02:24The following is a special presentation of HBO Sports.
02:52So, Marquez was awarded the split decision.
02:55All right, let's bring in HBO Boxing expert Larry Merchant.
02:59Larry, were these rematches made because those first fights were so good or because the decisions were controversial or unexpected?
03:08Maybe they did foul up the gold and silver medals in those fights.
03:14But we're here because the fights were so good.
03:18The kind of give-and-take action fights the fans want to see and then see again, although all too
03:26often the winners don't care to see again.
03:30Again, these are the kind of fights and disputes that should be resolved in the ring with rematches.
03:37We don't give double gold medals in boxing.
03:41All right, well, Johnson and Marquez was seen by a few people.
03:44So, let's take a look at the highlights of that first bout back in October.
03:48It was in Corpus Christi.
03:50And Mark Johnson fighting in his third bout at 118 pounds.
03:54He looked good in the early going.
03:56Too much speed.
03:59Connecting on the body of Marquez.
04:02But Marquez stabilized himself and then began to impose his will on Johnson.
04:09Marquez, a physical fighter, a strong fighter.
04:12But here's where Johnson ran into trouble.
04:14In the ninth round, he was deducted a point for holding.
04:18And that wasn't the only deduction for Johnson.
04:22Later in the tenth and final round, this act holding and hitting in the kidneys cost Johnson another point.
04:30Johnson was declared the winner.
04:32But, as we mentioned, an error in the judging scorecard gave the victory to Marquez by split decision.
04:39All right, let's bring in HBO boxing expert, Hall of Fame trainer and manager, Manny Stewart.
04:44Manny, now, Mark Johnson has been a perennial champion at 112 pounds and 115 pounds.
04:52He's adored by many of the boxing public, but he had all that he could handle at 118 pounds against
04:57Rafael Marquez.
04:59Can he adapt to the bantamweight level, especially from a power perspective?
05:04I think he can adapt.
05:06But one of the things that he's concerned about, and he mentioned that yesterday, that he's not sure himself.
05:11He said the same punches that he was hitting Marquez with was the same punches he was knocking out guys
05:16at 112 and 115 pounds.
05:18And he feels that this fight tonight would give him a gauge of where his future stands in the bantamweight
05:23division.
05:23And he said the only reason he's in the bantamweight division is because he can make money there.
05:28And there's no money in 112 and 15, which he feels more comfortable at.
05:31In fact, he says possibly the style of Marquez may be just troublesome to him, and he would rather be
05:39even fighting Timmy Austin, probably more so than Mark Marquez, because he says he beat Timmy three times in the
05:45amateurs.
05:46And he feels that Marquez's style and durability may just be a problem for him.
05:50Could be a do or die night here for Mark Johnson.
05:53All right, let's take a look at the tail of the tape for our first rematch of the night.
05:57Bantamweights, Mark Johnson and Rafael Marquez.
06:00Johnson, four years older, but it's Marquez enjoying the two-inch height advantage and the one-and-a-half-inch
06:05reach advantage.
06:06Both fighters weighing in at 117-and-a-half pounds.
06:09And when they stepped on our unofficial HBO scales tonight, they both weighed in at 126 pounds.
06:15Punch that numbers now with Larry Merchant.
06:17In the first fight, both fighters very active.
06:21The total punchers were similar as well as the landed punches.
06:26But in the area of power punches, Mark Johnson was credited with many more hits.
06:34Rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Butterman.
06:37The Mark Tuchov-Johnson, Rafael Marquez fight is scheduled for 12 rounds using the unified rules of the Association of
06:44Boxing Commissions.
06:44There is no three-knockdown rule.
06:47Only the referee can stop the fight in case the cut is caused by an accidental headbutt.
06:51We go to the scorecards if the four rounds have been completed and you cannot be saved by the bell
06:56in any round, including the 12th and quarter round.
07:00Friend.
07:00All right, Harold, the crowd settling in nicely here at the Mandalay Bay for Marquez Johnson.
07:06Larry, let's take a closer look at Rafael Marquez.
07:09Rafael Marquez found out about his victory while he was in the casino well over an hour after the result
07:19had been announced and he thought he was a loser.
07:23And yet, he is a big three-to-one underdog tonight to Johnson.
07:30Incidentally, his big brother, Marquez, Manuel Marquez, will be fighting in an important featherweight fight against Robbie Peden two weeks
07:41from now.
07:43Let's head across the ring now.
07:45Larry, let's take a closer look at Mark Tuchov-Johnson.
07:50Johnson was in bed two hours after he thought he won when he saw on television that he had lost.
07:57He says nobody ever called him and gave him an official verdict.
08:02And that was the first time he had lost in 11 years in the ring.
08:07And perhaps we can credit that to the curse of Cedric, Cedric Kushner, who lost Johnson, Shane Mosley, and Rockman
08:22last year.
08:24And each of them went on to lose their next fight.
08:28Interesting observation.
08:29All right, for the official introductions, let's send it inside the ring to Michael Buffer.
08:36Ladies and gentlemen, good evening and welcome to the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino of Las Vegas.
08:43Tonight, Top Rank Incorporated is proud to present an evening of professional boxing for your entertainment,

08:53Before we go on, ladies and gentlemen, tonight marks the first time in a quarter of a century
08:59that Top Rank at a major boxing event is without the services of fight site coordinator Jay Edson.
09:08Words cannot express how much Jay was loved and respected by all who knew him.
09:13On behalf of Bob Arum and everyone at Top Rank, we miss you, Jay.
09:19We miss your big smile, your warm heart, and we shall never forget you.
09:23Rest in peace, dear friend.
09:26And now we continue, ladies and gentlemen.
09:28These bouts are sanctioned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
09:32The three judges at ringside for this first contest,
09:35scoring the bouts on a ten-point must system will be
09:39Chuck Jampa, Jerry Roth, and Doug Tucker.
09:42And when the bell rings, your referee in charge of the action, Tony Weeks.
09:47And now, let's get the party started.
09:50Twelve rounds of boxing for the vacant USPA.
09:54FANTOMWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIPS.
10:00Introducing first, fighting out of the blue corner,
10:03wearing a white trim with purple and weighing in at 117 and one-half pounds.
10:09An outstanding record consisting of 40 victories in 42 professional bouts,
10:14including 27 knockouts with only two losses.
10:19From our nation's capital, Washington, D.C., the former two-time world champion,
10:25Mark Tushar Johnson.
10:35And his opponent across the ring, fighting out of the red corner,
10:38wearing black trimmed with gold letters,
10:40he officially weighed in at 117 and one-half pounds also.
10:44And his professional record stands at 26 victories in 29 bouts,
10:50including 24 knockouts with three defeats.
10:55De Ciudad de Mexico, ladies and gentlemen,
10:59D.C. Caballeros, Rafael Marquez.
11:11Let's go.
11:21Here we go.
11:22Come on.
11:23Okay.
11:23You already see your instructions.
11:25I'll receive your instructions.
11:27Be careful with your head.
11:31Right here is good.
11:33Anything below that is going to be low.
11:34Aquí está bien.
11:35Aquí no.
11:36Right here is good.
11:37Anything below that is going to be low.
11:39Aquí está bien.
11:39Aquí no.
11:40Keep everything above the waist.
11:42Delos en todo para arriba.
11:44I want a good, clean fight.
11:46Yo quiero uno play Olympia.
11:48Obey my commands at all times.
11:50Above all, protect yourselves at all times.
11:52Escúchame.
11:53Cuidate.
11:54Ready?
11:55Listo?
11:56Ready?
11:57Let's go.
11:58Vámonos.
11:59The stakes are high for these fighters.
12:02The winner will be declared a mandatory challenger
12:06for bantamweight champion Tim Austin.
12:11Supposedly to meet later this year.
12:15Just a minor correction.
12:17Emmanuel.
12:18Now I hear he said that Johnson claims to have beaten
12:21Tim Austin two times in their two fights as amateurs.
12:27Well, he's never lost to him, that's for sure, that's what he's saying.
12:31We'll get Austin's side of the story some other time.
12:34Amateur boxing and the best of boxing is different.
12:38Mark too sharp Johnson looking to see if his skills are too sharp.
12:44This is the fourth bout of his comeback.
12:47He had a 19-month layoff.
12:50He spent the better part of the year 2000 in jail for violating parole.
12:58Well, I can see right away that he's intending to try to go for a decision this time.
13:02He's intending to try to outbox Marquez instead of going for the knockout as he did in the last fight.
13:18You notice he's maintaining a distance this time, whereas the first time he was getting very close with his playing
13:23into Marquez's game.
13:25But he's keeping his distance this time.
13:29Well, Johnson talked to us yesterday about the fact that he did not know that Marquez was so physically strong
13:37until he got him inside the ring.
13:41Marquez is also very difficult to hit clean, and he has a good jab of his own, which is unusual.
13:46I think his hand speed is surprising, at least to me.
13:50When I was going to fall the first fight, I was very surprised.
13:56Johnson, of course, southpaw.
13:58Marquez fights out of a conventional stance.
14:02And I can see that Marquez has been training very well in preparing the fight of southpaw.
14:06He's doing everything properly.
14:08He's carrying Johnson's jab with his left hand and still in a position where he can counter with that same
14:14left hand.
14:15That's what he did just then.
14:29That's what he did in a position where he is.
14:40Nice, nice, nice.
14:43Nice, nice, nice.
14:45Nice.
14:45My-y-y.
14:46Nice!
14:47Get your nice, nice.
14:52I can tell that Johnson came in and intended to box and handle him at a distance,
14:57but he's probably becoming aware of the fact that that's not working.
15:02Marquez is showing surprisingly good boxing skills in this fight.
15:06And may have the age in the boxing right now.
15:09When we head into the corner of Rafael Marquez,
15:13Ray Torres will do the interpreting for Sestima.
15:24You've got to be live. He's closing the distance for you.
15:29You've got to throw more than one punch. Two or three punches.
15:32Don't let him win in that aspect. Make sure you throw punches.
15:37Are you fine? Is everything okay?
15:46Okay. What you doing here?
15:48Give me a tail.
15:51Give me a tail. Give me a tail.
15:58Let's come out. Come out low.
15:59Come out low, Marquez.
16:01You're ready with your face before you go.
16:03Beautiful.
16:06Go seconds out.
16:08What happens right here is what happens often when you have a southpaw and a right hander fighting.
16:13Often they get their legs crossed because their two lead legs come together at the same time.
16:24Manor, you talked about the distance between both fighters and the early going.
16:28Johnson told us yesterday in the first fight that initially he didn't respect Marquez's punching power ability.
16:37So he went in close in the first fight and possibly tired himself out in the later rounds.
16:42And he also got caught in the later rounds with a lot of shots.
16:45And he tried to go for the knockout because he was hitting in trellies.
16:48And he thought that he would have knocked him out since he hadn't heard anything about him.
16:51But this particular fight, it's interesting.
16:54There's more boxings, but Marquez is holding his own in the boxing department.
16:59And I know later on the fight's going to get pretty hectic when both guys realize that they have not
17:03established a confident lead.
17:09In addition to the ball in front of the crowd.
17:11The crowd getting answered early on here.
17:14The crowd getting answered early on here at Mandalay Bay.
17:24Two-shot fought the first fight like a hammer, and he's trying to fight this one like a knife.
17:32It isn't working.
17:44Quick counter by Marquez.
17:46Yeah, Marquez is sitting, waiting for him to come in and let him take that little slight step back and
17:51shoot the right-hand counter.
17:52Much like Antonio Berra does a lot when he fights South Falls.
18:20Marquez opens up, blows to the body.
18:24Marquez is very sharp, and he's landing a lot of punches.
18:27There was that counter jab again.
18:28He's landing uppercuts a lot, too.
18:30A little short punches from underneath, which is interesting.
18:33I never saw him do that before.
18:35The other thing that was impressive about Marquez's counter jab came over the top.
18:39Yes, he's working perfectly.
18:41He's using his left-handed to counter, to pick his punches off and to counter at the same time.
18:50He's actually fighting more of a counter-punching fight.
18:52He's being effective at a different stage.
18:57Mark-too-sharp Johnson showing Rafael Marquez quite a bit of respect.
19:27Don't miss these upcoming HBO sports shows.
19:30Monday night at 10 p.m., catch the next installment of Real Sports with Brian Gumbel.
19:35Check out the raging debate over whether dodgeballs should be banned from our schools.
19:40March 9, Boxing After Dark returns with a lightweight title fight featuring champion Paul Spadafora against the always tough Angel
19:47Man Freddy.
19:48March 23, Prince Nassim Ahmed makes his return to the ring, taking on Manuel Calvo in a featherweight bout.
19:55Also that night, fan favorite and former world champion, Johnny Tapia, who's in attendance tonight, takes on hard-punching Angel
20:03Vasquez.
20:04And on the record with Bob Costas returns for his second season, March 28, featuring another collection of superstar athletes
20:11in Hollywood's elite.
20:12Big names, bold questions, Bob's back, only on HBO.
20:21Johnson said that this fight would tell him whether he's a young 30 or an old 30.
20:30He is not proving that he's a young 30 yet.
20:35You know, and it's interesting, Marquez is doing something similar to Antonio Barra, but he's improved a lot more going
20:42into this fight as compared to the last fight.
20:44And more in the boxing area, not so much in slugging.
20:47He's working very effective with his left jab, in addition to having a little right uppercut that he's shooting in.
20:55CompuBot's punch stat numbers for two rounds.
20:58Johnson threw 95 punches, but he only landed on 15 for a connection percentage of 16.
21:06Marquez, 21 of 63 for 33 percent.
21:0916 percent, not going to get it done.
21:12No.
21:31So far, this has been a good reason not to have a win match.
21:35A lot of respect to each other.
21:37So, I'm just hoping that the fight is close as it is, even though maybe a little slight edge may
21:43be to Marquez,
21:44but sometimes Johnson gets caught up in the heat of the battle and gets emotionally and commits fouls.
21:50And I think that possibly could be a factor, much as it was in the last fight, which caused him
21:54his decision.
21:56The first fight certainly heated up at about rounds four, five, and six.
22:01So, we'll see if the second fight takes the same pattern.
22:04But even at this stage, Johnson was throwing a lot of punches, because he was so confident at the last
22:11fight
22:11that he never had to respect that he's showing today.
22:14Yeah, but what happened then, of course, was he's a very tired horse coming down the stretch.
22:19That's correct.
22:20So, maybe he is trying to pace himself here, but he might pace himself out of the fight.
22:26He's pacing himself, but taking the risk of possibly getting the hand on points.
22:33It's okay with the pace of yourself, and you know you're comfortably winning, so you'll save it.
22:37But at this stage, he has not been able to establish any quick dominance.
22:50Looping right hand from Rafael Marquez.
22:55Marquez has shown a lot of different things in this fight.
22:57He's had a very good shot, left jab over the shoulder, much like he just landed there.
23:01He's showing a right uppercut, and now he's added a looping right hand over top.
23:05Doing a variety of things.
23:07Marquez getting busier here, and Johnson fires back with a counter right hand to the head.
23:15Very right hand shook Marquez.
23:18Best punch of the fight.
23:32Okay, the fourth round's coming up.
23:36Now we've got to start the fighting.
23:37You need to start fighting.
23:39You've got to throw the body.
23:40When he jabs you, make sure you count it at the right jab that he has.
24:03The right hook that Johnson landed right there was the most effective punch for him in the first fight,
24:08and you may see him throwing more of those of the fight progress.
24:10He was very effective with the right hook in the first fight.
24:15If Marquez follows his corner's instructions and starts to try to make a brawl of it,
24:21then we'll see how sharp too sharp can be.
24:25I'm talking to the head shout.
24:31All right, let's bring in Harold Latimer to see how he has the fight score through three.
24:35Okay, Fran.
24:36Not much of an action fight.
24:3829 to 28, two rounds to one.
24:40Mark, two sharp Johnson.
24:42I thought he won the first round, very, very close round using the right jab.
24:45Round three, I gave him mostly on a basis on a tremendous right hook.
24:48Then he landed late.
24:50The second round, I thought Mark has outpunched him.
24:51But, you know, Fran, the key to this fight, as I see it so far, is Mark Johnson circles.
24:56And he circles to the left.
24:58He's trying to square up in front of Marquez.
25:00And I'll tell you, it's the wrong way.
25:02I mean, he's actually moving into the right hand, the referee of Marquez.
25:05And Marquez is going to nail him with a watch.
25:08I have it two rounds to one in favor of Marquez.
25:11Which means we have a good fight.
25:13No, I don't know what it means.
25:14We have a close fight.
25:16There is a difference.
25:17It's going to get warmed up, believe me.
25:19I can see it happening.
25:20But the difference is sometimes you watch Marquez.
25:23It looks like he's hurt because he's a little bit clumsy on his feet at times.
25:26He gets his legs crossed.
25:28Whereas Johnson seems to maintain much better balance.
25:32Hard shots to the body by Rafael Marquez.
25:34This is his first rematch of his career.
25:37He talked to us yesterday about knowing he's not as fast as Johnson.
25:41So he said he really worked on his hand speed in camp.
25:46Can you improve your hand speed that much, Emmanuel?
25:48Well, I think you can, particularly if you have good sparing problems on a fast.
25:52It's the best third it is, is having someone...
25:54Jimmy Ellis used to be Muhammad Ali's best sparing problem when Ali was in his prime.
25:59Mainly because of his feet.
26:00In fact, when Ali couldn't fight, Jimmy Ellis' first father went on to win the heavyweight championship of the world.
26:15Johnson now, coming through with a right uppercut.
26:20Firing off left hook.
26:26Action starting to pick up here in the fourth.
26:47Johnson was off balance there.
26:50Johnson is starting to get busier now.
26:51And I think he's realizing that he's hasn't established a kind of lead that he wanted to feel comfortable about.
26:56So he's becoming much busier now.
27:09Rafael Marquez planting both feet, standing right in there in the middle.
27:15As the two trade, big shots here to end the fourth round.
27:18This is the beginning of what's going to be happening later.
27:22End the fourth round.
27:24This is the beginning of what's going to be happening later.
27:34Pulling down with your hands down again.
27:36Everything else is nice.
27:37And you begin to reach.
27:39While you reach, and I like to know, behind your dad, the boy's trying to trip you up because you've
27:44got to turn your hands around.
27:46You've got to turn your hands around now.
27:48Come on, hold up.
27:52No, pero él sabe lo que está haciendo el ref.
27:56The ref knows what he's doing.
27:58The referee has to be warned.
28:01Okay, you've got to throw punches.
28:02You've got to throw combinations.
28:03Not just one punch.
28:04A jab and a hook.
28:05A jab and a hook.
28:06And then the uppercut is very important.
28:09You've got to use that fifth round.
28:25CompuBot's numbers a little bit closer here in the fourth round.
28:28Johnson, 14 of 52 for 27%.
28:31Marquez, 17 of 46, 37%.
28:41Both fighters are going to be busier now because they're trying to make sure that they get a lead because
28:46I think both guys are concerned.
28:50And Johnson is looking, seemingly, to try to land their straight left right through the center.
28:56And Marquez is going to have to pick up the pace a little bit more himself.
29:01Johnson lunges in with the right hook for the body.
29:22The difference, Mark Johnson says, between the first fight and this fight.
29:27He said physically he was prepared for the first fight, but mentally he was not.
29:31He was in the midst of going through a divorce.
29:34He says this time around he is focused both physically and mentally.
29:40Also coming off the first loss in over 11 years in his career.
29:47That could have a mental effect as well.
29:57Tony Weeks, warning Raphael Marquez, keep the shots up.
30:07Hey Johnson, I don't want you to tell me.
30:09All right.
30:10Okay.
30:10Stay right here.
30:12You may have heard the referee Tony Weeks say to Johnson,
30:18I don't want to see you retaliate.
30:21Ready?
30:22Okay, let's go.
30:23Time in.
30:24Let's see if he retaliates.
30:26Play the fight.
30:35I'd like to see somebody retaliate for something.
30:38Johnson gets caught by a right hand for Marquez.
30:55Big white uppercut by T-Sharp Johnson.
31:15Alpha, Alpha, Alpha, Alpha.
31:33Marquez is starting to find his target with that straight short right here through the center.
31:41Johnson looking for spots to get inside.
31:45Marquez, Zach backing away.
31:47Oh, yeah.
31:48Oh, yeah.
31:48Oh, yeah.
31:49Nice pick it up.
31:50Let him go.
31:56What the...

32:06There's a growing movement pushing for just that.
32:17You're winning the round but very close.
32:19You're not throwing enough punches.
32:22Come on.
32:23You hear me?
32:23Yeah, the rounds are too close.
32:25They're gonna give it to him.
32:34The low blow is a type of a low blow where he was probably being pulled down and he didn't
32:39intend to go blow it just the way it straight.
32:41But I don't think it hit him too much.
32:42Watch that body.
32:43To a three day.
32:45I've heard him.
32:46But then...
32:46Please, please.
32:47Go.
32:51Johnson...
32:52Johnson owns two hair salons and a barbershop.
32:56So far, this fight is like watching hair grow.
33:16Marquez's corner would like to see more action, more punches thrown.
33:23Marquez did pretty good in the power punch department that last round.
33:26That's the counter right hand.
33:28Big counter right hand to the head of Johnson.
33:33Both fighters started boxing at an early age.
33:35I think Marquez started when he was six years old.
33:38His father was a former flyweight champion in Mexico.
33:42And I've been knowing Mark all of his life.
33:45His whole family has been into boxing.
33:46His father and mother.
33:47In fact, ever since he was two years old, I've known him.
33:49So he's been boxing all of his life.
33:52Marquez working on his counter material.
33:56Catches Johnson coming in with a left hand.
34:08Ssssssssssssssssssssssmmm
34:08Outside-out-out-out, style-out-out, style-out, and you go.
34:11Whom!
34:13Vaughn, get out!
34:13Get out!
34:15Get out!
34:17Get out!
34:17Put it here!
34:20Don't we stop!
34:22Don't we stop!
34:22Don't we stop!
34:22Don't we stop!
34:33Fights close, Manny.
34:35What would you like to see Johnson do to become more active?
34:39I think he's going to have to be busier than that.
34:42He's sitting, and for the most part, his timing is just a hair off.
34:46It's not that far, but it's just enough where Marquez is going to penetrate,
34:50in particular, those straight punches.
34:53Marquez busting through the defense right there.
34:56I would like to see Marquez start moving on his feet, more boxing with angles.
35:00He's boxing, but he's not really using his feet, so to say.
35:03So it's just in front of the guy fighting.
35:07And if the fight continues as the pattern is falling into,
35:11it's going to favor Marquez going down the stretch.
35:22Hardest shot of the fight thrown here in the sixth round.
35:26And a very short shot puncher, too.
35:29I'd like to see Mark Boxmore using his feet.
35:31You need to change around, give him more angles.
35:41This is the first round of the fight where either fighter has been dominant.
35:47That fighter has been Marquez.
36:02Don't go to the ropes now.
36:04Stay away from the ropes.
36:08In the center of the ring.
36:10In the center of the ring.
36:11That's where you need to be.
36:13It's easy.
36:14If you get in there, you've got to throw your punches.
36:17Please listen to me.
36:19Tira la combinación que se...
36:24Don't make it close.
36:26Don't stay in there bang with the beat.
36:28Because you're loading up with it, and you ain't going here and taking under.
36:31You're doing this shit.
36:32That's sticking and taking under.
36:34That's the man.
36:34Everything right here.
36:36And keep your hands moving.
36:39Keep your hands moving.
36:40What about this?
36:44What do you got to get brained?
36:45Don't get brained.
36:49Ham Johnson, father and trainer of Two Sharp Johnson, telling him not to get brave.
36:58Let's bring in Harold Mutterman to see how he has a fight scored through six.
37:01Okay, Fred.
37:0358-56.
37:04Four rounds to two.
37:05Mark Two Sharp Johnson.
37:06Fred, I've got to tell you.
37:07He's like the first fight.
37:08Mark Johnson gets so fast.
37:10Mark has picked very, very little in the early rounds of the first round.
37:13Same thing here.
37:14And in round six, all of a sudden, he starts.
37:16He picks up the pace.
37:17And he mugged him.
37:18And I've got to tell you.
37:19It looks like he's taking control of this fight.
37:21So, four to two.
37:2458-56.
37:25Johnson.
37:26But the momentum is all with Marquez.
37:29I have the fight.
37:48Rafael Marquez, the brother of the more popular, more well-known Juan Manuel Marquez, comes in at 26-3.
37:5924 wins by knockout.
38:01All three of his losses coming by knockout as well.
38:05Show you how tough this kid in his pro debut.
38:09He took on Victor Robin Allis.
38:12Robin Allis, a former Bantamweight champ.
38:15Robin Allis was fighting his 56th fight.
38:19Rafael, stop, stop.
38:23I don't know if that was brave or dumb management.
38:27He probably didn't have a choice.
38:29That was sinker.
38:30That's a sinker swim school of a boxer.
38:34Let's see what you got off the bat.
38:40Marquez trying to size up Johnson.
38:45Loves to punch down.
38:46Loves to come over the top.
38:59Alton, Alton, stop, stop, stop.
39:01Here we go.
39:26Oh, Marquez with that straight right hand, and it floors Morse.
39:31To stop Johnson the first time in his career. He's been knocked down
39:41Something good I'm looking around trying to get the legs back after again and get the circulation
39:46Browns almost over
39:54He's experiencing this
39:55South Park movement back and forth at different angles is what got him through that Johnson survives
40:02He looked like a very old 30 in that round
40:10But when I got him I got it
40:16You'll be stopping
40:20To move up with your hands down
40:26Okay, you sure
40:32How you feel?
40:34The right hand that Marquez docked him down with in the right hand he's been concentrating on all night
40:40And as you can see them totally focused a lot on that straight short right hand and he did something
40:45very beautifully shot the jab
40:47To the body and then shot the right hand on the chin
40:51And Mark never even saw it
41:05Mark Johnson has had a terrific career
41:08career
41:10Mostly in the
41:13Small world of boxing not too well known outside of the of boxing
41:20He's on the verge perhaps
41:23I'm seeing that career end he himself said if he loses this fight
41:27There's no money out there for him to make and he would seriously consider retirement
41:34It's been a great time a bit of a time in the interview yesterday speaking of possibly retirement which was
41:40to me
41:41Unusual yeah, there's an old saying when you talk about retirement you're retired. Yes
41:46It's on your mind
41:49Johnson told us big paydays aren't worth it if I can't count the money
41:58Marquez is doing so many different things in this fight compared to the first he's jabbing
42:02He's actually counter-punching. He's shooting right uppercuts, but seemingly his head punches that little straight shot right hand through
42:08the center
42:10For Marquez that first fight
42:12It was a kind of breakthrough fight. He had always considered himself
42:17Inferior to his brother
42:19Lesser-known than his brother
42:21He was a top featherweight prospect and now
42:26One of the higher ranking featherweights
42:28And that was a breakthrough and and he thinks now that he could be a fighter and he's been fighting
42:34in a very positive
42:35Confident way right from the start
42:39He's very right. Well, he said that in the interview yesterday and seemingly he did a lot of work in
42:45between the last fight
42:47To try to attain that also and he's got a good brother for a spare partner because he thought of
42:52experience with all of his life
43:08You see the confidence growing
43:18And Johnson goes down I
43:23See the look at Johnson's added. I saw the lectures as well. Oh, let me the second fight when we
43:27thought
43:28Aaron Prime
43:28Is this with it? It'll be another test of survival here for Mark Tusharpe Johnson
43:35Letting the eighth round
43:37Marquez connects with the right hand
43:39Tony Riech wins it off
43:44Stunning developments Mark Tusharpe Johnson knocked down three times by Raphael Marquez in their Bantamweight rematch
43:57The bout being stopped in the eighth round
44:02At the two minute
44:0441 second mark
44:09Mark Johnson a fighter who never got
44:12All the credit he deserved
44:15Because he fought in the lower weight divisions where very few American fighters have
44:20Ever been popular and now it looks like he's
44:25reached the end
44:29Fortunately he says he has a number of businesses that give him an income and
44:36That he can afford to retire
44:53Marquez told us in the first bout right even though Johnson threw a lot of punches
44:59He didn't feel much power
45:01Marquez is doing so many different things in this fight, and it was very difficult for
45:06Johnson to keep up with him at the combination that was two body shots two different angles and then the
45:12right hand over the top
45:13But it right hand didn't even really matter
45:15Yeah, and he went down in a delayed way sort of like a parachute that opened
45:20After he had jumped out of the plane
45:23The right he was gone. I think the body punch from the first half left hook you never recuperated that
45:29left hook
45:35Marquez is a much improved fighter
45:40The smaller division is getting to be a red-hot division now. We got tapia
45:45I'm here now. We have a newcomer
45:53All right, let's set it into Michael buffer now for the official decision
45:58Ladies and gentlemen referee Tony weeks waves off the ten count and calls a halt to the bout the official
46:05time in two minutes
46:06Of 41 seconds of round number eight the winner by knockout victory. He is now the u.s. Be a
46:13band of weight champion
46:14The still that they may go
46:16Rafael Marquez
46:28So Rafael Marquez knocks out mark two sharp Johnson in the eighth round. Let's take a look at the final
46:35punch stat numbers
46:37Marquez almost doubling his output and landed punches throwing 413 to 389 for Johnson and landing at a 38 percent
46:46Clip clip
46:48Let's take a look at the power punches here though
46:52The power definitely improved for Marquez in the latter rounds 4th 5th 6th 7th and 8th rounds 109 out of
47:00253
47:01Johnson
47:02Connected at 53 percent, but it was Marquez
47:05Who landed the more powerful blows all right Larry, let's talk about
47:10Rafael Marquez what kind of future do you think he has in the bantamweight division?
47:14Well, he's he's got a future to look ahead to a fight with Tim Austin who's recognized as the bantamweight
47:21champion of the world
47:22He's got the kind of style and now we're seeing the kind of
47:26skills to go with it that that shapes up as a
47:31good tough fight
47:34Manny mark two sharp Johnson you mentioned it when he spoke to us yesterday
47:38He talked a lot about retirement about the businesses that he already has set up
47:43What does this mean for mark two sharp Johnson?
47:45Well without a doubt mark two sharp job is going to quit boxing. I was just my guarantee the fact
47:50I was
47:51Trying to drift him out of that conversation yesterday during the interview
47:54I think he lost the fight tonight, but he didn't look that bad
47:57It's just that he fought a very good fight who came in very well prepared and did so many different
48:02things and he was just totally
48:04He actually he was having problems even at boxing Marquez
48:07Marquez was very sharp and ready for this fight and I think you're gonna see a lot more of
48:13Him improving much like the room okay, so the action started off slowly
48:17But it certainly picked up and it picked up big time in favor of Raphael Marquez still to come though
48:22our main event
48:23Another rematch 122 pounds Paulie Ayala looks to make it two wins in a row over Clarence Bones-Adams
48:31That's coming up. Let's take a look at some highlights of the first time these two met back in august
48:37Of last year and in the second round it was that left hook to the chin from Paulie Ayala
48:42That caught Bones-Adams and Adams desperately tried to hang on
48:47Ayala coming back with more in the second round all three judges scored it a 10-8 round
48:53But Adams was able to stabilize himself
48:57Throwing hard shots, but also
48:59Doing more boxing moving around the ring
49:04Intense action all the way through in the 11th a headbutt though from Paulie Ayala
49:10Opens up a big gash over the left eye of Bones-Adams, but Adams
49:16Wouldn't surrender and in the 12th round it was all Bones-Adams
49:21Paulie Ayala's corner told him he had won the fight
49:25Adams doing everything he can winning 10-9 on all three judges scorecards
49:31But it was Ayala taking the close split decision
49:35Paulie Ayala is no stranger to close decisions his last six fights have gone the full 12 championship rounds and
49:44each time
49:45It's been Ayala who's come out victorious now
49:47He says he doesn't get enough credit for his defense. He says he blocks most of those shots
49:52But opponents say they scream of favoritism and Bones-Adams, Emanuel is one of those opponents who screams of favoritism
50:00Bones came into the last fight
50:03Deciding to be a puncher and not his normal boxing self. He thought he won the fight
50:07Many people believe he did win the fight. Should he change anything tonight?
50:11Well, first we'll go to his favoritism
50:13He said the reason that he's also all being persecuted so much is a lot because he's a white boy
50:18It's a minority in boxing today in particular
50:20The fact that the Hispanics are getting such ratings on TV, so he's
50:25Endangered special so to say
50:26But I think that he will come in and try to box more tonight
50:30I think that bones is going to try to change up
50:32And he may not do much better than johnson did when johnson tried to box tonight
50:36I think that Ayala is going to come in and put a lot of pressure on him
50:40But those are the short punches trying to crowd him and bones is going to have to punch a little
50:45bit
50:45He's going to have to do what he did to some degree the last fight
