Transcript
00:00It is the world-famous KROQ 106.7 KROQ, Kevin Ryder in the afternoon with the 420 Catch of the
00:06Day, on the way with these gentlemen, Cigarettes After Sex. Welcome.
00:11Thank you, thanks for having us.
00:12How are you?
00:13Yeah, doing pretty good.
00:14Randall, you?
00:14Doing fantastic.
00:15Doing well? I couldn't love the name of your band more.
00:19That's great. I'm glad.
00:21And I've heard you explain it, but would you mind explaining it for people who don't know?
00:25Yeah, it's always hard to tell the story to get it, like, concise.
00:28It's, like, the one thing I was going to ask about, because it kind of just boils down to, like,
00:32that, you know, I had a girl that was, like, a friends with benefits kind of situation, and she would
00:36always smoke after we were.
00:38Yeah. And you were like, I love that moment.
00:41And I just, yeah, like, we were straight in that moment, and the name just, like, kind of flashed across
00:46my mind for some reason.
00:48That's pretty great.
00:49You guys don't rock much.
00:53No.
00:54You do very moody music, which I love.
00:58What's that?
00:58I said soft rock.
01:00Hard ballads.
01:03You started in, where, in Texas? El Paso?
01:07Yeah, El Paso.
01:07Yeah?
01:08Yeah.
01:08And then you moved to New York.
01:10Yeah, moved to Brooklyn.
01:11How did you meet Randall?
01:14Well, you met Jake first, right?
01:16Because, yeah.
01:17If you can believe it, I was in a funk band with our drummer from Cigarettes, Jacob Tomsky, and I
01:23was playing funk bass in this band with him, and he was playing drums.
01:27And then I met Randall through that friend group, and then I heard them play, Jake and Randy, where I
01:34had, like, this country band.
01:36And I heard them play together, and I was like, these guys sound great. Let me get them for Cigarettes.
01:40So, um, I'm sorry, I thought you said funk.
01:43It was funk, yeah.
01:43Greg is an incredible bass player.
01:45Is that right?
01:46Yeah, he can play anything.
01:47What was your favorite funk song to play?
01:50Yeah, that's it.
01:51Like, the meters, like, Sissy Strut or something.
01:53Yeah.
01:54I love that.
01:55You also played in a cover band when you were younger, and it was, like, metal?
02:00Yeah, I mean, like, no, I played, like, I think me and Randall have done, like, every kind of style,
02:04huh?
02:04Pretty much, yeah.
02:04As you can imagine.
02:05Yeah, so, like, I was a metal kid, like, and I was writing, like, I think the first album I
02:10ever did as a kid when I was 11 was, like, a death metal instrumental record.
02:14So I had, like, that phase.
02:16And you just keep getting into more stuff and more stuff.
02:18And, but I think we all played in cover bands to, like, to just get paid sometimes.
02:23Pay the bills, yeah.
02:23Yeah, just meet other people or whatever.
02:25How did you come up with your sound?
02:27That took a long time because, yeah, like, like I was saying, we just love so much different music, so
02:31it could have been anything.
02:32Right.
02:33And actually, this band sounded way different when it first started.
02:35It was more like, if you can believe it, it was more like kind of like Erasure or Pet Shop
02:39Boys or something.
02:40Really?
02:40Yeah, it was, like, real kind of, like, bright, like, kind of disco, or, like, what do you call it?
02:45Just, like, 80s kind of pop like that.
02:47Who hurt you?
02:47When did you get sad?
02:49That's true, because then it was like, that was happening, then the sound just kept getting mellower and mellower.
02:54But I thought, you know what, let me, like, base the sound off, like, just all of my really, like,
02:58true favorite music.
02:59And a lot of that music ends up being, you know, just the more kind of mellow, romantic music.
03:04So it'd be, like, Chet Baker, Frances Hardy, Mazzy Starr, you know, like, even, like, a Neil Young ballad, like,
03:10Harvest Moon or something.
03:11So I was like, all right, just, like, kind of base the sound on that, and that'll kind of be
03:15the direction to go in.
03:16You did a cover of REO Speedwagon.
03:18That's true.
03:19Keep on Loving You, which, I love your version, but not theirs.
03:23You actually made it listenable.
03:26That's great.
03:26I also heard you were a fan of The Smiths, true?
03:30Yeah, like, The Smiths is my favorite.
03:31My two favorite bands are The Doors and The Smiths.
03:34But The Smiths is, like, really speaks to how, like, the artwork all looks.
03:37Like, it's, like, The Smiths have a very unified, like, you can just, like, identify their albums, like, really quickly,
03:42just like all the photos of Morrissey used.
03:45And with Cigarettes, I'm like, I want that same thing where you just immediately know it's us.
03:48Would you do a cover of a Smiths song?
03:51Yeah, for sure.
03:52It's hard to cover them because they're so perfect.
03:55Yeah.
03:55It's, like, one of those bands, like, covering The Beatles or something because it's so kind of perfect.
03:59But nothing came to mind about, like, actually, I would cover Girlfriend in a Coma, maybe.
04:04That's one I could think of.
04:05That'd be cool.
04:06I would love that.
04:06Maybe I'll see that.
04:07All right, you have a new song that we're going to debut in a second.
04:10And is this a new album coming or just a new standalone song or what?
04:15We have a new record in the works.
04:16It's a new standalone song.
04:18It's kind of from the sessions of our last record, Exes.
04:21So it's kind of in that, more of that vibe.
04:24All right.
04:24We're going to take a break and we will be right back with Cigarettes After Sex and a brand new
04:29song for the 420 Catch of the Day.
04:31We're a tiny bit early for the 420 Catch of the Day, but that's all right.
04:35We have Cigarettes After Sex in the studio with us, Greg and Randall.
04:39I did have a couple of more true or false questions.
04:42One is you recorded your first song in a stairwell at your college.
04:49That's kind of true.
04:50It's like the first EP was done.
04:51The first EP that's out was just called One.
04:55That was done in a stairway.
04:57Just because of the acoustics?
04:58Yeah.
04:59I would just walk through that stairway when I was going to class.
05:01And I was like, yeah.
05:03This is great.
05:03Get inside here and do a record.
05:05You're true.
05:06And true or false, a lot of people are surprised you're a guy, singer.
05:11That's very true.
05:11It's like probably might be the number one thing I get.
05:14Is that right?
05:15Maybe, yeah.
05:16Like people, when we like meet them backstage, they'll like what you were saying earlier.
05:20We're like, wait.
05:22Tell us about this song.
05:24Yeah.
05:24So this song, like I said, was from the X's sessions, like that last record we did.
05:29And it's just kind of a holdover that we couldn't finish until now.
05:31It took a long time to do.
05:33But, you know, it's like many of our songs are kind of true stories about romances.
05:37And this one has details from a romance that I had during that time.
05:41And it's a very L.A. song.
05:43It's just full of, you know, Cinarama Dome is in there and Standard West and stuff like that.
05:48And what's the name of it?
05:49You want to introduce it for the 420 Catch of the Day?
05:52Sure.
05:53This is our new single, Circuit's Out Your Sex.
05:55This is Twizzler.
05:56And it's coming out at midnight tonight.
05:58It's in L.A. time.
06:01That is brand new Cigarettes After Sex, a band that I love.
06:05And that voice is this voice.
06:07That's true.
06:09If you can believe it.
06:11That's singer-songwriter Greg Gonzalez and bass player Randall are in the studio.
06:15That song is fantastic.
06:16I love it.
06:17Brand new stuff from Cigarettes After Sex.
06:20Thank you guys for coming in.
06:21We appreciate it.
06:22Thanks for having me.
06:22Very cool.
06:23Amazing.
