On Thursday's edition of Felger and Mazz, the guys reacted to the Red Sox sweeping the Baltimore Orioles. The guys then made the point that the Red Sox should regret not making any moves at the trade deadline.
Transcript
00:00You should second-guess this team for not investing more
00:02because they are legit.
00:04And I hate to kind of do the I told you so.
00:05This is really what I want to say.
00:07It's like, I've been saying this this year,
00:09I said it previous years too.
00:11If you're in it, you're in it.
00:13You should always be investing
00:14if you're a big market team like the Red Sox.
00:16And there was nothing precluding this Red Sox team,
00:20especially from catching lightning in a bottle
00:23and getting hot and going on a run and becoming a factor.
00:25You should have been able to allow for that possibility
00:28even when they were losing all these one-run games
00:31or they were below the line, below the playoff line, below 500.
00:37It's just the nature of Major League Baseball nowadays
00:40is you get hot in the second half, you make the tournament,
00:43and then you have every chance to make the World Series
00:46as anybody else.
00:47It's sort of the way it works.
00:48Take your chances.
00:49And why couldn't that have been you?
00:51You had enough here that you could do
00:53what some of these teams had done in the past,
00:55whether it was the Diamondbacks or the Braves or the Phillies
00:58or these teams that just get into the playoffs
00:59and the next thing you know, they're in the World Series.
01:01It happens routinely in baseball.
01:03Arizona's a good comp.
01:04What happened with Arizona a couple of years ago?
01:06I'm sorry.
01:07I know I beat it to death,
01:08but this ties in with my thing with the Patriots.
01:10Oh, they suck.
01:11They're not going to go anywhere.
01:11You actually don't know that.
01:14And just giving up on seasons
01:16because you don't think they're going to be good
01:18is freaking stupid.
01:19And I hate it.
01:22I hate it when teams do it.
01:23Unless it's so obvious that you're the worst of the worst
01:28and Connor McDavid is in the lottery,
01:31then fine, you can go ahead and do it.
01:33But short of that, you're not going to suck-suck with Drake May.
01:38Win all the games you can
01:39and believe you have a chance because you do.
01:44And if you're the Red Sox
01:46and you're hovering around 500,
01:49but you've got some young players coming up
01:50and you're sort of in the mix,
01:52nothing precludes you from getting hot in the second half
01:56and going on a run.
01:57And the next thing you know, you're on a deep run.
01:59And so you should invest in that team.
02:01And I just feel justified in feeling that way.
02:04I felt this way about this Red Sox team,
02:06and I'm right.
02:06And I feel this way about the Patriots.
02:08I'm going to be right about that too.
02:10Just the give-up factor to me is just to know,
02:12why do you all watch sports?
02:13Oh, they suck, they're not going to do anything.
02:16It's like, well, why do you bother?
02:17Do you like watching the games or not?
02:20Maybe you don't.
02:21But it's like, God.
02:23I think it's also a spoil factor.
02:25There were so many championships won
02:28that all of a sudden it became all or nothing.
02:30And so I think people completely lost sight
02:33of what it takes to get there
02:36and what it's typically like to win.
02:39And that means you've got to build toward it.
02:40It doesn't just happen at the snap of a finger.
02:42And what's even worse,
02:44the Red Sox felt that way.
02:46What was the reporting?
02:47What cut did we have?
02:48Or we read it where they said,
02:50internally, John Henry looks at the World Series odds.
02:53Oh, yeah.
02:53Catillo, I think.
02:54Yeah, it was from Chris Catillo on his podcast.
02:56Yeah, it was that Fenway Rundown podcast.
02:58It's not the fan graphs' playoff odds,
03:01which have never been that bad.
03:04You know, it's, no, no.
03:05What are the World Series odds?
03:08And if the World Series odds or projection isn't high,
03:13then we're not going to invest,
03:14which I can't tell you how much I hate.
03:17So making the World Series,
03:19making an LCS is not worth it?
03:22Oh, shame on you.
03:23Like, if you really feel that way,
03:25then why are we watching this?
03:28Like, why would you ask your fans to invest?
03:29Like, going to the League Championship Series is cool.
03:33It's fun.
03:34It makes everything worth it.
03:36And it's why you play the games and we watch,
03:40is to have a chance to go to the World Series
03:42or a chance to play for a championship.
03:43And you've come up just short at that level.
03:45You're going to sit there and say,
03:46well, that's our ceiling,
03:48so we're not going to invest in the team.
03:50God, I hate that.
03:51You should hate it.
03:52Again, and I would say it's even worse
03:54when you have a team that has young guys
03:56that you've been planning around
03:58and building with
04:00and you think they have the chance
04:01to be something good.
04:02So then they get here and what?
04:04You don't want to get them to the playoffs?
04:05You don't want to do that?
04:06God.
04:07So there's two things.
04:08One, they benefit from the experience in those games.
04:11Secondly, they get better as they go.
04:14There is no way to know
04:16how young guys are going to react
04:18when you bring them to the big leagues
04:20or any league.
04:21The point being is Roman Anthony
04:23is a great example, okay?
04:25Because Sedan Raphael
04:27has taken two or three years
04:28to get to where he is now.
04:31Roman Anthony was good when he got here.
04:34So there's no way for you to know that.
04:36Bring them up and see what happens.
04:38So they could have played
04:38the beginning of the year differently
04:40with Roman Anthony here
04:41and Christian Campbell in the minors,
04:44which is where it should have started.
04:45Maybe you get off to a different start.
04:47Maybe the division looks differently
04:48if you started with Anthony on the team.
04:50Sure.
04:51Maybe the division looks differently
04:53if you did more at the deadline.
04:54Although, again, everything you didn't do
04:55is still turning out well for you.
04:57If you're winning games
04:58with Jordan Hicks and Steven Matz,
05:01then for Pete's sake,
05:02all I'm saying is
05:03just that defeatist attitude
05:05is like, why do you bother?
05:08They don't even want to play it out.
05:10God!
05:11And I'm talking about fans.
05:12They don't even want to play it out.
05:13And what's even more bothersome
05:15is I just feel the Red Sox
05:16got sucked into that too.
05:18Because let me tell you,
05:18right now the Red Sox,
05:20the spine of that team
05:22has become the 1-2-3 in the rotation
05:26and the 8th and 9th inning.
05:27It's the spine of the team.
05:30Your top three starters
05:30have been as good as anyone in baseball.
05:33And your back two in the bullpen
05:34have been better than anyone in baseball.
05:36I can't imagine
05:36anyone has a current track record
05:39like Chapman.
05:4041 straight batters
05:42without allowing a hit.
05:43Correct.
05:43So that's a perfect game and a half?
05:47That's like a no-hitter and a half.
05:48Yeah, basically that's right.
05:49You know what I mean?
05:50Yeah.
05:5041 straight without allowing a hit.
05:54When Whitlock and Chapman
05:56pitch in the same game,
05:57their last 25 appearances
05:59spanning over three months,
06:00they've allowed a grand total
06:01of one earned run.
06:02One.
06:03In those games.
06:05You've won all of them
06:06except those that went to extras
06:07and then you lost in extras
06:08after they were done.
06:09But you never lost it
06:11in their innings.
06:11And like that plays
06:15in the postseason.
06:17You have a chance
06:18to go to the World Series.
06:19Chapman's ERA
06:20in his last 34 games
06:22is 0.29.
06:23You have a chance
06:24to go to the World Series
06:24and you always did.
06:26That's what bothers me
06:27is that in June,
06:29you did.
06:30You had a chance.
06:30I told you you did.
06:32And it's like,
06:33I can't go anywhere anyway.
06:34You think they're going
06:34to do anything?
06:36Well, they were looking
06:37like trash for a while.
06:38So?
06:39Sorry, Murray.
06:40I don't mean to yell at you.
06:40I'm yelling at everybody.
06:42You do because I'm
06:42one of these people
06:43because if you look like trash
06:43like they did
06:44for a good chunk
06:45of the season,
06:45like what the hell?
06:46I'm supposed to believe?
06:47Things turn.
06:49If you have talent,
06:50it turns.
06:51The Washington Nationals,
06:52the year they won it,
06:54were under 500 in June
06:55or something.
06:56What was this?
06:57They were,
06:58no,
06:59they were under 500
07:00in like,
07:00yeah,
07:00in June,
07:01like middle of June.
07:02Yep,
07:02that's right.
07:03You got it right.
07:04Utter trash.
07:05And I think it was
07:05the year after they traded
07:07or got rid of Harper.
07:08Mike Harris.
07:09They let their best player go.
07:11They're under 500
07:12three months into the next year
07:13and the next thing you know,
07:15here they are
07:16and it's like,
07:17it happens.
07:19Yeah,
07:19particularly if your talent
07:21is underperforming,
07:22which is what was going on
07:23with the Red Sox
07:23for part of the time.
07:24They had their heads
07:25up their ass.
07:27But the Arizona thing
07:28you mentioned
07:28is a good one
07:29because that team
07:30had young talent.
07:31And they were under 500
07:33with a month and a half
07:34to go.
07:34I said Washington,
07:36but Arizona applies.
07:36No,
07:37I mentioned Arizona before
07:38when they went to the World Series.
07:39You did.
07:39Arizona,
07:39and it's final 46 games
07:41that year.
07:41Arizona went 27 and 19.
07:44Okay,
07:44they finished 84 and 78.
07:47So they had a losing record
07:48in the middle of August,
07:49but it was a bad league
07:51and they had young players
07:53and all of a sudden
07:53they played well
07:54in the final six weeks.
07:55They got in
07:56and they went to the World Series.
07:58Now,
07:58they didn't win it,
07:59but that doesn't mean
08:01you shouldn't go for it.
08:03Like the idea
08:04that you just give up
08:05because of what?
08:06Because you have to put
08:06in the effort
08:07or you got to try?
08:09Like,
08:09I don't get that.
08:11The whole point
08:12is play it out.
08:14Would you give up
08:14a baseball game
08:15after the fourth inning
08:16if you're down four runs?
08:18Then they're going to win.
08:20Just play it out.
08:22Good God.
08:23You know,
08:24they deserve all the criticism
08:25you've given them.
08:26And so I'm as frustrated
08:29with them
08:29as I would be the fan base
08:30because I think
08:31they had roughly
08:31the same mentality,
08:33which is
08:33this is before we thought
08:35we were going to be ready.
08:36This is before
08:37our real maturation date.
08:40We felt this was
08:41a contending,
08:42you know,
08:43team and organization,
08:44these young players coming.
08:46This is not our time.
08:47So we're going to hold back.
08:49Do us just say shame on you.
08:50Sometimes you win
08:50before your time.
08:51Sometimes you win
08:52because it just happens.
08:54And so you should be supporting
08:57and get behind it
08:57and pushing your team
08:58to do everything they can
08:59to win.
09:00Even if,
09:00even if you think like,
09:02I always felt the Red Sox
09:04were capable of this
09:05and going on this kind of run
09:06and becoming a factor.
09:07I've felt this for the last
09:08three years.
09:09In fact,
09:10I felt that this year
09:11as strongly as any of them,
09:12but I didn't like,
09:14did I think,
09:14I think Lucas Giolito
09:15is a,
09:17just a guy.
09:18I think he's a jag.
09:19I never thought
09:20he would look like this.
09:21Me neither.
09:22Ever.
09:23And so like,
09:24you think,
09:25just because you
09:26don't think they can do anything,
09:28they shouldn't do anything?
09:30Like,
09:30what if you're wrong?
09:31As you often are.
09:33Nobody ever thinks of it that way.
09:34As I often are.
09:35As you often,
09:36as just the way it goes,
09:37you're just wrong.
09:38It just,
09:38you think a guy sucks
09:39or they're never going to do anything
09:40and the next thing you know,
09:41they do it just because you think
09:43they're not going to do anything.
09:46Meaning winning at the end of the year
09:47is no excuse.
09:48Like you should hope that you're wrong.
09:51And on Giolito,
09:52we've all been wrong.
09:53Bale.
09:54I always held out.
09:55Bale is different.
09:55Bale.
09:56I've always said he has ceiling.
09:57Yeah.
09:57Mike,
09:58a lot of that comes back to the talent.
10:01So at least for me.
10:02Okay.
10:02So you look at it and say,
10:03Bale's got the ability
10:04to be better than he is.
10:05Like sooner or later,
10:06that should turn.
10:07So he's an easy guy to believe in.
10:09And you can even say that about Anthony
10:12and certainly about Crochet.
10:14Like even Chapman.
10:16Now Chapman's 37.
10:17So I didn't think it was going to happen.
10:18But nobody ever said he couldn't throw anymore.
10:20We just said he can't throw strikes.
10:23Well,
10:23now all of a sudden he's throwing freaking,
10:25he's going 12 pitches with a guy
10:27and striking him out to end the game.
10:28So like they've got guys with ability,
10:31but I will admit like,
10:34and I didn't say to pack it in,
10:35but with the way they were striking out
10:37and the stupid mistakes they were making,
10:40I did not expect them to turn it around
10:42as dramatically as they have.
10:44It's different than just,
10:45I never ruled them out.
10:48I always thought it was possible.
10:49I've been feeling it was possible for years
10:50because it's just,
10:51it just happens that way,
10:52especially in baseball has become one of those sports.
10:54And I just,
10:57it boggles me the fans that fall into it.
10:59And I think that the fact that the team
11:01approach it that way too,
11:02is frankly shameful.
11:04And if they invested more in this team
11:07or managed it differently to begin the year,
11:08like this was a contending year,
11:10they might be in a different spot right now.
11:11Maybe even better spot,
11:12but they're in a good spot as it is.
11:14They're good enough to win the league.
11:16Don't question they are.
