00:24Tough young scrappers eager to make their name and hungry to make their mark.
00:28Now watch them chase their dreams in the ring when Antonio Diaz takes on John Michael Johnson.
00:33Plus Olympic star Panchito Bojado on Showbox.
00:37The new generation, next, only on Showtime.
01:02Welcome to the United Palace in Washington Heights, New York City, for an afternoon of professional boxing.
01:11Ladies and gentlemen, this is Showbox, the new generation.
01:20There's nobody going to give you nothing for nothing.
01:22You've got to work for what you care.
01:26You've got to get those shots off.
01:27Left hook, right hand, foot hands up, foot hands up.
01:30Go!
01:31Go out there, focus on the job that has to be done.
01:36This is what it takes to be champions.
01:37This is what it takes. Right here, baby.
01:39Opportunity only in every one. Let's go.
01:56This week on Showbox, the new generation.
01:59We're way uptown Saturday in New York City.
02:02This is the United Palace on 175th and Broadway in the Washington Heights neighborhood on the Upper West Side of
02:08Manhattan.
02:08It's a warm day in New York, and inside the ring, we expect it to be sizzling.
02:15Our main event will feature Antonio Cello Diaz of New York City, taking on former WBA Bantamweight champion John Michael
02:22Johnson.
02:24And we'll start things off with some more local flavor.
02:28Unbeaten Brooklyn welterweight Luis Collazo against Luis Alberto Santiago.
02:34Hello again, everybody.
02:35I'm Nick Charles with Steve Farhood, and welcome to Showbox, the new generation.
02:39Big city boxing and a big apple.
02:41It has a nice ring to it.
02:43And our main event, John Michael Johnson, the former champion of the world against Antonio Cello Diaz,
02:48has the potential to be engaging Steve for a couple of reasons.
02:51First, of course, their style.
02:53But also, I think perhaps the more important, strongest dynamic at play here is what's at stake for both guys.
02:59I agree, Nick.
03:00These fighters are two ships in the New York City harbor, seemingly passing each other in different directions.
03:05John Michael Johnson, 33 years old, he's fought only one fight in three consecutive years.
03:11Worse yet, he's coming here to Cello Diaz's backyard to fight here, and he's not at his best weight.
03:16He's really a Bantamweight, not a featherweight.
03:18You want more?
03:19A drug user since the age of 14, he's been clean for only two years.
03:23John Michael Johnson's been overcoming the odds his entire career.
03:26Cello Diaz, on the other hand, he's the local guy.
03:29He can box his way to a victory.
03:31Even though he's already had one shot at a world title, he's perceived as a fighter moving up.
03:37But Johnson's fought much better opposition, Nick, so it's close to a pick-em fight.
03:41So two featherweights at a fight with heavyweight implications for both.
03:45That's coming up a little later in our broadcast as the main event.
03:48We had expected to start off our first fight by showing you 18-year-old rising star, Panchito Bojato.
03:55However, this past week, Bojato was knocked out for the first time in his young pro career.
04:00It wasn't a traditional opponent, though.
04:03It was tonsillitis.
04:04So we wish Panchito a speedy recovery because we hope to see him very soon again on Showbox, the new
04:09generation.
04:10As a result, it's now showtime for a couple of 20-year-old welterweights.
04:15It's Luis Collazo against Luis Alberto Santiago, who will be asked, both of them, to possibly go eight rounds for
04:22the first time in their careers.
04:24Luis Alberto Santiago was born in Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico, and now fights out of Philadelphia as you're looking at
04:30him.
04:30He's the baby of the two here, 17 days younger than his opponent, Luis Collazo.
04:35Santiago moved to the U.S. just a year ago.
04:37He's 7-1 with three knockouts, and since suffering his only defeat last January, he's run off five straight victories,
04:44Steve.
04:44Take us behind the numbers of Luis Alberto Santiago.
04:47Hey, you see, Santiago, 7-1 with three knockouts.
04:51Inexperience is a big factor.
04:52He's been six rounds only once.
04:53This fight is scheduled for eight, and he must learn to pace himself and ration his energy.
04:58As far as staying busy, this will be his eighth start of the year.
05:01For a 20-year-old fighter, that's what it takes to learn to be a solid pro.
05:06And learning from a loss, well, his lone loss came in January to prospect Freddy Cadena.
05:10And in that bout, his weaknesses, including a porous defense and a lack of patience, were exposed.
05:15He must show he's learned from that experience.
05:16And he will be taking on Luis Collazo, who could have taken the subway from his home in Brooklyn here
05:22to 175th Street.
05:23You're looking at him there.
05:24Collazo, definitely the guy with home court advantage.
05:27This will be his tenth appearance in New York since he turned pro 15 months ago.
05:31Like Santiago, Collazo spent most of his time either fighting or training since turning pro.
05:36This will be his eighth fight this year.
05:38He's 12-0 with six KOs.
05:41Steve, what are behind those numbers?
05:43Well, Collazo is an older 20 years old than Santiago.
05:47What I mean by that is he's 20, but he's fought more rounds as a pro and has had a
05:50far more extensive amateur career than Santiago.
05:54While he's never been eight rounds, he's been six on four different occasions.
05:57As far as stance advantage, Collazo is a south ball.
05:59That can be confusing for any fighter, but especially one as young and inexperienced as Santiago.
06:04And finally, remains unbeaten.
06:06Collazo hasn't lost as a pro, and Santiago has.
06:09That gives Collazo a potential advantage in focus and confidence.
06:12Luis Collazo, then, is about to find out if he can stretch that unbeaten record one more natch.
06:17He told us he's eager to learn something new in every fight, but he's not about to learn the hard
06:21way by losing today.
06:23Standing in Collazo's way, the once-beaten Luis Alberto Santiago, who is excited about the exposure he's about to receive.
06:30We're just about ready to roll here at the United Palace, so let's go up to the middle of the
06:34ring where Ron Duncan has the introductions.
06:42Ladies and gentlemen, once again, we welcome you to the United Palace in Washington Heights, New York City for showtime
06:50and main events as they present professional boxing at its best.
06:54Now that it is time to put up and shut up, get down and throw down, there's going to be
06:59a beatdown on Showbox, the next generation.
07:03This bout is scheduled for eight rounds in the welterweight division.
07:08Your judges for this bout are George Colon, Melvina Latham, and Luis Rivera.
07:15Your referee is Mike Ortega.
07:20First introducing, in the blue corner, wearing the red and blue trunks, weighing in at 147 and a half pounds,
07:29this young man's record is an outstanding one.
07:31At seven wins, one loss, and three knockoffs.
07:35From Juanadilla, Puerto Rico, now I'm fighting out of Philadelphia, Luis Alberto Santiago.
07:47His opponent, in the red corner, wearing the blue and silver trunks, this young man weighed in at 149 pounds.
07:57He is undefeated at 12 wins, no losses, and six big knockouts.
08:04From Brooklyn, New York, Luis Collazo.
08:10Eight rounds of boxing in the welterweight division.
08:13Your referee is Mike Ortega.
08:24Good, clean fight.
08:26Protect yourself at all times.
08:27Obey my commands at all times.
08:28Touch them up.
08:29Good luck to both of you.
08:33Okay, Steve.
08:34We're about ready to go.
08:35Tail of the tape.
08:37Colazzo and Santiago, both 20-year-old welterweights, and really, as you see, the numbers, very little to choose between.
08:47The weight is inconsequential, the reach inconsequential.
08:50The only difference here is Colazzo's experience.
08:52I think he's had a better amateur experience being a quarterfinalist in the 2000 U.S. Olympic trials.
08:57All right, we look at the rules.
08:58Ten-point must system.
08:59There are three judges.
09:01The three knockdown rules, in effect, there's no standing eight count here in New York.
09:05Only the referee can stop the fight, and you can't be saved by the bell in any round, as we
09:09are about to go.
09:10And we go up to the middle of the ring.
09:12Mike Ortega, the referee, is about to call the fighters into action for the first round.
09:26It's Colazzo in the blue, and Santiago's in red.
09:40Feeling out, want to see what they have, what a guy has, and what he could do.
09:44First round, though, is dangerous, Steve.
09:47Well, Santiago, from what we saw on tapes, Nick, the right hand is his big weapon,
09:51which, by the way, is not a bad weapon to have against the southpaw,
09:54because in the tapes we saw of Colazzo, and haven't seen Colazzo live, he does get hit with right hands.
09:59So, that bodes well for Santiago.
10:01Well, again, a southpaw, and one time Santiago's face to southpaw, KO'd him in the first round.
10:06He's moving to his left, which is good.
10:10You get that outside foot there and stay away from the right-handed power.
10:16And they mix it up in the corner, pop out to the middle of the ring.
10:21Santiago, his chin's sticking out, though, as he goes after Colazzo.
10:30Colazzo just touching with the jab, trying to work off it.
10:34He goes to the body and misses up high as a right sails wide.
10:39Santiago in the red, hands held high.
10:43Is the body open, though, Steve?
10:46Well, if Santiago's going to hold his gloves up by his head in the earmuff defense, yes.
10:51A shot right to the midsection will be there.
10:53You can see his midsection is open to be hit by a straight left hand.
11:00We're early in the fight, but halfway through round one,
11:04Luis Colazzo's unbeaten, he's in the blue.
11:06The southpaw circling to his left now, and now he'll go right.
11:11Tries a combination there.
11:15Santiago's a lot more patient than what we saw on film.
11:18When a kid is like Santiago, he's fighting seven, eight, nine, ten times in a year,
11:23and he's only 20, it can be a pretty dramatic improvement over the course of one year.
11:27Older fighters have trouble breaking habits,
11:29but Santiago's showing a lot more patience than we saw earlier, where he was totally reckless.
11:33And Colazzo takes one to the gut there, right hand.
11:35Nice, solid right hook, but does feint and try to not be as predictable
11:40and be a little bit more creative as he scores with a combination there.
11:44Colazzo's in the blue, Santiago in red.
11:46Early in the fight, about a half minute to go in round one.
11:51Now it's Colazzo who's doing the stalking.
11:56Said he's going to learn to use the jab more and be more seriously committed, Steve,
12:00but so far...
12:03Fight!
12:03Not much in that department.
12:05No, Santiago's really been controlling the pace so far.
12:08He's fighting when he wants to fight, he's moving like he is now when he wants to move.
12:15Santiago absorbs a right hand.
12:18Five seconds to go in round one.
12:32As we look at Luis Scalazzo of Brooklyn, New York, we talked yesterday and this is what the game plan
12:38was heading into the ring.
12:41Be a little busy, be a little busy, all right? Take up the count a little bit with the punches.
12:43I saw a lot of openings when he fights. He leads with his right hand, like a counter punch, come
12:48with the uppercut hooks.
12:49He runs around a lot. He runs around a lot and he can't take it to the body.
12:55Now he's going to put the pressure, work the body, slow him down. Later rounds, just try to take him
13:00out.
13:05And as we get ready for the second round, that's Colazzo's game plan.
13:09Albert Santiago, Steve, told us he's going to feel out, see what kind of power Colazzo has.
13:14He's ready to go eight, but if he feels he's the stronger guy, he's going to try and take him
13:18out.
13:18But that was definitely a feeling out process.
13:23It's up to Colazzo to counter punch. That's what he does best.
13:27And when Santiago throws that right hand, Colazzo would like to counter with his left.
13:31That's what I would look for. It sometimes takes a round or two to get in the rhythm, to find
13:34the timing to counter punch.
13:36Well, Santiago's been down before early in his career and suffering his only loss.
13:42He did battle back, but he vows to work on defense because he was in no man's land a lot
13:46of that fight.
13:53One thing that happens repeatedly when Southpaw's fight right-handed fighters, they step on each other's feet.
13:58You can see how close their feet are.
14:01And that causes balance problems.
14:03Right now, it's Santiago, continuing to dig to the body and then going upstairs and catching Colazzo with that right
14:09hand.
14:11Colazzo continues to pursue, and they trade again.
14:16Santiago takes a shot to the ribs and fires the right again. That's his bigger punch.
14:22Nice uppercuts there by Colazzo as he definitely does a little damage.
14:27And the flurry is on as they trade in the center of the ring.
14:38Looks like Colazzo might have the advantage on the inside, but I think he's a little bit surprised that Santiago's
14:44moving as much.
14:45I don't think he came in judging by what he told us yesterday.
14:47I don't think he came in the ring thinking he would have to chase down his opponent.
14:52Well, Stephen, Santiago's only loss, he did get outgunned when they went to war and continued to trade.
14:58That may not be the best strategy against this guy who has, I think, very nice hand speed, Colazzo.
15:06Right hand slams, though, and he follows up with two more as Colazzo falls back onto the ropes and tries
15:13to take a breather there as he clinches and holds.
15:16And Mike Ortega, the referee, breaks him up, but here comes Santiago on the attack, punishing overhand right hands as
15:23he continues to break through.
15:26So he's finding the cracks, definitely, in Colazzo's armor.
15:29Colazzo's in the blue and under siege here in round two.
15:36You knew it would be a right hand.
15:38That's the punch for Santiago.
15:43And here comes Colazzo, not content to wait the counter to try to make the play a little bit and
15:48take some of the steam out of Santiago's engine.
15:52Santiago eats a right hand there.
15:54And another one.
15:56And takes a shot to the body, an uppercut.
15:59Good exchange here in the middle.
16:04Colazzo landing those sweeping right hands, but soaking up shots of his own.
16:12Colazzo marked under the right eye.
16:17Uppercut by Santiago and a spirited finish to round two.
16:44He can't fight backing up.
16:46Kick your legs straight out.
16:48He got it over there.
17:01Lock that right hook, please.
17:03Kick your legs out straight.
17:04Second round, dominated really from one punch.
17:07There it is.
17:07Colazzo almost down.
17:08That's the punch he used against the southpaw.
17:10And then later in the round, really a spirited exchange.
17:14Colazzo attacking.
17:18And both guys land heavily here.
17:19But you know what?
17:20Even though both land in this exchange, to me, the one punch by Santiago was enough to give him the
17:26round.
17:26Not quite an air of desperation, Steve, in Luis Colazzo's corner.
17:29But they told him he's got to jab.
17:31Pick up those punches and not stand around.
17:32He gets clocked what he does.
17:34And there he tries the looping right hand to open the show here in round three.
17:38Colazzo's in blue, Santiago's in red.
17:41Move to your left, son.
17:43Move to your left.
17:45Move to your left.
17:46Move to your left.
17:47Move to your left.
17:47Move to your left.
17:49Yeah, good strategy being yelled at by the corner.
17:51By the way, you know, corner coaching is illegal.
17:53But no one pays attention to that.
17:55We're getting a good dose of it, though, aren't we?
17:57But that Santiago's people telling him, move to the left, not the right.
18:00Because if you move to the left, you move away from the southpaw's power.
18:04And Santiago right now, again.
18:07Trying to establish his credentials in round three.
18:10And Colazzo was the one backing up.
18:11But now he's got Santiago on the ropes.
18:14Santiago fires a right that misses.
18:15But he's off and in the middle of the ring again.
18:18Can't say I love the fact that Colazzo is boxing with his hands by his sides.
18:22But...
18:25They both told us they vowed to use the jab, Steve.
18:28But that's a...
18:29We always hear that cry from fighters.
18:31It's just a perennial cry.
18:33But are they really doing enough?
18:35Good combination there by Colazzo.
18:37Nice tight guard with Santiago.
18:39Stepping back.
18:40Making Colazzo come to him.
18:41Fighting a very controlled fight, Santiago is.
18:49Now Colazzo's moving to the right.
18:52Which is what he wants.
18:56This corner imploring him to jab again and get that hand speed into play and have everything come behind him.
19:11Santiago, the macho kicks in immediately when he gets tagged, Steve.
19:16And he was getting tagged there.
19:18But now it's Colazzo and Blue taking the punishment.
19:20But he digs that right-hand uppercut to the ribs and fights his way off the ropes beautifully.
19:25A little more body work this round by Colazzo.
19:32Good idea.
19:41It doesn't look like that mark on the Colazzo's right eye is a problem.
19:44A little mouse.
19:50Colazzo trying to work in behind the jab there.
19:52Doubles up and then tried the left.
19:56It's a way to close distance, though, Steve, and blind an opponent to what's next.
19:59But you've got to work your punches off it.
20:04That's what the corner wants him to do.
20:10Colazzo again makes.
20:11Santiago pays.
20:12Pay with an inside left that does some damage.
20:18As we come to the end of round three.
20:21Good exchange in the corner here.
20:23It's all Colazzo there.
20:33He only know one way.
20:34It's a move.
20:35When he stops, he's going to punt.
20:36Okay, and our interpreter in the corner, Rafael Nunez.
20:41Take a deep breath.
20:43There's only one way he can do it.
20:44He moves, moves, and then when he's ready to punch, he's going to stop.
20:46Every time he comes to a stop, you know he's ready to punch.
20:49You got a chance?
20:51You got to do what we worked on.
20:53You got to throw the right hand to the body and left hook to the head.
20:56You got to take a chance with this kid, man.
20:59Look at Santiago in the corner.
21:01That was a hot pace for him, and he got the worst of that, Steve.
21:04You rest on me that round, baby.
21:06You feel good?
21:08Come on.
21:09You in shape.
21:10Hands up high.
21:11Come on.
21:21All right, Steve, we got ready.
21:23That definitely, let me bait you, definitely was Colasso's round.
21:27Yeah, first round I've given him, no doubt.
21:30Didn't get hit with too many right hands there.
21:32Why?
21:32Why?
21:33What made him a different fighter in that round?
21:35He took his corner's advice?
21:37You know, he punched the body for the first time, really, in the fight, and kept enough distance, didn't get
21:43hit with the right hand.
21:44He's walking in.
21:44He has to walk in because his opponent is drawing him in.
21:47What he has to do is keep his hands up so he doesn't get hit with those right hands.
21:51That, to me, that really is the only chance for Santiago is to land that right hand again and again.
21:57But he should never be in a position, should he, to score with a right hand lead.
22:01So, you work behind the jab, you at least stop that and stay busy.
22:05There you go.
22:06Colasso trying to do just that now, it seems.
22:08Put punches together.
22:13That was a right uppercut, now.
22:18There's the instructions from the corner, Steve.
22:20Jab and the uppercut.
22:22Come on, Lou.
22:23Keep the jab on.
22:23Keep the jab on.
22:24Come on.
22:25Nobody jab in there.
22:26There you go.
22:26All the time.
22:27He got to stop and punch, Lou.
22:30He getting ready to punch.
22:32See that?
22:32He getting ready to punch when he stops.
22:33Seems in the corner of Santiago.
22:35They were speaking English.
22:36Nick, yesterday, all Spanish.
22:38Nobody understood, yeah.
22:40Santiago's lived here.
22:41He lives in Philadelphia with his sister.
22:42He's been in the United States just a year.
22:46From Puerto Rico.
22:47That's it.
22:48There you go.
22:49Now, Colasso going to the body.
22:51You got to punch with this kid.
22:52You in New York.
22:53He's going to jump at you, Lou.
22:54Watch him.
22:54There he come.
22:55You can see him all night when he's coming.
22:58Just a jab, jab.
23:00He's never been in there like this.
23:01Come on.
23:02You got to watch him.
23:02He's going to stop and jump.
23:05They were giving you babies for work.
23:08Right there.
23:10Left hand to the body.
23:12There you go.
23:14There's that lead right hand again.
23:16Colasso's having trouble landing his jab
23:17because he's having trouble with the fist
23:19that Santiago's creating.
23:22Santiago with a lead right to the body there.
23:28Scheduled for eight.
23:29They've never been eight.
23:30Nice right hand by Santiago again.
23:34Right hand.
23:35And look at Santiago.
23:35Staying off the ropes.
23:36He got back to the ropes.
23:37Spun right off.
23:38Good idea.
23:39Right hand.
23:42Steve, as we approach the halfway mark
23:45of this potential eight-round fight,
23:46who looks like the fresher fighter here?
23:49I think they both look fresh.
23:50You know, they're 20-year-old kids.
23:51They've never been eight.
23:53Neither one seems tired.
23:55They're both able to throw punches and bunches
23:56when necessary.
23:57Colasso turning up the juice now.
23:59He's in the blue.
24:01Scores with that sweeping left cross.
24:07Nice move.
24:23All right.
24:26Time back here.
24:27Coming to a close of round four.
24:29And there goes Santiago.
24:30Lacing some combinations together.
24:32Streamlined right hand.
24:33Followed by a left.
24:35Scores with the right.
24:38Good exchange there as they close it out in style.
24:45A little mano-a-mano there, Steve.
24:51Well, coming up in two weeks on Showtime Championship Boxing,
24:54it's the big boys.
24:56Heavyweights and a title elimination bout.
24:58David Tuamantua, ranked number one by the IBF,
25:01takes on number two IBF-ranked and former WBO champion,
25:05heavyweight champion Chris Bird.
25:06The winner becomes the mandatory challenger for the heavyweight champion.
25:10The co-feature then, NABF featherweight champion,
25:14Robbie Pettin, will defend his title and fight for the vacant USBA crown
25:18when he takes on IBF number three featherweight contender,
25:21Augie Sanchez.
25:22Catch the exciting action from the Cox Pavilion
25:24at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas on Saturday, August 18th
25:28at a special time, 11 o'clock Eastern and Pacific.
25:33Four in the book, Steve, as we go to the fifth round here.
25:38It's Luis Collazo in the blue.
25:40Can't wait to get back.
25:41It's Santiago here.
25:43There was a little war of words there at the end of round four.
25:48And they pick up the pace immediately.
25:50And Collazo predicted a fourth or fifth round knockout.
25:54Stoppage, exactly.
25:55Well, the fourth has come and gone, so he's got the fifth to do it.
25:58We're into the next, we're into a little bit deeper water here, Steve.
26:01There you go.
26:02Santiago scores with a right, but eats a right in return.
26:05Can't try it.
26:06Downstairs, get it.
26:08Get down.
26:09Let him out.
26:10Let him out.
26:11Stop holding him.
26:11Come on.
26:13Good pace to this fight.
26:14There's that right-hand lead by Santiago.
26:16I still don't understand why he doesn't work behind the jab, Steve.
26:20Yeah, good counterpunch by Klaasso.
26:21Lots of times against the South, that jab is just a range finder, you know?
26:24It's tough to land.
26:25Got the big shoulder in front of you.
26:28And Collazo, effective with this awkward movement coming in,
26:30but I don't like the hands down low.
26:32This is a Pernell-Whitaker move, but I don't think he's Pernell-Whitaker.
26:35Exactly.
26:35And that's just asking to be hit with the right lead.
26:37Come on, Lou.
26:38You ready to go, baby.
26:39Come on.
26:39Step around and punch him.
26:41There you go, man.
26:42See, Collazo's trying to sucker Santiago into leading so Collazo can count.
26:46Santiago knows his range, as you said.
26:48Knows, understands his zone.
26:50And said, if it's not there, I'm not going to hang my chin out the drive.
26:53Let's go.
26:53And walk into a punch.
26:57Now, there's the jab on the right, and they tie up.
27:03We're in round five, scheduled for eight.
27:05Luis Collazo is unbeaten from Brooklyn, New York.
27:08He's in the blue.
27:09And Luis Alberto Santiago out of Philadelphia in red.
27:17Santiago's nickname, El Asesino, given to him by Tim Witherspoon.
27:21That means the assassin?
27:22Yes.
27:25Oh, nice left hand by Collazo there.
27:28Santiago just stopped punching.
27:31That's exactly it.
27:32He was waiting.
27:35There's the right hand.
27:37But again, it's a lead.
27:38Not much behind that jab.
27:43Uppercut exchange there, and then that overhand left by Collazo scores.
27:50Inside a minute to go in round five, and the pace is good in this one.
27:54These are welterweights.
27:56Collazo's unbeaten.
27:57Santiago's been beaten just once.
28:00There goes the hook.
28:02The right hook trying to land.
28:03Collazo going to that right hook.
28:05First high, and then he goes to the ribs and connects down low.
28:10Collazo trying to measure Santiago.
28:12Maybe he senses he hurt him there, Steve.
28:14I don't know.
28:16Well, Nick, this fight is going to be decided in the second half, no doubt.
28:19I have it even after four.
28:20I think Collazo may be winning this round.
28:22Those right hook count is a real nice.
28:24Good exchange there.
28:26Collazo coming on big there, but it's Santiago stalking.
28:31Trying to make it happen in round five.
28:36Action picks up a good pace here as they close out the fifth.
28:41All right, let's go.
28:47Doing your thing, baby.
28:48Taking that second half.
28:50All right.
28:52Let's go.
28:53Stay still.
28:59I was fine, right?
29:01I was fine.
29:02We'll run.
29:03Are you ready?
29:04.
29:08.
29:09.
29:09.
29:09.
29:13.
29:14.
29:18.
29:36stay there telling collazo in the corner pressure use that left hand every time you throw it step to
29:41the side throw it again let's see if he does he's in blue and he's undefeated but he's in for
29:47a
29:47this has been a good fight this is no cakewalk for either guy the funny thing Nick is his success
29:53that last round was on the right hook so throw the left hand fine but throw the right hook then
29:57the left because he really won that last round on the right hooks
30:06Santiago with a scores with a right there he drilled that right hand behind the jab
30:19good combination there by collazo as the sweat pours off
30:26five punch combination by Santiago as he looks fresh again round six scheduled for eight
30:33Santiago trying to seize the momentum back in this fight good having flow Steve Santiago's left eye
30:38swelling Collazo's letting Santiago take the play away he has to punch back Santiago's corner is pleading
30:52with him and he's executing exactly what they're saying going to the body and staying active
30:58all right hand all right hand dig in there yes Santiago went southpaw for a minute still looks like he's
31:06squared up too much Steve
31:08leave it up just trying to drill him with the right
31:15when a fighter starts to connect with the right and he's missing there's there's a solid right hand by collazo
31:23what is he abandoning everything else Santiago just get a little macho with that right hand well I'd like to
31:30see
31:30him back to the body a little bit that right hook is the shot for collazo you're right Steve this
31:35is a tough round to score
31:36whoever wins the third minute of this round wins the round well we've got a minute to go and the
31:42best round of the
31:42fight it looks so far round six it's been back and forth heavy-duty two-way action
31:49Santiago looks like he's taking a breather a little bit here yeah he might be hurt he was backing up
31:54and he was holding behind the head he was just warned for it but here he comes again
32:00getting a little sloppy with his punches that's what we saw in his one loss to cadena he starts lunging
32:04in with
32:05his shot collazo teeing off and scoring with the uppercut here sweeping right hand
32:14Santiago wants to hold collazo won't let him that's Santiago soaking up shots and we're in retreat right
32:19now collazo whistling the crosses and trying to come with that old uppercut
32:32keep in mind neither guy has ever been past six rounds they will be now as we close out round
32:41six
32:50looking like a million dollars are you working there you got it you listening to me baby
33:33Steve really interesting stuff in the corner being said collazo they want him to work the left you're the champ
33:37it's New York you're the guy here but again
33:39Santiago they're saying you got to go for broke here with the right hand and knock him out well
33:45that last minute I remember I said to whoever wins the last minute of that sixth round will win the
33:49round turned
33:49out to be the best minute of the fight for collazo let's see if collazo and blue he's unbeaten goes
33:55with
33:55the left hand a little more he has scored with the right consistently in Santiago let's see if he tries
34:00to
34:00unleash that evening ending right hand which is what his corner wants him to do both fighters with their arms
34:06on the
34:07ropes resting between rounds that's a cardinal sin I'm surprised the trainers told him not to you don't
34:10breathe as much air and your shoulders get tired when your arms are resting on the ropes as tempting
34:15as that is to do when you're tired well now collazo slips out of there work rate is excellent in
34:24this
34:24fight again there are no man's land here unchartered waters seventh round they've never been here
34:31but the pace is still fairly intense Steve there's that right hand by collazo and blue
34:39Santiago in retreat now as he soaks up a couple of right hands
34:44doing a lot of holding now Santiago he's discouraged mouth looks like it might be a
34:50little bit more open which is a sure sign of danger but he's breathing harder there's that big right by
34:55Santiago and red and it does appear as this Santiago has taken his corners advice to heart you gotta
35:05land the right the knock is what knocked the lights out here there's the right that lands but it doesn't
35:11discourage collazo and blue pause with the right trying to time that left there's the combination
35:21landing by collazo a couple of right hands this round by Santiago just not enough you know he's
35:32concentrating either moving back or clenching collazo has Santiago in the corner is Santiago and red tries
35:38the battle back but he's holding now and he looks like the more tired fighter inside a minute to go
35:44in
35:44round seven good exchange as Santiago lets it all hang out there with some good body work and again
35:50tries the uppercut but eats a couple of punches in return collazo punching and feinting Steve just a
35:58busier guy here busier guy better upper body movement his legs still look pretty good maybe the fact that
36:04Santiago's been six rounds only once prior to this fight comes into play right now 30 seconds to go in
36:13round seven both guys look a little tired to me Steve no Hector Camacho spin move by collazo you know
36:23collazo's tough he's from Brooklyn Nick come on that's right you should know trains right outside in Coney
36:28Island I could never training Coney Island because I'd be training on Nathan's and you can't do that he
36:33doesn't need Nathan's hot dogs tough kid collazo get busier fighter against this round as we go to the end
36:42of
36:42seven Steve how do you have it so far 68 65 for collazo I haven't given Santiago any rounds since
36:50round
36:50two Santiago needs a knockout then according to Steve Farhood and we can't assume what the three judges are
36:57saying those are not the three judges is that right oh unfortunately they're not
37:04but they are in under intense scrutiny let's put it that way
37:12it's good teamwork isn't it they've obviously choreographed this very well
37:20even right now last round last round touch him up
37:40Steve desperation time for Santiago but if you're winning
37:43this fight as you say collazo is what do you do it's only an eight round fight he had a
37:48slow start
37:49he can't be careful he has to be aggressive he can't be sure you know on my card one round
37:52different
37:53hey it's an even fight so collazo has to keep doing what he's doing keep throwing more punches
37:57and attack let's see if he does it as he snakes a jab that falls short tries it again looks
38:03like he's
38:04going to want a box though this round Santiago trying to close the distance and unload that right hand
38:10and he's chasing collazo around the ring with an air of desperation
38:21corner telling collazo be smart don't run in any punch it'll turn this fight around
38:27with one shot and there's Santiago trying to land that right and hitting the mark
38:35he's just waiting for one point baby come on
38:41yeah Santiago's technique is starting to suffer and he's lunging reaching
38:45and collazo should counter him huh steve but not play it safe his chin is hanging wide open
38:50get low get low get low get low baby push it push it push it not much of a body
38:55attack by collazo
38:56i know it's the eighth round but if that's where the opening is go for it you see Santiago they
39:00have
39:00the body attack winging shot so neither guy has been eight rounds but certainly Luis
39:06collazo in the blue is unbeaten and he's got plenty of second wind it looks like here
39:12minute and a half for Santiago Alberto Santiago in red to do something and pull this one out
39:18come on because the consensus is he needs a knockout and if collazo indeed does win a decision
39:24a good win because he had to adjust this wasn't an easy fight for him getting hit by right hands
39:29those first two rounds he lost the first two rounds on my card anyway and he's adjusted he's made a
39:33lot
39:33of uh adjustments to take over the fight Santiago with a minute to go runs into a right hand and
39:44another
39:44but he keeps on charging as he loses his mouthpiece now now the referee's job mike ortega he calls time
39:53his job is to replace wash and replace the mouthpiece when there's a low in the action
40:02going to have to wash that mouthpiece off again
40:13Santiago with a right there he has got to just hit him with a
40:18there you go there you go there you go with a home run shot here gotta clear the bases steve
40:25Santiago and red on the verge of suffering the second defeat of his young career
40:31Luis collazo and blue looks on the way to victory
40:36come on a little combination combination get off the rope
40:41there you go there you go
40:46that mouthpiece is going to come out again
40:49mouth is open under 20 seconds to go in this fight
40:53Santiago can't afford to clinch he's got to go for it
41:00as they come to the end of this fight
41:07and on top of the ropes is Luis collazo who's predicting victory
41:12and steve you would say with good reason how do you have it on the score cards as they finish
41:16out
41:17eight rounds i gave class so everything from the third on i have him winning 78 74.
41:23but no lack of effort from Santiago just like his same as the tape we watched which he lost that
41:29fight to cadena earlier this year but he showed a lot of heart in that fight and he did it
41:33again today
41:37everybody back home friends family i love y'all
41:51as we wait for the decisions dave here we see the eighth round and what happened
41:56well you know Santiago knew he had to go for it and by going for it of course all he
41:59did was
42:00give collazo more counter punching opportunities the body punching in the eighth round was the best
42:05throughout the fight that right left was beautiful by collazo taking what the
42:09infighter in front of him gives him and he did enough to take that round
42:18and they both started right hand collazo quicker to the trigger
42:23i'll tell you collazo six ko's and 12 wins not the biggest puncher but santiago's certainly showing
42:29a pretty good chin throughout this fight well collazo going into this fight told us steve the best
42:33thing he thinks santiago does is run i don't agree with that santiago's student fight he just
42:38stood and fought he came to make the play in this fight
42:43these are learning fights 20 year old kids both most of their fights coming in the year 2001 they've both
42:49been real busy and that's how you learn it's a good experience especially for collazo who
42:53as i said before had to adjust well we want to remind you our main event is coming up next
42:57it's
42:58antonio cello diaz who used to live about five minutes from here he's of new york uh lives in new
43:03york right now over in brooklyn he will take on john michael johnson the former wba bantamweight
43:10champion of the world but now the decision as we go to ron duncan
43:15i like a kid ladies and gentlemen now we have the decision by the judges judge melina latham scores
43:23his fight 78-74 judge george cologne scores the fight 78-74 and judge luis rivera scores the fight
43:3278-75 the winner so steve as we look at the victor you've watched this guy he's had a lot
43:58of fights in new york you're a new yorker you're on a boxing scene you see improvement did he step
44:03it up here yeah well i like the adjustment and you know he was just a little more consistent
44:08throughout the fight with his style and he was smart to draw santiago to him and counter punch
44:14and normally southpaws rely on the big left hand he counted with the right hook and it worked for him
44:18and he found that out the way through the fight took advantage of it so i was very impressed with
44:21him
44:21yeah i agree with you i thought the adjustments came fine and i
44:27led with his right he said that he leaned in and he i thought he slipped punches i thought
44:33collazo did very effectively cracked him with that left uppercut scored with the right hook very well
44:38and i thought again that i think the uh the decisive difference i thought collazo's speed just presented
44:45too many problems for santiago yeah speed and punching technique i like the way when he put his
44:50combinations together he didn't lunge he didn't reach he waited for his fighter to be in punching range
44:55and then reacted it's a good win for collazo uh and the judges were right on it about the same
45:02as i
45:02had at 78 74. okay the main event's coming up soon but a reminder fight fans should mark their calendars
