00:00When I tell you hour number two is in full effect, it is in full effect.
00:04It's Donnie Wrightside.
00:05It's Joe Ranieri.
00:05Now we welcome in the energy man himself.
00:08It's Cam Stewart because we need help with the Ryder Cup, with the CFL,
00:13maybe the WNBA, Major League Baseball, pro football.
00:16This is your guy, Cam.
00:18Welcome into the show.
00:19Thank you for joining us this morning.
00:21Oh, thank you very much, Donnie.
00:22Like, what an intro.
00:24And I'll tell you something about this Ryder Cup.
00:25There's one thing, though.
00:27Hey, hey, turkeys.
00:28What day is it today?
00:29It's Thursday morning.
00:31Joe, I'm watching Golf Channel right now.
00:33It's pissing rain.
00:34Like, what are these guys?
00:35Like, say there's any type of crazy rain delay.
00:38You know how many matches these guys have to put in?
00:40Like, I don't understand why you can't go Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.
00:45And then you have college football on Saturday and NFL on Sunday.
00:48Because I'll tell you one thing.
00:49I know you, Donnie.
00:50And I know Joe.
00:51And people who bet golf, we also bet football.
00:55So I just don't.
00:55And these guys in the Ryder Cup haven't been playing since Scheffler won a few weeks ago.
01:00So there's no, like, you could start this thing any other time.
01:03I'm just like, you've got to squeeze this in Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and compete
01:07against the National Football League in college.
01:09Anyway, I'm not the commissioner of the PGA Tour.
01:12I will tell you this.
01:13Yeah, Donnie, you're right.
01:14They changed a little bit of rules in the CFL, but they didn't go to four-down football.
01:19Because I know a lot of people would have said, and cut, Mike.
01:22We're done.
01:22But you know what it is?
01:23Hey, the field is now 100.
01:25They have to do these things, too.
01:27Because remember, guys, you guys know, like, small schools in the MAC and stuff where they
01:30have that track.
01:31Like, some of them aren't even 20 yards or whatever.
01:33So the CFL rules are fine.
01:35But Gabe came up with some great ideas yesterday.
01:37We'll talk about it.
01:38But here's the deal with the Ryder Cup.
01:40If I'm Team USA, if I'm Team USA, this is not the track that I want.
01:46I don't know how you feel about it, Joe.
01:47But I'm going to tell you something.
01:48Like, I'm looking at Team Europe and go, OK.
01:51Rory McIlroy bombs the ball.
01:53John Rahm bombs the ball.
01:54You got Bryson DeChambeau.
01:56But you get to choose the course.
01:59And I'm going to tell you something about Bethpage Black.
02:01It's one of the top 10 courses of difficulty in the world, not just the United States.
02:06So I'm looking at Team USA going, OK.
02:08I know there's some good players there.
02:10But, guys, I get Europe at plus 180.
02:13And I'm looking at this stuff going, I don't know how you feel, Joe.
02:16I don't know how you feel, Donnie.
02:17But I'm looking at Europe for value and saying they have a great chance to win.
02:21Like, they have a lot of guys right now that are very, very good.
02:25And I'll tell you, Joe, you know what?
02:26Rory bombs it.
02:28You can put him with Fleetwood, who one year was perfect with Molinari.
02:31I'm just saying, I look at the value of Europe, Joe, and go, you know what?
02:35You want to give me Europe at almost two to one?
02:37Sign me up.
02:38And I hope you guys don't cut my mic as a Canadian.
02:40I love Joe Ranieri, the mayor of Miami.
02:43Donnie Wright's side.
02:44The pride of, you know, Philadelphia Eagle fan.
02:46Tommy, he's a Rochester American.
02:48I love all my friends at SportsGrid.
02:50But this is about paying bills.
02:52And I'm looking at the European team going, I can't believe the price we're getting, Joe.
02:55It's very, like, I would have made America maybe, what do you think, Joe?
02:59Maybe $1.30?
03:01Like, not like $2.
03:03That's my opinion.
03:04I think Europe can win this thing.
03:05And I think the value's there.
03:07Yeah, I think, well, yeah, obviously, the big names, having the world's number one
03:11in Scotty Scheffler, is going to have a lot of people running to the window to back Team
03:15USA.
03:16But give me the keys.
03:17You know, I asked Keith Stewart yesterday, give me a name here of a guy that is going
03:22to be key.
03:23If the U.S. wins, this is a guy that's got to show up and show out.
03:27And he said, obviously, behind Scotty, it was Bryson that needs to elevate that crowd.
03:33He's got to show up for Team USA.
03:36Who's the guy for the Europeans that's got to show up and show out here, Cam?
03:40Great call, Joe.
03:41And Bryson DeChambeau, the problem is, he might hit it a mile, but he also sprays it.
03:46For Europe, I think there's a lot of guys.
03:48But I'm going to say Ty Hatton.
03:50You look at Rory McIlroy, Ty Hatton is the Bryson DeChambeau of Europe.
03:55He's an animal.
03:56He can smash clubs.
03:58And he has a personality.
03:59And the one thing about him is, he's going to have these guys going nuts.
04:02And the key to Europe, I think, early.
04:05You've got to get these guys early.
04:07And that's what I love, Joe.
04:08The first day, betting, plus 140.
04:10And what do the Europeans do well?
04:12We've known this for years.
04:13Joe, you're a golf guy like me.
04:15Foursomes, alternate shot.
04:16What do the Americans do well?
04:18Singles.
04:19That's what they always come back on Sunday with singles.
04:21But I'm looking at these guys going, even with the singles, the depth of the European team is very, very strong.
04:28Ty Hatton's an animal.
04:29That's what I'm thinking.
04:30He's one of those guys.
04:31And I'll tell you, Joe, for Scheffler, his points, two and a half.
04:37I go, that's a great bet for Team USA.
04:39You know what he is?
04:39He's plus 280 to be top American point getter, too.
04:42And I'm looking at this.
04:44Didn't we bet him at plus 280 with 162 guys in a field?
04:48So if I lose this bet, I don't even care.
04:51I'm getting Scotty Scheffler at the same price in a tournament with, like, nobody.
04:57At the same price he has for a full-field tournament, he will do well.
05:01I know people are like, oh, is he long enough?
05:03Yeah, no.
05:04Yeah.
05:04Is he straight enough?
05:05Yeah.
05:06Can he putt?
05:06For sure.
05:07He checks all the boxes.
05:09But then I'm looking at Europe going, oh, my God.
05:12Like, look at this team.
05:12Hatton, Rom, Hovland, Aubert.
05:16McIntyre's an animal.
05:17He almost won the U.S. Open.
05:18Rose, a veteran.
05:19Fleetwood never loses in these things.
05:21So I'm just absolutely shocked, guys, at the price for Europe.
05:25And for a great question, though, Joe, I think Hatton's one of those key guys.
05:29I also bet him over one and a half points.
05:32Like, he's one of those guys.
05:33And, guys, when you're betting this stuff, think about Scheffler.
05:36He will be in every single American team that he can.
05:40Like, there's no bench for him.
05:41That's the thing.
05:42Like, Colin Murakawa, take a seat.
05:44If he loses his first match, you might not see him until singles.
05:46That's the whole key to this thing.
05:48You have to have guys that are going to play a lot.
05:50And I'll tell you, Scotty Scheffler, don't you agree, Joe, at two and a half points?
05:54That's pretty good.
05:55If he doesn't get it, I don't care.
05:57I think the number's great.
05:58Plus 280, top American player.
06:00And I'll tell you one other American that I love, Cameron Young.
06:03I know Carver's with the kids.
06:04I was going to do a show with him.
06:06He's at Disney World.
06:07And we texted, here's the deal.
06:09Cameron Young, New York guy from the area.
06:12What does he do well?
06:13Bomb it.
06:13At Betpage Black, you got to murder the ball.
06:16Like, you got to be there.
06:17And I think he's one rookie that is sneaky.
06:19And he finally got his win.
06:20He almost won the Canadian Open five tournaments.
06:23Joe, he's just top 10 machine.
06:24I think he's a guy that's very, very dangerous.
06:26So that's a guy, top rookie.
06:28I'd look at Cameron Young.
06:31You think it's, Cam, quick out the door.
06:34You think this is decided in the singles matches?
06:37Or are they going to be so far behind again, Team USA?
06:40It's not going to matter what happens on Sunday.
06:42I think it goes to singles.
06:43I think it's close.
06:44And remember, guys, if it's a tie, be careful when you're betting.
06:4714-14, it's 28 points.
06:49Europe will retain the trophy.
06:50The team that won last time gets it.
06:52So that's the whole thing.
06:53If you want to bet it that way, it's plus 130.
06:56Without the tie, it's plus 180.
06:57Oh, we're a day away.
06:59Hours away, it feels like.
07:00We wait every few years for the Ryder Cup.
07:02And we love the Ryder Cup when it's on the U.S. mainland,
07:05particularly just outside of New York City.
07:08I'm Donnie Wrightside.
07:09He's Joe Waniere.
07:09And Keith Stewart joins us today.
07:11Boots on the ground at Bethpage Black.
07:14He's our go-to guy.
07:15He's our PGA guy.
07:16Right here on the Sports Grid Network.
07:17Keith, how are we feeling a day away?
07:20Hey, Donnie, when you say boots on the ground, it's rain boots on the ground.
07:24It's pouring out here today.
07:25They moved the opening ceremonies to yesterday, which was great,
07:29because I don't need all that pomp and circumstance.
07:31I just need the captains at 4 p.m.
07:33to tell me who's playing in the first session tomorrow morning.
07:36Because you know what?
07:37We've waited long enough.
07:38They announced this thing 4,392 days ago when Governor Cuomo and the PGA of America
07:45came here and said, we're coming to Bethpage for the Ryder Cup.
07:47Well, it's finally time.
07:50I absolutely love this, too.
07:51And it's nice talking to Keith multiple times this week to sort of get the layout.
07:54But what Keith just alluded to here, you know, normal, nice conditions,
07:58the golf course plays one way.
07:59Bethpage Black is already an absolute bear.
08:02With rainy conditions, maybe can't hit the golf ball further.
08:05But who gives the advantages here?
08:07Is it Team USA or is it the Europeans that would get this benefit
08:11from maybe a soggier golf course?
08:12Well, the weather's going to be perfect during the event.
08:16So maybe if it was going to be bad weather while they play,
08:19you might say Team Europe.
08:20But the fact that we're just going to soften the surfaces
08:22and create more scoring chances, it undoubtedly favors the USA side.
08:27We are much better at scoring.
08:29It's proven.
08:29I mean, we play over here on the TPC PGA Tour where, you know,
08:3330 underwins tournaments.
08:34Our guys are conditioned to go low.
08:37We've already established that they've moved a bunch of tee boxes up
08:39to make the golf course shorter.
08:41They've lowered the rough.
08:41They've widened the fairways.
08:43They want this thing to be a shootout because it favors the Americans,
08:46and that's part of that home course advantage, Donnie.
08:50So weather won't be an issue, and I'm glad you mentioned that, Keith,
08:54because I was going to say, what's the advantage for the Americans
08:58using and setting up the course to there?
09:01What do they think their edge is here,
09:03and how did they set the course up to help them?
09:06Joe, there's a couple things, but probably the most obvious one is
09:09about six weeks ago I played the golf course,
09:11and I was comparing it to the 2019 PGA Championship,
09:15which was the last time these guys played in an event here on the black course.
09:18And the scorecard is 107 yards shorter.
09:22That doesn't sound like a lot, but over the course of 18 holes,
09:24it's substantial.
09:25They've shortened some par threes.
09:27They've shortened a couple of the longer par fours.
09:29And the reason being is that the U.S. side is much better hitting wedges.
09:33We are much better at scoring shots.
09:35We're much better at scoring irons and mid-irons.
09:37We do not want to get into a long iron fest like we had over in Rome.
09:40You're going against guys like Rob, Hovland, Rory, Hatton.
09:44You know, those guys are some of the best long iron players in the world.
09:46We have the best wedge players.
09:48Ben Griffin, Russell Henley, Scotty Scheffler, Sam Burns.
09:51Like, that's what we want to do.
09:52So the biggest setup key you're going to see is that all of the tees, where they can,
09:57the PGA of America has moved them up to give us an advantage.
10:01And it's very similar to what they did at Whistling Straits,
10:03which is you lower the rough, you let our guys bob away,
10:06and then you let them just absolutely attack the pin.
10:08It's like a Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson mentality that we've shared for, like, decades.
10:13We're talking to Keith Stewart, our PGA Pro, right here on the Sports Grid Network here.
10:17And if we look at the odds market, Team USA is favored, Keith.
10:20It's minus 145 price, the underdog Europeans, and a plus 165.
10:24So I ask you this.
10:25Do you agree with that price point also?
10:28Who's winning this bad boy?
10:30Well, Donnie, I definitely agree with the price point.
10:32And I'll give you a couple reasons why.
10:34Here's why the USA is favored.
10:36The home team has won by an average of almost seven points over the last five Ryder Cups, right?
10:42Scotty's the number one player in the world.
10:44So we're talking about number one liability.
10:46Everyone that looks at this event domestically is going to say,
10:48Well, geez, we have Tom Brady in the Super Bowl.
10:50We've got the Tiger Woods guy.
10:52We are going to bet them hard.
10:53So you know that number just keeps getting shorter and shorter, right?
10:56Not to mention the fact two weeks ago when he teed it up at the Pro Corps event out where we don't even know.
11:02It doesn't matter.
11:02He's still won.
11:03So he's coming off of a win.
11:05So all of the last time we were in America for a Ryder Cup was 2021.
11:10And Scotty Scheffler has zero wins.
11:12Four years later, he's got 19 guys.
11:14All right.
11:15We have seven players in the top 10 of the official world golf ranking, and we're a better par four team.
11:20And there's 12 of them on this golf course.
11:22They take away two par fives.
11:23I mean, I can give you 100 reasons why.
11:25USA is favored for a ton of reasons.
11:27And the number one reason is home course and the number one player in the world.
11:31Keith, in years past, we have seen, you know, this event.
11:37Team USA, not exactly a great team.
11:41A lot of good individuals.
11:43How is Bradley putting this team together?
11:45What's the camaraderie like?
11:47What's the feel with them?
11:49Well, in the press room, it's been very interesting.
11:51It's obvious that, you know, everyone knows they have Scotty on that team, so it makes them feel comfortable.
11:55And they also know they have Bryson on their team, and he's attracting all of the attention of the fandom that's out there.
12:02So if you're one of those guys that's just like a Cam Young, a quiet guy, just wants to go about your business and play your best golf, or Patrick Cantley, like, that's the two best things in the world that you can know.
12:11So Keegan Bradley has kind of just put these guys in the best position possible to perform.
12:16They've brought in the analytics team.
12:18They have a team from Scouts, which is, you know, a very high-end, data-driven consultant that have taught these guys who needs to play with whom and on what holes.
12:28And you know what?
12:28I think that for the first time in a long time, Captain Keegan is taking seriously the analytics side of all this, which the Europeans have done forever.
12:37And one of the ways that they kill us all the time.
12:39But I tell you what, you know, it's nice, it's refreshing to see Keegan do that.
12:43And I think the guys, as a result, feel pretty loose about things.
12:46Even some of the stars, like Morikawa and JT, seem more comfortable than they should be based upon the way they've been playing lately.
12:53Ryder Cup is always built on pressure.
12:55It's so much fun to watch it play out.
12:57The crowds are certainly tremendous and no better place to be than just outside of New York City.
13:01But understand this, Keith, too.
13:03There are interesting ways to bet this.
13:04Team USA is favorite at a minus 145 price to win this.
13:08But there is an odds market that says after day number one, plus 108 USA, which means we don't usually start all that well in some of these team competitions.
13:18If we see Team USA up after day one, is it a wrap, Keith?
13:23Well, I'll tell you what, there's a couple places you can go with this.
13:28And these are the types of bets that you want to do pre-match and before we know the pairings.
13:32I would definitely take Team USA for day one total.
13:36I mean, it's plus 108 there at FanDuel.
13:38There's another one.
13:39The overall foursomes winner, right, has won the Ryder Cup the last nine times, right?
13:43If you think that the USA is favored and they're going to do well, that's a plus 105 job right there.
13:48I mean, the U.S. has started well, seven of the last eight Ryder Cups.
13:53The USA has led after the first session.
13:55So if you want to take tomorrow morning's foursome session, the winner, USA plus 125.
13:59Donnie, I got to counter you there a little bit.
14:01I'm going to go deep on the USA tomorrow because I feel like they get off to a hot start.
14:06They have the home course advantage.
14:07And, you know, Europe, as I just said, seven of the eight last Ryder Cups, they've started slow.
14:12And you'll hear this if Team USA doesn't perform.
14:15Boom!
14:15That's not for Keith.
14:18We love Keith.
14:19Thanks so much for joining us this week on the Ryder Cup, Keith.
