00:03all right welcome back to newswire here on sports grid brady cannon is with us i want to get to
00:07the
00:07byron nelson because this is the shortest odds i think in the history of golf to win a tournament
00:11i think this is it but before we get there uh brady i'm sure you were watching the pga championship
00:16which i know you love so much but it was no fun for any better when you knew that basically
00:22nobody
00:22had a shot here i mean out of nowhere aaron rye wins the championship and i mean i suppose you
00:28could pick a top 100 or a top 20 or a top maybe even a top 10 uh but i
00:33i know smallie was it was a
00:35name that we had talked about a little bit but never aaron rye so what did you make of this
00:40is this
00:41like an all-time upset 290 to 1 i don't know anybody in the golf handicapping space that did well
00:49with
00:50the pga championship craig it was it was so no nobody had aaron rye uh i i actually knew a
00:58guy
00:58that had alex smalley and that didn't come to fruition i mean maddie schmidt out of nowhere
01:03and you i thought the first three days were really good and we go into sunday and we have this
01:09incredible leaderboard with scheffler and patrick reed and john rom and all these names just getting
01:16ready to pounce and then all of a sudden aaron rye emerges and you know hey good for him and
01:23uh you
01:24know there couldn't have been enough nice things said about aaron rye and his work ethic by a lot of
01:29his um colleagues there on tour and and you know the guy is one heck of a player there's no
01:35doubt
01:35about it and and he went and grabbed the thing by the horns you know the last 10 9 10
01:40holes he went
01:42out and got it and so credit to him but yeah i i was really expecting this fantastic drama on
01:49sunday
01:50and we it was a little bit anticlimactic but hey onto the nelson and congratulations to aaron rye
01:56yeah and and listen there's still a couple of majors left we got the u.s open the british too
02:01and so could make up some ground there maybe even this week but this is it so scotty scheffler had
02:07a
02:07really good i think first day at the pga championship maybe second if i'm not mistaken and then he ended
02:12up finishing 14th but brady as long as i've been following this this is it i've never seen this short
02:18odds to win any event on the pga tour the byron nelson this week has scotty scheffler listed at
02:23plus 155 and i and i think if i'm not mistaken from looking at the field that's more of the
02:31reason why
02:32now let's also note that scheffler missed a couple earlier in the year and so maybe that's why he's
02:39playing in this one but when i see siwoo kim and jordan spieth as the next closest odds it tells
02:45me
02:45a lot of guys taking the week off after the pga yeah it's definitely a light field and scotty's here
02:52for a couple of reasons he's the defending champion he absolutely torched this golf course last year
02:58to the tune of 31 under par and beat eric van royen by eight shots and you know it was
03:06so
03:07off the charts that they brought in lanny watkins and said all right we got to redo this golf course
03:12and
03:12so we do have a little bit of a new product this year i think the formula is the same
03:17it's it's a
03:18pretty straightforward you know hit the ball a long ways hit greens and regulation and it becomes a
03:23putting contest it'll be a birdie fest the the winning score proposition bet at the westgate super
03:29book here in las vegas this year is under or over 23 and a half under par and the average
03:35winning
03:36score for the last five years here at tpc craig ranch has been a little better than 25 under par
03:42so
03:42they're adjusting by a couple of strokes for the redesign but scotty also being you know a resident
03:48of the texas area and having grown up in that area jordan speed the same thing a lot of the
03:53local texas
03:54guys will will show up and and honor these events uh but yeah it's a watered down field and and
04:01i went
04:01with nothing but long shots craig and it's all basically predicated on scotty's odds as you point out
04:07being so low and then you've got spieth and kim at like 15 and kepka at 25 everybody after that's
04:15like 50 to 1 or higher and that's where i really started yeah and you like i this is usually
04:21when
04:22you hit your big one here brady when the field is like this here so maddie schmidt is the one
04:26name
04:27that i'm circling here because he played so well this past week i mean the odds just seem off here
04:31how is he 80 to 1 feels like he should be a 40 or a 50 well you know if
04:36he didn't do what he did last
04:38week then maybe maddie schmidt is typically 80 to 1 or so but i i thought that was tremendous and
04:44i
04:44mentioned that i believe this is going to be a putting contest maddie schmidt is a really good
04:49putter and oh by the way those were bent grass greens last week at a ron of mink just like
04:54we have
04:55here at tpc craig ranch and who was number one in that field for strokes game putting last week
05:01maddie schmidt so i went with a lot of putters at long odds this week craig we'll see if we
05:05can get
05:06one all right brady have a great rest of your week thanks again for coming on the show
05:10you bet good to be with you as always
