00:43st paul's epistle to the romans chapter 3 verses 1 to 20
00:51therefore what advantage does the jew have what is the value of circumcision
00:59actually there are many advantages first of all the jews were entrusted with the oracles of god
01:07what then if some did not believe does their unbelief nullify the faithfulness of god
01:15absolutely not let god be proven true and every human being shown up as a liar just as it is
01:23written
01:23so that you will be justified in your words and will prevail when you are judged
01:32but if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of god
01:37what shall we say the god who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous is he i'm speaking in human terms
01:48absolutely not for otherwise how could god judge the world
01:54for if by my lie the truth of god enhances his glory why am i still actually being judged as
02:02a sinner
02:03why not say let us do evil so that good may come of it
02:07as some who slander us allege that we say
02:12their condemnation is deserved
02:16what then are we better off
02:19certainly not for we have already charged that jew and greek alike are all under sin
02:24just as it is written
02:25there is no one righteous not even one there is no one who understands there is no one who seeks
02:32god
02:33all have turned away together they have become worthless
02:38there is no one who shows kindness not even one
02:43their throats are open graves they deceive with their tongues the poison of asps is under their lips
02:51their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness
02:55their feet are swift to shed blood
02:58ruin and misery are in their paths
03:01on the way of peace they do not know
03:05there is no fear of god before their eyes
03:10now we know that whatever the law says
03:12it says to those who are under the law
03:15so that every mouth may be silenced
03:17and the whole world may be held accountable to god
03:22for no one is declared righteous before him
03:25by the works of the law
03:26for through the law
03:28comes the knowledge of sin
03:32this is the word of the lord
03:35thanks be to god
03:43so as our apostle is dictating
03:45there rises in his mind a figure often seen in his eyes
03:50the rabbinic disputant
03:52keen, subtle, unscrupulous
03:55and once eagerly in earnest
03:58yet ready to use any argument for victory
04:01how often that adversary has crossed his path
04:04in Syria, in Asia Minor, in Macedonia and in Achaia
04:09he is present now to his consciousness
04:12within the quiet house of Gaius
04:15and his questions come thick and fast
04:18following on this urgent appeal to his
04:20alas, almost impenetrable conscience
04:25what then is the advantage of the Jew
04:28what is the profit of circumcision
04:33if some did not believe what of it
04:35will their faithlessness cancel God's good faith
04:40but if our unrighteousness sets off God's righteousness
04:44would God be unjust bringing his wrath to bear
04:50we group the questions together
04:52to make it clearer that we do enter here
04:56at the opening of the third chapter
04:59upon a brief controversial dialogue
05:03perhaps the almost verbatim record
05:06of many a dialogue actually spoken
05:09the Jew pressed hard with moral proofs
05:12of his responsibility
05:13must often have turned thus upon his pursuer
05:17or rather have tried to escape from him
05:19in the subtleties of a false appeal
05:22to the faithfulness of God
05:26and first he meets the apostle's stern assertion
05:30that circumcision without spiritual reality
05:33will not save
05:36he asks then
05:37what is the advantage of Jewish descent
05:40what is the profit or any benefit of circumcision
05:46it is a mode of reply
05:48not unknown in discussions on Christian ordinance
05:52what then is the good of belonging
05:54to a historic church at all
05:57what do you give the divine sacraments to do
06:02and the apostle answers his questioner at once
06:05much in every way
06:07first because they were entrusted with the oracles of God
06:12first as if there were more to say in detail
06:16something at least of what is here left unsaid
06:19is shared later in Romans 9
06:22where he recounts the long roll of Israel's spiritual and historical splendors
06:29the adoption
06:30the glory
06:31the covenants
06:32the law giving and the worship
06:34the promises
06:35the fathers
06:36and the Christ
06:39was it nothing to be bound up with things like these
06:42in a bond made
06:43at once of blood relationship
06:45holy memories
06:46and magnificent hopes
06:49was it nothing to be exhorted
06:51to righteousness
06:52fidelity and love
06:54by finding the individual life
06:56thus surrounded
06:59but here he places first
07:01of even these wonderful treasures
07:03this
07:04that Israel was entrusted with the oracles of God
07:07the utterances of God
07:10his unique message to man
07:12through his prophets
07:13in the holy scriptures
07:15yes
07:16here was something which gave to the Jew an advantage
07:19without which the others would have had no existence
07:23no significance
07:26he was the trustee of revelation
07:30in his care was lodged the book
07:32by which man was to live and die
07:34through which he was to know immeasurably more about God
07:38and about himself
07:39than he could learn from any other informant put together
07:44he, his people, his church
07:46were the witness and keeper of the holy scriptures
07:50therefore to be born of Israel
07:52and ritually entered into the covenant of Israel
07:55was to be born into the light of revelation
07:58and to be committed to the care of the witnesses
08:01and keepers of that light
08:05to insist upon this enormous privilege
08:08is altogether St. Paul's purpose here
08:11for it is a privilege
08:13which evidently carries
08:15an awful responsibility with it
08:19what would be the guilt of the soul
08:21and of the community
08:22to whom these oracles were not given as property
08:25but entrusted
08:27and who did not do the things they said
08:32again the message passes on
08:34to the Israel of the Christian church
08:37what advantage has the Christian
08:39what profit is there in baptism
08:43much in every way
08:45first because to the church
08:47is entrusted the light of revelation
08:49to be born in it
08:51to be baptised in it
08:53is to be born into the sunshine of revelation
08:55and laid on the heart
08:57and care of the community
08:58which witnesses
09:00to the genuineness of its oracles
09:02and sees to their preservation
09:04and spread
09:06great is the talent
09:08great the accountability
09:12but the rabbinist goes on
09:15for if some did not believe
09:17what of that
09:18will their faithlessness
09:20cancel God's good faith
09:22these oracles of God
09:24promise interminable glories
09:26to Israel
09:27to Israel as a community
09:29a body
09:31shan't that promise hold good
09:33for the whole
09:34though some
09:35bold euphemism
09:37for the faithless multitude
09:38have rejected
09:40the promiser
09:42will not the unbelieving Jew
09:44after all
09:44find his way
09:45to life eternal
09:46for his company's sake
09:47for his part
09:49and lot
09:49in the covenant community
09:52will God's faith
09:53his good faith
09:54his pledged word
09:56be reduced to empty sounds
09:57by the bad Israelite's sin
10:01away with the thought
10:03the apostle answers
10:05anything is more possible
10:07than that God should lie
10:08rather let God
10:10prove true
10:11and every man
10:12prove liar
10:14as it turns written
10:15in Psalm 51
10:16that you might be justified
10:18in your words
10:19and might overcome
10:20when you plead
10:22he quotes the psalmist
10:23in that deep utterance
10:25of self-accusation
10:26where he takes part
10:28against himself
10:28finding himself guilty
10:30without one plea
10:31and in the loyalty
10:33of the regenerate
10:34and now awakened soul
10:36is jealous
10:37to vindicate
10:37the justice
10:38of his condemning God
10:41the whole scripture
10:42contains
10:43no more impassioned
10:44yet no more profound
10:46and deliberate
10:46utterance
10:47of the eternal truth
10:49that God
10:50is always
10:50in the right
10:51or he would be
10:52no God at all
10:55but it is better
10:56and more reasonable
10:57to doubt anything
10:59than to doubt
11:00his righteousness
11:01whatever cloud
11:02might surround it
11:03and whatever lightning
11:05bursts the cloud
11:08but again
11:09the quibbler
11:10intent not on
11:11the glory of God
11:12but on his own status
11:13takes up the word
11:14but if our unrighteousness
11:16exhibits or sets off
11:18God's righteousness
11:19if our sin
11:21gives occasion
11:21to grace
11:22to abound
11:23if our guilt
11:25lets the generosity
11:26of God's way
11:27of acceptance
11:27stand out
11:28the more wonderful
11:29by contrast
11:30what shall we say
11:31would God be unjust
11:34bringing his wrath
11:36to bear upon us
11:37when our pardon
11:38would illustrate
11:39his grace
11:40would he be unjust
11:42would he be
11:44not unjust
11:48we struggle
11:49in our paraphrase
11:50to bring up
11:50the bearing
11:51as it seems to us
11:52of a passage
11:53of almost equal
11:54grammatical difficulty

12:29rights and wrong
12:30as were one
12:31between man
12:31and man
12:32not between man
12:33and an eternal God
12:36such talk
12:37even for the sake
12:38of argument
12:39is impossible
12:40for the regenerate soul
12:42except under urgent protest
12:45away with the thought
12:47that he would not
12:47be righteous
12:48in his punishment
12:49of any given sin
12:51since how
12:52shall God judge
12:53the world
12:55how on such conditions
12:56shall we repose
12:58on the ultimate fact
12:59that he is
13:00the ultimate judge
13:02if he could not
13:04righteously
13:04punish
13:05a deliberate sin
13:06because pardon
13:08under certain conditions
13:09illustrates his glory
13:11then he could not
13:13punish any sin
13:13at all
13:15but then he is
13:16the judge
13:17and he does
13:18bring wrath
13:18to bear

13:21he goes on
13:23to take up
13:23the quibbler
13:24on his own ground
13:25and goes at all lengths
13:26upon it
13:27and then flies
13:28with abhorrence
13:29from it
13:31for if God's truth
13:32in the matter
13:33of my lie
13:34has abounded
13:35has come more
13:36amply out
13:37to his glory
13:38why am I too
13:39called to judgment
13:40as a sinner
13:42why not say
13:43as the slander
13:44against us
13:45goes
13:45and as some
13:46assert
13:47let us do the ill
13:49that good may come
13:51so they assert
13:52of us
13:53but their doom
13:55is just
13:55the doom of those
13:56who would utter
13:57such a maxim
13:58finding shelter
13:59for a lie

14:06from a bitter
14:07and frequent

14:09when he takes

15:38that he cannot

15:39with falsehood
15:40and no charge
15:42is so likely
15:43to injure
15:43even where
15:44it only
15:45feigns
15:45to strike
15:47and of course
15:49the mighty
15:49paradox
15:50of justification
15:51lent itself
15:52easily
15:53to distortion
15:53as well as
15:55the contradiction
15:56of sinners
15:57so let us do evil
15:59that good may
16:00come of it
16:01no doubt
16:02represented
16:03the report
16:03which prejudice
16:05and bigotry
16:06would regularly
16:06carry away
16:07and spread
16:08after every
16:09discourse
16:09and every
16:10argument
16:11about free
16:12forgiveness

16:40nature of the
16:41malign doctrine

16:49whose doom
16:50is just
16:50what a witness

16:54truthfulness
16:54of the gospel
16:56this brief
16:57stern

16:58absolutely
