible. It's fabulous.
00:35But getting here and staying here takes hard work.
00:38Good job, good job. Keep it going team!
00:40Grit.
00:41Bah!
00:43And determination.
00:44The glamorous side of living in Florida.
00:46These are the Brits who've made their own Escape to Florida.
00:54Today on Escape to Florida...
00:56We'll put the tablecloths on here, the red, white and the blue.
00:59Joanne's on the hunt for an eligible bachelor
01:01by hosting her own British Singles Night.
01:04Oh, you're from Watford? One of my best friends was from Watford.
01:07Fitness instructor Andreas has grand plans to expand his boot camp empire.
01:12Two, one, go! Nice, guys!
01:17And fellow entrepreneur Holly starts a costume-making business
01:20with a little help from her pals.
01:23Oh, Rob!
01:24What?
01:26Look at the sparkles.
01:28Tassels!
01:35The city of Tampa on Florida's Gulf Coast is home to many a Brit.
01:41Including 50-year-old mum of two, Joanne from Hull,
01:45who came to the States 23 years ago.
01:48Are you making tea for yourself?
01:50Do you want one?
01:51Yes.
01:54When I first moved here, I was a cast member at Disney.
01:57We weren't making a lot of money.
02:00It was a huge opportunity to work there,
02:03but the reality was we were broke.
02:07Joanne now works as an estate agent
02:09with a side hustle developing properties.
02:11She lives in Tampa but also co-owns this party pad in Orlando
02:16with fellow Brits Jane and husband Billy.
02:23Why do we have a fridge and it's full
02:26but there's not any actual milk or anything in here?
02:28We have a very, very close friendship.
02:31This was probably one of the best things I've ever done.
02:34Making the decision to buy this place.
02:36Just the ability to come out here anytime we want.
02:38Jane, I need a cup of tea!
02:40I can't believe we don't have any milk!
02:42My life can be very crazy and chaotic.
02:44I could be working till midnight most days in Tampa.
02:47And then I know that on Friday I'm done with work for the week.
02:52I can come out to the condo and it could be a park day.
02:56It could be just chilling at the resort.
02:57Let me, let me...
02:58They met seven years ago
02:59and now these best buddies work together
03:02at the real estate agency too.
03:04So Jane's got her single pals' interests at heart.
03:07So how's the dating apps coming along?
03:10Horrible.
03:11I think I pretty much decided at this point
03:13that I'm completely done with them.
03:16I have been married and divorced four times
03:20and they were American.
03:21I don't know at this point if that is, you know,
03:23really because of the American factor.
03:26Certainly with a couple of my relationships
03:28the cultural differences were very, you know, very evident.
03:32She goes wrong with Americans
03:33because Americans don't tend to get our humour.
03:37This is probably the longest I've been single for a while
03:40and, you know, especially as you get older
03:42it gets a little bit more challenging.
03:44Being single at 50 is definitely not for the faint of heart.
03:48To try and help, Jane wants Joanne to host
03:50a Brits in Florida singles night
03:52and Handley, just ten minutes away in Claremont,
03:56is the perfect place to host it.
03:58A local expat pub where Joanne is a regular.
04:02So many British people in this area
04:04that are just wanting to come out and just meet other Brits.
04:08Yeah.
04:08Hey, if this pulls up, we could actually maybe make a monthly thing.
04:12Can you imagine?
04:15First task, secure the venue
04:17and that means getting pub manager Anne on board.
04:21Anne, we have a fever.
04:24Jane's on a mission to help me find a guy.
04:28So Jane came up with this bright idea to do a Brits dating event
04:33and we were wondering if it's possible for us to host it here.
04:37Of course.
04:38Look how easy that was.
04:41Venues sorted, they now need someone to help run the event.
04:44Jane can't be there due to work commitments
04:46and Joanne needs to mingle, but they've got just the bartender in mind.
04:51Chris.
04:52Mm-hmm.
04:53We are thinking about doing a British dating event.
04:56Oh, okay.
04:57We think you would be a fantastic person to maybe help us MC the event.
05:01Yeah.
05:01Welcome people in.
05:02Absolutely.
05:03All right then.
05:03I'm up for it.
05:05I've done MC work on the cruise ships and everything.
05:07All right, Jane.
05:07Well, you just got replaced and it looks like Chris is going to be my right-hand girl.
05:11Okay.
05:11Perfect.
05:11So we'll be back once we've got everything locked in.
05:15Chris is going to be absolutely perfect for this.
05:17That gives me the opportunity to be able to mix and talk
05:20while he oversees the MCing.
05:22So we can decorate this area.
05:24Yeah.
05:25And then maybe we'll do a couple of the middle tables for food.
05:27But there's always that risk that nobody shows up.
05:30Nobody turning up for you.
05:32Come on.
05:33You're the main attraction.
05:34This is it.
05:35I'm not getting my hopes up.
05:46An hour north of Orlando, New Smyrna Beach is also a popular destination for Brits coming
05:51to Florida.
05:54It's now home to former squatty turned outdoor fitness coach Andreas from Southampton.
06:00Every day what I like to do is I like to go and jump in my ice bath.
06:05It's really good for my recovery post-training.
06:08Woo!
06:13He moved to the States four years ago for love, which didn't last.
06:17But his love of the Sunshine State did.
06:19I believe that I can have a better life in Florida because of the opportunities here.
06:25It's just a better place to own a business, particularly my business in the outdoor fitness world.
06:30Woo!
06:30It's just much nicer doing it over here with the weather, with the beaches.
06:34But it was a hard decision leaving Britain.
06:36My daughter Jennifer spends half of her life in the UK with her mum and she spends half
06:41of her time in the US and me.
06:42Jennifer is just amazing.
06:45She's going to be 13 soon.
06:46I was only 23 when she was born.
06:48I love her so much.
06:49This is when she was doing some deadlifts when she was in the army gym.
06:54She could probably deadlift more than most people now to be honest.
06:59Andreas was a physical training instructor in the army, which he's continued into the civilian
07:04world, working 50 hours a week as a health and fitness coach.
07:08I probably have about five, six hours a day of clients on top of my bootcamp business.
07:15And I have a weight loss programme.
07:17I've helped hundreds of people all over the world to lose weight.
07:20I love the feeling of helping people.
07:26It's before 8am on a soon to be scorching Saturday morning.
07:31And in Daytona Beach, Andreas has a very special event in store.
07:35We are setting our bootcamp on the beach today.
07:38It's a big event.
07:38We have people coming down from multiple bootcamps.
07:40Yeah, it's going to be fun.
07:42Is it safe?
07:43Anyone there?
07:45Okay.
07:47Andreas is expecting around 50 clients to join his bespoke beach-based training session,
07:53a far cry from his previous post.
07:57I joined the army when I was 18 years old.
07:59I deployed to Afghanistan when I was 19 years old.
08:02And that was an eye-opener to cope with all the pressures of what the army put you under as
08:07a young guy.
08:08It was a lot.
08:09And then I left.
08:09And I just struggled to get a job that I was good at.
08:13But in the end, I managed to set up a bootcamp.
08:16Which he's now brought to Florida.
08:19And with such a large group of customers, Andreas needs it to go well today.
08:25So, he's drafted in one of his other coaches, Sammy.
08:30So, first of all, we're going to do a warm-up.
08:32You can take the balls.
08:33I'll take the body weight one, all right?
08:35And long-time boot camper turned fitness coach, Mary.
08:38Hey, Mary.
08:40He wants to build on the successful set-up he's created for himself and his daughter.
08:46Where I am now in life is like a very stark contrast to where I was ten years ago.
08:50I was living in the bedsit.
08:52I was divorced and a single dad.
08:54I just left the army.
08:55I had no money.
08:56So, to be here now, I'm a business owner.
08:58I have a team now of people that coach bootcamps for me as well.
09:02And me and my daughter have a wonderful life over here.
09:05But soon, he hits a problem.
09:07So, you can be on that side or you can be on this side?
09:09Oh, okay.
09:10So, we can't be in this bit here, no?
09:12It's 8.50.
09:14The class is about to start.
09:15And having arranged his arsenal of kit with military precision,
09:19it has to be moved because cars need access to this part of the beach.
09:24This is a drive-on beach and we can't be in that lane.
09:27So, thankfully, the tide is out.
09:28So, we're going to push the guys out this way.
09:30Because of the driving lanes, we just need to pick up some of the equipment
09:33and just move it that way.
09:36Andreas needs to shift the kit quickly as he may look unprofessional
09:39if the start of the session is delayed any longer.
09:51Over in central Florida, Holly from Northampton
09:54is also working hard to stay in the Sunshine State.
09:59Ooh, it's wicked hot today.
10:01Florida in the summer, baby.
10:03She moved here 19 years ago after her A-levels
10:07to do the Disney College program.
10:09And now Holly has a full-time bar job as well as two other side hustles.
10:13Look at all the old machines. I know.
10:16Like, they don't make... like, there's any bar.
10:18Working essentially three full-time jobs,
10:20I will do whatever it takes to make sure
10:22that I have the abilities to live the life that I want.
10:25I'm not afraid of hard work.
10:27Holly's second job is performing as a historical character,
10:31which she dreams of doing year-round,
10:33alongside boyfriend and professional jouster Aidan
10:36at outdoor festivals known as Renaissance Fairs.
10:41The Renaissance Fairs, it's a fantasy world.
10:44Everyone is doing these creative things.
10:46There is shopping, there is entertainment.
10:48You don't worry about real life.
10:49You can just immerse yourself completely in this creative bubble.
10:53But playing a historical character weekends
10:55doesn't give Holly the income she needs
10:57to quit her day job and travel around the country.
11:00So she set up her own footwear business.
11:03I own the Bruja Boutique,
11:06a medieval shoe and boot company.
11:10So what are we at? That's three pairs of boots now so far?
11:13I think so.
11:14My business partner, Melinda and I,
11:15have both put pretty much our entire life savings into doing this.
11:19So it has to work.
11:22Now Holly's expanding her business to include clothes
11:26by making unique costumes like the ones she wears at fairs.
11:30What are you thinking about this dress?
11:32I'm thinking that we're going to let the fabrics talk to us
11:34and see whether we find something that inspires us.
11:37Oh look, we can make a dress out of a bingo card.
11:39We can make a really nice bingo dress.
11:41Look at me, racking up to best of British for bingo night on a Monday.
11:45I receive a lot of compliments on my dresses
11:47and a lot of people ask me where they can get them.
11:49So I've decided to branch out and maybe start selling them off
11:52on a commission base off the website as one-offs and things like that.
11:55It will help bring in that little bit extra.
11:57With boyfriend Aidan working away,
12:00friend Shelly and father Rob are helping her to choose the fabric
12:03for her first dress to sell.
12:06You can make a skirt.
12:08I could make a skirt.
12:08Right, we should probably concentrate
12:09because we are definitely like on a tangent right now.
12:12Shelly is my best friend.
12:14We live about five, ten miles apart from each other.
12:16I literally couldn't live my life without her.
12:18Oh, Rob.
12:19What?
12:21Look at the sparkles.
12:23Tassels.
12:25Father Robert, we have such a laugh together
12:27and we bring each other up all the time.
12:29I love the colour of this.
12:31We have to remember that we can't love the dress so much
12:33that we don't want to sell it.
12:35To be able to perform across the states with Aidan full-time,
12:39Holly needs her footwear and now dress business
12:42to bring in big bucks.
12:44Most companies work on the basis of thirds.
12:46So a third on product costs, a third on insurance, labour, travel
12:49and then a third is profit.
12:51So if we make a million dollars this year,
12:53then potentially I can make 150,000.
12:55And for that, I would get to live the life that I really want to.
12:58What is this one?
13:01Look at this one.
13:03Oh, wow, look at that.
13:04That's pretty.
13:05See how it shines?
13:06Because, yeah, it's got green undertones,
13:07because you can see it there.
13:08So that one is coming home with us for sure.
13:11Starting another new business could be tricky.
13:13If there's like 25, 30 yards, I'll take it.
13:16There's always a risk involved in making a gown.
13:19The fabrics, the trims and everything cost something.
13:21We're already putting on the line $400 to $500 before we even started.
13:25I think we've got everything.
13:26We've got enough stuff to make at least one dress.
13:28Well, we've got enough stuff to make multiple dresses.
13:29Yes.
13:30But, yeah, let's get going.
13:32Holly's invested in around five dresses' worth of fabric.
13:35She needs to get making so she can see if her new side hustle is going to pay off.
13:41That was a very successful trip.
13:43It was.
13:44Yeah, it was.
13:59Just south of Orlando, Joanne from Hull is on the lookout for love.
14:04But having married and divorced four times,
14:07a full-time job as an estate agent and a sideline flipping houses,
14:11it's not easy.
14:13Dating has definitely been a challenge.
14:16To try and help, best pal and fellow Brit Jane has talked Joanne
14:20into hosting a British singles night, which she's been pushing on social media.
14:25So I've actually had quite a crazy amount of feedback
14:29from me posting the event.
14:31We will find out if it's going to be absolutely bonkers
14:35or whether or not nobody will show up.
14:38Joanne's gathering everything she needs now
14:41so the night can run as smoothly as possible
14:43and she can concentrate on finding Mr. Right.
14:47We've got plates.
14:49I did manage to find some bunting.
14:52I don't miss England, but the people, the banter, the values.
14:57The ideal person would be a Brit who's Americanised,
15:01someone who appreciates America, the lifestyle,
15:03but still has that Brit touch.
15:09As Jane's working, Joanne's roped in her other British pals to help
15:13who are also looking for love with a fellow Brit.
15:17Hey. How are you? Good. Good to see you.
15:21Phil from Perth, Angela from Nottingham.
15:24Hi. Hi. I love you. I love it. Good to see you.
15:29How are you doing? Doing very well.
15:31Andy from London.
15:34An honorary Brit, Virginia.
15:36How are you doing? Good.
15:37Who's Canadian, but has an English mum.
15:39Well, thank you all for coming.
15:41I'm going to need some help putting out the plates,
15:43getting the food together.
15:44So we have very limited time to get the place decorated.
15:48I figured we'd meet here first, go over the game plan.
15:51Cheers, guys. Thank you for coming. Cheers, everybody.
15:54So what's everybody's goals? Does anybody have any high hopes?
16:00I think it's setting yourself up for failure
16:02if you have too much expectations, but, you know,
16:05if I can meet someone that interests me.
16:09I had a lot of people asking, do we have to be single?
16:11Can we just meet other Brits?
16:13I don't want to limit it to anybody. Who knows?
16:16I mean, there could be somebody turn up and you might get talking
16:19and they say, well, we might have a friend or, you know, something.
16:22Perfect for somebody. Right, exactly.
16:26Perthshire-born Phil is ready for a relationship close to his roots.
16:30I'm looking for a British partner
16:31because I feel that I have more in common with those people.
16:37Angela's travelled three hours from her home
16:39on Florida's Gulf Coast to be here.
16:42There's only two Brits that I know of down in Portmose Beach.
16:45That's it.
16:46I've been single for a long time.
16:48With a Brit, you know, things that you grew up with in England
16:51that people understand what you're talking about.
16:54For example, Magic Roundabout.
16:56It's all about making connections and friendships
16:58and who knows what leads from there.
17:01In Florida, the challenge I'm having is finding anybody into the same team.
17:06There's an absence of Brits in my life,
17:07and I'm just kind of looking for people with the same interests,
17:10maybe a little bit of cultural alignment,
17:13which is difficult to find in Florida.
17:16There are around 400,000 Brits living in Florida,
17:20but Joanne has no idea how many of them are coming tonight.
17:24Are you expecting a good turnout?
17:25I don't have exact numbers,
17:27so I'm a little bit worried it could go one of two ways.
17:31After a quick costume change, they gather the supplies.
17:35Can I grab these for me? Certainly.
17:37And head to the venue, all looking for love.
17:45The city of Daytona Beach has 23 miles of white sandy beaches.
17:51The ideal spot for ex-Army PT instructor Andreas from Southampton
17:56to run his boot camp.
17:57All right, guys, welcome!
18:03With everything he needs in the right place, he can get started.
18:07OK, we're going to do a quick warm-up, guys.
18:09So the first exercise, OK, we're going to be doing push-ups,
18:11and then we're going to be doing sit-ups.
18:14You will be getting a little bit sandy today.
18:15It's the beach.
18:17When I first set up boot camp here in America,
18:21only seven people showed up.
18:22And now we've opened a third vacation this year, which is awesome.
18:26And ideally, I want ten locations.
18:29One. Higher! Let's go!
18:33Andreas' business plan involves franchising out his boot camp brand,
18:38giving people use of the business model,
18:40reputation and expertise for a set fee.
18:43Earning him money without having to be present.
18:46Simple.
18:47So you're going to hold the squat position.
18:49Oof! There you go.
18:51OK. And I bring it this way.
18:54Long-time boot camper turned fitness coach, Mary,
18:57is considering becoming his next franchisee.
19:00So he needs the rest of the session to go to plan.
19:04Go!
19:06Let's go, guys!
19:08I've been doing boot camps on the beach for about three years now,
19:11and it's just making me think real hard about opening my own franchise.
19:16Nice work, Mary.
19:20Two, one, go!
19:22Nice, guys!
19:27Looking good, team!
19:29After leaving the Army, there is not one ounce of belief in me
19:33that I could ever be out in Florida with the business I have now
19:37and the impact I've made on people's lives.
19:39Well done, guys.
19:40Good job, good job, good job.
19:41Keep it going, keep it going.
19:42All the balls have to come from this, OK?
19:44From all the way down, all the way down this way, OK?
19:48And then back while staying in the squat position, OK?
19:51Three, two, one, go!
19:54He may have only been doing this in Florida for a few years,
19:57but Andreas has already had a huge effect on his loyal customers.
20:01Andy is a fantastic coach, and if you aren't pushing hard enough,
20:05he will make sure you aren't pushing hard enough.
20:07OK, now I know that you can sprint.
20:09I can see this again on Monday, all right?
20:11I have lost about 60 pounds in the last year
20:14since becoming part of this boot camp, and it's amazing.
20:19Results like Megan's are a walking advert for Andreas' business,
20:23but he still needs to promote it 21st-century style.
20:26Boot camp on the beach, Daytona Beach, Florida.
20:29It's a good place to be, guys. Let's make it happen.
20:32It's so beautiful here, and it's really, really good
20:34to have, like, a really beautiful aesthetic
20:35on our photos and our videos.
20:37Look at her go. What a machine. Machine!
20:41It's really important for my brand to have a big social media presence
20:44for two reasons, to try and get members to the boot camp,
20:47and also to try and attract future franchisees to the brand
20:50so we can open up more boot camps.
20:52Andy's hoping that one of those future franchisees is Mary.
20:56Everybody seems to have a great time.
20:58It's always a great opportunity for the boot camps
21:02from the different areas to get together
21:04and thinking about when I get my franchise
21:08that I'll be able to have my group join this.
21:11Nice, guys. Looking good.
21:13It seems Mary's interested,
21:15and after a quick group photo for the socials...
21:18Ready? Three, two, one. Boot camp!
21:22Andreas has 50 satisfied customers.
21:27Thank you for everything. Thank you.
21:29See you Monday.
21:30I couldn't have asked for a better event, really.
21:32Great for exposure, great for retention.
21:34Everyone's going away happy and totally satisfied
21:37with what we offered today.
21:38The next step is making sure Mary firms up her franchise,
21:43inching Andreas ever closer towards his dream
21:46of having multiple boot camps on his books.
21:58In Brit hotspot Davenport in central Florida,
22:02Holly from Northampton is also working towards her business goal.
22:06All right, what are we thinking?
22:07We're thinking this copper, I reckon, or that one.
22:11Holly's adding a new sideline to her footwear business,
22:14historical costumes.
22:16All right, so let's get a hoop.
22:18She's roped in pals Shelley and father Rob to help.
22:22What do you need, darling?
22:24We're going to see how this looks as a look,
22:25and then we know if it's right, then we can start cutting.
22:28I'm the luckiest girl in the world with my friends.
22:31If you could find friends half as good as mine,
22:33you're winning at life.
22:35What kind of dress are we thinking of?
22:36So we're going to go, like, my style is very popular.
22:39It's very comfortable.
22:40It's easy to wear.
22:41Her friends come in especially handy
22:43when boyfriend Aiden is on the road.
22:45I miss him terribly when he's away.
22:48That's why we have the million dollar target,
22:49because if I do that, then it means that I could potentially
22:52be making about $150,000 a year.
22:55I can definitely go and work for the Ren Fairs permanently,
22:58and I would get to live the life that I really want to.
23:00Right, so we're going to pin that one up,
23:01and then Shelley, if you have a nerve.
23:04What?
23:05So is this going to have the pull strings?
23:08Yeah.
23:09So that it will be good for all sizes?
23:11Exactly.
23:12But creating such a unique dress
23:14that will fit a range of body shapes doesn't come cheap.
23:17How much will you go for for the dress?
23:20You're going to have to work out roughly how many hours go into it.
23:22I try and keep things value for money.
23:24I want people to be able to have the nice things,
23:26but it's all going to come down to just how long it takes.
23:29Realistically speaking, on the circuit, these sort of dresses
23:31will go for like $600 to $1,500 to $1,600.
23:36Dress making, there's a lot more to it than people always think of.
23:39Patterning it out, cutting it all, sewing it all.
23:42Oh, look how beautiful that is.
23:43That just, that flawless cut.
23:45Yeah.
23:47Do you want me to just put it over or tuck it?
23:49What we're looking for is that that's going to feature to here,
23:52and that's going to feature to here.
23:53Yeah.
23:54With two willing helpers.
23:56I feel like Cinderella when the mice are putting together the dress.
23:59Just over half an hour later.
24:01So there we have something that will resemble the after gown.
24:04And it's really pretty.
24:06If you guys can cut out the linings for that, I'll start sewing a bodice.
24:09Sewing all the pieces together is where the pressure really begins.
24:14No, I snapped a needle, which was entirely my own fault.
24:17I wasn't paying attention and I hit the boning.
24:19But it means that I have to re-thread this in time machine.
24:21The biggest challenge of making dresses for other people and not for myself
24:24is the risk of errors in them.
24:26If I'm charging someone hundreds of dollars, it needs to be perfect.
24:30I may as well be a surgeon at this point.
24:32It can go wrong at any point.
24:34You could literally rip the fabric and you've lost hours worth of work.
24:50The biggest challenge of making dresses.
24:51In Clermont, in central Florida, Joanne from Hull is on her way to the best of British pub
24:56to set up and host her singles night.
24:59My biggest fear, obviously, at this point is that nobody shows up.
25:03But the pub's open, so hopefully there'll still be a good crowd.
25:07The ultimate goal is people making connections and hopefully, you know,
25:12you never know some love interest out of it.
25:15The pub is where the British community from far and wide come together to hang out.
25:22Hi, Chris. Hello, how are you doing? Good to see you.
25:26Bartender Chris from Barking is emceeing the night so Joanne can mingle with the other singles.
25:31But with just 40 minutes to go, he's also chipping in with the prep.
25:36We'll put the tablecloths on here, the red, white and the blue.
25:39You be the red. OK, I'll be the red. I'll be the blue.
25:42So my friends are helping me set up the room.
25:47We have the tablecloths, the plates, all the balloons and everything out.
25:50They're in the kitchen prepping the food for the event.
25:53We've got some sausage rolls, some scones.
25:57Do you need some cookies, I believe you said?
25:59Cookies? Did you say cookies? Cookies, I know. I know, I said it.
26:03What's wrong with you? We've got some biscuits.
26:06Joanne's thought of everything from catering to British bellies to a dating-themed drink.
26:11Hi, Liz. Hi. So I understand you've put together a drink for us.
26:15Look at you. You've got a get-lucky lemonade.
26:17Oh, yeah? That looks amazing.
26:23I like that. That's really good.
26:26Meanwhile, Chris is getting ready to greet the guests.
26:30Test, test, test, test.
26:32I'm actually really glad that Chris has offered to help me with this.
26:36I think just having somebody who can get some excitement going
26:40and get some liveliness in.
26:42So just let me know when you need me to start doing the announcement.
26:46OK.
26:46And then we'll get cracking.
26:48Elise, I think we're ready for food. OK, great. Thank you.
26:53But it's now well after seven.
26:56Yeah, I just... Let's just put them here for now.
26:59And no-one has ventured into the party room.
27:02Hopefully, some more people will show up at this point.
27:06Um...
27:07Fingers crossed. Hoping for the best.
27:09If it doesn't get busier soon,
27:11Joanne might have to wait a little longer to meet Mr. Right.
27:22In New Smyrna Beach, Southampton-born Andreas is on a mission to expand his fitness empire.
27:30Thanks, Maureen.
27:31OK.
27:33He's taking long-standing client, now personal trainer Mary, out to lunch
27:38to see if he can persuade her to buy into his boot camp franchise.
27:42This is cute.
27:44The food's great.
27:45And he's brought along another one of his former clients turned franchisee, Ashley,
27:50to see if she can help.
27:51That is a work of art.
27:54Ashley recently bought into Andreas' business, taking on her own franchise just over an hour away.
28:00Ashley set up a boot camp location in Vieira recently with tremendous success.
28:04So I've brought her along as well so she can give a real insight into the franchise option for Mary
28:09and to really help her along her journey as well.
28:11This is a very warming, hearty meal, this one.
28:14I always feel, like, really good afterwards.
28:16Mary has been Andreas' client for over three years, and now she's keen to join his team.
28:22But she has some questions.
28:24First of all, how much is it to get a franchise?
28:27So the initial payment is $2,000, and that will go towards marketing.
28:32We'll always help you, like, equipment and stuff initially.
28:34But you will have to think about how you're going to transport the equipment there.
28:37Right.
28:38So you may need to think about maybe getting, like, a bigger vehicle.
28:41It is quite a bit of a risk to be able to start this.
28:44I would have to put out my own fees for the franchise.
28:47I would have to be able to purchase my own equipment, the insurance.
28:53So there is a lot of capital that I would have to put out up front.
29:00Well, I also have concerns about the location fees.
29:04My one is free in Port Orange and we're free in Titusville.
29:08I actually have to pay for a location fee.
29:09It's, like, $5 for two hours.
29:12So it's not bad.
29:14The opportunity to expand my business in Florida is easier.
29:17I know that if I can do this, I know that other people can do it if they really believe
29:21in the service and the products like I do.
29:24One of the biggest parts of the selling as well is my support. I've been doing this for 12 years
29:28now.
29:29Within my third year, I've doubled my income and that's just because of like, I just put a lot of
29:33work into it.
29:35Over here, I genuinely believe there is an opportunity for you to become a millionaire if you really want to.
29:41There doesn't seem to be a ceiling to my success over here.
29:45With every franchise he sells, Andreas is bringing in money whilst he can be working elsewhere.
29:50So, if Mary buys into the franchise, they could both be onto a winner.
29:55If you own one boot camp, you could make $36,000 a year.
30:03Oh, you had to stop anyway.
30:05If Mary does go ahead, she'll need somewhere to host her boot camp.
30:09If Andreas can find the perfect spot, it could help convince her to sign up.
30:16We need to think about how big the land is.
30:18Are we going to disturb the residents close by?
30:21And then the big one is parking as well.
30:24All right, great.
30:28Just north of Orlando is Andreas' first suggestion, Turnbull Park.
30:33But Ashley's arrived first and she's got some concerns.
30:37My first initial thought when I got here was like, there's no bathroom.
30:41Yes.
30:43And we know, like the first question they're going to ask us is, where's the bathroom?
30:47And then when they start working out, they're going to have to use the bathroom.
30:50But Andreas is still going in for the hard sell.
30:53What I like about the park is that it doesn't seem like it's very well used in terms of like,
30:57we can then not, we're not going to disturb people when we're here.
31:00It's like very well kept and it's enclosed as well, which is good.
31:03There's not too much parking.
31:05That's exactly my other big thing.
31:08And then the other part is that in the summer when it rains, there's no pavilion.
31:13All the parks have opened both in the UK and the US.
31:16It's never going to be perfect.
31:18So it's about having that trade-off where, okay, so this isn't quite good,
31:21but these parts are good and then you have to try and figure out what the best option is.
31:24Neither Mary nor Ashley are sure that this is the right place for Mary to start her franchise.
31:30But will Andreas' second option be the one that persuades her to buy into his business?
31:41In the laid-back city of Davenport, Holly from Northampton has fixed her sewing machine issue
31:47and is finishing off her first dress for her new sideline, creating bespoke historical costumes.
31:54We're probably on about 40 hours' worth of time into this dress right now.
32:00So it is not a small task, but it is all coming together.
32:06Her friends are now busy with their own jobs, but Shelley's coming back today.
32:10She'll model the dress for photos to help sell it.
32:13Holly needs to get it finished.
32:15It's really stressful getting all of this done and it can be very overwhelming,
32:19but the dress is going to be made today.
32:21We now have a skirt.
32:23We have a waistband all sewn in with beautiful pleats
32:26and that noise, that swish that it's going to give, perfect.
32:31Hey, Holly.
32:33After two months on the road, boyfriend, professional jester Aiden,
32:38has come back to surprise Holly.
32:40What are you doing here?
32:44And with two days until his next fair in Colorado,
32:47she's making the most of having him home,
32:49getting his opinion on the dresser's underskirt.
32:52If we're selling this, it's got to appeal to the masses.
32:55And I think that if we use this shimmery white and gold...
33:01That would look a lot better.
33:02OK, we'll do that.
33:03Do you want me to go get that fabric?
33:04Yes, because that way you can be doing something
33:06rather than just looking at me.
33:07But I like doing that.
33:08I know you do.
33:10Aiden does his best to help me.
33:11Wherever he can.
33:12He's very good at following directions, cutting fabric.
33:15But it is very much a team effort.
33:16And that is something that I do love about our relationship.
33:19After putting Aiden to work,
33:21Holly multitasks, catching up with Melinda,
33:24her business partner in their medieval footwear company.
33:27People are so excited that we are there
33:30offering them a reasonably priced product
33:34that they can take home.
33:37Yep.
33:38Holly wants the business to make
33:40a million dollars this year
33:42from her footwear and now hopefully dresses.
33:45Seven months in,
33:46Melinda wants to know if they're on track.
33:48So I know we've passed the 250,000 mark.
33:52So we're about a quarter of the way, would you say?
33:54Yeah, like just over that.
33:55And we have three huge shows coming up
33:58in the next three months.
34:00Exactly.
34:01Feeling good.
34:01I'm feeling good about it.
34:02Holly is absolutely one of the hardest working people
34:04I've ever met.
34:05Her foot business is incredibly successful
34:07for a first year Renaissance Fair business.
34:09Talk to you soon.
34:10Love you.
34:10Bye-bye.
34:11Love you.
34:12Bye-bye.
34:14I think branching out and making dresses
34:16is right in her wheelhouse.
34:18She is a talented individual
34:20when it comes to making dresses.
34:22But before it can go up for sale,
34:24Holly needs to work out how much to sell it for.
34:26So we've got about 50,
34:2850 hours of work into it.
34:29We've got a calculator.
34:31Because we have to work out how to price this.
34:33And that's stressing me out now.
34:34So we do 50 at 20 an hour.
34:3750 at 20, that's 1,000.
34:38Okay.
34:39So it's $1,000 of labor right now.
34:41Then fabric-wise,
34:43round it up slightly to include the thread
34:45and stuff like that.
34:46Tax buttons.
34:48Wear and tear on sewing machines.
34:49Yep.
34:51So yeah, we're looking at about $1,500 for the gown.
34:53Yeah.
34:53It's a lot of money to spend on a dress.
34:55But the feeling that that dress will give you
34:57and the whole costume will give you
34:59is something that you cannot put a price on.
35:03If Holly underprices her dress,
35:05she risks wasting the time and money
35:07she's already invested.
35:09But if she overprices it,
35:11it may not sell.
35:12So the question is,
35:13is this going to be good enough to sell
35:15for $1,500, $1,600?
35:17Yeah.
35:19Let's hope so.
35:33By the banks of the Indian River
35:35and New Smyrna Beach,
35:36just off the Atlantic coastline,
35:39bootcamp business owner Andreas
35:40is looking to expand his operation.
35:44I just want to show you where
35:45we have potential here to really thrive.
35:48Along with Ashley,
35:49he's taking possible new franchisee Mary
35:52to look at Riverside Park,
35:54a second potential bootcamp location
35:56to try to convince her
35:58to buy into his business.
36:02What I like about it is
36:03the views are really nice of the water,
36:05which makes it really aesthetically pleasing.
36:07on the social media side of things.
36:08It's got a great parking lot here as well,
36:12which is awesome.
36:13Bathrooms.
36:14Bathrooms.
36:14Yeah.
36:15And then if the weather starts to come down,
36:17then we've got the pavilions here.
36:19We've got one, two, three pavilions,
36:20and we've got this adult area here.
36:23This is great.
36:24Yeah.
36:25This is great.
36:26Yeah, totally.
36:26So we've got the bars here.
36:28Ashley's going to be great on the bars right now.
36:29I mean, you can have to climb up here.
36:31Yeah.
36:32Right?
36:34Just have a go.
36:36Let's have a go.
36:37Look at that.
36:39Woo!
36:40I love this.
36:44Nice!
36:46That's beautiful.
36:47And another thing I'm seeing, Andy.
36:49Yep.
36:50We've got this uphill they can run.
36:52They can run up and down this bridge.
36:54Oh, that's true.
36:55So if we were to use this as a bootcamp location,
36:58how would you suggest that we utilize the area?
37:01We get them started with a warm-up
37:02with a couple of laps around the area.
37:05And then we would start to utilize our dumbbells,
37:07utilize our kegs, our kettlebells, our slam balls.
37:09I honestly believe that sometimes all it takes for someone
37:13to do really well in life is just someone believing in them.
37:17And I do genuinely believe that I give people the opportunity
37:23and the platform to go from bootcamper into coach
37:26and then into being a franchise owner.
37:29Now that Mary's seen two potential bootcamp spots,
37:32Andreas wants to find out if she's ready to become his latest franchisee.
37:37All right, Mary, so we've seen both locations.
37:39I think this one slightly nudges it,
37:42but, like, this is going to be your franchise.
37:45So, like, I will support any decision that you sort of make with this.
37:52I am leaning more towards this destination
37:55just because there's just so many ways to utilize the space.
37:59It's a family.
38:00It's sounding positive,
38:01but is Mary going to take the jump and buy in?
38:04And I'm just absolutely blown away
38:06by just how being able to even come to this moment
38:10from where I was three years ago
38:12just starting out at your bootcamp.
38:14Of course, there's, you know, a lot of planning
38:16that has to be coming in place,
38:17a lot of future discussions.
38:20We're here to help.
38:21Yes, and I definitely feel supported.
38:23Oh, totally.
38:24We're with you every single step of the way,
38:25and, like, we genuinely mean that.
38:27It would be a total honor to be a part of this team.
38:30So, you in it? You in it?
38:31I'm all in. Let's do this.
38:33Yes!
38:35Here we go.
38:36Good job.
38:37I think in the long run,
38:38it will be a good investment.
38:40And I am very excited about the journey that lies ahead.
38:43Mary is all in, which is amazing.
38:46I'm super stoked about it.
38:47So, she'll be growing the brand alongside me in the future,
38:50and I can't wait to get us started with it.
38:53And another franchise added towards Andreas' goal
38:57of having multiple bootcamp locations for his business.
39:09One hundred miles north in Davenport,
39:12Holly from Northampton's also trying to expand her business empire.
39:17In we go.
39:18Beautiful!
39:19After finishing her first dress to sell...
39:22Hey, Shelley!
39:24..best pal, teacher Shelley, has come to model it
39:26so Holly can take photos and videos for her website.
39:30Social media is incredibly important for promoting sales.
39:33Putting it out there,
39:34it would just expand the reach of people
39:36that will potentially see it.
39:38I'm thinking of film, putting on the layers
39:40and, like, what you need, a chemise and a hoop skirt,
39:42so things that people would need to purchase separately.
39:45After dressing Shelley in an authentic-styled base layer...
39:49You're in a chemise!
39:51Look, think like you're a Tudor ghost.
39:52You're Anne Boleyn.
39:53It's time for her to strike a pose.
39:56Let's do a transition video!
39:57You're going to cover the camera,
39:59because then I'm going to sway you every time.
40:00Ready?
40:00So go, pose.
40:02Beautiful.
40:10Holly used laces on both the overskirt and top
40:13so they can fit a range of sizes.
40:15I feel like I'm going to, like, a princess ball.
40:17You are going to a princess ball!
40:19Along with her full-time bar job,
40:22performing at Renaissance fairs and a footwear business,
40:25Holly's hoping to get around $1,600
40:27for her first foray into the dressmaking trade.
40:31By putting it on Shelley, she's going to look great in it
40:33and we'll prove that it will look fabulous on anyone.
40:43Beautiful!
40:46Love it!
40:48Video done, Holly now wants photographs
40:50to help sell the dress on her website.
40:53Let's go!
40:54Try and make it look like...
40:54For a neutral background fit for the English Renaissance,
40:57they head to the park.
40:59You look so pretty, Shelley.
41:00I know, it's so pretty.
41:02Yeah, I know!
41:03I do know!
41:04I've got this!
41:05Once I put it on
41:06and as we went through the different stages,
41:08I've grown to love it.
41:09So we're going to put you in portrait.
41:11We're going to get rid of everything
41:11that is non-period appropriate behind you.
41:17That's really beautiful.
41:18You look so good!
41:20Oh, Shelley, look at you!
41:23Oh!
41:24You look so pretty!
41:27I think that one is going to sell this dress.
41:28No worry in the world.
41:30We're not going to sell the dress, I don't think.
41:32But I have to sell the dress.
41:33But if I buy it,
41:35then you don't have to sell it.
41:37You can just use the pictures.
41:39It brings out my eyes.
41:41It does.
41:41You look stunning in it.
41:42I am really excited to be able to wear this dress
41:45to one of the Ren Fairs.
41:46If people say that dress is beautiful,
41:48I get to say,
41:49Holly made it.
41:50You've just sold your first dress
41:52on the way to a million dollars.
41:55Yahoo!
41:57You have to work so hard
41:59to make the Florida dream work.
42:01If you are prepared to really graft
42:03and really do the work,
42:04you can have the dream.
42:06It's not the American dream,
42:08but it's my dream.
42:15At the best of British pub in Claremont,
42:18Joanne from Hull is hosting
42:20a British singles event
42:21with the aim of helping her
42:23and her fellow expats find love,
42:25or at the very least,
42:27some new pals.
42:28You can't have a party
42:29without the party rings.
42:31It's been a quiet start,
42:33but Joanne's asked barman
42:34and MC Chris
42:35to try and drum up some interest.
42:38All right,
42:39so welcome to the singles.
42:41Now, if you want to join in,
42:43come down
42:44and we'll put a name badge on you
42:46and then we'll start the evening.
42:49I'll let you put this on you.
42:50Thank you for coming.
42:51Welcome.
42:52Chris's announcement
42:53seems to have done the trick.
42:55Hi.
42:56What's your name?
42:56Vivian.
42:57Vivian.
42:58All right, wonderful.
42:59People are shy at the moment.
43:01There's a lot of mixed ages,
43:02so we've got our work cut out,
43:05but I think once we get talking with them,
43:06it'll be fine.
43:07There you go, my love.
43:08I'll let you put that one on.
43:10Do you want Philip or Phil?
43:11That's fine.
43:12And Phil doesn't waste any time mingling.
43:15Susan,
43:17Priscilla,
43:18where are you from?
43:19Uh,
43:20I'm from Scotland originally.
43:22Joanne's other pals,
43:24Angela,
43:24Virginia,
43:25and Andy
43:25are also working the room.
43:28Lynn and Jamie.
43:30After a flurry of new arrivals,
43:32Joanne grabs the chance
43:33to join in the fun.
43:34Oh, you're from Watford?
43:35One of my best friends
43:36was from Watford,
43:37so, yeah.
43:38When I'm talking to friends,
43:40they're saying the same thing.
43:41The dating apps are awful.
43:42Dating at this age is hell.
43:43I definitely am in more of an environment
43:45where we're a lot more social.
43:47We have a lot more opportunity
43:49to hang out and go places
43:51and do stuff maybe than back home.
43:53The whole debate is,
43:54is it the jam and the cream
43:55or the cream and the jam?
43:56No, somebody actually said something
43:57and I thought it was really pointed
43:58and it's like,
43:59do you want to taste more of the cream
44:01or more of the jam?
44:03Either way,
44:04a delicious and successful night all round.
44:07It's a wonderful crowd tonight.
44:09I was very pleased to meet
44:10everybody that came here.
44:13Joanne put on a great event.
44:15Made some friends,
44:16going to take some numbers
44:17and hopefully, you know,
44:19we'll hang out again.
44:20Virginia had a positive night too.
44:24There were a few men.
44:25There were some nice gents that I met
44:27and we've had some really,
44:29really lovely chats.
44:30Phil might not have found it
44:32the one tonight.
44:33I love slapstick.
44:35You know, I did expect more people
44:38that were my age.
44:40But there's always a next time, Phil.
44:42I have not given up on love.
44:43I know it's out there for me somewhere
44:46and perhaps it will fall from the sky.
44:49Who knows?
44:50But I'm never giving up on love, ever.
44:53From organising the venue
44:55to the themed decorations and food,
44:57with new connections formed all round,
44:59Joanne's efforts seem to have paid off.
45:02I saw lots of conversations going on,
45:05lots of people exchanging numbers,
45:06so I would definitely say
45:07it was a success.
45:08And there was one match
45:10that might be made in heaven.
45:12Sure.
45:14I came here tonight
45:14and I was a little bit nervous.
45:16I spoke to nice girls here
45:18and I got a number.
45:20There were some really interesting
45:21conversations that happened.
45:23I also got a phone number.
45:24I'm very happy I came.
45:25I think it was worth it.
45:26I had a good time
45:28and we'll see what happens from here.
45:30Ah, a promising end to the evening.
45:32Even though I didn't particularly meet anybody,
45:34I've made some new friends.
45:36I definitely think we could do it
45:37on a more regular basis
45:38and see how it goes from there.
