00:00oh can you tell me oh my goodness what theo's appearance this is this is the most god bless you
00:06i mean this is the most dissected innocuous podcast appearance of all time well when was
00:12his last one exactly i mean i'm not arguing that it's notable because it was on no it was notable
00:18no no it was and it was notable because of yawn my my guess is that he was bored he
00:23is friends
00:24with carl ravage as jones and keith so expertly called it call her carl her daddy should be the
00:31name of the podcast blows up i mean i mean yeah exactly carl her daddy theo was on it he's
00:37friends
00:37with carl ravage he goes on i'm not denying that we don't see theo and that's why even when they
00:42announced he was going to be on we have to go listen to this but when you talk about the
00:47sound
00:47bite about him saying you know what the red socks are good at pitching and they're really good at
00:53fielding and we're not so good at hitting and we need a hitter okay yeah he spoke the truth i
01:00mean
01:01yeah but what it's not this is anybody it's like the sky is blue i mean we know that this
01:06is a fact
01:07okay well what about sam kennedy this morning with the greg hill show saying urgency earlier
01:12conversations than we've ever had new faces okay sooner than later that's the that's that is actually
01:18more notable than he says earlier than ever before although it's what dave dombrowski said
01:24you know a couple weeks ago although that doesn't mean anything until trades are made
01:30you know as well as i do ken when is the last notable may trade the red socks have made
01:35in season no outside the season in may well because crochet and i said the last notable
01:44may when was devers june june okay close in may come on nerd get it in may may i don't
01:52know what
01:52is it it was it was 23 years ago shane hill and brand for young young kim okay all right
01:58you're
01:58yelling at me well i i keep happening to say may like 50 000 you're like crochet what okay carl
02:05her
02:05daddy i don't know what are you so upset about just it's friday on memorial day weekend calm down i'm
02:09trying to amp up throw the cougar in the car let's go
02:19okay so it's nothing until they make a trade i get it i'm just i'm looking at a unique season
02:24by the way rich this is a kentel i i when he gets really flustered i get it i can't
02:30they have fired
02:30the manager he can't even look you in the eyes things are just looking the other way do you see
02:34this rob you you've really you've you've shamed him he's standing in the corner start with the
02:39image of you in pittsburgh without your shirt on or what was it with a socky you really can't look
02:44i don't even know where he's going i mean i just what are we talking i've never seen this before
02:50with you you didn't you wanted to do the cookie cutter theo epstein was on a podcast conversation
02:54i think people are interested in that i just want to i could be wrong what what is what is
02:58his job
02:58again like i don't even know how is her that's what he says on the podcast oh so maybe he's
03:03advising john henry and the rest of the front office maybe that's happening i advise you about a lot
03:08of stuff you don't listen to it you're not an advisor i mean it's he's an he said it on
03:14the
03:14podcast the great thing about being an advisor is that i can stay out of the media stuff because
03:20really all i'm doing is advising and who knows if they're going to take what i'm saying yeah i will
03:25say this about theo and i've said this before he is around i mean you go back to the trade
03:29deadline
03:30he's in the room for the trade deadline the winter meetings we would be walking in he would be
03:34walking out yeah so he is around it's not like he's just on some golf course like taking the calls
03:39like oh yeah i think that's a good idea or bad idea so yeah in that respect that's the best
03:44i
03:44can give you in terms of what he's doing so to your to your point you know talking about how
03:47nothing
03:47when's the last time something happened in may and i know the sooner rather than later thing was the
03:51one thing that kind of from that in this morning made me perk up a little bit do you think
03:56that there's
03:57a chance that they are going to do something before the trade deadline that they might possibly it
04:02sounds like they're at least discussing it should yeah but they also lean on that the cost is too
04:09much this is why trades aren't made yeah and and hey listen i mean the the san francisco giants needed
04:15the exact same thing the red sox need now you know what they did in june again what they do
04:19in june
04:20in june traded for raffi that's right so a team did it so you can't say that they didn't do
04:25it
04:25the problem is is that this day and age of of general managers in front offices including this one
04:31they'll say well the cost is too prohibitive prohibitive that's why you have instances like
04:36last trade deadline where they're like oh we need a guy who's going to pitch in the playoffs and you
04:40end up with dustin may yeah the only really the the best trade deadline acquisition in the last five
04:46years was kyle schwarber who had bad hamstrings couldn't play for a month yeah and was traded for
04:53a guy who is out of baseball now okay how about my two suggestions from today number one katel marty
04:58now that trevor story is under gone surgery meyer to short you go back and re-engage with the
05:04diamondbacks you know tory lovella well i know you have some intel there first of all could that
05:08happen uh probably not because the diamondbacks are still in it i mean they they are if they were
05:15they were in the american league they would be like five games up in the wild card i think they're
05:19three games back but they're two games over 500 they need pitching like would they yeah they always
05:23need pitching so that might move the needle yeah you also have to get katel marty to sign off on
05:27it
05:27because he has a no trade but it's hey listen there's no there's no bad ideas and you've got
05:32to ask around the problem is here's the biggest question i think that you should be asking is that
05:37with conley early and with peyton toley knowing what they are right now would you trade what you
05:42put in what them in one of these deals because you would probably have to but the problem is their
05:47perception is a whole lot different than it was four months ago now it's we know they're good
05:52major league pitchers we know that they're part of our future so do we want to deal them for a
05:57deal
05:57like that yeah i think you'd have to you'd pick one so and i would keep uh toley just because
06:03he's
06:03too good i want to drink with him yeah because there's a chance in this job that i might actually
06:07one time have a situation where we are drinking together right that's what i know and early is
06:12kind of boring i mean he's good i mean west point military guy yeah he's he won't drink with me
06:16no maybe you think you would i mean west point guys drink yeah they do they do yep well the
06:22other
06:22one is byron buxton who's here this weekend could you talk to byron and ask him if he's willing to
06:25move uh i will i right after this i'm gonna go over there but i don't think that's a terrible
06:31idea
06:31you should ask about him and but once again byron buxton is a guy who signed for a little bit
06:37and he's an iconic figure in minnesota there's a reason why he said i'm staying in minnesota forever
06:43until he didn't um yeah so i i think that what you don't want to end up with is pull
06:48side danny
06:49jansen as the answer oh right yeah i mean you you want to have a i said this before that
06:55you have
06:56you have that story that came out i think it was yesterday about shohei itani shohei itani
07:00a couple years ago was going to be a free agent tampa bay rays almost had a deal for shohei
07:06itani
07:06at the trade deadline so the tampa bay rays would have had shohei itani for two months knowing
07:11they weren't going to sign him so the reason i bring that up is because that shows it a sense
07:16of urgency that's what we're talking about the tampa bay rays are willing to do that then the
07:21boston red sox for a guy like jordan alvarez or someone should be willing to do what the tampa bay
07:27rays were a couple years ago so what did you think about john henry's comments that he made
07:31about uh i used to think that i would win a championship it was a joke it was a joke
07:35yeah what what did you
07:36what did you make of that where he basically said that you know i guess i was wrong i think
07:40he's
07:41i think he a lot of things stings him right now and i don't know like i heard jones and
07:46keith talk
07:46about this and i don't know if decisions are tangibly made because of chance or whatever
07:53but he hears this yeah i mean he hears stuff on our station he hears like all over this was
07:59this there
08:00was a reason why going back in the day he drove over to where he used to work right i
08:05mean there was
08:06a reason for that and because like he wanted to answer that he and the the bizarre thing is he
08:12has
08:12the opportunity to answer it if he just answers it yeah exactly but but when you're talking about
08:18that i think it's like everything the truth lies somewhere in the middle he thought probably thought
08:23it was a joke but he has to also understand how that's going to play in boston of course of
08:26course
08:26and my whole thing was that you know if if he if if what he is saying is that his
08:31impression was
08:31if you win one championship you can rest on your laurels after that well he is obviously mistaken
08:35because in the city of boston we just want you to show that you are caring enough listen put together
08:41a good team anyone should know this it's him he fired a gm seven months after the guy won a
08:47world
08:47series so you think dave dombrowski when he's on the duck boats thought he was going to be fired
08:51seven months later no this is how it works but that was kind of the beginning of the end though
08:55wasn't it on that whole philosophy that he used to have that once that one world series he's
08:59had a bunch of philosophy yeah this one hasn't been good no but you go back to i pulled up
09:05the
09:05back to his soybean days listen soybean there is not it's not a linear thing soybeans put that on
09:11the t-shirts um but you you go back to their they've been chasing their tail a lot of things
09:16and trying
09:16to get trends and and and john henry has made billions of dollars off trends so i understand why
09:23but you go back to there's a quote when they hired dombrowski john henry said we've been too
09:29reliant on analytics think about that let that soak in john henry saying we're we've been too
09:34reliant on analytics they hired dombrowski he does exactly what he's needed to do and then oh by the
09:41way i think tampa but they they have a much more interesting model we're going to hire the guy from
09:46tampa right now they're driving at every step the organization you know talk about analytics but that's
09:50the thing is that when you talk about breslow breslow versus cora right for john henry as much as he
09:57liked alex cora don't you think his his soybean i don't know don't you think his business mind i was
10:03gonna say put soy uh soybean mine but that would be unfair um his business mind leans more to the
10:09way that craig breslow does it than an alex cora does it definitely sure i think yeah yeah on the
10:15nerd spectrum and by the way this was weird because because i remember we were talking about this and
10:19speaking of like the way people do things somebody who right now i can't figure out and we talked about
10:25this last week i believe and none of us really know what the status is with jason veritech because
10:31like what we saw last week was an interesting shot by katherine veritech when responding to somebody
10:37who said like please come back and she put they have the quote smartest man in baseball running the
10:43show they'll be okay without jason that's what they wanted it's what's best for the team and of course
10:48a gleeful emoji for irony um what is going on with veritech and the red socks right now oh first
10:57of
10:57all whoever i don't know what the over under on katherine veritech tweeting something like that
11:02out but it was i think i think it hit the over because i think we were all expecting that
11:06yeah but
11:07it's you know i think with veritech it had gotten to the point where i don't think they were valuing
11:14him certainly as much as a lot some people on that coaching staff thought that they should value him
11:20uh certainly as much as i think that he thought they should value him um he you go back to
11:25the
11:26contract negotiations i mean he came on the radio like when's the last time he did that
11:30to i don't want to say the airing of the grievances but it was clearly and ken you correct me
11:35if i'm
11:35wrong yeah i felt that that was more a leverage thing than ever seemed like it i mean yeah he
11:39was
11:39looking at whether i don't know what he's looking for more money or more like duties or what but it
11:43wasn't just hey jason veritech you're awesome you're going to be a manager let us give you the
11:48contract there was no semblance of that and i don't think there was any semblance of it going all the
11:53way till he was let go and and the reason why they don't fire him along with everybody because they
11:59know how it would look if they fired jason veritech exactly that's my whole thing was that they tried to
12:05like they wanted to save face by keeping him around and maybe even potentially move him to manager
12:11one day but they were but veritech was like f you guys go f yourself reassign him he's hosting a
12:16podcast now twice a month well by the way isn't everybody yeah um but yeah the but did anyone expect
12:24him to say oh yeah yeah let me be reassigned to catching coordinator in greenville right it's like
12:30no he was going to get in front of the plane give the thumbs down then go to greece yeah
12:33like every
12:34like that was the play that was the game and then he was going to go to the bc game
12:37and talk to the
12:38georgia tech guys and live his best life so you don't think he was ever manager material no they
12:42never thought he no no not here i mean i don't know i don't know if he's manager material elsewhere
12:47but he wasn't gonna be the heir apparent here see i thought that that was the case with no i
12:51thought
12:52he was going to be
12:52he was going to be
