00:01Later in our main event, Joel Casamayor meets Ocelino Freitas, who rose from poverty to become Brazil's third world champion.
00:07There he is with the belt backstage.
00:09Hunger often serves as a fighter's motivation, whether literally or figuratively.
00:14With each knockout he scores, Freitas is further removed from a life he'd like to forget.
00:19His memories, however, are what continue to fuel him.
00:31I think of the past when I slept on the floor and when I didn't have anything to eat at
00:35home.
00:36All the time I still think of all those difficulties I went through in the past, of all the hardships
00:42my family and I have gone through.
00:45Raised in a large Brazilian seaport, Ocelino Freitas and his brothers grew up in poverty as hunger and anger forced
00:51them to fight in the streets.
00:56Yeah, I fought a lot in the streets, all the time.
01:01And I was also always getting into fights in school.
01:04I did it so I could get something to eat.
01:07I'd eat once and then I would cut into line again so I could eat a second time.
01:12I would do this because I knew there was no food in my house and I wanted to make sure
01:16I ate in school.
01:18Wanting a better life for himself and his family, Freitas took his fighting skills from the streets to the gym.
01:24I support my brother's, I support my brother's children, I support my dad, I support my mom, I support everyone.
01:33Everyone in my family, everyone in my house.
01:37But then again, my family's support is what motivates me.
01:40I look at boxing as a job, like a profession.
01:44And as a professional, I know I must strive to win.
01:47After only four years and 19 fights, Freitas won the WBO 130-pound championship,
01:54accomplishing his childhood dream of providing for his family.
01:58I feel like a real champion because I bought my mom a house.
02:04And the championship paid for the house.
02:07Freitas has earned a reputation as one of boxing's biggest power punchers,
02:11winning 29 of his 30 bouts by knockout.
02:13Yet his critics wonder if he's a one-dimensional fighter who has yet to meet top-notch competition.
02:18I think those are people who don't have anything better to do.
02:22They would be better served in a different profession.
02:25They don't pay real attention to boxing and they say anything they want.
02:28For me, the victory is more important than the knockout.
02:31The victory is what counts.
02:32A great champion doesn't just pursue knockouts.
02:36Who can understand the motivations of a champion?
02:38What incites them to rise above mediocrity, to reach for greatness?
02:42For obsolete, Freitas, the answer is simple.
02:47Up until two and a half, three years ago, we were forced to sleep on the floor in a very
02:52small house.
02:54I saw all the difficulties my mother suffered.
02:57She washed other people's homes, clothes, everything.
03:01And that motivates me in the ring because I want to keep my family from going back there again.
03:07You have to have a purpose in life, and mine is to take care of my family.
03:11Everybody.
03:18And later tonight in our featured attraction here in Las Vegas,
03:22Ocelino Freitas goes from those humble beginnings to his biggest payday.
03:26And if he beats Joel Casamayor, the purses will continue to grow until they're as big as all of Brazil.
03:33We close in on our second bout.
03:35Former world champ Wayne McCullough squares off with little-known Alvin Brown in a matchup of 126 powders.
03:42McCullough jumping two weight classes since his last fight over two years back.
03:47Take a look at Alvin Brown out of Kansas City at 32, fighting just five years.
03:51Got a late start at 27.
03:54Mostly nondescript opposition in stark contrast to McCullough,
03:57who's fought nine current or former world champions, Brown losing his last fight.
04:02Skills aside, Bobby, trying to overcome McCullough's experience could be a big problem.
04:07You know, McCullough's experience is excellent.
04:09In a fight like this, it'll always be a huge edge.
04:11But, frankly, Brown will need to deal directly with McCullough's skills and his intensity
04:15because there are more immediate and serious threats.
04:18Brown's going to win this fight.
04:1917 and 4, one no decision, six knockouts.
04:22Inactivity can also factor in for Brown.
04:24This is his first fight in nearly nine months.
04:28But speaking of inactivity, his opponent takes the cake.
04:33Wayne McCullough, tough, gritty McCullough making his way to the ring.
04:37Very popular here.
04:38He's been living here in Las Vegas for about nine years, so it's his adopted home.
04:43A boxing legend in Ireland says he feels unusually nervous, very anxious.
04:47His last fight 27 months ago.
04:50Great action, but a loss to Eric Morales.
04:53Still banned from boxing and written for that aforementioned cyst in his head,
04:57although doctors in the U.S. gave him the go-ahead.
05:00Won the Bantamweight belt in 95 with two defenses, hoping someday to avenge his 12-round loss to Nassim Hamed,
05:07his only other loss to Daniel Zaragoza.
05:09Silver medalist, 92 Olympics, losing to Joel Casamayor.
05:13Given his history, his aggressive straight-ahead style, plus the layoff,
05:17do you expect McCullough to come out as he always does?
05:19You know, Steve, most fighters don't change too much, especially their basic nature.
05:23I expect that McCullough will probably be a little slower.
05:25Been a long layoff.
05:26He might have matured in his thought process a little bit,
05:28and he thinks that maybe if he starts a little slower, it's to his advantage.
05:31But somewhere in the first two or three rounds, he's going to revert back to what got him here.
05:35That's how he's effective.
05:36That's how he wins.
05:38Let's check the numbers as we go to the tail of the tape.
05:42McCullough is now 31.
05:44The height nearly even.
05:46Brown with a three-inch reach advantage at yesterday's weigh,
05:48and McCullough was just under.
05:50Brown just over.
05:51It's a non-title fight.
05:52Tonight, McCullough 132.
05:53Brown 132 as well.
05:55And the key rules for this bout, no standing eight count, no three-knockdown rule.
05:58A fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round.
06:01If an accidental headbutt occurs before the end of the fourth,
06:04it's a technical draw.
06:06After the end of four, they will go to the scorecards.
06:09So here at the Cox Pavilion, getting ready for Wayne McCullough and Alvin Brown,
06:13featherweight scheduled for 10.

07:04All right, fans, here we go with our featherweight special attraction
07:08scheduled for 10 rounds of boxing.
07:12Introducing to you first on my left, fighting out of the blue corner,
07:16entering the ring wearing red trunks, joining us from Kansas City, Missouri.
07:21He weighed in at 127 pounds.
07:25His record stands at 17 wins, four losses, one no decision,
07:30with six wins coming by way of knockout.
07:33Introducing Alvin Slick Nick, the Quickster Brown.
07:40And his opponent ready to fight on my right out of the red corner in this 10-round attraction.
07:45He is wearing black trunks with purple and silver trim,
07:49fighting out of Las Vegas, Nevada, by way of Belfast, Northern Ireland.
07:55His weight, 125 pounds.
07:57His record, 23 wins, three losses, 14 wins coming by way of knockout.
08:03Ladies and gentlemen, here is the former WBC Bantamweight Champion of the World,
08:10known as the Pocket Rocket.
08:13Introducing Wayne McCullough.
08:20And once again, Vic Durekulic, our referee in charge, now the instruction.
08:24Chief second only, Chief second only.
08:27All right, gentlemen, you received your instructions.
08:29Again, I want to caution you.
08:30Any punches below this point will be deemed low.
08:32Any punches below this point will be deemed low.
08:34All right?
08:35With that, are there any questions?
08:36Any questions, Chief second?
08:38Remember, obey my command.
08:39Protect yourselves at all times.
08:40Good luck to both of you.
08:41All right.
08:43Sometimes in boxing, the word tough is overused,
08:45but never was it more applicable than with the Pocket Rocket, Wayne McCullough.
08:50All he had to do was witness his last fight with hard-hitting Eric Morales.
08:55He may be too tough.
08:56He's given his share, but he's taken a lot of punishment as well.
09:00Brown, a slick boxer at his best, likes to set up his attack with a jab and outwork his opponent.
09:05He is not about power.
09:07Neither is McCullough, for that matter.
09:09He's more about accumulating punches, and he comes out fast.
09:13You know, he's talked about the fact, McCullough, that he was probably a little bit slower,
09:16but he can still throw upwards of 100, 120 punches a round.
09:19It's going to be a heck of a pace to keep.
09:21McCullough, aggressive, tenacious, just took one on the neck from Alvin Brown.
09:26Extremely aggressive is McCullough.
09:28Always on the attack, forever pressing forward, as you can see.
09:32Funny shots, hit shots.
09:33He loves to go toe-to-toe.
09:35Tremendous volume of punches.
09:37Well, he certainly come right out, and it looks like Brown is trying to sit on those punches just a
09:42little bit better.
09:43McCullough keeping the usual fast pace.
09:46Remember, his first time in the ring in just over two years.
09:51But he just looks to overwhelm opponents with activity, as you can see.
09:57Trained several years by the legendary Eddie Futch.
10:01His current trainer, Kenny Kroon, a disciple of Futch.
10:06But McCullough really works that body beautifully.
10:10Wears opponents down, and he also has an iron chin.
10:13He's not been down ever in 26 fights.
10:16He's a enough people, guys.
10:18McCullough's barely taking a step backward.
10:20He's really just coming forward, and he's converting back to his old style.
10:23It didn't take two or three rounds.
10:24It was immediate.
10:25McCullough said he's been training for this for two years.
10:28He's always superbly conditioned, tremendous energy.
10:37And we'll see if this thing goes deep, if the inactivity is a factor in McCullough.
10:43Well, he's truly, clearly trying to set the pace and work the body, slow down the legs of Brown,
10:48getting the job done better in the second portion of this round.
10:51McCullough feels he may be a bit slower after the last two years,
10:54but he feels he hits harder.
10:57Tyler thinks he hits harder, but he thinks he's a little smarter with where and how he's placed the shots.
11:01Like that right hand.
11:05And a wicked left hook to the head by McCullough.
11:08Brown trying to fight back with left hooks of his own,
11:12but not as effective as McCullough's.
11:15The pace is really getting to Brown, too.
11:17He can't keep up this rigorous pace.
11:20McCullough, with no let-up.
11:24Tremendous pressure.
11:32He will not let Brown take a breath.
11:35Bring it up. Bring clean.
11:39Heavy right hand there by Brown.
11:41Another right hand to the head by Brown.
11:43Brown's landing now with a left, too.
11:45Brown landed two beautiful right hands on the left hook,
11:47and McCullough barely flinched.
11:49A beautiful right hand to the body.
11:51Good recovery toward the end of the round by the unheralded Brown.
11:57But McCullough continues to back him up,
11:59but Brown with rights and lefts upstairs.
12:04Missed with that right hand, Brown.
12:10Let's go over to Jim Gray right now for more on the McCullough situation.
12:13Jim?
12:14All right, Steve.
12:15As you said, he hasn't fought in two years.
12:16He was not cleared in the United Kingdom to fight.
12:18Joining me is Dr. Margaret Goodman.
12:20She is the attending ringside physician
12:21among those who made the decision that it was okay for Wayne to fight.
12:25Why is it different here in Nevada,
12:26and why couldn't he get a license in the United Kingdom?
12:29I think that in the United Kingdom,
12:31they were concerned about how long the cyst had been there.
12:34There was no documentation when he presented there
12:36if it had been there for a long time or had just recently appeared.
12:39We had the benefit of seeing a scan on Wayne in 1995.
12:43It showed the same exact size of a small cyst.
12:46Wayne had had all those fights through the years with no change in its size.
12:49And we had the benefit of referring him to a host of experts at UCLA Medical Center,
12:53including Dr. Neal Martin.
12:54And don't they have the same fine doctors and institutes overseas?
12:57Yes, they do.
12:58And the benefits that they've had for all those years as well?
13:00Of course they do.
13:01But this is our opinion.
13:02We had to make our own opinion and decide whether or not we thought he was fit.
13:06The cyst was small enough.
13:07Was the decision that you made that it couldn't be an impediment
13:10or hurt him should he be hit?
13:12That's very true.
13:13If it had been a much larger cyst, perhaps five to ten times that size,
13:17it might have presented a problem.
13:18But being it was so very tiny, about a centimeter and a half,
13:21it is not dangerous.
13:23He's in no more danger than any other fighter that would step in the ring
13:26under these circumstances.
13:27Dr. Goodman, thank you for your time.
13:29Thank you very much.
13:30I'm glad you're here.
13:30Steve, back to you.
13:31All right, Jim, and thank you, Dr. Goodman.
13:34An extremely serious issue that has a difference of opinion,
13:37yet the Nevada Commission completely confident
13:40in their decision to let McCullough fight.
13:42McCullough looked this round.
13:43Beautiful right hands to the body and left hooks up top.
13:45Hurting Alvin Brown, I mean, he's bent him in half
13:49with one right hand to the body,
13:50and Brown is showing the wear and tear of this pace.
13:52You can tell by the fact that he holds on to McCullough more now.
13:56A big right hand by Brown, but it was not clean.
13:59It was partially blocked.
14:01There's another right hand, but again,
14:02it did have full impact on McCullough.
14:06McCullough again has never been down.
14:07He has a granite chin.
14:12Pushes Brown back with that right hand,
14:14and that right hand wasn't even that heavy.
14:16Listen to my command, Wayne.
14:21Brown trying to stay with McCullough,
14:23a fighter who hurts his opponents
14:24by an accumulation of punches,
14:26not the power of his punches.
14:29You can see that McCullough is just nonstop.
14:31If you hold one arm, he'll hit you with the other.
14:34He'll just hit whatever is open, wherever is available.
14:36And he's got the great experience
14:38over one-third of McCullough's fights
14:40against world champions.
14:42Morales, Hamed, Polo Perez, Zaragoza,
14:45Reidol, just to name a few.
14:46Oh, a big right hand to the head by McCullough.
14:49But Brown is game.
14:51And McCullough took some good punches in between.
14:53He got hit with a couple of good right hands on the left hook.
14:55Didn't even flick.
14:56Fired back.
14:57Brown showing the wear and tear of this pace.
14:59But also showing a terrific heart hanging in there.
15:07All right hand sends him to the canvas.
15:11Four, five, six, seven, eight.
15:17How do you feel?
15:19You ready to fight?
15:20Come on.
15:22Four.
15:23The right setting it up.
15:25The left hook putting him down.
15:29Another right hand that snoggers, Brown.
15:33Right now, attrition, the accumulation factor's huge.
15:37Down for the second time.
15:40No three knockdown rule.
15:41Four, five, six.
15:43Doesn't look like he's going to make it.
15:44Seven.
15:45He's not getting up, Steve.
15:47Nine.
15:48And Vic Draculic waves it off.
15:51A knockout for Wayne McCullough in his return.
15:57And he does it early.
15:59Round two.
16:07Wayne McCullough, who is not known for his big punch knockout power,
16:13knocks out Alvin Brown of the second round
16:17to go to 24-3 with 15 knockouts.
16:21Sure.
16:22But Alvin Brown hanging in there as much as he could.
16:25Gets a little peck on the cheek.
16:26Wayne.
16:27Some consolation from the winner, Wayne McCullough.
16:30Who's really one of the nicest people,
16:32most affable, engaging gentlemen in the sport.
16:39Here's a guy who was told that the next punch to the head could kill him.
16:43He didn't care if he lived.
16:44He lost the will to live,
16:45but even sought professional help.
16:47He was telling us in the meetings yesterday
16:49on the urging of his wife, Cheryl.
16:51And he said that he thought he was going to crack up at one point,
16:55but the professional help, the therapist helped turn him around,
16:58and he feels a lot better about things these days.
17:00And this won't hurt him as well,
17:02the confidence from this victory.
17:05But let's just hope that everything physically is all right with McCullough.
17:10Based on that performance,
17:11I'd say there's no indication that he has any problems.
17:14I'm talking about the problem with the cyst.
17:17Yeah.
17:19That nothing crops up later.
17:23But very encouraging words from Dr. Margaret Goodman,
17:26the ringside physician from the Nevada Commission,
17:28with regard to the condition of Wayne McCullough.
17:32McCullough actually, he told us that it was not in the brain of the cyst,
17:37but between the brain and the skull,
17:38that it was a water cyst,
17:39and if Jared would just dissolve.
17:41That's what he was told.
17:46He put Brown down twice in that second round.
17:51Constantly keeping the pressure on,
17:52he has Brown on the retreat.
17:54Coming in with a left hook,
17:55you see now Brown had his chin up,
17:56he got hurt,
17:57he was on his way down,
17:58and a right hand on top of the head
17:59just helps push him a little further south.
18:07Here's another look of that knockdown.
18:08Once again,
18:09McCullough keeping the pressure on.
18:11Brown looked at his head up in the air,
18:12gets hit with a clean left hook.
18:13You see the jaw snap,
18:14he's on his way to the ground,
18:16and that right hand, insignificant.
18:18Brown was all ready for all intents and purposes
18:21on the down,
18:22on the ground.
18:25And here's the final KO.
18:27Brown's trying to cover,
18:29just not get barraged.
18:30The left hook to the body's not real strong.
18:32The right hand lands on top of the head.
18:34That body shot,
18:34I believe,
18:35hurt a lot.
18:35That's what put him down.
18:37Left hook,
18:37kidneys.
18:38So Wayne McCullough,
18:40with a successful comeback,
18:42his first action since Halloween night,
18:4419-99.
18:46The former Bantaway champion,
18:48now campaigning at featherweight,
18:50making the transition.
18:55The relatively unknown Alvin Brown
18:57falls to 17-5.
19:00We'll take a last look at the knockout.
19:03Punches on the inside here,
19:04not real effective.
19:04That shot, glancing.
19:07There's a left hook underneath.
19:08He's been down once and he's hurt,
19:10but that left hook,
19:10look,
19:11you can see his knees buckle,
19:12his elbow come down.
19:13That took the wind in the sail,
19:14out of the sails,
19:15and that just made him quit.
19:16I think his spirit was taken
19:17with that body shot.
19:18He hung in there
19:19as long as he possibly could,
19:21but...
19:21By coincidence,
19:22his friend Mike McCallum
19:23told him to snatch the body
19:24from time to time.
19:25The old body snatcher,
19:26that's right.
19:27Well,
19:27the possibility now
19:28of McCullough going down
19:30to 122
19:31to fight WBC.
19:32Chap Willie Horan,
19:33he said,
19:34McCullough said he wants a rematch
19:35with Prince Nassim Hamed.
19:37He extended Hamed 12 rounds,
19:39although he lost a one-sided decision
19:41to the Prince,
19:42and his dream fight
19:43would be with Marco Antonio Guerrero.
19:46Let's get the official word
19:47from our ring announcer,
19:48Jimmy Lennon Jr.
19:53Ladies and gentlemen,
19:54we have the time
19:55of two minutes,
19:5643 seconds,
19:57and round number two,
19:59a referee in charge,
20:00Vic Draculich,
20:01reaches the count of ten.
20:03He is back,
20:04and winner by way of knockout,
20:06the pocket rocket,
20:08Wayne McCullough.
20:13So McCullough now 24-3,
20:1615 knockouts,
20:17a second round return knockout
20:20over relatively unknown
20:22Alvin Brown.
20:28So now McCullough can go back,
20:30shower, relax,
20:31and get ready for
20:32the big main event
20:33that the fans here
20:34came to see,
20:35Joel Casamayor
20:37versus Ocelino Freitas.
20:39Now that is to unify
20:40the WBA and WBO
20:44130-pound championships.
20:46Casamayor and Freitas
20:47are waiting in the wings.
20:52Standing by right now
20:54with Wayne McCullough,
20:55the pocket rocket,
20:56is our Jim Gray.
20:57Jim?
20:57All right, thank you, Steve.
20:58I guess, Wayne,
20:59it's been two years
21:00and three months.
21:01First of all,
21:01how do you feel?
21:02I feel great.
21:02First of all,
21:03I want to thank God
21:03for getting me through this fight.
21:04Nobody got hurt,
21:05but two years,
21:06three months out of the ring,
21:08but me and Kenny Krummer,
21:09my trainer,
21:09working hard.
21:10You know,
21:10it's good to be back.
21:11I haven't had a knockout
21:12in six years,
21:13and this guy was a real guy,
21:1417 and four,
21:16a durable kid,
21:16and he's only been stopped once.
21:18Now, Wayne,
21:18you were told
21:19that the next blow to your head
21:20without the headgear
21:22could lead to your demise,
21:24could lead to your death.
21:25When you took that first blow
21:26to your head
21:26in the first round,
21:27what went through your mind?
21:29Well, the British board
21:29told me one more blow to the head
21:30was going to kill me,
21:32and, you know,
21:32my career was over.
21:34You know,
21:34it was different
21:34with these small blows on,
21:36and actually,
21:37he hit me a good right hand,
21:38and I think it was
21:39at the beginning
21:39of the second round,
21:40a big loop and shot,
21:41and I was like,
21:42I don't want to hit
21:43any more of these shits,
21:44and I kept my hands up,
21:45but, you know,
21:46I didn't worry about
21:46the problem they told me about,
21:49and I just got on with my job.
21:50Kenny Krummer,
21:50my trainer,
21:51told me to take my time,
21:52use the jab,
21:53and work the body,
21:53and I just wanted
21:54to take my time.
21:55Before we look
21:56at the highlights of this,
21:57is there any concern
21:58in your mind
21:59that you feel okay now,
22:00but there could be
22:01some damage down the line
22:02by continuing to fight?
22:03No, because every doctor
22:05that ever looked at me
22:06has cleared me.
22:07I've had 14 of the top
22:08neurosurgeons around the world,
22:09and four of them
22:10is a British boxing board's own,
22:11but they won't give me
22:12a license over there.
22:13You know,
22:13I've went to UCLA
22:14to see the top doctors possible.
22:16I've went through
22:17every test possible,
22:18and one of the fighters
22:19who wants to go
22:20through every test,
22:21you know,
22:21to make sure I'm okay,
22:22I've got a lovely wife
22:23and a little daughter
22:24that I'm, you know,
22:25I'm more worried about them,
22:26so why would I fight
22:27if it was a risk?
22:28But it is important
22:29to you to fight back there,
22:29and if they won't give you
22:30a license,
22:30you're going to have
22:31to continue your career
22:32elsewhere, correct?
22:32Yeah, I can fight in Dublin
22:33because it's under
22:34the Irish boxing,
22:35but I can't fight in Belfast
22:36because it's under the British.
22:37And they're stopping me
22:38from fighting in Belfast.
22:40You know,
22:40I could drive 40 minutes
22:41from Belfast
22:41and fight on the border.
22:43Let's take a look
22:44at these shots
22:44that you gave to Alvin
22:47in the first knockdown here.
22:49You know,
22:49I was trying to take my time,
22:50use the jab,
22:51worked the left hook,
22:52and I was trying to get
22:53the right hand underneath
22:54to the body.
22:55It took,
22:56I was a good left too.
22:56It's one of the best
22:57of throwing along.
22:58Just grazed him right there,
22:58though.
22:59Yeah, just cut him
22:59on the point of the chin.
23:02And I knew
23:03he was going to get back up.
23:04And now this is the end
23:04of the fight right here,
23:05Wayne.
23:06I just wanted to jump
23:07straight on.
23:08In the past,
23:08I haven't been jumping
23:09on the guys,
23:09and I wanted to stay
23:10right on top of the guy.
23:12As soon as he moves,
23:12I wanted to be where he was
23:14and straight down.
23:15Were you rusty?
23:16I mean,
23:17did it feel like
23:18you were back on the bike
23:18or did you feel like,
23:19you know,
23:20I need training wheels?
23:21I've been in the gym
23:22for two years,
23:22and I let my sparring
23:23partners wear fight gloves
23:25and sparring
23:25for the first few weeks.
23:27And it felt,
23:28it was crazy,
23:29like a crazy Irishman.
23:30But I needed to do
23:31something like that
23:32to get sharp.
23:33And it definitely
23:34kept me sharp
23:34when I stepped
23:35into the real thing.
23:36And, you know,
23:36it's great to be back
23:37in front of my home.
23:38Vegas fans have been here
23:39for nine years
23:40in my last Vegas.
23:40You consider them
23:41your home fans now, huh?
23:41I want to thank Showtime
23:43for putting me on
23:43because no other
23:44television station
23:45would put me on
23:46because of my problem.
23:46And I want to thank Showtime.
23:48All right.
