00:00Hello YouTube and welcome to my channel. Today we'll be ranking David Austin's
00:09roses and I have a lot of roses being ranked here. It's probably like 70% of
00:17his entire collection so it's going to take a while but we'll get through it.
00:23If you don't know me, I myself grow about 400 different scented roses here in my
00:33garden and I have worked five years as a Sumerier. So both my nose and everything
00:42else is very sharp when it comes to scent and stuff like that. My family have
00:50had a garden center before for many years and my mom is a gardener, florist and
00:56everything to do with flowers. So I would be lying if I said I don't know a
01:02thing or two about flowers. And roses is my favorite flower. I have over 400 of them
01:11and the 400 I have I have selected for a strongest fragrance. But let's get started
01:19here. And let's see what the first one is over here on our tier list. The first one
01:27is Olivia Rose Austin. Now Olivia Rose Austin is an amazing rose. It's incredibly
01:36healthy. It's really floriferous. Sometimes it is so healthy that it doesn't even
01:45defoliate when it's winter and like minus 10. So it is an extremely healthy rose and
01:52extremely flowering. It's probably the most flowering rose he has ever made. The
01:59only one that comes close is a Princess Anne. But yeah, I'll probably have to place
02:06this in A-plus tier I think. I wanted to go S but to be honest it doesn't have scent.
02:16It's an amazing
02:17rose in every way but it doesn't have scent. So if you're curious to see how the rose
02:25looks I'll find it for you here. It's quite a pink rose but it's an amazing rose really.
02:39As you can see here it's full of flowers. It's so floriferous. It's an amazing rose. An A-plus for
02:48me at least.
02:49I wanted to go S but I can't quite get myself to do it. So blame me on that.
02:57Yeah, let's see what the next one is on our tier list here. The next one is Roald Dahl. Roald
03:06Dahl is
03:07a good rose but not as good as Olivia Rose Austin. It's a wonderful rose if you can get it
03:14in a pot
03:14because it's quite small and quite floriferous also. Not quite as healthy as a Olivia Rose Austin.
03:23But it's a cute little rose to have in a pot if you have the opportunity for it. I'm going
03:30to place it
03:31in B tier. It's an Irish good rose. And if you're interested in seeing how it looks we'll also show
03:42that.
03:50Yeah, as I said, it's this wonderful looking rose. I really like the look of it. But it doesn't have
03:57scent, nearly no scent. And it's not as healthy as some of the others. But if you get it in
04:03a pot,
04:04it's a wonderful pot rose like you can see here. Wonderful pot rose.
04:10So yeah, let's go have a look at the next one on our list. And the next one is, let's
04:20just see,
04:21it's Emily Bronte. Oh, Emily Bronte is a really, really good rose. It just has one problem. It has
04:28fragrance, it has health, it has nearly everything. But it also has a tendency to break when it's windy.
04:35The stems tend to break a lot and can't carry its own weight. If it wasn't for that, it would
04:41be an A
04:42plus. But because it has that tendency, I'm going to place it in an A tier.
04:49So, the next one will be Vanessa Bell. Oh, do I love Vanessa Bell. Vanessa Bell is such an amazing
05:00rose.
05:02It's healthy, it's proliferous. You get these wetting-like, translucent kind of like a whale.
05:10It has such a wetting quality to it, you can't quite describe.
05:17It's not quite scented. It has a little bit of scent, not much, maybe five out of ten.
05:24But the look of it, the look is so beautiful. And it is one of my all-time favorites, and
05:29I admire it,
05:30because of this creamy white against this lime-colored leaves. I simply love it. I have to place this
05:39one in the nest here. It's one of my all-time favorites. And I'll go look it up for you.
05:45Now I say it's one of my favorites I want to show it to you. And let's see here.
05:56Yeah, you can probably see why it's one of my favorites.
05:59It's these really gorgeous wedding-like blooms. They're so wonderful. Yeah.
06:06And with violet and stuff like that. Wonderful rose.
06:10Go get it, in my opinion. And also good for pots.
06:15Now let's go see here on a tier list what the next one is. The next one is Dame Judi
06:22Dench.
06:24I don't really like Dame Judi Dench. Nothing to do with the actor. The actor is amazing.
06:30But I find the rose to get really large, like a large bush with long stems.
06:36It flowers quite decently and is also quite healthy, but I don't like
06:41the look of the stems. It gets kind of long and kind of laggy and want to run
06:46close to the soil. So I'll have to place this one in beach here.
06:52The next one we have here is Gabriel Oak. Gabriel Oak is quite a decent rose. It's not as good
07:02as many
07:04on here, say, in my opinion, because it's not always as healthy. It's a long rose to...
07:11It takes a long time to get going, in my opinion.
07:14And it's not as strong scented as maybe a 7 out of 10 or something like that, a bit of
07:20raspberry scent.
07:23But what's really interesting about it is the color variation. It kind of shifts in the
07:29reddish and magenta tones. So if you plant a huge group of them together, you get this very interesting
07:37play on color. But I think for me, it will have to go into...
07:44It's a toss up between A plus and A. Like the coloration makes me want to give it A plus,
07:51but it's simply not
07:52on Olivia Rose Austin level. So I will have to give it A, I think, because it's not as healthy.
08:00And it has its own problems. Also a lot of spikes on this one.
08:06But yeah, we should probably show you, because it is a good rose.
08:11And I should show you the pictures of it, because it's one of his best roses, really. But
08:19in my opinion, it's not the one you should begin with.
08:25And yeah, you can see here how it changes and color variations are really beautiful when it changes
08:31like that. So yeah, good rose, but not the best. Let's go on to the next part of the tier
08:41collection
08:42here. And that is Eustacia Y. Eustacia Y is quite a good rose. A lot of scent. I think it's
08:508 out of
08:5010 on my list. And quite healthy. And yeah, it's a good rose. It's a really good rose. I'll have
08:59to
08:59give it an A+. A good solid rose. It has everything. It does nothing spectacular. It just does everything
09:08really well. The next one is Seeless Marner. And Seeless Marner is exactly like Eustacia Y in a good
09:20way. It's a rose that does everything to about an 8 out of 10, both in fragrance and health and
09:26everything. It does everything well rounded and exceptionally good. And it's not a bad rose in
09:32any way. So it'll go right next to Eustacia Y, a really solid rose. And then we have the Country
09:41Parson.
09:42The Country Parson is probably one you should avoid if you don't like spikes, because this one is really,
09:50really, really, really. It has a lot of fonts, let me say it that way. It's completely covered in it.
09:56But it's also
09:58decently scented. It's one of the few yellow roses that actually have a pleasant scent. And it's in the
10:07same rose family as the Scottish rose, or Scotch roses. It's very healthy, very good. I think I'll have to
10:18place this one in A-plus also. Then you have Bring Me Sunshine. A lot of people like Bring Me
10:26Sunshine.
10:27I'm not really one of them. I like it flowers a lot and it's healthy and all that. But I
10:35don't find the
10:36smell or the scent, to be precise, as good as many of the others. It has a more of a
10:43tobacco tea scent.
10:44And so, because of that, I'll probably place it in A-plus. If it has a more decent scent,
10:53it will go out in A-plus instead of A. Then you have Tottering By Gently. Tottering By Gently is
11:01a really
11:01good flowering rose for insects. And it's a really good single flower rose with a unique look. And I think
11:10because of that unique look, and it flowers, and it's very healthy, I'll place it in an A here.
11:20It doesn't have the scent, but it's a unique looking rose. And I actually think I'm going to show it
11:25to
11:25you here. Because, yeah, it's quite a good rose. And the single flowering,
11:37or not single flowering, but the simple flower it creates like this, really beautiful. And if you
11:44have a space for it, it's a good way to get a better variety in your flower blooms. Because often
11:53people
11:53plant these double or these tea hybrids, and everything just looks alike. So getting something
11:59like this, or something like a musk rose, is a really good way to offset that. So yeah, let's continue
12:07with
12:07our tier list. And let's see what's next. The next one is Lichville Angel. Now, Lichville Angel is a
12:15decent rose. It's a good rose. It looks beautiful. The main problem I have with it is its normal health,
12:22and the flowers have a tendency to nod over, and not much scent on it. So I'm sorry to say,
12:32Lichville Angel,
12:33you're going in the B tier for me. Then we have James L. Austin. James L. Austin is quite a
12:42good rose.
12:44It has this really special magenta color you don't see a lot of roses have, except for Princess Anne.
12:52But James L. Austin is much taller than Princess Anne. But it is a really solid rose, and I'm actually
13:06tempted to give it a... I want to go A+, but the fact that it's kind of tall and
13:13kind of leggy sometimes
13:15makes me want to place it into H again. So I think it'll go into A. Then we have Summer
13:23Song. I don't
13:25like Summer Song at all. It's not the looks. I like the special color of it, this kind of very
13:32orange-red.
13:34But the problem I find with it in my climate is it's simply not that healthy. It's kind of like
13:42Pat Austin. Pat Austin is not that healthy for me either. And I'm probably going to play Summer Song
13:50in C tier and Pat Austin if I have her in D tier, because I don't like those two at
13:57all, because they're
13:58not that healthy. Then we have Royal Jubilee. Royal Jubilee is quite a decent rose also.
14:07But it kind of suffers from the same as Emily Bronte, that it sometimes breaks and sometimes
14:17because the flowers are so copped, they want to ball up and it doesn't look nice anymore. But it has
14:25a
14:25really good ability to flower. It's quite proliferous. It's also decently healthy, but the stems breaking and the
14:34flowers tending to ball up and the scent not really being... it's an okay scent, but it's not the strongest.
14:42So it's a toss-up between A and B tier. I think I'm going to place it into B tier
14:49on this one.
14:51Then we have Strawberry Hill. Strawberry Hill is actually a quite difficult plant for me to place,
15:00because in many ways I love it, because on the good days it has a really good scent. On other
15:07days
15:07you can barely scent it. But it has a special look, these little flowers, these cute little
15:14strawberry flowers nearly. I think it'll be an A also. If the scent was more consistent, I'll have gone on
15:26an A+. But the scent is there when it is there, and then it's gone. But it's quite healthy, and
15:34it's nice
15:35looking, and it's just a really good climber. So it's going into A tier. Then we have Clare Austin. Now,
15:45Clare Austin is a plant I know many of you like, and I want to like it. It looks amazing.
15:54But sadly,
15:55my Clare Austin is not blooming a lot. I don't know what is wrong with it. I know it's an
16:01amazing rose
16:02for many of you. So if I personally had to decide, it would have gone all the way into C
16:08tier. But I know
16:10many of you have good success with it, and also like the scent of it. So I will error on
16:20the side of mine being a bad example, and place it into A tier. One thing I will warn about
16:28though,
16:28is I don't think this rose should be placed anywhere near the shadows. I think it should be placed more
16:36sunny, because I placed mine a bit too cloudy, I think. Now the next one is one of my absolute
16:45favorites. This will be an instant S tier, like Lady Emma Hamilton. Lady Emma Hamilton is a wonderful
16:53rose. It has the scent, and it has these most wonderful cupped flowers that varies between
17:02orange and apricot, and these really beautiful, it has this kind of flamey quality to it in the blooms,
17:09where they just get different colors. That covers quite good health, and yeah, I have nothing bad to say
17:17about this rose. It's an instant S tier for me. I'm just going to show it to you over here
17:24in just a second.
17:35Yeah, you can see these flamey blooms. It has really nice blooms, and it's a wonderful bloom when you
17:42see it. The only negative thing I can say about this plant is it's quite hard to get a hold
17:48of.
17:49It's quite rare these days to find it, because it has been out of commercial production for quite a
17:55some time now. So it's starting to become more a collector's item, but if you stick to it, you can
18:02probably find it. And it's totally worth gathering if you find it. So let's continue with the tier list here.
18:12Next one is Young Lysitis. I actually quite like Young Lysitis. For me, it has a stronger fragrance than
18:21Gabriel Oak, and it has also proven itself quite useful. It's especially wonderful if you plant it
18:34next to Gabriel Oak, and you get this wonderful color play. I really like Young Lysitis just for
18:41fragrance. In my opinion, it's 8 out of 10 on fragrance. The rest of the plant is kind of decent,
18:52but I'm in doubt. I don't really want to place it over James L. Austin or Strawberry Hill. Well,
19:01I think I'm going to anyway, because of the stronger fragrance. Next one is Lady of Jalotte.
19:10Lady of Jalotte is a wonderful rose. She has the same qualities as Lady Emma Hamilton,
19:18same color blooms, and you can grow her both as a climber and as a big shrub, and she's quite
19:28healthy and quite decent plant. The reason for me she'll have to rank lower than Lady Emma Hamilton is
19:35simply she does not have a lot of scent. I think she's like a 4 out of 10 on scent
19:41for me. Maybe a 5 if
19:44I'm being generous. But she's a wonderful plant, and you should definitely have her in your collection.
19:51If you can't get Lady Emma Hamilton, then there's no doubt you should have Lady of Jalotte in your
19:57collection. I'm going to place her into a plus tier. A wonderful rose.
20:06Yeah, and the next one is Princess Anne. Now Princess Anne is one of my all-time favorites. It's
20:16one of my top five favorite Austin roses. It's not because it's amazingly fragrant. It's not. It's like a
20:23four or five out of ten. But it has this wonderful magenta color that changes as it ages. It fades
20:34quite
20:35beautifully, like from this totally more hot magenta, and then it kind of dulls out and graze out into the
20:43more violet colors. It's quite beautiful. It's extremely healthy and extremely floriferous.
20:50The only thing I can think of that is as healthy and as floriferous as Princess Anne in the lineup
20:59of
21:00David Austin is like Olivia Rose Austin. I think those two are like very similar in many ways, but
21:09Princess Anne just has such a special color, and she's one of my favorites just from the way she ages.
21:15Because there's nothing that looks quite like her, and you can use her to offset so many pink plants and
21:24a lot of all things. I find her a wonderful rose. I'm sorry to say, but I'll have to give
21:30this one a
21:31nest here, because I don't really think there's many roses like her. I also wanted to give Lady
21:37Charlotte a higher placement, but because of Lady Emma Hamilton, she gets beaten out. And the reason I'm not
21:44really placing Olivia Rose Austin in the nest here is because the color is kind of ordinary. It's not
21:51special like Princess Anne. It's kind of more ordinary. But I'll just go ahead and show Princess Anne,
21:59because it's a rose you should see. It's a really good Austin rose.
22:07Yeah, as you can see here, the color is so amazing. You can see here, as it ages, it creates
22:14these
22:14wonderful different colors. Really amazing rose. You should get it. I can only speak very highly of it.
22:24Yeah, let's continue. The next one, oh, that's a good one too.
22:31It is probably one of my top three favorite Austin roses. It is Bosco Bell. And I am going to
22:38place
22:38this one straight into Est here. I know a lot of people won't agree, but the scent on this one
22:44is
22:44very special. It's kind of fruity, kind of exotic. It has this kind of like sweet honey and roasted
22:53almond to it. It's a wonderful, exotic fragrance. And the color on it and the cup shape is so special
23:03to it. It just screams exotic to you. And the scent sometimes reminds me of a Tantau rose.
23:13What is it called again? Tropicana, I think. But yeah, it's an amazing rose. And I'm
23:23also like the shape of it. It makes it quite a huge bush, quite rounded bush, quite a lot of
23:28leaves.
23:29And it also blooms quite a lot too. So I like it. Let's just go ahead and see it here.
23:36And we'll just go over to it. In my opinion, this is definitely one of the David Austin roses you
23:45should
23:45get. It makes such a nice little bush and the peachy tones and also the scent is so special on
23:54this one. I really like the scent on this because it's not really a scent you meet a lot. Like
24:00I said,
24:00only the Tantau Tropicana, I think, has something similar. There's also a few others, but they're
24:07much rarer to find. So let's go over to our tier list again and see what the next one is.
24:17The next one is Kew Gardens. This one is really very close to tottering, but generally it's just a
24:25white version. Really good for bees, very healthy, constantly blooming, has this simple flower,
24:32just like tottering by gently. You can use it for hedges. And yeah, it's a wonderful, resilient rose.
24:39And you should really use roses like these because it's not what people normally think of when they
24:48think of roses. So it's good to have something like this to kind of break the perception. And also,
24:53sometimes if you have some hairy cup roses, this can kind of like lighten the mood as a bush in
25:00between. So yeah, this one is going into A tier. It's again the lack of scent that prevents me from
25:07placing it higher. It's a wonderful rose, a simple, wonderful, hardworking rose.
25:15The next one is Crown Princess Magritte and Margaret. I'm actually in a bit of a doubt with this rose,
25:25because it didn't do a lot for me the first two to three years. But then it started growing wonderfully
25:32and became quite healthy. And it also has a wonderful fragrance. So the first few years for me, it was
25:40like a B, sometimes a C actually, because it was not really doing a lot. But then it kind of
25:49crept up to
25:50like a B a year after. And now I think it's in, yeah, if it starts growing a lot, it's
25:58moving up to an A
25:59plus tier because the fragrance is really good. But I think for now, it will have to stay in an
26:04A tier.
26:06But it's a really wonderful rose. Next up, you have Desdemona. Desdemona was one of those roses I
26:15really wanted to like. I really wanted to like it. It's these beautiful cup flowers,
26:23really romantic, nostalgic, old, historic rose look. And it also has a bit of scent, not much,
26:33probably like five or six out of 10. But the problem I have with it is the health. It's not
26:41that healthy
26:41for me. And that means it's probably, if I'm being generous, it's A tier, but I don't really feel it's
26:50an A tier. I feel like it's more of an B tier. But it has a very special look. And
26:55I'll just go show
26:56you now how it looks. Yeah, let's just see here. Desdemona.
27:09Yeah, you can see here, it is quite romantic, double flowers, really, really wonderful. I wanted to like
27:17it. But because of the health, I sadly couldn't. And I know this is a rose that does wonderfully for
27:26some people and not so wonderfully for others. But also the fact that the scent wasn't as strong as I
27:33previously believed. And I know there's white roses that has a much stronger scent. It's kind of like,
27:41let me down a bit. So yeah, let's go back to our tier list again. And let's see what the
27:49next one is.
27:51The next one is Grace. Oh, Grace is quite a wonderful rose. She reminds me of Royal Doll. It's a
28:00wonderful
28:00rose you can place in a pot, blooms a lot, is quite amazingly healthy, and it'll look like a fortune
28:08in
28:08a pot. Really one of those really good pot roses. And decent rose all around really good. The only
28:18problem I have with it is like a fragrance. And it also kind of being like Roald Dahl and a
28:26lot of
28:26other ones. But if you have a pot you need something in, it's a really good solid rose that will
28:34serve you
28:34well. So nothing wrong with it. Like all these roses are good in some way. You just have to find
28:43the purpose
28:43for them. Now the next one is a very special rose. One of my top five probably also. I have
28:53to be careful
28:53now because some of them are probably top 10 if you really force me. But Queen of Sweden is one
29:01of these
29:01wonderful roses. And I'll be hard pressed if an A-plus on S. I'll have to look.
29:11The reason I want to place it into S-plus is because it's kind of pretty when viewed from the
29:19side.
29:19here from the side. It makes these little, how to say, these, how do I say it, it makes these
29:29really
29:29cut flowers that kind of look like a lotus flower or something like that when seen from the side.
29:36It has a very special look, very healthy. You should grow it a bit taller, like 20 centimeters
29:42taller probably, than you cut the other ones. Because it's a really pretty rose when looked at from the
29:48side. It has this, as the French would say, a certain je ne sais quoi, a certain something.
29:57It has a look like no other rose and I'm willing to forgive the lack of scent, I think, simply
30:05because
30:05it looks so special. So we'll put it into S-tier. And I'll just go show you here what I'm
30:11talking about
30:12when I say it has a really special look.
30:25Yeah, as you can see here, it forms these kind of like lotus, or call it what you will, water
30:31lilies,
30:31from the side. And that's what makes it really special is the, it's really good to have at the
30:37back of a border where you're weaving it kind of from the side. So you shouldn't place it at the
30:43front of the border, but it's a really good rose when you view it from the side. Really special look
30:49also. So yeah, that was an S-plus. Sorry, S. I don't, I'm getting a bit sleepy here. I don't
30:58have S-plus in
30:59this. I only have S. Let's see here what's next on the tier list. Next on the tier list is
31:07Harlow Car.
31:09And Harlow Car is an amazing rose. It's kind of like the brother of the country parson, except one is
31:19yellow and the other is pink. But I kind of think like Harlow Car has has a better scent and
31:26it has a
31:27bit of more healthy growth in my opinion. Like both of my Harlow Cars have outgrown my country parson.
31:34And I also think that the scent is a bit more reliable on the Harlow Car. Sometimes the country
31:41parson just for some reason doesn't want to give me much scent. But the Harlow Car rarely disappoints. So
31:48I actually think I'll have to place Harlow Car over a country parson for that reason. Normally,
31:55I'll place them side by side. But after a couple of years of noticing the Harlow Car doing a bit
32:01better,
32:03I think that's how it'll be. Harlow Car, again, also have a lot of fawns like the country parson,
32:10but it's really beautiful if you're going for this cottage look where you want a little rose bush or
32:16something close to the house or you want a, yeah, in general, a little hedge or something is good for
32:22that. Really solid rose. And I'll also show that to you here. So yeah, let's see here.
32:37Yeah, as you can see, it's quite an amazing rose. And also quite scented too. It's in my opinion,
32:45it's around seven and a half to an eight. Well, I believe like the country parson is closer to a
32:52seven.
32:52And sometimes it just stops being scented in my opinion, but they're both really beautiful and
32:59really healthy roses. Only thing you have to be a bit careful with with Harlow Car and some of
33:05the country parson is they they want a bit of air circulation. They can suffer from mildew if you
33:11place them too close to a place where it's very wet and they go don't get a lot of air.
33:18So yeah,
33:19let's go back here to the tier list and we'll see. Oh, the next one is
33:27I have to be really careful here because when you look at roses, every rose is your favorite. But
33:34the next one is absolutely. And I'm absolutely positive about that. It's my favorite climbing
33:42rose from David Austin. It's one of his oldest and it should be no surprise. It's the wonderful
33:48Gertrude Jekyll. Gertrude Jekyll is one of the most scented climbers on the face of planet earth.
33:57Probably it's it's a solid eight to eight and a half out of ten for me on scent. It's actually
34:04crossbred with some of the French roses. If people know the historic rose competition board,
34:11Gertrude Jekyll is scented quite like competition board because competition board is in the parentage.
34:20So but it's a wonderful rose. The only negative thing I'll say about Gertrude Jekyll is
34:27she can suffer a bit from black spot. She's one of the older roses in the lineup from David Austin
34:34and
34:35sometimes she gets black spot not usually in the first bloom
34:41period but often in the second bloom period and she can also get a bit of naked canes because of
34:48that.
34:48You really have to grow her horizontally and she responds well to that if you bend the canes a bit
34:54horizontally.
34:56The next one is Abraham Darby.
34:59Yeah, that's a tough one for me because
35:05it has a quite a good scent. It's a beautiful rose.
35:10It just has a problem with black spot and defoliating and
35:18health in general.
35:20So it's a B or C for me but it's a really pretty rose but because of the black spot
35:27problem
35:27I think I'll have to place it in to be
35:34but decently centered. I actually think I want to show you Gertrude Jekyll rose because it's a really
35:39good rose. Let's see here.
35:50Gertrude Jekyll is of course named after the English gardener that cultivated her garden at
35:59Mondstadt Wood. So it's quite interesting to read garden books if you're into the old cottage garden.
36:06But yeah, it's a wonderful climber, wonderful climber. If you had to get only one climber from
36:13David Austin, I think this would be the one. So yeah, Gertrude Jekyll.
36:21Let's get back to our TLS again and see what we have here.
36:27Yeah, we have Winchester Cathedral. Now Winchester Cathedral is a decently
36:35white bushy rose. There's nothing special about it. There's nothing wrong with it. It's healthy and
36:41it's quite decent. Sometimes it mutates back to pink because it's a variant of I believe the Mary rose
36:50but it's a solid rose and yeah, I'm going to put it into B tier.
36:56It doesn't really have scent and it has a few weaknesses, but it's quite good.
37:02Golden Celebration. Oh, I want to love this rose and I want to hate it.
37:07It's not a pretty thing to say about a rose, but it's a black spot magnet for me.
37:14Um, it's kind of like Abraham Darby.
37:17Yeah, but while Abraham Darby has a scent I really like.
37:22Golden Celebration is more like a tea fragrance.
37:27Tea and sandalwood fragrance.
37:30Some would probably also say patchouli, but yeah.
37:35This is a tough one for me, but it's not really been healthy for me.
37:39It does well for some people, but at least it has survived while Summersong has had a lot of
37:45problems doing that and Pat Austin also, so I think I'll still place it up into B.
37:52But it's one you have to be really careful about because kind of like Abraham Darby,
37:57they look wonderful in the first bloom period and then they get a lot of black spot.
38:03So, but I'll show it to you here because it has a really special look, so you deserve to see
38:10it.
38:12It's one of the first roses people often buy from Austin, but it's not the easiest one to
38:20to keep happy in my opinion because of the black spot.
38:24But it's a really good rose if you're interested to get a rose that really is scented like tea fragrance.
38:32So yeah, that was Golden Celebration.
38:35And now we'll go back to the tier list.
38:39Next one is Wolton Old Hall. I really like Wolton Old Hall.
38:44It has a wonderful look. You don't see these cup flowers that has kind of like a creamy white quality
38:51to them.
38:51But the scent, the scent is among the strongest scents in the world.
38:57I think actually it might very well be the strongest scent in the David Austin lineup.
39:04Like it is probably a competition between Gertrude Jekyll and Wolton Old Hall.
39:14So wonderful rose and I can't recommend it enough. It's an instant S tier for me.
39:20And I'll just go show you here what I mean about these special cup flowers.
39:27Let's see here.
39:33Yeah, you can see them here. These really special cup flowers.
39:38You can grow it as a climber. You can also keep it short as a bush if you want to.
39:43But the fragrance on this one, the myrrh and yeah, it is a delicious fragrance, really strong fragrance.
39:50I like it. The only negative thing I'll say about it is until it gets going, it can be a
39:56bit more particular when it wants to bloom.
40:00It's a bit sparse blooming in the beginning. So yeah. And we'll go back here again.
40:08The next one is the Pilgrim. The Pilgrim is a really good rose.
40:12It's beautiful and it's good for obelisks. It's a bit slow to get going, has a decent enough fragrance.
40:22Honestly, it kind of reminds me of Bring Me Sunshine, so I'm probably going to place it into the A
40:31tier.
40:32But it has a really wonderful look and it's used a lot by David Austin. I'll show it to you
40:39here.
40:43Yeah, you can see why it's so light. Wonderful looking rose.
40:47Like, it's one of the prettiest climbers in David Austin's collection, in my opinion.
40:52Sadly, not as good scented as Walton Oldhall or Gertrude Jekyll, but really a solid rose.
41:00So yeah. And we'll go back here to our tier list and see what else we can figure out.
41:10Yeah, and we have Duty Obscure now. Duty Obscure is a wonderful rose.
41:18It has a very unique look, kind of like Walton Oldhall, just a bit more brownish or ambery in the
41:27color.
41:27It has a wonderful fragrance too, not as strong, but I like it.
41:35I think I'll have to place it into A-plus tier, because it has a really special look.
41:43I think I'll place Danahue right next to it. Danahue has sometimes a good enough scent like Duty Obscure, but
41:56it has the advantage it blooms a lot more than Duty Obscure.
42:01So, one has more scent, in my opinion, and the other one blooms more, but good roses nonetheless.
42:08I'll just go ahead and show you Danahue here.
42:11It's one of the new Austin roses, but it has such a special look with these copped ones.
42:19And this is also sort of the color you'll find in Duty Obscure, just Danahue blooms a lot more.
42:27So, yeah.
42:28And let's go back to the list.
42:33And here we have Heritage.
42:36Heritage is a really good scented rose.
42:38I'm a bit in doubt if I want to place it into an A-plus, I think it'll have to
42:45be an A-plus for me.
42:47It has these copped pink flowers, and it's a really wonderful rose.
42:53Quite strong scented too, and when it gets going, it's a really healthy plant, but it can be a bit
42:59fragile in the beginning.
43:01So, yeah.
43:03And Mary Rose.
43:04Mary Rose is exactly the same as the Winchester Cathedral, so it's just a pink variant of it.
43:13It's really good for making a bushy rose, kind of like Buscobel is, and it blooms a lot and very
43:18healthy.
43:19But it kind of also wants to, can't decide like Winchester, if it wants to turn pink or if it
43:26wants to turn white.
43:27And so sometimes you get a bit of variegation in the flowers.
43:33Next up is one of my all-time favorites, and it is actually the Poet's Wife.
43:40The Poet's Wife is currently the most scented yellow for me.
43:45I don't know many yellows that are as scented and as fruity as the Poet's Wife.
43:51It's a wonderful scented rose.
43:53The only thing negative I'll say about the Poet's Wife is it kind of has this twirling motion,
44:00where it twirls around itself.
44:02And you'll also see that Austen actually called it a swirl, because it kind of makes this whirling motion.
44:10So I haven't found the ideal spot for it if it's in front of the bed or if it's in
44:15a pot,
44:16because it has this whirling motion.
44:18But the simple fact that it is a yellow rose, and it's a yellow rose in my opinion,
44:23that's like 9 out of 10 scented.
44:26One of the strongest scented roses I know.
44:29And also because it's yellow, not a lot of strong scented yellow roses.
44:33It's simply one of those roses I'll have to give an S, simply because of the strong fragrance and the
44:42color.
44:43So it's the strongest scented yellow in Austen's sortiment, in my opinion, and probably in Roses World Wild.
44:53It's well worth growing.
44:55I'll just show it to you here.
45:04And I can understand why he named it Poet's Wife, because the scent is just amazing on this one.
45:10Wonderful scented yellow rose, and one of the really good ones.
45:17The only problem, as I said, is the twirling motion.
45:20I don't know even if you can see maybe a bit here, but it twirls a bit.
45:25Yeah, we'll see here.
45:27Next up is one of my all-time favorites.
45:31It's Munstead Wood.
45:33If you like these deep red flowers.
45:37Like, when you go to Austen's sortiment, there's one thing I really want to critique him for,
45:43and that is he doesn't make a lot of red flowers.
45:47Like, there's so few true red flowers in his sortiment, but so many pink flowers.
45:53So, please, Austen, make some more red flowers.
45:57It's, we could use some more scented red flowers from you.
46:01But Munstead Wood is one of the exception.
46:04It's a wonderful scented red flower.
46:09And, yeah, it has this maroon quality to it.
46:13It's an instant S-plus for me.
46:15Sorry, I want to say S-plus.
46:18That's how much I love it.
46:19And, yeah, I just want to show it to you.
46:37Yeah, you can see these really deep red flowers.
46:40It's just wonderful.
46:43Wonderful, wonderful.
46:45The only problem with this one is it can be hard to find because it's out of production now,
46:53and it's kind of become a collector's item.
46:56So, if you're lucky to find it, and that kind of goes for all the red Austen roses,
47:03they're kind of hard to get a hold of because they become quite rare,
47:07and he doesn't make a lot of red roses anymore.
47:11But if you find Munstead Wood, definitely get it.
47:15Just be a bit careful with it the first year when it's getting established.
47:20It's healthy when it gets going, but the first year you need to look out for it a bit more.
47:26But the fragrance is really amazing, in my opinion, often between 8 and 9 out of 10.
47:32So, yeah.
47:33Now we have the last rose on our list.
47:39And the lucky one is Tranquility.
47:43Tranquility is a really difficult one for me.
47:46It's healthy, it makes a lush bush, it blooms quite a lot, there's nothing wrong with it, beautiful blooms.
47:53You can't really criticize it, or I kind of can, because in my opinion, there's not much scent,
48:02and it's kind of like a lot of the other ones from Austen, just it's a bit more healthy.
48:08And, yeah, it's like an improved Winchester Cathedral, nearly.
48:14And so I'm just going to place it in a good rose.
48:18But to move higher up in the Hero Key, it needed something more special and a bit more scent.
48:26So, there's some here I haven't been able to place, or I haven't coded in here, because to be honest,
48:36I was running out of space.
48:38You have something like Pat Austin, I'll probably place that in D tier.
48:41And, yeah, there's a lot of his new roses, I think Penelope Lively, and a lot of that I'll place
48:53into
48:54between A and A+, and, yeah.
48:59So, I think this is the list for now.
49:04I'll just scale it up for you here, so you can see it.
49:13And we'll just move it to the front here, and scale it up a bit more.
49:21And that's the list.
49:24Vanessa Bell, the wedding-like rose, that's really beautiful.
49:28Lady Emma Hamilton, quite scented and blushing, and Princess Anne, the unique color.
49:34And Bosco Bell, the very exotic, fruity, almondy, really wonderful rose.
49:41And Queen of Sweden, a little water lily, and the, yeah, lotus flower, looked at from the side.
49:50And then you have Haluka, a wonderful scented, stellar rose.
49:54And Gertrude Jekyll, probably his best climbing rose, still wonderfully scented.
50:00Wolves and Old Howell, wonderful look, wonderful scent, get it.
50:05The Poet's Wife, one of the strongest scented yellows in the world, definitely worth getting.
50:11And also Munster Wood, one of the strongest scented reds in the world.
50:16And, yeah, I think that was the list.
50:20In the A-plus-T, I'll say definitely get Olivia Rose Austin.
50:27It's a wonderful rose.
50:29Eustacia Wise, Silas Marner, also good if you just want some solid pink roses.
50:37So, yeah, Lady of Charlotte, if you can't get Lady Emma Hamilton.
50:41The advantage for Lady Emma Hamilton is she is a bit lower, where Lady of Charlotte grows larger, because you
50:48can also grow her as a climber.
50:50But she grows into a much larger bush, where Lady Emma Hamilton you can place in a pot or at
50:56the front.
50:57And so, yeah.
50:59And what about the A-tier?
51:01I think in the A-tier, you have Gabriel Oak and you have James L. Austin.
51:09And, yeah, there's wonderful options in there.
51:13And in the B-tier, it's probably like Roald Dahl for me and Mary Rose.
51:20So, and yeah, C-tier, Summer Song.
51:25And a lot of unhealthy Austin Roses that wouldn't make a season here.
51:30Probably if I haven't included them in the list, it's probably because it's somewhere around here.
51:37There's nothing like between the A and D-tier.
51:39It's not much special.
51:42That or it's been out of production for 50 years.
51:45These are the most likely Austin Roses you will meet on the market today.
51:49And I wish I could make a longer list, but, yeah, I think this is enough time-wise.
51:58So, I hope you liked the video.
52:02And, yeah, I'll sign off for now.
52:06But I'm really interested in if people like these kind of videos.
52:11Because, as I said, I have over 400 fragrant roses, so I can easily sort these roses for you.
52:18And if people are interested in me doing, like, Cordes roses like this, or Tanta roses, or Milan, or really
52:29any of the French roses, like Del Bard, I'll happily do it.
52:34And I'll also happily do other sort of rose rankings.
52:38But, yeah, this was David Austin rose rankings, and I'm signing off for now.
52:45Hope you had fun listening to me ramble.
52:48And if there are any roses here you believe I've ranked on fairly, it can sometimes be due to climate.
52:54I am closer to Scandinavian weather because I live in Denmark.
53:01So, we get a bit of rain and we get conditions similar to Germany and to England, really.
53:11One thing I have noticed about David Austin roses, if I can say something general about them, is they do
53:17suffer a bit more from black spot than the other cultivators.
53:22And I will also say that sometimes you have to be more careful with them, because often they're multipurpose.
53:32Like, you can take the lady of shallot, that can be grown both as a shrub and as a climber.
53:37And the same with Gertrude Jekyll. Gertrude Jekyll can also be grown as a shrub and a climber.
53:43But that requires you know what you're doing and you cut the right canes.
53:47And that's why Austin roses can be a bit tricky sometimes.
53:53But what are the advantages of Austin roses?
53:57They look really romantic. They're kind of like the historic roses in the double-copped shape.
54:06And if I had to mention one perfect use on Austin rose, it's really in pots.
54:11Because the roses from Austin get so bushy and so round and has many leaves,
54:19they're really good for filling out a pot and giving this bushy look.
54:24So they look quite pretty in pots, many of them, and that's really where I think Austin roses have
54:31a lot of strength is as pot roses and as these really bushy plants.
54:38A few of them are extremely scented as well, not all of them.
54:45And another disadvantage, sadly for Austin roses, is I think his roses are a bit more expensive
54:54than the market in general. So some of them are totally worth it and you should get them,
55:02but it's not everything in his collection that is worth getting.
55:08So for example, a summer song and a lot of the more weak ones like Pat Austin.
55:17So yeah, that was my review of Austin roses. I really like the English roses. It's wonderful,
55:26wonderful roses. And I greatly admire how they have bred in a lot of the old historic roses into them.
55:35And a lot of my garden, I think I have over 50 English roses now. And some of them I
55:43have even three of,
55:45something like The Poet's Wife and Bosco Bell and Princess Anne and Vanessa Bell,
55:51some of them I have bought three of. So I really love Austin roses.
55:58That's it for today. Hope you liked the video and I'm signing off now.
